Artist Profile: Vewn

Vewn
Vewn (aka Victoria Vincent) is a Los Angeles based artist best known for her video animations. She created her youtube channel in 2015, and has since amassed over one million subscribers. Her animations often center around adolescence and portray childhood through a distorted lens. Her artstyle, with its messy lines and bright colors emulates the drawings of young children, yet they display more mature themes. The combination of minimal dialogue, disctincive artstyle, strange camera angles, and original music make Vewn's animations unique. Recently, Vewn directed an episode for Netflix's "We The People, " featuring an original animation. Vewn's work is only continuing to gain commercial success as Fox Studios has taken in a project headed by the artist herself. Though Vewn's work is now appearing on larger platforms, her videos on Youtube have their own plotlines and distinctive themes.

The short animation "Twins in Paradise" follows two twin sisters, Marcy and Darcy, who are dealing with the loss of their mother while also maintaining their tennis careers. All the while, the world is literally ending, but they don't seem to know or care. Marcy throws herself into tennis and chooses to ignore her feelings about her mother. On the other hand, Darcy drowns out the real world with pills and lives inside an imaginary dreamland where her, Marcy and their mother are happy together. On their game day, Darcy overdoses on her medication and ends up in the hospital. During a mental breakdown, Marcy takes her sister's pills and is also hospitalized. It is only when they're both in the hospital that they can live as normal girls and foster their relationship with one another. The original score by artist R.I.P (who has worked on various projects with Vewn) sets a psychedelic atmosphere. As a nuclear bomb falls onto earth, the sisters embrace. This 9-minute animation delves into complicated themes of familial ties, loss, and selfimage. Much like Vewn's other animations, the fantasy world she creates explores real-life themes.
