NO SECRET

BERKLEY

ONE-OF-A-KIND

THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, UNIQUE BUSINESSES, BOUTIQUES, RESTAURANTS & EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE PROVIDERS, THERE’S MUCH TO DO & SEE.

For this reason, Berkley has earned the reputation as a “hidden gem.”

New to Berkley this Fall is the Berk Perk Discount Card, which is available to purchase at local Chamber member businesses and other outlets. Cardholders can take advantage of exclusive discounts and other offerings from their favorite spots around town using a QR code. Offerings vary business to business and are subject to change quarterly. Anyone with a card will be able to use the perks without limit, giving yet another reason to shop, dine, and use services in the Berkley Area.

One of the participating Berk Perk businesses that customers know and love is Woodward Corner Market, a large grocer that plans to make the cards available for purchase onsite so customers can save big on the groceries they purchase. The participating businesses continues to grow. Other confirmed participants are VITRINE, Republica, Odd Fellows Antiques, The Twisted Shamrock, Oak Park Social, Ullman's Health & Beauty, Peninsulas, Toadvine Books, Berkley Common, Card My Yard Clawson, Berkley Medical Center Pharmacy, Stransky & Company, The Wedding Shoppe, Republica, Kim + Tim Real Estate Partners Zoom Room

“The cards are only $30,” said Chamber Executive Director Darlene Rothman. “You use them just a few times and they pay for themselves. They’re also good until December 2023. We encourage families to buy them, have the grandparents purchase them, and give them as gifts. Most of the businesses are the same ones that support Berkley School activities, team sports, community events, etc. We even have a local realtor who is giving out the cards as a thank you to new home buyers.”

A list of locations where the cards are available for purchase is on the BACC’s website. Eventually, the Berkley Area Chamber also

partner together as much as possible, and our connection is stronger than ever and continues to grow. The new DDA director, Mike McGuinness, has really taken this to another level.”

Chamber members include not only Berkley businesses but those in surrounding communities like Oak Park and Huntington Woods, which have some must-see sites themselves. For example, three new businesses have recently set up shop along 11 Mile in Oak Park, changing the historical industrial face of the area: Dog & Pony Show Brewing, Unexpected

thing is cleaned and opened up for business as usual.”

This year’s Art Bash was back to the same amount of vendors pre-pandemic. “We could not pull this event off without April McCrumb, owner of Catching Fireflies and Yellow Door Art Market. Her keen sense of picking the right artists for the art fair is vital to its success,” Nicolai stated.

This year's Berkley Street Art Fest again included a Shop for Good Village, which allows a portion of the proceeds earned to go towards a charitable or otherwise ‘good’ cause.

COMMUNITY. WITH SO MANY

Darlene Rothman

“Susan Rogal of VITRINE is the driving force behind that,” Rothman explained. “The program keeps growing. A portion of the proceeds earned goes towards a nonprofit or other organization, sometimes even third-world countries.” So, not only do customers get to bring home some great one-of-a-kind finds but they can rest assured they’re purchases are put to good use.

RESTAURANT WEEKEND RECENTLY KICKED OFF BOO!KLEY MONTH in early October, where patrons had an opportunity to dine out and enjoy discounts at many local eateries. The annual event gives them a chance to restaurant-hop for a night or two or simply enjoy a menu they haven’t yet tried. Participating locations had some unique offerings that were sure to satisfy.

“This promotional event was another great example of the Chamber and DDA working together,” said Nicolai. “The Chamber organized the restaurant participation and the Berkley DDA paid for and coordinated music at the downtown restaurants, which was a new addition this year.”

The annual State of the Cities event was held in October with the Chamber honoring exceptional community members and businesses. The Businessperson of the Year award went to two people this time around, Katie Kutscher and Chris Gross, former owners of Berkley Common.

“They’ve done so much for the community,” said Rothman, “especially during COVID. They created unique outdoor seating to accommodate guests and hosted events upstairs at Berkley Common. They’ve attracted a lot of people to Berkley.”

The Berkley Area Organization of the Year award went to Berkley First: A United Methodist Church, which is led by Pastor Zack Dunlap

“Their doors are always open to welcome the public to their events, and partner with local businesses and organizations. They also have a small food pantry box outside in front of the church. They’re just always very receptive, and involved with open arms,” Rothman explained.

Nearly every month there’s something exciting to check out, allowing for unforgettable memory-making. The Chamber is happy to support the many downtown events put on by other organizations including the County Oakland Irish Fest in September, Berkley DDA BOO!KLEY activities held in October, and the end of the year will bring the Berkley Holiday Lights Parade complete with a visit from Santa and a tree-lighting ceremony as well as the Berkley DDA's Merri Month activities.

OUTSIDE OF THE RESTAURANTS AND BUSINESSES EVERYONE ENJOYS, Rothman highlighted the outstanding service community, saying that many people come to Berkley for things like tax services, financial planning, working with realtors and more. When they come to the area, they inevitably wind up visiting places that look interesting nearby.

“I also work for Aero/Pacific Drapery,” Rothman said. “And I’m always asking customers how they found us. Many times, it’s because they came to the Berkley area for a service, shopping and dining.” The Berkley area has many reasons to draw people to the community.

The Berkley Area Chamber of Commerce continues to grow its membership and encourages businesses of all kinds to sign up and join in on all of the benefits it has to offer.

“Any type of business can join the Chamber,” Rothman said. “Members get access to networking events, foster connections with other business owners, and in turn, grow their own businesses. We highly encourage home-based companies to join us, which have popped up more and more amid the pandemic. It’s a reason to get out and get to know others within the community.

“Many of our members have stayed and grown throughout the years because they’ve gotten involved. Many members volunteer and talk with people at events as it’s a friendly, casual way to meet potential clients and customers. They’re not in it for a profit. They just know that conversations are memorable and encourage people to be aware of what they have to offer.” n

fishing lure for his piece “Hooked on Michigan.” He’s also designed murals inside restaurants and other businesses.

SINCE ITS INCEPTION, Cascardo’s Art Action Experience’s customers have ranged widely from non-profits, corporations, communities, or anyone just wanting a fun interactive activity for guests at a special event.

Cascardo has provided pieces for both indoor and outdoor events, large and small.

“I like creating art from my imagination, looking at and interpreting my experiences in abstract and representational imagery,” he said. “I’m inspired by the creative process and the work of artists like Miro, Kandinsky and Picasso.” These influences are evident in Cascardo’s creations, which tend to include cubism and abstract imagery.

DANIEL CASCARDO HAS BEEN AN ARTIST FOR OVER 30 YEARS. AFTER ATTENDING THE COLLEGE FOR CREATIVE STUDIES IN DETROIT, HE MOVED TO CHICAGO AND WORKED IN THE ANIMATION INDUSTRY WHILE DEVELOPING HIS STYLE AS A FINE ARTIST.

TMICHIGAN, settled in Huntington Woods, and began leaving his mark on Metro Detroit.

“I had done several outdoor murals at the time and for some reason was labeled a street artist,” Cascardo recalled. “It seemed to be the beginning of the street art movement, with more and more artists making their mark in public spaces.” According to his web site, however, Cascardo coins himself as a visual artist who “creates abstract paintings that combine elements from primitive cultures with Euro sophistication.”

In 2012, Cascardo Art & Design LLC was born in an effort to both promote his artwork and begin engaging communities in a unique interactive art making process called the Cascardo Art Action Experience. During such an experience, Cascardo brings to life an artistic outline to be filled in by others with color, ultimately creating a vibrant, large-scale masterpiece. These outlines are often painted on canvases. However, Cascardo has also used other backdrops, including wood, drywall and even a colossal

Cascardo brought to life an imaginative piece he said represents the “energy, color, creativity and life found in the Berkley community” for Street Art Fest. Residents took a moment to stop by and pick up a paintbrush, together filling in a black-and-white canvas. The colorful result is now on display at the Library.

“It is meant to engage your imagination and curiosity,” said Cascardo, who sometimes generates these outlines in the moment, without any pre-planning. Other times, he begins with a thought and a purpose, and fills in the blanks from there. Cascardo characterizes his artistic technique as

More Than A Typical Grocery Store

THEY’RE BAA-AACK! SAMPLES. EXTINCT DURING THE PAST FEW YEARS, WOODWARD CORNER MARKET HAS WELCOMED BACK LOCAL VENDORS TO OFFER SAMPLES.

Doing so is part of the store’s three pillars of “fresh,” “local” and “value.” “Our top priority is local,” says Ashley Dewicki, marketing manager of Woodward Corner Market, a “market format” store within the Meijer grocery family. “We want to serve the community of local vendors by having various events to promote them and giving them the chance to offer samples in the market.

Meeting shoppers face-to-face with samples is best way for vendors to expand their reach.” Often, she adds, the store can be a stepping stone for small producers to learn the ins-and-outs of bringing a product to market and getting into the Meijer supercenters. And obviously, shoppers are just as pleased to be part of the action – who doesn’t want to try a new nibble?

ANOTHER WAY THE STORE EMPHASIZES LOCAL PRODUCTS is by clearly labeling Michigan-made items, including favorites like ice cream and craft beer. Vendors can also make use of the café space and host their own events, like how to build a charcuterie board and cooking classes for kids.

Outdoor vendor markets are another chance for them to strut their stuff— the event during the Woodward Dream Cruise this year featured hatch pepper roasting, a DJ, games and multiple vendors. At the Berkley Art Bash, Woodward Corner bought additional booths and gave them to their

vendors to use. It’s all part of how the store builds tighter connections with the community.

While the store’s selections are downscaled and more specialized than what Meijer supercenters offer, Woodward Corner still offers shoppers three tiers of price points: local products, national products and Meijerbranded products.

“We like to say you can shop your way on your budget,” Ashley says, whether that’s supporting local products or going with family-favorite national brands. And if you don’t see what you’re looking for, you can use the QR codes posted throughout the store to request the product you want. It’s an easy way to connect with your neighborhood grocer. n 30955 Woodward Ave #305, Royal Oak | 248.955.1041 woodwardcornermarket.com | www.facebook.com/WoodwardCornerMarket

mission is to support regional artists and their contribution to Detroit’s legacy.

Both of Rogal’s ventures work hand-in-hand to generate exposure for artists while giving back. VITRINE is a ‘shop-for-good’ company, often sourcing life-changing fair-trade products. Many of the purchases customers make have a direct impact on the lives and communities of the women and men who create them, and every month, a portion of the company’s proceeds goes towards sponsoring children in Haiti through World Vision, impacting clean water initiatives through Charity Waters as well as supporting pet adoptions with contributions to the Humane Society

ROGAL SAID SHE IS LOOKING FORWARD to the arrival of MI Meals next door to VITRINE. The company was launched in August 2022 to help everyone live a healthier lifestyle. It has expanded to bring healthy meals, snacks, smoothies, and more to the Berkley community. She feels the two businesses, with their similar visions, will make excellent neighbors.

“We partner with several shops around Berkley,” Rogal explained. “Not only is there a fabulous smoothie and prepared healthy meals place opening in our shared marketplace in our adjoining building with great partnerships ahead with them, but Berkley truly is a family of businesses. You just reach out and they are there for you.”

One of her favorite things about being in Berkley is the opportunity to support local organizations and businesses. She said, “Throughout the year we work with local nonprofits and sponsor a variety of local benefit shopping events supporting local schools, community organizations and other fundraising initiatives through the sale of our products at our shop.”

The holidays are always perfect for rolling out specials, and VITRINE has some exciting plans for the remainder of the year. Rogal said the store will have exclusive offerings that coincide with the many upcoming community events.

“Berkley has a dynamic Fall full of events ahead,” she explained. “We will have gifts with purchases, refreshments, and an exciting rebate event around the holidays where you’ll get VITRINE gift cards for a percentage of dollars spent.”

W HEN NOT AT THE STORE GREETING

CUSTOMERS, Rogal enjoys frequenting other venues downtown. She said, “This area truly holds some of the loveliest little gems of shops, services, restaurants and more. Some of the most unique retail destinations in the state can be found in little over a 20-mile radius

covering Berkley, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Ferndale, Clawson, and beyond.”

Being in Berkley is exciting because there’s always something to do to encourage comradery and fun. Rogal said, “Whether it’s working together for a citywide benefit shopping event for a local cause, charity, or school, or partnering on events sharing customer lists to have more successful events and everything in between – or just reaching out to give each other praise or support – Berkley has the finest group of people I’ve ever had the privilege to work with.” n

Raised in Berkley, she attended Berkley High School and has spent most of her life in this area. Schlum spent a few years living in California, to experience the beach life and learning how to surf. “It was fun, but I wasn’t any good” she added with a smile. Schlum returned to live in Berkley and, prior to working at Max Broock Realtors in Birmingham, she had been a middle school/high school teacher for over 20 years.

Schlum began her profession in real estate part-time initially, after a friend advised her that there was great potential in it. Just before the Covid19 pandemic, Schlum went into the business full-time.

Favorite aspects of real estate for Schlum include looking at the various homes, gaining ideas, and working with many different clients. “I love the freedom it allows me in my life, the flexible hours, and meeting new people all the time. Also, the unlimited potential it provides, where the

harder I work the more I can get out of it! I particularly enjoy working with first-time homebuyers, walking them through the process step-by-step.”

During the pandemic, Schlum used her time wisely to work on personal growth and also to gain her broker's license. She offers some advice to potential homebuyers, who may be nervous about the current interest rate hikes: Don’t put off buying, as refinancing is always an option. There are also programs in place, such as the seller buying a two-year interest-rate reduction for the buyer, (known as the 2/1 buydown). Additionally, there is still low inventory, so sellers in desirable areas are still seeing positive results. Plus, buyers don’t have to compete with as many other buyers as

Schlum likes to show sellers the inexpensive things they can do to their homes, to maximize their investment. As a seller, she encourages you to perform all the obvious “little fixes” to avoid any possible red flags that a potential buyer may perceive. She advises home sellers to focus on every aspect of affordable preparation, including fresh paint, new/modern fixtures, decluttering, and ‘staging’ work. Landscaping effort pays off, too, in terms of ‘curb appeal’ (for example, tending to bushes and shrubs). Schlum offers a free, no-pressure visit to anyone interested in either buying or selling, “to get the ball rolling. Even if you’re not ready to make

Schlum is certainly enjoying her time at Max Broock, and envisages ramping up her commercial sales more, in combination with residential sales. She also has set a future goal to invest in multi-family housing.

In her home life, Schlum loves taking care of her one-year-old named , and her four-year-old golden retriever named Presley. She is happy to have found a rewarding career where she can balance her

AMICI’S HAD BEEN KNOWN FOR SOME TIME FOR ITS LIST OF SIGNATURE MARTINIS, and it still offers a one-of-a-kind selection, now alongside an upgraded wine list and six Michigan beer options on tap. The restaurant also has specials customers can take advantage of throughout the week on an ongoing basis. Check out their signature cocktails.

The Kenricks love being in the heart of Berkley, which Tim calls “a hidden gem of a neighborhood.” He said, “We have the most loyal regulars who are incredibly supportive. We also have an incredibly talented staff. We’ve created a casual environment with professional and proficient service.”

Amici’s shows its appreciation for the support of Berkley and the surrounding communities by partnering with Affirmations in Ferndale, participating in its telethons and offering a dine to donate event. It also sponsors Berkley school events and has offered a dine to donate for the PTAs of each elementary school. n 3249 W 12 Mile Rd. | www.amiciskitchenandlivingroom.com | 248.544.4100

AND

REOPENED THE RESTAURANT’S DOORS ON JANUARY 2, 2020. THE COUPLE RENAMED THEIR NEW VENTURE AMICI’S KITCHEN & LIVING ROOM TO REFLECT A MENU THAT INCLUDES MUCH MORE THAN PIZZA.

“We updated the interior with an entirely new design, new bar area, sound system and brand-new kitchen equipment,” said Tim, who has been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years and living in Berkley for 20. He explained how the two had originally opened the doors in a “business-as-usual” style. But, ten weeks later, they found themselves in the midst of the pandemic.

“We had to rely heavily on carryout during that time, which was very successful,” he explained. “And people came and ate outside even in the winter. We just had to shift gears and roll with the punches.” Amici’s relied on its patio seating, and during the winter months, the owners put up a tent with heaters inside. While it wasn’t ideal, the pandemic closure allowed the Kenricks to tackle their interior

CASA AMADO TAQUERIA OPENED ITS DOORS IN 2020, RIGHT BEFORE THE PANDEMIC HIT. ORIGINAL PLANS QUICKLY HAD TO CHANGE AND, INSTEAD OF OPENING IN DOWNTOWN DETROIT, ITS OWNERS, CHEF AMADO LOPEZ AND EMILIA JUOCYS, MOVED FAST TO FIND

A NEW LOCATION TO BRING THEIR VISION TO LIFE.

“Everything shifted fast, and we had to find out what the best location was for Casa Amado to grow roots in,” Juocys explained.

It soon become evident that Berkley was the spot they were looking for. Both Lopez and Juocys wanted to bring Casa Amado to a walkable city with an active Chamber of Commerce and a vibrant shopping district close to its schools.

Once a location was nailed down, merging together their strong culinary expertise and business acumen, the two started a from-scratch taqueria which supports local purveyors.

“The significance of the name Casa Amado literally translates to ‘House of Amado’ or House of Love,’ Juocys explained. “‘Amado’ means to be loved. Combined with the logo of the woman, this represents all of the strong women who have influenced our lives.”

NOTHING ON THE EATERY’S MENU IS ARTIFICIAL OR STOREBOUGHT. “Our staff makes everything from real ingredients; we even cut and fry our own chips,” Juocys said. “We feel that the attention to detail in our food brings people back to Casa Amado along with our friendly staff who are always happy to see guests return.”

In addition to a dining room that seats 40 people, the taqueria offers private events for small parties up to 20 in its back dining room. Once a month, it also runs a dinner club, where the dining area is dressed up with tablecloths and glassware. Chef Amado creates a delicious five course meal along with select beverage pairings. There is also a taco truck that pops up around town at local breweries and events. It can be rented for private parties, including those held at residences.

This was Casa Amado’s second year participating in Berkley Restaurant Weekend.

She encourages patrons to come out, adding, “We are a small but mighty team here at Casa Amado. Keep supporting our taqueria, so we can do bigger things in our space. We also have other ideas in mind for our next restaurant concept, but until then, we thank all of you who have come out to try our tacos and help our small business grow.” n 2705 Coolidge Hwy. | casaamado.com | 248.398.3294 | hello@casaamado.com Facebook.com/CasaAmadoDetroit | Instagram.com/Casa_Amado

HAWN WRIGHT & ERIC HITCHCOCK TEAMED UP TO START LITTLE LOU’S HOT CHICKEN AFTER SPENDING FOUR DECADES IN THE INDUSTRY AND HAVING A VISION TO BRING “HOT CHICKEN TO THE MITTEN.”

“I was a chef for a long time in Nashville,” Wright, the company’s General Manager, said. “He and I met and worked together for about five years. We decided we both really like Nashville’s hot chicken – maybe we should do this…”

Combining their professional cooking experience with a love for Southern-fried chicken dishes, the two entrepreneurs created their own special twist on the iconic dish. In early 2021, they purchased a food truck, which was officially rolled out that summer.

“We really got our wheels wet,” Wright joked. “The truck ended up being very popular.”

By the end of the season, he added, “We decided, let’s cruise around and we saw a spot available in Berkley.”

MOVING INTO THE OLD PAPA’S PIZZA SPACE, they quickly began whipping up chef-driven, from- scratch dishes.

“We blend our own flour, create our own sauces. Everything is homemade, Nashville-style,” Wright said.

Being in Berkley has been great for business, according to Wright. “We love the community. We have worked in Berkley. Lived in Berkley. It’s one of the best places to open up where small businesses can grow by word of mouth and the restaurants help each other out.” He added, “We’ve been here for two-and-a-half months. Stop by and check us out!” n

Wise Words For Aging

that could make a fall more likely or lead to impaired cognition. Dr. Pai and her staff always review all prescription medications, OTC medicines and supplements with each patient to make sure that everything on the list is necessary and to minimize the list as much as possible.

IT’S EQUALLY IMPORTANT TO EDUCATE PATIENTS about the need to stay hydrated. “As we age, the hunger and thirst centers in the brain are not as sharp. If you wait to only drink when you’re thirsty, you’ll be at risk of dehydration,” Dr. Pai explains. “Be sure to drink water throughout the day to prevent falls and maintain cognition.” Another way to improve outcomes across the board is to exercise regularly. Even gentle forms of balance, strength and aerobic training help maintain independence.

AGING IS INEVITABLE. SO IS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF BODILY WEAR AND TEAR, ESPECIALLY ON OUR JOINTS. BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT CHANGING HABITS AND BEHAVIORS CAN GO A LONG WAY.

“The goal with our geriatric program has always been to make it easier for seniors to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible,” says Dr. Amita Pai, Medical Director of the Geriatric Evaluation Clinic. The clinic was previously housed within the Beaumont medical complex, but in 2012 it moved to its current standalone location on 12 Mile.

While the senior population has a wide range of concerns and questions, Dr. Pai sees three main issues affecting them: managing multiple medications, avoiding falls, and dealing with challenges related to dementia.

Sometimes the three can overlap – for example, mismanaging medications can cause dizziness

Dr. Pai also advocates for early diagnosis of dementia to help seniors stay independent. The clinic has an on-site social worker who can connect families with community resources and keep their loved ones safely at home for as long as possible. Dr. Pai also makes sure that the needs of the caregiver – in her words, “the patient behind the curtain” – are considered. Seeing the whole picture enables her to make things as easy as possible for her patients, and that’s her ultimate goal. n

NNEWSPAPERS, TV AND RADIO. IT STILL MEANS THOSE THINGS – RADIO IN PARTICULAR HAS EXPERIENCED A RESURGENCE – BUT NOW “MEDIA” ALSO MEANS DIGITAL PUBLICATIONS, PODCASTS, SOCIAL MEDIA, NEWSLETTERS, EVENTS AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT INVOLVES COMMUNICATION IN SOME WAY.

“My husband is a code developer, and he talks about full-stack developers who can do everything. Nowadays I say that we’ve become a fullstack PR agency,” says Jennifer Foster, founder and president of Catalyst Media Factory. Along with booking talent on shows and helping clients maintain their websites, Jennifer and her team write and produce radio scripts, help their clients create podcasts and handle their their collateral

design. They even do online advertising and geofencing. As Jennifer (mildly) puts it, “PR people today have to know an incredible amount of stuff.”

Although you’d never guess it, Jennifer’s first degree was in microbiology – she initially wanted to be a doctor and did viral research at the University of Michigan. But she soon changed her trajectory and went back for another degree, this time in communications. One PR writing class, and she was hooked. After having worked retail through college and getting plenty of experiences in sales, she interned with a PR agency in Metro Detroit and stayed there for 13 years, working her way up to senior vice president.

IN 2016, SHE LEFT TO START CATALYST. Now her agency works with a variety of individual and municipal clients, from promoting films and retail stores to getting the word out about city-wide events like Arts, Beats & Eats in Royal Oak and the Street Art Fest in Berkley. Jennifer characterizes her work as a blend of building relationships, meeting a wide range of people in a wide range of industries and spreading the word about clients in an all-encompassing way.

Ironically, though, despite the need for PR professionals to always be meeting and greeting people, Jennifer says that the best kind of PR firm goes unnoticed to everyone but the client. “We’re like a ninja – we’re behind the scenes and making things happen, and then we put all it out there so that owners can shine the best light on their business.” n

THE

CITY OF

HUNTINGTON WOODS

welcomed Chris Wilson as City Manager early this year. Along with Chris, there are other new faces at City Hall.

Ethan Haan has assumed the role of Finance Director and Treasurer. He is assisted by Deputy Treasurer, Renee Bullen. In addition, the City has added a full-time Community Engagement Officer, Francesco Ferrara. City Hall has also updated the outdoor drop boxes, so residents can more easily drop off bills and ballots.

Community events are in full swing, and with Euchre Parties, Summer Concerts, and Hay Day, there is always something to enjoy in Huntington Woods. Residents celebrated the 4th of July with fireworks over Rackham Golf Course a week of activities, contests, and the Huntington Woods Parade

series continues, covering a wide range of topics. The Library even added a new book club, Vibrant Voices, where residents can read and discuss books written by or about people of color, from the LGBTQ community, immigrants, and anyone else whose voices are often not heard.

THE RECREATION DEPARTMENT CONTINUES PROVIDING FUN TO RESIDENTS. Teen Council resumed in-person meetings while organizing and sponsoring community services and events. Senior programming such as lunch bunch, movies, and the pen pal program continues to connect older residents. The events never stop; keep looking for exciting events throughout the year; information is available by checking the City’s newsletter, the Hometown Herald, and by signing up for the City’s weekly e-blasts at www.hwmi.org

Public Works is working hard to make sure the city’s infrastructure and services are updated. Residents can now enjoy new roads after a construction-heavy summer, brought to you by the additional funds in the general fund after the Public Safety millage was passed. Residents participated in creating art pillars that have been installed throughout the parks.

Be sure to stay up to date on all City happenings by visiting the City’s Facebook Page, e-blast and website. n

BERKLEY IS THE MOST SOUGHT-

AFTER real estate in Metro Detroit. The city’s expanding effort for inclusivity has made it home to more than 15,000 residents and embodies an undeniable urban vibe with beautiful tree-lined streets. Nestled within 2.62 square miles of choice locality surrounding a charming downtown, Berkley has been called one of the best places to raise a family, one of the best suburbs for young professionals, one of the safest cities in Michigan, and, most recently, designated as Michigan’s #1 places to buy a home in Oakland County AND Metro Detroit in 2022.

The City offers a slate of full-service amenities to residents and visitors alike while preserving the warmth of a

small tight-knit town. Residents enjoy living close to beautiful park spaces, attending a variety of city-wide events, exploring a revitalized downtown district, and the walk-ability of a suburban city.

Berkley has become a prime location for both commuters and independent entrepreneurs who have created a unique and charming downtown filled with independent retailers, restaurateurs, and tavern-keepers. With this, our Berkley Downtown Development Authority (DDA) serves as the City’s economic development arm helping new businesses start up and existing businesses thrive and grow in Berkley’s downtown district.

The DDA supports our businesses with grant programs, design support, advertising initiatives, and streetscape improvements, as well as hosting a variety of different events to showcase our vibrant downtown. The DDA district consists of businesses along 12 Mile Road between Coolidge Highway and Greenfield Road, and Coolidge Highway between 11 Mile Road and 12 Mile Road. n
