Named in honor of Major General and Texas A&M President James Earl Rudder ’32, Rudder's Rangers is an elite organization within the Army ROTC program. Since the 1970s, the organization has prepared participating cadets for US Army Ranger School and other training opportunities. This year’s Winter Field Training exercise was another opportunity for the Army ROTC cadre to train our cadets in the skills necessary to become future Army o cers. The training was realistic and tough, but all the cadets learned a lot, performed well, and returned to campus safely.

Cadet Battalion Commander Fellow Cadets I am incredibly humbled and excited to serve as the Cadet Battalion Commander of the Warrior Training Battalion (WTB) at Texas A&M Army ROTC for the Spring Semester.

I am a History Major from Holland, Michigan and a member of Devil D-1 in the Corps of Cadets Throughout the Fall Semester we accomplished quite a bit. From the MSIV Program completing Operation Agile Leader allowing the class of 2021 to Commission.

Then to accomplishing a successful Fall FTX allowing Zachary Browne for the MSIII Program to hone their skills before Battalion Commander Cadet Summer Training. Finally, we managed to successfully mitigate the e ects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the program by in large. Ultimately, we all chipped in to ensure a smooth and e ective semester of training.

As we begin the Spring Semester, we look forward to another round of training opportunities. The program will begin its training by having each cadet complete the diagnostic Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT). From there each program will develop tness plans based on the needs of their units to help guide them towards the Army’s new physical tness regime. This semester Rudders Rangers will tackle their Ranger Challenge competition in late April at West Point, New York. It is the culminating event for their training regime in which some will receive the prestigious Rudders Pin. The training focus for the MSI and MSII cadets will become much more challenging this semester as well. They will build upon their individual skills learned in the fall through moving towards Squad and Platoon level tasks that will become vital during their MSII year. Training for MSIII’s this semester will continue to develop their knowledge of Platoon Level Operations in order to prepare them for Advance Camp. Finally, the goal for WTB sta this semester will be to continue to ensure programs accomplish training objectives and help the MSIV’s prepare for commissioning.

Ross Volunteer Compan The Ross Volunteer Company formed in 1887 as the Scott Volunteers. The Company changed their name in 1898 in honor of Lawrence Sullivan Ross, former governor of the state of Texas and President of Texas A&M College. Often referred to as RVs, the unit is still the o cial Honor Guard of the Governor of Texas The ceremonial uniform is an all-white dress uniform, and Company o cers carry sabers and wear red sashes inspired by the French Zouaves. Ceremonial duties include ring 3-volley, 21-gun salutes at Texas A&M’s Silver Taps ceremonies and during the annual campus Muster ceremony The RVs are the Honor Guard of King Rex, the King of Mardi Gras, in New Orleans, La. and participate in multiple parades around the state of Texas.

M

y name is Cadet Keilin O’Mara, and two summers ago, I had the opportunity to attend the U.S. Army Airborne School! Airborne School is located in Fort Benning, GA, and is the basic paratrooper training for the U.S. Armed Forces.

When I rst found out I was going, I was terri ed as someone scared of heights I never imagined I would be jumping out of airplanes Airborne School is split into three weeks: ground, tower, and jump week. Ground week primarily focuses on practicing a proper exit from the aircraft, and proper parachute landing falls (PLF) to minimize injuries. Tower week prioritizes identifying and handling parachute malfunctions, the di erent techniques to controlling and steering the parachute, and utilizes the 250 ft tower to conduct training. Jump week is where you nally jump

out of a C-17 or C-130 aircraft at 1250 feet high. To graduate from Airborne School, you must successfully complete ve jumps. It was so exciting to put all the training together, and I had 100% con dence that I would safely reach the ground. Airborne School is all about trusting your equipment and training, and all the Black Hats (Airborne instructors) did a great job making sure everyone was prepared. At 110lbs, the minimum weight for jumping, I was nervous I would oat away into Alabama, as some of the Black Hats joked, but in reality, they had taken every precaution, and I landed safely in the dropzone every time.

I am so thankful for the Texas A&M Army ROTC program and the incredible opportunities given to me while I have been a Cadet here. My favorite one has by far been Airborne School because I overcame my fear of heights, pushed and developed myself and my future Army career, and realized there is nothing more fun and exhilarating than jumping out of an airplane. One of the most rewarding moments in my life was running o the drop-zone and seeing my parents there cheering me on. I look forward to more jumps and hope to eventually be stationed at the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

ir Assault at the Sabalauski Air Assault School starts with a 0330 wakeup on Day Zero. As a class (approximately 160 students), formation occurs right outside the arches leading into the schoolhouse. Here, you are assigned a roster number and are broken into squads. From the moment you are assigned a roster number and enter the arches, everything will be done at a double time, with your canteen in your left cargo pocket, your CAC in your right breast pocket, dog tags around your next, and your casualty feeder card in your left breast pocket. Moving quickly, the class separates into squads and prepares for the equipment inspection. At Air Assault, attention to detail is imperative, so all students undergo a rigorous equipment inspection. All packing list items are checked for serviceability and to make sure they are packed “as worn”: zippers are zipped up properly, buttons are cinched, patches are in the right places, and so on. By 0530, all equipment has been checked, those who do not meet the standard are released, and all in-processing paperwork has been completed. Quickly, all students will move to the arches and prepare for the timed two mile run.

Released as a block, everyone makes their way around the course before returning to their gear to rehydrate and prepare for the next event. At the end of the run, those who did not make time are released and the remainder of the class moves to a gravel area near the obstacle course. On an elevated platform, an Air Assault Sta Sergeant moves the class into a double arm interval and has everyone ground their gear. In cadence, the various Air Assault instructors motivate the class in preparation for the next event. Towards the end of the “motivation” sessions, instructors

Apart from Day Zero, Air Assault is broken up into three phases over ten days. You can be dropped from the course for failing to meet a standard at any time, but most are cut at the testing at the end of each phase.

Phase 1 covers aircraft orientation and safety, medical evacuation operations, basic path nder operations, and di erent hand and arm signals used for ground to aircraft orientation. This phase ends on day three with a written and hands-on test. Phase 2 covers sling loads. By far the most di cult phase, Phase 2 ends on day six with a written and hands-on test regarding six di erent common sling loads. The majority of class failures will come from the hands-on testing on day six. Phase 3 covers closed side rappelling, open side rappelling, a FRIES introduction, and ends with helicopter rappelling. Phase 3 ends with hands-on testing on day 9. Finally, on day ten, the remainder of the class will conduct a twelve mile foot march with the packing list and a ri e. This must be completed in under three hours. For those that make it, graduation occurs later in the day (with ruck starting at 0430 and graduation at 1000).

The obstacles are broken down into majors and minors. You must pass all the majors and will be allowed to fail up to one minor. Instructors stage squads around various start points and begin the rotation of obstacles. As with the other events, those who did not meet the standard are released. After completion of the O-course, squads are sent into the schoolhouse itself. Here, one will receive the standards brief and will understand the structure of the course itself.

s a member of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, I had an exciting opportunity to qualify for the German Armed Forces Pro ciency Badge (GAFB).

Every year, the Corps of Cadets conducts an exchange program with the German Armed Forces. In my out t, Company F-2, we had the privilege of hosting a German o cer, Lieutenant Clement. Clement and the other German o cers provided a select number of cadets the opportunity to qualify for the GAFB that comprised of the following events 1. Evaluation Report (pass/fail event 2. First Aid Course (pass/fail 3. NBC Test (pass/fail 4. Basic Fitness Test (timed a. 11x10 m sprin b. Flexed Arm Hang keeping chin above ba c. 1000 meter run/sprin 5. Marksmanship (pass/fail event 6. Foot March (pass/fail event 7. 100 meter swim in military uniform (pass/ fail event) The quali cation Cadet Samantha Mayo process took Grade II: Silver GAFB several days and consisted of several challenging events including a physical tness, combat life saver, and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) tests. The events I enjoyed the most were the 12km ruck march and the 100 meters swim. The swim was easily the most challenging event, because it was conducted in the

Army combat uniform (ACU).

I am proud to have the privilege wearing my badge on my Texas A&M Corps of Cadets Bravos and my Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) once I received my commission as an o cer in the Army. This GAFB badge will serves as a reminder of this opportunity I had as a cadet. This experience taught me much about diplomacy with people of other cultures and another countries' military.

FITNESS PROGRAM ACFT 2.0 IMPLEMENTATION PERIOD

In October 2020, the ACFT becomes the Army’s interim PT Test. Soldiers may temporarily utilize the “plank” exercise in lieu of the Leg-Tuck to assist in transitioning to the full test.

Every year, Active Army, AGR Soldiers will take two ACFTs Reserve and Guard Soldiers will take one ACFT.

T

he Army's intent is that the ACFT will not adversely or disproportionately affect any Soldier or Cadet. No adverse administrative actions ( ags, separation, denial of appointment/commissioning, derogatory/ referred evaluation reports, Order of Merit List Standings, etc.) will be taken against a Cadet based on failing the ACFT until further guidance is published. Our obligation to our Cadets is to provide them with an immersive, integrative, and comprehensive training system to ensure their success on the ACFT. The Army Cadet Command succeeds when our Cadets succeed.

ACFT "2.0" indicates that the Army will continue to assess and evolve the ACFT (i.e. scoring standards, alternate events). We will utilize performance data from the upcoming years to inform future modi cations and updates. All

Soldiers are challenged to pass ACFT 2.0 at the Gold Standard.

As Army policy develops in FY21 and beyond, the Army recognizes we have talented Soldiers with special medical concerns or permanent pro les. The Army is committed to maintaining quality Soldiers and will develop medical and personnel policies to support this commitment.

Policy recommendations will be reviewed by administrative experts, medical experts, tness experts, senior Army Commanders/Command Sergeants Major, and Army Senior Leaders.

Further guidance will be published prior to FY22.

M

y path to Texas A&M was extremely unconventional. After nearly seven years of service as a 35M (Human Intelligence Collector) in the U.S. Army, I was honorably discharged in October of 2014. I utilized my Post- 9/11 GI Bill, enrolled at Sam Houston State University in the spring of 2015 and completed my basic courses before applying for a transfer to Texas A&M in the Fall of 2016. Upon acceptance to Texas A&M in January of 2017, I had no desire to serve in the Corps and/ or ROTC as I was pursuing a career in Federal Law Enforcement.

Captain Adam Harpham, Captain Joe Ruohonen, and Sergeant First Class Mike Brown were a few of the leaders who ensured my success while in ROTC and while transitioning from Scholar back to Soldier. I nd myself reaching out to my former cadre on a frequent basis for advice and “how-to”.

Before my rst day of class of his headquarters at Fort Bragg, North Carolina however, I was approached by Josh Sutton 17’, a prior service Army Sergeant who was the current commander of Delta Since graduation and commissioning as a Military Company, Corps of Cadets. Josh essentially was my Intelligence O cer, I have been assigned to 2nd Battalion, “sponsor” as we would call it in the Army. He linked me up 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat with other prior service veterans in D Co., several of Team, 82nd Airborne Division. Army Cyber Protection Brigade Internship

T

he objective of the CPB Internship Program is to provide interested cadets an opportunity to gain rst-hand experience of Defensive Cyber Operations (DCO) at the tactical through operational levels. This program is intended to invigorate interest in the cyber branch to assist with lling an already under strength Area of Concentration (AOC). Additionally, this internship will ful ll the internship requirement under the existing Cyber Leadership Development Program (CLDP) managed by the Army Cyber Institute (ACI) at West Point Military Academy. ACI’s CLDP provides interested cadets an opportunity to better understand the cyberspace domain and is not speci c to the Cyber AOC. The CPB internship will complement the CLDP, developing the next generation of cyber-security leaders through an intense program that immerses ROTC students in the cyber-security discipline while also educating them on becoming future military leaders. The underlying philosophy of the CPB internship is to fully embed cadets with a Cyber Protection Team (CPT) and conduct assigned mission essential tasks (METs) alongside current element leaders, led by lieutenants and captains. In addition to learning DCO related skill sets, the program will assist in developing critical thinking techniques to enable agile leadership required of all o cers in the military. The internship is a three week course that takes place at Fort Gordon, GA during the summer months to accommodate cadet’s academic workload. The program will focus on the METs associated with a CPT:

GPA 2.7 or better in academic major and must have completed their second year of college 3. Meet current APFT and height/weight standards at the time of application and during attendance 4. Contracted MS II or greater cadets.

5. Approved TS/SCI security clearance, or Interim TS/SCI. (Cadets must apply for a TS/SCI through their Brigade immediately upon selection, TS/SCI clearance processing and adjudication can take 6 to 12 months) Funding Cadet Command provides transportation and lodging funding for the assigned cadets Once candidates are selected Cadet Command will place the cadets on orders, conduct necessary coordination with assigned schools for temporary duty, and process the cadet’s pay.

Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP)

Y

ou may be able to take advantage of a program that allows you to participate in ROTC and enlist in the Army National Guard or Army Reserve at the same time, provided a vacancy exists in either a Guard or Reserve unit.

It's called the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP), and it means that while you're still in college at Texas A&M, you can be gaining valuable experience and earning extra income. In the SMP, you will be paid at the rate of at least a Sergeant (E-5) for your Guard or Reserve service. In addition, you'll receive the ROTC Advanced Course allowance as well. You'll serve as an o cer trainee in a Guard or Reserve unit and perform duties commensurate with the grade of second lieutenant. Once you graduate and receive your commission, you may continue your military service with your Reserve or National Guard unit or go on active duty. The ROTC Contract that is agreed upon will determine a cadet status. You are considered Non-Deployable during your time as an SMP Cadet!

The intent of the SMP Program is to increase o cer accessions into the Reserve Components (RC) by increasing ROTC enrollment from enlisted RC members who are attending college. In addition, contracted non-scholarship cadets and Reserve Forces Duty (RFD) scholarship cadets can join a RC unit and the SMP. Advanced Course ROTC SMP students are paid for their Guard/Reserve training and receive the ROTC allowance as well as $1200.00 per year for books. Upon completing the ROTC program, the United States Army O cer agrees to an eight-year obligation, which can be served in the Reserve Forces, on Active Duty or a combination of the two.

Eligibility Requirements

Be enrolled in college and have completed at least 30 credits.

Be under 30 years of age by graduation. Waivers can be granted if you are under 39 years of age by graduation.

You pursue an Army-approved academic major.

2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

You meet required physical standards.

Your ROTC Commitment

Participating in the SMP program requires you to take ROTC classes, which demand a few hours of your time each week. Upon graduation, you have an obligation to accept a commission and serve full-time in the Active Army, or parttime in either the Army National Guard or the U.S. Army Reserve.
