In our penultimate edition of Fenestration Digital for 2023, we are putting a spotlight on some of the winners of the 2023 National Fenestration Awards.

The industry gathered at Doncaster Racecourse on October 28th for a day and night of celebration, with fantastic horse racing, food, networking and entertainment, as well as the all-important awards presentation. It was another successful day and was the highest attended event so far, marking the NFAs tenth anniversary campaign well.

2023 has been a tough year for much of the sector, with a variety of problems all compounding at the same time.

That being said, there are plenty of success stories out there and the National Fenestration Awards provides a very positive end to the year.

Well done to all the winners in NFA23 and to all those who made it as a finalist in this year’s campaign!

NFA RECOGNITION COMPLETES GREAT YEAR FOR BUILDING OUR SKILLS Partnerships Manager for Building Our Skills Mark Handley was runner up in the Social Networker of the year category at the recent NFA Awards, but Building Our Skills won the Training Company of the year award.

“It was a great end to what has been a really good year for Building Our Skills” said Mark, “and shows that what we are doing, both in terms of training, and gathering support from the industry for our campaigns, is going really well”.

“The number of people coming through our training centres is growing all the time and shows that there is both an appetite for formal accredited practical training from people who want to raise their skill levels to be the best they can be, and that the offer of skills training acts as a genuine support tool to encourage newcomers to join the

industry for the first time”.

“Our campaigns continue on as we try to attract newcomers to the industry to help bridge immediate skills gaps, and to show the industry as a career of choice for those a little further back in the process who we want to attract as a workforce of tomorrow”.

Having announced its intention to launch a series of bespoke industry careers fairs in 2024, Building Our Skills - Making Fenestration, Glass and Glazing a Career of Choice has garnered backing from an impressive array of industry supporters.

Launch partners for the initiative include many key industry names including Rehau, Schueco, GGF, Bohle, FIT Show, GQA Qualifications, Liniar, CNC Recycling, Kubu, CORGI Fenestration Glazing Insider

and VEKA among many others. The aim of these fairs is to engage directly with the education sector and show school children aged from years 9, 10 and 11 the vast array of career opportunities that the sector can offer. In fact Building Our Skills is aiming to showcase 50 distinct careers at each of its fairs.

Two pilot events are to be held in March 2024 as a part of National Careers Week in South Yorkshire at the Oakwell Stadium, home of Barnsley FC, and in Manchester at the Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City Football Club. Building Our Skills is working in conjunction with the local authorities in South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester to bring these events to fruition.

Mark Handley adds: “Our aim is to show the industry to over 1,000 school children and their teachers over the course of the two events. If the two pilots are successful, these will become annual events enabling us to keep in touch with those who attend as they get closer to thinking about their careers. It is also our intention to expand the number of events

into other areas of the country where we are working with other local education authorities”.

REHAU SCORES HAT TRICK AT NATIONAL FENESTRATION AWARDS 2023 On Saturday 28 October, REHAU was crowned Systems Company of the Year at the National Fenestration Awards, as well as scooping Best Use of Video for partnership film with Uxbridge-based fabricator, Visio, while Area Sales Manager, Hannah Smith also walked away with Young Person of the Year.

DOUBLE AWARD WIN FOR UAP

The success of UAP - and its CEO - have been applauded with two top awards.

Beating stiff competition, including leading global brands, UAP was crowned Hardware Company of the Year at the National Fenestration Awards 2023. The business was set up in 1996 by CEO David Jennings who was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to the fenestration industry.

Launched in 2013, the National Fenestration Awards aims to be the fairest, most inclusive fenestration event, rewarding the very best in the sector. Following nominations from people working across the industry, the winners received their awards at a ceremony held at Doncaster Racecourse on 28 October 2023.

Armed with just a computer, David launched UAP from his spare room. His idea was simply to manufacture installation-ready door knockers that were pre-drilled and finished. At the time, there was nothing comparable in the UK, marking the start of a journey which has seen UAP rapidly grow.

From humble beginnings, David has been instrumental in expanding UAP’s customer base and product portfolio both organically and through strategic acquisitions. Today, UAP stands as a £22 million business, boasting seven leading brands: UAP Locking Systems, UAP Fullex, UAP Intelligent Hardware, UAP Firemongery, UAP Trade Locks, UAP Security Hardware, and online specialist X-Fort.

Throughout his career, David has prioritised high-quality, market-driven products and championed innovation. As well as nurturing loyal partnerships with manufacturers across Asia,

this strategy has seen investments in-house product development, including the recent launch of IONIC, an ultra-secure electronic lock.

David has also embraced new technology, investing in 3D printing to reduce waste during product development, demonstrating his vision for a more sustainable future.

As the UAP family has grown, so has David’s commitment to people. He has cultivated a culture of inclusivity through initiatives such as the UAP Training Academy and by developing talent and promoting internally. In 2019, he introduced a profit-sharing model, underlining his passion for treating people fairly and recognising their vital contributions to UAP’s success.

Beyond the boardroom, David has been a driving force behind the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities, from fundraising to build schools and a hospital in Nepal, to planting 50,000 trees, and donating PPE to local charities and community groups during the pandemic.

A leader beyond his business, David also serves as the Vice President of The Encephalitis Society and is the co-owner of the Manchester Thunder Netball team.

Speaking at the NFA Awards, Sarah Rogers, head of the NFA said: “This award celebrates the lifetime achievements of a man who has not only built a remarkable business empire, but left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals.

New legislation and evolving customer needs are delivering constant change and creating vast opportunities for innovation. A SUCCESSFUL DAY AT THE RACES FOR VBH Hardware manufacturer, VBH, had a successful day at Doncaster races on Saturday 28th October for the National Fenestration Awards presentation event.

Members of the VBH team from various departments enjoyed champagne upon arrival, followed by a sumptuous three-course lunch and a full race card. Those who had a flutter report mixed success.

When the awards winners were announced though, VBH had a better time of it, being successful in three categories.

Maggie’s, set up by Maggie Keswick Jencks in 1996 following her own experience of having cancer, provides professional advice for cancer patients and their families on finances, wellbeing and understanding diagnosis. Through the support given, 96% of people feel less alone after visiting one of the advice centres and 98% are more comfortable talking to their medical teams afterwards. There is now a network of centres across the UK. Individuals at Eurocell have undertaken a range of fundraising activities including cycling 250km as part of Maggie’s virtual Gran Fondo, 10km runs, a 5km walk, car boot sale and walking a mile every day throughout August.

EUROCELL FIRST TO SUPPLY TRIPLE-GLAZING WINDOWS TO TAYLOR WIMPEY Eurocell fabricator, Rapid PVCu has secured the first triple glazed site for Taylor Wimpey in Sunderland.

National housebuilder Taylor Wimpey will use Eurocell’s Modus windows system at its Herrington View residential scheme in Penshaw, Sunderland.

Doncaster-based Rapid PVCu is a new-build specialist and has worked with Eurocell, the UK’s leading manufacturer, distributor, and recycler of PVC-U building products for 14 years.

Eurocell’s market-leading Future Homes Ready Modus window system is made from 50% average post-consumer recycled PVC-U and is manufactured using innovative dual material extrusion technology (DMET).

The ultimate sustainable option, with a significantly lower carbon footprint than profiles made or

recycled outside the UK. For the new homeowners that will move into the neighbourhood, with U-values as low as 0.86, the triple glazed windows will reduce carbon emissions, use less energy to heat and present higher levels of security.

EDGETECH ROUNDTABLE FINDS SECTOR READY FOR TRIPLE GLAZED FUTURE

The UK glass sector is ready for a large-scale shift to triple glazing, and thinks it’s the right move for fenestration, wider construction, and society as a whole.

That was the key message to emerge from Edgetech’s Triple Glazing Question roundtable debate, which took place in Birmingham on the 28th of September.

With the Future Home Standard just 18 months away, the sector faces big challenges as it seeks to meet ever-tightening performance requirements.

In Birmingham, senior figures from leading trade bodies, glass suppliers and IGU manufacturers discussed the industry’s ability to adapt.

Through a mixture of open, free-flowing discussion and anonymous polling, the event gauged attendees’ opinions on a range of important topics.

They were asked whether they favoured a mandatory shift to triple glazing for new-build, and about the industry’s ability to cope if that were to come into force.

The discussion also covered current demand for triple glazing, and whether making it the norm for new-build would generate greater consumer interest.

Much uncertainty remains around the Future Homes Standard – but the mood in the room was extremely optimistic, as Edgetech Managing Director Chris Alderson explains.

“We had a great day of discussion and debate in Birmingham, and the results were hugely encouraging.

“We all know that the Future Homes Standard will have a major impact on the sector, but the exact nature of that impact is still unclear.

“At the moment, we don’t know if it will make triple glazing mandatory for all new-build properties.

ANOTHER LOCKING SYSTEM FROM GREENTEQ! Hardware manufacturer, VBH, has announced a further addition to its greenteQ range of window locking systems.

The Securitas Offset Twin Cam Security Espagnolette has been designed for use on slim aluminium casement window systems.

WEATHER-BEATING TILT & TURN HARDWARE FROM VBH Hardware specialist, VBH, has reported a surge in the popularity of the ArTech tilt & turn system from respected Italian hardware manufacturer, AGB.

fabricators are switching to ArTech. Security spec windows have been tested to forces of 5.5KN, nearly double the forces specified in PAS24.

VBH advise that ArTech is treated with Activeage ‘Hi-Protection’ coating that enables the hardware to withstand over 2000 hours of testing in a neutral salt spray environment.

Gary Gleeson, marketing manager at VBH, says “ArTech is incredibly resistant to attack, achieving almost double the required performance under PAS24.

Activeage is a 3-stage finish, incorporating layers of zinc, chromic passivation with silica Nano particles, and finally an organic mineral protection coating.

ArTech is available in surface fit, jigless, rebated, and concealed hinge variants, all with standard level and PAS24 security level options. Upgrading between the two is reportedly easy, with only minimal hardware changes.
