WINKHAUS JOINS THE NATIONAL FENESTRATION AWARDS AS A MAIN SPONSOR Leading fenestration hardware producers, Winkhaus, have joined the National Fenestration Awards for the remainder of the 2023 campaign and whole of 2024 as a main sponsor. Winkhaus are a leading name in window and door locking solutions, with the incredibly popular AV2 and AV3 ranges setting the standard in the UK window and door market. The company has now launched its next evolution of that range, autoLock AV4. Boasting the widest operational tolerances to date, a 40% reduction in operational

force than the AV2 and increased operational efficiency, the AV4 builds on what made the AV2 so popular. The AV4 is also non-handed, which has led to a 50% reduction in parts making this a more efficient offering for suppliers. Naturally, the AV4 is compliant with the requirements of PAS24:2022 and Secured by Design and comes with a heritage option to suit more traditionally designed doors – perfect for the composite door market. The AV4 is also smart-tech compatible with the introduction of the EAV4+ motor later this year, again building on their already successful range of door motors. Winkhaus joins in the tenth anniversary

of the National Fenestration Awards, marking ten years of setting the standard when it comes to industry inclusion and participation. Speaking about Winkhaus joining the NFAs, the team commented: “Winkhaus are a marquee name both in Europe and the UK when it comes to window and door hardware. They dominate the residential door market with their high-quality products, and we are very excited to have such a fantastic company and brand on board. We are looking forward to partnering with them over the course of this campaign and the next!” Winkhaus commented: “The National Fenestration Awards has stood for inclusion and representation for years and has sought to bring the whole of the sector together to find the very best people and companies for the last decade. We’re excited to join the NFAs during this special milestone and look forward to promoting their positive message in the months ahead.” You can find out more about Winkhaus, their range of market-leading window and door hardware solutions, as well as their new AV4 range by visiting their website: https://www.winkhaus.co.uk/ Voting in the 2023 campaign closed on September 29th, with winners being

THE SHREWD CHOICE: HOW WINDOW AND DOOR SOLUTIONS IMPACT ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN HOUSEBUILDING Martin Benn, Head of New build at Eurocell, takes a look at how effective window and door solutions can help deliver the energy efficiency and sustainability enhancements that housebuilders are looking for – and consumers want – as the current regulatory landscape alters. The Future Homes Standard (FHS) is set to be introduced in 2025 and, with it, a step change for all stakeholders charged with transforming the UK’s housing stock so it is more energy efficient, more sustainable and, ultimately, low carbon. An immediate focus for housebuilders has been the introduction of changes to Part L 2021 of the Building Regulations, meaning many are now looking for the simplest and most cost-effective way to meet the new carbon reduction obligations. To make significant contributions to energy efficiency and sustainability progress, housebuilders can be supported in additional ways alongside emerging renewable technology systems, such as with window and door solutions. At Eurocell, we already have our Modus system, which is Future Homes ready and continues to lead the market.

or door. Removing the need for complex and expensive glazing specification, Modus, helps to lower the cost and impact of tackling the net zero carbon agenda for housebuilders and homeowners. Crucial in the journey to achieving net zero is a holistic approach from inception to completion, and forward thinking planning for how the end user will use the space. This means window and door solutions that not only meet the Future Homes Standard, but also exceed the usage requirements of the house buyers for years to come. Key benefits from using effective window and door solutions to deliver energy efficiency include: Use of energy efficient materials From manufacturing right through to installation, effective window and door products require less energy and provide opportunity for recycled material use. All Modus main profiles feature a minimum of 36%* post-consumer recycled PVC-U as standard. This helps to achieve a lower carbon footprint compared to products made or containing recycled material sourced from outside of the UK. The system deploys cutting-edge dual material extrusion technology (DMET) which layers post-consumer recycled and ‘virgin’ material simultaneously with high precision. The recycled material is concentrated in the central core of the profiles, where it is completely invisible in an installed window

Reduced air leakage Designing with better insulation materials and techniques can reduce heat and air leakage, resulting in less energy required to heat or cool the building. Modus is proven to deliver thermal insulation excellence, as well as air tightness and noise reduction benefits due to the uniquely designed 75mm six-chamber profile system which can achieve very low U-values with triple-glazed units. This improves the energy efficiency of a building as a whole because energy is being stored appropriately throughout the seasons, thus reducing the need for constant heating and cooling management. Altogether making the decision to install energy efficient window and door solutions particularly appealing for house buyers. Durability and longevity When products are designed to be more durable, this increased lifespan extends the benefits of lower energy consumption to also reduce the need and cost of labour for replacement. A key consideration when creating durable, long-lasting products is visual appeal to reduce product lifecycle when tastes or modern functionalities change. Creating timeless but contemporary designs are vital to allow the sector to build the homes people want to purchase and live in.

INSERT COASTAL YOUTUBE VIDEO

DOOR CARE & MAINTENANCE VIDEOS RELEASED External door and window hardware is under constant attack from environmental exposure, says Coastal Group Whether it’s polluted city air, corrosive salt air in coastal settings or continual exposure to the elements, external hardware has a lot more to deal with compared to internal hardware. With this in mind, the team at Coastal Group have launched a series of simple how-to videos, explaining the biggest headaches and demonstrating how to solve them. “Wherever your doors are installed, they will endure some sort of ‘attack’ from the elements,” says Loren Jenner, Managing Director at Coastal Group. “It’s not only the door furniture; it’s also the locks and cylinders, which can become clogged up with dirt and grime, drying out and becoming difficult to operate.” This daily wear and tear can affect the lifespan of doors and can even lead to callbacks from customers. “Callbacks are expensive, time consuming and can sometimes lead to negative reviews,” continues Loren. Neil Jones, Head of Marketing at Coastal, introduces some simple solutions: “The good news is that these challenges can easily be avoided. All it takes is a bit of regular TLC and maintenance with the right products.” Coastal Group considers the following three main issues in a series of simple how-to videos, available on their website, and detailed below: 1. Tea staining on the door hardware. 2. Keys sticking or jamming in the Euro cylinder. 3. Multipoint locks seizing up, jamming and making it difficult to operate the door handle. TeaStained Handle before cleaning

TeaStained Handle after DR121 cleaning

1. Tea-staining on the door hardware Tea staining often gets confused by the homeowner as rust, but 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel hardware – such as the BLU Hardware range – does not rust. Instead, it can discolour if not cared for. Tea staining is a cosmetic issue that takes place on contaminants sitting on the surface of the stainless steel. It does not affect the structural integrity or lifetime of the material, but can be unsightly. Door manufacturers, installers and homeowners will be relieved to know it can easily be avoided. As the name suggests, stainless steel is ‘stain less’ not ‘stain free’ and requires regular cleaning using a

soft cloth and mild soapy water to maintain a polished blemish-free finish. If the door is located in a more corrosive environment, or if tea staining has occurred, then Coastal recommend their DR121 stainless steel cleaner as a regular cleaner. This product has been proven to remove this staining quickly and effectively. 2. Keys sticking or jamming in the Euro cylinder Over time cylinders can become dried out or clogged up with dirt and grime. Some cylinders can also become corroded. These challenges combine to make the cylinder very difficult to operate and the key difficult to insert and turn around. The dormakaba cylinder spray makes it very easy to resolve this issue. A regular squirt into the cylinder cleans, lubricates and maintains it, providing trouble-free operation and helping to prevent corrosion. “Customers are often amazed at the difference it makes,” comments Neil. “It’s worth adding a word of caution here; cylinder manufacturers strongly advise against using other fluids or common aerosol lubricants such as WD40 as they can have detrimental effects on the cylinder.” 3. Multipoint locks seizing up, jamming, and making your door handle difficult to operate Again, over time the gearing in the multipoint lock can become dried out or clogged with dirt and grime. This makes the door handle difficult to move up and down and the multipoint lock hard to operate and lock. Coastal Group have developed their GLS200 lubricant spray to help resolve this. A regular application will soon have the handles and locks running smoothly. The specialist spray also prevents issues from recurring in the future. To make it easy for door manufacturers and installers to help their customers look after their new front doors, Coastal Group have put together a Hardware Care and Maintenance Pack. The pack is proving extremely popular as companies look to enhance their customer service, minimise callbacks and stand out from competitors. As Coastal Managing Director, Loren Jenner highlights, “The cost of the pack is minimal compared to a callback, plus it ensures a great lasting impression with the homeowner, giving you that extra point of difference.” Coastal’s Hardware Care & Maintenance Packs can be purchased online from coastal-group.com.

NEW HARDWARE SOLUTIONS CATALOGUE OUT NOW The latest catalogue from Coastal Group has been published, showcasing its biggest ever range of door and window hardware for joiners. “We’ve listened to customers and finetuned our products and services to meet their changing demands,” explains Coastal Group Managing Director, Loren Jenner. “It’s not just about the look and feel of products for customers; it’s about innovation and continuous improvement. People expect their hardware to last so durability and quality is also more important than ever.” As well as showcasing door and window furniture, the comprehensive catalogue features a new enhanced multipoint lock section to simplify ordering. Detailing the many Winkhaus multipoint door locking systems, the section covers all types of doors from lever operated single doors to stable doors, slam shut, key operated and double doors. “Advancement in the industry continues to keep us on our toes,” continues Loren Jenner. “We work closely with joiners and manufacturers to ensure we develop, supply and source everything they need to maximise efficiency and effectiveness when manufacturing external timber doors and windows.” One new range launched in the catalogue is the HS4 Portal V4 Comfort Unit lift and slide solution from Siegenia, which is customised for each customer to arrive ready for assembly, with everything trimmed, pre-drilled and preassembled. “The joinery industry is facing new challenges every year,” says Adrian Welch, Head of Sales for the Joinery division at Coastal Group. “Labour shortages are a growing problem, but this innovation from Siegenia is a real game changer. We can’t wait to introduce the new range to customers, helping them create lift and slide solutions that save time and money while delivering an outstanding end user experience.” The new 300-page catalogue from Coastal Group also introduces new finishes and styles of their own iconic 316 marine grade stainless steel range of door and window hardware, BLU, along with an enhanced tooling section. “The range is more impressive than ever,” continues Adrain. “With every joiner’s requirements bespoke, an off-the-shelf tooling system isn’t always the best solution so we’ve developed tooling that gives a superior finish when machining doors and windows for our hardware. Just give us a call to chat through your needs.” While listing products and their specifications in detail, the catalogue also provides technical support with insights, tips and guides to working out what components are required for different jobs. The company prides itself on the technical support provided by its trained team of advisors and this comes across in the publication. Hot off the press, the catalogues are being delivered to customers across the UK and beyond in the coming weeks. You can view the catalogue online via the Coastal Group website or request a copy by emailing marketing@coastal-group.com or calling 01726 871 025.

SECURITAS PROVING A REAL HIT Hardware specialist VBH has reported that its Securitas Security Window Espagnolette is proving very popular with window manufacturers. As part of the company’s greenteQ range of casement window locking systems, Securitas sits alongside the entry level greenteQ Window Espagnolette, popular PAS24 tested Invicta Window Shootbolt and the recently introduced iQ Security Espagnolette that works with Kubu to provide smart home connectivity. Securitas features pairs of mushroom headed cams that lock into both sides of a night vent striker plate, spreading the load if the window is attacked, rather than allowing all the force to be concentrated on one point. Each Securitas lock has a minimum of 4 mushroom cams (2 pairs) with the larger sizes boasting 4 pairs. Securitas is very quick to fit, as all fixings are applied in the same direction and there are no extensions to connect. VBH advise that Securitas fits most

popular profile systems currently in use, as it is available with industry standard 20 and 22mm backsets and a choice of two mushroom cam heights. As well as providing security, the mushrooms are adjustable to ease or tighten gasket compression. VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson tells us “Securitas has been a popular addition to our range and is ideal for fabricators who want a robust, secure, window lock but want the ease of fitting and reduced stockholding offered by an espagnolette type product. Securitas has been successfully tested on PVCu windows to PAS24, and is rated as a PREMIUM product in the Q-secure Approved Products List. Gary concludes, “Securitas is one of many locking options already within the greenteQ range, and we will be launching more soon. This will give window manufacturers even more choice when they buy from VBH. To find out more about Securitas and the rest of VBH’s range, visit www.vbhgb.com, email sales@vbhgb.com, or call 01634 263263.

WINKHAUS NANO PROTECT: ENHANCED SURFACE FINISH

New standard coating for door locking solutions and window systems The British weather is famed for its variability, so it’s important to choose door and window locking solutions that are up to the task. Winkhaus door locking solutions and window systems are renowned for their reliability and longevity, which will be further enhanced with the introduction of our innovative Nano Protect coating. Winkhaus subjects its steel to a complex finishing process in its own electroplating facilities to ensure that the technology can withstand a wide range of attacks. The result is excellent corrosion resistance and an appealing finish that lasts for many decades. Highest resistance class as standard Winkhaus door and window solutions with Nano Protect coating have been tested to the requirements of EN 1670 corrosion protection class 5, which requires emersion in a salt water mist for 480 hours. Once the testing requirement was reached, testing continued with our Nano Protect coating achieving a 66% overrun above the class 5 requirement. Scratch-resistant for everyday use A remarkable feature of the Nano Protect coating is its selfregeneration ability: In the case of light scratches through daily use, the silicon dioxide particles contained in the coating layers can “migrate” to the affected area and seal them permanently. This makes Winkhaus door and window solutions exceptionally durable, maintaining the protective barrier for far longer. In-house electroplating facility: Quality and on-schedule production in our own hands Winkhaus is one of the few manufacturers to perform electroplating in its own plants. Inhouse technology development and expertise has many advantages: a high level of quality, reduced dependence on suppliers, quick reaction capability, responsible handling of coating materials and sustainable, resource-saving processes. To achieve this, Winkhaus has invested in state of-the-art technologies at its German manufacturing sites in Telgte and Meiningen. In house laboratories, treatment plants, and combined heat and power plants promote environmentally friendly and resource-saving operations. The waste heat from production is used to heat the electroplating plants. Independence from third-party coaters also enables us to react more quickly to customer requests and determine surface quality entirely on our own. Precisely what you would expect as the standard coating on every Winkhaus door and window solution.

SHEERLINE LOOKS TO SHAKE UP CONSERVATORY ROOF MARKET WITH G23 AWARD NOMINEE, S2 Sheerline has been announced as a finalist in the Best Business Initiative of the Year category for S2, its new conservatory roof system, at this year’s G23 Awards. Since being unveiled at the FIT Show in May, it has become a popular option for installers looking to differentiate their roof offering. The new roof system was introduced in response to the stagnation that had beset the conservatory roof system market, leading to a lack of choice and a drying up of innovation. Launching S2, through partners Prefix and Supalite was a strategic decision for the company, which had already enjoyed success with its award-winning S1 roof

lantern. To ensure S2 is as practical as it is innovative, the development team at Sheerline worked closely with its launch partners to refine the product. Ensuring it offered the thermal performance, ease of installation and outstanding aesthetics the market was looking for. As well as providing solutions to installers frustrations, S2 also offers greater choice for consumers. The latter is important because it will remove dependence on suppliers who have a monopoly, good for the market as a whole.

Advantages of Sheerline’s S2 when compared to other conservatory systems is the fact homeowners will benefit from the company’s revolutionary approach to thermal performance. For instance, S2 features multi-chambered top caps and ridges that help retain heat. In addition, S2 can be perfectly matched with every product offered by Sheerline, from the S1 Roof Lantern to the Prestige Bi-Fold Doors, and the newly launched Classic Heritage Door. It will enable the company to offer a one-stop, fully matched whole-house solution. Sheerline has been named a finalist in not one but two award categories this year. As well as being shortlisted for the Best Business Initiative of the Year, Ben Hartshorn has been announced as a finalist in the coveted Rising Star category. Since joining the team in 2019 Ben has quickly progressed from assisting with designing and testing physical prototypes in the early product cycle stages to heading up major product development projects and has recently been promoted to head Sheerline’s team of Technical Support Engineers. His successes to date includes the development of a clip-in bead option for the popular ultra-

slim Classic Window. As well as the recently introduced Classic Heritage Door. Sheerline CEO Roger Hartshorn said: “We’re delighted to be finalists in two categories for the G23 Awards this year. It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase the breadth of work we’re undertaking. The S2 is already proving popular, which isn’t a surprise given the success of the S1 and the latest addition to our roof range, SheerVent.” “There is clearly demand for reliable, thermally efficient, customisable conservatory and lantern roof systems. It’s also great for the company to be recognised for our people. For us, it’s important team members gain a broad work experience so they can specialise while developing their knowledge and working their way up, which is precisely what Ben has done,” he added. Sheerline will be attending the G23 Awards on 24 November at the London Hilton on Park Lane. To find out more about the S2, visit the website here: https://www.sheerline.com/s2. Alternatively, call 01332 978000 to speak to the team directly, or email info@sheerline.com.

BUILDING OUR SKILLS GARNERS BACKING FROM INDUSTRY SUPPORTERS FOR ITS SERIES OF BESPOKE INDUSTRY CAREERS FAIRS Fenestration, Glass and Glazing – 50 Careers in one day Having announced its intention to launch a series of bespoke industry careers fairs in 2024, Building Our Skills - Making Fenestration, Glass and Glazing a Career of Choice has garnered backing from an impressive array of industry supporters. Launch partners for the initiative include many key industry names including Rehau, Schuco, GGF, Bohle, FIT Show, GQA Qualifications, Liniar, CNC Recycling, CORGI Fenestration and VEKA among many others. The aim of these fairs is to engage directly with the education sector and show school children aged 14 upwards the vast array of career opportunities that the sector can offer. In fact Building Our Skills is aiming to showcase 50 distinct careers at each of its fairs. Two pilot events are to be held in March 2024 as a part of National Careers Week in South Yorkshire at the Oakwell Stadium, home of Barnsley FC, and in Manchester at the Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City Football Club. Building Our Skills is working in conjunction with the local authorities in South Yorkshire and Greater

Manchester to bring these events to fruition. Advocates include Lyndsey Morgan and Helen Brown, Department for Works & Pensions ‘Support for Schools (S4S)’ Schools Advisers in South Yorkshire, who agree that the introduction of bespoke careers fairs co-ordinated by Building Our Skills is a great idea. They say: “Having met with Building Our Skills at the FIT Show earlier this year, they helped to open our eyes to the breadth of career opportunities offered by the Fenestration, Glass and Glazing industry. People tend to associate the industry only with manufacturing and installation, but really there are so many more career pathways in the industry, from marketing, IT and customer services through to finance, sales, social media and much more. Building Our Skills’ idea to introduce a series of bespoke careers fairs is a great idea so that youngsters can find out more about what the industry is all about and hopefully be inspired to join it. In our roles we’re aiming to assist young people in choosing the

right career path for them, and in so doing bring them into closer contact with real-life companies and industries so that they can make informed choices. This means that our aims are aligned with those of Building Our Skills, and we are delighted to be involved with these events.” Mark Handley, Building Our Skills’ Partnerships Manager adds: “Our aim is to show the industry to over 1,000 school children and their teachers over the course of the two events. If the

two pilots are successful, these will become annual events enabling us to keep in touch with those who attend as they get closer to thinking about their careers. It is also our intention to expand the number of events into other areas of the country where we are working with other local education authorities”.
