Unveiling the Success of the 2023 Fence Show & Security Expo

The 2023 Fence Show & Security Expo, held August 23 – 25, stands as a significant milestone, uniting the efforts of the FWA and Fence Show teams.

“Together, a gap was identified within the industry – a feeling of exclusion experienced by businesses of all sizes,” explains Melissa Hernandez, marketing director with the Fence Show & Security Expo.

The event brought diverse companies under one roof: from innovative tools to cutting-edge access systems and a wide range of fencing solutions. It was a comprehensive global showcase to facilitate easy access to the latest industry offerings. “Our intention extended beyond just display,” she says. “We were eager to foster education in the form of workshops, interactive classes, talks from industry experts, and ample networking opportunities were essential for the event. We ensured inclusivity, catering to the needs of both industry veterans and newcomers.”

Some standout events were the Gate Safety Summit, a dynamic workshop that accentuated the importance of gate safety, and the popular Fence Games. Industry experts Shelby Kelland and Shane Jones took the lead, delivering hands-on exercises emphasizing safety best practices and the latest protocols. Fence Games, hosted by Mr. Fence Academy, added an element of excitement as attendees and exhibitors enthusiastically embraced friendly competition.

The expo displayed a sincere commitment to empowering women within the industry, with the Women of FWA taking center stage. A dedicated Women of FWA booth, graciously sponsored by Eagle Fence, provided an exclusive space for accomplished women professionals in the industry to come together, share experiences, and inspire one another.

During the 2023 Fence Show & Security Expo, many exhibitors added excitement to the event by hosting captivating raffles and contests. Lowe’s offered attendees the chance to win valuable tools through an enticing raffle, while SWI Fence added to the fun by raffling off coolers. Lion Fence & Steel Supplies turned it up a notch by presenting attendees with an opportunity to win tickets to a thrilling getaway in Cabo through their raffle. Adding to the festivities was the engaging fence sign competition orchestrated by JC Gury Co. This contest invited participants to showcase their captivating fence signs, contributing to the lively atmosphere of the expo. Meanwhile, attendees like Dan Blanc, the winner of the “Best Fence Sign” contest, displayed his sign that caught the attention of everyone present. These are just a few examples among many exhibitors who generously

offered giveaways and contests, adding to the dynamic atmosphere of the event.

“These interactive features elevated the event’s excitement and underscored the exhibitors’ dedication to delivering engaging and memorable experiences,” Hernandez explains. “They contributed to the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere that defined The Fence Show & Security Expo, making it an unforgettable experience for exhibitors and attendees.”

“The success of the inaugural Fence Show & Security Expo owes much of the contributions of key individuals: Susan K. Sorley, Michael Brooks, and Leticia Aguirre Cardenas. Their assistance was crucial, and we couldn’t have done it without them,” she says. “Our sincere gratitude goes to our sponsors, Southwest Automated Security and Mid-America Fence Supply, whose unwavering support transformed our vision into reality.”

“Overall, Brian Frederiksen’s vision came to life through the dedication of the Fence Show and FWA teams, who orchestrated a memorable event that left a lasting impact on the fence and security community,” Hernandez says. “The show’s success has brought us immense joy, and we’re profoundly grateful for the support we’ve received from the exhibitors and attendees. We’re eager to improve the 2024 Fence Show & Security Expo, building on our successes and aiming to surpass ourselves. We’re excited about what lies ahead and hope to see you at the 2024 Fence Show & Security Expo!”

rnamental Fencing

Strong and decorative, ornamental fencing allows the consumer to add personality with rails, scrolls, and finials while never compromising on durability and security. When defining a space needs a unique finish and design, ornamental fencing is often the perfect choice.

Swedgelock –as Strong as it is Beautiful

SwedgeLock is known for their no-screw aluminum railing product, eliminating the welding and screwing together of panels. After building a 30-year history of proven success, SwedgeLock launched their 2000 Series of residential aluminum fencing products two years ago,, which has experienced significant growth in the Southeast, according to Cameron Parker, Plant Manager with SwedgeLock. “This new line has been supplied to both large and small installation companies, offering cost-effectiveness, quality, and aesthetics that combine to create a fence system worthy of even the highest caliber jobs.”

SwedgeLock Aluminum Fence and Railing is the pioneer of the no screw aluminum system, which was introduced to the market in the early 90s. Originally, the company focused on supplying commercial balcony railing for the high-rise market in South Florida. However, by 2002, SwedgeLock had expanded to become a global supplier, offering a full range of fence and rail products through a network of over 600 dealers worldwide. Over the past decade, the company has primarily concentrated on meeting the multi-family business requirements and offers a wide variety of balcony railings, comprising over a dozen different styles.

Vern Haglund, the original inventor of the SwedgeLock system, was already a renowned figure in the curtain wall industry. However, he identified the strong demand for a non-welded aluminum railing product. Unfortunately,

20 OCTOBER 2023 | FENCE NEWS USA
SPECIAL SECTION

Vern passed away in a private plane crash in 2002, and Swedgelock was subsequently sold to APG Meridian. The economic downturn of 2008 forced APG to shut down its operation in Hamlet, North Carolina, in 2009. Ron Allen, the current owner, had been a SwedgeLock dealer since 1995 and was already familiar with the product when he bought the assets in 2010. Ron’s extensive installation background of both fence and railing products has resulted in a complete redesign of the entire product line, focusing on ease of installation and overall quality.

SwedgeLock is currently located in a 60,000 square foot building in Greenville, South Carolina. “For the past three decades, we have been dedicated to continually improving not only the fence and railing systems we offer, but also the technology and efficiency of our production,” says Parker. “With the addition of two automated panel assembly machines and two more in production, we are well-positioned to take on more customers without sacrificing lead times or quality.”

Parker says SwedgeLock has developed a new line of personalized fencing products. These include wood grain-coated aluminum items in horizontal and vertical privacy, semi-privacy, and railing products to match. “With our exclusive regional opportunities, a fence company can offer products their local rivals cannot match,” says Parker. “We are committed to building these relationships with our customers to help them be successful.”

3 Reasons Why Decorative Metal Fence Panels Are Trending

What if a fence could be more? SelectSpace Partitions was founded with the belief that a fence could be more than just a fence. The company gives business owners creative options for crowd control and space definition.

Decorative metal fence panels used to be an afterthought for outdoor hospitality areas, according to Jim Erhart, marketing manager with SelectSpace® Partitions. When additional privacy was desired, a readily available fence was installed. Over time, business owners started looking for ways to not only define their outdoor space, but enhance it, turning to different materials to create a unique look for their outdoor dining or patio area. As a result, Erhart says perforated metal has emerged as a very popular trend.

“Our decorative metal fence panels give business owners more options for creative customization in their outdoor areas, whether it’s to partition a sidewalk for overflow dining space, create privacy for outside seating or add a crowd control barrier that looks like it’s part of the décor,” he says. “These panels offer both functionality and aesthetic value, plus they fit any space, even smaller outdoor areas. They have quickly become a preferred choice for architects and business owners for outdoor partitions.”

Erhart highlights some of the key advantages metal partitions from SelectSpace offer:

VERSATILITY

Some fence options are significantly limited in terms of the look and feel of the panels, as well as the size. They may offer privacy, but many look very similar from one installation to another. Decorative metal fence partition patterns are perforated and crafted to meet specific needs. For example, designs can include circles, squares, and hexagons, and there is an option to laser-cut your logo into a panel. Components can be mixed and matched to create a custom system to fit any space.

COLOR CHOICES

Decorative metal fence panels allow you to pick from many paint color options. You can match the branding of your business, including a unique corporate color palette, or add a pop of color for contrast. Options include powder coating or Kynar. Color matching is available, allowing for a completely unique design that supports the business brand and aesthetic.

MATERIAL SUSTAINABILITY

Decorative metal panels and posts come from various metal types, including aluminum and galvanized steel, both of which are infinitely recyclable. Metal panels bought in the U.S. are manufactured to demanding standards, including environmental impacts. The panels are made from heavy-gauge material and coated with long-lasting finishes to ensure longevity, even in harsh elements.

Erhart adds that the panels are designed to be easily assembled. “SelectSpace Partitions are effortless to move and store. No special tools are required to add or remove panels. We make it easy to organize any space and help you create a design that’s perfect for your business.”

How to Ensure a Quality Powder Coat on Aluminum Fencing

When choosing to work with or stock aluminum fencing, it’s critical to know the quality of a manufacturer’s powder coat and understand the powder coating process they employ so your customer will be satisfied for years to come with the product you installed.

Like paint or other sealants, powder coating provides a durable and protective finish that helps prevent corrosion, rust and fading due to weather and other environmental conditions. A quality powder coat also enhances the longevity and appearance of aluminum fencing products. Powder coating is a dry finishing process used to coat a metal substrate; it is applied to the metal in a powder coating chamber using a process called electrostatic spray deposition (ESD). The application uses multiple spray guns to apply an electrostatic charge to the powder particles which

coating can impact the final aluminum fence product. Avoiding an uneven coat that may occur when facilities are used for a wide range of generic products for various industries is recommended.

“Quality is always at the forefront of what we do at Barrette Outdoor Living,” says Clark. “From the innovative powder coating equipment designed just for our products, to the variety of testing performed at our on-site laboratory, to our proprietary powder formulation.”

Raw aluminum, used prior to the powder coating process, should be stored indoors in a dry environment. If raw aluminum is exposed to moisture, it can oxidize which prevents the powder from properly adhering and could cause the coating to peel.

Powder can be purchased generically off the shelf or custom formulated, which allows the

optimum since it best maintains the purity of the parts being coated. Automation ensures parts do not encounter human hands which means less likelihood of imperfections due to manual handling.

Pre-treatment processes are critical for a quality outcome. Manufacturers should have a multi-step cleaning and rinse process in place to pretreat the raw aluminum parts before they enter the powder coating chamber. This ensures the powder will properly adhere to the aluminum. The process should include an alkaline cleaner that removes impurities; several cleanings with a reverse osmosis rinse using ultra-filtered water; and a pretreatment with a special conversion coating.

The American Architectural Manufacturing Association (AAMA) has three levels of specification for powder coatings – 2603, 2604, and 2605.

AAMA 2603 is typically used for interior specifications where color retention is not required. AAMA 2605 is reserved for high performance exterior specification for architectural projects. “Most aluminum fencing manufacturers only achieve AAMA 2603 specification,” says Duffy.

Manufacturers that meet or exceed AAMA 2604 specification are the ideal choice for exterior applications like aluminum fencing. AAMA 2605 specifies that the coating is designed for architectural exteriors that require superior corrosion resistance with limited fade and weathering. AAMA 2604 coatings are formulated with super durable polyester resins which provide good color and gloss retention.

“Our aluminum fencing features a powder coating that meets and exceeds AAMA 2604 specifications,” says Duffy. “Our coating process yields performance testing that is more than three times the industry requirement.”

are then attracted to the grounded metal part.

After the powder is applied, the parts enter a curing oven where the heat creates a chemical reaction that permanently adheres the coating to the part, resulting in a finish that is like liquid paint, but much more durable.

“We have powder coating equipment on site at multiple facilities, specifically designed to coat aluminum fencing,” explains Zack Clark, vice president of Pro Fence at Barrette Outdoor Living. “Having in-house powder coating capability means we have highly qualified staff in place who constantly monitor the equipment and materials.” Maintaining a consistent, premium powder

“We use a proprietary powder formulation that is designed to meet high-level specifications and the target range for powder thickness on all of our aluminum parts is three to four mils; one of the highest in the industry,” explains Jason Duffy, senior product manager at Barrette Outdoor Living.

Manufacturers that have in-house testing laboratories, conduct system checks and utilize third-party testing can best ensure a consistent and quality powder coat. Testing verifies a coating’s consistency, adhesion and ensures the finish is completely cured onto the product.

For coastal areas that have a high exposure to salt water and high humidity, salt spray testing is essential, and 3,000 hours of testing is considered the industry standard. “We are proud to say our aluminum fencing products undergo 10,000 hours of salt spray testing,” says Duffy. “In addition to state-of-the-art indoor laboratories, we also

Top Metal Fence Design Trends for 2023

Whether you’re looking to add a bit of extra security to your property or just want to spruce up your landscaping, a metal fence is a great option. However, with so many different designs and styles available, it can be hard to know where to start.

From classic wrought iron fences to modern geometric designs, today’s metal fence trends offer something to suit any preference or property style.

Founded 35 years ago by three brothers, Cacciola Iron Works in Patterson, New Jersey, is a family owned and operated business providing ornamental iron work. Today, the family tradition continues, with the next generation of owners offering state-of-the-art techniques and unique designs for builders, architects and private residences.

The professionals at Cacciola Iron Works provide offer an overview of the most popular metal fence design elements:

GEOMETRIC SHAPES.

Geometric shapes are becoming increasingly popular in home decor, furniture, apparel, and even metal fences. Many people are drawn to geometric shapes for their aesthetic appeal; the angular lines create an eye-catching look that brings personality to any piece without being overly busy. What’s more, geometric designs offer a sense of order and harmony within a composition that can be satisfying and peaceful to look at. Metal fences with geometric shapes serve a dual purpose – they are both stylish and offer safety from external influences. Geometric shapes are also popular for their no-nonsense and edgy look, giving spaces an opportunity for bold statements that draw attention and intrigue. These elements can brighten up your yard and guide attention to a certain area of a garden or outdoor space, creating balance and harmony in the overall layout of the property.

BLACK METAL FENCING.

Another trend that has gained strength this year is the black metal fence. The timeless look of wrought iron can combine with the smart look of the black color to create the ultimate elegance in any property exterior. Black metal fencing can be used to enhance both commercial and residential properties and will meet all expectations of strength and durability. Easy to install and maintain, this fencing can suit any aesthetic needs a property owner may have while also providing the necessary safety and privacy.

In addition, straight black metal designs make black wrought iron fences pleasing to the eye, while still fulfilling their purpose as an effective barrier. This fence has a unique ability to blend with any type of architecture, making it even more appealing. The dark color is a great choice for home exteriors as it can accentuate the natural landscaping. Most black fences are treated with powder-coated finishes to prevent oxidation or rust, making them long-lasting and virtually maintenance-free. The black wrought iron fence is a smart choice for anyone looking to upgrade the beauty of their home with an elegant look with little to no maintenance.

CUSTOMIZED METAL FENCES.

There is a growing shift of focus to customizable designs specifically crafted to suit homeowners’ tastes and property needs. Wrought-iron customizable fence designs not only last for years and require minimal upkeep but can also be made to fit exact specifications. From subtle details to large decorative elements, a unique look and feel can be created to reflect a personal style or corporate brand. For example, many customized wrought iron fences come with intricately detailed designs and panels featuring artistic patterns or flourishes. Powder coating can be added to customize the color.

More and more property owners are finding the excitement of having a fence created that is completely unique to their space. As an added element of customization, wrought iron gates can be crafted to meet specific design needs, including automation and security features, as well as design elements.

Enclosing a Large Property with Steel Fencing

Any fencing project comes with its own unique challenges, from choosing the right material to following grade changes on uneven terrain. These types of challenges compound as a property’s acreage increases. For instance, a customer in a rural area may want to define their property line without obscuring their line of sight.

“Not only do customers with larger properties have different reasons for installing a fence, but they also have different expectations for those fences, including keeping required maintenance at a minimum,” explains Jarrett Adams, director, fencing category with Fortress Building Products. “Whereas maintenance on a standard yard fence may not be unreasonable, it can turn into a herculean task when the fence stretches on for acres.”

While there is no single way to determine the best fencing for a large property, Adams says there are several factors to consider that can help streamline that decision:

The best fencing for a rural property maintains line of sight, establishes strong perimeter. One reason people move to rural areas is to connect with the outdoors. Installing a privacy fence on these types of properties may be less than desirable since they block views into and out of the property. Some of the best fences for rural properties are made of steel because their sleek, clean lines almost fade completely into the scenery.” At the same time, he says these fences set up a strong perimeter, keeping pets and children from wandering off alone and alerting hunters to property lines. Unlike traditional barbed wire fences, steel fences won’t cut or otherwise hurt pets or young children, making them safer overall.

The best fencing for a large property is inherently low maintenance. When it comes to owning long stretches of fencing, it is important for customers to consider the labor required to keep them good looking, safe and structurally sound. Whether in pickets or a split rail design, traditional wooden fences need routine maintenance. From restaining and resealing to replacing posts and more, the labor needed to keep a wooden fence in working order is typically greater for large properties.

On the other hand, steel fences are virtually maintenance-free. Industryleading systems sport a weather-resistant powder coat, so they stay beautiful and structurally sound year after year. Additionally, by sidelining the need to use harsh chemicals, steel options prevent harmful pollutants from entering nearby ecosystems—a vital quality for fencing in rural areas.”

Steel fence panels follow grade changes, speed up installation. The best fencing for large acreage properties should be quick and easy-to-install. Steel fence panels can come in sizes up to eight feet in length. Because select options like VERSAI® ornamental steel fencing from Fortress Building Products, can adjust up to 48 inches per panel to follow grade changes across uneven terrain, they can speed up installation on even the most unruly properties. These steel fence panels’ ability to adjust to terrain without creating metal fatigue or compromising their powder coating also work to reduce long-term maintenance. For these reasons, choosing rackable steel panels is one of the best ways to fence a large property.”

“Ornamental steel fencing checks off all the boxes for enclosing large properties,” adds Adams. “Of course, the best fencing for large properties is the one that most readily fits a customer’s needs. VERSAI ornamental steel fencing can preserve sightlines, follows grade changes and is easy to maintain, making it an ideal choice for large scale fencing products.”

Centurion Ornamental: Hand-Crafted for Beauty and Security

Ornamental steel fences are ideal for pools, backyards, businesses, government, transportation, educational facilities and much more, offering timeless beauty along with security. This explains why it is the most popular and commonly installed decorative fence in the United States.

The exclusive Centurion line from Stephens Pipe and Steel meets a variety of fencing needs, from architectural and landscaping enhancement to security and safety. Centurion offers a wide range of all-steel residential, commercial and industrial ornamental fence and gates. “Our gate division was established to keep up with the demand for custom gates to complement the Centurion fence styles,” says Kyle Holland with Stephens. “And like the fence components, our Centurion gates are only made in Kentucky and are a remarkable example of American craftsmanship, offering unmatched attention to detail by our fabricators.”

There are six different styles of Centurion gates to add the finishing piece to a variety of ornamental fence styles:

• Defender

• Enforcer

• Fortress

• Gladiator

• Spartan

• Titan

Within each style, there are endless customization possibilities to meet design specifications, including width and height; single or double; number and spacing of rails; arches; decorative elements; color coatings; automation; security enhancements and more.

“Stephens is a leader in custom made gates,” explains Holland. “From swing gates to cantilever, rolling to estate gates, we can build the perfect gate for any project. We’ll take your opening size from post to post and do the math for you. And with a custom

hand-crafted gate, you’re assured the best possible fit, with years of dependability.”

Each Centurion gate component is formed from high- quality carbon steel, which is subjected to hot- dipped galvanized coating for corrosion resistance. A layer of phosphate prepares the galvanized steel for the DuraLast finish, which is applied electrostatically and thermally bonded after fabrication, providing a long-lasing, high-gloss finish that also ensures that all welds and joints are fully protected against corrosion. The result is a gate that requires no maintenance and carries a 12-year warranty.

“Whatever the project, there is a Centurion gate to not only meet the specifications, but also add beauty, grace and proportion,” says Holland. “We’re very proud of the Centurion system and all it offers, including custom gates, as a product manufactured by the largest American owned fence manufacturer and distributer.”

CASE STUDY: Wood Supplier Chooses Aluminum to Secure Their Facility

When Boise Cascade® built a new distribution facility in Walton, Kentucky, an important decision needed to be made about how to secure their property while also enhancing its appearance.

Wright Contracting had been hired as the general contractor and under the guidance of their representative, Randy Reno, they were fortunate that they didn’t have to look far to find a company to handle the perimeter fencing.

“I’ve worked with R&M Fence several times over the years,” says Reno. “And it just so happens that their facility is directly across the street from this project, so it was seamless, from a service perspective.”

R&M Fence is a Walton, Kentucky-based fence contractor and supplier in business since 1999. They install all types of fencing as well as servicing other fence contractors through their wholesale division.

Since they had worked together on previous projects, Charlene Gripshover and Ryan Nunn from R&M knew what to expect from Wright Contracting, but like any large fence project, there were several elements to discuss, such as right-of-way clearance for the neighboring railroad, grade issues that would impact gates and working together for approval through Boone County planning and zoning.

Fortunately, one decision didn’t need discussion, which was the company who would supply the fence. “Ultra Aluminum has been our

supplier since we started,” says Gripshover. “We knew that their industrial-grade fence would provide us the highest quality while keeping within the customer’s budget.”

Ultra Aluminum manufactures and distributes a full line of aluminum fence, gates and codeapproved railing for residential, commercial, and industrial applications throughout North America. They are a whole-owned subsidiary of Deckorators®, a UFP Industries company.

“Ease of installation is important when doing large projects,” says Nunn. “Whether the job is across the state or across the street, getting my crews in and out as quickly as possible is good for my business and good for the customer.”

After working with Boise Cascade representative Mark Nelson to discuss some of the finer details of the project, work began on installing 2100’ of Ultra’s 7’ tall UAF-200 4-rail fence. Two 30’ gate openings would typically call for cantilever slide gates, but the decision was made to use swing gates due to grade and clearance issues.

“Ultra has always made a very strong gate and we’ve installed quite a few large ones over the years, so we were confident that it was the right choice for this job,” says Gripshover.

The project was completed by a five-person crew in less than seven days.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to know Charlene and Ryan for many years,” says Ben Jodoin from Ultra Aluminum. “They’ve played a big part in

Ultra’s success. Not only do they have a great business, but they also happen to be great people. It’s no wonder that they’ve become one of the leading fence companies in the state.”

With security being a growing problem throughout the country, sometimes the solution to the problem is right in front of you, or in this case, just across the street.

FENCENEWS.COM | OCTOBER 2023 37
Lack of clearance required the use of a large, swing gate rather than the typical cantilever for this 30’ opening. Ultra Aluminum’s UAF 200 Style 6’ wide fence sections are used to achieve a sweeping radius.

Add Some Curve Appeal with Aluminum Arches

Fencing in general has a lot of straight lines, both vertical and horizontal. One way to add dimension and interest is by adding an arch to the gate. Adding a gentle curve to the top of a gate to create an arch is just enough variation from the traditional horizontal fence theme to add a nice design element. Archways in general provide a welcoming aesthetic. In fact, having arches at a point of entry to a home or property dates all the way back to the Romans, with many different civilizations using the style over the years.

According to Ronny Richker with Great Fence, a leading fence and supply company based in Houston, Texas, if you are searching for a classically styled aluminum gate arch, there are many options to choose from. “The hardest part will likely be narrowing down what would look best for your project and getting the exact measurements needed. Choose your height and then add the arch. Arch height varies based upon the width of your gate.”

He says premium American aluminum is a very popular choice for fencing and gates because of the top quality of the metal and its longevity with minimal upkeep. “You have a wide variety of style choices for fencing and gates, including different colors, sizes and other special features, including arches, to suit your project.”

With arches being so timeless as an entryway, it’s only natural that arches are popular on driveway gates. “Not only is the look classic and elegant, but it is also practical,” says Richker. “A horizontaltopped aluminum fence with an arched entry point clearly identifies where to enter a property. Having a large arch on a driveway gate, along with a smaller arch on a footpath gate, will create a very cohesive look.”

The top of an aluminum fence as well as any arched panels or gate can be decorated with different shapes and looks to provide a customized look. Richker says there are options such as pressed spears, classic spears, and finials in different colors to provide an interesting contrast. “Another option that is very popular for topping an arched gate panel is adding rings or circles right below the top bar to replicate the curve or the arch.”

Richker adds that arches have much broader applications than fence gates. They look great on aluminum arbors, with an arched center section having a slightly curved look to denote a welcoming entryway.

“Arches don’t always have to curve up,” says Richker. “Reverse arches offer a unique way to break up the horizontal and vertical lines and give an entryway added dimension and intrigue.”

He explains that arched entryways don’t necessarily need to be attached to aluminum metal posts if you want a different

look. “Aluminum gate panels can be attached to different styles of posts, such as brick or stone, to create a unique blend of materials for your desired look.”

Aluminum arches don’t require any additional upkeep and are as easy to maintain as aluminum metal fence panels thanks to a strong powder coating on the surface of the aluminum. This powder coating keeps the aluminum free from moisture so the aluminum can withstand extreme weather and wear and tear.

DoorBird Launches a Contact-Free Call Button Module

A contact-free call button module was recently launched by DoorBird, part of the Bird Home Automation Group that develops and manufacturers high-quality IP video door intercoms, access control devices, indoor stations and accessories.

The new contact-free call button module enables doors to be opened without having to touch them. This technology was developed to promote safe, simple, and aseptic use, and not just in public areas. Ringing the doorbell by waving is an efficient solution for any building with a high level of foot traffic. Depending on the configuration, a gesture in front of the door intercom system can either ring the doorbell or open the door instantaneously.

“A germ-free environment is critically important in public facilities such as hospitals, medical practices, and nursing homes to limit and prevent health risks for people,” explains Cora Duenkel, director of marketing with DoorBird. “An IP video door station with a contactfree call button module can be useful in such places. Visitors can intuitively ring the doorbell by making a simple hand gesture and are also given direct visual feedback from the module.”

The intelligent motion sensor detects both hand movements as well as a hand coming from within 10 cm /4 inches of the module. This also allows someone to ring the doorbell while holding a package, for example.

The contact-free call button module is compatible with DoorBird D21x series’ IP video door stations and is available to order now. The scope of delivery includes the sensor panel cover with information provided in German, English, Spanish, French and Italian.

Veteran Receives Fence from the Carolinas Chapter of AFA

The Carolinas Chapter of the American Fence Association once again partnered with Purple Heart Homes by donating labor and materials to build a fence for a veteran. This is the sixth veteran’s fence provided by the chapter, which has donated over $60,000 in labor and materials for Purple Heart Homes projects. This year’s recipient was Shakira from North Carolina, a US Army veteran. The fence provides a safe area for her service dog and is a tangible expression of gratitude for her service.

Several local and regional fence companies and suppliers coordinated efforts:

• Eastern Wholesale Fence – donated the fence materials and labor

• Allison Fence / Seegars Fence – donated the concrete and labor

• Trex Fence / SRF Fence and Supply – coordinated the project and donated labor

• Easter Fencing – donated labor

• Superior Fence and Rail – donated labor

“The leadership of the Carolinas Chapter of the AFA has a heart for giving and serving,” explains Jon McCoy, sales manager with Eastern Wholesale Fence. “We make several donations throughout the year to different organizations, offer scholarships for training, support members and families in need, but serving our veterans through Purple Heart Homes has become a passion for our group. In doing this project, we’ve learned that providing security to our veterans in the form of a fence is an important part of their recovery and re-entry into a nonmilitary lifestyle once they return from active duty. Something as simple as a fence can provide comfort and security for a veteran who has given so much for us.”

Deckorators® Launches 2023 Outdoor Living Report

Trend-leading brand leverages insights from experts in the field

Deckorators, composite decking and outdoor lifestyle brand, tapped outdoor living experts and members of their Certified Pro Program to gather insights and trends on how homeowners will be choosing to utilize their outdoor spaces in the coming year. The results can be found in Deckorators 2023 Outdoor Living Report which contextualizes upcoming trends in design, building, and outdoor living.

“What our experts are seeing is an overall desire from homeowners to maximize their outdoor spaces and what that means for them in terms of quality time being spent outside,” says Michelle Hendricks, category marketing manager, Deckorators. “At Deckorators, we strive to empower our customers to imagine the full potential of what their outdoor spaces can be and how they can utilize our products to create new and meaningful memories outside.”

Highlights of the 2023 Outdoor Living Report: • Natural Neutrals: Imagine the ultimate outdoor escape. Drawing inspiration from nature for a timeless look that incorporates warm wood tones and organic textures, natural neutrals usher in the return of a timeless aesthetic that is equally rustic and contemporary.

• 365 Living: Flexible, all-season solutions. Gone are the days of only utilizing your outdoor space for the occasional BBQ or get-together. 365 Living is all about transforming the deck, yard or patio into a space that can be utilized for everyday relaxation.

in their outdoor spaces as areas for gathering and entertaining as well as escapism and relaxation. Access and download the full Deckorators 2023 Outdoor Living Report, at deckorators.com

• Dreaming Bigger: Outdoor living maximalism. It’s a new frontier for outdoor living features, where all the amenities of home can be at homeowners’ fingertips — without endless back-and-forth trips inside.

Yee Haw!

• Total Look: Thinking big picture with materials. An outdoor space isn’t truly finished until you’ve finalized the finishing touches. For this trend, experts are thinking holistically about the elements that unify a project with its surroundings and the home.

Across trend categories, the report found a marked increase in the amount of time people want to spend outside. This can be seen in homeowner’s choosing to continue investing

5 Reasons to Build During the Fall Season

Building a deck during the fall season offers numerous benefits that you shouldn’t overlook when working with customers. Here are five compelling reasons to consider building a deck in autumn:

COMFORTABLE WEATHER: Fall brings pleasant temperatures, making it an ideal time to embark on construction projects. The oppressive summer heat has subsided, allowing you to work comfortably without the risk of extreme temperatures.

AVAILABILITY: Unlike the busy spring and summer seasons when contractors’ schedules are packed, fall provides an

COST SAVINGS:

There are no guarantees, building a deck in the fall can be more affordable. When suppliers start to clear out their stock and load up on new products for the next season, they often discount their existing stock, leading to cost savings.

TIME FOR PLANNING AND DESIGN:

Building in the fall gives you ample time to plan and design a deck project. You can take inspiration from the trends and styles that were popular during the summer and tailor them to a customer’s specific needs.

EXTENDED ENJOYMENT:

Completing deck construction in the fall, allows the homeowner to start enjoying their outdoor space sooner. Whether it’s hosting gatherings, enjoying family time, or simply unwinding outdoors, they’ll have more time to make the most of their

Digger Specialties Updates Aluminum Railing Line

Digger Specialties Inc. (DSI) recently announced the latest update to their Westsbury® Aluminum Railing line, specifically Tuscany Series and VertiCable®. With the ever-changing building codes, it is essential to keep up with the latest requirements to ensure safety. The DSI team is launching a new and improved version of their popular Westbury Aluminum Railing line.

The primary focus of this update is to meet the more stringent 2018 and 2021 requirements for deflection ratings on the top rail of guardrail systems. The research and design department has made internal updates to the top rail of each Westbury style offered by DSI, without changing the railing’s aesthetics once installed. The sleek and modern look remains, while being code-compliant.

The first two styles being introduced with the heavier top rail are Tuscany Series (C10 and C101) and VertiCable (C80). In addition to the updates made to the top rail, other components such as crossover posts and accessory crossover components have also been updated to ensure they work seamlessly with the new top rail design. These updates were completed earlier this year; the products are up to code and ready for installation.

The new Code Compliance Research Report (CCRR) number for the 2018 and 2021 codes will be listed on the DSI website as soon as it is received. The structural engineering report for the Tuscany and VertiCable models will also be listed on the website. The final analysis to create a CCRR from the engineering report could take a few months.

The updates ensure the DSI products are compliant with the latest building codes and regulations, giving peace of mind to contractors as they select DSI products for their projects. The current CCRR-0163 is

valid for areas where the 2015 and 2012 codes are still in effect. DSI will continue to utilize this CCRR report through October 2024.

During the transition period, both the current and updated versions of the Westbury styles will be available simultaneously. The DSI team has worked diligently to ensure that the updated styles will meet the highest quality standards.

Ted Eysenbach

With 34 years as general manager of Stephens Pipe and Steel, Ted Eysenbach brings experience, wisdom and a healthy dose of good humor to the table.

From his early days playing in bands, he made a career move to the fencing industry. He is a long-time sailor who enjoys sailing offshore as a means to recharge his batteries. Check out his thoughts on the future of the fencing industry and how SPS keeps customers at the forefront.

WHAT WAS YOUR CAREER PATH TO THIS POINT?

After working on the railroad for several years and weary of the traveling, I went to work at Allied Tube as a shipping supervisor. After holding several positions, I was promoted to build and operate the infamous Steelwood plant in Antioch, California.

When the plant closed, I was offered the position of general manager in the NP products division back in Harvey, Illinois. I jumped at it. It was there I met Terry Stephens. Stephens Pipe and Steel (SPS) was one of our biggest customers. We became friends. After a brief departure from Allied, Terry called and offered me a job to help him grow the business. It has worked out well.

DID YOU PLAN TO WORK IN THE FENCING INDUSTRY, OR DID YOU HAVE ANOTHER CAREER IN MIND?

Nope, I never saw it coming. When I was 19, I was in a good rock band, playing around the Midwest, backing up bigger bands. Oh my! It was a riot! I thought it was my future -- guess again! Here came the draft, and there went the band.

In 1974, I went to work on the railroad. Traveling a lot. When the love of my life, Pam, entered the picture, I knew I needed something more settled, so I took a job at Allied Tube. And the rest is history.

WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES AS GENERAL MANAGER?

Let’s see: I buy steel, I sell steel. I supervise our advertising and graphics efforts. I work with sales folk, imparting sage advice, wisdom and knowledge. I help them with non-fencing

products that we carry. I handle a lot of trade shows, particularly in the retail side of our business.

One thing I don’t do is cook. We have a commercial grade kitchen in the office and plenty of topnotch cooks masquerading as sales and staff. If you have never had Donna’s strawberry pie, you have never had strawberry pie.

WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR JOB THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD FIND SURPRISING?

People would be surprised to know how much fun it is. Terry tells a story about talking to a songwriter in Nashville one evening. Terry asked the man what he remembered most over the many years he played and wrote music. He answered, “Laughter. We laughed for all those years.”

Well, at SPS, we have laughed for decades, all the while growing the business to where it is today. That will never change.

WHAT ARE A FEW THINGS YOU REALLY ENJOY ABOUT YOUR JOB AND THE FENCING INDUSTRY?

My work family, our vendor and customer family. We do business with people we like. We have a unique dynamic.

There is a core of people who are all turning 71 this year. Most of us have been together for decades, and many others have been with us for 25+ years. The next generation is onboard and

moving up. I always laugh that we’re one big, crazy family. There is no company better than ours.

WHAT IS YOUR PROJECTION ABOUT THE FENCING INDUSTRY FIVE TO 10 YEARS FROM NOW?

Two industries will drive the fence business for the next five years: energy and security. Whether that is a sub-station surrounded by mini-mesh or a prison sally port, these are features of the future of fence.

In ten years? I’ll be retired by then. Maybe.

HOW DOES SPS KEEP THE FOUNDING PRINCIPLES OF EXCELLENCE IN PLACE WITH 18 LOCATIONS AND MORE THAN 1300 EMPLOYEES?

From the first day in November of 1974, SPS has been customer driven. Everything we do is geared toward making sure our customer has what they need, when they need it. As a result, we have grown to 18 well-stocked locations. We are deliberate when deciding about a new branch. Most importantly, we find the who, the branch manager, before we decide the where. All our branches are run by people who have been in the fence industry for years and operate by the same philosophy: customer service first.

HOW DID SPS HANDLE THE RECENT SUPPLY CHAIN CHALLENGES?

We suffered through it like everyone else. We were fortunate to have our own tube mills and GAW plant. We could make fabric at many branch locations but, it was nip and tuck for a while. Thank God we never ran out. Today is better, but there are still challenges.

WHAT ADVICE HAVE YOU RECEIVED THAT HAS HELPED YOU IN YOUR CAREER?

My father taught me to “always tell the truth, it’s easy to remember.” Terry’s maxim is, “You only have 10 minutes to be mad about a situation because in 10 minutes something will come along that will make you madder!”

WHO ARE YOUR BUSINESS MENTORS?

There are several, but I’ll name three. Terry Stephens has that rare ability to put himself in another man’s shoes and to look at a situation from all sides. That has made for good sound decisions.

Ted Krengel had an idea for a tubing process unlike any other. Many told him it would never work. Through sheer determination and persistence, he made it happen. The result was Allied Tube.

Lastly, my friend Mark Levin, executive director of the Chain Link Manufacturer’s Institute. Mark has kept a light hand on the wheel, steadily guiding the CLFMI for more than 30 years. He has pushed and prodded us to many achievements in that time and made it look easy. I assure you; it is not.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE BUSINESS AND LEISURE TIME?

It all blends together. I have been a life-long sailor and I try to make an offshore passage whenever I can. Nothing is as peaceful as being surrounded by miles and miles of water. Those typically last two to three weeks, and even longer. Enough time to recharge the batteries until next time.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU’VE LEARNED OVER THE COURSE OF YOUR CAREER THAT YOU WISH YOU HAD KNOWN SOONER?

The parable of the sower. Matthew 13:1 – 9 is one of my favorite scriptures. In my twilight, I seek to grow in Christ, like the seed in the good soil.

When we were younger, and could stay up past midnight, many things that happened both good and bad, seemed to be of earth-shaking importance. I hope that as we grow older, we realize the difference between what is important and what is just noise. Turns out, it’s mostly noise. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

TimberTech® Decking, TimberTech Railing and AZEK® Exteriors Trim Ranked #1 Brands Most Used by Residential Contractors; TimberTech Decking Ranked Highest in Brand Quality

The AZEK Company Inc., the industry-leading manufacturer of beautiful, low-maintenance and environmentally sustainable outdoor living products, including TimberTech® decking and railing, Versatex® and AZEK® Trim, and StruXure™ pergolas, recently announced that TimberTech composite/PVC decking, TimberTech railing and AZEK Exteriors trim ranked as the #1 most used brands by residential pro contractors across the United States, according to Zonda’s JLC 2023 Brand Use Study. TimberTech decking also ranked highest in brand stickiness analyzed in Zonda’s Building Product Outlook Report.

“These survey results demonstrate the strong momentum of our TimberTech and AZEK brands as well as our category leadership and loyalty among pro contractors,” says Jonathan Skelly, president – residential segment, The AZEK Company. “Our commitments to new product innovation and contractor productivity combined with our material science expertise and best in class customer service is enabling us to win, build trust and gain mindshare with our contractor partners. We have welcomed more than one

thousand pro contractors into our loyalty program over the last year and will continue to support all our pros in creating beautiful, low-maintenance outdoor living spaces that their clients will enjoy for a lifetime.”

In a study of major brands across various building products categories, TimberTech decking ranked among the highest in brand stickiness alongside brands such as Owens Corning and GAF. Zonda defines their brand stickiness metric as awareness plus commitment. High brand awareness is an indication of effective marketing investments and meaningful distribution levels. Brands with high awareness have the inherent advantages of availability and likelihood to be in the pro’s consideration set. Commitment indicates resilience, a lack of willingness to switch brands within a category. Together, awareness and commitment indicate brand stickiness.

In addition to brand most used, Zonda’s JLC 2023 Brand Use Study also ranked TimberTech decking #1 in quality. “The durability and longevity of TimberTech products is outstanding, and my clients love how beautiful and natural the finished

product looks,” says Chris Breen, Owner of Legacy Decks. “My experience working with TimberTech is much more than just a business transaction. Not only do they offer some of the best woodalternative outdoor living products available, but they also support me with tools, training and resources to help grow my business.”

“I have been installing AZEK Exteriors products for years because they are far superior to wood products,” says Cameron Buck, Owner of C. Buck Professional Builders. “AZEK products look better, last longer and will not rot. For me and most professional builders, reputation is vital to the continued growth and success of our businesses. I know that AZEK products will last for decades, enabling me to both uphold my reputation as a builder and meet, if not exceed, my customers’ expectations.”

Ipe Woods USA Plants 5,600 Trees in Amazon Rainforest to Promote Sustainability

Ipe Woods USA, a leading supplier of exotic hardwood materials in the United States, announced a major milestone in their ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability. Led by CEO Stebem Rossi, the company has successfully planted over 5,600 trees in the Amazon Rainforest, underscoring their dedication to preserving the environment even as they provide premium wood products to their customers. This proactive approach to sustainable practices aligns with their emphasis on responsible wood sourcing and the significance of trees in today’s society.

Ipe Woods USA distinguishes itself in an industry often associated with deforestation concerns by prioritizing environmental responsibility. As part of their ethos, the company plants a minimum of five trees in the Amazon Rainforest for every single order placed. This strategic initiative ensures a positive ecological impact that goes beyond the resources used, exemplifying their holistic approach to business.

Stebem Rossi, CEO of Ipe Woods USA, notes, “Our commitment to planting trees in the Amazon Rainforest showcases our dedication to giving back more than we take. Every piece of Ipe wood we sell becomes an opportunity to contribute to a healthier planet, a goal that guides our operations.”

Trees play a pivotal role in carbon sequestration, oxygen production, and biodiversity preservation. Ipe Woods USA recognizes this significance and extends its mission beyond wood sales to actively participate in the restoration of the Amazon Rainforest’s ecosystem.

Ipe wood’s exceptional durability contributes

to resource efficiency. Its longevity reduces the need for frequent replacement, a key factor in minimizing environmental impact. Unlike synthetic materials that contribute to landfills and environmental degradation, real wood, such as Ipe, is both sustainable and recyclable. This attribute aligns with the company’s broader goal of advancing sustainable construction practices.

Ipe Woods USA believes human housing and environmental preservation can coexist harmoniously. While acknowledging the journey ahead, the company remains steadfast in finding innovative solutions that bridge the gap between construction needs and environmental

concerns. Their commitment to planting trees and promoting responsible wood practices underscores their dedication to this cause.

By choosing Ipe wood products, consumers contribute to a sustainable future while benefiting from a natural resource that offers longevity and durability. Ipe Woods USA’s dedication to tree planting, responsible wood utilization, and promoting the recyclability of real wood showcases their forward-thinking approach and sets a benchmark for environmentally conscious practices within the industry.

Fastenal Teams with Trex to Turn Used Plastic into Outdoor Building Product

One of the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives of Fastenal Company is to reduce consumption and environmental impacts throughout its operations and provide solutions for its customers to do the same. To support this objective, Fastenal has entered into a scrap supply agreement with Trex Company, Inc., the world’s leading manufacturer of wood-alternative composite decking, railing, and other outdoor building products made from recycled materials. The entire portfolio of Trex composite decking is made from 95% recycled and reclaimed materials, including a mix of polyethylene (PE) film and industrial wood scrap.

Through the partnership, Fastenal is collecting used PE film in its distribution centers, branches, and customer-specific Onsite locations and shipping it to Trex to use the material in the manufacture of its composite decking products. PE film (familiarly known as “pallet wrap” in the distribution industry) is used by Fastenal and its suppliers to secure boxes and other packaging to pallets for shipment.

“Pallet wrap is vital to our daily operations, but once the product is unwrapped, we have no use for it,” says Dave Olson, director of EHS & Sustainability for Fastenal. “Working with Trex to turn all that potential waste into sustainable outdoor building products is a win for both organizations.”

To support the program, Fastenal has invested more than $300,000 in equipment and infrastructure in its United States distribution centers to efficiently bale and consolidate used PE film for recycling by Trex. In the first year of the program, Fastenal expects to divert an estimated 600,000 pounds of plastic from landfills through material collected within its distribution centers (where a high volume of pallet wrap is received as part of inbound shipments from suppliers). In addition, more than 2,500 U.S. Fastenal branches and Onsite locations can participate by using Fastenal’s regular truck routes to back-haul used material to the nearest distribution center for baling, consolidation, and shipment to Trex.

Each year, Trex repurposes in excess of one billion pounds of reclaimed materials in the making of its products, including approximately 400 million pounds of plastic film, making it one of the largest recyclers of PE film in North America. Through its NexTrex® Recycling Program, Trex partners with commercial businesses and community organizations across the country to collect and transport recycled plastic material to its manufacturing facilities in Winchester, Virginia and Fernley, Nevada.

“We applaud Fastenal’s commitment to creating a more sustainable business model by participating in the NexTrex Recycling Program,” says Dave Heglas, senior director of supply chain excellence for Trex. “The contributions of eco-minded partners, like Fastenal, are not only integral to our manufacturing process, but also critical to addressing our country’s growing plastic waste problem.”

What Did We Learn, or Forget, Over the Summer?

Ah, fall. For many people, especially those of us who live in cooler climates, this is the best time of the year. The “dog days of summer” and all the accompanying heat are gone, and kids are back in school.

Which brings me to something I’ve always wondered: do adults lose as much information over the summer as schoolchildren?

According to a five-year study published in the American Education Research Journal, 52% of young students lost an average of 39% of their total school year gains during the summer months. That’s a lot of time and effort wasted last school year, and an additional waste of time and effort re-teaching it.

As adults, we can retain more information for longer than those little schoolchildren. Let’s look at some of the things we talked about over this past summer and see what we’ve retained from those discussions.

1) Late last spring, we kicked off the summer season by reminding everyone that safety in the fencing industry isn’t limited to physical safety. Mental and emotional safety is critical to maintaining a safe work environment for all our employees.

Have you started, or updated, your company’s policies on:

• drug and alcohol use

• employee health benefits to deal with emotional and mental issues, harassment and bullying in the workplace

• time-off policies to deal with stress and related issues

• training for supervisors to identify warning signs and how to deal with employees showing symptoms of depression while protecting the employees’ right to privacy? Or did we get so busy over the summer with vacations, workloads, heavy demands, etc. that we did not get around to it? Now might be a great time to do it.

2) In June, there was a story about learning what one satisfied customer is worth to a business. Have you had a chance to take another look at your company’s customer service performance? Did you include training as part of your new employee orientation? Did you communicate to your employees the concept of the lifetime value of a satisfied customer for your company, and what role each person plays in meeting customer expectations? Were you able to identify what metrics you are going to use to measure customer satisfaction from this point on?

Customer service and satisfaction isn’t a seasonal activity. It must be a year-round priority. You can’t take the summer off and gear up again in the fall.

3) In July, we focused on women in fencing. The summer should have been a perfect time to not only commit, or re-commit, to attracting more women to your company, and the fencing industry. It was also the best time to start testing some new ideas for expanding the role with women in your company.

Did you try some summer internships with high school students to expose them to fence industry careers? Did you hold an open house for recent high school and college graduates to let them see what opportunities are available right now? Did you start talking to any experienced women employees in your company about being mentors or coaches to more women who are just starting in their jobs?

More than 50% of the workforce in the US is made up of women. The fence industry percentage is way below that. We can’t put off taking advantage of this huge potential source of future industry leaders any longer. Start gearing up now to make 2024 a year of expanded recruitment of women in fencing.

4) In August, we discussed one of the most important, yet overlooked leadership skills: effective listening. We talked about how being a better listener not only allows industry leaders to gain new ideas and understand other perspectives, but it also gives employees a sense of empowerment and recognition. The hardest part of becoming a more effective listener is giving yourself the time necessary to develop that skill. Just remembering to listen more closely or to use enough facial and hand gestures to show you are paying attention isn’t enough; you must also make effective listening a natural way of communicating with your employees.

Looking back, it seems to be a lot of important topics to cover and ideas to implement in one season. So, let’s prioritize. Choose one idea or suggestion from each topic area and give it a try this fall if you haven’t already done so. Choose one area of emphasis, such as customer service, and focus on that for the next couple of months, then evaluate what impact you believe you are making in that area.

Ever since childhood, it’s easy to “unlearn” during the summer. When you are running a business, you don’t have the luxury of trying to catch up during the fall.

New RailFX Express Mount Brackets Make Installing Cable Railing Faster and Easier

The new RailFX® Express Mount Brackets™ make installing cable railing faster and easier for professional installers. These patent-pending brackets eliminate the need to drill holes through wood deck posts and offer a solution for installing cable railing with basic tools and minimal training.

To install cable railing using the Express Mount Brackets, contractors simply install the appropriate bracket on the exterior of all wood deck posts, feed the cable through the brackets and tighten the cables to secure it.

The brackets are only viewable from the outside of the deck, creating the illusion of floating cables and improving sightlines to the scenery beyond.

Homeowners can use the RailFX drilling template to ensure cables are installed evenly and level, providing an upscale finishing touch to decks and patios.

Professional deck installers and contractors can also take advantage of the speed and ease of installation. Express Mount Brackets make cable railing more accessible to a wider variety of customers as a lower-cost option available for installation. Because they’re easy to use, Express Mount Brackets allow installers to complete jobs in less time, with fewer tools and less training.

RailFX Express Mount Brackets are available through the RailFX dealer network, at home centers, hardware stores and lumberyards nationwide. To learn more, visit railfx.net/express-mount-brackets.

BE YOUR OWN LIFE COACH Management Corner

You may have heard of life coaching. Basically, life coaches are people who help you solve problems and make decisions, whether you are facing personal or career challenges. It is different from therapy – there’s no deep background dive or gentle leading to an ah-ha moment. Life coaches tend to tell it like it is, which works well for many people. However, life coaching can be expensive – often $500 or more per hour!

One option, if you want the benefit without the cost, is to take matters into your own hands and be your own life coach. Here’s how:

Identify the areas you want to work on. The first step is to honestly assess your strengths and weaknesses. Ask yourself these questions:

• What are you good at?

• What do you need to be better at?

• What do others feel your strengths and weaknesses are?

• How well do you form and maintain relationships?

• What are your biggest fears?

Identify your goals. Now that you have identified what you are already good at and what you need to get better at, your goals will be focused on making positive progress in both areas. Keep getting better at the positive things, while at the same time addressing areas you need to grow in. Ask yourself these questions:

• What do you love to do?

• What are your interests/passions?

• What are things you despise doing but need to do? Your answers to these questions will help you identify the areas to focus on. Your goal will reflect small steps in each of the areas. If you are passionate about animals, another goal might be to volunteer at an animal shelter once a month. If something you need to do but hate doing is office paperwork, then your goal could be to spend an hour a day tackling this task. If you do more, great, but start small so you can set yourself up for success. You can expand from there.

Document your progress. Start a journal and record the actions you take each day that move you towards your goal. If you called the animal shelter to find out about volunteering, that goes in the journal. If you eliminated one pile of papers, give yourself credit. Every step, no matter how small, gets recorded. It can take up to 6 months for a new habit to be formed. Just keep taking those steps!

Don’t give up. Of course, you will get off track at times. The real question is, how are you going to manage the setback? Are you going to beat yourself up, or will you accept that you cannot change what has already happened and get refocused on moving forward?

If you fail miserably, you need to ask yourself if your goal is something you truly want. If the answer is “no,” then it wasn’t a good goal for you from the start. If the answer is “yes,” then re-commit. If it is truly important to you, you will be willing to keep failing until you make progress.

Trex Company Launches New Community Recycling Challenge

Trex Company is making it easier to be green. They have revamped their popular NexTrex® Plastic Film Recycling Challenge with a more streamlined structure that simplifies the process and makes the program accessible to a broader range of participants.

Launched in August, the updated NexTrex® Recycling Challenge combines the company’s award-winning community and school recycling programs and moves from a competition-driven model to a self-initiated challenge. Additionally, Trex has made the process easier and more equitable so more participants have the opportunity to earn recognition and rewards for their recycling efforts. Under the new structure, any participating organization that collects at least 1,000 pounds of recycled plastic film during a 12-month period qualifies to receive a composite bench from the Trex Outdoor Furniture™ Collection.

“As a company founded on eco-friendly values, Trex is committed to educating and engaging the public in the responsible recycling of plastic film,” explains Emily Whitacre, recycling programs coordinator for Trex Company. “Over the past 16 years, our partnerships with schools and community groups have become a primary channel for sourcing this key ingredient for our products and we want to make it as easy as possible for these like-minded organizations to be part of our upcycling process.”

Built on eco-friendly values, Trex’s composite decking is sustainable made from 95% recycled materials, including a mix of industrial wood-scrap and polyethylene (PE) plastic film upcycled from common household items such as grocery/shopping bags, sandwich bags, case overwrap, newspaper sleeves and much more. Each year, the company repurposes in excess of one billion pounds of these reclaimed materials in the making of its outdoor living products, including approximately 400 million pounds of plastic film, making it one of the largest recyclers of PE in North America.

“With the NexTrex program, you not only know where your recycled plastic film is going but also how it will be used,” Whitacre notes. “With the help of thousands of community partners across the country, we are able to divert millions of pounds of plastic waste each year from ending up in landfills and give it new life as beautiful and sustainable Trex decking.”

Participating in the NexTrex Recycling Challenge is easy and requires just five simple steps:

1) Register on NexTrex.com to obtain access to the My Trex Portal.

2) Determine a 12-month collection time period (starting any time).

3) Collect a minimum of 1,000 pounds of plastic film.

4) Report recycling totals at my.trex.com.

5) Deliver collected plastic film to a participating retailer for recycling. The list is available at nextrex.com

Trex provides all registered participants with up to three collection bins along with promotional posters explaining the pogram and displaying images of qualifying recyclable materials. A Complete list of qualifying materials along with easy-to-navigate educational resources are available at nextrex.com, including an animated video that provides an overview of the program and how it works.

“We are eater to welcome returning and new participants into the NexTrex program under this streamlined structure,” adds Whitacre. “It’s always inspiring to see the creativity, enthusiasm and dedication these grassroots sustainability heroes bring to their recycling efforts. Together, we can make a global impact on plastic waste and create a greener future for everyone.

To Dig or Not to Dig

The no-dig fence installation phenomenon has grown leaps and bounds over the past year. This method has been around for decades and perfected by the agricultural fence professionals, but recently has been thrust onto the residential and commercial fence contractors in a big way.

This method, known as driving or pounding post, is now being used by residential and commercial fence contractors and has grown in popularity, due to social media and the desire to make the workload easier and save time.

Installing a no-dig fence offers several benefits for fence contractors. This type of fencing system eliminates the need for extensive digging and concrete work, regardless of if you are a wet set or dry pack follower.

A key component is that the no-dig system will not work for all areas of the country. To determine if this process is doable in your region, do your homework and due diligence to discuss with other no-dig contractors and do your own testing in the area to confirm for yourself if this method will be a good fit for your company.

Please note that the Fence ASTM Standards supports driving of post and is an approved method.

The following are some of the key benefits of a no-dig fence installation:

• Timesaving: No-dig fence installations are quicker to set up compared to traditional fences, as they don’t require digging post holes and mixing concrete. This can significantly reduce the overall installation time.

• Cost-effective: While the initial cost of a nodig fence system might be slightly higher than traditional fencing materials, because of the equipment required, the savings from reduced labor and materials for digging and concrete can make it a cost-effective choice in the long run.

• Minimal disruption: Traditional fence installations can disrupt the landscape, requiring

extensive excavation work. No-dig fences leave the yard or property relatively undisturbed, preserving the aesthetics of the outdoor space.

• Environmentally friendly: Because no-dig fences require less excavation and concrete, they can be considered more environmentally friendly. They minimize the environmental impact associated with traditional fence installations.

• Versatility: No-dig fences come in various styles, materials, and heights, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your needs and aesthetics. They are adaptable to various settings, from residential to commercial properties. Many new manufacturers of no-dig fences have grown, as well.

• Suitable for various terrains: No-dig fences work well on different types of terrain, including rocky or uneven ground, where traditional fence installation might be challenging, but as previously stated, do your homework and evaluate the use for your company in your area.

No-dig fence systems have been used by traditional fence contractors primarily for temporary style fence but are now being used for permanent fencing needs. Many nodig fence systems are designed to be aesthetically pleasing, enhancing the overall look of your property. They often come in a variety of colors and styles to match your preferences.

While no-dig fences offer numerous advantages, it’s essential to select the right type of fence system for your specific needs and property. Consider factors such as the type of material, style, and intended use to ensure you make the best choice for your situation.

Coming from old-school methods, I believe the no-dig concept should be considered by our industry professionals.

Reclaimed Tropical Hardwoods Added to Nova’s Hardwood Line

Nova USA Wood Products has enhanced its premium line of Real Wood Solutions and accessories with the addition of reclaimed tropical hardwoods products. The descendants of European marine projects, all of Nova USA’s reclaimed tropical hardwoods are 100% FSC certified and available for the building of outdoor projects ranging from large construction applications to beams, posts and frames due to their superior strength and durability.

“Reclaimed tropical hardwoods have become increasingly popular among government agencies and environmentally-conscious builders, architects and homeowners looking to preserve forests, trees and existing wood supplies,” says Laurens van Kleef, Nova USA’s timbers & marine lumber program manager. “This includes giving a second chance to pre-used woods that normally would have been forgotten and left to deteriorate even though they offer the ideal building alternatives for both large and small exterior projects. For instance, our reclaimed Angelique tropical hardwoods offer the same durability as new, freshly cut supplies, while boasting a gray patina that blends beautifully with many architectural designs. As a tropical wood expert, Nova USA is happy to support every purchase with in-depth installation, care and maintenance information,” adds van Kleef.

Added to its inventory of tropical hardwoods last year, Nova now has a steady supply of reclaimed tropical hardwoods, which it sells to customers on a project-by-project basis.

Launched in 2005, Nova is dedicated to the supply of superior, high-quality hardwood products and accessories available at the most competitive prices in today’s marketplace. This includes the company’s Real Wood Solutions like its proprietary line of ExoShield Wood Stain, ExoDek® QuickClip® hidden fasteners, ExoClad® QuickClip™ Rainscreen Siding Clips and premium tropical hardwood decking and siding products.
