Year 7 student, Adelaide and Year 9 student, Thokozile.

Welcome to our Term 2 newsletter. We are almost done with semester 1 of the 2026 school year… it is hard to believe that holidays are just around the corner! Before then, I want to wish students all the best with their upcoming assessment, and I look forward to sharing some of our academic results with our community in our next newsletter.

This term we have begun completing a review of our Uniform Policy. As I am sure you are aware, our uniform is often a hot topic amongst students. To support collective ownership of the uniform policy moving forward, Mackenzie Burn, one of our Deputy Principals has established a Uniform Policy Change team. Their goal is to collect feedback from key stakeholders on various elements of the policy. Mackenzie presented at our P&C meeting this term to share the plan for this review. I want to thank our students, staff and families for their ongoing engagement and feedback as we complete this review.

To date, our Uniform Policy Change Team has spent time examining our current practices and identifying areas where greater clarity, consistency and understanding may be needed. They have worked through the different components of the policy, where it became clear that many areas are interconnected and, at times, open to interpretation.

Staff and student feedback has been incredibly valuable, particularly around ensuring that the consultation process is manageable and meaningful. In response, the team have refined their approach to ensure they are gathering broad feedback while being respectful of everyone’s time.

Across the rest of the year, consultation will continue through:

• Staff, student and parent surveys

• Ongoing conversations and feedback gathering by Change Team members

• Printed copies of the Uniform Policy available in staff areas for additional feedback

The next step for our Change Team will be to:

• Review and analyse emerging themes from the surveys

• Share feedback gathered through conversations across the school community

• Begin collaboratively refining sections of the policy and identifying opportunities for clearer wording and processes

Once they have done this, we will be ready to move from consultation into co-construction, ensuring the updated Uniform Policy reflects the needs of our students, families and staff. We will provide an update at our next P&C meeting on 27 July; this meeting will be held online so if you are interested in hearing more, please contact pandc@fernygroveshs.eq.edu.au to register for the meeting link.

As we head into the winter holiday break, I hope students and our families have a safe and relaxing holiday break, returning energised for Term 3 on Monday 13 July.

Yours sincerely,

It has been another busy and rewarding term at Ferny Grove SHS, with plenty of opportunities for students to get involved, challenge themselves and contribute to our school community.

Our Student Leadership Team has continued to make a significant impact this term. During our recent Student Leadership Day, student leaders worked together to plan and prepare a range of activities and initiatives that support house spirit, student engagement and school culture. It was fantastic to see students collaborating, sharing ideas and taking ownership of projects that will benefit the wider school community.

That leadership was also on display during our House Assemblies. For the first time, these assemblies were entirely student-led, with our House Leaders planning and delivering the presentations for their peers. While there were certainly a few nerves along the way, the confidence, teamwork and commitment shown by our student leaders was something they should be very proud of.

A highlight of the term was our Ferny Scoops for Success celebration. Students who had earned 25 or more Ferny Value Points were invited to enjoy a well-deserved ice cream as recognition of their consistent demonstration of our school values. It was wonderful to

celebrate so many students who contribute positively to our school culture every day through their effort, behaviour and commitment to learning.

We have also been incredibly proud of the response to this year's Push-Up Challenge. With more than 100 students and staff participating, the Ferny Grove community has embraced the opportunity to raise awareness for mental health while supporting one another through a shared challenge. Beyond the impressive number of push-ups completed, the challenge has provided an important reminder of the positive connection between physical activity, wellbeing and community.

As we move towards the end of the semester, it is pleasing to reflect on the many ways our students continue to demonstrate leadership, participation and school spirit. Whether leading an assembly, earning Ferny Value Points, supporting a house event or taking part in the Push-Up Challenge, these moments help make Ferny Grove SHS the connected and supportive community that it is.

GEEWER CLAIMED THE CUP, BUT THE CHALLENGE IS FAR FROM OVER!

Held on the last day of Term 1, House Cup Challenge Day was the perfect way to finish the term, with students diving into everything from the giant inflatable obstacle course to debating, Just Dance and eSports. Every activity counted towards valuable House Cup points, creating a day full of energy, teamwork and friendly rivalry. This time, Geewer claimed the coveted cup, but with another House Cup Challenge Day coming in Term 3, who knows which house will be celebrating next!

FROM BREAKFAST TO LUNCH, THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING TASTY WAITING AT FERNY...

Ferny Canteen

As the weather cools down, the canteen is serving up a range of delicious winter warmers to keep students fuelled throughout the day. This season’s menu features favourites including butter chicken, pasta bolognese, chicken burritos, pizza and our very popular karaage chicken and jasmine rice.

Don't forget students can start their morning with our fantastic daily breakfast special or a toasted filled ciabatta, hash brown or a double cheese toastie. We also sell hot chocolates for just $4! It’s the perfect way to warm up before class and great value too. Open from 8am.

Be sure to visit the canteen and enjoy these tasty winter offerings while they’re available. We look forward to seeing you!

X Block Seniors Café

The Senior Café continues to be a popular destination for our Senior students looking to enjoy quality food and a welcoming atmosphere. Offering baristamade coffee and café-style drinks, the café provides a relaxed space to catch up with friends before school or at break time.

The menu includes a wide range of hot meals, snacks, fresh sandwiches, salads and sushi, with something to suit every taste.

How lucky are we here at Ferny to be able to offer a vibrant café experience to our Senior students and staff.

Making Her-story: Ferny Girls Forge a New Rugby League

Legacy

This term has been an exciting one for Rugby League at Ferny Grove, highlighted by the commencement of our Rugby League series for both our Year 7 and Year 8 Girls. For the first time in 25 years, Ferny Grove has fielded a girls rugby league team, a significant milestone for our school and an exciting step forward for female participation in the sport. The growth in interest has been outstanding, with a squad of 27 girls across Years 7 and 8 now actively involved in the program. The enthusiasm, commitment, and willingness of our students to embrace the rapidly growing female rugby league pathway has been fantastic to see, and we are excited about what the future holds for girls rugby league at Ferny Grove.

This term also saw the return of the Tier Two Struddys Cup competition. Ferny Grove entered both a Year 7 team and a combined Year 8/9 side competing in the Year 9 division. Our Year 7 team made a strong start to the season, earning a draw in their opening match, while our combined Year 8/9 team produced a spirited performance, narrowly going down to Alexandra Hills by just two points.

Adding to an already busy term, our girls were also fortunate to attend a RISE Development Clinic hosted by the Norths Devils and NRL Dolphins at Kayo Stadium. The clinic formed part of the ongoing community development of female rugby league and provided our students with an excellent opportunity to further develop their skills, knowledge, and passion for the game alongside experienced coaches and development staff.

While a round of Schools Touch League was scheduled to take place this term, unfortunately ongoing poor weather resulted in the competition being postponed. The round has now been rescheduled for Term 3, and we look forward to seeing our students back out

Sweet Success: LEAF Students Build Edible Cells

LEAF COORDINATOR

Our Year 8 LEAF students recently brought Science to life in a deliciously creative way by designing and building edible cells! As part of their study of cell structure and function, students used a variety of tasty ingredients to represent different organelles, carefully explaining how each part contributes to the functioning of plant and animal cells. From jelly cytoplasm to lolly mitochondria and biscuit cell walls, the classroom was filled with creativity, collaboration, and impressive scientific understanding.

Ms Cormack’s students loved combining critical thinking with culinary flair in this engaging hands-on learning experience!

Learning in Action: From NAPLAN to New Adventures

NAPLAN 2026 SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED

During Weeks 7 and 8 of Term 1, our Year 7 and Year 9 students successfully completed the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that provides parents and carers with valuable information about how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against national standards and compared with students across Australia.

We are pleased to report that all testing sessions ran smoothly, with students in both year levels demonstrating exceptional behaviour and maturity throughout the assessment period in the SPC. Despite widely reported global issues with the NAPLAN online platform, our school did not experience any technical disruptions, allowing all scheduled tests to proceed as planned.

A total of 1,915 tests were submitted, achieving outstanding completion rates of 97.6% for Year 7 students and 93% for Year 9 students.

We congratulate our students on their positive approach to the assessments and thank our staff for their organisation and support throughout the testing period.

Individual student NAPLAN results are expected to be available to families during Term 3, in August.

YEAR 7 STUDENTS PREPARE FOR CAMP ADVENTURE

Excitement is building as our Year 7 students prepare for their annual camp experience in Week 10. From Wednesday 24 June to Friday 26 June 2026, students will travel to QCCC Tamborine for three days of adventure, teamwork and fun.

The Year 7 Camp is always a highlight of the school year and provides students with a fantastic opportunity to strengthen friendships, build confidence and get to know others within

their cohort outside the classroom environment. With the cool but generally sunny winter weather expected, conditions should be ideal for students to make the most of the many outdoor activities on offer.

Throughout the camp, students will participate in a range of exciting activities facilitated by Vertec Adventures and supported by Ferny Grove State High School staff. This year’s program includes the Giant Swing, Bush MasterChef, Ultimate Tree Climb, Survivor Challenge and Big Group Games, all designed to encourage teamwork, resilience and personal growth.

In the evenings, our teachers and support staff provide a variety of activities that cater to different interests and energy levels, ensuring all students can engage in ways that are enjoyable and meaningful to them. Students will also participate in house-based activities, including GAGA Ball and the creation of Year 12 Graduation Posters, helping to foster school spirit and connections across year levels.

To ensure students who are not attending camp also benefit from the values of community, creativity and connection that underpin the camp experience, we will be replicating a number of key camp activities at school across the three days. Students will participate in a range of collaborative and creative workshops inspired by both the daytime and evening camp program. These activities are designed to foster teamwork, problem-solving, self-expression and a sense of belonging, creating a meaningful and enjoyable experience for all students.

We would like to thank the many staff members who give their time to support this important program. Whether attending camp or facilitating activities at school, their commitment helps create memorable learning experiences that contribute significantly to the positive culture of our Year 7 cohort. We look forward to seeing our students embrace new challenges, make lasting memories and continue building the strong sense of community that makes Ferny Grove State High School such a special place.

It’s been another vibrant and creative term for our Arts Department, with students embracing every opportunity to perform, create and be inspired. From impressive Visual Art projects and engaging Drama experiences to exciting excursions, including visits to QPAC, our students have been busy exploring their talents and broadening

Our Year 7 and 8 Art students have just finalised their clay sculptures for the Creatures from Elsewhere unit. For the first part of this unit, students have developed their clay hand-building techniques to design and sculpt a unique creature inspired by morphing Australian native animals. Students have explored ways to manipulate clay to create detailed surface textures, expressive poses, and imaginative combinations of native Australian animals. From scales and feathers to fur and spikes, each artwork showcases creativity, problem-solving, and growing confidence with clay techniques and processes. Keep an eye out for photos of their resolved works on our school Facebook page later this the term!

Year 12 Visual Arts in Practice students are currently undertaking their D1 Experimental Folios unit, researching established artists and artisans to inspire their own creative practice. Through stylistic experimentation and exploration of different materials and techniques, students are developing unique artworks that reflect both their research and personal artistic voice while building valuable creative and technical skills.

Year 7 Drama students are busy creating performances to be shared with the kindergarten students from Edge Learning and prep students from Ferny Grove State School. It is wonderful to work with community so that our young creatives have a real life experience. At the heart of everything they do in the Drama room is the development of communication, learning how to work collaboratively and sharing a creative vision through embodied learning. Mr Michael Los and Mrs Beck Head and working with the classes so that the students can achieve success.

The Year 12 Drama students are busy working in role, as director, to transform William Shakespeare’s As You Like It and The Merchant of Venice into a Contemporary performance. They have been developing their responses in class time and their own time, using peers as actors to capture moments of dramatic action which best demonstrate their directorial vision and personal aesthetic.

Some of these directorial visions will be shared at a performance evening next term.

Real-world business in action! From the classroom to the boardroom!

22 of our Year 10 Business students swapped the classroom for the corporate world as they travelled into the city for the immersive Ecoman Program, based at Waterfront Place in the CA ANZ offices. Dressed professionally and navigating peak-hour public transport and train strikes, students experienced what life in the business world can really look like.

Working in small company teams, students stepped into executive roles ranging from CEO to Head of HR, making critical management decisions to rescue a struggling business across a four-year business simulation. Along the way, they tackled real-world challenges including economic recessions, union negotiations over redundancies, and fierce overseas competition threatening market share.

The experience culminated in an exciting “AGM” presentation, where teams showcased their company performance, strategic decisions and future forecasts.

Congratulations to Company: Expressive Expresso, who claimed victory with the highest share price at the end of trading - in an incredibly close finish, just $2 per share ahead of second place!

What an incredible example of authentic, hands-on learning packed into just two days!

Ralph Took's Legacy Lives On

New auditorium signage proudly honours the former principal whose vision and leadership helped shape Ferny Grove SHS.

Late last year, as part of the auditorium mural project, the original “Ralph Took Auditorium” lettering was removed from the building facade. While the name of the auditorium itself never changed, we know this caused concern for many in our community who deeply value the legacy of former Principal Ralph Took and the enormous contribution he made to Ferny Grove SHS.

Today, we are proud to unveil new signage honouring Ralph and the lasting impact he had on our school community. His leadership, vision and dedication helped shape Ferny Grove SHS into the place it is today, and his legacy continues

to be felt across generations of students, staff and families.

We would also like to sincerely thank the Took family for working closely with us throughout the design and placement process of the new signage. Their support and collaboration have helped ensure this tribute appropriately honours Ralph’s enduring connection to Ferny Grove SHS.

We thank our community for their passion and care for our school’s history, and we are pleased to ensure Ralph Took’s name continues to hold a proud and prominent place within our school.

A World of Opportunities

From Karneval festivities to international visitors and scholarships abroad, our Languages community is flourishing.

Willkommen zurück und Selamat Datang kembali! The Languages and International Student Program at Ferny Grove SHS has certainly had a fantastic start to 2026. Joining our staff this year is Frau Angelika Street who is with us 3 days a week to teach German and Maths – Herzlich Willkommen!

Early in Term One German Immersion staff held a Meet and Greet session for the new Year 7 German Immersion parents. It was fantastic to see so many parents in attendance to discover more about the challenges and adventures that await their children during their Immersion learning journey. We connected after the information session for light refreshment and chance to get to know our new parents.

Our LPSG (Languages Parent Support Group) also held its AGM and first general meeting for the year. We are pleased to announce that the office bearers for 2026 are Georg Lippold (President), Theres Schulze and Iain Rowley (Vice-President), Phil Shield (Secretary), Joana Kelly (Treasurer) and Agnes Chikan and we thank them in advance for the work they will undertake to support our Indonesian and German students and teachers this year. Thanks also to Year 12 cultural leader, Sarah for attending our meetings to provide us with a student voice. Please see below for future meeting dates to pop in your calendar:

• Term 3 Thursday 30th July5pm in the Library

Term 4 Thursday 15th October - 5pm in the Library

If you would like to be a part of the LPSG please register via the QR code below. We are always keen for volunteers and new faces!

Our annual Karneval celebrations were held once again in the Hall. Also known as Fastnacht or Fasching, the “fünfte Jahreszeit” or fifth season is a huge tradition in many German states and

a strong tradition here at Ferny. The organising teachers, Elgin Haggerty and Jacqueline van Alphen and a team of senior helpers ran a tight ship and the lunchtime party was the best attended event in years with all the usual games, costumes, music, balloons, donuts and lollies.

PASCH Scholarships 2026

Each year as part of our status as a PASCH School (Partner School of the Future) one student from Ferny Grove SHS is awarded a fully funded scholarship for young learners of German which includes a 3-week intensive language course, airfares, insurance, accommodation and food. This year’s language course will be conducted in Benediktbeuern, Germany from 5 – 25th July 2026. We are extremely pleased to announce that the 2026 PASCH scholarship recipient is Owen in Year 10 German Immersion!

We thank the Goethe Institut for this amazing opportunity and wish Owen all the very best for his upcoming trip. We can’t wait to hear all about it upon his return!

German Immersion – Program of Excellence at FG

In the GI recruitment space, Term 1 was a whirlwind of primary school visits. We have now visited all our feeder primary schools to actively promote the German Immersion Program to our target audience – Year 6 students. The students were engaged, attentive and very keen. It was a pleasure to meet them and talk to them about our program. We thank our senior students – Sarah, Issy and Hannah for also coming along and giving the student’s perspective.

FGSHS also began Ferny Experience Days in term 1. These days are designed to give primary students a whole-day taste of high school and we were lucky to run a GI session as part of the day. Jacqueline van Alphen had a ball incorporating German colours, numbers and vocab in a very active session. These sessions will continue to take place each term.

cohort close on 12th June.

Our term 1 Language Assistant Sam Feth continued on his great work in classes with us from last term. Sam has been a quiet and steady addition to our team and his attention to detail and readiness to help has been a great help to our Languages Team. Sam recently finished up and we thank the Reid family for hosting him.

This week we welcomed language assistant/prac student Lucas Dargel. Lucas is the first student to take part in our partnership with Paderborn University and he will be focusing on maths classes during his 6 week stay. Lucas will be staying with the Day family – thank you for opening up your home to Lucas and giving him a real Australian homestay experience!

In the International Student Program space, we currently have students from England, Italy, Germany, China, Austria, Vietnam, Nauru and Japan. Such

volunteer time out of their week to run special sessions with our visiting students. I’d also like to thank Simon Poppelwell and Nicola Hight, who invited the students to join their junior Indonesian classes for a true intercultural experience. As always we had an abundance of Ferny students who volunteered to take on a buddy, making them feel welcome and including them in their daily routines and friendship groups. Later this term we look forward to welcoming a study tour from Hong Kong – a first for Ferny!

If you are interested in hosting an international student, please contact our International Homestay Co-ordinator Coco Lu via the following email address: international@fernygroveshs. eq.edu.au

At the start of Term 2 I presented the GI program last week to our other very important target audience – parents – at the Signature Program Information Evening Many interested parents attended. We look forward to meeting the next generation of GI families in 2027 and maintaining our current high class numbers.

We look forward to further opportunities to get to know our upcoming languages students over the next few weeks with Under 8s Days at various primary schools and the upcoming Year 6 Languages Day of Excellence in early June.

Expression of Interest forms for the 2027 Year 7 German Immersion

have settled in and are enjoying their Australian experience.

We kickstarted our school study tours with our long-standing visiting school Jumonji HS from Japan returning to us and we welcomed Labschool Cirendeu from Indonesia for the first time. I would like to acknowledge the intense preparation which is carried out to prepare for these tours by our ISP Coordinator, Ms Coco Lu and our staff members – Adrian Sands, Jamie Lay and Rebecca Head, who regularly

Kaffeeklatsch is continuing this year run by our language assistants and takes place on Wednesday lunchtimes in XG05. This is a great opportunity for German students across all year levels to come together and speak German, play German games and do German activities. Our After School Kaffeeklatsch is back by popular demand this year and takes place on Wednesday afternoons from 3.15 – 4.15pm in X Block. Afternoon tea is provided, and fun guaranteed. These sessions take place in Week 7 of each term.

Once again in 2026 the German teachers are offering German tutoring on a Tuesday lunchtime in XG05. Tutoring is designed to assist with homework completion, exam preparation, assignment work or clarification of work completed in class. Tutoring will run from 3.15pm – 4pm and students may leave before 4pm if needed.

We can’t wait to celebrate all things language and culture with the Ferny Grove community!
