WOOD FENCING ANDCOATINGS Wood fencing remains a popular choice for its natural beauty, versatility and ability to complement a wide range of properties. Advances in wood products, production processes, preservative treatments, and protective coatings are giving fence professionals more options to improve durability and enhance appearance.
Beyond the Stain PROTECTING WOOD FENCE POSTS AT THE GROUND LINE A whole-post approach helps address moisture exposure, ground-line decay and damage from landscaping equipment. A well-built wood fence is an investment, and stains and coatings play an important role in protecting it. They help defend exposed wood against moisture, ultraviolet light and weathering while still preserving the appearance of the structure. However, the area most vulnerable to decay is often the area owners can barely see, the point where each post enters the ground. The ground line creates a difficult environment for wood. Moisture can collect around the post, while oxygen remains available near the surface. Repeated wetting and drying, contact with soil and seasonal temperature changes can place ongoing stress on the wood. Even pressure-treated posts benefit from careful installation and added protection in this critical area.

NOVEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
"Stain is an important part of protecting a wood fence, but it should be viewed as one component of a broader system," says Al Martins of Fence Armor. "The exposed fence, the ground-line area and the places vulnerable to physical damage each face different conditions." That broader approach begins with selecting suitable lumber and following the treatment manufacturer’s installation instructions. The exposed portions of the fence should then receive a stain or coating appropriate for the wood species, climate and desired appearance. Proper surface preparation and application remain essential to the coating’s performance. The top of a wood post is another exposure point. A properly fitted post cap helps shield exposed end grain from rain and snow while giving the finished fence a clean, tailored appearance.
At the ground line, a physical barrier can add another layer of protection. RotGuard®, developed by Fence Armor, is a self-adhering SBS membrane designed to wrap the portion of a wood post that will meet the soil. The 16” long membrane helps separate the wood from direct ground contact in the zone where moisture exposure is concentrated. Installation conditions matter. The wood should be clean, mostly dry, 18% moisture or less, so the membrane can bond properly. The wrap should be sized to provide the recommended 3” overlap and pressed firmly into place with the provided squeegee. Protection should not end at the soil surface. String trimmers and other landscaping equipment can repeatedly strike the base of a post, damaging coatings, exposing wood and potentially cutting into the upper edge of a ground-line membrane. A steel post guard can create a durable impact barrier around this exposed area while also giving the installation a finished appearance. "Many premature problems begin with small, repeated exposures rather than one dramatic event," Martins said. "Keeping water, soil and landscaping equipment from attacking the same vulnerable area can make a meaningful difference over the life of the fence."

The most effective strategy is to consider the complete post before installation. A quality oilbased stain or coating protects the visible wood from weathering. A properly installed ground-line membrane addresses the transition into the soil. Physical guarding helps defend the post against maintenance equipment after the fence is in service. No single product replaces good material selection, drainage, installation practices or ongoing maintenance. When those fundamentals are combined with protection designed for each exposure zone, contractors and property owners can give wood fencing a stronger defense from the top of the post to the ground beneath it. CASE STUDY
A Creative Solution FOR PRE-STAINING 20-FOOT LUMBER Pre-staining lumber before installation offers fence contractors significant advantages in efficiency and finish consistency. However, some projects present challenges that go beyond applying the stain itself. That was the case when StainTrac, a manufacturer of automated wood-staining equipment based in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, was tasked with pre-staining 20-foot-long boards with smooth finish faces using a semi-transparent stain. Unlike transparent penetrating stains, semi-transparent finishes have a heavier pigment load, which can make handling marks more noticeable on freshly stained lumber. Stacking boards too soon or allowing finished surfaces to rub against one another can create uneven areas, smudges or other imperfections. The unusually long boards added another complication. At 20 feet, they required additional support and careful handling, while their smooth surfaces made protecting the appearance of the finish especially important. "The challenge wasn't just getting the stain onto the boards," says Yoshi, fabricator with StainTrac. "We had to figure out how to support and move 20-foot boards without disturbing the finish. That meant looking at everything that happened after the lumber came out of the machine."
A Custom Solution Rather than relying on conventional stacking methods, StainTrac developed a custom racking system designed specifically for the project. Yoshi fabricated a rack that supported each 20-foot board at just six small contact points, minimizing the surface area touching the freshly applied finish. After passing through the StainTrac machine, each board was transferred directly to the rack. The six contact points provided support along the length of the lumber while leaving nearly the entire stained surface untouched. The rack also kept boards separated during the initial setting period, eliminating the need to stack freshly stained surfaces against one another. Once the finish had sufficient time to set, the boards could be removed and bundled. "Sometimes the simplest adjustments make the biggest difference," explains Yoshi. "By changing how the boards were supported, we were able to protect the finish without changing the actual staining process." A Different Approach to Handling The custom rack addressed contact during the setting process, but StainTrac also needed a way for employees to physically handle the freshly stained boards without leaving noticeable marks. The solution came through an unexpected piece of equipment: Perma-Rough chip work gloves with raised PVC chips, commonly used in oil, gas and chemicalhandling applications. Unlike gloves with flat palms and fingers, the raised PVC chips created numerous small contact points between the glove and the stained wood. This helped reduce visible fingerprints, palm marks and smearing during handling. The textured surface continued to provide an advantage even as the gloves became wet with stain during production. "We realized that the same principle we used for the rack could apply to the gloves," says Yoshi. "Instead of having a large surface pressing against the finish, we were minimizing contact wherever possible." The gloves also offered potential benefits beyond the initial staining process. Because semi-transparent finishes can remain vulnerable to handling marks during subsequent movement, loading, unloading and installation, the textured gloves may help protect the appearance of finished material throughout the process. They may also be useful during traditional staining applications where reducing direct contact with freshly stained surfaces is important. Looking Beyond the Equipment The project demonstrated that successful pre-staining involves more than the speed or efficiency of the staining equipment. Material handling, drying time, stacking methods and workflow can be equally important. Board dimensions, surface characteristics and stain formulations all influence how lumber must be managed during production. A process designed for standard 6-foot fence pickets may require significant modifications when applied to 20-foot boards with smooth faces and a pigmented finish. For StainTrac, the solution was not to modify the staining machine but to improve the processes surrounding it. "Pre-staining is really a complete production process," adds Yoshi. "The machine is one part of that process, but how the material is supported, handled and prepared for the next step can have just as much impact on the finished product."
18
NOVEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
By combining mechanized stain application with a custom-built rack and modified handling techniques, StainTrac successfully pre-stained the 20-foot, smooth-face lumber using a semitransparent finish. The experience also reinforced a broader lesson for fence contractors and lumber operations considering pre-staining: production challenges do not always require expensive equipment modifications or complicated solutions. In some cases, identifying where problems occur and making practical adjustments to the workflow can expand the range of materials and finishes that can be successfully pre-stained. American Timber and Steel EXPANDS PRODUCT LINES TO MEET DEMAND
American Timber and Steel (ATS) has supplied timber products since 1983, but a decision in 2004 to begin manufacturing pressure-treated turned wood fence posts opened the door to significant growth in the fencing industry. Over the past 22 years, that developing product line has grown into a major part of the company's business. Today, ATS is a leading manufacturer and supplier of pressure-treated turned fence posts for agricultural and solar fencing applications, with products used on farms, ranches, solar sites, parks, commercial properties and residential projects across the country. The company's fencing product line centers on three primary categories: turned round posts, split rail fencing and round rail fencing. All are manufactured from southern yellow pine, a species selected for its strength, treatability and potential for long service life when properly pressure-treated. Agricultural fencing has remained the foundation of ATS' fence post business. Farmers, ranchers and professional fence contractors rely on its turned posts for line posts, corners, braces and other livestock fencing applications. The turning process produces straight posts with consistent diameters, helping make installation more predictable and efficient. That uniformity is particularly valuable for contractors installing thousands of feet of fencing, where variations in post dimensions can affect installation time and productivity. The company's growth has been supported by continued investment in manufacturing capabilities and a focus on customer needs. As demand increased, ATS expanded its equipment, inventory, treating capacity and workforce to support larger production volumes and maintain product consistency. Relationships with fence dealers, distributors and contractors have also played an important role, providing insight into product requirements and expectations throughout the industry. More recently, solar field fencing has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments of the company's fence post business. Utility-scale solar projects often require miles of perimeter fencing, creating demand for large quantities of consistent, pressure-treated wood posts. Wood posts combined with woven wire also offer a natural, rural appearance that can complement the agricultural settings where many solar installations are located. Beyond agricultural and solar applications, ATS products serve a variety of commercial, recreational and residential markets. Split rail and round rail fencing are commonly used around parks, trails, parking areas and campgrounds, while property owners and businesses use these products for boundaries, entrances and landscaping. "Whether it is a cattle operation, a professional fence contractor installing miles of agricultural fence, or a large solar project, the expectation is really the same," says Steve Adelman, vice president of American Timber and Steel. "The customer needs a consistent, dependable pressure-treated post that will 20
NOVEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
perform. That is what we have worked to build our business around for more than two decades." Although fencing has become a significant part of ATS' operations, the company also supplies pressure-treated timber products for highway and Department of Transportation applications, government projects, marine construction, bridges and other specialty timber uses. Looking back on the company's expansion since entering the turnedpost market in 2004, Adelman credits continued reinvestment, dedicated employees and longstanding customer relationships. "We're proud of how much the business has grown, but we recognize that growth came from continued reinvestment, dedicated employees and customers who trusted ATS to supply their projects," Adelman says. As demand for dependable wood fencing materials continues across multiple markets, ATS remains focused on the product consistency, manufacturing capabilities and customer relationships that have supported its growth for more than two decades. Behind a Better Wood Fence From the road, two newly installed wood fences may look nearly identical. What you can't see, however, can make all the difference in how those fences perform over time. The growth characteristics of the tree, drying process, pressure treatment and quality-control measures all play important roles in the longevity of a wood fence. Paying attention to these details can separate an average fence from one built to last. At the foundation of any fence are the posts. If the fence posts are not strong, the fence won't be either. Old South Wood Preserving, LLC sources southern yellow pine logs from mature trees with the growth characteristics needed to produce strong fence posts. How can you tell? “The growth rings at the end of our fence posts are one of the best indicators of their strength,” explains Randall Dodd, Old South Wood Preserving sales representative. “Tighter, denser growth rings can be an indication of mature wood and are among the characteristics considered when evaluating material for fence posts. Not only does a strong post add years to the lifespan of a fence, but it also helps prevent splitting as the posts are driven into the ground during installation.” While a strong log is the first step in producing a long-lasting fence post, what happens next is just as important. Wood naturally contains a significant amount of moisture, which must be reduced before the treatment process can begin. “Our fence posts spend approximately 46 hours in the kiln, and we test their moisture content before transferring them to the treating plant,” says post mill operator Brent Johns, “If the posts have not reached the proper moisture level after the initial kiln cycle, they are sent back through the kiln. This added step helps ensure the wood is properly conditioned to absorb the preservative during pressure treatment.” Untreated or improperly treated fence posts are more susceptible to termites, rot and decay, making proper pressure treatment essential to the longevity of a wood fence. During the treatment process, preservative is forced into the wood under pressure, providing protection in conditions where untreated wood is more likely to deteriorate. However, completing the treatment cycle is only part of the process. Verifying that the preservative has properly penetrated the wood and that the required amount has been retained is equally important. At Old South Wood Preserving, 20 core samples are taken from every charge and tested for both penetration and retention. These quality-control measures help ensure each charge meets treatment standards before the material

leaves the facility. “The same procedures we take to ensure our fence posts are sturdy, dry and treated properly also apply to our fence boards,” says general manager Mark Jent A quality wood fence begins long before the first post is set. It starts with the trees the products come from and continues through every step of the manufacturing process. From selecting strong timber and properly drying the wood to pressure treatment and quality-control testing, the details behind the finished product can make all the difference. Behind a better wood fence are better materials, careful processes and a commitment to quality from the ground up. Learn more at oldsouthwood.com

The test compared substrate and performance of wood coatings. The wood samples were exposed at a 45˚angle on a south-west facing rack for maximum exposure at 51˚Latitude. After 10 years and three phases of testing, Sansin’s three-coat, Precision Coat translucent and opaque systems exhibited excellent performance on Accoya. The Precision Coat KP-systems were evaluated in two colors: translucent – Medallion 1187 and opaque white – RAL 9010. These coatings were applied to wood substrates including Accoya, Meranti, Merbau, Pine, Spruce and thermally modified wood. “Long-term coating performance depends on coating technology, application expertise and substrate stability,” says John Alexander, group commercial director. “Sansin’s investment in product innovation and long-term testing on Accoya reflects a shared commitment to performance and innovation. These results demonstrate the powerful synergy between Accoya’s exceptional dimensional stability and Sansin’s advanced coating systems, helping extend maintenance intervals while delivering low maintenance, long-lasting beauty and protection for exterior applications.” Sansin’s water-borne coatings utilize nanotechnology, combined with oils and resins in a way which works synergistically with wood to provide superior protection. These water-borne coatings penetrate deeply, forming a durable, breathable barrier that resists cracking, and peeling. Sansin’s low-VOC formula’s enhance Accoya’s natural beauty while providing enhanced, longlasting protection. Sansin offers product performance limited warranties in collaboration with eligible factory finish partners for up to 15 years on Accoya radiata pine vertical surfaces. Sansin’s KP-Systems should be used specifically for their intended use, and terms and conditions apply. “At Sansin, we’ve always been deeply committed to setting the highest standard in wood coating performance,” says Sjoerd Bos, managing director of The Sansin Corporation. “Collaborative testing with Accsys Technologies has reinforced our confidence in the synergy between Accoya® wood and the Sansin KP-40 and KP-50 coating systems. When coated with these systems, the exceptional stability and durability of Accoya radiata pine significantly extend maintenance intervals on vertical surfaces.” Learn more at sansin.com.
Wood Fencing WITH ROOM FOR CHOICE
A wood fence can be practical, aesthetic or full of natural character. Whether defining property boundaries, enclosing livestock or enhancing a landscape, the right combination of posts and rails can provide both practical performance and visual appeal. The correct type of posts and rails depend on the site, how it will be built and the look the customer desires. Pacific Western Lumber (PacWest) in Lakewood, Washington, supplies wood products to customers in the fencing and building industries, with an emphasis on product selection, customer service and dependable distribution. The company works with manufacturing partners to provide a range of lumber and specialty wood products, helping customers source materials that meet their project requirements. Through its partnership with Frontier Post and Poles, PacWest offers fence contractors a variety of lodgepole pine products designed for different installation requirements and aesthetic preferences. Limited quantities of other species, including Western Larch, are also available. “Every fencing project has different requirements, and having options allows contractors to select materials that fit both the application and the customer's expectations,” says Steve Wearne, poles sales manager with PacWest. “Whether the priority is function, appearance or a combination of both, we want to help customers find the right solution.” At its Stevensville, Montana, facility, Frontier peels, manufactures and pressure treats the wood. PacWest assists customers in choosing materials, coordinating orders and arranging delivery. The companies offer materials suited for a range of applications, including jackleg fencing, agricultural fencing and traditional post-and-rail designs. Available products include round poles, half-rounds, natural bark poles and tenoned rails. Continued on p26 FENCENEWS.COM | NOVEMBER 2026

SPECIAL SECTION | Wood Fencing, continued from p25 For projects requiring a more uniform appearance, constant-diameter posts and rails are machined to maintain the same diameter along their entire length. This provides a consistent profile that can be particularly appealing in decorative and architectural applications. Posts are also available predrilled for two-, three- and four-rail configurations, including inline, end and corner posts. Custom sizing options allow contractors to accommodate specific project dimensions and design requirements. Material selection also involves understanding the conditions in which the fence will be installed. Ground contact, moisture exposure and insect activity can influence whether treated or untreated wood is appropriate. For farm and ranch applications, Frontier offers lodgepole pine posts pressure-
treated with chromated copper arsenate. PacWest works with customers to identify treatment options suited to the intended application, taking into account exposure conditions and project requirements. Beyond performance considerations, wood fencing offers considerable design flexibility. Peeled lodgepole pine creates a traditional rustic appearance, while natural bark poles provide a more organic look that blends with wooded or rural surroundings. Constant-diameter components offer a more uniform finish for customers seeking a cleaner, more structured design. “Wood fencing doesn't have to be a one-size-fits-all product,” adds Wearne. “The different profiles and finishes allow builders to create a fence that complements its surroundings, whether that's a working ranch, a residential property or a commercial landscape.”
Wood Fencing Approaches 2027 WITH DIFFICULT CHOICES AND A SHARPER FOCUS ON SUPPLY
As 2026 draws to a close, price remains a major consideration for wood fence buyers. Distributors and contractors are also weighing availability, finish, installation labor and whether they can get product when they need it next season. The market offers a broad range of materials. Western red cedar appeals to customers seeking natural beauty and resistance to rot, decay and insects. Douglas fir offers strength and natural beauty. Incense cedar, red pine, redwood, mixed whitewood, eastern white cedar and treated southern yellow pine serve different regional needs and price points. Because species, treatment and finish all affect appearance and performance, buyers benefit from comparing the complete product rather than its wood name alone. Alta Forest Products manufactures wood fencing in the United States. Its western red cedar and douglas fir Summit products are milled domestically from wood sourced in the Pacific Northwest. Alta offers its Pro-Finish oil stain on western red cedar and douglas fir pickets, with the finish applied at the factory so boards arrive ready to install. “Customers want a fence that fits the job, but they also need to know when they can get it,” says Dave Cochenour, Alta’s director of sales. “Making our products here in the USA gives us a more direct path from the mill to the market and helps us work with distributors as their needs change.” Domestic manufacturing does not eliminate supply challenges. Log availability, production costs, trucking and seasonal demand still affect prices and lead times. But Alta’s U.S.-made pickets do not require an ocean crossing and are not directly subject to the import duties or container freight costs that can affect the landed price of imported finished pickets.
26
NOVEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
Pro-Finish is another part of the buying decision. Cochenour says a factory-applied stain can provide a consistent appearance while reducing staining work at the job site. Through its partnership with Wood Defender, Alta offers Pro-Finish on western red cedar and douglas fir pickets, giving contractors and distributors a ready-toinstall option in either species. Buyers are likely to remain selective through the balance of 2026, balancing the cost of carrying too much inventory against the risk of having too little. Trade developments add another planning consideration. In September, the American Alliance of Wooden Fence Producers, which includes Alta, filed petitions with the Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission seeking antidumping and countervailing duty investigations into certain wooden fence pickets from China. The outcome remains uncertain, making it important to plan around actual supply needs rather than assume a particular result. Housing offers a similarly mixed picture. U.S. Census Bureau figures show that August’s overall housing starts fell from July, while single-family starts rose to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 918,000. Looking ahead, the National Association of Home Builders forecasts modest growth in residential remodeling in 2027. Neither measure predicts fence sales directly, but both help distributors assess demand for new construction and improvements to existing homes. For Alta, the 2027 outlook calls for measured planning across species, finishes and price points. “No one can predict exactly where every cost or trade policy will land in 2027,” Cochenour says. “Our job is to help customers navigate those changes with dependable U.S. production, clear product choices and a plan for the season ahead.” Learn more at altafp.com.
For fence contractors, access to a broad product selection can make it easier to accommodate customer preferences while meeting the practical demands of each installation. Working with suppliers that understand both the materials and their applications can also simplify product selection and purchasing. By combining Frontier's manufacturing capabilities with PacWest's customer service and distribution coordination, the companies provide fence builders with a range of wood fencing options suited to projects of different sizes, styles and purposes. Wood Defender Introduces Sunlit Brown A NEW FORMULATION FOR PRE-STAIN AND FIELD APPLICATION Wood Defender® is expanding its Semi-Transparent stain lineup with Sunlit Brown, a new color developed to address a familiar challenge in fence production: achieving a more consistent finish on imported cedar while preserving the natural character of wood. Manufactured by Standard Paints, Inc. in Mansfield, Texas, Sunlit Brown combines a heavier pigment load with a hybrid formulation built on the company’s top-performing resin systems. Developed through research and testing, it helps minimize differences in wood undertones while meeting the needs of pre-stain operations that stack material wet. A Formulation Built Around Real Production Challenges Imported cedar sourced from different regions and mills can vary considerably in its raw appearance. Subspecies, growing regions, and processing methods—even the saw blades used—can influence undertones, creating a quality-control challenge when those differences carry through to the stained product. “We developed Sunlit Brown around a specific challenge: imported cedar can have noticeably different undertones depending on its source and how it’s processed. We wanted to minimize those differences while keeping the grain visible and meeting the needs of pre-stain operations that stack material wet,” says Alix Stevenson, vice president of research & development with Standard Paints, Inc. In addition, the stain color’s heavier pigment load helps reduce undertone variation, delivering richer, more consistent color while allowing the grain to remain visible. Its ability to be stacked wet makes it a practical SemiTransparent option for pre-stain producers
The formulation preserves the individuality of the wood. Even when applied to saturation, Sunlit Brown does not produce uniformly colored pickets, and pronounced undertone differences may still be visible between adjoining boards. It creates a more cohesive appearance while retaining the grain and character customers expect from stained cedar. Benefits Beyond the Production Line Sunlit Brown’s added pigment and hybrid design also contribute to longevity. Built on proven Wood Defender resin systems, it provides lasting protection and carries the brand’s three-year Semi-Transparent warranty. For fence contractors, the formulation offers benefits across new construction and maintenance projects. In phased developments, where perimeter fencing is installed over time, Sunlit Brown can help ease the visual transition between older pre-stained sections and new material. It offers a similar advantage along shared fence lines when only part of a fence is being refreshed “Sunlit Brown also gives contractors another option when refreshing fences previously stained with Oxford Brown or Leatherwood. The added pigment helps mask age and imperfections while preserving the wood’s character,” adds Roy Branch, director of wholesale with Standard Paints, Inc. Sunlit Brown is available on pre-stained pickets distributed by Master Halco. It is also available as liquid stain for pre-stain operations and in one-gallon and five-gallon containers for field application. From production facilities to existing fence lines, Sunlit Brown gives producers and contractors another way to manage color variation, protect exterior wood, and deliver an attractive finish. Glass Flooring Systems Introduces Custom Glass Railing Systems Engineered for the World’s Most Exclusive Spaces
Glass Flooring Systems, the manufacturer that set the benchmark for structural glass floors and SkyFloor® walkable skylights, has introduced its Custom Glass Railing Systems, a fully engineered railing line created for architects, custom home builders, designers, and glazing professionals whose clients demand the clearest glass, the finest hardware, and the most refined finish available.
package: the clearest glass, the finest hardware, templating, shop drawings, and engineering, all from one source. Our clients often come to us with designs that fall outside standard railing configurations. Custom sizes, shapes, curves, and slopes are all part of what we can accommodate,” says Wayne Conklin, president of Glass Flooring Systems.
Each system is designed, engineered, and fabricated to the exact shape and flow of the space, from a gentle sweep around a staircase to a full wraparound balcony, and arrives as one coordinated package: glass, hardware, permit-ready shop drawings, and glass-specific engineering.
Glass Flooring Systems created its railing line to meet that standard in full:
Until now, glass railings for luxury projects have come from one of two places. Glass shops can supply a panel but rarely the engineering, stamped drawings, or code documentation a highend project requires. Volume manufacturers offer standard sizes that cannot follow a sloped deck, a curved stair, or a custom transition between straight and curved runs. Architects and builders have been left to assemble glass, hardware, engineering, and approvals from separate sources, with the finished result rarely living up to the architecture around it. “We’re not doing this the way it’s normally done. There are glass shops that will sell you a railing, and there are companies that mass-produce railings at standard sizes. What hasn’t existed is a company focused on the high-end market with the full 32

BUSINESS SURVIVAL AND THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE byTom Luby owner of Profit Builders International
In November of 1996 gas was $1.07 a gallon, the fence minimum wage was $4.40 an hour, and I entered the fence industry as a consultant with Mr. Joseph Miller of Miller Fence Company in Worcester, Massachusetts. Now, three decades later, the fence industry is struggling with the price of diesel pushing $7.00 and unknown tariffs that make bidding a crystal ball event. I have never seen margins squeezed so thin as I have these past few months. Complaining, however, won’t get us anywhere. To survive, we have to eliminate waste, cut overhead to the bone and bid with extreme caution. We need to seek excellence in every facit of our work environment. Recently I reached out to my first ever fence industry client and spoke to Joe’s daughter, Kim Miller, who is now president and runs the company. I asked her how she saw the changes in the industry we both love over these past three decades, and here are some of her comments on the industry. “Obviously, there have been some major changes, especially with consolidation. A lot of the old independent fence mills and manufacturers that were around for generations are no longer here. Many long-time brands have been purchased by larger companies and investment groups. I think that has brought some positive things to the industry, but it has also changed certain products, pricing and the way contractors interact with manufacturers. Some of the old products are also becoming harder to find. Things like turned posts, round light posts and other specialty materials used to be much easier to source because there were still mills making them. With so many of those companies gone, some of those products and a lot of the knowledge behind them have disappeared as well. I think anyone who has been in the industry for a long time has noticed that. At the same time, I don't think it’s fair to say that everything was better years ago. In a lot of ways, the industry is much better today. The tools and technology we have now are incredible compared with what we had when I started. Laser levels, GPS and layout equipment, cordless tools, improved welding equipment, excavation equipment, estimating/ CRM software and all of the technology we use to run a business have made us much more efficient and accurate. There are also so many more products and styles available today. Fencing has become much more than just a functional barrier. There are endless 42

options in vinyl, aluminum, ornamental, wood and other materials, with different colors, finishes and designs. Customers have a lot more ability to customize a fence to the property rather than simply choosing from a handful of options.
Kim painting fencing as a teen.
Security has also taken a huge leap forward. Automated gates, access control, anti-climb systems, crash-rated barriers and other security products have made fencing part of a much larger security solution. That whole side of the industry has grown tremendously. The business itself has changed too. Customers can research products and companies online, look at photos and reviews, and get a lot of information before they ever contact a contractor. Estimating, scheduling, purchasing, project management and communication have all become much more digital. One thing that hasn't changed, though, is the importance of relationships. We’ve always tried to maintain that contractor/vendor relationship and stay involved in the industry. I think those relationships are a big part of what makes this industry unique. There is also still a tremendous amount of knowledge that comes from actually doing the work. Finding experienced installers, welders, fabricators and estimators has become harder, and there are certain things you simply learn from being out there in the field for years. The tools have changed, the products have changed and the way we run the business has changed, but there is still no substitute for experience. I’ve attached a few photos too. My body isn't quite in the shape it was when I was installing fences every day, but I can still do some side work for friends from time to time! I installed a wood and rope fence for a friend on Cape Cod a few weekends ago, and I’m happy to report that I still got it! Haha. After being around it my whole life, it’s pretty amazing to see how much the fence business has evolved and yet how much of the basic trade is still the same”. Thank you, Kim, for that perspective of the fence industry. I know your dad must be proud of how far you, your dad, and your grandfather have taken Miller Fence over the past six decades. I know I am very proud of the hundreds of fence clients I have helped over all these years, and the millions of dollars of extra profit I helped them earn. Equally important is the satisfaction and quality of life that a well-run fence company can
Joe and Kim
generate. Here’s to all of those many, many clients across America, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mary Hummon, general manager at Fence News USA, whom I have worked with for over 25 years, Kristy Armand, editor of Fence News and the entire staff and, of course, our publisher Charles Harris. New ProWood Product Named BobVila.com 2026 Tool of the Year Award Winner ProWood®, a leading manufacturer and distributor of premium pressure-treated lumber, has announced that its 4x4 Deck Railing Post Pocket has been named a BobVila.com 2026 Tool of the Year in the DIY Essentials category. Now in its third year, the awards program recognizes the market's most innovative products for utility, quality construction, and originality. ProWood was chosen from nearly 400 entries considered this year. The 4x4 Deck Railing Post Pocket anchors wood railing posts directly to the deck's joist, reinforcing the connection while staying fully hidden once the deck is finished. It is engineered to meet code requirements for 36" and 42" deck railings (AC174/AC273) and installs as a single, all-in-one kit with no extra hardware runs required. "Getting the post connection right the first time is one of the trickiest parts of a deck build," says Luke Snyder, product manager at ProWood. "This product is designed to take the guesswork out of that process. This recognition validates what we set out to do, which was to give builders and DIYers hardware that installs fast and holds up." Paul Harrison
RETIRED GENERAL MANAGER OF EAGLE FENCE DISTRIBUTING
With more than five decades in the fence industry, Paul Harrison has built a career spanning manufacturing, distribution, contracting and executive leadership. A member of the American Fence Association Hall of Fame, Harrison has helped grow companies, expand product lines and build distribution networks across the country. Today, he continues with Eagle Fence Distributing, drawing on the relationships, resourcefulness and commitment that have defined his 52-year career. HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO THE FENCE INDUSTRY AND WHAT PATH LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
work for them. I accepted the job and moved up to Maryland as the sales manager for the Northeast Territory.
I entered the fence business in 1974, largely out of necessity, after serving two years in the U.S. Army. I was working for a small company, but my compensation wasn’t enough for me to get married and eventually start a family. I was renting half of a duplex from a friend who worked for Hackney Corporation. He arranged an interview, and Hackney offered me a job in Louisville, Kentucky. I spent approximately six years there before returning to Alabama to become sales manager for contract sales.
IS THERE A PARTICULAR PROJECT OR MILESTONE THAT STANDS OUT AS ESPECIALLY MEANINGFUL IN YOUR CAREER?
Hackney was sold to Merchants Truck Line, which became part of Merchants Metals. I later joined Vanguard Corporation, a manufacturer and distributor of chain link products, where I helped open distribution centers throughout the Southeast and Midwest. Vanguard was purchased by Southeastern Wire, where I spent more than 20 years opening and overseeing distribution centers. I also helped expand Southeastern into wood fencing, including pressure-treated pine and western red cedar. When Southeastern was sold to Diamond Exteriors, an installation arm for Sears Roebuck, I disagreed with combining distribution and contracting, so I left on good terms and went to work for a major contractor in North Alabama. When this arrangement didn’t work out as anticipated, I was approached by Merchants Metal to see if I was interested in going back to
44
NOVEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
Two opportunities stand out. The first came when I returned to Merchants Metals as Northeast sales manager. About 10 months later, the company went through executive management changes and was without a president overseeing day-today operations. I contacted the owners and board of directors, which at the time was Citi Group, and told them I was interested in the position. They gave me the opportunity, and I moved to Houston to serve as president of Merchants Metals. During that same period, I was nominated and approved to serve for 2 years as president of the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute, an organization dedicated to promoting chain link products and upholding their quality and standards. I stayed at Merchants for approximately six years until they were purchased by Oldcastle Building Products and was terminated in 2007. When I came back to Alabama, I began helping a friend who owned Eagle Fence Manufacturing. Southwestern Wire eventually purchased the company and asked me to stay. I agreed on the condition that we develop the distribution side of the business, and Eagle Fence Distributing was created.
I was fortunate to become part of a team that understood both the steel market and the fence industry. That combination provided a strong foundation for what we were able to build. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHANGES YOU’VE SEEN IN THE FENCE INDUSTRY? The range of products and customer expectations have changed dramatically. In my early years, manufacturers often served as distributors, opening distribution centers throughout the country. Over time, those centers added wood fencing, ornamental steel and aluminum and PVC fencing to create additional revenue and offer more architecturally appealing options. As the industry expanded into these categories, chain link became a smaller part of the overall product mix, even though it remains a very costeffective, high-security fencing solution. HOW HAVE THE RELATIONSHIPS YOU’VE BUILT THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR SUCCESS? The fence industry has always been about relationships — with contractors, distributors, vendors and employees. A huge part of my success can be attributed to the relationships I’ve built along the way. Even today, I receive calls from people around the country asking for my thoughts on different situations. I’m honored that people value my opinion and experience. Being inducted into the American Fence Association Hall of Fame was also a tremendous honor. I’m proud to have represented this
industry and the people who have helped make it what it is today. Most of all, I’m grateful to the many people, past and present, who have given me their friendship and trust. Those relationships mean as much to me as anything I have accomplished. WHAT MAKES SOUTHWESTERN WIRE UNIQUE WITHIN THE FENCE INDUSTRY? Southwestern Wire was started by Max Moore and Steve Peters after they purchased the assets of Acme Fence Manufacturing, a chain link fence manufacturer in Norman, Oklahoma, that was in bankruptcy. The Moore family was already heavily involved in the steel and wire business. The company grew into a fully integrated manufacturing operation. We melt our own scrap metal, produce our own billets, convert them into steel rod and draw the rod to the gauges needed to manufacture a variety of steel and wire products. We also produce galvanized and vinylcoated steel wire and convert wire into chain link fence products. Being a domestic manufacturer gives us greater control over the manufacturing process and allows us to serve both the fence industry and a variety of other industries.
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FACING THE FENCE INDUSTRY TODAY? At every level of the industry, finding and retaining good people remains a day-to-day challenge. At the same time, the number and variety of products we handle create both opportunities and challenges. Maintaining that product mix requires careful management of cash flow, inventory and logistics. Customers expect availability and selection, which requires increasingly complex operations. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THE NEXT GENERATION OF FENCE PROFESSIONALS WHO WANT TO BUILD A LONG AND SUCCESSFUL CAREER?
I tried to learn something from them. Stay curious, be resourceful and never stop learning from the people around you. WHAT CONTINUES TO MOTIVATE YOU TO STAY ACTIVE AND ENGAGED? Hard work, honesty, commitment and the desire to succeed have kept me going for 52 years. For however long I am fortunate enough to continue working, my goal is simple: do the right thing and be able to look in the mirror every day and be proud of what I have accomplished.
Whatever you choose to do, you have to be 100% committed. For me, this has never been a nineto-five, 40-hour-a-week job. I’ve always believed that when you tell someone you are going to do something, you jump through whatever hoops are necessary to make it happen. Someone I worked for once told me my greatest talent was resourcefulness. I’ve always taken that as a compliment. Regardless of where I went, whom I met or what type of business they were in,

Sponsored by Mission-Ready: Why Veterans Are a Valuable Addition to Your Company Finding dependable, skilled employees remains one of the biggest challenges for fence contractors and other businesses across the construction industry. While companies often focus on attracting experienced installers or recruiting young people entering the trades, there is another talent pool worth considering: military veterans. For veterans transitioning to civilian employment, the fence industry offers opportunities to develop a skilled trade, work with a team and build a longterm career. For fence companies, hiring veterans can provide access to motivated candidates with valuable experience and transferable skills.
A Strong Work Ethic and Sense of Responsibility Veterans are accustomed to working within established procedures, meeting deadlines and understanding how individual performance affects the success of an entire team. Installation crews depend on team members who can improve productivity, reduce costly mistakes and help keep projects on schedule. Leadership and Teamwork Not every veteran held a formal leadership position, but military service provides extensive experience working as part of a team, supervising personnel, coordinating assignments and making decisions under pressure. These experiences can translate well into crew leadership, project supervision and operations management.
58
NOVEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
Technical Skills and Safety Awareness Depending on their military background, veterans may already have experience operating machinery, maintaining equipment, reading technical instructions or coordinating complex projects. Military training frequently emphasizes risk assessment, proper equipment use and adherence to established procedures. While veterans may still need training in specific techniques, their previous experience can provide a strong foundation for learning the trade. Adaptability and Problem-Solving Fence contractors know that even carefully planned installations can encounter unexpected challenges. Veterans are often familiar with working in changing environments, evaluating situations and finding practical solutions with available resources. Their ability to remain focused and respond to challenges can be an asset both on the job site and in management positions. Military experience does not automatically make someone the right fit for every position, but military job titles do not always clearly communicate the skills a veteran possesses. Employers should look beyond traditional industry experience and ask candidates about their professional background to find qualifications that might otherwise be overlooked. Giving veterans an opportunity to apply their skills in a new environment can be a smart hiring decision for companies and a meaningful way to support those who have served.

ZND US Named Exclusive U.S. Distributor for ättaGard Deployable Anti-Ram Bollard System Ontario Bollards Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of perimeter protection systems, has announced that ZND US has been appointed exclusive U.S. distributor of the ättaGard deployable anti-ram bollard system. ZND US holds sole rights to sell ättaGard to rental companies and their affiliated distributors across the United States. Vehicle-ramming incidents and tighter security requirements around festivals, parades, and work zones have made deployable anti-ram bollards a fast-growing category in perimeter security. ättaGard is a crash-tested portable bollard that sits directly on the pavement and deploys in minutes. No mounting, no excavation, no civil work, and no permanent footprint. Pedestrian-friendly and visually clean, it's a long step beyond the concrete blocks and Jersey walls cities have had to live with.
"Rental is how perimeter protection scales," says Gary Bryant, chief revenue officer, Ontario Bollards Inc. "Cities, event organizers, contractors, and security teams need crash-tested vehicle barriers on the ground in hours, not months, through the rental companies they already work with. ZND US sells to the rental industry exclusively, understands the rental customer, and has the national footprint to make ättaGard available anywhere it's needed." "ättaGard fits a clear gap in our customers' rental fleets," says Seth Walters, president, ZND US. "Event organizers, municipalities, and contractors managing high-risk work zones are asking our rental partners for crash-tested vehicle barriers more often. Until now, no deployable product met the engineering bar at the price point the rental channel needs. ättaGard solves that, and we're positioned to roll it out nationally."

76 FENCE Continues National Expansion With Growth in Ohio and Texas Fencing franchise celebrates Greater Cincinnati grand opening while expanding into two new Southeast Houston territories 76 FENCE, one of the nation’s fastest-growing fencing franchise brands, is continuing its national expansion with recent growth in Ohio and Texas, including the grand opening of its Greater Cincinnati operation and the addition of two territories serving Southeast Houston. The growth represents continued momentum for 76 FENCE as the company expands its network of locally owned operations providing residential and commercial fencing services backed by established systems, technology and customerfocused service standards. In Ohio, 76 FENCE Greater Cincinnati recently celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Towne Square Pavilion in Blue Ash. The celebration followed the operation’s soft opening earlier this summer and brought together local elected officials, business leaders, community partners, family and friends. Owners Andrew Ford and Dan Menninger operate two territories serving Greater Cincinnati, including Blue Ash, Cincinnati, Hamilton, Mason, West Chester, Liberty Township, Montgomery, Hyde Park, Indian Hill, Lebanon, Middletown and surrounding communities. “Since we began operating this summer, we’ve had the opportunity to meet homeowners, businesses, and partners throughout the area, and the response has reinforced why we were so excited about bringing 76 FENCE to the Greater Cincinnati area,” says Menninger. “This event was a chance to celebrate that early momentum, thank the people who have supported us, and continue building the relationships that we believe will be essential to our long-term success.” The company is also expanding its presence in Texas with new franchise owners Cameron and Abigail “Abby” Sarage, who will own and operate two territories serving the Southeast Houston market. 76 FENCE Southeast Houston will serve homeowners and businesses throughout Pearland, Pasadena, Friendswood, Manvel, South Houston, Taylor Lake Village, Webster and surrounding communities. The operation will be headquartered in Pearland. Both Houston-area natives, Cameron and Abby bring complementary professional experiences and a shared commitment to building a family business centered on integrity, communication and customer service. They were drawn to Southeast Houston in part because of the continued residential and commercial development taking place throughout Pearland, Pasadena and surrounding communities. “What attracted us to 76 FENCE was the combination of the people, the culture and the 66

opportunity to build something that aligns with our values,” says Abby Sarage. “From the beginning, it felt like a natural fit for our family and the future we’re working toward. We want to build a business that is known not only for quality work, but for honesty, transparency and treating people with respect.” The Southeast Houston expansion builds on 76 FENCE’s growing presence in Texas while the Greater Cincinnati grand opening marks another milestone in the company’s expansion into new markets. “Cameron and Abby have a clear vision for the type of business they want to build and the reputation they want to earn in their community,” says Ed Samane, CEO of 76 FENCE. “Their commitment to integrity, communication, and taking care of people aligns extremely well with our brand. We’re excited to support them as they establish 76 FENCE as a trusted resource for homeowners and businesses throughout Southeast Houston.” Ford and Menninger launched 76 FENCE Greater Cincinnati after careers spanning technology, consulting, operations and relationship management. Similarly, the Sarages plan to use their professional experience and local ties to establish a strong presence in Southeast Houston. Cameron’s professional background includes experience in organization, customer service and operations. Abby has a background in kinesiology and the clinical research industry and operates a financial coaching business serving individuals and business owners. Both operations reflect 76 FENCE’s approach to pairing local ownership and community
involvement with companywide resources designed to bring greater professionalism and consistency to the fencing industry. 76 FENCE provides residential and commercial fencing solutions with an emphasis on quality craftsmanship, efficient service and a seamless customer experience. From the Field to Software Josiah Fuerte’s path to developing design software began in construction at age 18, serving in the U.S. Navy Seabees. After his military career, Fuerte entered the gate industry in distribution at Gates and Controls in Seattle. He then moved into the field, working as an apprentice and laborer for Guardian Gate Controls in Tacoma and Automated Gates and Equipment in Seattle. He later joined CPSG, where he opened and managed its North Carolina branch. Throughout his career, Fuerte encountered a reoccurring problem; how to get a clear, professional drawing in front of a customer without making drafting a separate specialty. “I knew the gate I wanted to build,” Fuerte says. “What I needed was a practical way to draw it, show it to the customer and communicate the details of the job.” When he couldn’t find the answer, he created the solution with Ornamental Designer Pro, a platform for designing gates, fences and railings. For years, Fuerte relied on an older desktop ornamental design program. When it was discontinued and no longer supported, he began looking for a replacement. He explored other design applications but struggled to find a workflow that suited his day-to-day needs. “The goal from the beginning was to make drawing ornamental gates and fences as easy as clicking buttons,” Fuerte says. “With Ornamental Designer Pro, we have made it easier than ever with tools, features, and an AI assistant, for users to create their designs. A customer may have a very different picture in mind when you describe a gate. This software allows a contractor to develop a 3D design for a customer to review in context. Seeing the design can

make discussions about proportions, patterns and appearance more productive for both parties before the project begins.” As a project moves from sales to the shop and installation crew, drawings also provide a shared reference for the approved work. Dimensions and annotations help communicate decisions that might otherwise get lost in communication. Fuerte says Ornamental Designer Pro can be beneficial software to experienced designers and day-to-day sales teams. “Ornamental Designer Pro allows anyone to draw a gate and build a proposal for the customer. This saves both the contractor and customer time and clarifies expectations, ensuring a successful job from the start,” Fuerte says. To learn more, visit ornamentaldesignerpro.com.

In Memoriam KENT BAILEY Kent Bailey passed away on September 27, 2026, following a brief battle with cancer. In 1984, Kent and his brother Karrick founded Bailey Fence Company. For more than four decades, Kent dedicated himself to the company and to the fencing industry, helping build a family business based on hard work, lasting relationships, and a reputation for doing things the right way. Kent's impact extended far beyond Bailey Fence Company. He was a longtime leader within the American Fence Association, served as AFA President, and in 2011 was inducted into the American Fence Association Hall of Fame in recognition of his service, leadership, and contributions to the fencing industry. Kent spent years working alongside his son, Luke, teaching him not only the fencing business, but his approach to doing business: keep your word, be straightforward with people, make decisions based on common sense, and do what is right. Luke will step into Kent's role and carry those principles forward alongside Karrick and the Bailey Fence Company team. Phillip will be remembered not only for his professional expertise, but also for his humanity. His caring nature, reverence for life, and willingness to drop everything to serve those in need will be deeply missed.

Think Climate Change Doesn’t Impact the Fence Industry? Think Again. by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP executive vice president, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute | 2022 Inductee, American Fence Association Hall of Fame
Despite all of the scientific research that has been done in the past 20 years regarding climate change, there are still people in the fence industry who don’t accept it as a true occurrence. There are others who acknowledge that climate change is actually occurring but still insist it doesn’t have a big impact on the fence industry. These people need to check out the facts. Climate Trends Impacting the Fencing Industry The Growing Frequency of Billion-Dollar Disasters: According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. has sustained over 370 weather and climate disaster events since 2001 that resulted in damages exceeding $1 billion each. The rising frequency of these events – which include severe storms, floods, and wildfires – directly correlates to increased demand for emergency repairs, more resistant fencing replacements, and reinforced perimeter security. The Increased Intensity of Severe Storms: Data indicates that both the frequency and intensity of severe storms, including high-wind events and tornadoes, are increasing. For the fencing industry, this necessitates a shift toward higher-rated wind-resistant designs, stronger post-setting techniques, and the use of heavy-duty hardware to prevent structural failure. The Rising of Temperatures and the Increase in Excessive Heat Waves: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) projects that extremely hot days will occur more frequently, with a significant increase in the number of days exceeding 95°F. • Worker Safety: These conditions directly reduce the number of hours crews can safely perform labor-intensive outdoor installation, leading to slower project completion times and higher operational costs. • Material Degradation: Prolonged exposure to intense UV radiation and extreme heat accelerates the degradation of materials like vinyl (brittleness), wood (warping), and certain coatings on metal fencing, requiring more frequent maintenance and the use of advanced, heatstabilized materials. • The Impact of Variable Precipitation: Increased volatility in precipitation patterns – leading to both flood-prone saturated soils and
prolonged droughts that cause ground shifting – compromises fence stability. This forces contractors to adapt installation methods, such as deeper footing requirements or specialized concrete mixes, to ensure long-term structural integrity against ground movement. These trends add up to a critical need for all of us to understand how climate change affects the North American fencing industry. It changes what fences need to withstand, how projects are installed, and how customers choose materials. • More extreme weather and repairs: Stronger storms, flooding, wildfire, and freeze – thaw cycles can damage fences, increase repair and replacement work, and disrupt installation schedules. • Greater demand for durable designs: Customers may look for windresistant installations, corrosion-resistant metal, rot-resistant materials, and fencing suited to local fire or flood risks. The right choice depends on site conditions and local codes. • Changing material and maintenance needs: Heat, intense sun, moisture, and temperature swings can affect wood, vinyl, coatings, and hardware differently. Contractors will need to be able to explain upkeep, expected service life, and trade-offs when recommending materials. • Workplace safety and productivity: Heat waves can make outdoor installation more hazardous and reduce the hours crews can safely work. Businesses may need heat-safety procedures, hydration and rest breaks, and schedule flexibility. • Higher costs and uncertainty: Weather-related delays, damaged inventory, insurance costs, and demand spikes after major storms can complicate scheduling and pricing. For the North American fence industry, climate change is already both a risk and a source of demand: it can create more repair work, but also raises costs and makes planning harder. Fence companies can respond by adapting designs to local hazards, training crews for heat and severe weather, keeping realistic schedules, and communicating clearly about materials and maintenance. Climate change won’t be slowing down in the near future. The need for fence contractors and manufacturers to work together to lessen the impact of all types of climate change has never been more important. Together, we can turn this growing challenge into an ongoing opportunity.

A Leadership Journey Worth Sharing by Michael Reed executive director, American Fence Association
Recently, I spoke with a leader in our industry who was preparing for his company's annual team meeting. Over the past decade, he'd helped grow his business, taken on new responsibilities from his father, and become increasingly involved as a volunteer leader with AFA. He was thinking more intentionally about what he'd learned and the kind of leader he wanted to become. He'd been reading my leadership articles in Fence News and wanted to pick my brain about the ideas I'd explored over the past year. He wanted something to share with his team that connected sound leadership principles to his own experiences and his company's growth. These are the notes from our conversation. Leadership Requires Courage It's easy to talk about leadership when things are going well. The real test comes when we must make decisions we'd rather avoid. Maybe it's a personal challenge that is dividing your attention. Maybe it's a long-time team member who isn't meeting expectations. Or perhaps it's recognizing that something we've done for years simply isn't working anymore. In The Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner remind us that leaders must Model the Way, demonstrating their values through actions, especially when it's uncomfortable. One lesson I've learned is that avoiding a difficult decision is a decision in itself. And sometimes the longer we wait, the more difficult the consequences become. Ask your team: What difficult conversations or decisions are we avoiding, and how could we address them constructively? Leadership Begins with Trust I've spent considerable time studying what makes people willing to place their confidence in someone else. Scholars have identified three characteristics that influence trust: competency, caring, and consistency. People want to know three things about their leaders. Do you know what you're doing? Do you genuinely care about me? And can I count on you to do what you say you'll do? Think about a great foreman. The title gives that person responsibility for the crew, but it doesn't automatically earn their trust. You earn it by demonstrating competence, looking out for people, and consistently doing the right thing.

NOVEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
Trust isn't something we can demand. We earn it through our behavior, one interaction at a time. Ask your team: What are we doing to build trust with one another, and what behaviors might be undermining it? Leadership Is About Setting the Stage for Others to Succeed One of the biggest transitions leaders make is moving from being responsible for their own performance to helping others perform. Consider the owner of a growing fence company. Early on, that owner may have been the best salesperson, estimator, problem solver, and installer. But as the company grows, doing everything personally becomes an obstacle. Instead of asking how others can help us succeed, we begin asking what we can do to help them succeed. That might mean providing training, clarifying expectations, removing obstacles, or empowering people to make decisions. Kouzes and Posner call this Enable Others to Act. Great leaders understand their job isn't to have all the answers. It's to develop people capable of finding answers themselves. Ask your team: What obstacles are preventing people from doing their best work, and how can we remove them? Leadership Requires a Willingness to Learn Experience is a wonderful teacher, but it can become a limitation when we believe it gives us all the answers. I've met successful industry leaders who remain curious about how others do things. They ask questions, listen carefully, and reconsider their assumptions. I've also seen leaders dismiss good ideas because they came from someone younger or less experienced. One of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership is Challenge the Process. It requires us to seek improvement, experiment with new approaches, and learn from success and failure. Technology, customer expectations, workforce dynamics, and business models are evolving rapidly. The practices that made us successful yesterday may not be enough tomorrow. Ask your team: What assumptions about how we do business should we be willing to challenge?
Leadership Is Ultimately About the Impact You Have on Others When we think about leadership success, we gravitate toward measurable accomplishments. Revenue growth, profitability, completed projects, and customer satisfaction all matter. But some of our most important accomplishments are harder to measure. Think about the person who gave you your first opportunity to lead. The mentor who encouraged you when you weren't ready. The supervisor who saw potential you hadn't yet recognized. Those people influenced your life, perhaps in ways they never understood. Kouzes and Posner's practices of Enable Others to Act and Encourage the Heart remind us that leadership is fundamentally about people. Our responsibility extends beyond today's work to helping others become more capable, confident, and prepared for tomorrow. The longer I lead, the more convinced I become that our greatest legacy isn't what we accomplish ourselves. It's what others can accomplish because we were part of their journey. Ask your team: Who are we helping grow into the next generation of leaders? Making The Journey Personal As I wrapped up the conversation, he told me he wanted to present these ideas the same way I taught them at AFA’s Leadership Academy. I encouraged him to make them personal. Rather than simply presenting these five lessons, he should have these conversations and share his own journey. Where had he demonstrated courage? How had he built trust? Who helped him learn something new, and whose growth did he make possible? So, if you're looking for a leadership framework for your next annual meeting, supervisor discussion, or team gathering, here you go. Five lessons. Five questions. And an opportunity to reflect on the leadership journey we are traveling together.

Build Stronger Vinyl Fences from the Inside Out
LMT’s Dual Fit Top Rail Tie creates a cleaner, stronger, longer-lasting connection and fits both 4” and 5” posts to help contractors simplify inventory while installing with confidence. Superior strength and stability: • Distributes rail tension across a wider area inside the post instead of concentrating stress at a single screw point. • Helps prevent sagging and pull out: Keeps rails secure and aligned, even in tall privacy installations or demanding conditions. • Supports a rigid, durable fence system that stays plumb, secure, and professional-looking over time. Protects the Post. Improves the Finish: • Reduces the risk of cracking, splitting, or weakening caused by traditional keeper screws. • Preserves the post’s appearance with a clean, hidden connection. • Helps maintain the integrity of vinyl posts as they expand and contract with temperature changes. Faster, Cleaner Installation: • Install the rails, drop in the tie, and secure the connection simple, reliable, and installer-friendly. • Dual Fit design: Works with both 4” and 5” vinyl posts, eliminating the need for an additional SKU. • Reduces the need for precise notching or repeated adjustments, helping crews save time in the field. Fewer Callbacks. More Confidence: • Minimize rail movement, gaps, warping, and misalignment over time. • Strengthens the overall fence system while supporting the low-maintenance advantages vinyl is known for. A Premium Upgrade Customers Can See and Feel: • Positions the fence system as a stronger, upgraded solution rather than a standard vinyl installation. • Gives contractors a practical selling point: reinforced rail connections for a more secure, professional build. Small Part. Big Difference: • A simple, cost-effective upgrade that helps prevent expensive repairs and replacements later. • Improves perceived value and supports a premium product position. • Helps contractors deliver a better result without adding unnecessary complexity to the installation. One tie. Two post sizes. Less inventory: LMT’s Dual Fit Top Rail Tie helps streamline ordering, reduce warehouse complexity, and keep crews moving with one reliable solution for both 4” and 5” post applications.
Bottom line: Internal top rail ties are one of the smartest upgrades for vinyl fence systems. They strengthen the rail-to-post connection, protect the vinyl post, improve installation efficiency, and help create a fence that looks better and performs longer. Upgrade every post with confidence. Choose internal top rail ties for cleaner installations, stronger connections, and fewer callbacks because a better fence starts with better products.
