LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
This time of year always means a lot to me. The end of another great school year has come to a close and we get a chance to reflect back on the past year’s accomplishments. With graduations and awards ceremonies, it is a time of change and a time of great optimism for many. I truly believe the opportunities for our graduates are unlimited. One thing I noticed about this past school year is our students have been more involved and engaged in raising money and awareness for various causes than ever before. As the school year wound down I still heard buzzing around campus for all manner of things including: Garage Sale for Haiti, volunteer awards, birthday parties to benefit food banks, and so much more. It is fabulous that our students have such a desire to serve others. 1 Peter 4:10 states, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” It seems that mindset has been the focal point for our students, and our faculty could not be more supportive.
Thad & Monica Butts Leaving CH&BS
It is with mixed emotions that we announce Thad and Monica Butts will be leaving CH&BS at the end of the 2010/11 school year. For the past four years, Thad served as Assistant Principal and Monica taught the fourth grade. Thad has accepted the position of Principal at Gulf Coast Christian Academy in Summerdale, AL. Thad states, “Our decision to leave was incredibly difficult. I literally had to pray, ‘God, I cannot make this decision. I am incapable of it. Make this ing professional decision abundantly clear.’” This is an excit wish them all of opportunity for the Butts’ family and we d, Monica, and God ’s blessings in their new endeavor. Tha our campus and their two children have been a true joy on f Coast. we know they will be a great addition to Gul
Summertime for the residents here at CH&BS has been a wonderful whirlwind of church camps, mission trips, sports practices, and beach excursions. Several of our residents had the opportunity to visit a theme park for the very first time. At the Mount Dora Children’s Home, we know that summer should be a time for relaxation and making memories, and we are striving to make this a summer the kids will never forget. I would like to take this opportunity to express my genuine appreciation to our friends and donors for having that same spirit of sharing with others that I see in our students. Interestingly enough, many of our students have learned the value of serving others by watching your walk. Because of your generosity, CH&BS has the privilege of serving children, youth and families. It takes what each one of us can do, to complete the circle of making a difference. For the children,
James E. Moore
Eli Weaver Re tires
The head of Maintenance at CH&BS, Eli Weaver, retired at the end of May after nearly forty years of service. He and his wife, Linda, are relocating to their home in North Carolina. In his years at CH&BS, Eli has been Head of Grounds, Housekeeping, and Maintenance . President James Moore states, “There is nowhere on this 70 acre campus that Eli has not seen, and there is nothing that Eli cannot fix!” At the annual Staff Dinner, Eli was given spec ial recognition for his dedication to CH&BS. In attendance were his 90-year old father, and his son, Bill Weaver. A luncheon was also held on May 26 so all the local vendors and cont ractors who worked alongside Eli over the past forty years coul d come and wish him well. Eli believes in the mission of CH&BS and has a special love for this place. His positive influence has helped shape the beautiful campus and his presence will be grea tly missed. CHILDREN’S HOME
Antarius
Graduates
Antarius Holley, the only senior living in the Children’s Home, graduated on May 27 with the 46 member CH&BS class of 2011. Keith and Kelly Robinett have been houseparents to Antarius for seven years. He says, “My house parents mean a lot to me. I’d like to make them proud.” Thus far, Antarius has done so. He recently scored a 29 on his ACT and has remained busy with the Robotics team. He is also active in his church youth group and has participated in mission trips to Jamaica and Miami. Antarius plans to attend Harding University in the fall and major in Civil Engineering. Eventually, he hopes to own his own engineering firm. His housemother Kelly explains, “He’s been led, and now he’s a leader.”
Welcome TO OUR
New Houseparents
The Mt. Dora Children’s Home is pleased to welcome new houseparents for Burton Cottage, Chris and Tonya Hagan. Chris is the brother of former Director of Church Relations, Tom Hagan. They have two children, Haley (10th grade) and Siera (7th grade), who will be enrolled in the Bible school. Chris and Tonya were both raised in Tennessee, but are coming to us from Valdosta, GA, where they served for the past two years as houseparents (Child Care Supervisors) at the Raintree Village Children’s Home. 4 | Imagine Magazine Summer 2011
Award Winners in the Children’s Home Layla Jenkins received Special Recognition awards in Marine Science, Algebra I, and Life Management/Personal Fitness. She also received an award for Perfect Attendance. Her Marine Science teacher, Mrs. Barker, states, “Layla was the hardest worker in the class. She completed all her work to the best of her ability.” Angel Ramsey received a Special Recognition Award in American History for bringing up her average TEN percentile points over the course of the school year. Breeanna Bardonnex was recognized in conjunction with the CH&BS Band for straight Excellent rating at State Music Performance Assessment (MPA) and straight Superior rating at the Tampa Bay Classic. Antarius Holley received the Senior Stagehand Award for Drama and graduation cords for International Thespian Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. Tonya graduated from Freed Hardeman in 1991 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. She worked for Family Dynamics Ministry as an Assistant Teacher and Ministry Consultant before becoming a houseparent. Chris held the position of District Sales Manager for The Leaf Chronicle and was previously employed by Central Transport. Social worker Johnnie Coley affirms, “This is very exciting for us.” Welcome Chris and Tonya!

Joy of Giving
There’s been a lot of talk and advertising recently about Gift Annuities on television and in print media (the 800 pound gorilla for one). And for good reason. Their many benefits include: • Security • High Rate of Return • Tax Advantages • Flexibility • Satisfaction in providing for others And, effective July 1, rates will be going up for those over the age of 75. In today’s uncertain economy, this is welcome news. If you would like more information on how you can achieve your financial goals and support Christian Home & Bible School, please call the Development Office at 352-383-0762 to request a free brochure.
Summer Activities
for Children’s Home
The summer has been filled with many activities for the kids living in the Children’s Home. Several have spent a week or two at Central Florida Bible Camp while others have attended various sports camps. The older kids, J’Varzeia and Antarius, have taken on leadership roles to help the younger ones. Antarius was a counselor at Teen Week at Central Florida Bible Camp and J’Varzeia helped coached basketball for over SEVENTY children, ages 5 to 15. Headmaster Pat Todd says, “J’Varzeia is a natural leader and the kids at basketball camp were thrilled to have him teach them the fundamentals. He’s a great talent and has a dynamic personality.”
CHILDREN’S HOME
Tampa
Benefit Dinner
A large and receptive crowd of nearly 340 came to the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Tampa to learn more about the Mount Dora Children’s Home. Speakers included President James Moore, Social Worker Johnnie Coley, Single Parent Brandie Woodard, and teenager Taylor Parr (pictured right) from Thompson House. Attendees were entertained by the vocal harmonies of “The Plungers” from the Bay Area Church of Christ and “Stirred Hearts” from the Bell Shoals Church of Christ. The event included a Silent Auction and raised over $27,000 toward meeting the needs of the children and families supported by CH&BS. Future dinners will be held in Nashville (August 27) and the early part of next year.
GIRLS GO ON
Mission Trip The girls living in Thompson House traveled to Mobile, Alabama in June for a mission trip. This was both a service trip to help families with the tornado aftermath and a chance to host Vacation Bible School for younger children. The girls had a great time and got to experience the gratification that comes from helping others.

Graduates at the HECC CEREMONY
Drop Saver Poster Contest Ten elementary students were recognized by the Mt. Dora Chamber of Commerce for their poster creating abilities as demonstrated in the 2011 “Drop Saver” Water Conservation Contest. Congratulations to the following students: Peyton Jafroodi, Nina Pruitt, Hannah Leto, Emily Leto, Danielle Christopher, Joelli Mattison, Rha’Niyah Cody, Kayla D’Arpa, Skyler Pascarella, and Molly Elenz.
Learning Adventures Hosts
Rainforest Café
The second annual HECC Graduation, honoring the 4-year old preschool class of 2011, was held on May 16 in the CH&BS auditorium. President James Moore, Headmaster Pat Todd, and Preschool Principal Rosemary Thornhill awarded thirtyeight diplomas and congratulated the excited preschoolers. The audience, filled with parents and relatives, was wowed by the 45 member Bulldog Band playing the Star Spangled Banner, Serengeti Dreams, and of course, Pomp and Circumstance. Seventeen seniors from the CH&BS Class of 2011 followed the preschool march into the auditorium. These seventeen students attended CH&BS for more than thirteen years, from Preschool through graduation. A reception was held in the cafeteria after the ceremony for the graduates and their proud families.
Elementary
Talent Show
CH&BS hosted the Elementary Talent Show on April 26 in the CH&BS auditorium. It was directed by Mr. Doug Poyet, Elementary Music Instructor. This year there were a record number of participants: 75 children! Musical acts included singing, piano, guitar, and one pink violin. There were also a number of karate routines and speech monologues. This fun event is held to encourage public speaking and performing. All 75 participants were awarded certificates at the close. 6 | Imagine Magazine Summer 2011
The Learning Adventures classes (kindergarten and first grade) hosted a four day Rainforest Café in the CH&BS cafeteria. For every $100 they raised, they were able to purchase an acre of rainforest. In total, the Café was able to raise $707.21 and save seven acres in Guatemala and Honduras. Last year they raised money for rainforests in Costa Rica, but this year, they chose Guatemala and Honduras because of the number of students with ties to those countries. Teacher Lori Hadley states, “We wanted our students to learn the importance of caring for the earth, preserving natural habitats, and that money has to be earned in order to provide for our needs and wants.”
Students Start A Positive Trend:
Parties for a Cause
A new trend has emerged among CH&BS secondary students: birthday parties for a cause. Rather than accept traditional gifts, several students have asked for donations to their favorite charity. Sarah Montgomery, 12th grade, threw a huge party inviting all of her friends and requested donations to benefit starving children in Haiti. (Earlier in the year she also participated in “Hats for Haiti” in which students could pay a dollar to wear a hat to school. She then hosted a garage sale on campus that
MDB MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL generated $2,500. That is enough money to feed 10,000 starving children in Haiti!) She collected over $350 from her friend’s gifts. Sarah states, “It is not okay with me to sleep in a warm bed and have all the food I need while others have nothing. I want to be able to say that I made a difference in someone’s life.” Regan Burt, 11th grade, hosted a pool party and accepted canned food items to support the Lake Cares Food Pantry in Mount Dora. She says, “It’s important to support the local community and I hope by hosting a birthday party with a cause I can inspire others to become more involved in helping others.” Melissa Hill, 11th grade, also hosted a birthday party and accepted canned goods for the Mount Dora food bank. Ema Kossin, 11th grade, requested children’s toys to donate to Toys for Tots, a program that distributes toys as gifts to needy children. Headmaster Pat Todd remarks, “At Christian Home & Bible School we value service to others. Watching our students grasp that concept and take it to another level by adopting causes that they are passionate about lets us know that we are headed in the right direction.”
DUKE UNIVERSITY
Talent Identification Program
The Duke University (TIP) 7th grade Talent Search program focuses on the identification, recognition, and support of high academic students. These students take the college entrance exams along with high school students. CH&BS talent search participants earned scores that far exceeded their grade level.
Mathlympics at LSCC
Eight CH&BS students (Keith Shamrock, Blaine Ramsdell, Frank Goodman, David Maddux, Matthew Hoban, Matt Collins, Chace Miller, and Grant Kim) competed at Mathlympics held at Lake-Sumter Community College. Each team was given a set of problems to work out, and teams were scored based upon the speed and accuracy of their work. The CH&BS team placed 8th overall.
Congratulations to the following students who qualified for the Duke TIP Program: Michaela Allen, Paloma DeLeon, Jordan Gingerich, Mia Larson, Morgan Longieliere, Amanda Lux, Garrett Marshall, Kylee McCall, and Amelia White. The following earned ACT test scores that were high enough to be recognized by the state: Paloma DeLeon, Mia Larson, Morgan Longieliere, and Garrett Marshall. Imagine Magazine Summer 2011 | 7

MDB FINE ARTS
Secondary Theatre Produces a
Broadway Medley Show
This spring, the Fine Arts Department at CH&BS presented their fifth musical production, Catch a Dream. The production was an original piece written by one of the theatre students, Chandler Larson. He wove a narrative story with popular Broadway songs from over ten shows (Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Wicked, etc.). The premise involves a young boy and girl (sixth graders Owen Conner and Lillian Garback) who came from homes where heartbreak and hurt resided. Act I begins with the two
young children attempting to get away from their everyday lives by escaping into carefree, pleasant dreams. Act II involves a digression into a series of nightmares. Chandler Larson remarks, “The play…is a sequence of dreams, a series of lessons or feelings.” One teacher who viewed the play, summed up the overall feeling about this unique production, “Kudos to Mr. Barker, the cast, and crew of Catch a Dream! What a great concept and a wonderful performance!”

How to Eat Like a Child
Under the direction of Mrs. Sarah Garback and Mrs. Rhonda Hammond, the MDB Children’s Theatre enacted How to Eat Like a Child, based on the book by Delia Ephron. The play is a series of skits, set up in a “how to” format, about what it means to not be a grown-up. Lessons included “How to act after being sent to your room,” and “How to express an opinion,” all from the knowledgeable perspective of different children. The young actors took on wonderful leadership roles and demonstrated growing skills in both acting and singing.
The Women’s Committee on Fine Arts of Mount Dora, a local art organization that raises funds all year long to sponsor scholarships for student artists, has awarded nine scholarships to CH&BS students this year. Out of fourteen total scholarships in the community, CH&BS won a record 64% of scholarships! Winners in the Visual Arts category were Alma Guyton, Melissa Hill, Joshua Hooper, Sarah Montgomery, Chloe Rider, and Matthew Rumbley. Winners in the Performing Arts category were Mark Mansfield, Maeghin Mueller, and Anna Catherine White. This year’s winners received their scholarship awards May 4th at a luncheon held for parents, teachers, and members of the community. Imagine Magazine Summer 2011 | 9
