FERRET HEALTH CARE

The information included is not intended to replace the medical advice of a qualified veterinarian. If your ferret’s health is in question, please seek veterinary assistance.

Prolapsed Rectum

A PROLAPSED RECTUM IS GENERALLY CAUSED BY ONE OF TWO THINGS:

1. 2.

Not enough water in their diet. Baby ferrets’ food should be wet down (one part food to three parts water) NOTE: We do not recommend feeding any dry or canned cat food.

A bacterial or viral infection that will cause the ferret to have a runny stool.

PRO TIP: Using the Marshall Fresh & Clean Litter in-store allows caretakers to easily spot potential problems in the pan of white, dust-free, virgin, paper pellets. Recommending this product with every ferret sale has the potential to create a loyal customer.

Upper Respiratory

Infections And Influenza

Ferrets are very susceptible to problems related to stress when introduced to a new environment. They are prone to upper respiratory infections and influenza and can catch these diseases through human contact.

If a ferret is sneezing, pay close attention to the color of its mucus and check to see if its eyes are clear. This will help determine if an infection is present or if the sneezing is due to another cause, such as litter. Dusty litters cause ferrets to sneeze. We recommend Marshall Premium Ferret Litter, made with 100% recycled paper. If sneezing is present along with yellow or green discharge:

• Treat your ferret with an antibiotic (we recommend Clavamox, Cefa-Drops or Baytril)

• Use Marshall Ferret Rx for congestion

• Feed a very wet (soupy consistency) mixture of Marshall Premium Ferret Diet and water

• Keep the ferret hydrated by adding Pedialyte to the water

TO HELP RESOLVE IT:

Wet down their food.

Administer an antibiotic (Clavamox, Cefa-Drops or Baytril) to prevent any infection to the exposed area. Dosage should be .1 ml every 12 hours.

Keep the area clean and apply Preparation H to soothe it.

Give daily doses of Marshall Furo-Vite high-calorie vitamin supplement to help keep the ferret healthy during healing.

ECE, or “green slime,” is still a bit of a mystery. Much is unknown about how the virus is spread, but any situation that brings ferrets together seems to have the potential to do so. It can also be transmitted by clothing or human contact. Aggressive treatment should begin at the first signs of green diarrhea.

Give an antibiotic (we recommend Clavamox, Cefa-Drops or Baytril) to fight off any secondary infection

Treat ECE with Pedialyte

Feed a soft diet of moistened Marshall Premium Ferret Diet mixed with chicken baby food or feed

Marshall’s Uncle Jim’s Duk Soup

In the absence of Uncle Jim’s Duk Soup, crush a 10 mg tablet of Pepcid AC and add 10 cc of water. Administer .25 cc’s 2-3 times a day.

Give a high-calorie vitamin supplement such as Marshall Furo-Vite or Ensure

Diarrhea

DIARRHEA IS A NON-SPECIFIC SYMPTOM WITH MANY DIFFERENT CAUSES:

• • •

Stress caused by change in environment, diet or water supply

Intestinal parasites or bacterial or viral intestinal infections

Eating too many treats

Overall, the most important things to remember are:

Keep the ferret hydrated

Feed a soft-food diet

Give a high-calorie supplement

No matter the cause, if left untreated, diarrhea may lead to death due to poor nutrient absorption and dehydration. Use Uncle Jim’s Duk Soup Mix to supplement your ferret’s regular diet. It helps stimulate their appetite, boost the immune system and balance the ferret’s digestive system. Uncle Jim’s mixes readily with warm water to form an easyto-feed paste. It can also be mixed in with the wet food and syringe-fed to an ailing ferret.

Litter Lax

Both our Premium Ferret Litter and our Fresh & Clean Litter are made from recycled sources with excellent absorbency. In fact, our paper litters are up to 400% more absorbent than clay litters, completely dust free, biodegradable and flushable!

Use our High Back Litter Pan to help keep your ferret’s space clean.

This great-tasting paste is a must-have for all ferret owners. Ferrets that lick their fur are prone to hairballs. Ferret Lax is the perfect remedy for both eliminating existing hairballs and preventing the formation of new ones. It also aids in removing other items which may have been accidentally ingested.
