Ferrum College celebrated its 109th commencement on Saturday, May 3, 2025, under partly sunny skies in Hart International Plaza as 154 graduates representing seven countries, thirteen states, and 69 Virginia localities received their diplomas. The ceremony began with the singing of the National Anthem by Emily Blankenship-Tucker, Rachel BlankenshipTucker, and Emily Walker ’25. Senior Class President Makaila Veney ’25 spoke about the lasting impact Ferrum College will have on her and her classmates. The keynote address was delivered by Ferrum College alumnus Billy Wagner ’94, who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in July 2025. Wagner told the seniors, “Ferrum has always been about more than just academics. It’s about values. It’s about grit. It’s about community. It’s about becoming the kind of person who makes a difference… This place has prepared you for more than just a job; it has prepared you for life.”

Following his address, President Mirta Martin presented Wagner with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree for his lifetime of excellence and service.

Dear Panther Family,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is my privilege to share this year’s Impact Report with you. This publication highlights Ferrum College’s achievements over the past two years, spanning the 2024 and 2025 fiscal years, and demonstrates how the current momentum of Ferrum Rising builds upon the foundation of work, dedication, and progress from these years.

This past year has been nothing short of extraordinary for Ferrum College. Together, we have experienced a season of milestones that reflect not just progress, but transformation. With the continued generosity of alumni and friends, our transition to NCAA Division II Athletics, and the arrival of the largest incoming class since 2018, Ferrum Rising has taken root.

Within these pages, you will discover the many ways Ferrum College is living out its mission and shaping lives for the better. This has been a remarkable year in the life of the College. We have witnessed milestones that speak to the strength of our community and the momentum of Ferrum Rising. As a first-generation college student, Grace Weaver ’27, often reminds others, “It is a privilege to be here. Not everyone gets this opportunity.”

Grace knows about making the most of her opportunities. She is a recipient of the Hart Presidential Scholarship, a “merit-based award for undergraduate students of superior academic and leadership ability.” This scholarship not only covers her tuition, enabling her to pursue a four-year degree in the first place, but it also motivates her to take full advantage of her Ferrum experience.

This past summer, she received the Richard L. Smith Academic Enrichment Award and studied abroad in Seville, Spain. She competed in her first triathlon at Smith Mountain Lake, placing third in her age group. And Grace is a

member of the Honors Program, serving on the Honors Advisory Committee and mentoring other students.

As an assistant editor of the school newspaper, The Iron Blade, she won a national award for her story “Considering Chemo.” This year, Grace is assuming even more responsibility as the paper’s EditorIn-Chief.

A psychology major, Grace says she “wants to make a difference in a special way.” Her achievements at Ferrum, along with her determination and positive spirit, will equip her with the skills and resilience to lead a meaningful life.

The Ramos-Mendoza Siblings Find Family, Purpose, and Home begins with a Starbucks stop — “right in the middle of campus!” she laughs — before psychology lectures and sorority activities.

“It’s so easy to get around,” she added.

“Even if I wake up a little late, I know I won’t be far from class.”

Mentors and Moments Both siblings credit mentors who have shaped their Ferrum journey. Angel points to Coach Adams and the head of the Health and Human Performance Department, for guiding his academic path. Naomi’s list includes faculty and the Career Services Director, who helped her secure a teaching internship at Smith Mountain Lake.

When Angel and Naomi Ramos-Mendoza walk across Ferrum College’s green campus, they carry with them more than books and coffee cups. They carry a shared story as first generation college students — one of family, faith, and finding belonging in a place that feels like home.

Angel, a student-athlete and health and human performance major, arrived first. His positive experience laid the foundation for his younger sister, Naomi, to join him a year later.

What convinced her to trade her initial plans at a larger university for Ferrum? A conversation with President Dr. Mirta Martin.

“My dad had mentioned to Dr. Martin that I was heading to VCU,” Naomi recalled. “She said, ‘I’d love to have her here — her and her brother together.’

She even offered to create a psychology plan just for me. That really showed me how personal Ferrum is.”

That sense of individual care defines both siblings’ experiences. Angel describes Ferrum as “a second family,” a phrase that surfaces often as he talks

about his professors, teammates, and the college community. “Our athletic director, Coach Cleve Adams, is like a second father,” he said. “He texts every student on their birthday. If you have a family issue, he’s there.”

For Naomi, Ferrum’s closeness eased her fears about college. “At a big school, I worried I’d get lost in the crowd,” she said. “Here, my professors know me. If I need help, I can email or just walk up to them. Dr. Abigail Jamison, my advisor, makes every class feel like home.”

But above all, both siblings agree — President Martin’s leadership changed their lives. “She’s the reason I’m here,” Naomi said. “When I was struggling, she made me feel like I was her first priority.”

Looking Ahead First-generation college students, Angel and Naomi are the pride of their parents, who both immigrated (Dad is from Mexico and Mom from Honduras) with big dreams of a better life — which they have found for their children at Ferrum. Angel dreams of becoming a physical therapist, while Naomi plans to earn her master’s in forensic psychology.

A Day in the Life

“When my dad talks to his friends, he says, ‘Some didn’t believe in her — but look at her now,’” Naomi said with a smile.

For both Angel and Naomi, their “perfect Ferrum day” starts early. Angel’s version includes breakfast with friends, small classes, time in the library, and workouts in the fitness center. Naomi’s routine

How SGA Leaders Hannah Huffman and E.J. McArthur Found Their Voices When Hannah Huffman and E.J. McArthur arrived at Ferrum College, neither could have imagined how much the campus would come to feel like home — or how deeply they would shape its community through student leadership. Both studentathletes, both driven to make an impact, their journeys through Ferrum’s Student Government Association (SGA) have helped define not only their college experience, but also their personal growth.

For Huffman, a native of Riner, Virginia, basketball first brought her to Ferrum.

“The first time I was on campus, the whole atmosphere just felt right,” she recalls. After earning her bachelor’s in history, she’s now completing a master’s in psychology. McArthur, from Fayetteville, North Carolina, shares a similar story. “I had no idea what Ferrum was until I came for a visit. As soon as I stepped on campus, I fell in love — the people were super friendly, and it just felt like home.”

The two bonded as student assistants in the Office of the Dean of Students and later as leaders within SGA — Huffman now serving as SGA president and McArthur as Senior Class president. “I joined SGA because a friend encouraged me,” Huffman explains. “It pushed me out of my comfort zone. Now I can stand in front of the whole student body and speak

with confidence.” McArthur’s path was more unexpected: “I was basically told I was the perfect person for the job,” he laughs. “But I realized it was a chance to be the bridge between students and administration — to be a voice for others.”

Together, they helped plan Ferrum’s first homecoming as a Division II school, organized Connection Weekend for incoming freshmen, and strengthened ties between students and faculty.

Both credit Dean of Students Jill Adams and President Mirta Martin as mentors who have profoundly influenced their growth. “Dean Adams is like a second mom,” says McArthur. “She’s taught us how to lead with compassion.”

Huffman adds, “She’s amazing — always supporting us and pushing us toward new opportunities.”

It is through the generosity of donors who believe in the mission of Ferrum College that students like Hannah and E.J. are able to access these transformative opportunities. Their scholarships and financial support allow exceptional students to pursue their education, develop leadership skills, and prepare to make a meaningful impact on the world.

As they look ahead, both envision bright futures — Huffman pursuing a career as a behavioral analyst, McArthur preparing for law school — but their hearts remain rooted at Ferrum. “This place,” McArthur says, “will always be home.” n

Dr. Mirta M. Martin was named Ferrum College’s 13th president on October 27, 2023, and was inaugurated on May 4, 2024, during the 108th commencement ceremony.

As a result of her care, leadership, and vision, Ferrum College has seen great accomplishments throughout the past couple of years. Following are questions we asked President Martin about her time at Ferrum and what she sees for the College’s future.

What lessons have you learned throughout your career that you find valuable?

Doing the right thing is difficult; however, for me, it is the only path forward. Helping others become their best self is an essential attribute of leadership. We must be “active participants in life’s journey and not silent observers.”

What do you see in Ferrum College students that mirrors your own experience as a young girl?

EVERYTHING! Our students come from a myriad of backgrounds. They want to make a difference in the world, and they are willing to “roll up their sleeves” to help others and to transform their world.

I too dreamed of helping others; of transforming the world.

Someone gave me that opportunity by writing a check which I attached to my application to Duke University. That selfless act launched my life’s journey. I want to give our students that opportunity — so they can begin their life’s journey — and perhaps, they may find a way to fix what ails our world or find peace in the world. In short, I want to let them know I believe in them, and I want to make sure they have the education — a Ferrum College education — so they can transform our world.

I have no doubt they will!

What advice would you give to students for their journey at Ferrum College?

I ask them to begin their exciting journey in pursuit of committing to attend — and graduate — from College.

Therefore, my advice is: • First — Fully embrace the journey before you. You are not alone. Surround yourself with individuals who will encourage you, who will believe in you, who will guide you through the labyrinth of higher education.

Ferrum College moved to NCAA Division II, Provisional Year 1, effective July 1, 2025. What does this journey to Division II Athletics mean for Ferrum?

Ferrum College’s transition into NCAA Division II marks a transformative new chapter in our history — one that strengthens our commitment to excellence and expands opportunities for our student-athletes. This journey elevates the level of competition, enhances the student-athlete experience, and reinforces our reputation for determination, integrity, and grit.

Moving into Division II means more than competing at a higher level — it’s about fostering holistic growth. It reflects our dedication to helping student-athletes excel academically, athletically, and personally while building pride across our campus and community. Ferrum College is ready to grow, to invest in our students, and to prepare them to compete — and to lead — in both athletics and life.

What does a successful journey for Ferrum College into the future look like to you?

A successful journey for Ferrum College would mean seeing a thriving, dynamic campus that attracts and empowers students from diverse backgrounds, equipping them with the skills and resilience needed to lead meaningful lives.

Underpinning this vision for Ferrum College’s future is the indispensable role of our faculty and staff. They are the heart and soul of our institution, shaping the experiences that empower our students to grow and thrive.

Finally, a successful future for Ferrum College would mean being financially strong, ethically grounded, and unwavering in our commitment to creating a positive impact in the lives of our students, our community, and beyond. n

FACULTY MAKE A LASTING IMPACT

Dr. Nancy M. Brubaker, DVM ’94 Associate Professor of Animal Science

Emily Blankenship-Tucker, MFA IA Director of Appalachian Music, Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator of Music and Theatre

As a first-generation student with limited financial resources, Nancy M. Brubaker’s dream of studying veterinary medicine seemed just out of reach. Yet her academic excellence soon opened doors — beginning her sophomore year, Dr. Brubaker earned scholarships made possible through the generosity of donors who believed in her potential.

What started as a love for storytelling and song for Emily Blankenship-Tucker soon evolved into a calling — to teach, to mentor, and to carry forward the spirit of Appalachian music and theatre.

She graduated magna cum laude in Chemistry & Pre-Professional Health. And in 1999, she became one of Ferrum College’s proudest firsts among the graduates to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Today, she is not only a practicing veterinarian, but also a beloved Associate Professor of Animal Science at her alma mater.

Today, as Director of Appalachian Music and Program Coordinator of Music and Theatre at Ferrum College, Blankenship-Tucker blends artistry with mission. She teaches courses in music, theatre, creative drama, and social dance, while leading the Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre, the Jack Tale Players, and Orchestra Appalachia.

For more than a decade, Dr. Brubaker has poured her heart into Ferrum College students. She has designed and launched new majors and minors in Agricultural Sciences, Equine Studies, Equine Science, and the groundbreaking One Health program — programs that have elevated Ferrum College’s academic profile and attracted students from across the region.

Chair, Ferrum College Nursing Division When Dr. Melody Sharp first set foot on the Ferrum College campus, she brought more than three decades of experience as a nurse, educator, and leader. She brought a deep sense of calling. To her, nursing is not simply a profession; it is a sacred trust. It is the intersection of science, compassion, and service where skill meets purpose and communities are healed.

As Chair of Ferrum College’s Nursing Division, Dr. Sharp leads with conviction and clarity, weaving her extensive background in clinical practice, education, and accreditation into a program that prepares students to lead, serve, and care.

Under her leadership, the Nursing Division achieved Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accreditation — in record time — positioning Ferrum College among the most respected and fastest-growing programs in the region.

Faculty Emeritus, Professor of Biology and Agriculture Professor Emeritus Bob Pohlad, an accomplished photographer, traveled to Botswana and South Africa last spring with former Ferrum College colleagues John and Lynda Leffler, and Mike and Kathy Mengak. During the adventure, he captured more than 8,000 striking images of wildlife, plants, campsites, sunsets, and fellow travelers. The safari experience included tent camping close to wildlife and other excursions across the region.

After retiring from a 41-year teaching career at Ferrum College, Dr. Pohlad continues to find ways to educate and share with students and the broader Ferrum community. He conducted sessions on campus, including a science seminar in August, during which he shared his safari photos and experiences.

“Photography has allowed me to capture moments that inspire curiosity, wonder, and respect for the natural world,” Dr. Pohlad said. “Sharing these experiences is a joy, and I enjoy bringing a bit of the Kalahari to Ferrum College.”

Ferrum College President Mirta Martin commented, “We are excited for Dr. Pohlad to share his incredible safari experiences with our campus community. Events like this showcase the unique ways Ferrum College connects our students and community to the broader world of science and exploration.”

Dr. Pohlad also serves as senior scientist for the Smith Mountain Lake Water Quality Project, working closely with Ferrum College environmental science students.

Bri Bitz’s Ferrum Journey

When you meet Bri Bitz ’94, it’s hard not to be inspired by her drive, resilience, and deep love for Ferrum College. A native of Ridgeway, Virginia — just 40 minutes from campus — Bitz has built her story on grit, faith, and an unshakable sense of purpose. From overcoming major injuries to mentoring the next generation of Panthers, her path reflects everything Ferrum stands for: perseverance, community, and heart.

Bitz’s road to Ferrum wasn’t a straight line.

After high school, she played Division I soccer at George Mason University and UNC Asheville, but a serious hip injury during her junior year changed everything. “I thought I was going to medically retire,” she recalls. “But I realized I wasn’t ready to give up the sport I loved.”

That realization brought her home to Ferrum College. “The coaches here had known me since I was a kid,” she says. “When I called, they welcomed me with open arms.” Following hip surgery and months of recovery, Bitz found herself not just playing again, but thriving. “I fell in love with Ferrum — not just the soccer program, but the president, the professors, the athletic director, the whole environment.

It’s special here.”

Her academic success mirrors her determination on the field. After struggling to find her footing at larger universities, Bitz excelled at Ferrum’s smaller, more personal setting. “At bigger schools, I had to go through teaching assistants for help,” she explains.

“Here, professors answer my emails at 11 p.m. They care about you as a person.”

Today, Bitz balances a packed schedule, working on campus for the Institutional Advancement Department, volunteering as an assistant coach for the women’s soccer team, and managing her online graduate studies — all while planning her upcoming wedding. Her fiancé, a former Hampden-Sydney baseball player now serving in the military, continues to be one of her biggest supporters. “He came to see my All-American photo on the wall before he left for deployment,” she says with a smile. “That meant the world to me.”

Bitz credits much of her growth to the mentors she’s found at Ferrum — especially head women’s soccer coach Erin Saleeby.

“Coach Saleeby believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself,” she says. “She’s the reason I want to coach someday. Watching her lead with compassion and strength, especially as a woman in a male-dominated field, has been life-changing.”

When asked what she tells high school recruits, Bitz’s answer is simple: “At Ferrum, you’re never just a number.

You’re a person people believe in. They want you to succeed academically, athletically, and personally. That kind of support changes everything.”

I have fallen in love with this place. I’m going to work with the women’s soccer team and stay here — taking everything that I’ve learned here and applying it to people who are trying to learn and grow in the same place that I thrived.”

Achievements like Bitz’s — in the classroom, on the field, and beyond — are made possible through the continued generosity of those who believe and invest in Ferrum College’s mission and future. It is the faith and commitment of our donors that allow students like Bitz to pursue excellence, discover their purpose, and become leaders who uplift others. n

Looking ahead, Bitz hopes to stay right where she is. “Honestly, in five years, I hope to be where I am [at Ferrum College].

Achieving Success at Ferrum College Tripoom (TJ) Jala ‘25 sought a college home that would keep him grounded and provide the structure he felt he needed to be successful. Jala found this at Ferrum College and, thanks to our loyal donors, was able to attend because of scholarships and financial aid. He chose Ferrum because of the care he felt from the president, his coaches, faculty, staff, and peers, as well as the financial assistance that allowed him to get on his feet and achieve the success he desired.

As a member of Scout Platoon 1-116th VANG in the Virginia Army National Guard, Jala also found the support he needed at Ferrum to balance course requirements with his military service, while continuing to advance his tennis career on the courts with the Ferrum College Men’s Tennis Team.

From the moment he arrived, Jala discovered more than a college — he found a family. Even while managing the demands of his military duties, he knew there was always someone at Ferrum ready to help him stay on track. “Even when I only had occasional weekend

access to my phone, there was always someone at Ferrum willing to help,” he shared.

Whether it was the supportive coaches, the caring staff at Stanley Library, who welcomed him as one of their own, or classmates who became lifelong friends, Jala found in Ferrum a place where people look out for one another.

“They took me in and gave me a place to study, work, and learn,” he said.

Jala believes the scholarships and financial aid he received gave him the opportunity to pursue his dreams — to double major in Political Science and Financial Management, minor in History, and complete an internship in Washington, D.C., with U.S. Representative Nancy Mace.

Fluent in both English and Thai, Jala hopes to serve as a Foreign Service Officer, helping advance U.S. diplomacy and international cooperation.

Reflecting on his time at Ferrum, he says, “This place teaches you to care for others — to live out the motto, ”Not Self, But Others”. Ferrum isn’t just a college.

Cleive Adams:

Leading Ferrum College on the Journey to NCAA Division II

Since arriving at Ferrum College, Coach Cleive Adams has been at the heart of a transformative era in Panther athletics.

As Director of Athletics, Adams has guided the College through its ambitious transition from NCAA Division III to Division II, a move that represents far more than a change in classification. For Ferrum College, it is a competitive advantage — a chance to recruit Virginia’s top student-athletes, provide a higher level of competition, and elevate the overall studentathlete experience. Under Adams’ leadership, the Panthers are not just participating — they are positioning themselves to compete with excellence, taking the black and gold into new arenas while upholding the College’s core values.

The journey to Division II began with a vision from President Mirta Martin. Barely three months into her presidency, she recognized that Ferrum College’s student-athletes deserved the opportunity to compete at a higher level — and that the College needed a strategic differentiation to gain a recruiting edge. Within six months, and with Board approval, she engaged consultants to explore the feasibility of moving to Division II. Her goal was clear: to provide student-athletes with a true home — a place where they could compete fiercely, yet still belong.

By December, President Martin formally turned the initiative — later known as #TheJourney — over to Coach Adams, who presented findings and strategy before the Board in February 2024. Two months later, Conference Carolinas extended an invitation, and by October all NCAA paperwork had been submitted — a major milestone in Ferrum’s accelerated pathway. This proactive approach allowed coaches to begin Division II recruiting immediately. On February 12, 2025, Ferrum College received official notice of acceptance into NCAA Division II, with Provisional Year One competition set to begin in August 2025.

Adams brings both experience and heart to his leadership.

A proud Ferrum alumnus and Hall of Famer, he bleeds black and gold. His loyalty, integrity, and faith guide his work every day. “Ferrum College is more than a College; it’s home,” Adams says. “Our move to Division II allows us to challenge our student-athletes, attract top talent back to Virginia, and give them opportunities to compete, grow, and lead at the highest levels.”

Under Adams’ leadership, Ferrum College is now recruiting athletes from across the United States and even internationally — expanding the College’s reach and reputation. This growth has coincided with rising student-athlete GPAs, reflecting Adams’ holistic approach: success in the classroom is just as important as success on the field. His “student-first” philosophy has inspired a renewed sense of pride among athletes, coaches, and the wider campus community, uniting them around shared goals of character, scholarship, and competition.

Through his signature 3 WINS motto — Win in Life, Win in the Classroom, Win on the Field — Adams has instilled a culture of holistic excellence that defines Ferrum athletics. His attention to detail and personal investment in his players are legendary, from mentoring students to remembering every athlete’s birthday.

He has built a strong coaching staff, added new programs such as Ferrum’s first women’s flag football team, and prioritized compliance, accountability, and ethical leadership. Adams also works closely with alumni, donors, and community partners to enhance resources, fund scholarships, and improve facilities — investments that attract top talent and ensure the program’s continued success.

Ferrum College’s transition to NCAA Division II is already producing results: heightened competition, national recruiting success, and record academic achievement. HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

KEVIN SHERMAN ‘92: LEADING FERRUM FOOTBALL WITH HEART, HONOR, AND VISION When Kevin Sherman heard the call back home, the black and gold of Ferrum beckoned him to lead a football team and a new generation. He came to build more than wins — he came to build character, resilience, and leaders who lead with heart and integrity. Since returning in 2024, Sherman has begun shaping a new era for Ferrum football. In his first season, the Panthers posted a 5-5 record — the most wins since 2018 — and seven players earned All-Conference honors. Yet for Sherman, true success lies in his student-athletes’ growth on and off the field, as they learn to carry themselves with courage, discipline, and purpose.

A proud member of the Class of 1992, Sherman played four seasons under legendary Coach Hank Norton, serving as team captain, earning MVP honors, and receiving Ferrum’s Big Green Award. Inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, he returned to coach and mentor — sharing the lessons he learned at Ferrum and helping others discover their potential, lead with integrity, and embrace responsibility.

Sherman brings more than 30 years of collegiate coaching experience, including stints at Virginia Tech, Purdue, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo, with 11 bowl games and four BCS appearances.

His expertise is remarkable, but it’s his heart and dedication to his players that set him apart. He answers every call to serve, leading by example and demonstrates leadership rooted in humility, generosity, and commitment. Each practice, meeting, and moment is an opportunity to teach perseverance and the value of giving back.

“Every day I step on this campus, I’m reminded that we’re not just building athletes — we’re building men of character who will lead with honor in every part of their lives. I want every student-athlete to leave here knowing that their time at Ferrum has prepared them to serve, give back, and chase excellence in everything they do.”

HEAD BASEBALL COACH

ERIC OWENS ’93: COMING HOME TO LEAD THE PANTHERS When Eric Owens returned to Ferrum College in 2024 as Head Baseball Coach, it was a career move and a homecoming. For Owens, a Ferrum College All-American, NCAA Division III Player of the Year, and former Major League Baseball standout, the call of the black and gold was impossible to ignore.

“Ferrum College isn’t just where I played baseball,” Owens shared. “It’s where I learned discipline, resilience, and what it means to be part of something bigger than yourself. Coming back feels like coming full circle.”

Owens’s career has been defined by excellence. A star Panther from 1989 to 1992, he was a two-time All-American and remains Ferrum’s only NCAA Player of the Year. He led the team to three straight NCAA playoff appearances and still holds seven school records, including a .430 career batting average, 68 stolen bases, and 18 triples.

Drafted in the fourth round of the 1992 MLB Amateur Draft by the Cincinnati Reds, Owens played 806 Major League games with five teams — the Reds, Brewers, Padres, Marlins, and Angels. His time in the majors shaped his passion for mentoring the next generation.

After retiring as a player, Owens moved into coaching, bringing his expertise from A-Ball to the Major Leagues. As Assistant Hitting Coach with the Toronto Blue Jays, he helped lead the team to back-to-back American League Championship appearances. Despite his success, Owens’s heart remained in Ferrum. Returning was about more than baseball — it was about legacy. “This is where I learned to believe in myself,” he said. “Now I want to help our players do the same — to show them Ferrum College can be the foundation for any dream.”

Now leading the Panthers into a new era in NCAA Division II and Conference Carolinas, Owens is building a program rooted in hard work, humility, and heart.

When Alexis Anderson joined Ferrum College as Deputy Director of Athletics, she brought heart, faith, and a deep commitment to student-athletes. Her leadership has been key to Ferrum’s transition into NCAA Division II and Conference Carolinas, ensuring that compliance, integrity, and purpose remain central to every Panther victory.

When Garrett Roth joined Ferrum College in November 2024 as Head Women’s Flag Football Coach, he wasn’t just taking a job — he was answering a calling. He now leads Ferrum’s first-ever women’s flag football team — a historic program in Virginia and a trailblazer in NCAA Division II athletics. “Ferrum College has an energy and mission that drew me here,” Roth says. “I want to help our student-athletes build confidence, discipline, and leadership while experiencing the joy of competition.”

Anderson combines professionalism with compassion, managing complex compliance and governance while never losing sight of the people behind the policies. “Athletics teaches lessons that last a lifetime,” she says. “Teamwork, accountability, and perseverance — these are the same qualities our students will carry into their lives, their families, and their communities. At Ferrum College, we want every student-athlete to win both on and off the field.”

In April 2025, Anderson also became Senior Woman Administrator, expanding her influence across all programs.

She mentors coaches, advises administrators, and advocates for student-athletes while fostering a culture of respect and service. As advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, she ensures that athletics reflects the College’s mission. Under her guidance, student-athletes have led food drives, supported local schools, and volunteered across the region.

Her faith-filled leadership has earned national recognition, including the Division II Rising Star Award and selection for the 2025 NCAA Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute — one of the most prestigious professional development opportunities in collegiate athletics. Yet for Anderson, success is measured not by accolades but by student growth. “When I see our athletes step up as leaders — in class, on the field, and in their communities — that’s what inspires me,” she says.

The ability to attract leaders like Anderson is made possible by the generosity of our donors — ensuring that Ferrum athletics continues to shine as a place where competition meets character, and every Panther is encouraged to lead and serve.

Before Ferrum, Roth founded the girls flag football program at Cordova High School in California, building it from the ground up. He also worked as an advanced statistician with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, developing a data-driven understanding of strategy and performance.

Since arriving, Roth has assembled a talented 27-player roster representing states from California to Virginia. The team will compete in Conference Carolinas, the first NCAA Division II league to sponsor a women’s flag football championship. The inaugural event will take place April 17–19, 2026, in Durham, North Carolina — a milestone for both Ferrum and the sport.

With women’s flag football becoming an Olympic sport in 2028, several of Roth’s recruits are already training with Olympic aspirations. “President Martin told me she wanted an Olympian,” Roth recalls. “Now Ferrum College is on a path to making that dream a reality.”

Roth is a visible presence on campus, mentoring studentathletes and modeling Ferrum’s motto: ”Not Self, But Others” Whether leading practice or offering encouragement between classes, he exemplifies leadership, service, and character.

A Colorado State University honor graduate with a degree in Journalism and Media Communication, Roth brings academic discipline and sportsmanship to his role.

With Roth at the helm, Ferrum’s women’s flag football team is not only competing — it’s pioneering. Supported by the College’s vision and donor generosity, Roth is creating opportunities for student-athletes to grow, lead, and carry the black and gold with pride.

A Life of Generosity, Leadership, and Lasting Impact When Ed George ’67 first laced up his cleats on the Ferrum College football field, he could not have imagined how profoundly the lessons learned there — discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and faith — would shape the course of his life. Decades later, as he stood surrounded by friends, family, and admirers celebrating his 2025 induction into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, those same values were evident in every tribute spoken in his honor.

His leadership is steady, his words measured, and his actions always rooted in sincerity and generosity. He gives not for recognition, but from the simple conviction that doing good matters.

Billy Wagner ’94: From Ferrum Panther to Baseball Legend, a Life of Excellence, Faith, and Service

On July 26, 2025, William “Billy” Edward Wagner was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, an honor that marks the pinnacle of a life defined by perseverance, dedication, and unwavering character.

For Ferrum College, this moment is more than a celebration of athletic achievement — it is a reflection of the values that shape our students: integrity, faith, leadership, and a commitment to our motto, ”Not Self, But Others”.

illy’s story begins in the small Virginia community of Tannersville, where he learned early that challenges can be transformed into opportunity. Twice breaking his right arm as a child, he taught himself to throw left-handed, a testament to his resilience and determination.

“Were it not for Ferrum College, I would not be where I am today,” Billy reflects. At Ferrum College, he found more than a place to play baseball; he found a home, a community, and the love of his life, Sarah.

From 1991 to 1993, Billy’s dominance on the mound under legendary Coach Abe Naff left an indelible mark on Ferrum College athletics. He set NCAA Division III records that still stand today, averaging 19.1 strikeouts per nine innings in a single season and 16.0 over his career, earning First-Team All-American honors in 1993. His achievements were a testament not just to his talent, but to his work ethic, discipline, and the values instilled in him at Ferrum College.

Billy went on to an extraordinary 16-year Major League Baseball career, playing for five teams and recording 422 saves, a 2.31 ERA, and 1,196 strikeouts — the highest strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio in MLB history for pitchers with at least 900 innings. A seven-time All-Star

Yet it is not only his record-setting career that inspires; it is his humble, servant leadership. In 2025, Billy returned to Ferrum College as the keynote speaker for the Commencement Exercises, where he was awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree in Humanities. This recognition honored not only his athletic achievements but his continued commitment to Ferrum College, mentoring students, giving back to his community, and exemplifying the values that define a Ferrum College education.

Billy and Sarah have raised four children — Will, Jeremy, Olivia, and Kason —

instilling the same values they embraced at Ferrum College: faith, perseverance, and service. Will recently made his Major League debut with the Toronto Blue Jays, carrying the Wagner legacy forward. The Wagners’ devotion to their alma mater and their community exemplifies how Ferrum College shapes not just athletes, but leaders and lifelong contributors.

Billy’s Hall of Fame induction is historic.

He is the first Division III player, the first Virginian, and the first left-handed reliever to receive this honor. In recognition of his achievements and the pride he brings to Ferrum College, the Board of Trustees designated January 21 as “Billy Wagner Day.” From humble beginnings to the pinnacle of professional baseball, Billy Wagner’s story exemplifies the very best of Ferrum College: faith, excellence, perseverance, and a commitment to lifting others along the way. Ferrum College proudly salutes Greg Craddock ’92, whose selection as the 2025 Mid-Atlantic Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young LLP stands as a powerful affirmation of bold leadership, innovation, and impact.

But Greg’s story is far more than a prestigious award; it is a journey rooted in service, anchored in faith, and driven by a deeper purpose to help others succeed.

A proud Ferrum College alumnus, Greg Craddock ‘92 has a path from the Panther athletic community to national recognition that reflects the enduring power of a Ferrum College education.

His early career in the U.S. Army Special Forces exemplified courage, integrity, and unwavering dedication to service.

After more than 20 years in intelligence and security roles, Greg earned his MBA in Organizational Leadership and went on to lead the private acquisition of Patriot Group International (PGI) in 2009.

As CEO and Chairman of PGI, Greg transformed the company into a nationally recognized defense and intelligence firm known for its innovation, growth, and commitment to employing veterans. Under his leadership, PGI earned multiple distinctions, including Inc. magazine’s “Fast 500,” the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s GovCon Contractor of the Year, and Virginia Business magazine’s “Best Places to Work” for several consecutive years. His success in business is matched only by his focus on people — cultivating a corporate culture where service, excellence, and respect guide every decision.

ANNIVERSARIES Ferrum’s NJCAA National Championship Teams During Homecoming Weekend 2025, Ferrum College celebrated the 60th anniversary of the 1965 Panther football team’s National Junior Athletic Association’s national championship title. Under the leadership of legendary Head Football Coach Hank Norton, Ferrum won four National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) football championships in a 13-year span from 1965 to 1977.

In Coach Hank Norton’s sixth year as head coach, the 1965 Ferrum Panther football team went undefeated in regular season play. The Panthers rolled into Savannah, Georgia, with a 9-0 record to play in the Shrine Bowl, recognized by the National Junior Athletic Association as the national championship game.

Norton’s team then faced top-ranked McCook Junior College out of Nebraska, winning a 16-0 shutout to claim the title on November 26, 1965.

Ferrum’s ferocious defense in 1965 allowed only 19 points, while the offense piled up 260 points. The shutout win over McCook was the first of four national football crowns for the Panthers and catapulted Ferrum onto the national scene.

Another strong team took the field for Norton in 1966 and the Panthers almost repeated their 1965 title run.

Ferrum reached the Shrine Bowl, again in Savannah, played November 25, 1966, but fell 28-7 to Kilgore (Tex.) Junior College. The title game was tied 7-7 in the fourth quarter when Kilgore scored to take a 14-7 game. The Panthers were forced to throw the ball and were intercepted twice in the waning 26 | FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS | WWW.FERRUM.EDU/FERRUM-GIVING

moments, and Kilgore scored on both turnovers.

In 1967, the Panthers produced a 7-1 record. The only loss was a stunning upset to Lees-McRae College, who went on to play for the national championship.

Ferrum came back in 1968 and posted one of its all-time greatest wins. Norton’s team flew to Miami, Oklahoma, to face Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO). It was the seventh game of the season and both teams brought unbeaten records into the game. NEO was the defending national champion and was celebrating Homecoming with a capacity crowd on hand to watch the Golden Norsemen. In one of the most hyped junior college football games in the country that season, Ferrum prevailed with a 29-19 upset win.

Norton’s team compiled a 9-0 regular season record that year and once again reached the national championship game. This time, the Panthers whitewashed Phoenix Junior College 41-19 to secure Ferrum’s second national title in four years.

The NJCAA championship games were not held from 1973 to 1978. Ferrum posted a 10-0 record in 1974 and was named national champion. Norton’s 1977 team capped a 9-1 season, and again was named national champion. In

a November 11, 1977 article, Washington Post sportswriter Betty Cuniberti described Hank Norton this way: “Ferrum is a kind of football orphanage, run for the past 17 years by an intense, loving, and bald man named Hank Norton, who has been voted National Junior College Football Coach of the Year three times while compiling his present 123-32-8 record.

He won national championships in 1965, 1968, 1974, and 1977 with players nobody else wanted.

“We take the too-smalls and tooslows,” said Norton. “Out there in the world somewhere are 22 kids saying, ‘Let me play. Give me a chance.’”

During his life, Norton was inducted into the Ferrum College Alumni Sports Hall of Fame, the University of Lynchburg Sports Hall of Fame, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, and the National Junior College Athletic Association Football Hall of Fame.

SCHOOLFIELD HALL TURNS

Ferrum College celebrated the centenary of Schoolfield Hall at Homecoming Weekend 2025 with an original play by the late Professor Emeritus Rex Stephenson, Faith of Our Fathers, and tours of the building and its archives.

Ferrum College President Mirta Martin said, “Schoolfield Hall has stood as a witness to a century of learning, worship, creativity, and community at Ferrum College. To celebrate its 100th anniversary with the final work of our legendary Professor Emeritus Dr. Rex Stephenson is both joyful and deeply meaningful.”

Located in Ferrum’s historic district, Schoolfield Hall is listed on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Dedicated in 1925 as the chapel for Ferrum Training School, it was funded by President Benjamin Beckham and the Woman’s Missionary Society of the Virginia Methodist Conference to provide worship and concert space. A History of Ferrum College (1977) calls it “the most beautiful structure on the campus.”

As Ferrum grew into a junior college, the building’s lower level also housed a gymnasium, recreation rooms, and a library. Alumnus Dr. William Wray ’61 recalled cleaning the chapel to pay tuition and playing its organ.

A 1980s renovation converted the building into offices and rehearsal spaces for theatre arts, including the Blue Ridge Dinner Theater, a flex theatre, Sale Theatre, and support rooms for sets, props, and costumes. The “flex” was rededicated in April 2023 as The Rex Stephenson Theatre, with murals honoring Stephenson’s drama programs he created since 1973.

Over the decades, faculty, students, alumni, interns, and community members have performed, volunteered, and celebrated in Schoolfield Hall. Many appreciate its historic charm—even when the weather or the eccentricities of an aging building present challenges. The steeple bell, removed decades earlier, was placed in the garden by President Emerita Jennifer Braaten in 2008, and former President David Johns began the tradition of ringing it before graduation in 2019.

Today, Schoolfield Hall continues to inspire. Its brick walls hold stories of perseverance and purpose, and its stage has given voice to generations of dreamers. A century later, it remains a beacon of Ferrum College’s enduring spirit—a place where faith and learning intertwine, where creativity flourishes, and where the College’s motto, ”Not Self, But Others”, continues to echo through time.

50th Anniversary of Jack Tale Players Since the first Jack Tale show at Callaway Elementary School on December 11, 1975, Rex Stephenson’s dramatized folktales have delighted and entertained more than a million audience members, young and old, in 34 states and several other countries. The Jack Tale Players perform Appalachian tales and foot-stomping traditional music in highly interactive and playful shows with fast-paced action and innovative staging.

Although Professor Emeritus Stephenson died on August 13 at age 81, he was still performing and directing until March. His Jack Tale Players, led by Assistant Professor Emily BlankenshipTucker, celebrated their 50th anniversary at Homecoming Weekend with joy, exuberance, and nostalgia as well as grief.

They performed at several schools and three mainstage shows on campus. They also enjoyed sharing stories with each other and viewing memorabilia on display in the Rex Stephenson Theatre. The actors, aged 9 to over 80, included several alumni from the “Early Years” Jack Tale Players of the 1970s, Professor Emerita Jody Brown, four brand new Jack Tale Players who were thrilled to join the troupe, and TJ Baker ’24, who flew back from Australia. Kristy Bell Sawyer ’12 brought her four-year-old to

Homecoming and wrote afterwards, “Bringing my daughter to a Jack Tale show and being able to perform for her is truly one of the highlights of my life.”

Creative drama expert Nellie McCaslin wrote about this “extraordinary Jack Tales troupe” that “theatre for children and theatre for adults are enriched by the outstanding work of Rex Stephenson, and students are fortunate to have studied with him.”

108th Commencement and Presidential Inauguration Celebrated MAY 2024

Ferrum College celebrated its 108th Commencement and the inauguration of its 13th president, Dr. Mirta M. Martin, on Saturday, May 4, 2024. The ceremony included the investiture of President Martin and a keynote address delivered by Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Winsome Earle-Sears, who also received an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities.
