celebrating WHAT A SITE

The Empire Palace Theatre, Nicolson Street

The Festival Theatre stands on Edinburgh’s longest continuous theatre site, dating as far back as 1830, before, most famously, becoming the beloved Empire Palace Theatre in 1892. Over a century of famous acts trod the boards at the Empire - from Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy and Judy Garland, to Morecombe and Wise, David Bowie and Marc Bolan – before it became a Bingo Hall in 1963. OPENING ACT

The Krankies

The Festival Theatre reopened in 1994 (refurbished and rebuilt with a glorious curving glass frontage) for the first ever performance, starring The Krankies. “When we were asked to close the bill at the opening of the Festival Theatre, It was more exciting than our first Royal Variety Show at the London Palladium! We kept thinking of all the great names that had trod the boards of The Empire. We were treading on the same stage as some of the greatest names in past show-business – what an honour.” Ian and Janette Krankie

20 YEARS OF SUCCESS

Her Majesty The Queen on stage, Royal Variety 2003

Over the past two decades, some of the world’s most renowned companies have performed at the Festival Theatre, including Glyndebourne, the RSC and Kirov Ballet, and famous faces have continued to grace the stage. Stars include Luciano Pavarotti, Dame Edna, Sir Roger Moore, Ricky Gervais and even the Queen herself when, in 2003, the Festival Theatre hosted the first ever Royal Variety Performance to be held in Scotland.

CELEBRATING IN STYLE

War Horse

2014 marks the 20th Anniversary of

Edinburgh’s prestigious Festival Theatre

Singin’ in the Rain

We begin and end our 20th Anniversary year in theatrical style: National Theatre’s War Horse kick-starts proceedings with its first, and only, Scottish visit in January, and we welcome Scottish Ballet as this year’s Christmas show with their hotly-anticipated reimagining of Peter Darrell’s The Nutcracker. Expect more thrills along the way, including West End musicals, Singin’ in the Rain and Top Hat, the return of Matthew Bourne’s career-defining Swan Lake, Northern Ballet’s much-lauded A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Scottish Opera’s exquisite Madama Butterfly. “Our annual visit is always a highlight of our tour” Mark Skipper, Chief Executive of Northern Ballet

PUTTING THE ‘FESTIVAL’ IN THEATRE

Sir Sean Connery, Edinburgh International Film Festival 2010

The Festival Theatre operates as Scotland’s largest cinema during Edinburgh International Film Festival, and plays host to Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival and Edinburgh International Festival in the summer. In 2013 a state-of-the-art new Studio space was added, which welcomes festival partners including Imaginate, Puppet Animation Festival and The Fringe, meaning the venue truly deserves its name. “There is always a great atmosphere running through the whole building from front door to stage door.” Alex Reedijk, General Director of Scottish Opera

Thu 30, Fri 31 January & Sun 2 February 2014 Thu 8.30pm | Fri 6.30pm | Sun 4pm British Dance Edition 2014 brings hundreds of dance industry experts to Scotland to see established dance companies join exciting new artists in a programme that captures the diversity and vitality of dance in Britain today. Join us for this rare opportunity to see award-winning talent ahead of national and international tours. iTMOi (in the mind of igor) is Akram Khan’s latest full-length ensemble piece, celebrating the centenary of Stravinsky’s legendary Rite of Spring. With an original score and a cast of 11 dancers, iTMOi creates a world where beauty and ugliness are ruptured to reveal how closely they interrelate with each other. Scottish Dance Theatre presents Jo Strømgren’s dark, Norwegian Winter, Again, shown alongside the soulful hip-hop choreography of The Black Album by Avant Garde Dance. Rounding off this magnificent celebration of dance is Hofesh Shechter Company with Sun, where dancing bright light emerges from an emotive and often angry world, followed by a short film and solo performance from Casson & Friends.

Tue 18 to Sat 22 February 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm Frederick Knott’s intense and darkly gripping thriller, Dial M for Murder, famously filmed by Alfred Hitchcock, is given new life in this stunning production, starring Christopher Timothy (All Creatures Great and Small) as Inspector Hubbard. Tony is convinced his wife is having an affair. We watch mesmerised at Tony’s precision in planning what must surely be the perfect murder… until it falters in the most unexpected way. Claustrophobic and frightening, Lucy Bailey’s exciting new production reclaims this brilliant and erotic tale of betrayal, passion and ultimately, murder. Hot off the heels of her brilliant reimagining of The Winter’s Tale for The Royal Shakespeare Company, Lucy Bailey returns to Edinburgh with this gripping thriller.

Tue 18, Thu 20 & Sat 22 February 2014 Evenings 7.15pm Don Pasquale, a reclusive old man with a penchant for cats, runs a crumbling pensione with only a chain-smoking chambermaid, a greasy cook and an ancient porter for company. Determined to keep his wealth from his scheming nephew, Pasquale searches for a wife. But when he finds one, being married isn’t quite as straightforward as he expected… Set in Rome at the cusp of the swinging sixties, it’s the perfect setting for a titanic clash of the generations. Director Renaud Doucet and designer André Barbe (Manon 2009) bring Donizetti’s quick-witted, comic masterpiece to life with their typically colourful and quirky style. Evenings 7.15pm Dominic Hill, Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre, revives his brooding, atmospheric Macbeth in celebration of the 2014 Year of Homecoming. Inspired by events in the war-torn Balkans, Hill’s production is at once contemporary and ageless; a world of camouflage-clad leaders and grungy, chainsmoking witches, where power is all, but it comes at a price. Unsettling and full of tension, the drama of Shakespeare’s play is underlined by the brilliance of Verdi’s score, here performed by chamber orchestra. Desperate and furious, at times ethereal and visionary, Verdi’s music becomes even more immediate in this intimate setting, the tragedy even more intense.

Tue, Thu & Sat 7.15pm | Matinee Sun 4pm Classic, timeless and stylish, Sir David McVicar’s Madama Butterfly has been a firm favourite since it was first staged in 2000. Forgoing sentimentality to create a rich cast of characters with unflinchingly human characteristics, his production lays bare a hugely atmospheric, poignant story that still has the power to affect, over a century after it was first performed. Puccini’s sense of drama is second to none and Butterfly sees him doing what he does best – painting beautifully exotic pictures in sound that are dramatic, often hauntingly lyrical, and full of emotion. .........................................................................................................

The Story of Abelard and Heloise Tue 18 to Sat 22 March 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm The same creative team who brought us the vivid and vibrant Anne Boleyn in 2012 now offer a real treat with their next spellbinding tale. When Abelard begins a wild affair with his brilliant student Heloise, his enemies find the perfect pretext to destroy him. Abelard is already on thin ice with the church over his contentious views and when Heloise bears his child out of wedlock, their affair becomes the scandal of the age. With its dynamic, contemporary language, stunning costumes and terrific live music, fiery philosophical debate and history burst into life in this energetic, visceral and above all highly entertaining production. Previously titled In Extremis and following a triumphant season at Shakespeare’s Globe, audiences outside of London now get the chance to revel in this funny, passionate and legendary love story.

Mon 24 to Sat 29 March 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm A quintessential English country estate is thrown into chaos following the murder of eccentric inventor Sir Claud Amory, and the theft of his new earth-shattering formula. Arriving at the estate just moments too late, one man immediately senses a potent brew of despair, treachery, and deception amid the estate’s occupants. That man is Hercule Poirot. In the first play ever written by Agatha Christie we are introduced to a character who went on to become the most famous detective of all time, and the only fictional character ever to receive a full-page obituary in The New York Times. Robert Powell is one of the country’s best loved actors. Having received multiple awards and a BAFTA nomination for his portrayal of Jesus in Franco Zefferelli’s Jesus of Nazareth, he went on to star in numerous film hits including The Thirty Nine Steps, Four Feathers and Shaka Zulu, and also featured in several TV series including The Detectives and Holby City. His extensive stage performances include roles in the national tours of Alan Bennett’s Single Spies and Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell before most recently appearing in Singing’ in the Rain in the West End.

Featuring rousing live music including Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and Jerusalem, Brassed Off is a funny and heartwarming drama that reaches stirring heights as local Dalkeith and Monktonhall Brass Band performs the final scene, set in the Royal Albert Hall, live on stage at the King’s. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike of 1984, this production is directed by Damian Cruden (director of Olivier Award-winning The Railway Children), and starring John McArdle (Brookside).

Wed 7 to Sat 10 May 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Thu & Sat 2.30pm What happens when the rock and roll of swinging sixties London collides with the rock and moss of remote Scotland? Sandy Sheridan, pretentious art critic and self-proclaimed cultural icon, returns from London to his Scottish country pile – with his new, much younger, wife in tow. Waiting for him are his stoical daughter Shona and his acerbic ex-brother-in-law, Uncle Varick. John Byrne, acclaimed author of The Slab Boys Trilogy and Tutti Frutti, and iconic Scottish painter (whose works include the domed ceiling of the King’s Theatre), relocates Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece Uncle Vanya to 1960’s rural Scotland in a play full of comedy, pathos, jealously, lust and some very dodgy chainsaws. Edinburgh theatre favourite Jimmy Chisholm (Para Handy, Take the High Road) leads a cast of great Scottish performers. Set against a sensational sixties soundtrack, arranged and performed by Dave “Wildcat” Anderson, Uncle Varick is a great comedy and a great night out.

HHHHH “Breathtaking – a triumph” Sunday Herald Wed 21 to Sat 24 May 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinee Sat 2pm Scottish Ballet returns with a powerful reinterpretation of an alltime classic. Incredibly moving and enduringly relevant, this unique version of Romeo & Juliet was created for Scottish Ballet by Polish choreographer Krysztof Pastor in 2008, and has since gained status as one of the company’s most iconic works. Set in the 20th century, this passionate story of forbidden love unfolds in three dramatic acts. Beginning in a 1930s monochrome Italian metropolis, Pastor shows a world torn apart by conflict in which Romeo and Juliet meet and fall deeply in love. The second act moves to the sepia-toned 1950s in the wake of Mussolini’s Fascist dictatorship, Romeo and Juliet have to hide their forbidden love. Finally, the third act is dominated by the eerie blue light of television cameras that report 24/7 from the frontline of global wars and the secret couple go to dramatic lengths to keep their love eternal. The dancers of Scottish Ballet – for whom the piece was created – bring these iconic roles to life with emotional intensity and breathtaking performances. Romeo & Juliet is set to the worldfamous Prokofiev score – performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.

Going for Gold explores young peoples’ motivation to be the best that they can be.

Wednesday Addams, ultimate princess of darkness, has fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family.

Almost every talented youngster at Pilrig Park school has contributed to the show, working in an area of the arts which interests them; the choreography, costumes and sets are all put together by pupils and teachers. This is an uplifting, and often moving night at the theatre which will make you proud to support this very special local school.

Wednesday confides in her father, begging him not to tell her mother. Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before: keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything changes for the family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents.

Tue 30 September to Sat 4 October 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm Marking the centenary of the First World War, this new dramatisation of Pat Barker’s unforgettable Booker-nominated novel is adapted by Olivier Award-winning playwright Nicholas Wright (His Dark Materials, Vincent in Brixton). Craiglockhart War Hospital, Edinburgh 1917. Poet and soldier Siegfried Sassoon has been institutionalised in an attempt to undermine his public disapproval of the war. His Army Psychiatrist, Dr William Rivers has been tasked with returning shell-shocked officers to the trenches, yet under Sassoon’s influence, has become tormented by the morality of what is being done in the name of medicine. Reminding us that some of the most touching of friendships are borne from the most brutal of conflicts, Regeneration is a compassionate look at war and its devastating effects.

A very special gift...

Help future generations to share your love of theatre with a Gift in your Will. The Festival & King’s Theatres are a hugely important part of Edinburgh’s cultural life, bringing world-class talent to the city throughout the year. But did you know we’re a registered charity? Over 10,000 people a year take part in our learning and outreach programmes, and we help thousands of children who wouldn’t usually have access to the arts, to experience the magic of theatre for the very first time.

If you have happy memories of our theatres, please consider remembering us in your Will and make a lasting contribution to the future of your local independent theatres and the people who will enjoy them. For an informal chat about leaving a legacy, please call Lucy Clement on 0131 622 8087

“ The Festival Theatre has played a central role in bringing Scottish Ballet’s work to the people of Edinburgh, and beyond, over the last 20 years.

An incredible stage to perform on, its scale has allowed us to present an ambitious breadth of repertoire – whether that be cutting-edge contemporary work or the full spectacle of a story ballet for audiences of all ages. We are delighted to return to the Festival Theatre in 2014 with a lovingly recreated production of Peter Darrell’s The Nutcracker, in the same city where the magic began all those years ago. ” Cindy Sughrue, Scottish Ballet’s Chief Executive and Executive Producer

celebrating

love dance Sat 13 December 2014 to Sat 3 January 2015 Let Scottish Ballet take you on journey into Clara’s magical dream world; to the Land of Ice and Snow, where snowflakes come to life, and to the magical Kingdom of Sweets - the enchanted Realm of the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy. Crafted for Scotland by the company’s founding Artistic Director, Peter Darrell, a famous story-teller and an incredible dancemaker, this Nutcracker is full of magical memories. Now, over 40 years since it first premiered, this classic production has been lovingly reimagined by Olivier Award-winning designer Lez Brotherston; adding sumptuous layers of plush Victoriana and traditional festive fare, so audiences can share this dreammaking production with families and friends once more.
