The Blue and Gold Times Breast Cancer Awareness

The breast cancer awareness drive is off to a good start. It is doing very well, but we still need some more donations. Overall, the whole school has raised about $300 which is good, but we still have a week to make more donations and we hope to raise more money. When you bring in your donation, either give it to your grade senators or to Mr. Scott and they will keep it safe and sound. Once you have made a donation, you will receive a pin to wear on Friday. We hope to raise about $500 so bring in your money!

Baseball Playoffs By: Chewy Bruni & Blayne Dee

What an amazing win by the Phillies on Thursday night. They beat the Giants 4-2 in a heartbreaker. The Giants would’ve clinched the National League Pennant if they had won.

In the ALCS the Yankees won a blowout on Wednesday against the Rangers who could have just clinched the American League Pennant.

Saturday night Yankees’ pitcher, Phil Hughes, will try to make a Game 7. If they win, two of the best playoff pitchers ever, Andy Pettite and Cliff Lee, will duel for the Pennant.

We predict that in the NLCS, the Giants will win in Game 6. In the ALCS, we predict the Rangers to win in Game 7. In the World Series, we predict the Rangers will win in 6 games.

Jason, Piper, and Leo. The story is told from each character’s perspective, and the perspective changes after every two chapters. Jason, Piper and Leo are chosen to go on a quest. Leo has a way with tools. Piper is supposedly Jason’s “girlfriend,” and Jason can control the air. In this epic journey they must rescue Juno, otherwise known as Hera, from the clutches of “The Mistress.” This book is very good, and we loved reading it. We also recommend this book to anyone who has read the Percy Jackson series and The Red Pyramid. If you liked these books, you will be astounded by this one!

5th Grade Drawing Champs

The 5th grade drawing contest happened recently, and I was dying to find out who won. It turned out that the winners were Jeremy Feininger in 1st place with a monkey drawing. In 2nd place was Jalen Winstanley with a bird drawing, and last, but certainly not least, in 3rd place was Scott (Charlie) Irving with a drawing of a Zombie hunter. All of them look pretty realistic to me. I could not choose a favorite because they all are so good. A lot of other people entered, but these three were the ones chosen by the 5th grade senators as the best and the ones that are posted on the wall outside of Mr. Scott’s office.

Book Review for The Lost Hero

October is MANPOWER MONTH! MANPOWER MONTH is a month where community members choose to walk, bike, scooter, skateboard or run instead of drive a car.

People have been doing all they can to reach our goal of 500 miles. We have had people ride their bikes to school, walk home, and walk or bike on the weekends instead of drive. We only have one

week left so get out and use that MANPOWER and help save the planet!

Need Advice? Ask Dylan and Paul

Q. I am a 4th grader, and I want to know the top 3 things to help me do well in school.

A. 1. Just be yourself and have fun. 2. Stay organized. That will help you keep your work together and you will almost always turn your homework in on time. 3. Get involved in the Fenn community and make as many friends as possible. If you ever need help, your friends will be there for you.

Carle. The show was hilarious and very cool. He made a variety of different bubbles and even put a fourth grader inside a bubble. The food was great. We had a big meal of spaghetti and meatballs complimented by a big salad and breadsticks. The dessert was a slice of oreo ice cream pie, DELICIOUS! At the end of the dinner, the bubble mania guy told us that there was a quarter on the bottom of some of our chairs and if you had one beneath your chair you got to take one of the inflatable animals home.

Overall the evening was great and entertaining.

Palm Trees

Q. How do I have fun at sports, even if I don’t like the sport?

A. Find someone who likes the sport, and try to get them to teach you a little more about it. Also, the coaches are there to help you, and I’m sure they would be happy to give you advice.

Q. What are some tips for paying attention in class?

A. Try to get interested in what the teacher is saying. He/she usually picks material that is interesting and fun, and you can almost always get interested. If your friend is distracting you, try to ignore him until the end of class. If you follow these tips, you will probably do pretty well.

Remember, if you have a question, you can write it on a piece of paper and put it in our question box, on the first floor of Thompson Hall, in Ms. Byron’s room.

Blue + Gold Dinner

Last week there was a big hit for the fourth and fifth graders. The Lower School had a blue and gold dinner! This year’s theme was underwater sea life. The “special entertainment” was a bubble mania performer named Casey

A few days ago, the fifth grade had a competition in their advisor groups. We were given materials such as a straw, a paper cup, rubber bands, paper, paperclips, giant pieces of chart paper, some pieces of tape, scissors, a pencil, and four note cards and asked to make the tallest free standing palm tree possible. The idea was to work on our teamwork skills as a way to prepare for our fifth grade Merrowvista trip in May. We had 10 minutes to make and plan and then 10 minutes to actually build the paper tree. I thought the hardest part was making the palm tree because when we were coming up with ideas we were imagining too much stuff that wouldn’t happen. Almost everyone used the cup as the base of the palm tree. Some groups stuck a hole in the cup and then rolled up some paper and stuck it through. Other groups rolled up some paper and taped it around the cup. In Mrs. Byron’s class the winning group was made up of Dylan Volman, Walker Davey, Paul Michaud and Charlie Fitzsimmons. What did they do?

Their group taped the paper around their cup to stabilize it and then they used the small piece of paper as the leaves and the rubber band as coconuts. It was smaller than all the other palm trees, but it stood with no one holding it.

Book Review on The Lightning Thief Series

Community Events to Remember

The Lightning Thief series is the best I have ever read so far. It is action packed, funny, adventurous, and suspenseful. There are five books in the series. The first one is The Lightning Thief, in which Percy, the protagonist, is blamed for stealing Zeus’s master bolt. He goes on a quest with his friends Grover the satyr, who is a goat in search of the god of nature, Pan, and Annabeth, daughter of Athena. The second book is The Sea of Monsters, in which Grover is trapped in a cave by a Cyclops called Polyphemus. Percy and Annabeth must go save him before Polyphemus eats him. The third book is The Titan’s Curse, where Annabeth falls into a pit and into the evil hands of Luke. Percy goes on a quest with Grover and the hunters of Artemis to find Annabeth. The fourth book is called The Battle of the Labyrinth, where Percy, Annabeth, and Grover try to warn Daedulas to not help Kronos’s forces. The last book is The Last Olympian where Percy must face the evil Lord of Time, Kronos. If you haven’t read The Lightning Thief series you have to read it. It is good for ages 8 to 15. It is a great series.



Re-cap on Fenn School Sports

So far The Fenn School sports teams are doing well. In soccer today Varsity soccer is playing a game against Shore. Varsity soccer is 31, so let’s see if they can go out and win to be 4-1.

3rd soccer is also doing extremely well and has a record of 4-1. Their coach, Star says, “they played some outstanding teams and played very well.”

Varsity football has started the year well too.

While they lost their first game, they won their second one and have a 1-1 record. Good luck to all the students who play today and for the remainder of the season.


