JUNE - JULY 2023

The month of June is coming to an end and we're entering July, the month of the LAMC, the music conference that brings together thousands of people who enjoy alternative sounds. The Latin Alternative Music Conference takes place in

the city of New York in July, to enjoy the heat of the Big Apple. Roster will once again be present during this year's conference, and we will have images and more articles in upcoming issues. Personally, for me, it's the right forum to learn and discover everything the music industry has to offer.

As you can see, at Roster, we are dedicated to changing the face and content of the magazine. We are opening up the editorial section to give space to all artists who need that extra boost or support. We are also opening up advertising opportunities, and advertising packages are priced at USD 25.00. Roster will continue to promote the MFM+ catalog, but we also want to hear other proposals.

Anyone interested in being part of the editorial department of Roster can contact us at info@rostermagazine.net.

To conclude, we would like to send our sincere condolences to our great artist Inés Gaviria and her entire family for the loss of her aunt and second mother.

Mary Paxanga releases EP “Hood baby”

With one of her most authentic materials yet, Mary Paxanga unveils her new EP titled "Hood Baby". The album consists of 6 trap songs produced in collaboration with D-x Beats, featuring dark and gritty soundscapes. Each track reflects the changes and maturity she has achieved throughout her years in the industry, showcasing the transgressive and poetic nature of trap music

"This is hardcore, and there's nothing like this sound in Spain, a trap album like this, made by a woman in Spain, there isn't... except in Mallorca. I'm very proud of this work, tears fell because I'm finally getting closer to the sound I want to have, although there's still work to be done. I'm very grateful and happy with my producer D-x Beats, we have a great connection."

"Who is Mary Paxanga?

Natalia Linuesa Urbano was born in Mallorca. At the age of 24, she realized that the purpose of her life was in music. Gradually, she created her artistic alter ego, which she named Mary Paxanga. However, she has always emphasized that she remains herself under an artist pseudonym and still wants to be Natalia, but with millions in the pool.

Throughout her successful career, she has managed to captivate with her songs and make an impact with her speeches and criticisms about the current world. Undoubtedly, she is one of the female voices with the most discourse within the Spanish music industry."

And "A primera vista" was born, a song in which she explores, almost in harmony with the soul of this month of May, her experience as a mother after adopting her daughter.

"It's a very personal song," says Gaviria. The lyrics speak about life with her wife and her daughter. "I was nervous. It's like opening the doors wide to my life, but over the years, you become more comfortable with who you are and making the music you want. I'm not interested in creating an artistic persona around my music. Now I'm married (to Alba Lucía Pava), we have our daughter Salomé, and I want people to see who I am."

Precisely, both Alba Lucía and Salomé appear in the video, filmed with images from different periods of the singer's life and other everyday moments of Gaviria with her family.

"I started searching on my phone for recordings, but almost everything was in vertical format. In the end, my mom saved the day because she had some moments recorded in horizontal format with her phone. I used to tease her before, but thank God she never paid attention to me. There were images of the beach and a visit to a park, among others, and they saved the video.

"A primera vista" is beautiful and catchy. "It captures the everydayness of life, how someone comes into your life and changes it, along with the message that families can be different, and the only thing we're focused on is loving our children," says Inés Gaviria, who has already written other songs for her daughter: "Yo me llamo Salomé" and "Pandeyuca pa' mi Salo," her 'little one's' favorite food. And while she prepares more songs, she answered our "Sound Questionnaire."

Do you sing in the shower?

My songs are born in the shower!

(Continue reading: What songs will Alicia Keys sing at her first concert in Colombia?)

An artist you used to imitate as a child?

Emmanuel and his dance in "Toda la vida." I had short hair and imitated him perfectly.

What instrument would you love to play?

The bass guitar.

A concert that had an impact on you?

A recent one: I saw an interpreter named María Cristina Plata, and she amazed me. I was struck by her way of conveying and being an artist, her connection with her fans. She plays Colombian music with a modern twist... Divine!

A place that inspires you?

The sea.

A song that takes you back to your adolescence?

"Pa Pa Pa" by Los Prisioneros.

Do you have any rituals before going on stage?

It's not the healthiest one: I take a mini shot of whiskey to calm my nerves. I can't have a full shot because it dries out my throat.

Do you remember the first album you bought?

It was a cassette tape by Presuntos Implicados: "Ser de agua," which includes the song "Cómo hemos cambiado."

What was your first concert as a professional?

I participated in many festivals and other events, but I would say my first concert was a huge challenge. It was opening for Ricardo Arjona at the time, at the El Campín covered coliseum. It was around 2005 or 2006. I was young, musically speaking; I was experiencing my "first everything," and then... I got booed in front of about ten thousand people!

A sound you adore?

The sound of ocean waves.

And a sound you hate or can't stand?

Car horns, sirens, people honking for everything. It really drives me crazy.

(Read also: Goyo, a great 'Agent of Change.')

Do you have any fears as an artist?

I believe it's always finding the way to continue, adapting to music, times, and life in order to move forward.

Three songs to liven up a party?

One by Carlos Vives. I love "19 de noviembre," it may be old but when I play it, it's amazing. The other one would be "La ventanita" by Sergio Vargas, and "Como la flor" by the Mexican artist Selena.

The song highlights the bravery of Mima, his mother, in seeking a better quality of life by migrating from her beloved homeland.

Cultural roots are a cornerstone of musical creation as they lay the foundation for artists' melodies. It's always a pleasure to discover songs that pay homage to family origins because it allows us to understand the artist's creative core.

In this instance, Cuban singer-songwriter Elsten Torres presents "Bendita Cuba," a Caribbean son that speaks of his Cuban roots and recounts his mother's journey when she left Cuba to seek a better life in New York.

Elsten only lived in Cuba for the first 18 months of his life, but he feels that the island and its culture represent an important part of his being. The composition was created to honor the courage of Mima, his mother, in seeking a better quality of life for her family by migrating from her beloved homeland. Nowadays, at 85 years old, Mima continues to enjoy life alongside Elsten.

"Bendita Cuba" was written with the assistance of producer and composer Rodolfo Castillo, a vital figure in Elsten Torres' growth as a musician.

"Rodolfo was the one who discovered me when I had just arrived from Miami to New York in the '90s. I started my professional career with him, and without his support, I wouldn't have come this far in my musical career. It's beautiful that after so many years, we continue to create together and have become like family," expressed Elsten Torres. At the same time, "Bendita Cuba" showcases Elsten's most important musical influences such as guaguancó, guaracha, and timba.

Elsten Torres is a pioneer of the Latin Alternative Rock movement that emerged in the late '90s in the United States, and he is one of the leading voices in the bilingual artistic community of South Florida.

The most important lesson he has learned throughout his career is to be humble, not to believe that he is better or more talented, but simply to show what makes him different.

Elsten Torres believes he has the great ability to convey what he feels in his heart and that inspiration doesn't have to be sought far away; it only requires opening one's eyes to discover new songs.

Meïa Santiago concludes an addictive love in "I Can't Stay Away From You."

In 2021, Meïa Santiago released Stoop n°6, her first EP since moving from Barcelona to New York three years ago. The EP includes two of her own songs: "Angels in New York City" and "Down by the Water," as well as two covers: "My Flame" and "Rats." The EP was sponsored by Paradise Hill Productions management.

Meïa arrived in New York as a result of a scholarship and an award for her song "Be Gentle My Love" from her previous EP, Mülzien 25, produced by Dani Vega, guitarist of the well-known Spanish pop-rock band Mishima. The award was granted by the monthly film festival "Aphrodite Film Awards New York City" in the category of Best Musical Piece in 2018.

Meïa Santiago premiered the first single from the EP, "Angels in New York City," which includes a spoken tribute to the famous Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, in the winter of 2020. She cowrote this song with composer and singer Itaal Shur, who has been awarded a Grammy and has produced and written for several albums by artist Maxwell. He also won a Grammy for the song "Smooth" that he wrote for Santana.

"My Flame" is a song by the recently deceased and great artist Bobby Caldwell, released in 1978. Meïa has partially translated it into Spanish.

Meïa also has an album called Lighthouse with the Spanish record label Picap, with whom she signed a three-year artist agreement. She also received an award in 2018 for the music video of "Beyond the Angle of Horror" (Meïa's song dedicated to photojournalist Leila Alaoui, who was killed in a terrorist attack), obtained at the Pinnacle Film Awards in California.

Malaspina

Malaspina, a Punk Rock band with influences and hints of Hard Rock, is an emerging group that directs their music towards a much fresher and younger audience than the traditional punk scene. While the punk genre originated in the 70s with bands like Sex Pistols, Ramones, and The Clash, it has evolved and merged with Pop, resulting in unique sounds like that of Malaspina

Mary Paxanga

Mary Paxanga, a Spanish artist from Palma de Mallorca, defines her music and sound within the genre of Neo Punk Latino, with hints of Dark Reggaeton. And she has certainly hit the mark, as her unique proposal is not commonly heard in Latin America, where reggaeton is predominantly popular, but rather in Europe and the United States. It's a beautiful and fresh musical approach that she brings to the table.
