The Blue and Gold Times Bigger And Better by Chewy Bruni This year we are the leaders of the Lower School. Now I feel great because all the 4th graders look up to me! I love that since we are in the 5th grade we get more freedom. I asked Jacob Dudley, Finn Harding, and Spencer Pava how they like it and they said, “I like being in 5th grade because we are not new kids and we get to do a lot more fun stuff.” “I like it because we are the seniors of the lower school.”

Every 5th grader I asked loves being a 5th grader.

Fenn School Trebles

Trebles is a big group that works on singing songs together during Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. Mr. Salvatore is the leader of trebles. The people in trebles are lower school and middle school students. After you have mastered the songs, you have concerts with other acappella groups. You also go on special trips to Boston to go skating and out for pizza and sing in front of a lot of people. You may also get to go and sing at a Bruins game or a Blazers game. .

s tudents Start Your Engines

The beginning of the school year has started. The kids are edging into the year. The homework situation is small so far but it is starting to pile up. The teachers for the 5th grade are Mrs. Byron, Mr. Byrd, Mrs. Wei and Mrs. Starensier. After a couple of weeks, the kids have eased into the school year.

They are off to a great start on the road of 5th grade. There will be obstacles, but they will get past them either by themselves or with help from others.

There are a number of people who have signed up for the school senate. The arts classes have also started and the woodshop classes have begun to build their beginning boxes. In the drama department the kids are practicing staying in character, freezing and knowing the stage. In the music department the kids are singing songs and finally in the art department the kids are drawing and doing watercolors. Also the ground breaking for the new hall has happened.

The 5th graders are off to a great start.

It’s Time to Harvest by Anthony Duane Tuesday, September 21, Fenn School went to Gaining Ground. We harvested hot spicy peppers like jalapeno, habanera and other various types. Hal Groome and Chewy Bruni and Mark Gallant were the fifth graders that went to Gaining Ground and all of them wanted to try the habanera--unfortunately nobody did. Anyway, moving to a more brown matter like potatoes, Mrs. Smith and Mr.Oneill were pitch forking away stabbing potatoes. In the end we had a whole wheelbarrow full of potatoes, and I wondered how many mashed potatoes we could make with them.

Let the dirt fly! by Spencer Pava The Fenn School is building a new performance hall and a turf field. There will be a huge bell on the top and a balcony for the tech guys, for guests and for the trebles. Rob Hall will be a colossal library as early as 2012. Right now there is a fenced off area where students may not enter. Mr. Ward has made it very clear we may not go in the fenced in area. The groundbreaking ceremony happened on Friday when the band played and sounded fantastic. Mrs. Lien led the band as they played anchors away. Mark “Chewy” Bruni represented the 5th grade. After the ceremony, we had bulldozer shaped cookies which were amazing. The performance hall will be finished in November 2011.

Point of View: Mr. Scott by Paul Michaud I interviewed Mr. Scott, Head of the Lower School at Fenn, and 4th and 5th Grade math teacher. Here’s what he had to say: Q. What are the responsibilities of being the head of the Lower School?

A. I think one of the biggest responsibilities is to look out for the safety of Lower School boys and take action if they do not feel safe or comfortable. Another one is to support the faculty by doing whatever they need help with, such as answering a question or whatever they need.

Q. Is Math a fun subject to teach?

A. Yes. I have loved math since I was a little child and puzzles and games are a form of math that I adore. It comes easily to me, and from when I was little I knew if I was to teach, math was the subject for me.

Q. Do you think that Fenn is a great place to teach?

A. Fenn is a great place to teach! The one thing that I love about Fenn is that boys can be boys. I have taught at other schools, and the boys tend to act “cooler” to impress the girls, but since there are no girls to impress, boys are respected for their special skills. One example is that a student started an origami club, and no one considered it “uncool.” Fenn is a GREAT place!!

The Gameplan by Dylan Volman Hi I’m Dylan Volman, and I’m going to talk sports. On Wednesday September 22, Fenn’s Squad Soccer Team went out to face Beaver Hill and in a great game Fenn came out on top 8-0. What a great way to start off the Squad Soccer Team’s season. In other news, Fenn’s Track Team came in 2nd out of 3rd place. Nice job Track Team. On Thursday September 30, The Varsity Soccer Team topped Belmont Day 2-1 in a great battle. GO FENN. Return of the Iceman

by Jacob Dudley One day in the Alps, in 1991 on the Italian-Austrian border, two hikers were walking on an unmarked trail when suddenly they came across a body—it was The Iceman. For some reason they did not panic and scream. Instead they called 911 and told them about their discovery.

However, they did not bring digging tools, so they had to borrow a pick axe and two ski poles to dig the Iceman out. So while they were digging him out they weren't very careful because they thought it was just another dead hiker; they didn't know he was from 3,500 B.C. as he was one of the most well preserved bodies in the world! It was a very important discovery because it opened up a whole new portal to the past.

The Juggling Bonanza by Blayne Dee The Fenn School Juggling Club might be the most exciting club currently existing at Fenn. Some Fenn students come twice a month to practice their juggling. Mr. Rude is the leader of this juggling carnival and is trying to make it fun for everyone. It does not matter if you are bad at juggling because the reason for this club is to make you get better at juggling. I decided to interview Mr. Rude, and I learned a lot .During our interview he said, “I love juggling and I think it would be a good thing for the Cultural Arts Festival.” He also said that he likes to see people juggle four and five balls and that he gets his equipment from the Juggling store .com. So ask Mr. Rude to join the Juggling club now and you might become the clown you knew you were!

The Secret Stash by Walker Davey Fenn has a great school store. The school store is very popular. If you ever forget to bring your snack and you have some extra change, then head down to the school store! The school store has a wide variety of snacks. The snacks are Doritos, Lays Original Chips, Lays Sweet and Salty Chips, Oreos, Pretzels and Cheeze-its for 75 cents each. The school store also offers drinks if water bores you. There are Capri Suns for $1.00 each and vitamin water of your choice for $1.00 each. You can also buy a variety of school supplies at the school store. The school store is located right outside of Robb Hall and is open every day at recess until the bell is rung. I am very satisfied with all the snacks at the school store, and I think that everyone should buy some snacks from the school store.

Being the New Kid at Fenn by Willie Swift It is always awkward when you jump into something new like starting a new school like Fenn in the fifth grade. I think if I was going to set a fall goal it would definitely be to make new friends and to keep my old ones. I think the hardest part about going to a new school is when you see your old friends you try not to make them feel bad by telling them all the great things about your new school which unfortunately is my case. Well, I hope this gives you a feeling of what it is like being a new boy at Fenn. I think that Fenn will be a great new experience for me.

Going Bananas by Hal Groome Who needs school when you have an all you can eat buffet at the Fenn School in Concord, MA. From the delicious salad and fruit to everyone’s favorite popcorn chicken, most people say Fenn has some of the best food in Concord. The daily routine is a buffet style sit down lunch, but the students prefer the beloved picnics where they can converse with their peers and sit wherever they want in the cafeteria or outside. At Fenn they have some pretty awesome lunches such as, chicken lo mein, pizza, and pasta. The chef, Mr. Cabral, and his crew do a fantastic job with our lunches. Some people say that they make even better food than at Nashoba Brooks, and that reminds me, I'm hungry, I want to go to lunch.
