Welcome to the first edition of the Fenestration Digital magazine for 2024. We hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and New Year break and ready to make the most of the upcoming year.

Perhaps the theme for 2024 will be challenging or maybe uncertainty. There are a lot of question marks around major issues that are going to impact our sector this year. For example, the conclusion of the 2024 Future Homes Standard, which saw the industry deflated at the end of 2023 after the latest update from the Government. We have an election in the UK being held towards the back end of the year – which always brings uncertainty and subdued spending from the public.

The inflation and cost-of-living stories have not gone away for this year, and now we have conflict in the Red Sea which is threatening to send shipping prices rocketing once again.

But away from all of that, there remains plenty of good opportunities to exploit and make sure 2024 is a year of growth.

The aluminium market remains strong, with outdoor living products set to do well, and entrance doors always being a fantastic driver of sales for installers. There are always opportunities out there, we may just have to work that little bit harder to make sure we find them!

2024 NATIONAL FENESTRATION AWARDS SET TO LAUNCH With the new year firmly under way, the 2024 National Fenestration Awards is gearing up for another successful year celebrating the best and brightest in the fenestration sector.

2023 marked ten years since the creation of the NFAs, which were established to find a better and fairer way to find and reward the very best people and companies in the sector. It has since grown to become the largest and most prestigious awards in the sector, with tens of thousands of people taking part each year in the nomination and voting process.

COASTAL GROUP CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE

Coastal Group is celebrating 20 successful years of manufacturing and supplying door and window hardware throughout the UK and beyond.

Company founder Anthony Jenner marks the milestone and looks back at how it all started.

“I left school with no qualifications, starting my working life as a carpenter and joiner,” explains Anthony. “I used to jump on the tube every day to the Ritz and Carnarvon Hotels in London, doing joinery and general maintenance. I loved the work and soon trained in plumbing and heating engineering which meant I could offer a more comprehensive service.”

Anthony then moved into sales, working with Pret A Manger to develop their packaging before selling laundry products to high end retailers such as Harrods, Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason and John Lewis. Other roles included manufacturing, fitting out offices and project management before moving to Cornwall around the turn of the millennium.

“These varied experiences and different job roles developed my understanding of what business is about,” explained Anthony. “As I neared 40 I wanted to start my own business that could provide for my

family’s future and be an asset to the local community.”

Coastal Group was born on the shores of Cornwall in 2003, selling a small range of door handles. Coastal has since grown to employ over 50 members of staff, manufacturing and supplying joiners, door and window manufacturers, specifiers and end users with high quality hardware that lasts.

“All four of my sons have come on board and work very hard to grow the business further,” Anthony continued. “I’m proud to hand the company over to them. I remain by their side and keep in close contact with the business but am confident that they have it in control, with help from a great team.”

Coastal Group now provides a full service to the trade, supplying a wide range of high quality door and window furniture, locks, hinges and more.

The company has been through a lot since its inception, with recessions, global conflict, supply chain issues and changes in technology. “One of the biggest challenges has been getting good staff who want to come on the journey with you but I feel we have the best and most dedicated team who are key to our continued success.”

Coastal Group is particularly proud of the technical support and specialist advice offered to the trade. “We’re lucky to employ people who have worked as joiners, some of whom are former customers of Coastal,” explained Anthony. “That’s one of our key strengths that our current customers really appreciate. Being able to speak their language and truly understand their challenges is essential.”

Coastal Group continues to support the industry by creating how-to guides and videos to answer the most frequently asked questions and challenges.

Anthony’s oldest son, Loren Jenner, now manages operations at the business, supported by his three brothers and a growing team. “I’m proud to have the opportunity to carry on what Dad started,” said Managing Director Loren Jenner.

“We’re lucky to have amazing staff who are passionate about what we do who help move us forward every day.”

As part of the 20-year anniversary, Coastal Group hosted a celebration team day at the iconic Eden Project in Cornwall.

“The event was a chance to thank staff for their hard work, share our vision for the future and celebrate individual and company achievements,” continued Loren.

Guest speaker Sir Tim Smit closed the event with an inspiring talk about building something great.

Coastal Group is already embarking on the next stage of its journey, with new products, services and training in the pipeline. “We’d like to thank all our customers and suppliers who have supported us on this journey so far,” concluded Loren. “We look forward to sharing the next twenty years and beyond.”

STUDENT REGISTRATIONS EXCEED 500 FOR BUILDING OUR SKILLS’ BESPOKE INDUSTRY CAREERS FAIRS IN MARCH Fenestration, Glass and Glazing – 50 Careers in one day Building Our Skills - Making Fenestration, Glass and Glazing a Career of Choice says student registrations for the first of its series of bespoke industry careers fairs in March has now exceeded 500.

“This is brilliant news,” says Mark Handley, Building Our Skills’ Partnerships Manager.

He adds: “Clearly, this new initiative is striking a chord with educators, parents, the industry and students themselves who are seeing the value in it. Our aim is to show the industry to over 1,000 school children and their teachers over the course of two pilot events in March. If the two pilots are successful, these will become annual events enabling us to keep in touch with those who attend as they get closer to thinking about their careers. It is also our intention to expand the number of events into other areas of the country where we are already working with other local education authorities.”

As part of the new initiative, Building Our Skills has launched ‘Career Families’ to help students understand the many career

options open to them as they get closer to the world of work.

The eleven ‘families’ together encompass over 100 individual roles, demonstrating career progression opportunities, training, qualifications and how students can start out on their career journeys in the industry.

The Career Families will be showcased in person at the pilot events to be held in March 2024 as a part of National Careers Week. Building Our Skills is working in conjunction with the education bodies in South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester to bring these events to fruition.

SHEERLINE LAUNCHES REVERSE BUTT JOINT FOR THE ALUMINIUM MARKET Known for developing innovative solutions to historic challenges within the aluminium industry, Sheerline has announced the launch of its latest revolutionary product, a Reverse Butt Joint for the Prestige window system.

Based on Sheerline’s tried and tested corner cleat, a new patented, precisionmachined, aluminium T cleat will enable Sheerline customers to offer fully internally beaded aluminium windows, that feature both opening vents and fixed panes. It will streamline the fabrication and installation process, enabling fabricators to manufacture the reverse butt joint using Sheerline’s newly introduced Prestige Z transom.

This solution eliminates the need for external glazing, reverse adaptors, and dummy sashes, therefore saving time and money. The reduction in materials, manufacturing, and labour costs also adds to the appeal of the product and opens a realm of opportunity in the specification sector.

Large-scale commercial projects and tenders, where efficiency is key, will benefit from the streamlined approach offered by the Z transom. For instance, it’s the ideal option for projects that require fully internally glazed windows and reduces the need for scaffolding as glazing and remedial work can be carried out from within a building.

In addition, the reverse butt joint uses less material when compared to windows that use a dummy sash, which reduces waste and saves time. Saving 20% on material and labour costs when compared to a window featuring a dummy sash rather than a fixed light.

UPBEAT, GLOOMY OR REAL WORLD LEADERSHIP The forecasters have been looking at what’s in store for 2024. Boom?

Bust? More of the same? I’ve read predictions that suggest all three are possible, but every prediction should be read with some caution and an understanding of the writer’s agenda.

If you’re reading about stagnation or recession, supply shortages and employment problems, remember that bad news always grabs more attention.

Awareness is important, but it’s not wise to focus exclusively on the doom and gloom. Negativity saps energy and enthusiasm. Those who can only see what’s wrong with the world would claim that they are only telling it ‘like it is’. They’re wrong. They’re only talking about half of the picture, picking up on all the worries and magnifying them.

They can promote despair, apathy and even paralysis.

The opposite approach isn’t much help either. By all means, have a positive outlook, but those who are upbeat without good reason always strike a false note. Anyone who’s sat in front of a ‘motivational’ speaker and emerged feeling capable of anything and everything, knows from experience that a lot of hot air is no defence against the harsh realities of the real world. In life – and in business – it’s no good imagining that everything will be perfect. It won’t. Soon enough, reality will bite.

There have always been highs and lows, good times and bad, and there always will be. But, importantly, discovering that you can continue to make progress in the face of both is liberating. You don’t need to be floored when something goes wrong.

You can opt for a sensible course of action when the boom arrives. A realistic approach works every year.

It helps you plan for the challenges and capitalise on the opportunities. In 2024, we’ll have both.

Let’s look at the situation close to home. The UK is still dealing with inflation and the interest rates that are used to control it, but most forecasters are predicting modest growth, and as inflation eases, interest rates are expected to reduce.

This, along with the permanent full expensing of investments in new plant and machinery, as announced by the Chancellor in the Autumn statement, should provide favourable conditions for business investment.

Investment, by its very nature, signifies faith in the future – a belief that over time, the benefits will be realised. It’s not a knee-jerk reaction to a current circumstance but rather something that’s part of an overall business strategy.

Investment can however promote unease within the workplace, especially where employees may feel

their employment security is threatened.

It’s important to be clear why a change is being made and what the impact may be and to communicate this openly and honestly. In a period where finding and retaining talent remains an issue, the best business leaders can build trust as they implement their strategic plans.

Engage with the team. Get their buyin to any plans and make use of their insights and expertise. If rising costs of wages and raw materials mean that you need to seek efficiencies, be clear about it. If people are concerned about how technology will impact them, discuss this frankly. Look for upskilling opportunities and work out a solution that satisfies everyone involved. It is possible.

I expect that some forecasters’ predictions for 2024 will prove to be wide of the mark. That’s not a criticism.

After all, we often have little control over the challenges we face, especially those arising from global events. But I believe it’s how we respond to challenges that makes the difference. The year may be a roaring success for some and a damp squib for others. Predictions don’t determine the result – the quality of leadership in a business does.

UAP APPOINTS NEW CFO

UAP, the specialist in locks and hardware for doors and windows, has appointed a new chief financial officer (CFO).

Adam Lumley brings more than 18 years of commercial finance experience to UAP. Throughout his career, he has held director-level roles at private-equity backed organisations, large multinational firms, and at a global consultancy.

As UAP’s new CFO, Adam will be using his financial skills to drive profitable growth and cultural change.

Speaking about his responsibilities, Adam said: “UAP has expanded rapidly in recent years and has ambitious plans to keep scaling up. My job is to make sure it remains a very efficient, profitable business and that our culture aligns with this aim.

“With seven different brands forming part of the UAP group, I’ll be working closely with senior managers to ensure there are consistent goals and ways of working, putting us on the strongest possible growth path.”
