M r s . C y n d e e H a w k i n s , H o n o r B a n d

Cyndee Hawkins taught band and orchestra in grades 5 12 for 33 years prior to her retirement in 2015 For 28 of those years, she served in the Lafayette High School pyramid in Lexington, Kentucky, primarily as band director at Jessie Clark Middle School Her previous teaching experience included positions in Virginia and Texas, and serving as an adjunct instructor of Instrumental Music Pedagogy at Transylvania University Cyndee is currently the Technical Editor for RWS Music Company and also frequently serves as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and instructor/coach at the middle school and high school level As a part of these activities, she pursues her career long quest to cultivate young oboists and bassoonists. In 2010, Mrs. Hawkins joined the staff of Music For All Summer Symposium, where she taught in the Young Directors/Middle School Directors track for ten years. In 2016, she served as Chief Adjudicator at the Victoria School Music Festival for Young Bands in Melbourne, Australia.

A native of Spring Green, Wisconsin, Mrs Hawkins holds the Bachelor of Music Education from James Madison University and the Master of Music (conducting) from Morehead State University She did additional graduate study at Texas Tech University Her primary teachers were James Sudduth and Dr Richard Miles Mrs Hawkins was named the 2000 2001 Middle School Teacher of the Year by the Central Kentucky Music Educators Association In 2007, she was honored as Kentucky’s Bandmaster of the Year Cyndee Hawkins lives in Lexington with her husband Ben They have two grown sons, Jay and Turner She enjoys reading, travel, and cheering on her beloved Wisconsin Badgers and the Green Bay Packers, in which she is a proud shareholder.

MAnne Wilcheck Schuessler grew up in Owensboro, Ky and started playing the clarinet in band at Longfellow Elementary School She attended Southern Middle School and graduated from Owensboro High School in 1982 She was a member of the Owensboro Youth Orchestra from 1978 1982 During her junior and senior year of high school, Anne was tutoring clarinet students at SMS. This is where her lifetime love for teaching started. For her bachelor’s degree in Music Education, she attended the University of Evansville and studied with clarinetist, Dr. David Wright. In 1983, she began subbing with the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and the Evansville Philharmonic. In 1984, she won the 2nd clarinet/Eb clarinet audition for BOTH orchestras and began her professional playing career at the age of 19. While continuing to play in both orchestras and giving private lessons, Anne attended Indiana University for her Master’s Degree in Clarinet Performance While at I U , she studied clarinet with Anton Weinberg and James Campbell and was a Wind Conducting student of Ray Kramer In 1989, she was accepted into the Artist Diploma Program at I U , but was also offered her first teaching job at Boonville Middle and Boonville High School in Indiana She decided to take the teaching job, continued to teach private lessons, and was still playing in both orchestras. She also started playing with the Evansville Symphonic Band during this time.vbAnne was the Director of Bands at Daviess County Middle School and was assistant band director at DCHS from 1990 1998. Anne then moved to Henderson North Middle School and assisted at HCHS from 1998 2000. From 2000 2008, Anne started her own private lesson business in Evansville called “Perfect Practice” and taught 70 students a week that were coming from Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois. She was also the Woodwind Caption Head, Clarinet, Sax and Flute instructor for Castle High School from 2001 2008. In 2008, Anne started teaching band full time again at McGary Middle School and is assisting with the William Henry Harrison High School Band. In her spare time, Anne enjoys teaching private lessons, playing for weddings, playing Principal clarinet with the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, and worshiping God by playing in church services. Anne is married to Jeff Schuessler. They have 3 adult children that are all happily married and they are also blessed with 5 Grand Buddies.

Mrs. Froedge served as Director of Bands at North Middle School and Assistant Director at North Hardin High School for the past 11 years. She had over 180 students from grades six through eight enrolled in the North Middle School program, over 30% of the student population. Under Mrs. Froedge’s direction, the North Middle School Band consistently received distinguished ratings at KMEA Concert Band Festival. Her students earned distinguished ratings at KMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival and actively participated in honor bands. The North Middle Symphonic band was an invited performance ensemble at the KMEA State Convention in 2014, and was selected as one of five middle school bands to perform at Music for All’s National Middle School Festival in 2015 During her tenure as assistant director, the North Hardin Band performed at the Music for All Festival 2011, KMEA In Service conference in 2012 and 2017, and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in 2015 and 2021 Mrs. Froedge received a B.A. in Music Education from the University of Kentucky where she served as the CMENC president and performed in the UK Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. She studied clarinet performance with Dr. Scott Wright, and a semester with Professor Peter Simpson on bassoon. In 2010, she was awarded the George Hurst Memorial Scholarship for her advocacy for music education and graduated magna cum laud. Mrs. Froedge’s professional affiliations include NAfME, KMEA, KEA and NEA. In 2013, Mrs. Froedge was awarded the Middle School Director of the Year from the Fourth District. In 2015, she was awarded the Outstanding Young Band Director Award by Phi Beta Mu. Mrs. Froedge has been invited as a clinician in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arizona for middle school honor bands. She also has been an invited clinician to work with high school band programs in Indiana, Missouri, and Oklahoma She has served on the board of directors for the Heartland Winds Community Band, and as a district officer for KMEA She is currently serving as the executive director for the Kentucky Band Organization Mrs Froedge resides in Elizabethtown, KY with her husband, Brian and their son, Fitzgerald Marshall Froedge

Mr. Walker is the current director of bands at B. Michael Caudill Middle School in Richmond, KY. Born and raised in Corbin, KY he is a graduate of South Laurel High School Walker received his Bachelors of Music Education, Masters of Instrumental Conducting, and Rank 1 in School Administration from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY He has taught for nineteen years at the elementary, middle, and high school levels

Mr Walker also serves as Camp Director and Operations Manager of the Stephen Collins Foster Music Camps held annually each June on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University. He has served as an administrator for 9 years and 10 years as camp director. Foster Music Camps are in its 88th season and retains title as the second oldest music camp in the nation providing band, orchestra, vocal, piano, and percussion experiences for grades five through twelve

Mr. Walker is a frequent conductor, presenter, and adjudicator at various events such as the KMEA State Solo and Ensemble Festival and his bands consistently receive distinguished ratings at State Concert Assessment. His main instruments are trombone and jazz piano. He is currently the pianist for Miss Direction, a local jazz and funk band. Additionally, Walker is in his twenty-second year as KMEA State Music Professional Development Conference Manager.

In 2010 Walker was named KMEA District 11 Middle School Music Teacher of the Year. In 2013 he was awarded the KMEA Citation for Service State Award and the KMEA State Friend of Music Award. In 2012 Foster Music Camp was awarded the KMEA State Friend of Music Award. He is an active member of the Kentucky Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Education and Kentucky Association of Professional Educators. He currently resides in Richmond, KY.

Murray State Bands

Wind Ensemble

Symphonic Band

Both concert bands are open to all students regardless of major Each ensemble performs contemporary and traditional wind band repertoire and present several concerts each semester. Audition is required for Wind Ensemble.

Racer Band

The 200+ member Racer Band is made up of students from nearly every academic major on campus and provides entertainment at all MSU home football games The Racer Band performs at high school band competitions and hosts the Festival of Champions on campus every year.

Jazz Ensembles

Jazz ensembles at Murray State have a rich tradition of excellence. Jazz bands are open to any student on campus regardless of major and require a short audition for seating placement at the beginning of each semester.

Racer Pep Band

The Racer Pep Band performs at all the Men's and Women's home basedball games and travels to tournament games in March. This group is open to any student on campus and meets November March each year
