ORNAMENTAL FENCING

One of the most popular and strong fencing options is ornamental fencing. Thanks to the variety of options with rails, finials, and scrolls, it gives the commercial or residential customer the chance to add their own touch to the property. Combining strength with aesthetics, ornamental fencing provides security without impeding the view of landscaping and architecture.

The Rise of Ornamental Aluminum Fence

According to the professionals at Eastern Wholesale Fence, there are many questions a homeowner needs to answer when working with a fence installer. Are they looking for added security? Are they looking for aesthetics? Are they looking for privacy, or are they just trying to get something installed for the lowest price to close in their yard?

When it comes to answering the question of “What is the highest value fence for the money?” the answer often comes back to ornamental aluminum.

Ornamental aluminum fencing is a picket style fence that was created to match the look of traditional wrought iron or steel fencing without the added cost or shipping weight. Ornamental aluminum has fast become one of the most sought-after types of fencing in the entire industry. It’s simple to install, lightweight, looks great, easy to maintain, corrosion resistant, easy to repair, comes in multiple colors, and almost immediately adds to a home’s resale value.

“A properly installed ornamental fence can offer a surprising amount of value to a home while offering an even better value than many other fences,” says Eastern Wholesale Fence’s Chief Revenue Officer Chris DeLuso. “Many people also see them as an attractive alternative to chain-link fencing. They are commonly used as a pool enclosure and in residential backyard applications to allow the beauty of the surrounding landscape to show through”

Eastern Wholesale Fence had seen such a rise in ornamental sales of its Eastern Ornamental Aluminum brand sold in the Northeast, that they have invested in other companies that provide ornamental fence products in other areas. These companies include Coastal Aluminum Fencing made in Laurinburg, NC, and Eastern Fence - Fort Mill.

DeLuso says both companies have thriving ornamental aluminum lines that offer strong in-stock positions, short delivery times, and product options throughout the

entire eastern seaboard. This firmly places Eastern Wholesale Fence and its sister companies as one of the largest ornamental fence manufacturers and distributors in the industry.

“Eastern Ornamental Fence, Coastal Aluminum Fence, and Eastern’s Fort Mill Aluminum fence have quickly become a large part of what we sell along the east coast of the United States,” adds DeLuso. “We have seen significant growth in this market over the last few years with no signs of slowing down.”

Some similarities between Eastern Ornamental Aluminum, Coastal Aluminum and Eastern Fort Mill Aluminum include:

Rackability. The ability to “rack” or smoothly follow changes in terrain is built into every Eastern Ornamental Aluminum fence section. This ensures a clean and beautiful fence line.

Estate Gates. Estate Gates are manufactured by Eastern using square pickets welded in a U-Frame design for maximum strength and durability. Circles, finials or scrolls can be added to further enhance the beauty of these elegant entrance gates.

Special Sized Gates. Eastern Ornamental Aluminum Fence can manufacture special size openings or special heights to meet a wide variety of non-standard gate requirements.

Some differences to be aware of between the lines to help with selection include:

Eastern Ornamental Aluminum: “Hidden Screw Technology” utilizing a unique “Aluminum Feature Strip” that covers the assembly screws and locks them in place. It gives cleaner site lines because you don’t see the screw.

Coastal Aluminum: Offset screw construction and thicker guage top rail for added rackability and stability.

Eastern Fort Mill Aluminum: Double-punched for increased rackability and versatility.

“Whatever ornamental fence product you’re looking for, there’s a good chance that the full line of Eastern’s ornamental products will have you covered,” adds DeLuso.

An Innovative Solution to Protect Our Future

Ameristar Perimeter Security has been at the leading edge of ornamental fencing since the company started over 40 years ago. The Montage family line, introduced in 2005, was a revolutionary breakthrough in the ornamental fence industry. The panels are electrostatically coated inside and out and are profusion welded to provide unparalleled strength and durability.

In recent years, Ameristar noticed a need for a new kind of security in the ornamental fence world. A parent accidentally puts the car in drive instead of reverse or a driver loses control of their vehicle, crashing through a fence where innocent bystanders could be injured. These are two headlines often appearing on the evening news, but common accidents don’t have to result in tragedy.

“Our mission has always been to protect what matters most, especially our children,” says Mark Murphy, Business Development for Educational Facilities. To prevent possible tragedies, Ameristar created the Stalwart II PU30-P2 fence system, which is specifically designed for Daycare, Playground, and Preschool use, providing ornamental fence system integrated with a crashrated cable barrier

The foundation of this Stalwart II system is the Montage Plus fence panels in the Pool, Pet, Play variation which features a 3” picket airspace and a flush top and bottom rail. This configuration is safer for little hands and feet than the traditional picket spacing and rail. Next, additional rails and bollards are integrated to house the anti-ram

cables. The cable barrier system has a certified rating of ASTM PU30. It is engineered to provide impact protection from a 5000 lb. vehicle traveling at 30 MPH.

“The Stalwart II fence and barrier system will effectively stop a vehicle from crashing into day care grounds,” says Murphy.

The light ornamental design of the pickets adds a decorative touch to the exterior building while the rails hold the passive cable barrier system. These features make Stalwart II the preferred choice for playgrounds and early childhood education centers.

Centurion Ornamental: Hand-Crafted for Beauty and Security

Ornamental steel fences are the most popular and commonly installed decorative fences in the United States. They are ideal for pools, backyards, businesses, government, transportation, educational facilities and much more.

The Centurion line of ornamental fence from Stephens Pipe and Steel was founded many years ago as Harbor Town Fence in Grand Haven, Michigan. By 2002, it had changed hands several times. This is when Stephens Pipe and Steel acquired the brand and made it their exclusive line of ornamental fence. Over the years they constantly improved the process and materials to realize the product we have today. “We are in the process of building a new facility to increase the capacity and quality of all Centurion products, right here in Kentucky. We expect great things for our efforts,” says General Manager Ted Eysenbach. The Centurion line meets a variety of fencing needs, from architectural and landscaping enhancement to security and safety. “Nothing defines a space with such grace and proportion as our exclusive brand of Centurion Ornamental Steel Fence,” says Kyle Holland with Stephens. “This line is a great example of American craftsmanship, with the main components manufactured at our tube mill in Kentucky.”

With a wide variety of sizes and styles, Holland explains there is a Centurion fence to meet the specifications of any project. He highlights specific features this ornamental fencing line provides:

Three Levels of Protection Centurion is offered in three distinct gauges and weights to meet nearly any fencing requirement.

CENTURION I - This outstanding value is the answer to homeowners, business owners and developers seeking enhanced security and a great aesthetic. It’s recommended for apartment developments, swimming pool enclosures, gardens, commercial projects and residences where industrial strength fencing is neither appropriate nor budgeted. Ornamental posts, rails and pickets are constructed from welded high-strength tubular galvanized steel.

CENTURION II - Centurion II offers a step up in the level of security by using a heavier framework and pickets, filling the void between residential and heavy industrial. It is ideal for commercial and light industrial projects.

CENTURION III & IV – This is the ultimate ornamental fencing option, featuring the heaviest gauge steel and using the most robust framework in the market. It’s the preferred,

heavy-duty choice for industrial, military, prison and any project where both high security and aesthetics are important.

Thermally-Bonded DuraLast™ Finish

Each Centurion component is formed from highquality carbon steel, which is subjected to hotdipped galvanized coating for corrosion resistance. A layer of phosphate prepares the galvanized steel for the DuraLast finish, which is applied electrostatically and thermally bonded after fabrication, providing a long-lasing, high-gloss finish that also ensures that all welds and joints are fully protected against corrosion. The result is a fence that requires no maintenance and carries a 12-year warranty.

Ornamental U-Channel Systems

Centurion U-Channel is fabricated in several distinct combinations of gauges and strength to meet the needs of residential, commercial and institutional installations. Each panel style is rackable, making it adaptable for even the most challenging projects. Different panel styles are

available, with each rail and picket individually poly-coated and hand-built. Rivets are inserted into the pre-punched holes in the rails and pickets and align perfectly for a true fit.

Picket-Style Options

Centurion pickets are stamped spear, flat-top or through rail. Flat post caps are also standard. To enhance the appearance of any Centurion installation, a wide variety decorative add-on options are available.

Holland adds, “Our Centurion line provides strength, beauty and versatility for any type of ornamental fence project in any setting,” says Holland. “We’re very proud of this system and all it offers, as a product manufactures by the largest American owned fence manufacturer and distributer.”

Securing What Matters Most with Fortress®

V2 ASSURANCE

Located on the Northeast outskirts of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is the budding community of Rockwall, Texas. Known as a great place to raise a family because of its suburban hometown feel, Rockwall is home to the Kiddie Academy Education Child Care Center.

Through the back doors of the Rockwall Kiddie Academy, children, parents and caregivers find a playground decked out with climbing walls, slides and welcome sunshades to shield youngsters from the intense Texas sun. However, upon closer examination, one could clearly see that the playground’s surrounding chain-link fence was well past its prime.

To protect children in their care and offer parents peace of mind, Rockwall Kiddie Academy owners consulted American Fence of Dallas. The local fencing contractor was tasked with sourcing a high-performance, high-value fencing replacement to enclose the open-air playground.

To meet this challenge, American Fence of Dallas opted for V2 ASSURANCE commercial ornamental fencing from Fortress Building Products. This smart perimeter solution yields a 3-inch air space between pickets, which offers increased safety in areas where kids play. Coupled with its enhanced durability and modern aesthetic, these fencing panels are well-suited for securing commercial

properties such as the Kiddie Academy.

“One of the chief reasons the project team opted for V2 ASSURANCE is because of its 3-inch air space,” explains Dan Madden, Business Development Manager, High Security, Fortress Building Products. “A narrow air space improves system security, preventing small humans from gaining access into or out of the play area. Pretty impressively, this engineering not only meets national code requirement, but exceeds it.”

He adds that just as important, the 3-inch air space also ensures adult visitors cannot reach hands or limbs through the fence. “What’s more, the constricted air space pairs nicely with the system’s sleek aesthetic without hindering visibility beyond the fence line. Academy instructors can feel protected while still seeing clearly through to the other side of the perimeter.”

Madden says this is case where improved security meets best-in-class aesthetics. To not compromise appearance for system security, the fencing solution incorporates a flat top and flat

bottom profile for a handsome, contemporary look. No picket-to-rail connection points add to its sleek appearance. Installed around the perimeter of the Rockwall Kiddie Academy playground, V2 ASSURANCE certainly offers a positive first impression of the early learning center.

Upon installation of the fence panels, the project’s general contractor opted for the addition of safety bollards. Compatible with V2 ASSURANCE commercial ornamental fencing, safety bollards are often used to protect people and property from accidental damage caused by vehicles. To implement this added safety measure, crews positioned basic steel bollards between the newly installed fencing solution and the academy’s highly trafficked parking lot. The posts were cemented in the ground at 48 inches apart.

In addition to providing added protection in the instance a stray vehicle jumps the curb, layering the bollards in front of V2 ASSURANCE proved to be a cost-effective, viable alternative to its more expensive crash-rated designation counterpart.

Railing as Strong as it is Beautiful

SwedgeLock Aluminum Fence and Railing was the first patented no-screw aluminum system introduced to the market in the early 90s. The company’s original focus was supplying commercial balcony railing for the high-rise market in South Florida, but by 2002, SwedgeLock had evolved into a global supplier offering a full line of fence and rail products with over 600 dealers worldwide. Over the past decade, the company has concentrated mostly on multi-family business needs, offering over a dozen different styles of balcony railings.

The company uses a proprietary swedge locking process that eliminates screws, brackets, and the instability that comes with them. The original creator of the SwedgeLock system was Vern Haglund. Haglund had already made a name in the curtain wall industry, but he could see the huge demand for a non-welded aluminum railing product. Unfortunately, Haglund was killed in a private plane crash in 2002 and SwedgeLock was sold to APG Meridian. The economic turndown of 2008 forced APG to shut down its operation. In 2010, Ron Allen, purchased the assets. Allen had been a SwedgeLock dealer since 1995 and already knew the product very well. His extensive background in the installation of both fence and railing products led to a redesign of the entire product line, focusing on ease of installation and overall quality. SwedgeLock is now located in a 60,000 square-foot building in Greenville, South Carolina.

“SwedgeLock is continually improving and innovating our operation,” says Allen. “We are committed to creating quality custom aluminum fence and railing products with the highest standards of integrity and craftsmanship. Every SwedgeLock product is built to provide years of maintenance-free service - and look good doing it!”

He says SwedgeLock recently introduced a noscrew residential fence product built exclusively by the company’s patented automated panel assembly machine, The Swedgemaster 2000. This fully automated workhorse, with one operator, can build up to 150 no-screw fence panels in a single shift. Its capabilities boast a product line including 105 different styles of fence from 36-inch to 72inch in height, and only requires minutes to switch between the setups.

“We have recently aligned ourselves to sell and license the Swedgemaster 2000 and our SwedgeLock product line to manufacturers, distributors, and independent fence companies all over the world,” says Allen. “Overcoming the challenge of hiring competent, long-term employees is continually getting harder and automation in the fence industry is the only way to stay relevant and competitive in the future.”

Another new product on the horizon for SwedgeLock is the 2023 debut of a new railing in a box that can be marketed on the internet as well as to wholesalers and retailers all over the world. The system includes a uniquely efficient patented locking system that allows rail panels to be level or rackable for stairs and ramps. “We are really excited about this launch,” says Allen. “This new system is sure to make an impression in the market as a quality, low-cost alternative to what is currently available.”

The project consisted of approximately 2400 linear feet of 6x8-foot Aberdeen 3 Rail Ornamental steel fence around the new synthetic turf field donated by the school alumni.

Tru Line Fence is located in Levittown, Pennsylvania, and has been in business since 1981. Over the past 41 years, the company has developed a reputation for providing quality fencing products and installation services to the Pennsylvania tri-state area.

“I would like to thank Pat Ragan, owner of Tru Line Fence Company, and his team for choosing Iron World Manufacturing as his trusted vendor on this project. We were extremely grateful for the opportunity to work on this job,” said Richard Stellabuto, president and CEO of Iron World. “I also want to give special thanks to our account manager, Kim Ragan, who was involved with the entire process of this job. We thoroughly enjoyed working on this project and look forward to more collaborative projects together with Pat and his team.”

Phase 2 of the project is in currently underway to install an additional 560 feet of fencing around the football and softball fields. Tru Line is merging with Apex Services of Croydon, Pennsylvania, on the installation.

Iron World has a long history of successful partnerships with respected companies in the fencing industry. The specialists at Iron World headquarters in Maryland have the expertise to discuss projects for any part of the country. Iron World’s sales and design team can evaluate and accommodate any ornamental project for residential, commercial, and industrial, including steel and aluminum slide gates in both ornamental and chain link, as well as custom work with custom colors required for any project.

CASE STUDY:

Ohio Fence Project Helps Bring a Community Together

When representatives of Jackson Township, just outside of Canton, Ohio, needed someone to install ornamental fence and screening around their new municipal amphitheater, they certainly had a contractor in mind, and they didn’t have to look far. Located just 10 minutes south of the project is an almost 50 yearold, family-owned fence company. “Southway Fence has done several projects in our community,” said Michael Danner, the Park Superintendent for the Township. “In fact, several members of their management team are local residents and have been aware of the project since before we broke ground.”

The obvious goal for the project was to come as close as possible to the vision of the design firm, SoL Harris/Day Architecture, while keeping within budget during times of rising prices and supply chain issues.

Southway’s co-owner, Pete Williams Sr. contacted his supplier, Ultra Aluminum Manufacturing, and went about the process of pricing out what would turn out to be a very unique job. “I worked with Ultra’s Technical Sales Representative, Chad Agacinski, to put together bid numbers. We do hundreds of ornamental aluminum jobs per year, so that part was simple, however what set the project apart was the louvered privacy fence that would surround the entire seating and gathering spaces of the complex. We didn’t have experience with Ultra’s louvered product, so Chad helped to do some value-engineering before submittals and ultimately, we were fortunate enough to be awarded the project.”

Ultra Eclipse Air™ is a heavy-duty horizontal louvered screening that provides both privacy and air flow. Panels are custom-made and fully welded for easy installation and are available in four

textured powder coat colors.

Installation began in the middle of winter, as did the challenges. With Southway’s veteran crews, weather wasn’t the issue, but rather the discovery of private utilities not marked by 811 services. This meant there would be constant adjustments to the fence line, as well as a requirement to adjust sizes on the custom louvered panels throughout the manufacturing process. “Fortunately for us, Pete clearly communicated his needs and gave us plenty of time to make adjustments,” said Agacinski. “Despite the changes, the project went very smoothly from our perspective, and we credit our customer for that”

Unlike typical ornamental fence using a “progressive” install, Eclipse Air posts are set first, then panels are screwed onto posts using heavyduty, stainless Tek screws. The project included everything from elevation changes requiring “stepping” of the louvered panels, to a radiused section and multiple gates. ”Once we dealt with the issues underground, the actual installation of the panels was very simple and went off without a hitch,” said Williams. “This facility is a gathering place for our entire community and I’m proud that

we played a big part in its construction”

The project also included several hundred feet of Ultra’s UAF200 commercial grade ornamental fence along the roadway in the front of the building. Both products were finished in a satintextured bronze powder coat.

“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing the folks from Southway Fence for a very long time,” said Ben Jodoin with Ultra Aluminum Manufacturing. “In fact, they’re one of our oldest customers and it’s strong partnerships like theirs that help make us successful. We’ve done many great projects with them over the years, but this one is special since it’s really the centerpiece of the community. It’s a job we’re particularly proud of and we’re thrilled that our friends at Southway invited us to be a part of it!”

Start-Up Stories

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.

Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.

Founded in 1956 by Ray Statz, Qual Line Fence in Waunakee, Wisconsin, came about thanks to a series of seemingly unrelated events when one-step-leadsto-another.

“My mom and dad had 12 boys and two girls. We lived on a small farm so dad hired us boys out, usually by the month,” explains Statz. “Over time, we worked on bigger farms that were owned by bankers or corporation presidents, who might have a hard time talking directly to the farmers, so they would have John Craig of Wisconsin Farm Management as the go-between.”

Upon discharge from the U.S. Army in the Korean War, the farm service wanted Statz to return to work on the farms. He declined, but they asked if he could build fences on some of the farms.

“So, John Craig and I went to the University of Wisconsin Agriculture School and learned all that was written about farm fence, which was not much. I think I have written more about it since that time,” he says.

He started the company by himself; eventually hiring another employee to help handle the workload. Today, he has 12 employees and an annual sales volume of between two and three million.

“In the beginning days of the company, we offered farm fence only. Through the years, we’ve added many products. We manufacture aluminum flagpoles, and we make roll top fence from 6-gage welded wire, and we manufacture drive anchor brackets for all sizes of posts,” Statz explains. “All of our wood fences have steel posts including the split rail fence.”

Qual Line Fence uses the drive anchor method for hanging gate leaves. Each post is driven 5’ deep and then has 3 anchors which are 8’ long, driven at 45 degrees. All underground, like the roots on a tree. “This holds as well as concrete and is strong immediately and makes no mess. No clean up and the team is back to the shop by noon. We also use this method for setting hundreds of tennis net posts over

Quanergy Announces World’s First 2D

360° PoE LiDAR Sensor

IoT sensor reduces cost, increases detection accuracy for physical security and industrial uses.

Quanergy Systems, Inc., a leading provider of LiDAR sensors and smart 3D solutions, has announced the M1 Edge PoE LiDAR sensor, building on the company’s M1 Edge™ solution. This new IoT sensor expands Quanergy’s presence in the security Perimeter Intrusion Detection (PID) market, by providing higher detection accuracy at a lower price than competing LiDAR solutions. In addition, this sensor increases the number of industrial use cases that LiDAR can address.

Quanergy’s M1 Edge LiDAR sensors enable smart awareness for applications that require simple object detection and alerting capabilities. The M1 Edge PoE is ideal for any environment where threats can come from small objects or in hard-to-reach places. Such use cases include: Monitoring rooftops and indoor spaces for potential intruders

Increasing data rack and cabinet security

at data centers by detecting unauthorized access

Creating a virtual fence around perimeter lines for commercial security applications to detect anomalous behavior and potentially dangerous objects being thrown over the fence

Protection of critical infrastructure such as data centers, transportation hubs, oil and gas facilities, transformer substations and telecommunication facilities

Perimeter Detection, Zone Protection and Anti Climb Prevention Detecting objects dropped by drones near prisons or other high security infrastructure facilities

The M1 Edge PoE’s industry-leading angular resolution allows it to detect objects as small as a ball or even a pen, with a high degree of accuracy up to tens of meters away from the sensor.

When coupled with Quanergy’s MQ-8™ and Qortex DTC™ products, it provides the most complete LiDAR-based security solution in the industry.

This new solution also expands Quanergy’s industrial use cases. The M1 Edge PoE can automate timeconsuming and

error-prone bin-picking applications and reduce accidents in Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS). It allows for Power over Ethernet (PoE), simplified wiring for a lower installation cost, up to 16 evaluation fields and a higher number (up to 128) of configurable detection zones per evaluation field. It also integrates with QORTEX Aware™ perception software, enabling customers to create detection zones to monitor and flag any anomalies back to the main system.

“We’re enabling smarter awareness for applications requiring simple object detection and alerting capabilities,” said Gerald Becker, vice president of market development and alliances, Quanergy. “The new M1 Edge PoE features provide increased coverage and more flexibility – and enable us to deliver new security solutions such as security zone detection for perimeter protection, fence line detection, and rooftop surveillance applications.”

Tony Rigoni, director of industrial markets, Quanergy, added, “By increasing the number of detection zones per field from three to 128, we can enable many more applications - many of which were previously unsolvable. The M1 Edge PoE is easy and quick to set up, enabling customers to rapidly collect and make use of LiDAR data.”

Bill Peterson PRESIDENT, RICHARD’S FENCE

Bill Peterson’s father, Richard, founded Richard’s Fence in 1968, installing fence for Montgomery Wards and Sears. Bill grew up in the industry, working for his father at a young age and learning the intangible qualities that come with it such as dependability, honesty, integrity, and the value of a good reputation. He was named vice president in 1990.

Located in Akron, Ohio, the company currently has 35 employees. Bill’s brother, Eric, is the vice president and runs the manufacturing operations. The family legacy continues with Bill’s son, Drew, and daughter, Jacqui, working in the business. Read on to learn how they balance it all.

YOU WORKED FOR YOUR FATHER’S COMPANY SINCE AGE 12. WHAT DID YOU LEARN IN YOUR TEEN YEARS WORKING THERE?

Work became a habit, and it was something that you just did. I would compare it to families that grew up on farms and had chores that were expected to be done. My dad taught me to drive a stick shift truck at age 13. I would move the delivery truck around the yard, after hours, to help him load the truck for tomorrow’s deliveries. At that time, the fence company was next to our house, so it was always a part of our lives.

School was important so I did not work during that time, but my standing summer job was at the fence company; even so, we always

had plenty of time to have fun. I spent many summers riding go-carts or minibikes that my dad built. He was always building something, sometimes a pipe coater, sometimes a go-cart.

LATER, DURING COLLEGE, YOU INSTALLED FENCES. WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING THAT TIME?

problems or challenges we might experience. In fact, my dad started in the fence industry much the same way, when a friend of his asked him to help install fence part-time for Sears and Montgomery Ward.

Those college years taught me how all the parts form a fence structure and to appreciate the challenges the installers face each day. Everything from tough digging, tough customers, and their angry dogs.

I also learned that nothing is more frustrating than driving an hour to a job only to find that the distributor gave you the wrong parts and you are unable to finish the job. I stress to our shipping department that sending the right parts is very important, and if something doesn’t look correct, don’t be afraid to ask the customer.

Installing fence was an invaluable experience for learning that part of the fence industry. Since my college class schedule was too erratic to work at the fence company, I convinced a friend that we could make good money installing fence. My dad had taught me the basics and always had great advice for

My favorite installation story is when we were asked by another company to replace a double drive gate at the National Guard Armory in Canton, Ohio. It was a rush job that had to be installed on a Saturday so a desperate installation company asked a couple of college kids if we could do it. We showed up to the Armory on time with the new gates, but the skeptical sergeant couldn’t find the key to open the damaged gate.

“Good thing we are not at war,” I said under my breath. The sergeant was shocked by

Dick Peterson, founder of Richard’s Fence, installing a wood fence in front of his company in 1978. 36 OCTOBER 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA Dick’s sons, Bill and Eric Peterson, acquiring fencing skills in 1978.

how easily we opened the gate by taking off the hinges and dropping the gate! We had the new ones up in thirty minutes. That sergeant was impressed by how we solved the problem.

DID YOU ALWAYS ENVISION YOURSELF WORKING AT RICHARD’S FENCE, OR DID YOU HAVE OTHER ASPIRATIONS?

Although I did some different jobs when I was younger (busboy, farming, installer), I always felt that I was to work in our family business.

WHAT COLLEGE DID YOU ATTEND?

I graduated from the University of Akron with a Bachelor of Science in both marketing and management. I also take continuing executive education courses with the Weatherhead School of Business at Case Western Reserve. I think it is important to keep learning and challenge yourself. It can be easy to fall into a rut and keep doing the same things without improvement.

YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THE LOCAL AND NATIONAL AMERICAN FENCE ASSOCIATION IS REMARKABLE. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME INVOLVED AND WHAT KEEPS YOU ACTIVE THERE?

Dick Peterson, my father, along with Tom Polen, Dave Richards, Mike Kalinich, Sr., and Mike Goldstein started the Northern Ohio chapter of the AFA back in the late 70’s/early 80’s. When I graduated college in 1987, my father told me I need to attend the meetings. Four meetings later, they made me president of the chapter, mainly because I would show up and they were tired of passing the position back and forth.

During those years, the local chapters were more active. We would have eight meetings in addition to the golf outing, a table-top show, and usually a Christmas party. After about four years as president of the local chapter, I was appointed as a director of the national AFA by Michael Kalinich, who was president of the national AFA at that time. I ended up serving a second term as director and was able to serve on the AFA Show Committee for three shows in the 90’s. I continue to attend local chapter events.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITH THE TECHNICAL SUPPORT TEAM OF THE CHAIN LINK FENCE MANUFACTURERS INSTITUTE?

My father joined the CLFMI in 1989 and attended the meetings. About 12 years ago, I became the company representative and took over for my father and quickly joined the technical support team.

I learned a lot from the people on that committee (Bill Ullrich, Tom Stanek, Chuck Naegele, Steve Peters, and many others). I was honored to eventually be appointed chairman of the committee for four years. I am currently the secretary/treasurer of the CLFMI and I still serve as a member of the technical support team.

YOUR BROTHER, ERIC, IS THE VICE PRESIDENT AND RUNS THE MANUFACTURING OPERATIOS. HE AND YOUR FATHER HAVE DEVELOPED NEW AND MORE EFFICIENT WAYS OF PRODUCING WIRE AND FENCE FABRIC. HOW DO THEY COLLABORATE?

My dad and brother designed and built our strand wire coating line, our fence weaving machines, our minimesh weaving machines, pipe coating line, and our fitting coating line. They both have the gift of looking at a machine process and making it more efficient and increasing its production. They can also fix just about anything. They are passing this information down to my

son, Drew, who is comfortable with the new technologies that are changing rapidly. I am involved with the business side and ensure we are efficient in all areas of operation.

WHAT SETS RICHARD’S FENCE APART FROM OTHER FENCING MANUFACTURING COMPANIES?

Thanks to the ingenuity of my brother and my father, we’re always creating new products. We’re very hands on, as a lot of true family businesses are. My father has officially retired, but still comes in everyday, but with Eric, and my son, Drew, and my daughter, Jacqui, and myself working and caring about the business, we’re confident in our future. We also have a very talented staff that we feel are extended family. People can tell if you care about them, and then they tend to care about doing a good job.

WHAT ADVICE HAVE YOU RECEIVED THAT MADE AN IMPACT ON YOU?

My father has and continues to give great advice. He impressed on me that a manager needs to be present and involved with what is really going on in the company. He would tell me to not be complacent and to strive to make things better. He would also say, “Don’t sell too cheap!” which was his way of telling me to always keep an eye on the margins. Sales do not mean a thing without profits to keep everything running.

HOW DO YOU ENVISION THE FUTURE OF THE COMPANY IN 10 TO 15 YEARS?

I feel we are very solid as a business. My father is a unique person who was very good at both the management and operations part and the manufacturing part and built a successful business with a lot of hard work. My brother and I tend to gravitate to our strong suits: Eric with manufacturing operations and myself with the business operation. We work well together. Our third generation, Jacqui and Drew, are very capable and are learning all parts of the business. They have the skills to take the company into the future.

The Richard’s Fence team at their 50th anniversary in 2018.

This offering will be the first of its kind to provide a carbon neutral profile from production to final delivery at the job-site, covering emissions on a scope 1, 2 and 3 basis. In conjunction with the launch of RebarZero™, CMC is also introducing net-zero steel across its entire mill product portfolio, including merchant bar, wire rod, and fence posts.

“Sustainability has been at the core of our Company since its founding as a single metals recycling yard over a century ago,” said Barbara Smith, Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer. “The introduction of CMC’s net-zero offering carries that proud legacy forward and ensures we remain at the forefront of our industry by providing customers with one of the lowest emissions steel products in the marketplace. RebarZero™ was developed to put our customers’ projects at the leading edge of sustainable construction. Today’s product launch further strengthens CMC’s ability to provide innovative solutions for the construction and industrials markets across a wide breadth of end use applications.”

CMC believes it operates one of the most efficient fleets of steel mills in the world and is a long-time leader in environmentally friendly and sustainable steelmaking. All of CMC’s steel products are made using recycled scrap in cost efficient electric arc furnaces. On a per ton basis, the greenhouse gas emissions, energy intensity, and water usage of CMC’s mills are just a fraction of the domestic and global industry average.

Zekelman Industries Nears Completion of the Most Technically Advanced Galvanized Tube Manufacturing Facility in North America

Zekelman Industries has announced it is nearing completion of its newest state-of-the-art facility constructed to produce a wide range of galvanized tubular products for the electrical, fence, solar tracker and solar foundation markets. It is located just west of Chicago in Rochelle, Illinois, a city known as the “Hub City,” with great access to rail and major interstate routes. This facility is the company’s 18th factory. It has 1 million square feet under roof, including four in-line galvanizing tube mills with capacity to exceed 300,000 tons annually and an automated hot-dip galvanizing line capable of production in excess of 100,000 tons annually. The facility will support Wheatland Tube, Western Tube and Picoma customers.

This facility utilizes cutting-edge technology for both in-line and hot-dip galvanizing operations. Barry Zekelman, chairman and CEO, said, “Our engineering efforts on the front end were focused on the goal to build a world-class facility that sets the standard for safety, quality and productivity, while ensuring sustainable manufacturing practices.” When fully operational, these mills will be the fastest in the world, feeding directly into the factory’s automated warehouse to deliver the highest quality products and solutions to customers.

Tom Muth, executive vice president and COO of the tube and pipe division, said, “While initial production has already started on two of the high-speed in-line galvanization mills, we will be working through the end of this year to complete installation and commissioning. We couldn’t be prouder of our dedicated team and network of contractors who are making this happen, along with the support we have received from the City of Rochelle.”

Full operations are set to commence in January of 2023. The company is currently hiring, with plans to add another 150 employees by December 2022.

Zekelman Industries includes the operating divisions of Atlas Tube, Picoma, Sharon Tube, Wheatland Tube, Western Tube and Z Modular.

Most entrepreneurial businesses go through ups and downs over the years. “There was a rough time in the 1970s when I had to take money out of my house to subsidize the business,” Statz reflects. Since that was over 50 years ago, it’s safe to say the business is on solid ground today.

Statz’ approach to business success revolves around two things: knowing the competition and knowing the customer. “By focusing on those, a business can remain competitive while supplying what the customer is wanting to buy. That’s been our recipe for success,” he says. “Almost everyone knows that we are the best and they are willing to pay for quality.”

“My son, Al, and I are 50/50 partners. I know the business is in capable hands and our future is bright,” Statz says.

Reality Check

“Get into politics or get out of business!” is a registered trademark of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), one of the largest construction associations in the United States. I did not realize that slogan had been registered. Many years ago, I worked on the staff of the ABC when it first started using that slogan. I thought it was kind of catchy as a person, and as a citizen, but it did not mean much to me from a business perspective because I was new to both the construction industry and to politics.

Times have changed. I’ve had my own business for more than 30 years now, in addition to being actively involved in the association business through the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute (CLFMI) and other affiliations. It’s a lot easier now to see the direct relationship between what goes on at the federal, state, and local levels in government and the ability for the private sector (such as those of us in the fence industry) to provide good jobs, to supply products and services that make people’s lives better, easier, and safer, and to make a profit.

The U.S. midterm elections are coming up in November, and there is more uncertainty right now about the outcome of those elections than there has been in many years. That uncertainty makes it extremely hard to predict what the shortterm future holds for the U.S. economy, much less the long term. These past two years have shown us how fast things can change, so it will be interesting, to say the least.

So, what is the fence industry’s interest in these elections? Neither of the two major fence industry associations, AFA and CLFMI, are active lobbying organizations. AFA is primarily an educational organization, CLFMI is primarily a technical and market development organization. Both organizations monitor important national legislation, but neither is actively supporting candidates or specific ballot issues.

Here is the point of all of this: there should be a BIG interest in these midterms by the fence industry. Just because there is no presidential election does not mean that these elections will not impact the fence industry, but it really depends on individual people and companies to “represent” the industry’s interests during these elections. Do not go into the voting booth (or read a mail-in ballot) and just vote straight down a party line unless you know the candidates and their

positions. Do not look at candidates for offices such as judges, or school boards, or local offices and not recognize a single name yet vote for some of them anyway. There ARE people and issues on those ballots whose votes and actions can impact your business.

Here are some things all of us should be doing between now and November 8:

1) Learn about the issues. What state and local issues are being discussed with an impact on your family, community, and business. Is there a zoning issue that will limit residential or commercial construction? Is there an environmental issue that will require changes to your facility or jobsites? Is there a ballot issue that will raise personal or business taxes?

2) Learn about the candidates. The primary season is over, and the candidates are all identified. Get to know each of these people, and what their position is on issues that are important to you and your fence industry business. If you are not sure where candidates stand, contact their offices and/or their websites.

3) With all members of the House and onethird of the Senators up for re- election, control of both houses of Congress are up in the air. Do not believe all the media ads you hear and see. If you see an ad that says “so-and-so will raise taxes on every business in the state”, check out the information on websites and via candidates’ offices.

4) Encourage all your employees and their families to be prepared voters, too. Here is an example of why that is important to the industry.

Recently, CLFMI was asked to lend its specific technical knowledge to a land use issue in Ohio. When submitting its input, CLFMI was also asked to justify its standing (credibility) before the governing body. CLFMI surveyed its members and determined how many employees CLFMI member companies represented in Ohio. CLFMI also contacted AFA to find out approximately how many fence contractors there were in Ohio, and the average number of employees per company they represented. The numbers were impressive because they represented potential voters, something public officials take very seriously. Our job is to help make sure those potential voters are informed voters, too.

When the midterm elections are over, do not think of them as a prediction of the next presidential election. There have been several instances in recent elections where the incumbent president’s party was beaten in the midterms, but the president was re-elected handily two years later (i.e. Obama and Clinton). A lot can happen in the next two years to determine the presidential election.

Don’t wait until the next election to get actively engaged in important political discussions and decisions. Be an informed voter and help your employees and their families be the same.

“Get into politics or get out of business” isn’t just a slogan anymore. It’s a reality.

Profit With Versatility Ways To Accessorize Earth Drills For New Applications

The Swiss Army was on to something in the late 1800s when they had a manufacturer design a knife capable of opening canned food and disassembling the army’s service rifles. Loaded with a blade, reamer, can opener and screwdriver, the knife became a worldwide symbol for versatility.

Fencing contractors should think of their earth drill as the next Swiss Army knife, according to Joe Haynes, Little Beaver president. “With the right accessories, earth drills break into new applications, such as horizontal boring and anchoring, expanding your range of capabilities” He suggests these considering the following earth drill accessories to expand business and increase profits:

Bore Horizontally, Profit Vertically. Turn the familiar “drill down” mantra sideways with horizontal boring. Horizontal boring attachments allow contractors to complete a variety of jobs, including conduit, pipe, cable and irrigation installments.

Typically, a manufacturer offers two types of kits: one for dry drilling and one for wet drilling. A dry auger kit bores to lengths of five feet and is best suited for smaller projects, such as boring under sidewalks. Larger projects, like boring under streets or driveways, require the use of wet drilling kits, which bore as far as 50 feet. Wet drilling involves connecting a water hose and water swivel to the drill bit to flush out the borehole.

If a contractor already owns a mechanical earth drill, these kits are a cost-effective addition. When it comes to ROI, reduced labor costs make the initial equipment investment worth every penny. For example, a wet drilling kit takes less than 30 minutes to drill under a 30-foot driveway while manually using a sledgehammer to force the pipe

through the ground may take hours. Time is even saved on smaller projects, as dry auger kits bore four feet in less than a minute.

Do More Than Drill Holes. Get creative with a hydraulic earth drill and consider using it for anchoring projects. Some manufacturers offer a variety of attachments for mobile home, utility or even tent anchoring.

Mobile home anchors make securing mobile homes fast and easy. While traditional methods involve using an expensive and slow pipe thread machine, an earth drill with an anchoring attachment takes several hours off the project. Some manufacturers’ earth drills install each anchor in less than a couple of minutes and can complete an entire home in as little as 90 minutes.

Installing utility anchors is also faster with an earth drill. For example, an earth drill installs each anchor in a power utility tower anchoring system in about a minute. Only one person is required for the job, which cuts labor costs.

Often, outdoor celebrations involve renting large tents to shelter guests. Setting up these tents has the potential to become a lucrative business opportunity for fencing contractors. For these projects, consider purchasing an attachment to anchor the tents. This expands a contractor’s service offerings and cuts back on costs associated with manual labor. These types of attachments pair with hydraulic earth drills and drive tent anchors in and out of the ground within seconds as opposed to manually hammering in tent stakes.

“Sure, it may not fit in a pocket,” says Haynes, “but given the right accessories an earth drill can be just as versatile as a Swiss Army

knife. Even a small investment in a couple of accessories expands a contractor’s service offerings. Keep this in mind when looking for new ways to maximize an earth drill’s profit potential.”

Little Beaver has been proudly manufacturing quality, safe and productive drilling equipment for three generations. Contact sales@littlebeaver. com or visit www.littlebeaver.com.

AVOID COMMON INVESTMENT MISTAKES

Investing can be a complicated business. Once you’re invested, you become vulnerable not only to the volatility of the market, but to the whims of your own financial strategy. Even when you have a financial advisor, which is wise for virtually anyone considering an investment, your advisor is only able to work with the information you provide. It’s not uncommon for people to implement what they’ve heard recommended as a “can’t miss” financial strategy with dreams of hitting stock market gold, but when it comes to investing, an honest and mapped-out strategy is integral to any plan.

One of the easiest ways to get off on the wrong foot is to over or underestimate your risk tolerance. The highest returns are often found in the riskier investments, and because we all want to get the most bang for our buck, it can be tempting to put our money toward the investment that has the biggest pay-off. If you have a low risk tolerance, however, putting your hard-earned money into a high-risk investment may not be the best approach,

there are investment options available for every risk level. When you enter into an investment strategy, you have to be honest about how much risk you can handle, what your goals are and how you can realistically reach those goals.

Another common mistake people make, is investing in things you don’t understand, based on just a tip from a friend or relative, or from something on the news about a certain investment. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with exploring investment options, or getting more information about a hot stock, but it’s best to put your money toward a business you understand. Some businesses and industry are highly regulated and complex, which can get confusing for stockholders.

Perhaps the most common -- and in some cases, the costliest –

mistake people make is waiting too long or for the right time to invest. To truly profit from the world of investing, it’s best to start as early as possible. There are many, many benefits to starting early, the most obvious being that you have a longer period of time to earn money.

Another great benefit of investing at an early age, is that you can afford to take more chances. You can make the decision to put money in more aggressive investments, because unlike an investor who is 50 or 60, you have time to recover from any losses you may incur. It’s certainly never too late to invest, but don’t make the mistake of putting it off longer than you should just because you don’t feel like you are old enough or wise enough to get started.

If you are new to investing, it’s best to consult with a trusted financial advisor if you’re not sure of the best path to take. Financial planning isn’t just about looking at numbers and interest rates. Sometimes people want to do what feels right for them, their situation and most importantly, their life goals. Everyone is different. A good financial advisor understands that and will work with you to maximize your investment within guidelines you outline.

LISTENING AND COMMUNICATING

There is no such thing as too much communication. Work and personal stressors keep us busy and it’s easy for things to get lost in the shuffle. Even though life moves at an alarming pace, it’s important to slow down when information is being shared to help lower the chances of any misunderstandings. There are things you do to improve you listening and direct communication skills.

BECOME A BETTER LISTENER BY DEVELOPING THESE SKILLS:

Focus. Even when your intention is to listen closely, you may fail to do so if your undivided attention is not given to the speaker. Take a break from multitasking so you can focus on what is being said, retain the information and when needed respond with understanding.

Empathy. It’s easy to put ourselves in the shoes of someone we care about, but it’s important to extend that same empathy to everyone. Make the effort to step outside of your comfort zone and exercise kindness and compassion to improve your listening skills.

Self-Control. Wait for the other person to finish their thoughts before you jump in with your own. Even when you believe you are right or have an important thing to add, the other person will feel like you want to listen to them if you don’t interrupt what they have to say.

Inclusion. When it is your turn to speak, make it clear to the other person that you have been listening. Incorporate their perspectives and thoughts into your response. React to their narrative and arguments instead of delivering a planned speech that distracted you from listening.

TIPS FOR IMPROVING DIRECT COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Language Matters. Qualifiers and unnecessary apologies should be removed for good. Start by reviewing your emails and other messages to see where and how you could have been more direct.

Leave Your Comfort Zone. Just like anything in life, the only way to improve at something is to practice. Start by challenging yourself to speak up twice during a meeting. This provides a reasonable goal that will help you get comfortable expressing your ideas to others. You can then leverage that new skill when you have a meeting to run or are asked to make a presentation.

Advocate for Yourself. Keep track of your accomplishments, positive feedback and other convincing metrics that can help quantify all your daily hard work. Before entering a conversation with this information do your homework and practice what you want to say so you don’t leave out any of your key points.

Fence Building . . . (gasp) for Profit!

Profit is not a dirty word. All fence professionals should place more focus on profit as a short- and long-term sustainable goal. Many make the mistake of looking into the bank account and see if there is enough money to pay the bills and keep the suppliers at bay and this is not a sustainable option for most companies.

Company profitability starts with a mindset of the owner or business partners and must be part of the culture for the company, but how do we establish this mindset? First, we must determine what gross and net margins we wish to build our company on and never drop below this threshold just to get the job. With this stated, a company will have to determine minimum and maximum margins for different aspects of the operation. We might establish a different min/ max margin for residential than commercial and we should be nimble enough to change as local market changes occur and monitoring the global volatility of the market, as well.

To maximize profitability, a company must evaluate the procedures and workflow in three key areas: sales, operations, and installation. If we develop efficient procedures for these areas, we will maximize our profitability.

Efficiency equals profitability and every company can find areas of weakness or challenges that should be evaluated and acted upon. Most owners or management members know where these challenges are and usually know how to improve, but we settle for the getby method, because we are so busy letting the company run us and not running the company.

Successful and profitable companies work on the business everyday by being in control and understanding the overall goals and objectives that have been established for the company.

To create a more efficient process for these key areas, owners should build out a workflow chart for each area. A workflow placed on paper

and all steps required from start to finish allows owners and team members to evaluate the hot spots that can be modified and changed to offer a most efficient process. I call this the domino procedure and if we have a hot spot that either holds up the dominoes from falling or takes too long to continue, we need to correct immediately. If you require a workflow chart example, please contact TFCGroup and we will be happy to support you.

An open and honest discussion with your management team will help understand the challenges/weakness and the strengths of your company. With this information, a workflow evaluation can be done in each of the areas mentioned above: sales, operations, and installation.

Fence build profitability started at the company profitability level as we determined that we are going to run the company and establish our min/max margins that we expect to achieve. My opinion is that more $100 bills are burned due to the lack of operations procedures. The second area of wasted money is the inefficiency of our installation when using in-house labor force. Companies that use sub-contractors know exactly what they have contracted for and, regardless of work hours, we have an established total. The cost of goods (COG) and operations are the vital areas that must be evaluated.

With an in-house labor force, any time that a crew is not loading for a job, on the job, or returning from the job, this crew becomes overhead and must be calculated into the overhead percentages of the company.

Another area of efficiency for fence build profitability is the actual on site/on job method of installation. Production levels will vary across the country but a min/max average and footages of installation for all types of fences can

be established. The most successful in-house workforce companies place a huge emphasis on training for their crew members. When a company trains the industry best-practice methods and holds them accountable to perform these methods, a company enhances production levels on all fence builds.

A philosophy for me when I was installing was to never take a wasted step; there is always something to carry, pick-up, or take back for a more efficient installation. The same domino procedure is used here, as well; always ask yourself what the next task is and look two to three tasks ahead. Learning the best practice methods for efficient installations will maximize company profitability.

Remember, profit is not a dirty word! Let’s embrace methods to enhance our company’s profitability. This content is an excerpt from the Fenceline to Success training manual provided as the Fence Contractor Super Summits.
