Neulich konnte man in den helveti schen Depeschen nachlesen, dass ein regelrechtes Clubsterben eingesetzt hat. Schuld daran haben, und jetzt kommts dick, die Jungen, die schlicht nicht mehr soviel bechern wie die Babyboomer. Waren es früher noch 3 Bier, eine Flasche Wein und ein paar Gin‑Tonics, so ist dies heute ein Rooibos‑Tee und ein alkoholfreies

Bier. Um Mitternacht ist Schluss mit Lustig, denn am Morgen muss man pünktlich und ausgeruht und noch vor der Arbeit zum Yoga.

Dear friends

Just recently you could read in the Swiss press that clubs are dying out. The blame for this lies with the young, who simply don’t drink as much as the baby boomers. What used to be three beers, a bottle of wine and a few gin and tonics is now a rooibos tea and a non‑alcoholic beer. The fun stops at midnight, because in the morning you have to be on time, rested and ready for yoga before work.

There’s nothing wrong with that. Nor can it be wrong per se that young people today are living healthier and more conscious lives. It’s just a shame that the club back then built its business case precisely on the former: they hired bands and musicians (today probably DJs) and financed them through the bar’s profits.

Dagegen ist nichts einzuwenden. Auch kann es ja nicht per se falsch sein, dass junge Menschen heute wohl gesünder und bewusster Leben. Dumm nur, dass der Club von damals seinen Business‑ Case genau auf den ersteren aufgebaut hat: man engagiert Bands, Musiker (heute wohl: DJs) und finanzierte diese quer via die Einnahmen an der Bar.

Damit ist nun Schluss: soeben hat der älteste Club, das Zürcher Mascotte (ehe mals: Hazyland), seine Pforten nach über 100 Jahren für immer geschlossen. Gleichzeitig macht ein Aufschrei nach Subventionen für Musikclubs die Runde. Der Staat soll hier regulieren. Klar ist: jemand muss die Zeche bezahlen. Mäze natentum ist je länger je wichtiger. Klar ist auch, dass die meisten Musik strömungen in irgendeinem CLUB ihre Wurzeln haben. Wo sonst sollen junge Bands ihr Profil formen? Auf Spotify? Auf Youtube? Der Live‑Auftritt, das analoge Beisammensein ist nicht nur für junge Künstler von grösster Dring lichkeit, sondern auch für eine funktio nierende Gesellschaft. Deshalb glauben wir an unser kleines Club Festival. Mehr denn je.

That has now come to an end: Zurich’s oldest club, the Mascotte (formerly Hazyland), has just closed its doors for good after more than 100 years. At the same time, there is an outcry for subsidies for music clubs. The state should regulate here. One thing is clear: someone has to pay the bill. Patronage is becoming increasingly important. Da Vinci and Michelangelo also needed the Medicis.

It is also clear that most music trends have their roots in some CLUB or other. Where else should young bands shape their profile? On Spotify? On YouTube? The live performance, the analogue being together is not only of the utmost urgency for young artists, but also for a functioning society. That’s why we be lieve in our little club festival. More than ever.

Alles begann damit, dass einer hinging und befand, der Dracula Club wäre eigentlich ein ziemlich cooler Jazzclub. Das Festival da Jazz hatte seine Main Stage und seine Identität. Schnell kamen weitere Bühnen und Locations dazu – stets mit dem hehren Wunsch, aussergewöhnliche Spielorte für grossartige Künstler zu finden. Nach St. Moritz strömen keine Tausendschaften für ein Jazzkonzert. Also muss man den Hundertschaften etwas Aussergewöhnliches bieten. Folgend eine Übersicht der Bühnen für 2025. Viel Vertrautes, nichts Langweiliges.

DRACULA CLUB

Unsere geliebte Main Stage. Das Herz und die Seele des Festival da Jazz St. Moritz. Von Gunter Sachs gegrün det und nun unter der Leitung von Künstler und Designer Rolf Sachs. Der «Dracula’s Ghost Riders Club» ist im Winter Dreh‑ und Angelpunkt des St. Moritzer Partylebens. Im Sommer öffnet der Club für unser beschei denes Festival seine Pforten. Viel Platz bietet er nicht, dafür erleben Sie bei uns die intimsten Konzerte mit den Stars der Jazz‑Szene. Sein urchiges Interieur verbreitet eine charmante Aura, weit weg von seelenlosen Kon gresszentren und austauschbaren Konzerthallen. Die unglaubliche Nähe zwischen Künstlern und Publikum wird von beiden Parteien ungemein geschätzt. Ein Mangel an Sitzkomfort wird durch die einzigartige Stimmung mehr als wett gemacht.

Our main stage our very DNA! Thanks to myths, fairy tales and truths, the Club of the Vampires, founded by Gunter Sachs in 1974, has over the years be come a legend and under the presidency of his holiness, the designer and profes sor with a chair in England, his highness Rolf Sachs, it has definitely gained cult status. Intellect and humour come together here, even if it is just to leave the daily grind behind for a while. Here it’s improvisation with a capital I. Since 2007 the vault has been given a breath of fresh air: jazz. The Dracula Club is the heart of the Festival da Jazz. With just 150 seats it offers an ideal club atmosphere and a delightful tem porary home for artists and visitors alike.

Der kleine, idyllische Stazersee ist das schmuckste Naherholungsgebiet der Region. Auch dieses Jahr freuen wir uns auf ein Sunrise Concert am Morgen und ein echtes Happening zum Sonnenuntergang. Das Festival «get together» schlechthin. Und bereits zum zweiten Mal: Ein stim mungsvolles Chorkonzert um halb sechs.

The small but enchanting Lake Staz is the prettiest spot for leisure and relaxation in the region. Again this year, we are looking forward to a sunrise concert in the morning and a real blast for sundown. The quin tessential get together at the Festival. And for the second time: An enchant ing choir concert at half past five in the morning.

Seit 1910 (!) finden auf dieser schmu cken Waldlichtung die legendären Kurkonzerte der Camerata Pontresina statt. Seit 2017 darf auch das Festival da Jazz diesen Zauberflecken bespielen. Wir freuen uns 2025 auf einen weitern Ausflug mit Grégory Privat am Flügel.

Since 1910 (!) the Camerata Pontresina performs concerts at this pristine location in the woods near Pontresina. Luckily, since 2017 the Festival da Jazz is also al lowed to produce a little magic in this one of a kind location. In 2025 we are looking forward to the amazing talents of Grégory Privat.

Der Ort, wo alles begann. Bevor das Festival dank Rolf Sachs im Dracula Club Unterschlupf finden konnte, organi sierten wir erste Konzertreihen im Wein keller des Hotels Kronenhof. In regel mässigen Abständen kehren wir mit grosser Freude zurück an den quasi prä‑historischen Ursprungsort des Festi vals.

The place where it all began. Before the festival could find shelter in the Dracula Club thanks to Rolf Sachs, we organ ized the first concert series in the wine cellar of the Hotel Kronenhof. At regu lar intervals we return with great pleasure to the pre‑historic place of origin of the festival.

Der traumhafte Ballroom des Badrutt’s Palace gehört nun schon seit mehreren Jahren zu unseren beliebten Bühnen. Roter Samt, sehr viel Wärme – ein echter Ballsaal eben.

Wir begrüssen einen weiteren Satellit im Kreise der Festivallocations. Hübsch über Madulain gelegen, wurde diese Burg im 13. Jahrhundert erbaut. Bringen wir etwas frischen Wind in die Ruinen mit den schier unzählbaren Bläsern von «Traktorkestar».

Technisch versierte Musikerinnen und Musiker sind in der aufstrebenden Jazzgeneration reichlich vorhanden. Doch aufgrund technischer Fähigkeiten alleine, springt der Funken eben noch nicht. Jakob Manz hingegen bringt eben beides: Innovative, lebendige Jazzmusik und einen energischen, freudvollen Auftritt, bei welchem Musiker nicht bloss auf den Boden starren. Schon einmal erprobt bei einem Late Night Konzert vor zwei Jahren, nun bereits im Haupt programm. Und das Chaos, welches un sere Opening Night mit sich bringt, muten wir auch nur den talentiertesten Acts zu. Aufladen und loslegen.

There are plenty of technically skilled musicians in the up and coming jazz generation. But technical skill alone is not enough to ignite the spark. Jakob Manz, on the other hand, brings both: innovative, lively jazz music and an energetic, joyful performance in which musicians don’t just stare at the floor. Successfully tested at a late night concert two years ago, now in the main pro gram. We’re sure they can handle the chaos that usually ensues with our opening night. Load up and get going.

Irving Berlin darf man getrost auf dem Mount Rushmore der Komponisten des letzten Jahrhunderts vermuten. Seit einigen Jahren widmet sich das Jazz quartett «My Lena», neben anderen Werken des Great American Songbook, dem Giganten Berlin mit besonderem Fokus. Verspielt und liebevoll arrangiert und mit einem Schuss Moderne ver edelt.

Irving Berlin can be safely assumed to be on the Mount Rushmore of com posers of the last century. For some years now, the jazz quartet “My Lena” has been devoting special attention to the giant Berlin, alongside other works from the Great American Songbook. Playfully and lovingly arranged and refined with a dash of modernity.

Auch heute noch bezieht man sich bei Jesus Molina gerne auf seinen Durchbruch, welcher, ganz modern, über die sozialen Medien erfolgt ist. Längst hat er aber bewiesen, dass er nicht einfach ein Instagram Pianist ist. Er ist endgültig angekommen in den höheren Sphären des Jazz, was seine unzähligen Kollaborationen mit den Grössen der Szene beweisen. Nach seinem mehr als erfolgreichen Festival da Jazz Debut vor einem Jahr und einem Kurzbesuch zu Ostern, freuen wir uns auf die Fortsetzung der Geschichte. Mit dabei im Gepäck sein neues, bereits gefeiertes Album «Saleh». Sprudelnd und energisch.

Even today, people still like to refer to Jesus Molina’s breakthrough, which, in true modern fashion, came via social media. However, he has long since proven that he is much more than an Instagram pianist. He has finally arrived in the higher spheres of jazz, as his countless collaborations with the greats of the scene prove. After his more than success ful Festival da Jazz debut a year ago and a short visit at Easter, we are looking forward to the continuation of the story. He will be bringing his new, already acclaimed album “Saleh” with him. Effer vescent and energetic.

Die Violinen sind gut vertreten 2025. Daniel Hope mit dem ZKO, Nigel Kennedy im Duo. Den Reigen kom plettiert Tobias Preisig, seines Zei chens auch ein Wiederholungstäter am Festival. Zusammen mit dem Schlagzeuger Alessandro Giannelli betreibt er seit Jahren das erfolg reiche Projekt «Egopusher». Stilistisch ist die Musik mit dem neuen Album «Beyond» noch immer ihrer eigenen «Soundtrack‑meets‑Club‑Ecke» zu zuordnen. Clubbige, tanzfreundliche Elemente gepaart mit einer klas sisch‑zeitgenössischen Komponente. Aus Sunny Bar wird Moonlight Club.

The violins are well represented in 2025: Daniel Hope with the ZKO, Nigel Kennedy as a duo. Tobias Preisig, somewhat of a regular at the festival, completes the line‑up. Together with drummer Alessandro Giannelli, he has been running the successful ‘Egopusher’ project for years. ChaChaMania – ein Name als Pro gramm. Michael Bucher (Gitarre, Komposition) und seine Mitstreiter – Patrick Sommer am Bass und Kaspar Rast an den Drums – nehmen uns auf eine Reise durch Klangland schaften, die weit über Kuba hinaus gehen. Funk groovt, Pop glänzt, Jazz verwebt sich mit afrikanischen Rhythmen. Eine Fusion, die bewegt – mal subtil, mal mit voller Wucht.

ChaChaMania a name as a call for action. Michael Bucher (guitar, com position) and his comrades‑in‑arms Patrick Sommer on bass and Kaspar Rast on drums take us on a journey through soundscapes that go far beyond Cuba. Michel gilt zu Recht als eine der besten Stimmen Europas auf der Trompete und dem Flügelhorn. Seine meisterhafte Phrasierung ge paart mit subtiler Melodieführung zeich nen ihn aus. Zeit also für eine Aus zeichnung von unserer Seite. Ob in von Michel geführten Gruppen oder als gefragter Kollaborateur für unzählige weitere Projekte, sein Spiel begeistert die Hörerschaft seit knapp 40 Jahren. Wir gratulieren und verneigen uns.

This is the seventh time that the Festival da Jazz presents the “Franco Ambrosetti Jazz Award”. Our good friend, the trumpeter and grand seigneur of European jazz, personally supports selected musicians. In 2025, the prize will go to Matthieu Michel. Michel is rightly recognised as one of Europe’s greatest voices on the trumpet and flugelhorn. His masterful phrasing paired with subtle melodic lines characterise him and set him apart. So it’s time for an award from our side. Whether in groups led by Michel or as a sought‑after collaborator for countless other pro jects, his playing has delighted audiences for almost 40 years. We congratulate him and take a bow.

Am Festival darf natürlich immer mit höchster Qualität der Musikerinnen und Musiker gerechnet werden. Um sich auf diesem hohen Niveau noch abzu heben, braucht es den sagenumwobenen X Faktor, die geheime Zutat, welche die Zuhörenden bannt und zu Fans wer den lässt. China Moses hat davon kübel weise. Sie ist, ja, eine herausragende Sängerin, die nie enttäuscht. Aber mehr noch eine Geschichtenerzählerin. Ihre Konzerte sind nicht bloss aneinander gereihte Songs, ihre Konzerte sind Reisen. China Moses wird auch dieses Jahr den kleinen Dracula Club mit ihrer gewinnenden Art verzaubern. Dankbar lassen wir es geschehen.

Of course, you can always count on the highest quality musicians at the festival. In order to stand out at this high level, you need the legendary X‑factor, the se cret ingredient that captivates the audi ence and turns them into fans. China Moses has bucket loads of it. She is, yes, an outstanding singer who never dis appoints. But she is even more of a story teller. Her concerts are not just songs strung together, her concerts are jour neys. Celebrate Weather Report

Man munkelt, Festivalgründer Jenny lädt die Yellowjackets auch darum gerne ans Festival, weil er einfach gelbe Jacken mag. Ihr letzter Besuch ist nun aber eine Weile her und eine erneute Reise nach St. Moritz längst überfällig. Diesen Sommer freuen wir uns auf eine Kollaboration auf allerhöchstem Niveau. Gemeinsam mit dem Sänger und Grammygewinner Kurt Elling wagen sich die Fusion Grossmeister an das Werk von «Weather Report». Eine Hommage und Neuinterpretation ge nährt vom innovativen Geist der Yellow jackets und Kurt Elling gleichermassen.

Rumour has it that festival founder Jenny likes to invite the Yellowjackets to the festival because he simply loves yellow jackets. But it’s been a while since their last visit and another trip to St. Moritz is long overdue. This summer we are looking forward to a collaboration at the very highest level. Together with singer and Grammy winner Kurt Elling, the fu sion grandmasters are venturing into the work of “Weather Report”. An homage and reinterpretation fuelled by the inno vative spirit of the Yellowjackets and Kurt Elling in equal measure.

Der in Martinique geborene Pianist Grégory Privat etablierte sich in kurzer Zeit zu einem der prominentesten Musiker der neuen Jazzszene. Seit 2015 ist er Mitglied im Liberetto‑Quartett des schwedischen Bassisten Lars Dani elsson. Gleichzeitig veröffentlichte er mehrere, hochgepriesene Trio‑Alben und begeisterte 2022 mit dem Solo werk «Yonn» auch als Sänger und Komponist mit höchst einfühlsamen Piano‑Melodien, stark harmonischen Vocal‑Parts und dem ganz besonderen karibischen Akzent!

Wer bereits fünf Grammy‑Awards im Schaukasten stehen hat, bedarf vermut lich keiner ausführlichen Vorstellung. Dianne Reeves darf mit Fug und Recht schon seit Jahren als eine der prägends ten und bedeutendsten Jazzstimmen der Gegenwart bezeichnet werden. Sie sang noch mit Harry Belafonte, für Obama und selbst neben Simon Rattle und seinen Philharmonikern. Eine Grande Dame dieses Kalibers bei uns im kleinen Dracula Club – wohlge merkt nicht zum ersten Mal – das ver spricht ein weiteres Festival‑Highlight. Hinkommen und wegfliegen.

Anyone who already has five Grammy Awards in their showcase probably needs no further introduction. Dianne Reeves can justifiably be described as one of the most influential and important jazz voices of our time. She has sung with Harry Belafonte, for Obama and even alongside Simon Rattle and his Philharmonic Orchestra. A grande dame of her calibre at our little Dracula Club not for the first time, mind you promises to be another festival highlight. Come and fly away.

Stargeiger Daniel Hope und das Zürcher Kammerorchester nehmen uns mit auf eine musikalische Reise in die Vereinigten Staaten der 1930 er‑, 1940 er‑ und 1950 er‑Jahre. Im Pro gramm treffen vier Komponisten auf einander (Weill, Gershwin, Bloch, Bernstein), die allesamt selbst als Immigranten in die USA kamen oder in Einwandererfamilien hineinge boren wurden – und zu jenem vibrie renden «Melting Pot» beitrugen. Ebenfalls dabei: drei erstklassige Jazz musiker, Joscho Stephan, Johannes von Ballestrem und Dimitri Monstein. Das Jazztrio trägt mit seiner Spiel freude im Sinne der amerikanischen Tradition das Fundament zu dieser Reise.

Die groovige Bassistin Ida Nielsen hat aus ihrer Zeit neben dem kleinen Genie reichlich Funk eingepackt. Heute zelebriert sie selbst eine wuchtige Show, welche von der ersten Sekunde mitreisst. Anyone who could hold their own along side the legendary Prince not only had to be a force to be reckoned with on the instrument, but also put on a show. Funk bassist Ida Nielsen has absorbed plenty of groove from her time alongside the little genius. Today, she herself celebrates a powerful show that is captivating from the very first second. Als Mitglied des legendären «Rat Pack» erlangte Dean Martin Unsterblich keit. Für unzählige Lieder des «Great American Songbook» setzte er be züglich deren Interpretation den Gold standard. Hampa Rest huldigt diesem Œuvre mit seiner Kunstfigur Luigi Panettone in einer grossen Tribute Show. Mit Band und Streichern lässt er die wundervollen Klassiker originalgetreu aufleben. Und das alles im stimmigen Cresta Palace: That’s Amore!

Dieses Konzert ist auch im Package mit dem Konzert um 21 Uhr vom «Joscho Stephan Trio» und einem asiatischen 3‑Gang Dinner erhältlich.

Dean Martin achieved immortality as a member of the legendary “Rat Pack”. He set the gold standard for the interpre tation of countless songs from the “Great American Songbook”. What a catch for the festival! The Joscho Stephan Trio is one of the most exciting formations on the acoustic guitar scene. Characterised by the exquisite guitar skills of bandleader Joscho Stephan, the result is a modern evolution of classic swing à la Django Reinhardt. The trio impresses with reinterpreted classics of the genre, as well as with their own com positions, which integrate elements of Latin, classical, pop and rock. Deutlich zu lange ist es her, dass Stefan Rusconi am Festival da Jazz in die Tasten griff. Damals noch mit «Rusconi», dem aufregenden Trio, welches mit unbändi ger Spielfreude und Musikalität zu be geistern wusste. Nun, nach einer länge ren Pause vom Instrument hat Stefan Rusconi mit «Solace» ein wunderbares Solo‑Album eingespielt. Perfekt be schreibt es Frank Heer von der NZZ: «SOLACE ist ein introspektives, medi tatives und trotzdem überaus zugängli ches Album geworden, melodisch und zart, mit fast sakralen Strukturen und mit magischer Einfachheit.»

It’s been far too long since Stefan Rusconi took the stage at the Festival da Jazz. Back then, it was with “Rusconi”, the ex citing trio that knew how to inspire with its unbridled joy of playing and musical ity. Now, after a long break from the instrument, Stefan Rusconi recorded a wonderful solo album, “Solace”. Frank Heer from the NZZ describes it perfectly: “SOLACE is an introspective, medita tive and yet extremely accessible album, melodic and delicate, with almost sacred structures and magical simplicity.”

Es darf gewissermassen als Fluch und Segen betrachtet werden, dass Ludovico Einaudi das allererste Konzert am Lej da Staz gespielt hat. Die Atmosphäre, welche Einaudi im hübschen Natur schutzgebiet herbeizauberte, bleibt bis heute unerreicht. Seine spartanischen und oft melancholischen Kompositionen verleiten Menschen weltweit zum Träu men. Kaum vorzustellen, wie kraftvoll und einnehmend seine Musik im deut lich intimeren Rahmen im Badrutt’s Palace wirken muss. Wir schmiegen unsere Köpfe an seine liegenden Akkorde und lassen uns treiben. Kommen und träumen.

In a way, it can be seen as both a curse and a blessing that Ludovico Einaudi played the very first concert at Lej da Staz. The atmosphere that Einaudi conjured up in the beautiful nature re serve remains unrivalled to this day. His spartan and often melancholic com positions entice people all over the world to dream. It’s hard to imagine how powerful and engaging his music must be in the much more intimate setting of Badrutt’s Palace. We nestle our heads against his comforting chords and let ourselves drift. Nigel Kennedy is and remains one of the most exciting and unpredictable musi cians of our time. He works equally well in either a classical or jazz club setting and can also pass for a punk without any reservations. He has already played various venues here. His jump into the indoor swimming pool at the Hotel Bären after his concert remains unforget table. Further bold leaps of a creative nature are sure to follow. Wenn Pontresina und seine Gäste für «Viva la Via» durch die Strassen ziehen, bedarf es Musik, welche sofort mit Swing und Verve die Tanzbeine moti viert. Dafür stellt das Festival «The Killin’ Jivers» bereit: Dreckig, frech und voller Aufruhr – das war die Jazz kultur der 30 er Jahre und das kann sie heute auch noch sein, wie die Killin’ Jivers beweisen. Mit Vorbildern wie «Slim and Slam» und «The cats and the fiddle» holen sie den Jazz wieder zurück auf die Showbühne und nehmen sich dabei nicht zu ernst.

When Pontresina and its guests parade through the streets for “Viva la Via”, you need music that immediately motivates your dancing shoes with swing and verve. The festival provides “The Killin’ Jivers” for this: Dirty, cheeky and full of turmoil that was the jazz culture of the 1930 s and it can still be that today, as the Killin’ Jivers prove. With role models such as “Slim and Slam” and “The cats and the fiddle”, they bring jazz back to the show stage without taking themselves too seriously.

Sängerin Roberta Gambarini, dem «usual suspect» und schillernden Aaron Goldberg am Piano, Dario Deidda, dem wohl einzigen Bassisten, der am eBass tatsächlich swingen kann und Gregory Hutchinson – «dem Schlag zeuger seiner Generation» – auch ein alter Bekannter am Festival da Jazz. Sie werden tüchtig einheizen, bevor sie dann die Bühne freimachen für die zwei Bands, welche sie intensiv während 5 Tagen gecoached haben.

To make the evening of the “New Generation #JazzLab” even more excit ing and dynamic, both the mentors and the two winning bands will be per forming on the same night. The bril liant mentor band features none other than the three time Grammy nominated and internationally acclaimed vocalist Roberta Gambarini, the dazzling Aaron Goldberg our “usual suspect”— on piano, Dario Deidda, probably the only bassist who can truly swing on the electric bass, and Gregory Hutchinson —“the drummer of his generation” a familiar face at the Festival da Jazz. Two friendly singers with some very massive pop hits in the early 90 s. Then came the scandal: who actually sang the hits? In the meantime, a lot of water has flowed down the Inn and Fab Morvan, himself the original Milli Vanilli singer, proves today that he has always been able to do more than just sing playback. One big hit for us, many hits for the Sunny Bar. Girl, you know it’s true!

Alex Wilson war schon oft ein Trumpf an unserem Festival. Sein neuestes Pro jekt dürfte hier ebenfalls Wellen schla gen: Mit einer kraftvollen Rhythmus gruppe mit Steve Winwoods Schlagzeu ger Edwin Sanz, dem gefragten Bassis ten Dimitris Christopoulos und Alex, der 80er‑Jahre‑Keyboard‑Sounds und Salsa‑Montunos einfliessen lässt. Die gefühlvollen Vocals von I.S.A. werden von der wundervollen Sängerin Aquilla Fearon unterstützt.

Alex Wilson has often been a trump card at our festival. His latest project should also make waves here: with a powerful rhythm section featuring Steve Winwood’s percussionist Edwin Sanz, the sought‑after bassist Dimitris Christo poulos and Alex, who incorporates 80s keyboard sounds and salsa montunos, the soulful vocals of I.S.A. are performed and supported by the wonderful singer Aquilla Fearon.

Doch schon während ihres Studiums erblühte ihre Liebe für Gesang und Schauspiel. Sie entdeckte Weill, Eisler und Brel. Als begeisterte Varieté‑Darstellerin lernte sie Gesang und Schauspiel zu kombinie ren. Heute ist O’Sullivan eine unglaub lich aufregende, ausdrucksstarke Künst lerin. Ein Chamäleon, welches perfekt in die «Farbe» jedes Songs eintauchen kann. Etwas David Bowie hier, etwas Nick Cave da – schlicht wie gemacht für den alten Weinkeller im Kronenhof.

Her mother is an artist, her father a racing driver. Her degree: architecture. Correct! Camille O’Sullivan has even won prizes for the work she had first studied. But her love of singing and acting blossomed during her studies. She discovered Weill, Eisler and Brel. As an enthusiastic “Varieté”‑actress, she learnt to combine singing and acting. Today, O’Sullivan is an incredibly exciting, expressive artist. A chameleon who can perfectly immerse herself in the “colour” of any song. Georgische Accapella im Morgentau

Das Anfang 2005 gegründete Vokal ensemble Shavnabada ist ein wichtiger Akteur auf dem Gebiet des mehr stimmigen georgischen Gesangs. Seine Aufgabe sieht Shavnabada in der Er haltung und Förderung des georgi schen polyphonen Gesangs, der 2001 von der UNESCO als immaterielles Kulturerbe der Menschheit anerkannt wurde. Die Reise führte das Ensemble auf Expeditionen durch verschiedene Regionen Georgiens, wo verborgene Musikstücke entdeckt und diese zeit losen Lieder sowohl lokal als auch auf internationalen Bühnen präsentiert wurden.

Founded in early 2005, the vocal ensem ble Shavnabada is an important player in the field of Georgian polyphonic singing. Shavnabada sees its mission in the preser vation and promotion of that specific style, which was recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of hu manity in 2001. The journey took the en semble on expeditions through various regions of Georgia, where hidden pieces of music were discovered and these timeless songs were presented both locally and on international stages.

«Vollenweiders Musik ist wie die Volks musik eines geheimnisvollen Stammes eines unbekannten Landes auf einem noch nicht entdeckten Kontinent», schreibt die New York Times. Seit mehr als 40 Jahren hat Andreas Vollenweiders Musik für Millionen Menschen eine besondere Bedeutung: als Quelle der Hoffnung, aber auch als Möglichkeit des Rückzugs, um wieder Kraft und Zu versicht tanken zu können. Der Rahmen bildet das legendäre Album «Caverna Magica» aus dem Jahr 1983, welches durch Songs aus sämtlichen Werken Vollenweiders ergänzt wird. Diese unver gleichliche Magie dürfen wir in den frühen Morgenstunden am Lej da Staz erleben. Einzigartig und einmalig.

Das Konzert um 8.08 Uhr ist kostenfrei zu besuchen. Bei schlechtem Wetter findet das Konzert um 11 Uhr im Reine Victoria statt. In diesem Fall werden auf unserer Website kurzfristig Tages tickets erhätlich sein.

For more than 40 years, Andreas Vollen weider’s music has had a special mean ing for millions of people: as a source of hope, but also as a way to recharge one’s batteries and regain confidence. Im Idealfall ist man als Veranstalter nicht einfach austauschbar und es gelingt mit Künstlerinnen und Künstlern über Jahre eine Beziehung aufzubauen, welche beide Seiten gleichermassen beflügelt. Genau diese Art der Beziehung pflegt das Festival zur Jazzrausch Bigband. Eine Naturgewalt, eine Band, welche furchtlos Jazz dem Dancefloor schmack haft macht. Nach «Bruckner’s Break down» letzten Sommer freuen wir uns schon wippend auf die Fortsetzung der Geschichte. Diesen Sommer wird Gustav Mahler in die Jazzrausch Matrix verlegt. Wuchtig, mächtig, gut.

Ideally, concert organisers are not simply interchangeable and are able to build up a relationship with artists over the years that inspires both sides in equal meas ure. It is precisely this kind of relationship that the festival cultivates with the Jazz rausch Big Band. A force of nature, a band that fearlessly makes jazz palatable to the dancefloor. Feine Fanfaren, marschierender Takt und geschwungene Melodien zu Beginn. Die Stimme Ursinas webt sich in die Musik und am Schluss befinden wir uns auf einem Flug durch eine Geschichte, die Sehnsucht und Freiheit zugleich ver spricht. Die gebürtige Bündner Sänge rin und Songwriterin schreibt Lieder, die den Goût von Pop und das Rück grat von Folk haben und von den musi kalischen Stimmungen des Nordens und der Melancholie der romanischen Volksmusik beeinflusst sind. Ursina singt Englisch und manchmal auch in ihrer Muttersprache Rätoromanisch.

Fine fanfares, a marching beat and sweeping melodies at the beginning. Ursina’s voice weaves itself into the music and at the end we find ourselves on a flight through a story that promises longing and freedom at the same time. The Grisons‑born singer and songwriter writes songs that have the flavour of pop and the backbone of folk and are in fluenced by the musical moods of the north and the melancholy of Romansh folk music. Im grossen Regal der Jazzplatten finden sich sogar einige albumlange Erkundun gen der Melancholie, welche Klassiker status erlangt haben. Christian Sands fünftes Album darf als gewichtiger Beitrag zu diesem Dunstkreis angesehen werden. Sands’ Album ist nichts weniger als eine filmische Erzählung über die Phasen der Trauer, geschaffen von einem der besten jungen Komponisten des Jazz. Traurig, schön und unglaublich er hebend.

The history of Jazz is full of stirring songs and ballads in the thematic field of failed love. The great shelf of jazz records even contains some album‑length explo rations of melancholy that have achieved classic status. Christian Sands’ fifth album can be seen as a significant contri bution to this collection. Sands’ album is nothing less than a cinematic narrative about the stages of grief, created by one of the best young composers in jazz. Sad, beautiful and incredibly uplifting.

Brass a Gogo

Wenn sich die Blaskapelle Traktorkestar als «herz‑ und kopfzerreissend» be schreibt, weiss man, woher der Wind bläst. Nämlich aus einer ganzen Wagen ladung Blasinstrumente. Von Hoch geschwindigkeits‑Discogrooves bis zu himmelhoch jauchzenden Heimweh melodien wird nichts ausgelassen. Trak torkestar verbinden nicht nur eigene Musik mit jener des Balkans, sondern schlagen auch Brücken zwischen Stadt und Land, zwischen Tradition und Moderne, sprich: zwischen Traktor und Orchester. Wir zitieren weiter: «Für die Einen gipfelt die Darbietung im Tanz rausch, für die Andern auch.»

When the brass band Traktorkestar de scribes itself as “heart‑ and head‑tugging”, you know where the wind is blowing from. Namely from a whole truckload of wind instruments. Nothing is left out, from high‑speed disco grooves to sky‑high wistful melodies. Traktorkestar not only combine its own music with that of the Balkans, but also build bridges be tween city and country, between tradition and modernity, in other words: between Traktor and orchestra. We quote further: “For some, the performance culminates in a dance frenzy, for others too.”

MANON MULLENER TRIO

Manon Mullener ist eine der vielver sprechendsten jungen Jazzmusikerinnen in unseren Breitengraden. Studiert hat sie unter anderem in Kuba. Heute verbinden ihre Kompositionen wie Reisetagebücher die Destinationen ihres Lebens. Havanna, New York und die Schweizer Heimat. Lebendig und intim in einem.

Manon Mullener is one of the most promising young jazz musicians in our part of the world. She studied piano in Cuba, among other places. Today, her compositions link the destinations of her life like travel diaries. Havana, New York and her Swiss homeland. Lively and intimate all in one.

Tough Stuff

Es gibt kaum eine Bühne an unserem Festival, welche nicht schon von Iiro Rantala bespielt wurde. Gerne laden wir den charmanten Finnen fast jedes Jahr zu uns ins Oberengadin. Sein Schalk und Humor gehören bei Rantala ebenso zur Show wie seine galoppie rende Musikalität. Oft durften wir ihn solo am Flügel geniessen, ein paar Streicherinnen hatte er auch schon im Schlepptau. Nun freuen wir uns ihn endlich mal mit seinem quirligen «HEL Trio» bei uns begrüssen zu dürfen. Für Rantalas Verhältnisse fast schon klassisch, unterstützt durch Kontrabass und Schlagzeug.

There is hardly a stage at our festival that Iiro Rantala has not performed on. We are delighted to invite the charming Finn to the Upper Engadine almost every year. Rantala’s wit and humour are just as much a part of the show as his galloping musicality. We have often been able to enjoy him solo on the grand piano, and he has also had a few string players in tow. Now we are delighted to finally be able to welcome him with his lively “HEL Trio”. Almost classical by Rantala’s standards, supported by double bass and drums.

LILLY MARTIN

Kein Wunder hat Lilly Martin vor ein paar Jahren den «Swiss Blues Award» eingesackt. Ihre soulige und eben Blues‑affine Stimme thront mit einer natürlichen Selbstverständlichkeit über dem satten Sound ihrer Band. Die gebürtige New Yorkerin vermengt spielerisch Soul, Gospel und Blues – die Sounds, mit welchen sie aufgewachsen ist – zu ihrem eigenen Süppchen, welches hierzulande auf vielen Bühnen gern konsumiert wird.

No wonder Lily Martin bagged the “Swiss Blues Award” a few years ago. Her soulful and blues‑afine voice sits enthroned above the rich sound of her band with a natural self‑evidence. Born in New York, she playfully blends soul, gospel and blues the sounds she grew up with to create her own unique sound, which is a favourite on many stages in this country.

Ein Mann und seine Musik

Was kann man über den Mann schreiben, der schon alles hat? Helge Schneider hat zumindest ein Klavier, ein Saxo‑ und ein Mikrophon und gemäss seiner Web site volles Haar. «Ein Mann und seine Musik» ist die Prämisse seiner aktuellen Arbeit. Wir fragen da gar nicht erst nach, erlauben ihm stattdessen wie im mer, unserem Festival die Abschluss krone aufzusetzen. Wir freuen uns schon jetzt. Gemäss seiner letzten Fernmelde nachricht hat er im vergangenen Jahr mehr als dreizehn neue Akkorde erfun den. Nach Herrn Schneiders letztem Ton ist das Festival offiziell zu Ende und Sie dürfen wieder in Ihr normales Leben zurückkehren. Es war sicher schön.

What can you write about a man who already has everything? Helge Schneider at least has a piano, a saxophone and a microphone and, according to his web site, a full head of hair. “A man and his music” is the premise of his current work. We won’t even ask, but instead allow him to crown our festival as always. We are already looking forward to it. Ac cording to his last remote message, he has invented more than thirteen new chords in the past year. After Mr Schnei der’s last note, the festival is officially over and you can go back to your normal lives. We’re sure, we’ve had a blast.
