The Lightning Thief Series

Scott’s class Nicholas, Teddy and Mark are leading the way. I can’t wait to see who wins!

The Lightning Thief series is the best book series I have ever read. Each book is written by Rick Riordan and each book is action packed, funny, adventurous, and suspenseful. There are five books in the series. The first one is The Lightning Thief. In this book, Percy, the protagonist, is blamed for stealing Zeus’s master bolt. He goes on a quest with his friends Grover, a satyr, who is a goat in search of the god of nature, Pan, and Annabeth, daughter of Athena.

The second book is The Sea of Monsters. Here Grover is trapped in a cave by a Cyclops called Polyphemus. Percy and Annabeth must go save him before Polyphemus eats him. Look to next week’s edition of The Blue and Gold Times for the continued review of this series.

Fantasy Football

If you are a fifth grade Fantasy Football owner this is the article for you. If you have Randy Moss on your fantasy football team, then I would bench him. Rashard Mendenhall has a great year so far especially last week when he ran for 79 yards and 2 touchdowns. Arian Foster is playing extremely well and the best part is that he costs so little. Tom Brady is not having an amazing year so far but a decent one. Even though last week the Patriots crushed the Dolphins, he did not get many points and only threw for 159 yards and 1 TD. Fantasy Football has been such a great time. I especially like competing with my classmates. In Mrs. McLellan’s class, Jackson, Spencer and Clem lead the way, and in Ms.Youksee’s class, Walker, Dylan, and Finn lead the way. In Mr.

In fourth and fifth grade there are two groups of students on The Recycling Team. The Terracycle group recycles Frito-Lay bags and Capri-Sun pouches, and the other recycling group recycles regular paper. Both groups meet every Wednesday at Flop. The Terracycle group goes around the school collecting Frito-Lay bags and Capri-Sun pouches then sends them to Terracycle which recycles them into bags, pencil pouches and other things, and they also give us 2 cents for every recycled bag and pouch we send them. This money is then donated to a charity of our choice. The students in charge of paper recycling go around the school to their assigned spots around campus and recycle regular paper into the green bins around school. Please remember to recycle!

5th Grade Indoor Sports

During our last three indoor sports we have played bombardment, had a basketball relay, and played gauntlet. Fifth graders were divided into those who play football vs. those who play soccer. In the first gauntlet game it looked like it was going to end in a tie but Charlie Hibben got a game winning last person run to win the game for football. In the bombardment games it was pretty close, but football won 2 of the 3 games thanks to Finn Harding, Chewy Bruni, and Zack Goorno. In the basketball relay it was tied up for a little while, then football got ahead by a person, and then soccer got ahead by two people. But ultimately football came back and won.

The Arts

It is a very exciting year in the arts department. In art, we are going to start making masks by putting plaster on each other’s faces.

Then we are going to decorate them. In music, we are starting keyboards, and our first song is Ode to Joy. In drama, boys are working on the play, The Bridge to the Killibog Fair. It is based in Ireland, and is about an angry leprechaun who is mad at people for stealing his shamrocks. The other classes’ play is about two twin boys who are very poor. One day, they go to a marketplace in India and they find all sorts of vendors, at which point they decide to sell wisdom. In woodshop, boys are making their starter boxes.

The bigger project is a Shaker shelf which will take up most of the kids’ woodshop year. The arts year is very exciting, and you should check out the boxes, plays, concerts, and masks!

Senate Elections

October 8, was the senate elections. It was very competitive with 14 pairs who ran in the fifth grade. Everybody gave a 1-3 minute speech about why they should be senators and what they would do. After all the speeches in Ms. Wei’s room, we headed to Mr. Byrd’s room to take votes. After a long wait of about 20 minutes, the votes were in. There was a runoff between Nicholas Steinert and Walker Davey vs.

Ali Sheikh and Conor Zachar. The candidates were very nervous. The conclusion would be made at the end of lunch. During lunch, students voted table by table. The answers were in and everybody was very ecstatic. After a loud drum roll Mr. Scott announced the winners. In fourth grade, Max Steinert and Owen Elton were elected senators and in the fifth grade the winners were Walker Davey and Nicholas Steinert. Congratulations to the winners and to all who ran.

Pump up the Volume WIQH

This is Charlie Fitzsimmons current Fenn radio member. Last year the Fenn radio went great. There was one show every month on a Tuesday. A day or two before a show, Mr. Rude and Mrs. Dupont tell you what you are assigned to do. You might have a permanent job as a host or techie. Jobs that are not permanent are interviewer, comedian, trivia person, sports announcer, and weather and week in weird.

Outside the recording studio is a lounge. It has a couch, computer and soda machine. Parents and siblings can come and sit in the lounge and hear the show outside the recording studio. We had our first show Tuesday, October 5th. It went great. We had a mystery guest, jokes and trivia.

Anyone is still welcome to join. A joke I said was, “What do polar bears and grapes have in common?” The Answer, “both are purple except for the polar bear.”

Fenn school band is going great so far!

Beginning band is working on learning to play together and 2nd year band is doing fine. Jazz band is sounding jazzy and concert band is getting ready as well for the upcoming concert on December 2nd, 2010. Hopefully everyone in the community can make it.

Halloween

Halloween is around the corner and everyone is excited. When asked about Halloween, Jackson Roderick’s response was, “I LOVE HALLOWEEN.” Some costumes we may see this year include a hobo, the headless horseman, Jason from the Friday the 13th movies and a hamburger. What are you going to be for Halloween?
