ESPIONAGE & SPYCRAFT Bloodlines of Betrayal: Nicholson Spy Case

$27 / $32

September 21 at 2:00pm – 3:30pm, Monday AG8851 – Aston Gardens at Pelican Marsh (NE Naples) Speaker: Thomas Eastwood Few espionage cases are as disturbing as that of Jim and Nat Nicholson, a father-son duo bound not just by blood, but by betrayal. Jim Nicholson, a senior CIA officer, was convicted of spying for Russia. While serving a lengthy prison sentence, he enlisted his son Nat to continue the treason. This lecture explores their actions, motivations, and how law enforcement

ultimately unraveled the plot. The case is compared to the infamous Walker spy ring of the 1980s, another father-son betrayal with devastating consequences. The discussion offers insight into the psychology of espionage, the vulnerabilities within intelligence agencies, and the chilling legacy of spies within families.

HISTORY, LAW & GOVERNMENT Paris on Fire: Napoleon III, the Siege, and the Commune $27 / $32 September 8 at 2:30pm – 3:30pm, Tuesday GO8854 – Moorings Park Grey Oaks (South Naples) Speaker: Nancy Maxwell Despite the glitter and glamor of Napoleon III’s empire and his marvelous modernization of Paris, by 1870 the emperor himself was painfully ill, and France was teetering on the verge of another revolution. A disastrous war with Prussia toppled the regime, but Paris continued to resist the overpowering Prussian army as it lay siege to the city. When the government was forced to capitulate, the city rose up to form its own defiant government. It was a doomed idea. The violent era of the Paris Commune was short lived, but its effects reverberate to this day, in surprising ways, not the least of which was art! This lecture looks at the events and social forces that pushed the “City of Light” to the brink of total destruction.

Road to Revolution: America & Britain’s Very Bitter Divorce $27 / $32 September 10 at 10:00am – 11:30am, Thursday BV8855 – Bentley Village (North Naples) Speaker: Steven Valdespino In 1754, most American colonists proudly consider themselves loyal subjects of the British Empire. They share Britain’s language, culture, legal traditions, political ideals, and cherished “Rights of Englishmen.” They also benefit from British military protection, expanding trade, and a long-standing policy of “salutary neglect” that allows remarkable local autonomy. Yet within little more than a decade, loyalty gives way to anger, resistance, and revolution. This lecture examines the escalating chain of actions and reactions that transforms a political family dispute into a war for independence. From the French and Indian War to taxation, protest, repression, and the Declaration of Independence, this program traces how Britain and America move from partnership to separation in one of history’s most consequential political breakups.

Versailles 1919: Peace, Power, and the Seeds of Conflict $27 / $32 September 14 at 1:30pm – 3:00pm, Monday BV8856 – Bentley Village (North Naples) Speaker: Nancy Maxwell The Versailles Peace Talks began with a shaky victory, exhaustion, and impossible expectations. After the armistice of November 1918, the Allied leaders had to redraw borders, rebuild a devastated Europe, respond to a vengeful public, and most importantly, pay for the war. This lecture examines the competing goals of “the big three” - Georges Clemenceau, David Lloyd George, and Woodrow Wilson - as they negotiated what they hoped would be a lasting peace. We explore reparations, new nations, colonial mandates, military restrictions, and the anger engendered by the treaty itself, and in the process gain a clearer understanding of why Versailles is remembered not only as the end of World War I, but also as the troubled beginning of a new era.

The Year Was 1968: War, Protest, and a Nation in Turmoil $27 / $32 September 14 at 2:00pm – 3:30pm, Monday AG8857 – Aston Gardens at Pelican Marsh (NE Naples) Speaker: Steven Valdespino Few years have left as deep a mark on American history as 1968. captures the political upheaval, cultural transformation, and global tensions that defined the era. Explore the seismic impact of the Tet Offensive, the USS Pueblo crisis, and the bloody siege at Khe Sanh. Revisit the shocking assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. Experience the chaos of the Democratic National Convention, the power of protest, and the meaning behind iconic moments like the Black Power salute at the Olympics. From groundbreaking films and music to the awe of Apollo 8 orbiting the moon, this lecture examines a pivotal year that reshaped a nation and defined a generation.

Forging a Nation: Italy’s Tumultuous Birth $27 / $32 September 25 at 3:00pm – 4:30pm, Friday GL8858 – Moorings Park Grande Lake (South Naples) Speaker: Nancy Maxwell Modern Italy may appear seamless today, but its creation certainly wasn’t. Until the late 19th century, the peninsula was a fragmented patchwork of city-states, foreign-controlled territories, and rival kingdoms. Unifying these diverse regions required bold vision and deep conviction, often in conflict. This lecture explores the roles of three pivotal figures: Camillo Cavour, the shrewd diplomat; Giuseppe Mazzini, the idealistic revolutionary; and Giuseppe Garibaldi, the fiery nationalist. Their uneasy alliance and clashing agendas helped bring about one of Europe’s most dramatic nation-building efforts. Learn how ambition, strategy, and passion – and a bit of outside help – overcame centuries of division to form the Italy we know today.

From Viking Raiders to Norman Lords $27 / $32 September 28 at 1:30pm – 3:00pm, Monday BV8859 – Bentley Village (North Naples) Speaker: Ken Nesbitt Before William the Conqueror claimed England, his ancestors were Viking warriors who reshaped northern France. This lecture follows the dramatic transformation of Norse raiders into Norman rulers, beginning with Jarl Rollo and the bargain that created the Duchy of Normandy. We explore how Viking settlers adapted to French language, law, Christianity, and feudal politics while preserving a fierce military culture. The story continues through 130 years of family rivalries, assassinations, shifting alliances, and wars against neighboring lords and kings. By 1060, Duke William II secures Normandy and emerges as one of the most powerful figures in France. His Viking ancestry, Norman ambition, and claim to the English throne set the stage for the conquest of 1066 and a turning point in Western European history.

Religion, Royalty and Blood: France’s Wars of Religion $27 / $32 September 30 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday SL8865 – Siena Lakes (North Naples) Speaker: Nancy Maxwell In the 16th century France, as Protestant ideas spread, Catholics and Huguenots clashed. In a kingdom already weakened by fragile monarchs, rival noble clans, and ruthless court intrigue, the civil wars tore families and the country apart, as France was buffeted by the desperate efforts of Catherine de Medici, the swaggering presumptions of the Guise family, the collapse of the Valois dynasty, and the risky gamble of Henry of Navarre. That the nation survived these years of shifting alliances, violence, and even foreign intervention is remarkable: that France eventually emerged from this dark period to become the very epitome of absolute monarchy is astonishing. The class will examine the many factors that contributed to the conflict as well as its eventual resolution.
