Thank you

A message from the Head of Fettes, Helen Harrison

When I became Head of Fettes in June, I was immediately inundated with encouraging messages from Old Fettesians, parents and colleagues, which exemplified for me the uniquely supportive warmth of the Fettes community. I am honoured to have the opportunity to lead Fettes and I am thrilled to be at the helm as the school heads in to its 150th anniversary celebrations along with the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first girls through the doors.

Having been part of the Fettes family for over 20 years as a parent, a teacher, a House Parent, Deputy Head and now Head, I believe it is our collective belief in Fettes College, its history and its ethos that gives this wonderful community such strength. I am humbled by and grateful for the support, energy and considerable effort that continues to deliver priorities such as the provision of means-tested bursaries, ongoing support for careers and engaging with our global family.

Your support makes all the difference Fettes is lucky to benefit and draw strength from an energetic, generous and vibrant global family. In the Development Team we engage with and connect Old Fettesians, parents, former staff and other friends of Fettes who support each other and the work of the school. 2018-19 was another busy and successful year for us. Donations continued to help transform lives by providing bursaries and support for trips and tours, including a fantastic Lacrosse Tour to Canada in summer 2019. Gifts received towards the Pavilion Restoration Project have enabled Fettes to move ahead with plans to deliver this project in the not too distant future.

Gifts of time and expertise continued to support Fettesians considering the next steps in their respective career journeys, whilst dedicated Old Fettesian Association Regional Representatives and Committee members helped gather OFs together at more than 30 events across the world. Whether you support Fettes by giving up your time; providing expertise or by making contributions to the Fettes Foundation, I am deeply grateful to you for the part you play in enhancing our work to provide a strong foundation for the future and a family for life. Nicola Pickavance, Director of Development

A Fettes education is and should remain a currency that really matters to every pupil who receives it. I want to provide Fettesians with the best all-round boarding education that we can deliver, whilst instilling in them an understanding of what a privilege it is to be part of this community. I hope this will ensure that the Fettes family continues to grow stronger as this great school looks forward into an exciting future. Expert Panel Event

Life-changing bursaries There are many talented and ambitious young people not ordinarily in a position to benefit from the life-changing opportunities offered by a Fettes education. But thanks to the generosity of our bursary donors, these children have the chance to access a world class all-round education at Fettes, setting the strongest possible foundations for their future. Sir William Fettes’ founding ethos to educate deserving young people is as important today as it was almost 150 years ago when Fettes opened and, as such, the Fettes Foundation remains committed to increasing philanthropic income towards bursaries.

We greatly appreciate the vital support we are given which provides our bursary recipients with the opportunity to thrive and embrace all that Fettes has to offer whilst making friends for life. In October 2018, we were thrilled to receive an anonymous gift of ÂŁ1.2 million which enabled us to launch our new Fettes Kick-start programme. This is providing full bursarial support to two children from low income families in Edinburgh to join the Prep School each year.

Bursaries = 70 100% bursaries = 20 80%+ bursaries = 38

We are deeply grateful for all gifts towards bursaries which impact not just the pupils but their families and generations to come.

T he transformational power of education is widely recognised and acknowledged, but the extraordinary generosity of the Kick-start programme has created a genuine opportunity for two local children and Fettes Prep School. We have been able to reach out to our local community and together, identify potential beneficiaries. This magnificent donation has energised our community and truly honoured the amazing vision of Sir William Fettes. Adam Edwards, Headmaster of Fettes Prep

Pavilion Restoration Project – planning permission We are delighted to report that an application for planning permission to sensitively restore, refurbish and extend Fettes much-loved Category B Listed Pavilion will be submitted in the coming weeks. The project, which will cost in the region of £600,000 is being funded by generous donors. Thanks to philanthropic support from Old Fettesians, current and past parents, former staff and the Fettesian Trust, we have secured 90% of these funds. This tremendous backing from the Fettes community has given the Buildings Committee the necessary confidence to move ahead with this important project. 5

The Pavilion was built in 1906, just over 30 years after Fettes College opened its doors. It is an iconic Fettes landmark and holds special memories for many. It will remain the motivational, historical and nostalgic place it has always been, but it will be improved and advanced to provide Fettesian sportsmen and sportswomen with a place to gather to discuss team performance and tactics and to host visiting teams and their supporters.

Team boards, dating back to 1870, will be restored and updated for display and, for the first time, will include girls’ boards. Our Archivist is looking at options to display sporting memorabilia in situ and photographs digitally, as part of our ongoing project to digitise the Fettes archives. As you will see on the following pages, we are looking forward to welcoming the Fettes community to the Pavilion for a Festival of Sport in May 2021 to celebrate Fettes 150th anniversary.

Help us cross the finish line For well over a century the Pavilion has been at the heart of sporting life at Fettes College. It has always been more than just a building. Steeped in nostalgia, it is deserving of this structural restoration and sensitive refurbishment for the decades ahead. We are so very close to our goal and would be immensely grateful for support from the Fettes community to help us cross the finish line. If you would like to help, please do not hesitate to call or email Nicola Pickavance on +44(0)131 241 1003 or n.pickavance@fettes.com. Remembering Fettes in your will Much has been achieved at Fettes over many years, thanks to generous benefactors who have followed in Sir William Fettes’ footsteps and remembered Fettes in their wills. Fettes was to a large extent responsible for creating the person I am today and whilst at the time I didn’t always appreciate it, the years have proven that Fettes very ably equipped me with the life skills I needed to meet opportunities and challenges alike. I’m happy to be able to give something back by leaving a legacy to the Fettes Foundation to assist some of those Fettesians who’ll follow in my footsteps. David Allardice (Mo 1978-1984)
