MORLEY GLASS WINS ‘BEST

Uni-Blinds® integral blind manufacturer Morley Glass has won an award in the 2023 GGP Installer Awards in recognition of its free glass recycling service in conjunction with Saint-Gobain Glass, which enables installers to divert their waste glass away from landfill to raise money for good causes.

The company was named the winner of the ‘Best Installer Support Programme or Service Initiative’ award at a prestigious ceremony in Manchester, with the judging panel saying that “this initiative is something the industry has been crying out for”.

The awards judges praised the scheme, which enables window and door installers to send their post-consumer glass – removed during window replacement work – to Morley Glass, so it can be crushed at its in-house recycling plant. The glass cullet that results is then sent to Saint-Gobain Glass for use in the manufacture of new glass.

All the money raised through the supply of the glass cullet, which is a valuable raw material in its own right, is diverted into a fund called GreenVision. This is then used to offer £500 grants to micro-initiatives and individuals whose work will improve the local community, environmentally or socially.

The glass recycling service provided by Morley Glass helps installers save money because they can reduce their waste disposal costs – with some installers who use the scheme estimating that savings can amount to thousands of pounds a year. Local communities and the environment win through the GreenVision grants provided, and Saint-Gobain Glass saves energy because adding cullet to the raw materials mix means less energy is needed in the manufacture of new glass compared with using only virgin raw materials.

Since Morley Glass installed its recycling plant in 2020, it has generated over 1,000 tonnes of cullet. This has reduced the amount of sand needed for glass manufacture by almost 1,000,000kg and cut CO2 emissions by over 340,000kg.

REHAU RECEIVES GOLD ECOVADIS RATING FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING

Leading polymer manufacturer REHAU Group has been awarded gold certification from the EcoVadis rating agency for its outstanding commitment to sustainability.

With a total of 71 out of a possible 100 points, the PVCu supplier has achieved the high standard for the second year running, placing it among the top five percent of all participating companies and the top two percent in the plastic products industry.

As the world’s largest provider of sustainability ratings for companies, EcoVadis certification shows how well REHAU Group has integrated sustainability principles into their business and management systems.

“Sustainability is an increasingly big talking point across all industries, so we are extremely proud to have been recognised at a gold standard by EcoVadis for the second year running, confirming the efforts we have made towards our own green journey,” commented Martin Hitchin, CEO of REHAU UK at REHAU Group UK. “We have made great strides towards ensuring a circular economy across the REHAU company.

Since 2020, REHAU have been members of the UN Global Compact Initiative, focusing on its corporate responsibility and its principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anticorruption. As part of this network, the manufacturer publishes a yearly report demonstrating the extent to which set principles are being implemented – areas of progression and areas of action.

In the most recently released report, covering REHAU’s 2021 sustainability targets, the PVCu suppliers continued to advance it’s green recycling methods. In particular, the proportion of recyclates in new products was increased significantly, which resulted in the meeting of 2025 targets ahead of schedule.

Martin concludes: “Sustainability has become even more of a key consideration over the past year as homeowners and business owners have become increasingly aware and concerned about how environmentally friendly their properties are. With ever-improving work towards green practices, we are confident that we can keep up with the evolving demands and offer solutions with a smaller environmental impact.”

GREENTEQ GETS A HANDLE ON BI-FOLDS

Hardware manufacturer, VBH, has expanded its range of bi-fold door handles with a new addition to the greenteQ SlimFold range.

The new internal/external handle set provides customers with the option to operate the door’s intermediate locks from both the inside and outside. The handle accepts a Euro profile cylinder for security.

VBH advise that, as with the existing internal-only SlimFold options, which are available with and without the provision of a cylinder hole, the new handle set stands just 17mm off the face of the door when inactive. The lever nestles into the base plate when not in use, allowing the sashes to stack closely together when fully open.

SlimFold is available in up to six colours of the greenteQ Suite to perfectly match or complement aluminium bifold door finishes.

Dan Powell, Head of Sales at VBH, tells us, “The greenteQ Suite is our very popular range of patio door, residential door and window furniture that is available in matching colours and styling to tie in a full house installation. We’re very pleased to have added this handle option to the Suite in time for the spring bi-fold boom.”

The handles feature ‘Lift & Turn’ technology. To open the door, the user simply pushes in the top of the lever to raise the bottom of the handle from its ‘nest’, and then turns the handle to unlock the door.

PETITION LAUNCHED REGULATIONS ON

In response to new Building Regulations that came into force in June 2022, requiring all window replacement installations to include trickle vents, a Government petition has been launched with the aim of reviewing these regulations.

“Go back to original regulations”

The petition, launched at the start of the year, aims to bounce the Government into rolling back the regulations they spent more than two years deliberating and consulting on.

This is the full description of the petition on the Government website:

Change the regulation of mandatory trickle vents and go back to the original regulations but with better education for consumers and window companies so people can advise and install them where necessary. But the choice should be the consumers and not mandatory by the government.

It’s completely unfair to half the population of competent companies + consumers who know how to use a window properly. The consumer should have a choice. If the company surveying the job is FENSA / Certass registered then they should be able to advise properly. Bad landlords + poor housing, resulting in condensation/mould problems are not going to be solved with trickle vents. Why should responsible homeowners lose their right to say yes or no to trickle vents being installed.

At the time of writing, there are 324 signatories on this petition. According to the rules of Government petitions, a threshold of 10,000 signatories is required to prompt a Government response.

LAUNCHED TO CHANGE ON TRICKLE VENTS

A larger threshold of 100,000 signatories is required before the Government will consider debating the issue in Parliament. It is worth noting that even if the 100,000 threshold is reached, there is no guarantee that the Government will put forward the petition to be debated. Unlikely to succeed

One of my biggest criticisms of the whole process around the new revisions to Building Regulations was the apathy shown by the sector towards the changes during the consultation phase. .

The sector only became motivated when it was clear that certain regulations would begin to have a direct impact on it. Namely, trickle vents. But at that point, it is too late to become involved in the discussion. That is why the Government launches consultation periods, in order for representatives within sectors to voice their concerns and thoughts with a view to shaping opinions and potential final decisions.

But in true fenestration sector style, we gave it very little attention, showing the powers that be that we were not motivated enough to care at the beginning of the process. So will this petition succeed in bringing the concerns of the sector around trickle vents to the door of the Government?

Based on our previous performance in coalescing around causes and concerns, I will hedge my bets and say no. We won’t get the numbers. There are around 14,000 companies within the entire UK fenestration sector, give or take. To get to the first threshold of a Government response, we will need at least one person from 10,000 companies to sign. Or at least get as many people from fewer companies than that to put their name to this.

At the moment, there are 324 names on the petition, which is open until July. It is going to require a gargantuan effort to even reach the first threshold. Our sector does not have a history of being able to mobilise in mass.

Whilst I understand that there remain many that are frustrated with the new trickle vent regulations, and there will be a can of worms that can never be unopened when it comes to enforcement of these new rules, the horse has very much bolted on this particular issue.

The time to act and talk was two years ago. We didn’t. The Government is now very much focused on Future Building Standard in 2025, where further revisions lower of minimum U-Values on newbuild homes is expected. If we want to shape the outcome of those particular decisions then it would be best if the sector could rally around this cause, rather than roll the previous revisions back.

Something which I believe there is no precedent for.

NEW YALE LOCKS AT VBH

Hardware supplier, VBH, has broadened its range of multi-point door locks with the introduction of the new Mantis 4 range from Yale.

VBH has been supplying Yale’s Mantis 3 lock for many years, and has enjoyed great success with the range.

The company advises that Mantis 4 builds on all the qualities of its predecessor, adding a number of new benefits to an already impressive list of features.

Mantis’s combination locking points pair a substantial chamfered hook and a tapered linear bolt that, according to VBH, provide an extremely smooth locking action. This is aided further by the inclusion of adjustable roller cams on variants for PVCu doors.

These combinations lock in to newly designed one piece keeps or ‘multi-keep’ individual keeps, to provide exceptional resistance to pull out, thanks to the positioning of the screw fixings. Mantis 4 locks have been tested to PAS24:2022, and are approved for use Q-secure installations and those requiring Document Q approval.

Marketing manager for VBH, Gary Gleeson, says, “VBH is rightly known in the industry as the supplier to go to for Yale’s Mantis door lock, and we’re very excited about the introduction of this latest version. We have considerable stock levels in place already.

THE SOLUTION TO UNATTRACTIVE TRICKLE VENTS: LINIAR’S SEAMLESS VENTED HEAD DRIP

Liniar, the UK’s leading PVCu systems company and a subsidiary of Quanex, is pleased to launch another UK-first – the patent pending vented head drip.

Available in white and foiled finishes, the new component offers a seamless colour finish which maintains the stylish appearance of windows and doors –and unlike other solutions, Liniar’s vent replaces the exterior trickle vent, rather than just covering it up.

A recent update to Part F building regulations requires the introduction of further ventilation to new and existing homes where upgrades and building works are being completed, which is being mostly achieved through the introduction of trickle vents. This has however caused issues for the industry, with their appearance being disliked by consumers as well as the availability of trickle vents themselves being a challenge.

Introducing an alternative that complies with current and future building regulations and also ensures a seamless finish, Liniar’s Design and Development Director Chris Armes comments, “As an industry, we spend a lot of time and effort creating products that are going to enhance the look of properties. Homeowners and installers alike aren’t keen on traditional trickle vents, as they can spoil the appearance of the finished products.”

Chris continues, “My team and I felt there had to be a more attractive alternative to the standard exterior trickle vent. We went to work designing a product that complies with the legislation, gives a seamless finish and can be foiled for a perfect match. Using our in-house 3D printer combined with flow analysis software and physical product testing, we developed Liniar’s vented head drip, an innovative way to eliminate the need for exterior trickle vents.”

Liniar’s vented head drip is manufactured in the UK and is fully tested to BS EN 13141-1, with a patent pending. The vented head drip can either be installed across the full length of the compatible windows and doors for enhanced weather performance or alternatively trimmed with end caps.

Chris concludes, “This latest product innovation is testament to Liniar’s commitment in helping our industry ensure compliance without compromise. This includes the standard outer frame, a version with a clip-on cill nose, alongside a ramped low threshold, which has been tested in-line with Part M requirements. There’s also a concealed zero threshold available, which is ideal for sheltered locations on projects looking for a seamless transition between spaces.

As with all Sheerline products, the Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door has been designed to offer high levels of security as standard, featuring a unique retracting hook-lock with flush keeps. Which reduces the risk of snagging clothing on protruding pegs.

The doors glide smoothly during operation because of the specially designed stainless-steel tracks and high-performance running gear. Dual and triple track options are available, which cover most requirements. To enhance the Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door, a patented sealing system has been incorporated to ensure the doors are weathertight against the worst of the UK’s weather.

Considerable design consideration was also given to ensuring interlocks were as slim as possible, while also maintaining the systems exceptional thermal credentials. The new Sheerline patio comes with a choice of standard interlocks with slim 80mm sightlines, as well as ultra-slim 52mm interlocks suitable for use on many popular styles.

One of the glazing industry’s most respected IGU manufacturers has invested in a state-of-the-art automated Super Spacer® application line.

Leicester-based Cleartherm were early adopters of the technology, becoming only the third UK company to acquire an automated Forel Super Spacer® hot melt line in 2006. Now, the innovative company have invested in a modern replacement, ensuring they will continue to offer quality, consistency, and speedy service for years to come.

“When we first started using Super Spacer, we applied it by hand,” explains Cleartherm Managing Director David Laing.
