The Science Of Sweat You have between 3 and 4 MILLION sweat glands all over your body – from the backs of your knees to the crook of your elbow to the small of your back, even in the palms of your hands… and of course, in your underarms. If you’re a woman, you have more sweat glands; if you’re a man, your sweat glands are more active.

As with every function that our body has, every person sweats differently.

Underarm sweat is produced through two different types of glands: the eccrine gland that produces the watery fluid we know as sweat, and the apocrine gland produces the liquid that typically gives underarm perspiration its odor. The fluid that the eccrine gland produces doesn’t smell – it’s made solely of water, sodium and chloride (or salt). The purpose of these sweat glands is simply to cool you off – when it’s hot outside, when you’re exercising or doing other strenuous activities, or if you’re running a fever.

If your body heats up too much, you’ll sweat to release excess heat and keep your core temperature at a steady rate. The way this happens is that heat is taken away from your body during the evaporation process – which means the hotter you are, the more you need to sweat to keep your body temperature regulated.

In order for sweating to work the way it’s supposed to, the air outside your body can’t be very humid - If you’re working outside on a hot, humid day, you’ll notice that your shirt is getting wetter and sweat may

Some people barely sweat at all… while others can sweat as much as four to five times as much as the “normal” person. As you probably know, there comes a point when excessive sweating produces the opposite effect than it’s intended to. “Normal” Sweating is Extremely Variable There are natural variations in the amount that people sweat: some people start sweating earlier than others, and some have more active sweat glands. There are many reasons for excess sweating, like: • • • • • • • • •

No matter what the reason, sweating isn’t fun. And when you sweat a lot… it can be embarrassing, socially limiting, and costly to deal with.

Hyperhidrosis is the clinical term for excessive sweating. But not everyone who sweats a lot is diagnosed with hyperhidrosis.

Surgery There is a lot of discussion about the option of surgery to treat excessive underarm sweating – and not all of the discussion is positive.

Surgery works by removing or destroying the sweat glands under your arms. There are many different methods, and the one you choose depends on the doctor you visit. However, since sweat glands are very small, they’re difficult to see… and this means that the surgeon is going in “blind.”

This can lead to a wide variety of results, and may lead to further surgeries to fully correct your sweating.

Surgery comes with its own risks, as it’s the most invasive of techniques and comes with the longest amount of downtime… and there’s still that possibility that it won’t stop you from sweating completely.

Like we discussed earlier in this book, there are a lot of treatments… but they’re either extremely risky and painful or they’re temporary.

I have suffered from excessive underarm sweat (Hyperhidrosis) since high school. As far as treatments go, I have tried every deodorant on the market with no success. I have also tried Drysol - which didn’t work either.

ABOUT

Dr. John Hopkins I am 19 years old and have been suffering from severe hyperhidrosis for the past 7 years. I have tried all of the over the counter products and the special deodorants, even being prescribed special topical ointments, but nothing was stopping the amount of sweat I was producing. I always kept another shirt in my bag because I knew I would have to change my clothes after sitting in an air conditioned room watching T.V...that’s how bad it was.

My closet all throughout middle school and high school was limited to black and white, because those were the easiest colors to mask the stains---and white shirts would go quicker than the black ones because of the nasty yellow stains that would develop after only a few wears. Shopping for a prom dress was a nightmare because I needed to find a cut of dress that wouldn’t be in my sweats way as it would run down my arm just when putting my makeup on.
