LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Friends: Autumn Marks a New Beginning for the FGCU Academy. The changing of seasons brings with it many new and exciting changes at the FGCU Academy. It will mark the return of programs to downtown Ft. Myers at the Collaboratory at 2031 Jackson St. Of course residents of southern Lee county can continue to enjoy offerings at the Commons Club at the Brooks. In Collier County, October will mark the beginning of programs at our new Naples Center located at 704 Goodlette-Frank Rd N., Suite 330. In November, the Academy will launch two new locations in Charlotte County. We are pleased to partner with the Military Heritage Museum in Punta Gorda located at 900 West Marion Avenue. We will also offer programs at the Florida Southwestern College Charlotte campus located at 26300 Airport Rd. This fall our program guide will only be available online. I encourage you to download a copy and share it with friends and family. We offer a rich and diverse set of in-person and online lectures for all to enjoy.

The Long Shadow of Leonardo on the Artists of Lombardy $25 / $30 October 22 at 2:30 – 4pm, Friday OL4092 – Online via Zoom Speaker: Carol Jonson Leonardo da Vinci spent 24 years of his storied career in Milan, indelibly imprinting his style on the artists of Lombardy, many of whom were students in his esteemed studio workshop.

This lecture will explore Leonardo’s works with their focus on naturalism as well as on capturing the “moti delle passioni dell’animo,” the emotions and state of mind of his subjects. We will examine how the master’s work influenced artists whose names might not be as familiar to us, including Boltraffio, Luini, Solario, Giampietrino and Melzi.

Edgar Allen Poe: American Intelligence Officer $25 / $30 November 8 at 1:30 – 3pm, Monday OL4094 – Online via Zoom Speaker: Jeffrey Steinberg This lecture will cover Poe’s little-known career as a U.S. intelligence officer, operating in Europe during the 1830s.

We will discuss his family background (his grandfather was Quartermaster General to General Lafayette during the American Revolution), his training in intelligence, his collaboration with James Fenimore Cooper, Samuel Morse, and Alexandre Dumas in attempting to spread the republican ideas of the American Revolution in Europe following the Napoleonic Wars.

America’s first and only real school of art was the Hudson River School, a 19th century art movement that was born as a way to craft a new kind of art that glorified the ideals, spirituality, grandeur and majesty of the New World of America as distinct and independent from the old world of Europe. As the school evolved, its practitioners expanded their horizons, geographically and artistically, heading to America’s west, to Central and South America, and finally to “America’s Eden” – Florida.

Victoria was a matchmaker extraordinaire! Her own marriage had been blissfully happy, but Victoria didn’t seem to care much about the feelings of her children. While chiding them about duty and obligation, she set them up with “appropriate” matches throughout Europe. A German prince, a Russian duchess – it was all part of the plan for the family, which would, to her mind, guarantee the stability of the empire. Yet Victoria herself broke her own rules in her relationship with her Scottish servant! Let’s explore the life and family of this very human, grandmotherly queen, whose grandsons ended up at war with each other.

The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, is renowned for its collections of Western art and includes important paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance and the Dutch Golden Age through the 20th century. The museum is equally famous for the architecture and the fabulous decorations in its 1,100 rooms, built by Empress Catherine the Great. This class will explore highlights of the art and architecture of this wonderful museum.

This is the story of the wisest man who ever lived, venerated among Muslims, Christians and Jews and the only king to rule over a united Israel. This lecture focuses on Solomon’s bloody rise to power, the building of the Temple, the Queen of Sheba, and Solomon’s actions culminating in the division of Israel.

Girimurugan (BeeJay) Since 1949, a popular phrase that has been seen almost everywhere in colleges, universities and industry is “machine learning.” Over the years, the popularity of machine learning led to other phrases such as artificial intelligence, deep learning and eventually data science. However, there is a significant overlap between the study of statistics and machine learning.

This lecture will discuss the origins of machine learning and how it has grown into something crucial in our day-to-day lives.

How do we know what our climate was thousands of years ago? What are the consequences of climate change? How will it affect us? Will we see it in our lifetime? How can we reverse climate change?

Is there a way to reverse climate change without destroying the economy? Finally, not everyone agrees about climate change.

Why not and what are they saying? Who is right?

Choose one of the options above. The Amazon Rainforest is world renowned for its beauty, life and mystery. Despite this global interest, little is known about vast areas of the Amazon that remain untouched by modern civilization. Florida Gulf Coast University has recently partnered with a Peruvian medical and conservation group to conduct research on amphibian and reptile communities at a newly acquired and remote research station near Iquitos, Peru. In the summer of 2019, FGCU faculty and student researchers spent 72 days in the humid Peruvian Amazon Rainforest to help document the amazing diversity.

Southwest Florida Environments $25 / $30 November 3 at 10 – 11:30am, Wednesday OL4099 – Online via Zoom Speaker: Taylor Hancock This introductory lecture will impart participants with a basic understanding of southwest Florida’s habitats and ecology via an exploration of the flow of water across the landscape.

Participants will gain a familiarity with the natural environments around them by highlighting common plants and animals in each habitat discussed. Current environmental issues will also be covered.

They present massive hurdles for environmental conservation and restoration. This lecture will cover what invasive species are, why they occur, and how they are introduced. Examples relevant to southwest Florida will be used to explore the topic providing participants a basic familiarity with common invasive species in the southwest Florida area.

Shells have been a part of many cultures for millennia. In modern times collecting shells on the beach, or shelling, has become a very popular hobby especially in southwest Florida. Most new, and even experienced, shellers have many questions on ways to improve their chances of finding exquisite shells. Some of the topics that will be covered in this lecture include: Where and when to go shelling; how to “read” the beach; methods and tools for shelling; how to identify southwest Florida shells; and how to clean, display and preserve shells.

Did you know that over 60% of people eligible for Social Security decide to begin receiving their benefit before they reach full retirement age? This permanently reduces your most important retirement asset for the remainder of your life. This class is for nearly everyone who’s ever earned a paycheck and wants every Social Security benefit dollar in which you are entitled because you paid for it so you’ve earned it. This session will review how to evaluate the advantages, disadvantages, income tax consequences and strategies of the many different Social Security options available. Understanding the scenarios for single, married, divorced and domestic partners can have a significant impact on a source of income that can represent about 40% of your retirement income but can be even more important for a surviving spouse as increased longevity creates a greater need for guaranteed income that will last as long as you live.

Statistics show that 70% of us will have a long-term care need in our lifetime. As a result of advances in medical science and pharmaceuticals, we are living longer so the probability of needing care has greatly increased. Medicare does not cover the cost of extended care after 100 days. Most want to be independent and don’t want to burden their children with their care. Sadly, even the nicest “Continuous Care Communities” don’t have the staff to provide the care you might expect. This presentation will cover in detail the importance, costs, benefits and features of traditional and “hybrid” Long Term Care products. It will be taught with a real-world perspective by an instructor that has been the caregiver for his parents for the last three years.

The textbook, Learn Spanish the Fast and Fun Way (Barron’s, 4th Ed, 2014), is required and may be purchased online at Amazon.com. Supplemental materials will be provided in class. This course will be conducted as an exercise class (for your brain muscles) rather than a lecture class. Conversation will be emphasized over grammar. If you have a trip coming up to a Spanish speaking country, we will spend some time on the culture and idioms of that country.

This course is for those who have had the equivalent of one year of high school Spanish. Even though you graduated from high school fifty years ago, you will fit right in. While the FBI failed to act with necessary urgency, dozens more victims were abused. When exposed, the FBI agents lied and attempted to cover-up their stunning inaction and misconduct.

Jeffrey Steinberg was directly involved in the investigation into the circumstances of the crash. He had access to video footage, eyewitnesses, and background material from the official French and British inquiries. He worked closely with ex-Scotland Yard senior inspector later the head of security for Harrods Department Store in London, owned by Mohammed al-Fayed. Steinberg was featured on the 2017 three-hour documentary on The Learning Channel (TLC) and on numerous interviews and shows in the U.K. and the U.S. The lecture will be both an account of the investigation into the crash and a broader look at how such investigations are carried out.

Voyage to Mars $25 / $30 December 2 at 10 – 11:30am, Thursday NC4073 – Naples Center Speaker: Edward Grace In 2020, three missions were launched from Earth with the destination of Mars. All three missions arrived at Mars in February 2021. The first Mission was by United Arab Emirates named the Hope Probe. The second was by China named the Tianwen-1 Mission. The third was by NASA named the Perseverance. The Hope Probe will remain in orbit and analyze the Mars weather patterns. The Tianwen-1 Probe has an orbiter, a lander and a rover. Perseverance has a lander, rover and helicopter drone. We will examine the objectives of each mission and provide updates on their accomplishments to date.

Artemis: Return to The Moon by 2024 $25 / $30 November 9 at 1:30 – 3pm, Tuesday BR4074 – The Commons Club at the Brooks (Bonita) Speaker: Edward Grace NASA’s Artemis Program plans a return to the moon and beyond before the end of 2024 and will include a woman in the crew who would become the first woman to walk on the moon. We discuss NASA’s plans and how the Artemis Program differs from the prior Apollo Missions. NASA has issued a contract to SpaceX to develop the Human Landing System to be used on Artemis.

The long-term plan is to build a base on the moon from which to launch explorations to other planetary bodies. The initial Artemis un-crewed launch is scheduled for November 2021.

Apollo 14: 50th Anniversary & Review of the Apollo Program $25 / $30 November 16 at 10 – 11:30am, Tuesday MM4075 – Military Heritage Museum (Punta Gorda) Speaker: Edward Grace Apollo 14 launched from NASA’S Kennedy Space Center carrying astronauts Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell and Stuart Roosa in January 1971 making 2021 the 50th anniversary of this important mission. Their objective was to deploy the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package, but a faulty Abort Switch jeopardized the lunar module landing. Your speaker today was involved in developing the mission-saving, erasable program for the crew, which they entered into the Guidance Computer manually in order to temporarily override the faulty control.

Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work saving the astronauts of the Apollo 13 crew, Ed Grace will share with us an inside view of the Apollo program.

Hubble Unravels the Mysteries of the Solar System $25 / $30 November 30 at 1 – 2:30pm, Tuesday CO4078 – The Collaboratory (Downtown Ft. Myers) Speaker: Ken Selger The Hubble Telescope continues to unravel Solar System mysteries 30 years after launch. This lecture, led by a Hubble design team member, discusses what scientists now know about the solar system. Learn about the Solar System moons and why our moon is dramatically different. Find out who Hubble was and why he is important. And then there’s politics.

NASA had to navigate the political game while trying to create the most important scientific tool of the century from a flawed mirror. Finally, the question, “Are we alone in the world?” will be answered.

Space Exploration: History and What Does the Future Hold? $25 / $30 December 10 at 1 – 2:30pm, Friday CO4079 – The Collaboratory (Downtown Ft. Myers) Speaker: Edward Grace This lecture begins with a brief look back at space exploration history: Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, International Space Station and the Shuttle. The presentation continues with a review where we are in space exploration today, looking at private spaceflight companies including SpaceX, Blue Origin, Sierra Nevada, United Launch Alliance (Lockheed Martin and Boeing), Virgin Galactic and many others. Finally, we look at what is next including the Moon, Mars, Titan or some other celestial body. Our speaker was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work on the Apollo 13 mission.

A Novel Experience (4-part series) $80 / $95 October 28, November 4, 11, 18 at 10 – 12pm, Thursdays OL4082 – Online Speaker: Lisa Wroble If you have always wanted to write a book but do not know how to begin, then this workshop is for you. Learn the stages of the writing process as you plan and organize your book and explore characterization and plotting along with basic fiction elements. Those interested in writing nonfiction learn the importance of back-matter, envisioning the layout, using photos and diagrams and other details important to successful nonfiction. All writing levels are welcome. Bring a summary of your writing project or idea to the first class.
