UN NUEVO PASO A NEW STEP Con este número de nuestra revista, el decimoquinto, damos un nuevo e importante paso en su difusión. A partir de ahora, su coedición en inglés nos va a permitir llegar a pacientes y amigos de otras lenguas que nos habían hecho sugerencias en este sentido, y así completar la atención médica que se presta hoy día a un número creciente de personas que provienen de otros países.

Con regularidad creciente recibimos pacientes de distintas nacionalidades como Francia, Portugal, Italia o Rusia. No pocos de América Central y del Sur hace ya tiempo que nos confían sus problemas oculares.

También de otros continentes, como África y Asia, han empezado a visitarnos regularmente.

Este incremento supone un estímulo para nuestra organización e impulsa, como decíamos, que nuestra revista les dé satisfacción con su traducción al inglés.

Sin duda supone un esfuerzo adicional, pero es también prueba del éxito de un proyecto que nació en 2008 y que se ha consolidado gracias a sus lectores y a la confianza depositada en esta iniciativa por los anunciantes.

Es lugar común que un mundo global aconseja respuestas de ese orden.

En el Instituto, con modestia, pero también con rigor y cautela, no queremos quedar al margen de esa realidad y de forma progresiva vamos sentando las bases para ello. Vega sigue así los pasos que en esta dirección se han dado ya en nuestra página web y en las redes sociales con las que nos comunicamos con nuestros pacientes, los verdaderos destinatarios de estas iniciativas.

With this issue of our journal, the fifteenth, we take a new and important step to further enhance its dissemination. From now on, its co-publication in English will enable us to reach patients and friends who speak other languages and who had made suggestions in this sense. We can thus complete the healthcare that it’s currently being provided to an increasing number of people from other countries.

We regularly receive patients from different nationalities such as France, Portugal, Italy or Russia.

For a long time now, many patients from Central and South America have been entrusting their eye care to us. Patients from other continents (Africa and Asia) have come to visit us regularly too.

This increase means an important incentive for our organisation and, as we mentioned before, the journal will drive patient satisfaction with this translation into English.

It certainly requires an additional effort, but it is also proof of the success of a project that begun in 2008 and that has been consolidated thanks to its readers and to the trust that advertisers have vested in this initiative.

It is common knowledge that a global world requires this kind of responses. At the Institute, modestly, but also rigorously and carefully, we don’t want to remain on the sidelines of this reality and we are progressively laying the foundations. Vega thus follows the footsteps that have already been taken in our web page and in the social networks that we use to communicate with our patients, the true recipients of these initiatives.

El Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega, Presidente de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología recibe el Premio a la Excelencia Sanitaria de manos del Presidente de la Comunidad de Madrid, D. Ignacio González.

El Instituto Europeo de la Salud reconoce la labor del Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega con el premio a la Excelencia Sanitaria El director médico del Instituto, el Prof. Luis FernándezVega, ha sido reconocido con el premio a la Excelencia Sanitaria que concede el Instituto Europeo de la Salud y Bienestar Social, como centro colaborador de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, y que reconoce la labor realizada por personalidades que son referentes en la búsqueda de la calidad y la excelencia sanitaria en cada uno de sus respectivos ámbitos profesionales.

En el acto, celebrado tras el “Foro sobre hipertensión arterial, diabetes y educación terapéutica de los pacientes”, participó un centenar de personalidades del ámbito sanitario, político y empresarial.

Este Premio a la Excelencia Sanitaria también ha sido recibido por los doctores Josep Redón, Presidente de la Sociedad Europea de Hipertensión; Ángel Villamor, Director Médico de la Clínica iQtra Medicina Avanzada en Madrid y Valentín Fuster, Director General del Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares.

La participación de sus profesionales en foros de relevancia nacional e internacional, la labor desempeñada por la Fundación Fernández-Vega, los avances de la Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica y su puesta en común en charlas, seminarios y cursos, más allá de sus funciones clínicas e investigadoras, han llevado en más de una ocasión al Instituto a merecer la atención de los medios de comunicación. A continuación detallamos algunas de las más recientes, así como de los reconocimientos que la generosidad ajena ha querido concedernos.

EL Dr. Luis Fernández-Vega Cueto, premio Joaquín Rutllán El doctor Luis Fernández-Vega Cueto se ha alzado con el primer premio internacional Joaquín Rutllán, concedido por el Instituto Barraquer, por su trabajo titulado “¿Qué sabemos hoy de la coriorretinopatía central serosa?”, que será publicado en la revista Anales del instituto oftalmológico catalán.

Este galardón fue instituido en homenaje a la memoria del Dr. Joaquín Rutllán, secretario ejecutivo del Instituto Barraquer, fallecido en 1994, y reconoce el mejor trabajo sobre un tema de libre elección relacionado con la Oftalmología de entre todos los presentados por médicos españoles y extranjeros menores de 45 años.

Luis Fernández-Vega Cueto, miembro de la quinta generación de la saga oftalmológica asturiana cuyo apellido lleva, recogió el premio el pasado mes de marzo en la reunión anual de la Junta General Ordinaria del Instituto Barraquer, donde también se entregaron el segundo y el tercer premio, que fueron a parar a profesionales de Italia y de Perú.

La Fundación ARVO distingue al Prof. Carlos Belmonte La Fundación ARVO para la investigación ocular y la Dowling Society, de Estados Unidos, ha concedido su premio 2013 al Prof. Carlos Belmonte en reconocimiento a “sus destacadas contribuciones a la investigación ocular y la Oftalmología”. El director científico e investigador principal de la Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica (FIO), que tiene su sede en el Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega, recibió el premio a principios de mayo, en Seattle (EE.UU), durante el congreso anual de ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophtalmology), que reúne a más de 10.000 investigadores de todo el mundo de los distintos campos de estudio de la visión y que está considerado el encuentro profesional más importante del ámbito de la Oftalmología.

Este galardón se suma a los muchos cosechados por el que fuera fundador del Instituto de Neurociencias, entre los que destacan el Premio de Investigación Rey Jaime I, el Premio Nacional de Investigación en Medicina Gregorio Marañón y la Cátedra Severo Ochoa, así como el Endre Balazs de investigación ocular y el European Vision Award.

La revista Ejecutivos distingue al Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega con el premio a la excelencia empresarial Es esta la tercera edición de estos premios que, promovidos por la revista Ejecutivos, se lleva a cabo en Asturias.

The European Institute for Health recognises the work of Prof Luis Fernández-Vega with the Healthcare Excellence award The medical director of the Institute, Prof Luis Fernández-Vega has been recognised with the Healthcare Excellence award granted by the European Institute for Health and Social Welfare, as a collaborating centre with the World Health Organisation, which recognises the work done by professionals considered a point of reference in terms of searching for quality and excellence in healthcare in each of their respective professional fields.

About 100 eminent personalities from the healthcare, political and business fields attended the event, which followed the “Forum on high blood pressure, diabetes and therapeutic education for patients”.

La Obra Social “la Caixa” colabora con la FIO para estudiar enfermedades de la córnea El presidente de la Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica, Luis Fernández-Vega; el director territorial de CaixaBank, José Manuel Bilbao Kamio; y el apoderado de la entidad financiera, Francisco Suárez García, han firmado un convenio para colaborar en un estudio clínico y experimental sobre enfermedades de la córnea.

Merced a este convenio, la Obra Social “La Caixa” destina 30.000 euros para el desarrollo de un estudio sobre el queratocono, patología genética que afecta a la córnea y que representa la primera causa de queratoplastia (trasplante de córnea) entre los jóvenes.

The ARVO foundation bestows an honour on Prof Carlos Belmonte ARVO, the association for research in vision, and the Dowling Society, from the USA, awarded their 2013 prize to Prof Carlos Belmonte in recognition of his “remarkable contributions to research in vision and to ophthalmology”. The scientific director and principal researcher at the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega received the prize in early May in Seattle (USA) during the ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophtalmology) Annual Meeting, which brings together over 10,000 researchers from all over the world and from all the different areas of vision research; it is considered the most important professional gathering in the field of Ophthalmology.

Los afectados por esta enfermedad, de rápida progresión, carecen de una visión útil para las tareas más sencillas y ven limitada su calidad de vida, ya que las terapias actuales no consiguen revertir los efectos del queratocono.

El estudio clínico y experimental está liderado por la Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica (FIO), vinculada al Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega. El equipo investigador, con amplia experiencia en la investigación básica y clínica de las alteraciones corneales, está dirigido por el Dr. Jesús Merayo Lloves.

Luis Fernández-Vega destacó “el enorme valor social de la investigación” y agradeció el compromiso de la entidad financiera en momentos como los actuales, marcados por los recortes económicos.

Por su parte, José Manuel Bilbao hizo hincapié en cómo la Obra Social “La Caixa” invierte en Asturias un porcentaje sustancialmente superior al que se derivaría de su actividad bancaria y resaltó las actividades asistenciales que viene llevando a cabo, así como las de carácter medioambiental y su satisfacción por sumar ahora las de investigación básica a través del convenio suscrito con la Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica.

On this occasion, the jury has decided to grant the award for Business Excellence to Professor Luis Fernández-Vega on behalf of the Institute. Gonzalo Macías, the manager of the Institute, received the prize in an event presided by the Minister for Economic Affairs and Employment and attended by a broad representation of the regional business world; it took place at the Ayre Hotel in Oviedo.

Within this agreement, the Obra Social “la Caixa” allotted 30,000 euros to the development of a study on keratoconus, a genetic pathology that affects the cornea and that represents the main cause of keratoplasty (cornea transplant) amongst young people.

Those affected by this condition, of rapid progression, lack a useful vision to perform the simplest tasks and experience a poor quality of life, as current therapies aren’t able to revert the effects of keratoconus.

The Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica (FIO), linked to the Instituto Oftalmológico FernándezVega, leads this clinical and experimental trial. The research team, with a vast experience on basic and clinical research on the alterations of the cornea, is headed by Dr Jesús Merayo Lloves.

Luis Fernández-Vega pointed out “the enormous social value of this research” and thanked the commitment of the financial entity in times like this, marked by economic cutbacks.

III Curso de actualización en técnicas prácticas en cirugía plástica ocular

El Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega organizó en el mes de mayo el tercer curso de actualización Técnicas Prácticas en Cirugía Plástica Ocular, en el que se llevó a cabo un exhaustivo repaso a las técnicas más habituales de esta subespecialidad, cada día más demandada, de la mano de prestigiosos especialistas del panorama nacional e internacional.

El Dr. Frank Nesi, director de uno de los mejores programas de formación en Oculoplastia en Estados Unidos, y el Dr. César Sierra, profesor de la Universidad de Yale, así como ponentes nacionales de los más prestigiosos centros oftalmológicos, abordaron durante dos días las últimas novedades en el tratamiento de las patologías orbitarias, de los párpados, vías lagrimales y los tratamientos con fines puramente estéticos como la blefaroplastia, lifting medio facial, lifting de las cejas y el uso de la toxina botulínica por el oftalmólogo.

Para complementar las charlas, se llevó a cabo una sesión de cirugía en directo desde los quirófanos del Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega, donde se realizaron varias intervenciones quirúrgicas de las patologías más frecuentes y donde los asistentes participaron activamente, realizando preguntas en directo a los cirujanos sobre determinados pasos de las técnicas utilizadas.

For his part, José Manuel Bilbao stressed how the Obra Social ‘La Caixa’ invests in Asturias a considerably higher percentage than what would derive of its banking activity and highlighted the welfare activities that it has carried out, as well as its environmental activities and his satisfaction on adding now those of basic research through the agreement entered into with the Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica.

III Updating course on practical techniques in ophthalmic plastic surgery The Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega organised last May the third updating course Practical Techniques in Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery, where the most common techniques of this subspecialty –increasingly in demand- were exhaustively reviewed both by national and international prestigious specialists.

Dr Frank Nesi, Director of one of the best training programs in Oculoplasty in the USA, and Dr César Sierra, professor at the prestigious Yale University, as well as national panellists from the most prestigious ophthalmology centres, addressed for two days the latest developments in the treatment of orbital, palpebral and tear duct pathologies, as well as purely cosmetic treatments like blepharoplasty, mid-face lift, eyebrow lift and the ophthalmologist’s use of botulinum toxin.

To complement these lectures, a live surgery session was performed from the operating theatres at the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega.

Several procedures of the most common pathologies were carried out and the attendees were able to participate actively, asking live questions to the surgeons on certain steps of the techniques that were being used.

The course, led by the head of the Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery at the Institute, Dr Javier Fernández-Vega Sanz, is included in the Continuous Training Program of Universidad de Oviedo.

El curso, que estuvo dirigido por el encargado del departamento de Cirugía Plástica Ocular del Instituto, el Dr. Javier Fernández-Vega Sanz, está incluido en el programa de Formación Continuada de la Universidad de Oviedo.

El Instituto, en el “XXI curso Panamericano de Oftalmología” El Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega, director médico del Instituto; el Dr. Álvaro Fernández-Vega, subdirector médico; y el Dr. José F. Alfonso Sánchez, coordinador de investigación clínica y jefe de la Unidad de Cirugía de Córnea, Cristalino y Refractiva, participaron el pasado mes de abril en el “XXI Curso Panamericano de Oftalmología” de la Sociedad Panamericana de Oftalmología (PAAO) y la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología (SEO), que se celebró en Santiago de Compostela.

Concretamente, el Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega presentó allí las comunicaciones “Intercambio de lentes intraoculares”, “Óptica y diseño de las lentes multifocales difractivas” y “Capsulotomía anterior con láser de Femtosegundo”, además de coordinar el módulo “Facoemulsificación y emetropía”.

Por su parte, el Dr. Álvaro Fernández-Vega pronunció la relativa a “Mácula en cúpula”, mientras que el Dr. José F. Alfonso Sánchez coordinó “Queratoplastias” y presentó “Queratoplastia protegida por pseudocámara”, “Fenotipo de queratocono para implante de anillos intracorneales” y “Cataratas en lentes epicapsulares de colámero”.

El encuentro, que tuvo lugar en el Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de la capital gallega durante los días 26 y 27 de abril, reunió a cerca de setecientos expertos europeos y americanos para intercambiar avances científicos y tecnológicos, así como actualizar conocimientos.

XIII congreso Sevilla refractiva El director médico del Instituto, el Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega, y el Dr. José F. Alfonso Sánchez –jefe de la Unidad de Cirugía de Córnea, Cristalino y Refractiva- participaron en el congreso “XIII Sevilla Refractiva” que se celebró en la capital andaluza los días 11, 12 y 13 de abril.

Concretamente, el Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega diserto sobre “Láser de Femtosegundo en cirugía refractiva del cristalino”, mientras que el Dr. José F. Alfonso lo hizo sobre la “Situación de la presbicia en España”.

El congreso, que ha sido considerado como curso de interés científico sanitario por la Junta de Andalucía, incluyó cirugía en directo, lo que ha sido posible mediante comunicaciones con los quirófanos bidireccionales y simultáneas.

This meeting took place at the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones in Santiago de Compostela on April 26 and 27; it gathered close to seven hundred European and American experts to exchange scientific and technological advances, as well as to update their knowledge.

XIII refractive Seville conference The medical director at the Institute, Prof Luis Fernández-Vega, and Dr José F. Alfonso Sánchez –head of the Cornea, Crystalline and Refractive Surgery Unit at the Institute- participated in the conference “XIII Sevilla Refractiva” that took place in the Andalusian capital on April 11, 12 and 13.

Specifically, Prof Luis Fernández-Vega made a presentation on “Femtosecond laser in refractive surgery of the crystalline” and Dr José F. Alfonso on the “Condition of presbyopia in Spain”.

This professional meeting, which has been declared of scientific and medical Interest by the regional government of Andalusia, included live surgery; this was achieved through bidirectional and simultaneous communications with the operating theatres.

Sampedro y Mario Arias, junto al diputado en la Junta General del Principado Alfonso Román, visitaron las instalaciones del Instituto, donde recibieron una amplia explicación de las principales características del éste y la evolución habida desde la clínica de la calle Uría de Oviedo hasta las actuales instalaciones del monte Naranco, que ocupan más de 15.000 metros cuadrados.

Esta delegación del Partido Popular prestó especial atención, por lo singular y novedoso, a la Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica, una iniciativa con muy pocos precedentes en el ámbito privado europeo que supone una decidida apuesta por la investigación básica y cuya contribución a la curación de enfermedades que aún hoy no tienen una respuesta satisfactoria constituye su gran reto.

Los investigadores principales, Carlos Belmonte y Jesús Merayo, expusieron las características de las cuatro principales áreas de trabajo de una fundación que goza, pese a su corta andadura, de un prestigio creciente en su ámbito.

A comprehensive delegation of the asturian PP visits the Institute Last June 11, the president of the asturian PP Mercedes Fernández, accompanied by senators Isidro Fernández Rozada, Laura Sampedro and Mario Arias, together with the legislator at the Council of the Principality Alfonso Román, visited the facilities of the Institute, where they received a broad explanation of its main characteristics and its evolution from the practice located at Uría street in Oviedo to the current facilities at mount Naranco, which occupy an area of over 15,000 square meters.

This delegation from the PP paid special attention, for its singularity and innovation, to the Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica, an initiative with few precedents in the European private setting, representing a commitment to basic research, and which faces the great challenge of contributing to the treatment of diseases that still lack a satisfactory response.

La Fundación Fernández-Vega comprueba la tensión ocular de medio millar de personas en el Día Mundial del glaucoma La Fundación Fernández-Vega, consciente de la importancia de diagnosticar el glaucoma a tiempo y coincidiendo con el Día Mundial de esta enfermedad, comprobó la tensión ocular de forma gratuita a más de 500 personas, de las cuales a un ocho por ciento se le detectaron valores por encima de los que se consideran normales.

Para ello, la Fundación instaló una carpa durante toda la jornada en las inmediaciones del teatro Campoamor, en Oviedo, donde se midió la presión intraocular de todo aquel que lo deseara de forma rápida y sencilla.

Además, el Dr. Pedro Pablo Rodríguez Calvo ofreció una conferencia para acercar esta enfermedad a la sociedad e incidir en la importancia de un diagnóstico precoz, ya que, aseguró, el más común de los distintos tipos de glaucoma no da síntomas hasta que ya está muy avanzado.

El glaucoma, segunda causa de ceguera en el mundo, es una enfermedad degenerativa que origina un daño paulatino en el nervio óptico. Se trata de una afección crónica y progresiva que se caracteriza por una creciente pérdida de las células nerviosas de la retina, a lo que se une la aparición y desarrollo de defectos en el campo visual. En la mayoría de los casos, esta patología se asocia a un aumento de la presión intraocular (PIO).

El Dr. Rodríguez Calvo explicó que, al tratarse de una dolencia asintomática, más del cincuenta por ciento de afectados en países desarrollados y del noventa en zonas subdesarrolladas desconocen que padecen esta enfermedad que, sin embargo, afecta al 15 por ciento de las personas mayores de 85 años en todo el mundo y que causa el 20 por ciento de los casos de ceguera en Europa.

The Fundación Fernández-Vega monitored the ocular pressure of five hundred people throughout the World glaucoma day The Fundación Fernández-Vega, acutely aware of the importance of diagnosing glaucoma on time and coinciding with the World Day of this condition, monitored, free of charge, the eye pressure of over 500 people; higher-than-normal values were detected on 8% of patients.

To this end, the Foundation placed a tent throughout the day in the vicinity of the theatre Campoamor, in Oviedo, where they quickly and easily monitored the intraocular pressure of anyone who requested it.

Furthermore, Dr Pedro Pablo Rodríguez Calvo gave a lecture to bring society closer to this disease and to insist on the importance of an early diagnosis because, as he stated, the most common of all types of glaucoma is asymptomatic until the disease is very advanced.

Glaucoma is the second cause of blindness in the world; it is a degenerative disease that causes gradual damage to the optic nerve. It is a chronic and progressive disease characterised by a growing loss of the nerve cells of the retina, compounded with the apparition and development of defects in the visual field. In the majority of cases, this pathology is associated to an increased intraocular pressure (IOP).

La Fundación colabora con las Hermanitas de ancianos desamparados de Oviedo y con la Asociación Nora Un equipo de oftalmólogos y optometristas de la Fundación FernándezVega se desplazó en abril hasta la residencia Nuestra Señora del Rosario, de las Hermanitas de Ancianos Desamparados de Oviedo, para ofrecer a sus residentes, de edades comprendidas entre los 70 y los 93 años, una revisión general de su salud ocular.

Durante la consulta, se detectaron diversas patologías como cataratas o problemas oculares asociados a la diabetes.

Las Hermanitas de Ancianos Desamparados son una congregación religiosa que acoge, cuida y prodiga todo género de asistencia a los ancianos necesitados.

Un mes después, a mediados de mayo, un equipo de la Fundación se acudió a Pola de Siero para revisar la salud ocular de una treintena de personas –en su mayoría niños- de la Asociación Nora, una asociación sin ánimo de lucro que, desde 1992, apoya a personas con parálisis cerebral, discapacidad psíquica y síndromes afines para intentar mejorar su calidad de vida.

Allí, los profesionales de la Fundación Fernández-Vega practicaron revisiones de graduación, de fondo de ojo y polo posterior en una acción asistencial que se enmarca dentro del programa de actuación de la Fundación, entre cuyos fines se incluye la prestación de servicio oftalmológico a colectivos con algún tipo de dificultad. Una labor, tanto en España como en el extranjero, que solo es posible gracias al trabajo de los profesionales y recursos del Instituto y a la ayuda de otras entidades y colaboradores anónimos.

Dr Rodríguez Calvo explained that, being an asymptomatic condition, over 50% of those affected in developed countries and 90% in developing countries are unaware of suffering this disease that, nevertheless, affects 15% of people over the age of 85 across the world and that is responsible for 20% of the cases of blindness in Europe.

The Foundation collaborates with the Little sisters of the neglected elderly in Oviedo and with asociación Nora A team of ophthalmologists and optometrists from the Fundación Fernández-Vega visited last April the old people’s home “Nuestra Señora del Rosario” of the Little Sisters of the Neglected Elderly in Oviedo so that their residents –between the ages of 70 and 93could undergo a general eye health screening. Several pathologies like cataracts or eye conditions associated to diabetes were observed.

The Little Sisters of the Neglected Elderly are a religious congregation whose aim is to take in, take care and give all kinds of assistance to the elderly in need.

One month later, in the middle of May, a team from the Foundation visited Pola de Siero so that some 30 members of Asociación NORA –mainly children- could undergo a general eye health screening.

NORA is a non-profit making association established in 1992; it supports people with brain paralysis, psychic impairment and similar syndromes to try to improve their quality of life.

Over there, professionals from the Fundación Fernández -Vega performed visual grading, ocular fundus and posterior pole check-ups in a medical activity framed in the action plan of the Fundación Fernández-Vega; its goals include providing ophthalmological services to collectives with some kind of impairment. The work done by the foundation –both in Spain and abroad- can be carried out thanks to the work of the professionals and the resources of the Institute, as well as the help of other entities and anonymous collaborators.

La Fundación Fernández-Vega, en Perú Un equipo de la Fundación formado por el Dr. Tomás Parra y la óptico-optometrista Henar Morchón se desplazó del 28 de junio al 9 de julio a la ciudad de Ayacucho, también conocida como Huamanga, para colaborar con la asociación Ayudando a Caminar con Covadonga en Perú (ACOVAPERU), en una campaña aprobada y coordinada por la secretaria de la Fundación Fernández-Vega, Dª Victoria Cueto-Felgueroso.

Esta asociación está dirigida por la Hermana Estrella Valcárcel Muñiz, natural de Asturias y más conocida como la Madre Covadonga, misionera dominica que lleva en Ayacucho más de 62 años trabajando con personas en riesgo de exclusión, así como ayudando a personas discapacitadas o con problemas de visión.

La Fundación atendió durante su estancia a más de 500 pacientes, procedentes de Ayacucho y sus alrededores, en el Hospital Regional de Huamanga. Para tratar las enfermedades oculares de la población, la expedición llevó consigo todo tipo de material oftalmológico, como gafas, colirios, medicamentos, etc, así como lentes intraoculares para la realización de cirugías de cataratas.

The Instituto Fernández-Vega, present at ARVO 2013 Several professionals from the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega and the Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica –FIO- participated in early May in the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophtalmology, ARVO, the most important professional gathering in the field of ophthalmology, which this year took place in Seattle, USA. The representatives of the Institute met other great specialists from all over the world to focus on “life-changing research”, the proposed approach for this year by the organising association, which brings together 13,000 researchers from approximately 80 different countries.

Specifically, the Instituto Fernández-Vega participated with research in corneal innervation, keratoconus, regenerative medicine and studies of peptides in the eyes.

Significada presencia del Instituto en SECOIR Una nutrida representación de profesionales del Instituto se desplazó a Barcelona en mayo para asistir al vigésimo octavo congreso anual de la Sociedad Española de Cirugía Ocular Implanto Refractiva, SECOIR, que actualmente preside el Dr. José F. Alfonso Sánchez, jefe de la unidad de Cirugía de Córnea, Cristalino y Refractiva del IOFV. En su calidad de presidente, el Dr. José F. Alfonso inauguró el congreso y llevó a cabo múltiples presentaciones y ponencias, así como participaciones en diversos simposios. También ocupó un lugar destacado el director médico del Instituto, el Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega, que participó asimismo en la inauguración oficial como presidente de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología (SEO) y realizó varias presentaciones y ponencias, además de dirigir un curso sobre cristalino y moderar un encuentro sobre cirugía de la catarata.

El Dr. Jesús Merayo Lloves, coordinador de la unidad clínica de superficie e inflamación ocular del Instituto, acudió también a la cita anual donde abordó temas relacionados con la disfunción lagrimal o con el queratocono y moderó un simposio sobre terapias regenerativas de superficie, mientras que José I. The third poster presented by the Institute under the title “Combination of intracorneal ring segments in the care of patients with keratoconus” is the result of the collaboration between Dr Jesús Merayo and the coordinator of clinical research at the Institute, Dr José F. Significant presence of the Institute at SECOIR A large number of professionals from the Institute went to Barcelona last May to attend the twentyeighth session of the annual conference of the Spanish Society of Ocular Implants and Refractive Surgery (SECOIR), currently chaired by Dr José F. Alfonso Sánchez, head of the cornea, crystalline and refractive surgery unit at IOFV. In his capacity as president, Dr José F. Alfonso inaugurated the conference and gave numerous presentations and lectures; he also participated in several symposiums. The medical director of the Institute, Prof Luis Fernández-Vega, also occupied a prominent place; he participated in the official inauguration as president of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology (SEO), gave multiple presentations and lectures, headed a course on crystalline and chaired a meeting on cataract surgery.

2013 PROMOTION AWARD ASTURIAN CUSINE La asociación de restaurantes de Fomento de la Cocina Asturiana celebró su trigésimo tercer aniversario distinguiendo con su premio de 2013 al Instituto y a su Fundación en el transcurso de un encuentro en el que Luis Fernández-Vega agradeció efusivamente el reconocimiento a todos los asistentes, y que contó con la intervención del presidente de la Academia Asturiana de Gastronomía y colaborador de esta revista, Eduardo Méndez Riestra. A continuación compartimos con los lectores de Vega lo más destacado de un acto que nos llena de satisfacción y gratitud.

Hace más de tres décadas que un grupo de profesionales dedicados a la restauración decidieron promocionar en Madrid la cocina asturiana a través de unas jornadas gastronómicas. Sin saberlo, estaban gestando el germen de lo que se convertiría en la Asociación de Restaurantes de Fomento de la Cocina Asturiana, que lleva desde entonces trabajando para promocionar la gastronomía del Principado y dar a conocer la variedad y la calidad de sus materias primas.

The restaurant association Promoting Asturian Cuisine celebrated its thirty-third anniversary awarding the Institute and its Foundation its 2013 prize during an event in which Luis Fernández-Vega effusively thanked all the attendees this recognition; it included the intervention of the President of the Asturian Academy of Gastronomy and collaborator of this journal, Eduardo Méndez Riestra.

Junto a diversas publicaciones, actividades de desarrollo y promoción profesionales, colaboraciones con las instituciones públicas o con otras entidades y asociaciones, esta agrupación creó un premio que persigue reconocer la labor y el esfuerzo de otras entidades que también contribuyen a la difusión de Asturias y de su gastronomía. En esta ocasión, el reconocimiento de la edición de 2013 fue a parar a las manos del Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega por la contribución del Instituto al sostenimiento de su actividad, gracias a los miles de pacientes que visitan el Principado para tratar sus problemas oculares, así como en reconocimiento a la labor solidaria de la Fundación Fernández-Vega.

Un galardón que el director médico del Instituto agradeció “de todo corazón” en nombre de los casi doscientos profesionales que conforman el Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega y que se comprometió a llevar con orgullo “con el deseo de que nos sirva en nuestra tarea, con la que procuraremos seguir contribuyendo al sostenimiento y mejora de una actividad tan fundamental como es la magnífica restauración” que simboliza Fomento de la Cocina Asturiana.

Así, el director médico del Instituto explicó a los presentes cómo la inmensa mayoría de los pacientes que acuden a la clínica para tratar sus problemas

Over thirty years ago a group of professionals in the catering trade decided to promote asturian cuisine in Madrid through a series of gastronomic days. Without realising it, they were planting the seed for the eventual the Restaurant Association Promoting Asturian Cuisine, which has been working to promote the gastronomy of the Principality and to make known the diversity and quality of its raw materials ever since.

Along with several publications, professional promotion and development activities, collaborations with the different public institutions or other entities and associations, this grouping of professionals established a prize aiming to acknowledge the hard work and effort of other entities that also contribute to the dissemination of Asturias and its gastronomy. On this occasion, the recognition of the edition of 2013 went to Prof Luis Fernández-Vega for the support given by the Institute to this activity –thanks to the thousands of patients that visit the Principality to treat their eye conditions- and in recognition of the charitable work carried out by the Fundación Fernández-Vega.

A prize that the medical director of the Institute thanked wholeheartedly on behalf of the approximately 200 professionals that form the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega; a prize that he promised to hold with pride “wishing it to help us with our work, with which we will try to keep contributing to the support and improvement of a paramount activity such as excellent catering” as symbolised by Promoting Asturian Cuisine.

Prof Luis Fernández-Vega shared with those present his love for good regional cuisine, which he defined as “much more than a means to feed us. It is also an instrument to enjoy, to learn, to share… In short, to live.” And, in the case of asturian gastronomy, to attract to the Principality all those who’ve had the opportunity to try it. The medical director of the Institute thus explained to those present how the majority of patients who visit the practice to treat their eye problems and who aren’t from Asturias, not only go back home satisfied with their diagnosis, but

Algo que no es de extrañar, a su juicio, ya que la gastronomía asturiana ha conseguido mantener una “evolución desde la tradición a la modernidad sin perder las esencias o conjugando sabiamente ambas, trasformándose en una embajadora de excepción de lo mejor de Asturias”, alabó el galardonado.

De hecho, destacó cómo la labor y el trabajo tanto del Instituto como de la Asociación Fomento de la Cocina Asturiana ponen de manifiesto que desde el Principado se pueden acometer actividades de referencia y, por tanto, de éxito, siempre y cuando se aborden guiados por los principios de búsqueda de la excelencia y del servicio al paciente o, en su caso, al cliente. Unos valores que rigen tanto la actividad de la Asociación que

Values that govern both the activity of the Association that grants the award and that of the honouree, who was particularly pleased to receive an award from a collective unconnected to the scientific societies relevant to his specialty.

No en vano, el Instituto y la Asociación Fomento de la Cocina Asturiana van de la mano en la promoción de los manjares culinarios del llamado Paraíso Natural, ya que de las más de cien mil personas que depositan cada año su confianza en el quehacer profesional del Instituto, aproximadamente el 60 por ciento proceden de fuera de Asturias e, incluso, de otros países, lo que supone asimismo, recordó Fernández-Vega, un efecto dinamizador de la hotelería, la hostelería, el comercio, los transportes y, en definitiva, el sector servicios. Un efecto que se ve multiplicado por el hecho de que la mayor parte acuden acompañados y, en ocasiones, o bien prolongan su estancia o bien deciden conocer mejor esta tierra en sus períodos vacacionales.

La Asociación, que suma ya 33 años de vida, fue glosada por el presidente de la Academia Asturiana de Gastronomía y colaborador de esta revista, Eduardo Méndez Riestra, quien destacó el trabajo de estos profesionales por potenciar y proyectar la imagen de nuestra mejor gastronomía tanto dentro como fuera de la comunidad autónoma, “algo más que conseguido”, así como “fomentar una auténtica hermandad presidida por ejemplar compañerismo y camaradería para estar todos a la cabeza”.

En el acto, en el que estuvieron presentes el alcalde de Oviedo, Agustín Iglesias Caunedo; la alcaldesa de Avilés, Pilar Varela; el de Carreño, Ángel Riego; y distintos responsables empresariales e institucionales de la región, se repasaron también algunos de los nombres que han marcado la gastronomía asturiana dentro y fuera de las fronteras del Principado, con un recuerdo especial a Víctor Bango –Vitorón-, recientemente fallecido.

Not for nothing, the Institute and the Association Promoting Asturian Cuisine go hand in hand in the promotion of the culinary treats of the socalled Natural Paradise, as approximately 60% of the over 100.000 people who place their trust each year in the professional work of the Institute, come from outside Asturias, even from abroad, which also means, as FernándezVega reminded us, a boosting effect for the hotel, catering, commerce and transport industry and, ultimately, to the service sector. An effect that increases due to the fact that most of them come accompanied by someone and, sometimes, they either extend their stay or decide to get to know better this region during their holidays.

The association, with its over 33 years, was glossed by the president of the Asturian Academy of Gastronomy and collaVictor Bango borator of this journal, Eduardo Méndez Riestra, who highlighted the role of this professionals in promoting and projecting the image of our best gastronomy both inside and outside our autonomous community, “it’s been overachieved”, as well as in “encouraging a true fraternity presided by an exemplary companionship and comradeship so that everyone is at the forefront”.

The event was attended by the mayor of Oviedo, Agustín Iglesias Caunedo; the mayor of Avilés, Pilar Varela; the mayor of Carreño, Ángel Riego; and different businessmen and institutional players from the region. The names of several people who have impacted asturian gastronomy both within and outside the frontiers of the Principality were reviewed during the event, with a special mention to Víctor Bango –Vitorón-, recently deceased.

Speech given by the president of the Academia Asturiana de Gastronomía, during the event

Eduardo Méndez Riestra Palabras pronunciadas por el presidente de la Academia Asturiana de Gastronomía, durante el acto Treinta y tres es uno de esos números mágicos que hay en la vida de las gentes. Hay otros como, por ejemplo, el 6 y el 4, el 007, el 69, el 100, el 103 o el 501. Pero ninguno como el 33, porque es el que nos mandan decir los médicos desde que somos pequeños cuando nos auscultan, sin saber qué misteriosos poderes encierra. Sin duda deben de ser muy grandes y por eso Fomento de la Cocina Asturiana lo ha elegido para celebrarse: cumplimos treinta y tres años de vida y por eso estamos como unas castañuelas de contentos, dicen todos a una, así que todos sus amigos compartimos esa alegría señalada. Y no es para menos, porque es una edad en la que se da por alcanzada la adultez: decía Ortega y Gasset que los hombres sólo empiezan a ser verdaderamente originales a partir de los treinta, sobreentendiendo que antes de esa edad son meras cotorras y después ya están en condiciones de hablar con personalidad propia y de crear. Así pues, Fomento de la Cocina Asturiana es ya una entidad adulta y respetable. O por lo menos lo es más que hasta la fecha si admitimos esa convención, esa frontera. Enhorabuena.

Y quiero felicitarme a mí mismo, por haber tenido la suerte de nacer, literariamente hablando, en ese 1980 en el que nació Fomento. A unos y a otro, pues, se nos da por supuesto el valor para decir y para actuar: a nuestros treinta y tres años de oficio se nos presupone o debe presuponer ya un bagaje nada desdeñable, una experiencia sólida para merecer al menos la

Thirty-three is one of those magic numbers in the lives of individuals. There are others, for example, 6, 4, 007, 69 100, 103 or 501. But none like 33, because it’s the number that physicians ask us to say from an early age when they’re auscultating us, without knowing what mysterious powers lie behind. They are undoubtedly significant and this is why Fomento de la Cocina Asturiana (promotion of the asturian cuisine) has chosen this number to be celebrated: it’s our thirty-third anniversary and we’re as happy as a sandboy, cry all of them in unison, and thus all their friends share this happiness. And with good reason, because at this age one is considered to have attained adulthood: Ortega y Gasset said that humans only start to be really original at thirty, understanding that before that they are mere chatterboxes and it’s only afterwards that they are capable of speaking with individual personality and of creating.

Therefore, Fomento de la Cocina Asturiana is an adult and respectable entity. Or at least it is more so than it was up to date if we accept this convention, this frontier. Congratulations.

And I want to congratulate myself too, because I’ve had the fortune of being born, literally speaking, in 1980 when Fomento was born. It is taken for granted that both them and I are able to decide and act: at thrity-three it is assumed or it should be assumed that we already have a far from negligible knowledge, a solid experience to at least merit attention and respect from those who come behind and who haven’t attained adulthood, when one’s hair starts to grey and one can wear a hat without shocking.

Looking back without nostalgia but with a sense of justice, my thoughts are with that great pioneer who arrived from Cantabria to improve a little our ways and to open us to the world. I am clearly referring to the prematurely deceased Luis Gil Lus, inventor of the first Gastronomic Days in Asturias, and great moderniser of our restaurant sector. Not surprisingly, he took the initiative so that Fomento de la Cocina could become a reality. Logically, he wasn’t alone: he

atención y el respeto de los que vienen detrás y que aún no han entrado por ello en esa adultez que empieza a peinar canas y tocarse de sombrero sin que choque.

Mirando atrás sin nostalgia pero con sentido de justicia, tengo presente a aquel gran pionero que llegó de Cantabria para mejorar un poco nuestras formas y abrirnos al mundo. Me refiero, claro, al prontamente desaparecido Luis Gil Lus, creador de las primeras Jornadas Gastronómicas que hubo en Asturias, y gran modernizador de nuestro sistema hostelero. De él partió, cómo no, la iniciativa para que Fomento de la Cocina llegara a ser una realidad. Aunque no estuvo solo, como es lógico: junto a él otros dos fenómenos que tampoco están ya entre nosotros, Ramón Suárez –mucho más conocido como Ramón el del Marchica, hombre tan sentido como trabajador infatigable- y Fernando Martín, Fernando el del Pelayo, el primer actualizador del sistema culinario asturiano-. Y más nombres que han pasado ya a nuestra historia gastronómica: los Conrado –padre e hijo, otros dos monstruos de la cosa, el primero ya desaparecido y el segundo, por suerte, aquí entre nosotros-. Los Quirós, padre e hija; y el pequeño Morán, pura chispa de la vida, nieto y concejal por aquélla, sin saber aún que iba a llegar al estrellato por otra vía; Rafael Secades –el revitalizador de la quesería astur y muy pronto presidente de la patronal hostelera, desde donde multiplicó el jornadismo gastronómico por todo el Principado; Ernesto Cantón y sus hermanos en la sombra, con esa Gruta que llegó a complejo y que modeló nada menos que a don Abel Terente; el irrepetible Valentín Villabona, playu donde los haya, con el más completo restaurante de Gijón por aquel tiempo, Las Delicias; Félix Loya, su esposa e hijos, una familia-institución en Avilés…

Si hacemos el balance de lo dicho y lo traducimos a establecimientos tendremos lo que sigue: Casa Fermín en El Cristo, el Marchica, Trascorrales, Casa Conrado, La Goleta, La Gruta y Babilonia, todos ellos en Oviedo; Las Delicias y El Duque, los dos en Gijón; el San Félix y La Serrana, en Avilés, y Casa Gerardo, en Prendes. Estos doce magníficos o también apóstoles, fueron, así, la primera ola, los pilares del invento.

No existe, sin embargo, la construcción perfecta; de modo que algunos de esos pilares cedieron y fue el momento de la segunda ola: desaparecieron Marchica,

worked alongside two other geniuses who are no longer amongst us, Ramón Suárez –better known as Ramón el del Marchica, as sensitive as he was hard working- and Fernando Martín –Fernando el del Pelayo, the first moderniser of the asturian culinary system. And more names that are already part of our gastronomic history: the Conrado’s –father and son, two other giants of the sector, the first already deceased and the latter, fortunately, still amongst us; the Quirós –father and daughter- and young Morán, the very spark of life, grandchild and city councillor, not knowing that he would reach stardom by other means; Rafael Secades –he revitalised the asturian cheese sector and soon was president of the hospitality employers’ association, from where he multiplied the amount of gastronomic days all across the Principality; Ernesto Cantón together with his siblings behind the scenes, with that Gruta that turned into a complex and shaped no less than don Abel Terente; the unrepeatable Valentín Villabona, a playu –name given in the region to the most genuine people from Gijón- if ever there was one, with the best equipped restaurant in Gijón at the time, Las Delicias; Félix Loya, his wife and children, a family-institution in Avilés…

If we take stock of the aforementioned and we translate it into establishments we’ll have as follows: Casa Fermín in El Cristo, Marchica, Trascorrales, Casa Conrado, La Goleta, La Gruta and Babilonia, all of them in Oviedo; Las Delicias and El Duque, both in Gijón; San Félix and La Serrana, in Avilés, and Casa Gerardo, in Prendes. These twelve giants or apostles were thus the first wave, the cornerstones of the invention.

However, the perfect construction doesn’t exist; and therefore some of these cornerstones collapsed and gave way to the second wave: Marchica, Trascorrales and Babilonia disappeared; Las Delicias changed hands, while El Duque changed its course; Tataguyo, with Juan del Rivero, took the place of La Serrana in Avilés, when the owner, Aurelio Fernández, passed away; San Félix, as every exhausted monarch –or Pope- should do, abdicated on his son, Loya II, with the Real Balneario de Salinas in his back pocket; Casa Consuelo came from the distant Otur belonging to the three García siblings (today, unfortunately, only two) as masters of the dishes of the West; Oviedo

Trascorrales y Babilonia; cambió de manos Las Delicias, mientras El Duque cambió de rumbo; Tataguyo, con Juan del Rivero, ocupó el lugar de La Serrana en Avilés, al fallecer el propietario, Aurelio Fernández; el San Félix, como debe hacer todo monarca –o Papafatigado, abdicó en su hijo, Loya II, con el Real Balneario de Salinas bajo el brazo; llegó de la lejana Otur el Casa Consuelo de los tres hermanos García (hoy, por desgracia, sólo dos) como señores de los platos de Occidente; Oviedo sumó fuerzas de elegancia con el Del Arco de la familia entreguina Sánchez y con Juan Ramón al frente; y Gijón con dos de sus pesos pesados, La Pondala, en Somió, ya sin Esther ni Conchita pero con Roberto Riginelli al mando por vía de consorcio, y Casa Víctor, en el corazón de Gijón y con Gijón en el corazón, con un Vitorón en plena gloria entonces y en plena gloria desde hace unas semanas.

Posteriormente llegaría una tercera ola, el turno de El Palacio de las Nieves felguerino, de la mano de Elías Fernández, como restaurante primo-hermano de Del Arco, aunque cada uno en su casa y Dios en la de todos; de El Asador de Abel, en La Revuelta’l coche, como una feliz emancipación desde La Gruta; y de La Venta del Jamón, en Pruvia, como mítico lugar centenario con la savia nueva del benjamín de la familia fundadora, Amado Alonso, Amadín para todos. De modo que llegaron a ser catorce entre nuevos y viejos apóstoles, si mis cuentas no fallan, porque soy muy malo para contar cualquier cosa. Pero unos van y otros vienen, por razones varias y ajenas a todos nosotros. Las más recientes incorporaciones fueron ambas oveten-

joined forces of elegance with Del Arco belonging to the Sánchez family from Entregu and headed by Juan Ramón; and Gijón with two of its heavyweights, La Pondala, in Somió, now without Esther and Conchita but headed by Roberto Riginelli through a consortium, and Casa Víctor, right in the heart of Gijón and with Gijón in its heart, with a Vitorón who was in full glory then and who has been in full glory for a few weeks now.

There would be a subsequent third wave, the turn of El Palacio de las Nieves, headed by Elías Fernández, as a restaurant closely related to Del Arco, although each to his own and God watching over everyone; El Asador de Abel, in La Revuelta’l Coche, a happy emancipation of La Gruta; and La Venta del Jamón, in Pruvia, as a legendary hundred-year-old establishment with the new blood of the youngest of the founding family, Amado Alonso, Amadín for everyone.

So, if I am not mistaken, because I’m very bad at maths, between the old and the new apostles there were fourteen of them. But some come and others go, for different reasons that have nothing to do with us.

The latest additions were both in Oviedo: the Deloya belonging to Javi Loya, and La Taberna del Zurdo belonging to Rodrigo Roza, both rising stars to enhance the sauce of Fomento, a sauce to which we must add the mixed ingredient of the siblings Javi and Laura Antón –Hurray, a woman!- who head, respectively, Casa Conrado and La Goleta. Today, however, there are once more twelve apostles: Casa Conrado, Casa Fermín, Del Arco, Deloya, La Goleta

ses: el Deloya de Javi Loya, y La Taberna del Zurdo de Rodrigo Roza, ambos jóvenes valores de éxito para enriquecer la salsa de Fomento, una salsa a la que hay que sumar también el ingrediente mixto de los hermanos Javi y Laura Antón –¡Aleluya, una mujer!- para hacerse cargo respectivamente de Casa Conrado y La Goleta. Hoy, sin embargo, vuelven a ser doce apóstoles, como Dios manda: Casa Conrado, Casa Fermín, Del Arco, Deloya, La Goleta y La Taberna del Zurdo, en Oviedo; La Pondala, en Gijón; Tataguyo, en Avilés; el Real Balneario, en Salinas; El Asador de Abel, en La Revuelta’l coche; el Palacio de las Nieves, en La Felguera y finalmente –de laaast, bat not de liiist, aet prezent tuuu in Landon-, Casa Gerardo, de la aldea de Prendes a la aldea de Londres.

Cuando el forastero llega a Ranón, las únicas caras sonrientes que encuentra para acogerle son las de unos deslumbrantes hosteleros que se le ofrecen –eso sí, en imagen, pero a tamaño natural-, casi como en una película de Berlanga, aunque Mr. Marshall por aquí apenas pisa. Pero pisan muchos madrileños y catalanes y vascos y valencianos y andaluces y castellanos y mejicanos y argentinos y qué sé yo. Y no ofrecen sus cuerpos los hosteleros, claro, que son ya casi diplomáticos, sino algo mucho mejor: unas viandas de lujo transformadas en manjares por sus propias manos o las delegadas, que tanto monta, para delicia de extraños pero sobre todo de propios, que no llegan sino que están. Su objetivo ha sido y sigue siendo el de potenciar y proyectar la imagen de nuestra mejor gastronomía tanto dentro como fuera de nuestra Comunidad, algo más que conseguido. Yo añadiría que también fomentar una auténtica hermandad presidida por ejemplar compañerismo y camaradería para estar todos a la cabeza. Desde hace años, por si no lo saben, preside esta ya vetusta asociación de elite Marcelo Conrado Antón Pertierra, que, como está en vías de recuperación del gran susto que llevó hace casi dos años, le ha pedido al vicepresidente Pedro Morán que trabaje un poco y que le eche una mano en sus funciones; y así la nave de Fomento sigue navegando viento en popa entre la fuerte marejada de la crisis sin peligro de zozobra, porque Morán tal vez no tenga una gran altura física pero tiene a buen seguro una gran altura de miras y ha demostrado ser un gran capitán de empresa.

When a foreigner comes to Ranón, the only smiling faces that welcome him are those of the stunning innkeepers that present themselves –as an image, yes, but full-size-, as in one of Berlanga’s films, although Mr. Marshall doesn’t come here too often.

But many madrilenians and catalonians and basques and andalucians and castillians and mexicans and argentinians and goodness knows who else does come. Obviously, innkeepers don’t offer their bodies, although they are almost a diplomat corps, they offer something better: luxury food turned into exquisite dishes thanks to their hands, or those of their delegates, same difference, to the delight of foreigners but mostly of locals, who don’t come but are already here.

Their aim is and has always been to promote and project the image of our best gastronomy both within and outside our Community, something that has been overachieved. I would also like to add that their aim is also to encourage a true fraternity presided by an exemplary companionship and comradeship so that everyone is at the forefront. In case you don’t know, Marcelo Conrado Antón Pertierra has been the president of this ancient elite association for many years but, as he is recovering from the great scare that the suffered nearly two years ago, has asked vice-president Pedro Morán to get a little work done and to lend him a hand with his duties; and so the vessel of Fomento keeps sailing with the wind in its sails in the heavy seas of the crisis without risk of sinking, because Morán might not be very tall but he sure has his sights set high and has proved to be a great business captain.

En aras de dar un mejor servicio a la sociedad en general y a sus pacientes en particular, el Instituto y sus fundaciones se renuevan y apuestan por su presencia activa en Internet.

Se han vuelto más accesibles para todos a través de su triple página web, de sus perfiles en Facebook y Twitter y de su canal de Youtube.

Medios desde los que –a diferencia de las webs más tradicionales- se gestiona la comunicación con la comunidad, se crean contenidos digitales, se dialoga con todo aquel que lo desee y un largo etcétera de posibilidades que cada vez se multiplican a mayor velocidad.

In order to give a better service to society at large and specifically to its patients, the Institute and its foundations renew themselves and opt for their active presence on the Internet. They’ve become more accessible for everytone through its triple website, its Facebook and Twitter profiles and its channel in Youtube. Media from which –contrary to the most traditional websites- we can manage the communication with the community, create digital content, dialogue with everyone who wishes to do so and a long etcetera of possibilities that are quickly increasng in number.

Como punto de partida, la web da la bienvenida a sus usuarios a través de un portal llamado “landing page” en el que se reciben, comparten y publican los contenidos de las redes sociales –tanto propios como del sector- y que funciona como centro de operaciones online en el que se concentra y desde el que se difunde toda la “conversación” que se genera en la Red. Desde este portal se puede acceder directamente a sus tres páginas web, así como a todos sus perfiles y canales en Internet.

As a starting point, the website welcomes its users through a webpage called “landing page” were we receive, share and publish the contents of the social networks –both our own and from the sector- and which acts as an online operations centre concentrating and spreading all the “talk” created on the Internet. One can access all three websites, as well as all the profiles and channels on the Internet from this webpage.

Una vez en la página web, a través de los menús desplegables, el Instituto trata de mantener informado de forma amigable a todo aquel que desee conocer cuestiones como su equipo médico, su historia, sus servicios, su actualidad médica y docente, las enfermedades que afectan al ojo, la forma de contactar con el centro, los beneficios para los pacientes, las líneas de investigación de la Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica o los proyectos de la Fundación Fernández-Vega, que reflejan la vertiente más humana de la atención médica que ofrece el Instituto. Pero estas son sólo algunas de las cuestiones de interés que se pueden encontrar al dar una vuelta por la web o por sus perfiles en Facebook y Twitter, que a día de hoy cuentan con 7.500 fans y más de 900 seguidores, respectivamente.

Al alcance de todos ellos, de forma rápida y sencilla, está el Instituto, sus servicios y sus profesionales.

Así, estas “plataformas” digitales sirven al Instituto, a sus pacientes y alumnos de punto de encuentro dentro del mundo de la oftalmología. En este sentido, es importante mencionar que la web del Instituto no es un mero canal informativo, sino que permite la interacción de sus pacientes y otros públicos que, por ejemplo, pueden formular preguntas a través de la Red o solicitar una cita desde la sección “consulta online”. Y es que en todos sus sitios web se da cabida a información para todo tipo de público, desde el que entra en ella para obtener una cita o comprobar la fecha de un seminario, curso o congreso, hasta el que la consulta con el objetivo de leer una publicación científica, pasando por los que acceden para realizar una visita virtual y los que prefieren consultar los álbumes de fotos y vídeos de la sección multimedia. Incluso, desde su página se puede hojear esta revista que tiene en sus manos, así como todos los números que se han publicado hasta la fecha.

Los contenidos son diversos y, aunque se cuidan al detalle, el Instituto siempre está abierto a nuevas ideas, para lo que su web cuenta con un buzón de sugerencias.

Su comunicación en la Red es, al fin y al cabo, un medio de información valioso para todos sus pacientes, así como para los que nunca han estado allí y para los que irán en un futuro. Sin olvidar a los que, quizás, no les visiten nunca, pero quieran saber de primera mano en qué consisten las enfermedades que afectan a los ojos, qué posibilidades de tratamiento están a su alcance u otras cuestiones de interés.

Cabe mencionar también que el año pasado su página web, antes incluso de llevarse a cabo la última renovación, se alzó con el premio ”Favoritos en la red” que otorga Diario Médico y ha sido elegida como la mejor página web de la V Edición “Los Favoritos en la red del ámbito sanitario” en la categoría de Médicos y en la subcategoría de Hospitales, Asociaciones y Fundaciones.

Once in the webpage, through the drop-down menus, the Institute aims to keep informed in a friendly manner everyone who wishes to know more about its medical team, its history, its services, its medical and teaching news, eye diseases, how to get in touch with the centre, benefits for patients, research lines of the Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica or the proyects of the Fundación Fernández-Vega, which reflect the most human dimension of the medical care provided by the Institute. These are just some of the issues of interest that one can find while surfing the web or its Facebook and Twitter profiles, which currently have 7,500 fans and 900 followers, respectively.

These “platforms” serve as a meeting point for the Institute, its patients and students within the ophthalmology field. In this respect, it is important to point out that the Institute’s website is more than just a communication channel, it also allows for the interaction of its patients or other target audiences who, for example, may ask questions through the Network or request an appointment through the section “online practice”. There’s always room in all its websites for information for all kinds of audiences, from those who visit it to request a consultation or check the date of a seminar, course or conferente, to those who visit it to read a scientific publication, as well as those who want to do a virtual tour or those who want to see the pictures and videos of the multimedia section. On the website, one can even leaf through this journal that you are holding as well as every issue that has been published to date.

Content is diverse and, even though every last detail is given the utmost attention, the Institute is always open to new ideas, to this end the website has a suggestions box.

After all, its communication on the Internet is a valuable information channel for all its patients, as well as for those who’ve never been there and for those who will go in the future. Not to mention those who might never visit the Institute, but wish to know first-hand about eye diseases, possible treatments available or other issues of concern.

Fernández-Vega Fernández-Vega on RNE en RNE El reconocido periodista y locutor de radio Luis del Olmo se desplazó a mediados de junio a Asturias para entrevistar en directo en el programa Protagonistas de Radio Nacional de España al Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega, en un espacio dedicado a protagonistas de la actualidad en muy diversas facetas.

El Prof. Fernández-Vega, al que Del Olmo se refirió en todo momento como “uno de los oftalmólogos más prestigiosos del mundo”, aconsejó a los oyentes llevar una vida sana y realizar las revisiones oportunas para prevenir la aparición de posibles enfermedades o patologías oculares y, en su caso, poder detectarlas a tiempo para tomar las medidas adecuadas. “Una vida sana, realizar controles médicos a lo largo de las distintas etapas de la vida y una alimentación adecuada son las principales pautas para tener una visión estupenda durante toda la vida”, aseguró el director médico del Instituto, que recomendó una dieta equilibrada rica en vitaminas como la A y la E o compuestos como el zinc, así como en legumbres o verduras para una buena salud ocular.

The renowned journalist and radio speaker Luis del Olmo came to Asturias in the middle of June to do a live interview to Prof Luis Fernández-Vega for the programme Protagonistas on Radio Nacional de España, in a show devoted to current leading roles in different settings.

Prof Fernández-Vega, referred by Del Olmo as “one of the most prestigious ophthalmologists of the world”, recommended the listeners to lead a healthy life and to carry out timely revisions to prevent the occurrence of possible eye pathologies or diseases and, where relevant, to enable the early detection in order to take the appropriate measures. “A healthy life, getting regular check-ups throughout the different stages of life and an adequate nutrition are the key guidelines to have a great sight throughout

Asimismo, el Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega también advirtió sobre la conveniencia de proteger los ojos del sol con gafas adquiridas en una óptica con las homologaciones correspondientes, así como sobre los cuidados necesarios a tener en cuenta en los casos de un uso excesivo de pantallas reflectantes. “Es verdad que tanto la televisión como las pantallas de ordenador y otros dispositivos nos están suponiendo someter al aparato visual a un reclamo sobreañadido de esfuerzo y esto puede producir problemas de sequedad ocular, fatiga o cansancio. Debería hacerse con las dosis de descanso sistemático, con un parón cada hora y media o dos horas para descansar el ojo, e, incluso, con la utilización de lágrimas artificiales”, afirmó.

El director médico del Instituto, preguntado por Del Olmo, realizó también un repaso a las principales bondades del láser, un método empleado en Oftalmología “desde hace muchos años, tanto para tratar un glaucoma como una diabetes, para corregir un defecto de graduación o para operar, en este momento, hasta trasplantes de córnea o incluso cataratas. El láser nos ha ayudado mucho y es un instrumento muy eficaz, aunque indudablemente no sustituye nunca las manos del cirujano”, matizó.

A ese respecto, alabó el elevado nivel con el que cuenta España en Oftalmología, “una rama de la medicina que ha estado siempre muy prestigiada en España gracias al trabajo de doctores que la pusieron en el mapa mundial”, reconoció, y aseguró que, si bien se ha avanzado muchísimo en la última década, aún queda mucho para erradicar los múltiples tipos de ceguera existentes. “La frontera fundamental que tiene la Oftalmología en este momento para la ceguera la constituyen aquellas alteraciones del nervio óptico que produzcan una atrofia de este. Por mucho que nosotros hagamos y que tengamos el ojo en perfectas condiciones, si no hay posibilidad de transmisión a través de ese nervio óptico no conseguimos nada. Hay que tener en cuenta que el nervio óptico es como una representación del cerebro a nivel ocular”, aclaró.

Laser has helped us out a lot and it is a very efficient instrument, although undoubtedly it never substitutes the hands of the surgeon”, he clarified.

To this respect, he praised the high level of ophthalmology in Spain, “a branch of medicine that has always been held in high regard in Spain thanks to the work of physicians who put it on the map”, he declared. He also assured that although the last decade has seen important advances, there is still much to do

This is why he stressed the importance of research in the advances made in these last few years and, when asked by Del Olmo about the financial cutbacks in Healthcare, Fernández-Vega expressed his wish to the Health Minister, Ana Mato, “try to cut from other places”. “Don’t cut there, we must have a universal health service, it will be necessary to study how to make it sustainable over the years, but it’s certainly important that no cutbacks are made in research as it is the treatment for the future”, highlighted the medical director of the Institute.

Focusing on other issues, Luis del Olmo asked Prof Fernández-Vega to dare diagnose, based on his professional judgement, the spanish politicians in these difficult moments, to which the President of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology referred to as a “full pathology with regard to what’s happening in our country”. “I don’t believe that it’s any different to what’s happening in the rest of Europe, but it would do a lot of good if politicians consulted the appropriate professionals so that, maybe, between all of us, we could help them by shedding a little light on what the future should look like”, he recommended.

Luis Fernández-Vega also referred to the monarchy, to which he has been treating its eye health for many years. To questions by Del Olmo, the professor answered that he considers that this institution “is going to keep representing that factor of stability that the country needs, that it will continue from one generation to the other when the time is right and that it will be one of the institutions that will help us overcome this major crisis in which we find ourselves in at present, both financially and politically, socially and institutionally”.

Del Olmo pointed out the international recognition of the Institute and its professionals and asked why they had never thought of establishing their headquarters outside Asturias, to which Prof Fernández-

Asturias, a lo que el Prof. Fernández-Vega explicó que es una cuestión de raíces. “Yo pertenezco a la cuarta generación de oftalmólogos de mi familia, y mis hijos Luis y Andrés ya son la quinta generación. Uno ya es médico y está haciendo la especialidad, y el otro acaba de terminar ahora la carrera de Medicina. Tanto ellos como mis sobrinos no han tenido nunca dudas sobre que querían ser oftalmólogos, seguramente por lo que han visto en casa y por la educación, en la que ha tenido mucho que ver mi mujer, Vicky. Ese caldo de cultivo y pensar que las raíces deben ser profundas nos ha hecho mantenernos aquí, y seguimos apostando por nuestra comunidad”, defendió.

Vega answered that it’s a matter of roots. “I belong to the fourth generation of ophthalmologists in my family, and my sons Luis and Andrés are already the fifth generation. One is already a physician and is doing his residency, and the other has just finished his degree in Medicine. Neither them nor my nephews have ever doubted that they wanted to be ophthalmologists, probably because of what they have seen at home and because of their upbringing, in which my wife, Vicky, has had a great impact. This breeding ground and believing that roots should run very deep have made us stay here, and we remain committed to our community”, he defended.

más que una expectativa la Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica cumple cuatro años en la frontera del conocimiento de la Oftalmología y Ciencias de la Visión Recientemente se cumplieron cuatro años del comienzo de la actividad de la Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica (FIO) y, aunque la investigación necesita más tiempo para consolidarse, un breve resumen de los primeros resultados puede ser el que sigue.

La FIO es una iniciativa de la familia Fernández-Vega que fue apoyada desde su inicio por la Fundación María Cristina Masaveu y a la que se sumaron más tarde otras entidades de la sociedad civil y donaciones de pacientes. Desde sus comienzos también ha conseguido financiación de organismos públicos y privados con proyectos de investigación competitivos.

Cuenta con treinta trabadores con dedicación exclusiva que realizan su actividad en un espacio de mil metros cuadrados dotado con todos los recursos materiales y técnicos para desarrollar su labor. La inversión inicial, entre obra civil y dotaciones, fue de cuatro millones de euros y el presupuesto anual supera el millón y medio.

Su misión es profundizar en el conocimiento de las bases de las enfermedades oculares para poder prevenirlas y tratarlas. Para ello, se ha organizado en tres grupos de investigación dirigidos por un investigador principal con el que colaboran jóvenes investigadores y técnicos.

more than just expectations The FIO has celebrated four years on the leading edge of knowledge in the field of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences Last April we celebrated the fourth anniversary of the start of the business activity of the Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica (FIO) and, even though research needs more time to be consolidated, following is a brief summary of our first results.

The FIO is a Fernández-Vega family initiative supported from the very start by the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu, and soon joined by other entities of civil society and donations from patients. From the very beginning it has always secured funding from public and private bodies with competitive research

projects. It has 20 full-time researchers who work in an area of 1000 square meters equipped with all the material and technical resources needed to conduct their work. The up-front investment, between civil society and donations, was four million euros and the annual budget exceeds one and a half millions.

Its mission is to further the knowledge of the basis of eye diseases to be able to avoid and treat them. In order to do so, there are three research teams directed by a principal investigator who collaborated with young researchers and technicians.

Superficie Ocular El primer grupo es el de Superficie Ocular, que se dedica a investigar en inervación, cicatrización e inflamación y medicina regenerativa en este área. Los investigadores principales son el Prof. Carlos Belmonte, el Dr. Álvaro Meana y el Dr. Jesús Merayo, que también es el director de investigación de la Fundación. Procuran resolver problemas que todavía no tienen tratamientos adecuados como el dolor ocular, el inicio del síndrome de ojo seco o las alteraciones de la transparencia corneal. Estas dos líneas de investigación cooperan con la tercera, dedicada a obtener abordajes regenerativos que sean una alternativa al trasplante de tejidos oculares clásicos.

En el apartado de inervación corneal es significativo el origen de las sensaciones de ojo seco. De la mano

del Prof. Carlos Belmonte, Omar González registra la actividad de las terminales nerviosas de la córnea y los mecanismos que las hacen activarse de forma anómala. Para ello, se utiliza un equipo de registro electrofisiológico de terminal sensorial única (“single terminal recording”) adaptado a córnea de ratón.

Todo esto tiene su aplicación clínica en nuevos abordajes a la sequedad ocular, que es uno de los motivos más frecuentes de consulta. A nivel clínico, y gracias al impulso del área de investigación, se cuenta con un instrumento que mide la sensibilidad corneal (estesiómetro) y ayuda a caracterizar el dolor ocular. Como novedad para los pacientes, durante 2013 la unidad clínica de superficie ocular (Dres. Merayo, Alfonso, Blázquez, Yllera, Riaño, Lisa, Naveiras y Fernández) participa en tres ensayos clínicos que tienen que ver

Ocular Surface The first team is Eye Surface, devoted to the research of innervation, healing and inflammation and regenerative medicine in this area. The principal investigators are Prof Carlos Belmonte, Dr Álvaro Meana and Dr Jesús Merayo, who is also the research director at the Foundation. They address problems that lack appropriate treatments such as ocular pain, the onset of dry eye or corneal transparency alterations. These two lines of research cooperate with the third, devoted to obtaining regenerative approaches as an alternative to classic eye tissue transplant.

In the section of corneal innervation, the origin of the sensations of dry eye is significant. Together with Prof Carlos Belmonte, Omar González records the activity of the nerve endings of the cornea and the mechanisms by which they are activated in an anomalous way. To this end, they use single sensory electrophysiology equipment adapted to the mouse cornea.

All this is clinically applied in new approaches to dry eyes, one of the most common causes for medical consultation. At a clinical level, and thanks to the drive of the research area, we have a device that measures corneal sensitivity (aesthesiometer) and helps characterise ocular pain. As a new feature for

con fármacos que interfieren con el dolor ocular antes de que se produzca (tecnología de RNA de interferencia con los laboratorios Sylentis) y dos fármacos regenerativos para queratitis neurotróficas: la aplicación tópica del factor de crecimiento neural (Dompe) y de un compuesto derivado del Herapan Sulfato (Thea). Además, durante estos años, a partir de la FIO se ha consolidado la estructura de la farmacia hospitalaria (Ana Riestra y Arancha Poo) que permite aplicar colirios personalizados y derivados hemáticos como el Plasma Rico en Factores de Crecimiento (PRGF) para úlceras corneales y ojo seco grave.

El estudio de la inervación y del tropismo corneal permite conocer mejor patologías como el queratocono, que ha sido llevado al laboratorio por medio de un modelo experimental que ayuda a saber más sobre cómo se produce. Para este proyecto se ha obtenido financiación del Instituto de Salud Carlos III. Esta enfermedad se está caracterizando por medio del análisis de los marcadores en tejidos oculares como la lágrima junto a la empresa Bioftalmic. El queratocono se puede tratar con segmentos de anillos intraestromales (AJL), donde la unidad de investigación clínica ha desarrollado los programas que permiten una cirugía personalizada de los mismos. Este es un ejemplo de cómo una enfermedad considerada como “rara” se puede abordar mejor con medidas preventivas (tratar de evitar el rascado), tratamiento médico (reducir la inflamación de la superficie ocular) y tratamiento quirúrgico, al poner a trabajar juntos a investigadores básicos y clínicos.

En el laboratorio número dos, Carlos Alonso y Ana Fernández han logrado detectar nuevos neuropéptidos en el epitelio corneal, que hasta ahora se creían exclusivos del tubo digestivo, con propiedades tróficas sobre la superficie ocular y se están ensayando en cierre de heridas corneales en cultivos celulares.

patients, throughout 2013 the clinical unit of eye surface (Drs Merayo, Alfonso, Blázquez, Yllera, Riaño, Lisa, Naveiras and Fernández) participates in three clinical trials connected to drugs that interfere with ocular pain before it happens (RNA interference technology with Sylentis) and two regenerative drugs for neurotrophic keratitis: topical application of nerve growth factor (Dompe) and a compound derived from Herapan Sulfate (Thea). Furthermore, during these years, FIO has consolidated the structure of the hospital pharmacy (Ana Riestra and Arancha Poo) that enables the application of customised eye drops and hematic derivatives such as plasma rich growth factors for corneal ulcers and severe dry eye.

The study of innervation and corneal tropism allows for a better understanding of pathologies like keratoconus, which has been brought to the lab through an experimental model that gives a better understanding of how it occurs. Instituto de Salud Carlos III has funded this project. This disease is being characterised, together with Bioftalmic, through the analysis of the markers in ocular tissues such as tears. Keratoconus can be treated with intrastromal ring segments (AJL); the clinical research unit has developed programs that enable a customised surgery. This is an example of how a disease considered “unusual” is better approached through preventive measures (try to avoid scraping), medical treatment (reduce the inflammation of the ocular surface) and surgical treatment, when basic and clinical researchers work together.

Por último, todo el grupo de superficie ocular da apoyo al Dr. Álvaro Meana que, junto con Manuel Chacón y Natalia Vázquez, trata de desarrollar alternativas al trasplante de córnea con cultivos de endotelio corneal y el proyecto de realizar córneas artificiales, que ya ha conseguido financiación en proyectos competitivos del Ministerio de Economía como el “Innpacto Silcor”, con un presupuesto cercano a los dos millones de euros, o el recientemente obtenido “Innova”, que trata de desarrollar técnicas de bio impresión aplicada a tejidos oculares.

Toda esta actividad investigadora genera una gran capacidad docente que es aprovechada por alumnos del grado de Biología de la Universidad de Oviedo para hacer su trabajo fin de grado en la FIO (Lucía González, Francisco Javier Colina y Federico Bech), para realizar sus tesis doctorales (Ana Fernández o Almudena Íñigo) o para que los oftalmólogos cursen parte de su máster en Superficie Ocular y Córnea (María Fernández, 2012-13).

In lab number 2, Carlos Alonso and Ana Fernández have been able to detect new neuropeptides in the corneal epithelium, hitherto exclusive of the digestive tract, showing trophic properties on the ocular surface; they are being tested on corneal wound closure and cell cultures.

Lastly, the whole ocular surface team supports Dr Álvaro Meana who, together with Manuel Chacón and Natalia Vázquez, is devoted to the development of alternatives to cornea transplant with corneal epithelial cell cultures and to the project of creating artificial corneas, which has already obtained funding in competitive projects of the Ministry of Economy, like “Innpacto Silcor”, with a budget of approximately two million euros or the recently obtained “Innova”, which aims to develop techniques of bioimpression applied to ocular tissues.

All these research activity generates great teaching capacities enjoyed by students of Biology at Universidad de Oviedo to do their final project at FIO (Lucía González, Francisco Javier Colina and Federico Bech), to write their doctoral thesis (Ana Fernández or Almudena Íñigo) or as part of a Masters in ocular surface and cornea for ophthalmologists (María Fernández, 2012-13).

Neurobiología de la Retina El grupo de Neurobiología de la Retina, dirigido por el catedrático Neville Osborne de la Universidad de Oxford, estudia los mecanismos por los que se producen ciertas enfermedades degenerativas de la retina, como el glaucoma y la degeneración macular asociada a la edad, DMAE. Este grupo de investigación no solo busca comprender las causas, sino que trata de encontrar dianas terapéuticas que puedan ser viables en un futuro. El Dr. Osborne cuenta en su equipo con Susana del Olmo y Claudia Núñez.

Una de las líneas más destacadas del grupo es el estudio de la luz y el efecto que tiene ésta en pacientes con DMAE o glaucoma. De este modo, han visto cómo las longitudes de onda corta de la luz visible (la luz del sol, la luz blanca de lámparas y diferentes utensilios de la vida cotidiana) podrían ejercer un efecto negativo en pacientes con dichas enfermedades, pudiendo acelerar su desarrollo. Durante el pasado año, el grupo de neurobiología de la retina centró

Neurobiology of the retina The team of neurobiology of the retina –headed by Dr Neville Osborne, Prof at Oxford University- studies the mechanisms at the basis of certain degenerative diseases of the retina like glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration, ARMD. This team doesn’t only seek to understand the causes, but aims to find therapeutic targets that may be viable in the future. Susana del Olmo and Claudia Núñez are in Dr Osborne’s team.

One of the most relevant lines of the team is the study of light and its effect on patients with ARMD or glaucoma. They’ve seen how short wavelengths of visible light (daylight, white light from lamps and different every-day utensils) may have a negative effect on patients with the aforementioned diseases, accelerating its process. Last year, the neurobiology of the retina team focused their study on how those “harmful” wavelengths directly affected mitochondria, a cellular organelle involved in supplying energy to the cell.

Ganglion cells in the retina are a type of cell with a large amount of mitochondria; they have a great dependency on them because they need a lot of energy to function.

En pacientes con glaucoma y DMAE, las mitocondrias se ven afectadas, lo que las hace más vulnerables a la luz, pudiendo producir un agravamiento de la enfermedad. Es importante señalar que en condiciones normales, de intensidad de luz solar o de luz usada a diario, la luz NO es un factor de riesgo, y por sí sola no produce daño grave en la retina.

Mitochondria are responsible for supplying “fuel” to these retinal cells and the failure of the source of energy causes cellular cell death and the progression of glaucoma.

In patients with glaucoma and ARMD, mitochondria are affected, making them more vulnerable to light, which might cause an aggravation of the disease. It is worth noting that in normal conditions –intense natural light or ever-day use of light- light is NOT a risk factor, on its own it doesn’t cause any serious retinal damage.

Pero no todo son noticias negativas con respecto a la luz. Este mismo grupo está estudiando qué otro tipo de longitudes de onda de la luz –denominadas longitudes de onda larga- podrían tener una capacidad terapéutica, y siguiendo esta teoría se están llevando a cabo numerosos estudios que permitan su uso en un futuro en la clínica.

Paralelamente a estos estudios de la luz, el grupo del Prof. Osborne también trabaja en la búsqueda de sustancias que tengan un efecto neuroprotector y puedan usarse como tratamiento en las diferentes enfermedades neurodegenerativas de la retina. El conocimiento a nivel molecular de las enfermedades nos permite entender su mecanismo de acción y, por tanto, abre vías a nuevos tratamientos más específicos y efectivos.

But not all light-related news are bad. This same group is studying that another type of wavelength –called long wavelengths- may have a therapeutic effect, and following this theory are conducting several studies to enable its use at the practice in the future.

In parallel with these studies on light, Prof Osborne’s team is also working to find substances with a neuroprotective effect that can be used in the treatment of the different neurodegenerative diseases of the retina. Understanding diseases at a molecular lever allows us to comprehend its mechanism of action and, therefore, opens new more specific and more effective treatment paths.

Genética ocular El grupo de genética ocular está liderado por el Dr. Miguel Coca Prados (Universidad de Yale, EE.UU.) y cuenta con los investigadores post doctorales Lidia Álvarez, Héctor González y Monserrat García. Esta unidad está enfocada a los estudios de genética ocular con objeto de descubrir biomarcadores diagnósticos y terapéuticos para el abordaje de las patologías oculares más relevantes. Durante estos primeros años está dedicada a los estudios genéticos de glaucoma y ya ha comenzado otros en DMAE y patologías como el glaucoma, enfermedad que a pesar de constituir una de las primeras causas de gasto farmacéutico y consumo de recursos sanitarios sigue provocando ceguera en los países desarrollados. Si se consiguen nuevos marcadores de diagnóstico precoz y fármacos personalizados basados en los perfiles genéticos, se podrá avanzar en la solución de una necesidad médica no resuelta hasta el momento.

Genetics of the eye The team of genetics of the eye is headed by Dr Miguel Coca Prados (Yale University, USA) it involves the participation of post doctorate researchers Lidia Álvarez, Héctor González and Monserrat García. This unit focuses on eye genetics; it aims to discover diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers to approach the most relevant ocular pathologies. During these first years it has been devoted to glaucoma genetic studies and has already started studies on ARMD and other pathologies such as glaucoma, a disease that despite being one of the leading causes for drug expenditure and consumption is still causing blindness in developing countries. If we can find new early diagnostic markers and customised drugs based on genetic profiles, we will be able to advance in the solution of an unmet medical need.

Autor de cerca de un centenar de publicaciones en periódicos con revisión científica externa y capítulos en más de una decena de libros, Andrea Leonardi es profesor asistente del departamento de Neurociencias en la unidad de Oftalmología de la Universidad de Padua y un experto reconocido internacionalmente en el campo de la alergia ocular. Recientemente ha visitado el Instituto y la Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica en el marco de una colaboración que persigue mejorar el diagnóstico de esta afección y de otras enfermedades de la superficie ocular.

¿En qué medida son importantes las alergias oculares?

Afectan a entre el 15 y el 20 por ciento de la población en Europa y, dentro de estos, aproximadamente el 50 por ciento puede padecer síntomas oculares en algún momento de su vida. Esto no quiere decir que todos los alérgicos padezcan síntomas oculares, pero a menudo estos son infravalorados por los pacientes y por los médicos de cabecera que los tratan. Es un área muy amplia y son enfermedades importantes en su nivel agudo, como en las enfermedades alérgicas oculares crónicas, y en las formas leves son más frecuentes de lo que se piensa. Rascarse los ojos nunca es una buena idea, por lo que tener el tratamiento y el diagnóstico

adecuado es siempre una buena elección. Incluso los pacientes que tienen síntomas ocasionales deberían recibir el tratamiento adecuado y no hacer uso de un producto farmacéutico para un síntoma no específico.

Además de por las molestias asociadas, ¿pueden llegar a ocasionar ceguera?

Ceguera es una palabra muy fuerte y, normalmente, no se asocia con los problemas alérgicos. Sin embargo, no es solo una incomodidad para el paciente, porque sobre todo en las afecciones crónicas se ve afectada la agudeza visual. Cuando es la córnea la afectada, como en el caso de los pacientes graves con queratoconjuntivitis vernal y queratoconjuntivitis atópica, también

Author of nearly one hundred journal publications that were peer-reviewed externally and chapters in over a dozen books, Prof Andrea Leonardi is assistant professor in the department of Neurosciences in the ophthalmology unit at Padua University and an internationally renowned expert in the field of ocular allergies. He has recently visited the Institute and the Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica (Eye Research Foundation) in the framework of a partnership that aims to improve the diagnosis of this condition and of other diseases of the eye surface.

How important are ocular allergies?

They affect between 15 to 20% of the European population and, within these patients, approximately 50% may suffer ocular symptoms at some point in life. This doesn’t mean that all those who have allergies suffer ocular symptoms, but these are usually underestimated by patients and by the general practitioners treating them. It’s a large area and they are major diseases in the severe forms, as is the case of chronic eye allergies, and in mild forms they’re more common than one might thinks. Scratching your eyes in never a good idea, so having the right treatment and the right diagnosis is always a good choice. Even patients with occasional symptoms should have the right treatment and not use a drug therapy for a nonspecific symptom.

Besides the discomfort associated with the condition, have ocular allergies been known to cause blindness?

Blindness is a very strong word and, normally, it isn’t associated to allergic problems. However it’s not just a discomfort for the patients, especially in chronic forms were visual acuity is affected. When the cornea is affected, as is the case of severe patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis and atopic keratoconjunctivitis, visual impairment can also appear, although these are very rare cases. What people usually complain of is discomfort, not as a symptom, but as a visual complication. So maybe they don’t become blind, this happens very rarely, but they might suffer visual impairments. Not refractive problems, but they don’t see well all the time because the tearing, itching and burning sensation are affecting visual acuity.

So blindness, as I mentioned before, is rare. However, it can occur in patients who have been treated with steroids for a long period of time, but we know nothing of the possible side effects, so in that case one may find cataracts and glaucoma. Cataracts can be operated fairly easily, but glaucoma in patients treated with steroids poses a problem. And, despite rarely, blindness may occur in patients who aren’t treated adequately. When one has a patient with allergies, one has to explain what the disease is and educate him to avoid those triggers that can cause symptoms and signs and on when to use drugs in an appropriate way.

Se pueden operar las cataratas con relativa facilidad, pero el glaucoma en pacientes tratados con esteroides es un problema. Y, aunque no ocurre con frecuencia, puede pasar en aquellos que no son tratados adecuadamente. Cuando

se tiene un paciente alérgico hay que explicarle qué es la enfermedad y educarle para que evite los desencadenantes de los síntomas y signos, así como sobre cuándo usar los medicamentos y la forma adecuada de hacerlo. ¿Qué personas tienen mayor riesgo de padecer alergias oculares? ¿Cuáles son las causas más frecuentes?

atópica y en los niños con queratoconjuntivitis vernal, ya que pueden padecer complicaciones y tener síntomas graves. El otro grupo de mayor riesgo es el de los pacientes con dermatitis atópicas con riesgo de desarrollar queratoconjuntivitis atópica, lo que en realidad es una forma de alergia ocular, pero que da más problemas si además se tiene queratoconjuntivitis vernal.

Después hay otro grupo que puede desarrollar afecciones cutáneas alrededor del párpado, que son los pacientes con glaucoma o las mujeres que usan mucho maquillaje. La sensibilidad al maquillaje aumenta con la edad, por lo que la alergia normal es para la gente joven,

pero sufrirla por contacto en el párpado y en la superficie ocular es cada vez más frecuente con la edad debido a un mayor uso y contacto con el maquillaje, agentes químicos y fármacos. Se trata de un tipo diferente de alergia, pero afecta con mayor frecuencia a personas de más edad que el que sufre la alergia clásica.

En cuanto a la raza, no suele haber muchas diferencias. Puede aparecer en los caucásicos, en los africanos, en los africanos del norte… en todas las razas.

En lo relativo al género, sólo la queratoconjuntivitis vernal puede aparecer con más frecuencia en los niños varones, pero puede darse en ambos sexos.

What types of people are at a higher risk of suffering ocular allergies? What are the most common causes?

Definitively, children with atopic dermatitis and children with vernal keratoconjunctivitis are at higher risk, as they may suffer complications and have severe symptoms. The other group are patients with atopic dermatitis at risk of developing atopic keratoconjunctivitis, which is actually a form of ocular allergy, but the one that gives more problems if the patient also has vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

There is another group that might develop skin conditions surrounding the eyelid; these are patients with glaucoma or women who use a lot of make-up.

Sensitisation to make-up is becoming more frequent with age, so the typical allergy is for young people but when contact sensitivity on the eyelid and in the ocular surface is becoming more frequent with age

because of more use of makeup, chemicals and drugs. So it’s a different type of allergy that affects more frequently older people than classic allergy.

As for race, there usually isn’t a great difference from one to another. It can occur in Caucasians, Africans, and Northern Africans…. in every race.

As for gender,VKC is more frequent in young children, usually males although it can occur in both sexes.

The most frequent causes are environmental allergens such as pollen and mite; these are still the two main causes of allergic diseases. Besides this, we might have mould and animals, and sometimes food, although this is not the main cause for ocular symptoms even though patients might think that they don’t tolerate a certain type of food. A good way of working with patients is to look into their diet or supplements, sometimes they eat too much chocolate or coffee or some food that increases sensitivity to his-

Seguir una buena dieta es una de las condiciones, objetivos o sugerencias básicas en el manejo del paciente.

¿Cuáles son los límites de conocimiento actuales en cuanto a la investigación de las alergias oculares? ¿Qué más esperamos aprender?

Es una pregunta muy difícil, ya que siempre hay algo que aprender. Nunca estamos contentos con los tratamientos o con las herramientas de diagnóstico. Una de las razones por las que he venido al Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega y a la FIO es para reunirme con el Dr. Jesús Merayo y con una empresa que está desarrollando herramientas para mejorar el diagnóstico de la alergia ocular y otras enfermedades de la superficie ocular. Es un área que nos interesa, porque se trata de poder proporcionar herramientas más sencillas al médico de cabecera y al oftalmólogo general, no sólo para el experto, que permitan poder contar con un diagnóstico rápido y preciso para los trastornos de la superficie ocular en general y no sólo para las alergias.

Por supuesto, todavía necesitamos aprender cuáles son los mecanismos básicos de las causas de las alergias oculares, ya que la mayoría del tiempo, cuando realizamos las pruebas generales para la alergia, el problema es que son negativas o no encajan con el trastorno ocular concreto. Así que por un lado necesitamos herramientas buenas para el problema local y, por otro, todavía estamos investigando los mecanismos básicos para explicar y conocer por qué estos problemas pueden afectar sólo al ojo y no al resto del cuerpo.

This is a very hard question, there’s always something to learn. We’re never happy with the treatments or with the diagnosis tools. One of the reasons I’ve come to the Instituto Fernández-Vega and the FIO is to meet Dr Merayo and a company that is developing tools to improve the diagnosis for ocular allergy and other diseases of the ocular surface. This is an area of interest for us, because it entails delivering easier tools to the general practitioner and to the general ophthalmologist, no just to the expert, that will enable

There is what we call urban allergy, which is a type of conjunctivitis or even a respiratory condition that is more common in these areas, mainly in cities that have more pollution, as contaminants cause more irritation to the ocular surface and increase the sensitisation to

Por tanto, es seguro que en las áreas urbanas las enfermedades alérgicas son más frecuentes debido a los agentes químicos y a los contaminantes, sobre todo en los gases del diesel, que pueden irritar la superficie ocular.

This is therefore an overlap condition between allergy, dry eye and simple irritation. So it is definitely true that in urban areas allergy conditions are more common due to chemical agents and pollutants, especially diesel, which can irritate the ocular surface.

Do more people suffer from allergy nowadays?

Yes. One of the theories behind the increase in the prevalence and incidence of allergies is the fact that there is a better ocular hygiene; fewer infections during childhood, more vaccination, more cleaning.

These three factors affect the immune system to be more prone to react. So having fewer infections and a lower contact with bacteria makes the immune system less active, weaker and it develops a reaction against an allergen. This is one of the main reasons why the number of allergies has risen in the last 20 to 30 years, as well as the different environmental conditions, as we currently have a milder climate and longer seasons, at least in temperate countries, so pollen is present in the air for a longer time, overlap-

ping seasons. Now we barely have seasons, it’s either cold or hot. Pollen and pollutants are present during longer periods in the microenvironment and the environment.

What’s the main focus of your current research?

I’m still looking into the basic mechanisms that cause ocular allergies. I’ve got a project on heat-shock proteins, which is a family of proteins that are activated in a non-specific way and might cause inflammation.

I have another project on autophagy, a different system by which cells are killed in a particular pathologic condition; we believe that it might also be present in one of the mechanisms that cause inflammation.

Therefore, my main goal is still to find an appropriate treatment for patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis, which are those whom I see more frequently; these are kids who have a miserable life and make life miserable for their patients because they suffer and have symptoms for a long time during the year.

Therefore, my main projects are the treatment for severe cases, basic mechanisms and I’m also working in another project on a new way to treat infection with a device that might kill bacteria, but that is still under research.

Why did you decide to come to Oviedo to treat your eye health?

I came for the first time in 2006 for a check-up, due to the good references I had, and since then for everything relating my eyes.

A lifetime on stage and now the Teatro Real is paying you a surprise tribute on July 21.

Do you like surprises?

Yes! I love surprises, from the smallest one to this one, so important.

Fue siempre una gran defensora de la zarzuela. ¿Llegará algún día a dejar ese escaño de hermana menor?

La zarzuela ha estado siempre muy presente durante toda mi carrera. Desde que empecé mis primeras grabaciones con Columbia, muy joven, la he defendido y trabajado igual que cuando cantaba Mozart.

Si tuviera que escoger un aria, un autor, un teatro, un momento… ¿Con cuál se quedaría?

Con cada instante de todo lo que he hecho a lo largo de mis 55 años de carrera.

It hasn’t been disclosed who is going to sing, but we do know the repertoire: Mozart, Rossini, spanish operetta… Are they your favourite, or perhaps those in which you shone the most?

Indeed, Mozart and Rossini are the two composers who’ve had a greatest impact on my career; performing them I’ve achieved success and fame.

¿Sigue la temporada operística del Campoamor?

Como viajo mucho y paso poco tiempo en España, la puedo seguir a través de las revistas de ópera.

Creo que es una de las temporadas más importantes de nuestro país por el alto nivel de sus producciones e intérpretes.

You’ve always been a great advocate for spanish operetta. Will you ever step down from the big sister role?

Spanish operetta has always been very present during my career. Since I started my first recordings with Columbia, very young, I’ve stood up for it and worked as much as when I was singing Mozart.

¿Qué recuerdos guarda de sus actuaciones en Oviedo?

En Oviedo sólo he tenido posibilidad de cantar recitales, pero tanto el teatro como su público siempre me parecieron maravillosos.

If you had to chose an aria, an author, a theatre, a moment… Which would it be?

Every moment of everything I’ve done throughout my 55 years of career.

Do you follow Campoamor’s opera season?

As I travel a lot and spend very little time in Spain, I can only follow it through opera magazines. I think it is one of the most important seasons of our country due to the high level of its productions and performers.

What are your memories of your performances in Oviedo?

I’ve only been able to sing recitals in Oviedo, but I’ve always thought that both the theatre and its public were wonderful.

Hace cinco años recibió usted el reconocimiento de los Premios Líricos Teatro Campoamor a toda una carrera. Para alguien acostumbrada a obtener tantos galardones ¿qué significó éste? ¡Nunca me he acostumbrado a recibir premios! Para mí el mayor premio es haber podido cantar durante 55 años. Pero cualquier reconocimiento es siempre emocionante.

No es la primera vez que esta tierra le rinde homenaje. También obtuvo el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes. Parece claro que Asturias la quiere ¿Es recíproco? ¡Por supuesto! Yo quiero mucho a Asturias, a sus gentes y admiro mucho su historia y su cultura. Como bien dice, también yo aquí me siento muy querida.

Una de las distinciones de las que siempre habla con mayor orgullo es la de ser elegida miembro de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, convirtiéndose en la primera mujer en obtener tal reconocimiento. ¿Hay alguno que le hubiese gustado recibir y que se quedase en el tintero?

No, nunca espero ningún reconocimiento ni he estado pendiente de los que me podían dar. Como ya he dicho, todos lo que han llegado, en su momento, me han emocionado y concretamente ser elegida miembro de la Academia de Bellas Artes fue para mí muy importante.

Five years ago you received the recognition of the Premios Líricos Teatro Campoamor for your lifetime achievement. For someone used to receiving many awards, what did this one mean?

I’ve never gotten used to receiving awards! For me, the greatest prize is to have been able to sing for 55 years. But recognitions are always touching.

It’s not the first time that this lands pays you homage. You also received the Prince of Asturias Award for Arts. It seems clear that Asturias loves you, is it reciprocated?

Of course! I love Asturias and its people very much, and I admire its history and culture. As you say, I do feel very loved here.

You speak with special pride about being appointed member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (academy of fine arts), becoming the first woman to receive such recognition. Is there any recognition that you would have liked to receive and have failed to?

No, I never expect any recognition nor have I ever been awaiting any. As I’ve said, all those I’ve received, moved me at the time and specifically being appointed member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts was very important to me.

Who is your favourite director, under whose leadership would you sing anywhere and at any given moment?

If I had to chose, maybe Claudio Abbado.

Si tuviera que elegir, quizás Claudio Abbado.

Con sus 80 años recién cumplidos, usted cogió, sin duda, la época dorada de la lírica española, no sólo rompiendo moldes, sino formando parte de un elenco internacional de lujo. ¿Es inevitable que a la siguiente generación le cueste más seguir la estela?

No tendría por qué ser así. Hay cantantes jóvenes muy buenos.

Otros años, otros tiempos. ¿Es muy diferente la actividad musical de entonces y la de ahora?

Me es difícil opinar sobre esto pues yo hice mi carrera fuera de España.

Dice el refrán que el que tuvo, retuvo. ¿Qué tienen los cantantes líricos que retienen más que nadie? Kraus, Caballé, Pavarotti…, conservaron y conservan la voz por encima del tiempo.

La conservamos hasta cierto punto…

Una última pregunta. La ópera de Oviedo tiene fama de entendida ¿Le hubiera gustado interpretar en el Campoamor algo que, por las distintas programaciones, no le hubieran ofrecido?

Sí, me hubiera gustado cantar ópera en el Campoamor, pero nunca me invitaron, que yo sepa…

Having just turned 80, you lived the golden period or the spanish lyric, not only breaking moulds, but as an integral part of an internationally renowned cast. Will it be harder then, inevitably, for the next generation to follow your wake?

That need not be necessarily the case.

There are very good young singers.

Other years, other times. Is the musical activity from then and now really different?

It is difficult for me to have an opinion on this as I carved out my career abroad.

As the saying goes some things stay with you to the grave. What do lyric singers have to retain more than anyone else? Kraus, Caballé, Pavarotti…, they preserved and preserved their voices beyond time.

We preserve it up to a certain point…

One last question. The opera in Oviedo has a reputation for being knowledgeable.

Would you have liked to perform something at Campoamor that, due to different schedules, you weren’t offered?

La córnea es la pared exterior del ojo, que funciona además como lente.

Debe ser transparente y tener una curvatura adecuada para que las imágenes se proyecten correctamente en la retina. Existen diversas enfermedades como el queratocono, distrofias, cicatrices o cirugías corneales refractivas previas que pueden distorsionar la parte central de la córnea.

En estos casos puede ser necesario un trasplante para mejorar la visión.

Como la capa más profunda de la córnea no está afectada en estas situaciones, es imperativo tratar de preservarla. En el Instituto se utilizan técnicas lamelares como la DALK (Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty) o la PPK (Pseudochamber Protected Keratoplasty) que permiten mejorar la visión y conservar la integridad del globo ocular. La cirugía se realiza en varios pasos diferidos en el tiempo y reduce el riesgo de las complicaciones potenciales más graves del trasplante: hemorragia e infección.

El tejido afectado se extrae mediante la ayuda de un láser y una disección muy precisa, guiada por medidas ultrasónicas. Una vez que se ha creado un lecho adecuado, el nuevo tejido donante es suturado encima.

Entre tres y seis meses más tarde, cuando el nuevo tejido ha cicatrizado correctamente, comienza la rehabilitación visual. Este proceso consiste en optimizar el sistema óptico del ojo y adaptarlo a la nueva situación.

Pueden ser necesarias diversas intervenciones como retirada selectiva de puntos, cirugía láser, implante de segmentos intracorneales, lentes intraoculares tipo ICL o IOL, cirugía de catarata o adaptación de lentes de contacto personalizadas.

The cornea is the outer layer of the eye and it works as a lens. It must be transparent and have a suitable curvature to project the images properly in the retina. There are different conditions such as keratoconus, dystrophies, scars or previous refractive corneal procedures that may distort the central area of the cornea. In these cases, a transplant might be necessary to improve vision.

As the innermost layer of the cornea isn’t affected in these situations, it is imperative to strive to preserve it. At the Institute we use lamellar techniques like DALK

El Dr. José Alfonso, coordinador científico del Instituto y jefe del departamento de Cirugía Refractiva, Córnea y Segmento Anterior, ha sido uno de los pioneros mundiales en la combinación de diversas técnicas de cirugía refractiva con las cirugías innovadoras de trasplante corneal. Sus avances han sido reconocidos recientemente en el congreso de la Sociedad Española de Cirugía Implanto Refractiva (SECOIR) de la que, por cierto, es presidente.

(Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty) or PPK (Pseudochamber Protected Keratoplasty) that enable vision improvement and maintain the integrity of the eye. The procedure is carried out in several steps over time and decreases the risk of the most severe potential complications in transplant: haemorrhage and infection.

The affected tissue is removed with a laser and an ultrasound-guided precise dissection. Once an appropriate bed has been created, the donor’s tissue is sutured on top of it. Visual rehabilitation starts three to six months afterwards, when the new tissue has healed correctly.

The aim of this process is to optimise the optical system of the eye and to adapt it to the new situation. Several interventions might be necessary, i.e. selective removal of stitches, laser surgery, implantation of intracorneal segments, intracorneal lenses like ICL or IOL, cataract surgery or customised contact lenses adaptation.

Dr José Alfonso, scientific coordinator and head of the Cornea, Anterior Segment and Refractive Surgery Department, is one of the leading innovators in the combination of different refractive surgery techniques with innovative corneal transplant surgeries. His advances have been recently recognised at the conference of the Spanish Society of Ocular Implants and Refractive Surgery (SECOIR) of which he is, incidentally, president.

Estoy operada de cataratas desde hace aproximadamente año y medio. Al principio veía muy bien, pero desde hace unos meses he notado que pierdo vista. Tengo la sensación de ver nublado. ¿Es normal?

La pérdida de visión –si todo lo demás está bien (mácula, córnea, etc.), para lo cual sería preciso hacer una revisión completa- puede deberse a una opaci-

dad de la cápsula posterior, donde está incluida la lente intraocular, que sucede siempre con posterioridad a la cirugía. La solución es sencilla mediante la realización de una capsulotomía con Láser Yag, lo que se llama limpieza de la cápsula posterior. Se hace de forma ambulatoria y no es doloroso ni requiere posteriores cuidados especiales, excepto un tratamiento durante unos días con colirios antiinflamatorios.

vamos a ver Tengo miopía de casi seis dioptrías y la córnea fina. Me han dicho que no me puedo operar con láser. ¿Existen otras opciones?

En aquellos pacientes que presenten alguna alteración a nivel de la córnea (bajo espesor, queratocono, cicatrices…) o tienen muchas dioptrías, existe la posibilidad de implantar lentes intraoculares. Van colocadas entre el iris y el cristalino y se introducen a través de una incisión de unos tres milímetros que no es necesario suturar, con lo que se consigue corregir el defecto refractivo reduciendo el riesgo de provocar astigmatismo. La intervención se realiza con anestesia local y no precisa ingreso. ¿Se puede operar de estrabismo a todas las edades?

A partir de los tres años y siempre que sea un ángulo quirúrgico, no hay problema para hacer este tipo de cirugía.

Quisiera saber qué posibles fórmulas o tratamientos hay, o pueden ofrecer, para tratar la distrofia macular viteliforme de Best.

El problema por el que se interesa es una enfermedad genética que no tiene tratamiento. A ese respecto, solo se tratan las complicaciones asociadas, como las membranas neovasculares pero, en cualquier caso, lo primordial es contar con un buen diagnóstico.

Quisiera información acerca del tratamiento para la degeneración macular (húmeda) para mi padre de 80 años. ¿Existe alguna alternativa a las inyecciones intraoculares y vitaminas?

Hoy no se comercializa ninguna alternativa para solucionar el problema que comenta. Las inyecciones intraoculares constituyen el único tratamiento posible para tratar la degeneración macular húmeda por ahora y este es el procedimiento que se sigue, incluso en los ensayos clínicos.

Approximately one and a half years ago I underwent cataract surgery. At the beginning I saw really well, however, for a few months now, I’ve noticed that I’m loosing sight. I’ve got the feeling that my vision is clouded. Is this normal?

Vision loss –if everything else is ok (macula, cornea, etc.), and this would require a full checkup- may be caused by a posterior capsular opacification, where the intraocular lens is inserted, that always happens after surgery. It can be easily solved with a Yag laser capsulotomy, referred to as cleaning the posterior capsule. It is done in an outpatient setting and it isn’t painful nor does it require any special care afterwards, except for an anti-inflammatory eye drop treatment for a few days after the procedure.

I’ve got nearly 6 diopters of myopia and a thin cornea.

I’ve been told that I cannot undergo laser surgery.

Are there any other options?

For those patients with any corneal alterations (thin cornea, keratoconus, scars…) or many diopters, there is the option of implanting an intraocular lens. They are placed between the iris and the crystalline through an incision of approximately 3 millimetres that doesn’t need suture, correcting the refractive defect and reducing the risk of causing astigmatism. The procedure is done with local anaesthesia and doesn’t require hospitalisation.

Can strabismus surgery be performed at any age?

From the age of three onwards and whenever the surgical angle is appropriate, this kind of surgery can be performed.

I would like to know what potential formulae or treatments exist, or you can offer, to treat Best vitelliform macular dystrophy.

The condition that you are inquiring about is a genetic disease that has no treatment. In that regard, we can only treat the complications associated to it, such as neovascular membranes but, in any case, it is crucial to have an accurate diagnosis.

I would like information on the treatment for (humid) macular degeneration for my 80-year-old father. Is there any alternative to intraocular injections and vitamins?

There is currently no treatment on the market to solve the problem that you mention. For the time being, intraocular injections are the only possible treatment for humid macular degeneration and this is the procedure followed, even in clinical trials.

La verdad es que pocos animales han experimentado un cambio de imagen tan drástico como el de los osos pardos que viven en libertad en las montañas de Asturias. Claro que, en primer lugar, ellos –los osos- no se habrán enterado mucho, aunque seguramente algo sí; de ahí que cada vez se dejen observar más tiempo en las horas centrales del día y en las proximidades de los pueblos de montaña, e incluso de localidades con cierta entidad urbana y cerca de grandes infraestructuras de comunicación. Todo ello está generando un debate social sobre la conveniencia o no de promover los avistamientos en el campo, pues algunas empresas turísticas comienzan a ofertar sus servicios como guías e, incluso, algunas ONG’s en teoría sin ánimo de lucro ven en este negocio la forma de recuperar sus, generalmente, depauperadas economías.

The truth is that few animals have experienced such a dramatic change of image as the brown bears that live freely in the mountains of Asturias. Of course, bears themselves won’t have noticed it that much, maybe just a little bit; maybe this is why they let themselves be seen for longer periods of time during daytime and close to mountain towns and certain urban communities and close to major road infrastructures. All this has generated a public debate on the convenience or lack of it of promoting sightings in the countryside, as some tourist companies are starting to offer their services as guides, and even some –in theory non profit- NGO’s see in this business a way of recovering their, usually, impoverished economies.

El oso pardo, una de las grandes joyas de la fauna que se conservan en el Paraíso Natural asturiano, declarado como especie en peligro de extinción en toda España, ha pasado a lo largo de su historia natural por múltiples vicisitudes que le han llevado de ser un animal temido, acosado y perseguido a constituir el emblema de la conservación de la naturalidad de nuestros ecosistemas terrestres y, por tanto, de la salud de la tierra en que vivimos.

Objeto de veneración en los tiempos prehistóricos, de forma que nuestros antepasados dejaron plasmados en pinturas y grabados rupestres imágenes de este gran hermano, hasta símbolo de poder de reyes y señores feudales que se reservaban en exclusiva su caza, en algunos casos como el de nuestro Favila –leyenda o realidad- con resultados francamente nefastos para el propio rey allá por el ya lejano 793, el oso pardo pasó por otras múltiples situaciones hasta nuestros días.

Como símbolo de una tierra agreste y casi hostil, algunos viajeros extranjeros que nos visitaron dejaron testimonio de sus temores; así el botánico Michel Charles Durieu de Maisonneuve que recorrió gran parte de la Asturias occidental en 1835, manifestó que ningún

lugareño se atrevió a guiarle a los grandes bosques de Cangas del Narcea –Muniellos, concretamente- pues eran morada de grandes fieras como osos, lobos y linces y que sólo el recuerdo de sus seres queridos le animó a emprender su expedición en solitario. Otro francés, Alexander Holynski, en su obra de 1843, Coup d’oeil sur les Asturies, al referirse a las montañas de Pajares escribe: “Durante seis meses del año, cuando el frío amontona las nieves, los osos son los negros demonios que reinan en estos lugares”.

The brown bear, one of the great jewels of the wildlife that can be found in the asturian Natural Paradise, declared an endangered species across Spain, has endured throughout its natural history multiple vicissitudes that have turned it from a feared, hounded and hunted animal into the emblem of the safeguarding of our land ecosystems and, therefore, of the health of the land we inhabit.

From object of veneration in prehistoric times, so that so that our ancestors left depictions of images of this big brother in cave paintings and engravings, to a symbol of power for kings and feudal lords who reserved exclusively for themselves its hunting, in some cases, like that of our Favila –legend or reality- with really poor results for the king back in 793; the brown bear has endured many other situations to the present day.

As a symbol of a rural, nearly hostile land, some foreign travellers that visited us left testimony of their fears. In this way, botanic Michel Charles Durieu de Maisonneuve, who travelled extensively through the west of Asturias in 1835, stated that none of the natives dared

guide him into the great forests of Cangas del Narcea –Muniellos, specifically- as they were the dwellings of large beasts such as bears, wolves and lynx and that only the memory of his loved ones encouraged him to embark on a solo expedition. Another frenchman, Alexander Holynski, in his work of 1843, Coup d’oeil sur les Asturies, when referring to the mountains of Pajares wrote: “During six months every year, when cold accumulates snow, bears are the black demons that rule this regions”.

Folk imagery extolled the numerous hunters who took down bears when firearms were popularised, they were better known as vermin destroyers –a term that has been almost eradicated from popular lexicon nowadays-. The most famous is Xuan Díaz Faes, better known by his nickname Xuanón de Cabañaquinta (1821-1894), who is said to have killed no less than 99 bears, some of them using a knife. His fame awarded him an invitation from Alfonso II to several hunts and he would become mayor of the council of Aller.

La imaginería popular llegó a ensalzar a los numerosos cazadores que abatían osos con la popularización de las armas de fuego, conocidos más bien como alimañeros –palabra hoy en día casi erradicada del vocabulario popular-, siendo el más sonado de todos Xuan Díaz Faes, más conocido por el sobrenombre de Xuanón de Cabañaquinta (1821-1894), del que se dice que mató la nada despreciable cifra de 99, algunos de ellos a cuchillo. Su fama le hizo ser invitado por el rey Alfonso XII a varias cacerías y terminaría su vida como alcalde del concejo de Aller.

Tanta persecución de la entonces alimaña, no sólo con armas, sino también con la utilización de venenos y su posterior declaración como especie cinegética hasta la prohibición de su caza en 1973, condujo a nuestros osos a una situación desesperada hasta el punto que los profesionales de su estudio y los naturalistas aventuraban su desaparición en nuestra montañas antes de que finalizara el siglo XX. Su catalogación como especie protegida, la indemnización –generosade los daños producidos a las economías campesinas y las continuas campañas de sensibilización social abordadas, tanto por las diferentes administraciones como por diversas ONGs conservacionistas, han cambiado esa imagen de fiera salvaje a extinguir por la de un animal con el que se puede convivir sin grandes conflictos.

Así las cosas, la población de osos comenzó a crecer en la cordillera Cantábrica en general y en Asturias en particular por lo que, como decíamos al inicio de este artículo, los avistamientos son cada día más frecuentes y los observadores interesados mucho más numerosos, con lo que nuestros osos no tardarán en requerir otro modelo de gestión que evite las molestias, sobre todo a las osas con las crías recién salidas de las oseras, pues necesitan mucha tranquilidad y abundante tiempo de estancia en pequeños lugares para no ser atacadas por los grandes machos que llegan a sacrificar a los esbardos para que sus madres vuelvan a entrar en celo.

This being so, the bear population started to increase in the Cantabrian mountain chain in general and in Asturias specifically so, as we mentioned at the beginning, sightings are becoming more frequent and there is a growing num-

Por otra parte, nadie debiera olvidar que los osos pardos son animales muy fuertes con gran capacidad de hacer daño a las personas si se encuentran acosados o perseguidos, por ello la previsible masificación turística para su observación debería evitar cualquier intento de aproximación a los animales para tomar fotografías de mejor calidad o simplemente como un acto de envalentonamiento tan típico de personajes irresponsables. Tampoco debemos perder de vista que estamos ante una especie en peligro de extinción y que muchos de los factores que la llevaron a esa situación aún siguen vigentes a pesar de tantos años de esfuerzos, como para generar nuevos factores de desestabilización.

A new regional legislation is urgently needed to manage an emerging activity that is in danger of turning into something anarchic that would never directly benefit our most emblematic species but that would place it once more in a situation of social reject and a demographic situation that it has already surmounted.

La hostelería asturiana acaba de perder al que tal vez fuera el último representante de una especie singular y que Víctor Bango Vega encarnaba como ningún otro: el mesonero astur como prototipo de paisano de la tierra y todo lo que esa figura comporta o comportaba

Hubo otros muchos antes que él y todos fueron distantes, adustos, secos, cortantes, sentenciosos y mandones, con mucho mando en plaza, es decir en su casa. Víctor Bango, al que todo Gijón conocía por Vitorón porque era alto, fornido y de voz fuerte, adornaba su figura con un rasgo distintivo. Como buen playu –que es como se conoce en la región a los gijoneses más auténticos- lucía la vena socarrona y expresiva que distinguió en otros tiempos a hombres y mujeres del mundo de la pesca. Así que, a diferencia de sus iguales, ejercitaba de continuo un humor y una locuacidad un poco exhibicionistas que reclamaban siempre público y atención. The catering industry in Asturias has recently lost perhaps the last representative of a unique species, one that Víctor Bango Vega embodied like no other: the asturian tavern keeper as the image of the paisano (country folk) of the area and everything that this figure entails or entailed.

There were many before him, all of them distant, sullen, curt, sharp, judgmental and bossy, fully in charge at home. Víctor Bango, known in Gijón as Vitorón because he was tall, well-built and had a strong voice, decorated his figure with a distinctive feature. Like a good playu –name given in the region

to the most genuine people from Gijón- he sported the sarcastic and expressive streak that distinguished in the past men and women in the fishing world. So, in contrast to his peers, there was always some showmanship in his humour and loquacity that turned into a public claim and called for attention.

Vitorón had found the perfect formula to thrive in a business that his father, an old emigrant to the stoves of New Yourk, had opened in 1933 in the neighbourhood of El Carmen in Gijón, one of the most traditional areas located in the heart of the city.

The cider-bar that Víctor Bango inherited from his parents –he owed the best of his homemade dishes to Pacita, a mother’s touch- would become in time one of the most emblematic restaurants in Asturias thanks to the command that Vitorón had of all that was sea-related –obviously fish and seafood, but also everything that was connected to nautical activitiesand to the overall product quality. Víctor Bango’s special way of being, his way of selling his house and himself, probably without any extra effort, just by being himself, contributed to this success.

As a self-defined “bourgeois anarchist not fully in charge” and professional of the aforementioned playu humour, I guess he understood that the joking tone was precisely what his listeners, once used to it, were expecting. On some occasions he came close to a Groucho Marx of the asturian catering industry who had to come on stage so that he wouldn’t disappoint those who had bought a ticket: “I’m sitting here, observing the world, and I crack up when I realise what people are thinking” –What are you thinking?

–“Nothing. I like talking to intelligent people, but there are so few of them that I have no choice but to speak for only an hour each day, with myself.” Or “I started as a joke [to cook] and then I had to take it seriously. I had planned to live at the expense of my parents until I could live at the expense of my children, but the latter didn’t turn out so well, so I kept cooking”. And also “a good restaurant and a good physician are similar in that they are occasionally wrong; those which are bad are occasionally right” and “I’ve always got along really well with my employees: I don’t give, but I offer them a lot”, he admitted to writer Cuca Alonso in 2010, to whom he also declared to be “58 years and an estrapallada –overwhelming amount- of months old” at his 75.

El bar-sidrería que Víctor Bango heredó de sus padres –a Pacita, mano de madre, le debió lo mejor de sus guisos caseros- llegaría a ser en su momento uno de los restaurantes emblemáticos de Asturias gracias al dominio de Vitorón en las cosas de la mar –pescados y mariscos, claro, pero también de todo cuanto se relacionaba con las actividades marineras- y en la calidad de los productos en general, a lo que contribuyó de manera especial la forma de estar en el mundo de Víctor Bango, la forma de vender su casa y de venderse a sí mismo, probablemente sin el menor esfuerzo añadido, simplemente siendo él mismo.

Autodefinido como “un ácrata burgués sin mando en plaza” y profesional del mentado humor playu, imagino que entendió que el tono de chanza y sentencia era justamente lo que ya estaban esperando sus oyentes, una vez acostumbrados. De forma que en

algunos momentos pudo aproximarse a un Groucho Marx de la hostelería asturiana que tenía que salir a escena cada día para no defraudar a quienes habían pagado entrada: “Soy uno que está aquí, analizando el mundo, y me parto de risa al comprobar lo que piensa la gente” –¿Qué piensa?- “Nada. A mí me gusta hablar con personas inteligentes, pero son tan pocas que no me queda más remedio que hablar sólo una hora al día, conmigo mismo”. O bien “empecé en broma –a cocinar- y tuve que tomarlo en serio. Tenía programado vivir de mis padres hasta que pudiera hacerlo a costa de los hijos, pero esto último no me salió muy bien, así que seguí cocinando”. Y también “un buen restaurante y un buen médico se parecen en que se equivocan alguna vez; los malos aciertan alguna vez” y “siempre me llevé muy bien con mis empleados: no les doy, pero les ofrezco mucho”, le confesó a la escritora Cuca Alonso en 2010, a la que también declaró “58 años y una estrapallada de meses” a sus 75.

Aún conservó una etiqueta que me regaló allá a finales de los setenta.

La había ideado para bautizar el vino de la casa, un rioja de cosecha, modesto pero gustoso: Vega Sencilla, lo llamó. Con esta leyenda: “Cosecha 197 y pico”; una becada de largo pico era la imagen del cazador experto que fue y que la ilustraba. No tenemos medalles por no nos atrever a presentar nuestros vinos en ninguna exposición. De esta cosecha se escogieron miles de botelles. Todes tienen el número de teléfono de la casa. Nº 350093. El gerente, Víctor Bango. Como el diseño recordaba bastante al de las botellas de Vega Sicilia, esta firma, desconociendo el espíritu de Vitorón, no tardó en exigir la retirada, algo que el buen playu encajaría con absoluta deportividad.

Falleció en la ciudad que le hizo suyo –había nacido en el vecino concejo de Carreño- el 7 de febrero de 2013 y es muy probable que se haya llevado con él toda su gran sapiencia culinaria y, desde luego, todo su arte escénico. Gijón y Asturias sin Vitorón, ni heredero gastronómico de su bagaje, ya no serán lo mismo.

I’ve still got a label that he gave me in the late 70’s. He had designed it to baptise the house wine, from the harvest in La Rioja, modest but tasty: Vega Sencilla, he named it.

With this legend –written to look like Asturia-: “From the harvest of 197” and then some, the illustrating image was a long beaked woodcock, picture of the expert hunter that he was. We do not have medals because we do not dare to enter our wines to any exposition.

Thousands of bottles were chosen from this harvest. All have the house telephone. Nº 350093. The manager, Víctor Bango. As the design was quite reminiscent of that of the Vega Sicilia bottles, this firm, unaware of the spirit of Vitorón, didn’t take long to call for their immediate withdrawal, something that the good playu took with great sportsmanship.

He died in the city that made him its own –he was born in he nearby council of Carreño- the 7th of February, 2013 and it is very likely that he’s taken with him all his culinary wisdom and, indeed, all his performing art. Gijón and Asturias, without Vitorón, nor a culinary heir of his competence, will never be the same.

JOHNNY DEPP A los 50 años uno tiene la cara que se merece. Puede que al mirarse al espejo el reconocimiento no sea inmediato, tanto se mezcla nuestra imagen real con el chiquillo que fuimos y el atractivo galán de cine que soñamos ser. Pero no hay vuelta de hoja: ese tipo que te mira desde el otro lado de la realidad eres tú, y no habrá cirujano que consiga enmendar el feroz estrago del tiempo. Llegado a su medio siglo de vida ¿con qué cara se encontrará Johnny Depp cuando se enfrenta a sí mismo cada mañana? Porque ni siquiera los más afortunados de Hollywood, los que tienen un puesto en la eternidad, han podido hacerse con el codiciado espejo de la madrastra que mentía al ser preguntado por la reina más mona del castillo. No, el espejo de las estrellas es tan poco clemente como el del resto de los mortales, y menos clemente conforme pasan los años.

Imaginemos a Johnny recién levantado, sin el artificio inventado para él por los directores que tantas identidades le han regalado a lo largo de su asombrosa carrera en la pantalla, especialmente Tim Burton.

Imaginemos al héroe con su medio siglo a cuestas,

buscando su verdadero rostro entre los rasgos prestados por personajes que aprovecharon para buscarse un hueco en su propia cara: un poco del tierno Manostijeras, otro poco del estrafalario Willy Wonka, el gesto alucinado de Sweeney Todd y las muecas desquiciadas del capitán Jack Sparrow. Por allí andan todos ellos, como funambulistas, caminando en precario equilibrio por el fino hilo de sus arrugas. No debe de ser fácil pedirles que se callen, que se estén quietos, toda vez que estas fantásticas caricaturas son de verbo fácil y propensas al alboroto.

Días habrá en los que el actor los deje hacer, resignado a tener monos en la cara, tal vez agradecido de que, entre todos, le hayan dado carácter a su primer medio siglo de rostro. Pero otros días, después de lavarse con agua y jabón, buscará en su mirada al Johnny original, tan parecido a aquel enigma sin maquillaje, sin tics y sin historia llamado Gilbert Grape. Y se verá a sí mismo, ya cincuentón, sonriendo al otro lado del espejo.

Maybe recognition is not immediate when looking at the mirror, as our real image is so mixed with that of the kid we used to be and the attractive gentleman from the cinema that we dream to be. But there’s no way around it: that guy who looks back at you from the other side of reality is you, and no surgeon will be able to remedy the ferocious havoc brought by time.

Now on his half a century of life, what face will Johnny Depp find when he looks in the mirror each morning? Because not even the luckiest ones of Hollywood, those who have a place in eternity, have been able to get hold of the coveted mirror of the step-mother that lied when asked who was the prettiest queen of the castle. No, the mirrors of the stars show as little mercy as those belonging to the rest of mortals, and less mercy as years go by.

Lets imagine Johnny first thing in the morning, without the disguise invented for him by the directors who have given him so many identities throughout his amazing big-screen career, especially Tim Burton.

Lets imagine the hero with his 50 years on his shoulders, looking for his real face amongst the features lent to him by characters that have taken the opportunity to find a place in his face: a little of sweet Edward Scissorhands, a little of the eccentric Willy Wonka, the baffled expression of Sweeney Todd and the unhinged faces of Captain Jack Sparrow. They are all there, as funambulists, walking in precarious balance on the thin wire of his wrinkles. It can’t be easy to ask them to be silent, to stay put, when these excellent caricatures talk with ease and are prone to fuss.

Some days the actor will let them be, resigned to have something on his face, maybe grateful to all of them for, together, having added character to his first 50 years of face. But other days, after washing himself with water and soap, he will look for the original Johnny in his eyes, so similar to that enigma without make-up, without tics or history called Gilbert Grape.

And he will see himself, in his fifties, smiling at the other side of the mirror.
