Thank You from The Head I am proud to be surrounded by a caring community that supports our students to flourish. On the pages that follow you will see the impact of this support in 2022–2023, through donations towards bursaries and the Pavilion, career advice and guidance for Fettesians, and a global network of Old Fettesians ensuring that Fettes is a family for life.

I remain extremely grateful to you all for supporting the work of the Development Team at Fettes, for inspiring pupils and providing them with a wealth of opportunities to benefit from. This enables them to leave school ready to make a positive mark on their rapidly changing world.

This year has also been a time of change for the Development Team. In the summer we

said farewell to Nicola Pickavance after eight years as Director of Development. Under Nicola’s leadership, the Fettes Foundation has been fortunate to receive generous donations totalling £8m, with sums towards bursaries quadrupling between 2016 and 2022. I am so thankful to each and every donor for your contribution. We have now welcomed Michael Stitt as Director of Development and I hope that many of you will get the chance to know him in the coming months and years.

Bursaries We are so grateful to everyone who made a donation in 2022–2023 to benefit students at Fettes.

Thank you to everyone who chose to support our bursary students this year through just some of the following activities:

Our main fundraising efforts focused on increasing support towards transformational bursaries. These fully funded bursaries enable children to develop their talents, realise their full potential and achieve their ambitions through a Fettes education, regardless of their family means.

ANNUAL APPEAL Our annual appeal was sent in March to raise funds for 100% bursaries and kindly featured stories from previous bursary recipients.

We were delighted to receive donations from Old Fettesians, current and former parents, current and former staff, and friends of Fettes.

FUNDRAISING DINNER

Our oldest donor is 102 and our youngest donor is 22

Parents and guests generously supported a black-tie dinner raising funds towards transformational bursaries, to cover extras such as sports tours, trips and music lessons for bursary students. Some proceeds also went to two South African charities chosen by our touring sports teams.

LEAVERS’ DEPOSITS

77 donors giving for 10+ years consecutively

In May we asked parents of Leavers to donate to the College the deposit they paid when their child started at Fettes, to go towards 100% bursaries. It means so much when families are willing and able to give back to support other deserving children.

LEGACIES In 2022–2023 we received more than £100,000 towards bursaries from gifts in wills. It is humbling to receive generous bequests from those who choose to follow in the footsteps of Sir William Fettes by supporting future generations of Fettesians.

Careers The support of parents and Old Fettesians is invaluable to our Career Partnership Programme. The breadth of knowledge and experience across our community is a fantastic resource, and we are so grateful to those who give up their time to share their expertise and advice.

This is hugely beneficial to those looking for guidance, and we are so thankful to those who volunteer to help others this way.

“The OF lunch brought all of the L6 a great chance to see firsthand what the opportunities are after graduating. We all met a variety of people with many stories of what life was like beyond Fettes. They brought great insight into the numerous routes one can take after school.

Some conversations changed people's ideas of universities to go to and paths to go down, whilst others strengthened the course choice and paths by giving them personal advice from what their experiences were like.”

L6th Careers Prefect who attended the Commem Careers Lunch “Thank you so much for this opportunity. It was helpful to practice speaking my ideas and my thought process out. I was really encouraged by the feedback I received following the interview. I was given lots of ideas about what I could look at and revise in preparation for the actual interview.”

Oxbridge Applicant who took part in a practice interview Sixth Form students intending to apply to study in the US were joined online by young OFs from Princeton, Columbia, USC, Brown University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Each represented a different period of the US Higher Education pathway and provided fascinating insights.

“We’re managing an increasing number of student applications to US universities. Having a network of support from recent leavers now studying in the US is very insightful and helps us to provide first-hand life experiences. This live webinar provided invaluable hints and tips on all aspects of the US College journey. I am hugely grateful to all who took part.”

Richard Smith, Head of International University Liaison 50 students chose to discover more about careers with creativity, technology and entrepreneurship. We were joined by 10 members of the Fettes community, each with a unique career journey to share and a diverse

and global portfolio of experience: film, animation, video games, ethical journalism, media, creative agencies, finance, venture capital, startups and sustainable energy and infrastructure. Students found the event extremely helpful: “It was so useful to see that each of the entrepreneurs had had a different start and that studying something you enjoy at university is so important.”

“I learned that everyone has to start somewhere, it is ok to change your mind, and you need to fail lots of times in order to learn and to develop.”

“One expert offered sound advice: learn to write well, think critically and have an international perspective and make time to read.”

In February, 400 students, parents and teachers (including 160 students from Edinburgh high schools) gathered for our Higher Education and Career Exploration Day. During the day, we were joined by 40 parents and Old Fettesians from a huge range of professions who had generously volunteered to chat to students about their career journeys, answer questions and offer informal advice. Entrepreneurs Mike Gammell (Inv-Ki 2001–2007) and Duncan Keith (Inv-Ki 2000–2006) kindly took part in our Opening Panel Session. All of the attendees got a great deal of insight and inspiration from the day to refine their thoughts on their steps beyond school.

Community Fettes is a family for life, with a strong global network of committed volunteers including the OFA Committee, 33 Regional Reps, and Trustees of Friends of Fettes College Inc. in the USA. We greatly appreciate all those who give their time and energy to strengthen these connections and make all members of our community feel welcome, wherever they may live, work or travel.

In 2022–2023, the Old Fettesian Association supported OFs to keep in touch with each other, with nearly 1,000 attending events including Commemoration Weekend and the 150th anniversary of Carrington House, and more than 4,600 receiving the OF Newsletter. During the month of May, members of the Fettes Community were invited to participate in the Fettes Global Golf Challenge. Entries were received from Old Fettesians, parents, current students and staff. Courses were played in Canada, Hong Kong, Italy, Nepal, New Zealand, the USA and the UK. Many thanks also to those who played for the OF Golf Society this year.

Pavilion In 2022–2023, thanks to generous donations and legacies, the first phase of the refurbishment of the Pavilion was completed.

Work was carried out to improve both the interior and exterior of this historic building, including the roof, cupola, woodwork, drains, plastering, painting, flooring and addition of IT technology and Wi-Fi to support teaching.

The original honours boards for both boys’ and girls’ teams have been remounted with any missing or incorrect boards completed.

Work is ongoing to ensure these are up to date with current teams.

We greatly appreciate every contribution to this project which has made the work possible so far. The Pavilion has been at the heart of sporting life at Fettes for well over a century, and through kind philanthropic gifts it will remain an inspiring and motivational place suitable for the decades ahead.

Since the refurbishment, students have told us that the Pavilion is a place that: • gives a sense of history, honour and pride • helps teams to connect and go out and perform at their best • empowers students • elevates sport at Fettes.

In September we were delighted to invite Pavilion donors and guests to celebrate the completion of the first phase of the refurbishment and to see the significant transformation made possible through their generosity.

In recognition of our gratitude to donors, a donor board is displayed proudly at the entrance of the Pavilion, with major supporters of the project reflected in several new cornerstones. Thank you again to everyone who supported this project to enhance our much-loved Pavilion for Fettesian sportsmen and sportswomen today.

Further Projects Alongside support for bursaries and the Pavilion refurbishment, gifts to the Fettes Foundation funded a variety of other projects in 2022–2023. Thank you to each and every donor who made the following featured projects possible. Your donations make a difference to Fettesians on a daily basis.

“Following on from the success of our recently established Flute Group in the Edinburgh Competition Festival (joint 1st place!), the music department has undertaken the purchase of a new department Trevor James Flute. With the steadying expansion of the Flute Group, having a department flute on hand for rehearsals and individual lessons, we can continue to support this relatively new ensemble to the department, after their proven first success earlier in the year.”

Alex Read, Music Administrator “I wanted to let you know how grateful we all are at Fettes Prep and to report that funds have been put to very good use. The School Council (an elected pupil body) let me know that many children were keen for outside benches and quiet areas to be created outside. A variety of

benches and tables were purchased, all made from recycled plastic, and these have proven very popular during the sunny summer term. In addition, we have purchased a new basketball hoop. I am pleased that listening to the pupil voice, being aware of environmental concerns and creating a more inclusive attitude to break times have all been made possible through this project, thank you.”

Charlie Minogue, Prep School Headmaster Funded by the Fettes Foundation in 2021, Fettes Radio continues to grow. In 2022–2023, Fettes Radio went live for the first time in the autumn term with official chart shows in October and a festive special in December.

A series of podcasts were delivered, and students ranging from Third Form to Sixth Form were able to get involved.

“A very kind squash donation has greatly enhanced the squash games activity but also team squash, through the purchase of instructor bags complete with training aids, various training balls and new rackets.

In addition, we now also have a projector meaning that coaching can be filmed then immediately played back on the white wall.

This will allow instant feedback and a chance to analyse performance. A big thank you from squash staff and Fettes players.”

Rhys Rowlands, CCF Contingent Commander/ Head of Outdoor Pursuits, i/c Squash “The Biology Department was able to purchase a gel electrophoresis kit to use with Sixth Form in an experiment that is commonly done at universities but rarely touches the hands of school students. Legacies Every generation of Fettesians has benefited from the generosity of those that have gone before them, beginning with the legacy of Sir William Fettes. It is very special to see this tradition of philanthropy continue.

In 2022–23, the Fettes Foundation received legacies towards the Pavilion, bursaries, and unrestricted funds to be used where the College needs it most.
