ABOUT

Our mission is to be a community catalyst for arts, culture, and education The Festival at Sandpoint is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1982 by a group of local volunteers who wanted to introduce symphonic music to the area and provide an economic boost for their community. The first Festival at Sandpoint took place during the summer of 1983. Since then, the Festival has grown and diversified into a two-week concert series featuring a variety of genres. Outside of the Summer Series, we offer year-round music education programs throughout North Idaho.

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Thank you for joining us for our 43rd season of the Festival at Sandpoint, and welcome back to War Memorial Field. Over the next two weeks, age-old traditions will continue while new memories are made. We’ll experience familiar favorites and discover new ones, all in an incredible venue surrounded by a fantastic community. We are incredibly fortunate to have an event of this caliber right here in our backyard. I'm honored to serve as your Board President for another year. Every summer, I am in awe of our staff, production crew, and volunteers who pull off a massive logistical feat. This season, that energy hits differently as we enter an exciting new chapter, led by a revitalized team focused on honoring our legacy and building our future. Music is a powerful force. Whether you are watching a performance, playing an instrument, or learning a new skill, these experiences expand the mind and bring people together. The Festival at Sandpoint is our anchor, but it isn’t all we do. Year-round, we operate as a nonprofit supporting music education, providing access to instruments, and funding scholarship programs across our region. This vital work happens quietly behind the scenes, and we want to change that, because by shining a light on these programs, we can grow them. To make space for that work, we have thoughtfully renamed the nonprofit entity that produces the Festival at Sandpoint.

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME CONTINUED

Our new name, Selkirk Sound Collective, reflects the full scope of our mission and vision. To be clear, the Festival at Sandpoint remains our flagship event. Differentiating the nonprofit from the concert series we produce allows us to scale our year-round programs that improve access to music. Why this name? The Selkirk Mountains define our region and shape our landscape, and we are deeply rooted here. We believe music sets the stage for a sound community (see what we did there?), and we do it collectively: With our donors, our volunteers, and regional nonprofits. To our donors, your investment supports an organization that's creating opportunities for music to strengthen our community all year long - not only during Festival season. To our volunteers, your time and energy contribute to building something even larger than an event. You're helping strengthen the cultural life of North Idaho. To our sponsors, my fellow board members, and our new leadership team: thank you for pushing us forward. And to you, our attendees: thank you for being the beat of this Festival. Enjoy the music, savor the moments, and let’s celebrate the bright future we are building together. Cheers,

BEN HIGGS PRESIDENT, BOARD OF DIRECTORS

VERONICA KNOWLTON, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS & PROGRAMS

Welcome to The Festival at Sandpoint: 43 years of unforgettable summers, incredible music, and a tradition unlike anywhere else. There is something magical about this place. The stage lights rise, the music begins, the mountains and lake glow behind the stage, and thousands of us gather together to celebrate the power of live music in one of the most beautiful settings in the country. For more than four decades, this Festival has been brought to life by the people of this community; generations of volunteers, sponsors, supporters, artists, partners, staff, board members, and fans who believed that Sandpoint deserved a world-class celebration of music right here at home. What makes the Festival so special is not only what happens on stage, but everything that happens around it. It becomes a place where families make memories, old friends and neighbors reconnect, visitors discover the spirit of our community, and where music continues to inspire generations of young musicians far beyond the stage. Whether this is your 43rd summer with us or your very first night, welcome; we’re so glad you’re here. Take in the view, enjoy the show, and welcome to the Festival at Sandpoint.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER: JOHN POWELL

A native of London, Powell was an accomplished violinist as a child, wrote music for commercials out of school, and assisted composer Patrick Doyle in the early 1990s. He moved to the U.S. in 1997, where he worked on numerous projects for Hans Zimmer and his film music company Remote Control. He cowrote the score for Antz with Harry Gregson-Williams, and quickly became one of the most desirable, versatile, and exciting composers in town. John Powell was catapulted into the realm of A-list composers by displaying an entirely original voice with his oft-referenced scores to the first installment of Matt Damon’s Bourne trilogy, The Bourne Identity from 2002. He has become the go-to writer for family animated films, scoring such hits as Shrek (co-written with Harry Gregson-Williams), Chicken Run (co-written with Harry GregsonWilliams), Ice Age: The Meltdown, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Bolt, Rio, Happy Feet, Happy Feet Two and the two first installments of Kung Fu Panda (co-written with Hans Zimmer). His pulsating action music has provided the fuel for Hancock, Green Zone, Stop Loss, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and The Italian Job. His music has also sweetened the romance of Two Weeks Notice and P.S.: I Love You. In 2006 his music empowered X-Men: The Last Stand, lent tenderness to I Am Sam and gripping, real-time drama to United 93. His infectious score for How to Train Your Dragon earned him his first Academy Award nomination. Powell has also lent his voice to the score of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Ice Age: Continental Drift, Rio 2, directed by Carlos Saldanha, and DreamWorks’ How To Train Your Dragon 2. His work can be found in Warner Bros.’ Pan starring Hugh Jackman, Universal Pictures’ action-thriller Jason Bourne starring Matt Damon and Fox’s Oscar-nominated animated feature Ferdinand. Most recent for Powell was Disney’s highly anticipated Solo: A Star Wars Story, directed by Ron Howard, which gave him the opportunity to collaborate with Maestro John Williams. Most recently, John Powell’s music can be heard in the critically acclaimed final installment of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, directed by Dean DeBlois. In addition to his numerous film scores of all genres, John Powell has also written concert works for choir and orchestra. A selection of these has been released in June of last year with the album "Hubris – Choral Works by John Powell" – including his deeply moving work A Prussian Requiem.

FINE ARTS POSTER

“SHADOW SERENADE” BY CYNDIE HAMMOND

Cyndie’s art piece was selected as the winning Fine Arts Poster from the Festival at Sandpoint’s 2026 Poster Contest. Cyndie’s colored pencil piece is a vibrant representation of the natural beauty of Sandpoint and its surrounding landscape, inspired by her experience and memories of the area’s lakes, rivers, mountains, and forests. “Memories and joy underpin all my pieces, especially this one,” Hammond said. “My work is an invitation to the viewer, a visual feast of exuberant color and light to evoke personal memories, the warm, often forgotten snapshots of happiness, comfort, and celebration.” Each artwork includes two to twenty layers of colored pencil, with the final piece requiring up to 45 hours, depending on the complexity.

“My work is an act of meticulous building, where layers of brilliant color accumulate to form surfaces that pulse with energy and optimism,” Cydnie said. “By pouring this heartfelt intention into every stroke, I hope to connect the viewer to the profound, enduring embrace of joy, not as a fleeting moment, but as a rich, layered, and resonant experience.” Cyndie has kindly donated her original art piece, with auction proceeds supporting the Festival’s nonprofit mission. Place a bid during the Summer Series at the merch booth or by emailing donate@festivalatsandpoint.com. The auction for Cyndie’s original artwork will conclude on August 9 at the end of the Grand Finale. The original art piece will be displayed at the Festival office at 525 Pine Street until July 24, then at the merch booth during the 2026 Summer Series concerts from July 30 through August 9.
