Trex Transcend® Lineage™ Composite Decking Recognized in Good Housekeeping’s 2023 Home Renovation Awards The latest innovation from Trex Company, Trex Transcend® Lineage™ decking, has been recognized in Good Housekeeping’s 2023 Home Renovation Awards in the Exterior Enhancements category. “Good Housekeeping has long been a trusted resource for homeowners looking to make their homes more beautiful, functional and sustainable, and represents the brass ring of product endorsements,” says Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing and ESG development for Trex, the world’s largest manufacturer of high-performance, wood-alternative decking and railing. “This award validates the superior performance of our decking and further elevates Trex as a leading provider of high-performance, low-maintenance and eco-friendly outdoor living solutions.” Representing Trex’s coolest decking yet – literally, Trex Transcend Lineage is engineered with heat-mitigating technology in the shell that reflects the sun to keep boards cooler than other composite decking offerings.* Available in four on-trend colors, this new product also features a refined aesthetic with subtle hues and elegant graining that delivers an unmatched natural appearance. Enhancing its appeal, Trex Transcend Lineage offers the look and feel of real wood, but without the environmental impact of deforestation. Boards are comprised of 95% recycled and reclaimed materials, including a mix of polyethylene plastic film and industrial wood scrap, making Lineage an environmentally friendly choice that outperforms and outlasts natural wood. This new line contributes to the nearly one billion pounds of upcycled materials used annually in the making of Trex decking. Furthermore, Trex uses a proprietary manufacturing process that is as green as its final product. Like all Trex decking, Lineage boards are engineered with a proprietary,

high-traffic formulation and ultra-durable integrated shell that resists stains, scratches and mold. They won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter like wood – and upkeep is hassle-free. No sanding, staining or painting is ever needed, and spills wash off easily with just soap and water. Trex Lineage boards are also backed by a 50-year limited warranty for added peace of mind. “The rigorous evaluation that our Lineage decking endured to earn this award is a testament to our commitment to providing homeowners with the best products on the market,” adds Adkins. “We are extremely proud to have earned this honor and appreciate the vote of confidence from the experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute.” The full list of winners can be found at www.goodhousekeeping.com/ home/renovation/a44870187/home-renovation-awards-2023/. To learn more about Trex Transcend Lineage, visit Trex.com. *Although Trex Transcend Lineage is designed to be cooler than most other composite decking products of a similar color, on a hot sunny day, it will get hot. On hot days, care should be taken to avoid extended contact between exposed skin and the deck surface, especially with young children and those with special needs.

Modern Mill, manufacturer of innovative wood alternative ACRE™, has been named Product Innovation of the Year (Americas) by Environmental Finance in their annual list of the Sustainable Companies for 2023. The Environmental Finance Sustainable Company Awards recognize leading corporations across all industries that are transforming their business practices to pave the way towards a net-zero future. The award seeks to shine a light on companies that are actively driving change in their approach to responsibility and sustainability. “We’re honored to be a part of this year’s list of sustainable companies,” says Kim Guimond, chief marketing officer at Modern Mill. “Our business model demonstrates that businesses can consider the environmental impact of their operations and by doing so achieve important business objectives, like high customer and employee retention, operational efficiencies, and shareholder value.” Modern Mill’s flagship product ACRE, tackles deforestation with its 100% tree-free makeup. It’s made from upcycled rice hulls, a form of agricultural waste, in a zero-waste manufacturing environment. It’s a circular product, recyclable, and provides LEED points for green building. According to the company, making the choice to use ACRE saved more than 10,000 acres of rainforest and 10,000 soft trees in 2023. They’ve upcycled more than three tons of rice hulls or more than garbage collected in the city of Cincinnati annually. “Modern Mill demonstrates innovation in terms of materials, manufacturing, and its environmental impact,” says one of Environmental Finance’s judges. “This seems to be a great product that is needed to transform the building industry and could help curb deforestation.” Learn more at modern-mill.com.

Reasons Why Wood Fencing is a Timeless Classic

MONTAGE

®

Ornamental Steel Fence

Wood fences have been a popular choice for homeowners for centuries, and for good reason. They offer a combination of beauty, functionality, and versatility that is hard to beat. Beitzell Fence, a family-owned business serving Northern Virginia, has been installing wood fences for over 30 years and their team has seen firsthand the timeless appeal they offer. “Wood fencing is a timeless classic that offers a host of benefits,” says Amy Beitzell, residential sales manager with Beitzell. “It remains one of the most popular choices for our customers.” Beitzell offers five reasons why wood fencing is a timeless classic: 1. Aesthetic Appeal. Wood fences are incredibly beautiful and can add a touch of elegance to any property. “The natural look of wood complements almost any landscape and can be customized to suit the property owner’s personal style,” says Beitzell. “Whether the preference is a traditional picket fence, a more modern horizontal design, or something entirely unique, wood fencing can be tailored to meet the desired aesthetic. 2. Durability. When properly maintained, wood fences can last for many years. Wood is a strong and durable material that can withstand the elements and resist damage from pests. “At Beitzell Fence, we use high-quality wood and professional installation techniques to ensure your fence stands the test of time,” says Beitzell. 3. Privacy. Wood fences offer a high level of privacy compared to other fencing options. They can be built to any height, and the solid panels prevent prying eyes from seeing into a yard. “This makes wood fencing an excellent choice for homeowners who value their privacy and want to create a secluded oasis in their backyard,” says Beitzell.

Install time just decreased by 30% Contact your salesperson to learn more.

4. Versatility. Wood is an incredibly versatile material that can be cut, shaped, and stained to your liking. “This means any fence project can be customized to meet any needs,” says Beitzell. “Whether the goal is a fence that matches the color of a house, one that features intricate designs, or one that serves a specific function, wood fencing can be easily adapted.” 5. Environmentally Friendly. Wood is a natural and renewable resource, making it an environmentally friendly choice for fencing. “At Beitzell Fence, we source our wood from sustainable sources and ensure that it is treated in an eco-friendly manner. This means the beauty and functionality of a wood fence can be enjoyed without worrying about its environmental impact.

SPECIAL SECTION

Why Staining Is Essential for Wood Fences Wood fences are a popular choice for homeowners looking to add a touch of beauty and privacy to their outdoor spaces. However, just like any other outdoor structure, wood fences are exposed to the elements and can deteriorate over time. That’s why it is essential to properly maintain and protect a wood fence, and one of the best ways to do this is by staining it. “Staining is a crucial step in protecting a wood fence from the damaging effects of the sun, rain, wind, and other environmental factors,” says Al Martins, director/owner of Fence Armor®. “Unlike paint, which forms a solid film on the surface of the wood, stain is designed to penetrate the wood fibers, providing an extra layer of protection against moisture and UV rays. This helps prevent the wood from warping, cracking, and fading, ensuring that your fence remains strong and beautiful for years to come.” Martins highlights additional benefits stain provides to wood fencing: Preserving the Natural Beauty Wood fences have a unique and natural beauty that can enhance the overall aesthetic of an outdoor space. However, over time, without proper care, the wood can become dull, weathered, and gray. Staining a wood fence can help preserve its natural beauty by enhancing the wood’s grain and highlighting its color. Whether you choose a clear stain that showcases the wood’s natural tones or a colored stain that adds a touch of personality, staining is the perfect finishing touch for a wood fence. Enhancing Durability Wood fences are exposed to various forms of weathering, such as moisture, mold, and insect damage. Staining a wood fence can significantly enhance its durability by creating a protective barrier that helps repel water, resist mold growth, and deter pests. Stain also helps to prevent wood rot, which can weaken the structure of the fence. Staining can extend the lifespan of a wood fence and save the property owner costly repairs or replacements. Preventing Damage In addition to protecting against environmental factors, stain also acts as a defense against physical damage. Wood fences are susceptible to scratches, dents, and marks caused by everyday activities, such as pets playing or children running around. Applying a stain creates a barrier that helps prevent these types of damage, keeping the fence looking pristine for longer. Maintaining Longevity A well-maintained wood fence can last for many years, providing privacy and security for a property. Staining a wood fence is an essential part of regular maintenance and helps to extend its longevity. Regularly applying stain can prevent the wood from drying out, splitting, or warping, which can happen over time if the fence is left unprotected. Martins says although there are many stains to choose from, not all stains offer the needed benefits of wood protection. “That’s why Fence Armor offers a range of high-quality stains specifically designed to protect and enhance wood fences. Our stains are formulated to provide long-lasting protection against UV rays, moisture, and other environmental factors. By using Fence Armor EXPERT Stains, you can ensure that your wood fence remains beautiful and durable throughout its lifespan.” He explains that Fence Armor EXPERT Stains penetrate deep into the wood, creating a strong bond that resists cracking, peeling, and fading. “The natural oils and resins in these stains help nourish the wood, preventing it from drying out or becoming brittle. This helps maintain the wood’s strength and flexibility, ensuring that your fence can withstand the elements and continue to protect your property for years to come.” Continued on pg 19

In addition to their protective qualities, Fence Armor EXPERT Stains come in a variety of colors, allowing for customization. Whether a natural, rustic look, or bold, modern aesthetic look is desired, Fence Armor has a stain that will suit the property’s style and complement any outdoor space. Fence Armor has launched a new online Stain Calculator to help contractors determine how much product it will take to stain their fence or deck project. The calculator allows users to input details like stain type, length, fence material, and environmental factors to estimate the amount needed for stain fading. This innovative tool provides customized stain estimates so homeowners can plan more accurately. When paired with quality staining, Martins says the Fence Armor Post Guards and Fence Armor CAP CLAW™ Post Caps combine to form a robust defense system for your wooden fence. “These accessories not only bolster the fence’s resilience but also significantly extend its lifespan, ultimately sparing you the expenses and hassles associated with frequent repairs and replacements. It’s essential to keep in mind that by investing in these protective additions, you’re not only maintaining the fence’s inherent charm but also guaranteeing that it continues to serve as a steadfast and dependable feature on your property for many years ahead.” “Staining a wood fence is not just about enhancing its appearance; it is a vital step in protecting and prolonging its life for your customers,” adds Martins. “By applying a high-quality stain, you can preserve the natural beauty of a wood fence, enhance its durability, prevent damage, and ensure its longevity.” Learn more at FenceArmor.com.

Alta Forest Products Announces Pro-Finish Oil-Stained Fence Pickets

In the world of home improvement and outdoor living, few things can rival the natural beauty of a well-maintained wooden fence, that’s why the demand for oil-stained fencing has continued to grow every season. Oil-stained fencing itself has a long history, but the process of staining those fence boards hasn’t evolved much over the years. Traditional staining methods often involve weeks of dry time, manual labor, and the inherent mess that comes with it all. Third-party, large-scale custom staining can eliminate some of those concerns but is also only available in a few select markets. “Our team at Alta Forest Products knew there had to be a better way, and with our partners, Wood Defender, we’ve found it in our patent-pending oil staining process,” says Joe Penrod, product manager with Alta. “Pro-Finish offers a factory applied, streamlined and cost-effective solution to oil staining.” that is also available nationwide. Penrod explains that Pro-Finish isn’t just another oil stain. “Unlike other staining methods, Pro-Finish happens at the factory, where a proprietary process coats each picket with a high-quality oil stain. The precise method behind this is confidential, but the results are undeniable - consistent, professional-quality staining that enhances the appearance of your fence and extends its lifespan.” Pro-Finish goes beyond aesthetics, offering practicality and efficiency as well. Penrod details how the product makes a significant impact:

Cost-Effectiveness: Pro-Finish eliminates the additional freight associated with sending product to and from stain facilities, and the factory application process ensures consistent, long-lasting results. Variety and Choice: Pro-Finish doesn’t just offer convenience; it offers choice. Select from Alta’s Western Red Cedar or Douglas Fir pickets. Additionally, three color options – Cedar Tone, Oxford Brown, and Leatherwood – allow you to select a solution that works best for your project. Enhancing Wooden Fences: The Power of Stains and Coatings

When it comes to fence installation and maintenance, wooden fences continue to stand the test of time as a popular choice among homeowners. However, to ensure longevity and customer satisfaction, the importance of staining and sealing wooden fences cannot be overstated. “Stains and coatings add value for fencing businesses,” explains Caleb Roth, CEO and founder of EXPERT Professional Wood Care, a leader in restorative wood techniques and products. “Partnering with expert professional wood care specialists can be a game-changer for a fence company’s operations.” Wooden fences are both functional and aesthetic, providing privacy and curb appeal to homeowners. However, they are exposed to various elements, such as rain, sun and temperature fluctuations, which can lead to premature deterioration. Staining and sealing serve as a protective shield, preventing moisture penetration, UV damage and decay. “When you stain a wooden fence, you are essentially extending its life span,” Roth says. “This not only enhances the overall appearance but also reduces maintenance costs for your customers. A wellmaintained fence reflects positively on your company, building trust and increasing customer satisfaction.” Among the various stain options available, penetrating oil-based stains have gained popularity for several reasons. These stains penetrate deep into the wood fibers, providing superior protection against moisture and UV rays. Unlike film-forming stains, which can peel and crack over time, penetrating stains allow the wood to breathe, preventing unsightly peeling and blistering.

24

NOVEMBER 2023 | FENCE NEWS USA

“Contractors often prefer penetrating oil-based stains for their ease of application and long-lasting results,” he says. “These stains are less likely to require frequent reapplication, reducing maintenance efforts and costs for both the contractor and their customers.” Staining and sealing wooden fences go beyond protection; they enhance the aesthetics of the wood. A beautifully stained fence not only adds value to a property, but also improves the overall curb appeal. “Homeowners take pride in their well-maintained fences, which can lead to referrals and repeat business for your company,” Roth says. “Offering staining services can be a lucrative revenue stream for your fencing business. Many homeowners are willing to invest in fence maintenance, and by expanding your services to include staining and sealing, you tap into this market, increasing profitability.” Because time is money for everyone, including fence contractors, pre-staining lumber before installation can significantly streamline operations. This approach not only saves time on-site but also ensures a consistent and high-quality finish. Customers appreciate the reduced disruption and quicker installation times. Additionally, pre-staining lumber allows the fencing contractor to control the staining process in ideal conditions, resulting in a more durable and attractive finish. “We partner with contractors so they can deliver a quality product,” Roth explains. “Whether they are staining in the field, pre-staining, or engaging in wood restoration, we can provide the products, knowledge and support so their customers receive quality products that will stand the test of time.” For more information, visit EXPERTWoodCare.com.

Choosing the Right Treated Lumber For outdoor projects, especially fencing, it’s important to use treated lumber appropriate for outdoor use. Do your wood recommendations and uses align with what’s best for your customers’ projects? ProWood is known for quality treated lumber, and within the last year, they’ve taken it a step further by offering proper education and awareness for dealers, contractors, and homeowners. Grace Bilbrough, director of marketing for ProWood, provides insight into the different types of treated lumber and how utilizing this knowledge can help you build a reputable reputation. Benefits of Pressure Treating When wood is pressure treated, the preservative is driven deep into the wood, rather than sitting on the surface like other treatments. In the long run, this treatment provides protection against rot and decay, ensuring the lumber will stand the test of time and giving confidence to dealers and installers alike. “ProWood offers a range of pressure-treated fence components that are rigorously tested and certified by third parties to ensure each product meets the standards represented on each end tag,” says Bilbrough. Using the Correct Category Designations Whether you are installing a fence with components or pre-assembled panels, Bilbrough says it’s essential to know that not all treated lumber is treated equally. There are unique applications for each level of treatment and choosing the correct one can ensure a longlasting project. The AWPA Standards provide treated wood standards that support the environment and longevity of the project in commercial or residential applications. They themselves do not enforce these standards, but federal, state, and local building code laws often reference them. The AWPA Use Category system allows contractors and homeowners to comprehend these standards by sorting types of treated wood into appropriate use categories. ProWood offers lumber in these categories: UC3B: ABOVE GROUND Ideal for use in light-duty situations where lumber will not be in contact with moisture or the ground, like fence pickets.

28

NOVEMBER 2023 | FENCE NEWS USA

UC4A: GROUND CONTACT Use in general-use situations where the wood may contact moisture, the ground, or be installed in a manner that subjects the wood to comparable ground contact conditions. Examples may include, but are not limited to, posts, beams, and ledger boards. UC4B: CRITICAL STRUCTURAL This set of conditions, which bears resemblance to UC4A, is commonly employed in critical structural applications that are exposed to a range of high-moisture environments. LIGHT DUTY Covers internal standards and not meant for critical structural uses and doesn’t conform to AWPA/ESR Standards. Product examples may include, but are not limited to, lattice and pickets. END TAG EDUCATION In 2022, ProWood introduced a new end tag design that includes the use of category designations to help installers select the right lumber for their project, protecting the dealer, installer, and the homeowner. “Dealers often only stock ground-contact-treated lumber to eliminate confusion and ensure their customers are covered regardless of application, and now, dealers can offer a wider variety for more applications,” explains Bilbrough. Installers now have a wider range of options to choose from, making it easier for them to find the right lumber that provides both value and assurance for their project.

“Your reputation as a service provider is everything, and understanding the variety of wood treatments can ensure you become the goto choice for treated fencing,” says Bilbrough. Erik Dunn trying his hand at spraying during class spray demo. Wood Defender Training Class, November 2013.

A Synergy of Good Business The partnership between Wood Defender and Dunn Fence isn’t merely that of a manufacturer and its customer. Theirs is a shared vision upheld by hard work, an unwavering dedication to quality and service, and a commitment to doing good business. Located in Mansfield, Texas, Wood Defender is a division of Standard Paints, a family-owned business founded in 1952. “The chemists at our Standard Paints’ laboratory are dedicated to discovering long-lasting and easy-to-use products based on stringent specifications for formula accuracy, product consistency and quality control,” explains Laurel McEuen, director of marketing at Wood Defender. Dunn Fence, established in 2013, is in the Woodlands, Tomball and Spring, Texas area near Houston. This father-son business is focused on fence installation of all types along with wood fence staining and sealing and iron or wood fence painting. Finding a compatible partner for their wood fence staining process was crucial. The companies are united by a pursuit of excellence, holding close the belief that with resilience, innovation, and the best products and support systems, success is not only possible, but also inevitable. Wood Defender, recognized for its premium-quality wholesale stain manufacturing, has a history of extending a hand to new businesses and staining hopefuls through their monthly training classes. “For as long as we’ve manufactured stain, the classes have been the cornerstone of our commitment to building the fence industry by supporting the growth of aspiring entrepreneurs,” McEuen says. One of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the difference it makes is through the story of customers like Dunn Fence. The now thriving business, steered by Erik Dunn and his father Patrick, Dunn Fence began as an idea during Erik’s college days. “We started with power washing, and transitioned into staining fences when the demand arose,” he recalls. Erik’s vision and willingness to work diligently is an example of not just the entrepreneurial spirit of the fence industry, but the driving spirit of the American dream; a dream propelled by the desire to do your best, a concern for others’ shared success and growth, and a foundation built on traditional values. It’s also the philosophy of Wood Defender; making them a natural partner. Erik and Patrick Dunn attending Wood Defender Training Class, November 2013.

SPECIAL Continued fromSECTION pg 30 In the early days of business, the challenges and inefficiencies Erik experienced with various products led him straight to Wood Defender’s door. “I found there was a niche in the market, so I went online, and I found Wood Defender. I told my dad we needed to check into this company.” The two attended a Wood Defender’s training class in 2013. They quickly discovered a network of support. They were extremely impressed by the hands-on demonstration of the products and resonating values shared by the two companies. The training experience transformed their business. “They began the class with prayer,” says Patrick Dunn. “The biggest eyeopener was when they took us outside to demonstrate the ease of application. I don’t think there’s a better applicable product than Wood Defender.” Erik also noticed the ease of application and time-saving qualities of Wood Defender’s products, which soon became the backbone in their toolkit. “It’s not just about the initial installation,” Erik says. “The real value unfolds during reapplication, saving time and money, underscoring the commitment to delivering enduring quality to our clients.” They’ve found that clients return, satisfied with the performance and ready for another project; just as contractors continue to rely on Wood Defender. In time, Dunn Fence was not just staining fences but constructing them, its team expanding with their growing reputation of satisfaction. With the invaluable skills and insights gained from Wood Defender, Dunn Fence experienced exponential growth, earning them recognition

from popular conservative talk show host, Michael Berry. This endorsement has marked a pivotal moment, driving their expansion and inspiring them to build an exceptional team dedicated to providing unparalleled service; a team who they credit with much of their success. Erik says diligence and resilience are key factors in their entrepreneurial success. “It takes a lot of work, but it is all going to pay off. You must continuously work hard, ensure that you’re being the best you can be in each moment, and that’s how you’re going to succeed.” The inspiring story of Dunn Fence is just one of the examples of how the team at Wood Defender is a mentor to small businesses. “Our training classes are more than day-long how-to sessions, they help build dreams,” explains McEuen. “They provide not only essential knowledge but ongoing support for entrepreneurs. The synergy is not coincidental but a seamless alignment of vision, values and relentless pursuit of excellence, crafting an inspiring and uniquely American narrative.” With their recent expansion and recognition, Dunn Fence continues to blaze a path, and stands as a testament to the steadfast support and invaluable training provided by Wood Defender. Together, these companies not only build fences but the path for future entrepreneurs to realize their visions, one training class and one fence business at a time. Southern Pine: The Sustainable Building Material for Fences Founded in 1915, the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) represents Southern Pine products and services around the globe, managing a comprehensive product promotion program. SFPA’s mission is to advance the Southern Pine lumber industry, promote the use of member products and facilitate the exchange of information and ideas. The team at SFPA provides an overview of the sustainability of the lumber they represent. Wood, including Southern Pine, is the only mainstream building material to have third-party certification in place to verify it is sourced from sustainably managed resources, ranking it as a top sustainable building material. Initially launched to combat tropical deforestation, certification strategies have become popular tools for forest products companies to promote social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and the sustainability of forest products. Southern Pine forests, specifically, are some of the most productive and sustainable timberlands in the world, capturing large amounts of carbon from the air and storing it in lumber used every day. And, interestingly, more trees are planted than harvested each year! Why Is Southern Pine So Sustainable? Southern Pine products require less energy to manufacture – meaning fewer greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide (CO2). Trees use CO2 to grow, changing greenhouse gases into the building blocks we know as wood. That’s why wood products are increasingly being recognized as tools to combat climate change. The Low Carbon Solution Forests are carbon sinks. Second only to the oceans, our forests are the world’s most important carbon sinks. Each tree absorbs around one ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) and produces around three-quarters of a ton of oxygen for every cubic meter’s growth. Managed forests are more efficient than carbon sinks. Immature trees grow quickly and absorb CO2 efficiently. As they mature, their rate of growth and CO2 absorption slows, until eventually the tree dies, rots, and releases the carbon it has stored into the atmosphere. In managed forests, mature trees are harvested and replaced with vigorous young trees. A good market for wood products provides the financial incentive for forest owners to invest for the future.

Wood products are carbon stores. When a tree is harvested, much of its carbon is stored in the product it has been used to make. Because the harvested tree has been replaced, the carbon stored in the wood product is a bonus, which is why wood products are often said to be “carbon negative.” Wood products are 50% carbon by weight. The carbon benefit can be extended. Different wood products have different life spans, but the durability of wood means timber used in construction can last a lifetime and longer. At the end of their life, wood products can be recycled or used as biomass fuel. Sustainability Lifecycle • Sustainable Resources: Wood products are produced from trees, a naturally renewable resource that only needs water and sunlight – both naturally produced and free resources – to grow. • Responsible Manufacturing: Waste is virtually eliminated when trees are used to make wood products. Bark, trims, and sawdust are used as an energy source to help power wood production facilities. It takes far less energy and fossil fuels to produce wood products than to manufacture concrete and steel. • Quality Construction: As a building material, wood offers a unique combination of benefits, including strength, affordability, ease-of-use, and environmental superiority. • Long Service Life: The durability of wood products contributes to the long life of a home. Wood products also store carbon, reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. • Renovation Upgrade: The flexibility of wood makes renovating a home easy and affordable. Wood is builder-friendly, as well as environmentally friendly. Wood also enhances the aesthetic value of a home when used as flooring, cabinetry, furniture, and molding. • Recycle & Renew: At the end of their initial service life, wood products are easily recycled for other uses. Wood contributes fewer greenhouse gas emissions than nonrenewable steel and concrete. Learn more valuable facts about wood and the environment at sfpa.org.

The Popularity of Horizontal Fencing Classic Style with Modern Look Horizontal fencing, characterized by its horizontal orientation of fence boards or slats, has a history that spans several decades. In the more distant past, this style of fencing was favored for its strength and longevity. It was a simple structure that could quickly enclose a property and keep it secure. Though these are still key elements, this type of fencing has evolved into a modern and stylish alternative to vertical fencing. This evolution can be traced through various architectural and design movements, beginning in the mid-20th century. Today’s homeowners appreciate the sleek, modern look horizontal fencing delivers. Horizontal lines have been adopted in numerous aspects of modern design. From furniture to fencing they provide a signature look. To better understand why horizontal fences look so appealing, it’s important to understand some basics of art composition. • Horizontal lines are used to expand spaces. • They run parallel to the earth and show a continuation of landscaping. • Horizontal lines are at rest and peaceful. • Horizontal lines are combined with vertical lines to build stable shapes. • A break in a horizontal line can create a focal point. “As with any design trend, the old becomes new again and reinterpreted in ways to make it feel fresh,” says Brian Gonzales, chief operating officer (COO) of J & W Lumber. “Horizontal fencing offers many benefits, both structurally and aesthetically, and can be customized to fit any property.” Gonzales highlights a few factors leading to the resurgence in popularity of horizontal fencing: Availability of Different Wood Species. There is a range of hardwoods and softwoods to choose from to create a variety of looks, each which can be personalized to complement individual home aesthetics. Western Red Cedar or Redwood are the most popular softwood lumber selections due to the natural beauty they possess. Additionally, both are sustainable, versatile woods that are durable and easy to work with. Ipe, Mangaris Red, Garapa, and Borneo Mahogany offer superior hardwood options that elevate the fence design and provide a modern aesthetic. Create Appearance of a Larger Space. Horizontal fencing can make a yard appear bigger. The line of sight takes the eye from end-to-end versus straight down to the ground as with vertical fencing. The clean lines serve as a solid base for any landscaping project and/or when creating a beautiful backyard living area. Smaller spaces seem more expansive, adding to the overall appeal. Customizable, Modern Looks. By using multiple board dimensions, there are a variety of patterns to further customize horizontal fencing. Rather than stick to the same lumber size, many opt to alternate 1x2s with 1x4s or 1x8s for a contemporary look. Changing the spacing between boards, staggering seams or alternating wood species, also adds design creativity. Current trends also include vibrant fencing colors offset with solid black posts, alternating stains to create a contrasting pattern, varying levels of fencing (from high to low or low to high), and accessories like garden boxes, top rail, lattice, or gates to complete the effect. “Whether you’re looking for a simple board-on-board design or something more intricate and eye-catching, there are plenty of horizontal wood fence ideas to consider,” says Gonzales. “This versatility of this style allows a classic to be made modern, over and over again.” Learn more at jwlumber.com. 36

3 Unique Ideas for Wood Fencing at Businesses Privacy and security are two of the most popular reasons why businesses utilize fencing; however, there are many other – possibly surprising – ways to utilize commercial fencing in addition to setting up a perimeter. In fact, with a little bit of imagination, wood fencing can transform the whole aesthetics of a commercial property. According to Steve Pettey, owner of Atlantic Fence & Supply in Hanover Maryland, there are many reasons to choose wood fencing for your commercial needs, including: Aesthetically pleasing A wood fence can add curb appeal Customizable Variety of wood type and fence style, as well as paint and stain choices Cost More affordable than many other types of fencing Easy to repair You can simply repair one post, gate, etc. without having to dismantle the whole fence

“Beyond defining property lines, wood fencing can help protect and improve various aspects of a commercial property,” says Pettey. “Once you start thinking outside the box, you’ll find that wood fencing offers multiple benefits for many smaller projects around your business.” He provides a few suggestions: Enclose an HVAC system. If your business occupies a large space, it’s likely that you also have a large HVAC system. Seeing a large air conditioning unit on the side of your building can be a bit of an eyesore. However, wood fencing is an ideal choice to enclose an HVAC system. A simple 8-foot-high pressuretreated pine fence can hide your HVAC system. A shadow box style is a great choice to allow plenty of air flow to prevent your system from overheating. HVAC systems are a valuable investment, and in addition to hiding the system from view, the fence will also protect your system from damage from animals or from property crime.

Protect electrical equipment. A wood fence is a simple way to protect electrical equipment such as electrical meters, utility boxes and generators. In this case, a 10-foot-high solid board fence is a good option. Choose pressure-treated custom boards for a long-lasting fence. Hide recycling and waste bins. Another unique way to use wood fencing is to hide garbage bins, recycling bins, and dumpsters. These receptacles, by necessity, must stay outside of a business, but can be unsightly. A wood fence with a gate serves a dual purpose of hiding the bins from the view of customers and potential customers, and also keeping nocturnal animals from rooting through the containers and leaving behind a big clean-up job. “These types of projects are typically quick and simple but provide a long-lasting positive impact for the businesses we work with,” adds Pettey. It’s the latest example of how the company is continuing to work towards its ambition of reducing carbon emissions across the full value chain by 50% by 2030. “Sustainability is critical for all of us and helping customers to reduce energy is one of the many ways we can work with – and for – them in order to meet our shared ambitions,” says Jeff Jirak, director of AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business. “We’re proud to be the first in the industry to introduce this kind of openly available online resource,” he continues. “It will enable us to create better awareness and enable customers to really get to grips with the potential energy and carbon reductions that can be achieved with low cure powder coatings.” Jirak adds that in order to understand the full range of possible benefits for individual users, further details of customer-specific situations would be required. To make using the tool as easy as possible, the calculator – currently only available in Europe – is supported by a detailed guide, which helps customers better understand how even making small changes in the powder coating process can have a big impact in terms of becoming more energy efficient. These include checking for leakages in compressed air systems, improving insulation and ensuring all process equipment is regularly serviced and maintained. Customers also receive expert support from Interpon’s technical service team. “We’re fully committed to reducing the environmental impact of our products and processes while creating opportunities to make improvements across the value chain,” says Remco Maassen van den Brink, marketing director for the company’s Powder Coatings business. “The energy savings calculator and guide are just the latest example of how we continue to help customers make informed decisions that can help them run a more sustainable business.” The energy savings calculator is available at: powder.interpon.com/truesustainability/energy-saving/.

The MARK of

®

TOUGHNESS

The Powder Coated Tough trademark (the Mark) was developed by The Powder Coating Institute in response to research of consumers and the industry. The research indicates that a product’s finish is very important to consumers when making a purchase decision. Consumers want products that are durable, attractive, scratch-resistant, and long lasting. And when they learn that a powder coated finish provides these attributes and more, this is the finish they want. Due to a significant shift in recent years in the world’s interest in environmental friendliness and carbon footprint of the products they use, the Powder Coated Tough Mark logo underwent a redesign to reflect this trend, as it is one of the most important benefits of powder coating. The logo continues to reflect the durability of powder coating, but now also emphasizes the environmental sustainability it represents: stronger, greener, better. PCI reports that the powder coating environmental impact benefits compared to other coating methods are many, including: Negligible VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and HAPs (hazardous air pollutants) Free: Powder coatings contain negligible solvents and therefore emit negligible, if any, polluting VOCs into the atmosphere. Liquid paint applications expose workers to noxious odors. Small liquid applicators must get permitting for the release of VOCs and larger applicators use thermal oxiders on their exhaust which increases their carbon footprint.

Less Exhaust: Powder coating is a clean process, allowing exhaust air from the coating booth to be returned to the plant, and less oven air is exhausted to the outside. Heating and cooling costs are eliminated for make-up air and the cost for maintaining oven temperatures is minimized. Reusable Overspray: Powder overspray can be retrieved and reused within a reclaim system. No Costly Waste Disposal Equipment: Unused powder can be reclaimed and returned to a hopper for recirculation through the system, with negligible waste. In liquid operations, PPE and booth protector materials are considered hazardous and require special disposal. Now, when consumers see the Powder Coated Tough Mark on a product, they’ll know that the product is a good value — it’s durable, attractive, friendly to the environment and will last them a long time. By using the Powder Coated Tough Mark on their products and in their advertising and promotional materials, companies will clearly identify themselves as a leader and a producer of powder coated products. Their products will be easily recognizable by consumers as having a powder coated finish. SPECIAL SECTION

Bekaert Proves Bezinal® Coating is the Superior Choice for Coastal Areas Because installing fence is an investment in time and money, it’s important to build a fence that lasts. But certain environments can be harsh on wire fencing. How can you increase the lifespan of a fence in an area like this? By choosing the right coating. “Coastal environments dramatically shorten the lifespan of a wire fence,” explains Keith Taylor, technical support manager with Bekaert, a world market and technology leader in steel wire transformation and coating technologies. “This is because the air and soil in a coastal climate has a greater quantity of salt, which causes the rapid deterioration of steel products. Anytime steel comes into contact with salt, it’s going to rust very quickly if you don’t have the right coating on your product.” Bekaert set out to create a solution to this problem with their exclusive Bezinal® coating. Bezinal is a coating that combines zinc and aluminum. In salt spray tests, Bezinal-coated wires resisted corrosion two to six times longer in heavily corrosive areas. The protective coating on a wire can make or break the longevity of a fence. For example, studies show a fence with the most basic type of coating (Class 1 galvanized) lasts two years or less in a coastal area. Coatings prevent rust and corrosion because they contain an active protective barrier for the wire. Sometimes this barrier includes additional metals, like zinc and aluminum. The barrier will wear down first to protect the steel wire underneath. “On the coast, the most corrosion-resistant coatings available are needed,” says Taylor. “The reason Bezinal is so effective compared to hot-dip zinc galvanized wires is because of the zinc aluminum combination. The aluminum oxides create a high-quality coating layer that can withstand harsh elements and not deteriorate the wire.” Bekaert conducted a real-life field test that compared Class 3 Galvanized (zinc) to two Bezinal coating options: standard Bezinal and full-coat Bezinal. The goal was to confirm Bezinal as the better coating option for wire fencing installed in a coastal environment. “Numerous laboratory tests prove the effectiveness of Bezinal, but we wanted to conduct further research in an actual coastal setting,” says Taylor. To conduct the study, the Bekaert team installed three fences with different coatings on a ranch about three miles from the Gulf Coast near Port Mansfield, Texas. Here is a breakdown of the three fences installed:

BREAKDOWN OF THE THREE FENCES INSTALLED: • The first fence was a 9 ga S knot wire fence with 6 ga edge wires with a Class 3 coating of zinc. This is a very common coating choice. However, the typical life of a Class 3 fence on the coast is less than seven years. • The second fence Bekaert installed was a 12.5 ga fixed knot wire fence with a Bezinal (zinc and aluminum) Class 40 coating. • The third fence was a 12.5 ga fixed knot with a full coat Bezinal Class 80 coating.

The results? Bezinal coating outperforms Class 3 coating. Taylor says there was a noticeable difference even one year after installation. At this point, the Class 3 wire was whitening and pitting while both Bezinal-coated fences were not. By year two, the zinc-coated fence was showing signs of rust, the coating was starting to peel off and the fence felt rough to the touch. Both Bezinal-coated fences showed little to no whitening or pitting and remained smooth to the touch.

44

NOVEMBER 2023 | FENCE NEWS USA

Now that the project is five years in, Taylor says the fences are showing one key takeaway: Class 3 coating is not the ideal coating choice for coastal areas if fence longevity and performance is the goal. “Since being installed five years ago, both Bezinal-coated fences show minimal to no signs of rusting. The Class 3 fence, however, has a significant amount of red rust on both sides of the fence. The zinc coating that is left is transparent with the steel surface underneath starting to show. Once the coating on the wire starts to break down, so does the wire and fence. The longevity of a fence is reduced, and the wire becomes brittle.” Bekaert has visited the test site annually to document and photograph the fences. Below is a breakdown of what their observations were each year. Learn more at fencing.bekaert.com.

Kebony Adds Two Distribution Partners

International Wood Products (IWP) and Hardwoods Inc. will jointly handle distribution of Kebony’s dually modified decking and wood cladding products throughout Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. This brings 20 additional distribution centers to the region. “These two distributors have deep roots in the Pacific Northwest, having been founded there,” says Andy Hehl, North America director for Kebony. “Both have grown into wood-products sales powerhouses throughout the West. We’re very excited to have them representing Kebony in this growing market.” International Wood Products as it’s known today began in 1994. In the beginning IWP focused on the distribution of commodity items and later on a range of both commodity and specialty products. This commitment to a diverse product mix was a strategic initiative in 1995 and continues today, 28 years later. “IWP is excited to promote and sell Kebony at all five of our locations servicing the entire West Coast. Kebony adds to our growing portfolio of high-quality products that value innovation and sustainability,” IWP president Josh Hamilton says. “It supports our commitment to working with our customers to provide solutions, grow market share, and increase return on investment.” Hardwoods, part of ADENTRA’s North American distribution network, operates 32 distribution centers strategically located across the United States and Canada. Hardwoods is uniquely positioned to provide customers with immediate access to a large, diverse product portfolio, and vendors a broad, significant channel to market. “We are excited to partner with Kebony across our network of 15 western distribution centers,” says Nick Smith, regional vice president, Hardwoods West. “In view of the increased demand for branded, specifiable, sustainable, and durable wood products in outdoor living applications, Kebony is a key addition to Hardwoods’ ‘Wood for Outdoor Living’ program. Kebony strategically aligns with our continued growth in this segment.” Learn more at us.kebony.com.

John Eichenlaub PRESIDENT OF FENCE AND MECHANICAL WITH WHEATLAND

With 20 years in the fencing industry, John Eichenlaub’s resume is filled with a variety of skills, from production manager and sales to former COO at Builders Fence Company, and now president of Fence and Mechanical with Wheatland Tube, a subsidiary of Zekelman Industries. His constant driver is a commitment to excellence within the fencing industry. YOUR 20 YEARS IN THE FENCING INDUSTRY UNDERSCORES YOUR DEDICATION TO THE INDUSTRY. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE FENCING COMMUNITY? Without question, “community” is the key word. I have had several mentors throughout my time in the industry helping me to grow. There are many others who had a direct impact on me without ever knowing. In general, people in the fence community support the success of our industry. We have no shortage of folks volunteering with associations, committees and schools. They lift us all up. I am blessed to have been a part of this community. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A CAREER IN THE FENCING INDUSTRY? I did not choose the industry, per se. I had an opportunity in manufacturing security products following the events of 9/11, driven heavily by applications in the military and homeland defense. With the support from some amazing people, we had great success over a period of a few years. As those situations calmed, I was approached to be a part of sales. Here again, others recognized my potential and opened the door to the larger industry. I often joked that I was tricked into sales; while that may be true, the fact remains that friends and colleagues helped me maximize my potential. THINKING BACK TO YOUR FIRST FEW YEARS IN YOUR CAREER, WHAT WERE A FEW THINGS THAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT THE FENCING INDUSTRY? The scale of the industry surprised me when I was younger. Think about the average teenager contemplating life after high school. How many of those young people even recognize our industry? Over the years, we have seen many accomplished professionals join our efforts from other industries. Many had trepidation when they began their new journey, but most stayed on and are contributing every day. I am happy to witness the industry transition successfully to a new generation of leadership. I have often commented that my generation would be transitional. Many of our great organizations were built by strong individuals and families. Unfortunately, all organizations must face the future with new leaders. We are witnessing a transition to modern management methodologies, and I know the industry will continue to grow under these new leaders.

56

NOVEMBER 2023 | FENCE NEWS USA

WHAT QUALITIES OR INITIATIVES HELP FENCING COMPANIES REMAIN VIABLE? To produce products and get them in the hands of clients, teamwork is required to build success. Our industry doesn’t place much focus on disruptive products. We are very focused on solving problems. We attack problems and opportunities at the installation level and from the consumer’s point of view. This involves listening to the customer, something all of us work towards in fencing. WHEATLAND TUBES IS A LEADING PRODUCER OF CHAIN LINK FRAMEWORK. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO STAY AT THE TOP? Our position is the result of focusing on improvement. We placed a renewed focus on this industry five years ago and built a team that would bring results. Almost all our efforts are related to the best possible experience for our customers. Many organizations focus on being competitive and this can lead to a reactive position. Wheatland does not focus on what our competition is doing daily. We want to make it easy for our customers to conduct their business. We certainly have our challenges. Recent world events have impacted our plans due to supply chain delays. Several months of intense effort remain for us to achieve our promises to the community. Regardless, our focus is always to be a leader in customer service. Fortunately, our facility in Rochelle, Illinois is beginning to produce great results and we have broken ground on our new facility in Blytheville, Arkansas. We are excited to share the opportunities that these state-of-the-art facilities will bring to the industry. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Honestly, my team. They are the folks working directly with our customers every day. I want them all to be successful. I can’t set their future for them, but I am driven to facilitate their opportunities. I am thrilled to see teammates from prior organizations have successful growth and I hope the same for everyone I work with today. Rarely does a career grow when the daily tasks are left unattended, or customers’ needs are not addressed. It is important I exhibit these traits and encourage them daily. Any pride I feel from my career is generated from the growth I see in my team.

WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU HAD KNOWN EARLIER IN YOUR CAREER? Your box of perception is your prison. I spent many years driven by metrics and ignoring opportunity. I certainly never envisioned working in sales or living in many locations across the country. Find and listen to mentors. Ensure you learn more than technical skills from the people supporting you. ARE YOU IN THE PLACE YOU ENVISIONED YOURSELF TO BE WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED YOUR CAREER? Not at all. I never expected to expand beyond manufacturing in my hometown of Delaware, Ohio. My limited vision constrained my goals and potential. I never would have imagined the opportunities that were truly available to me. I needed intervention from mentors to open my eyes and the support of my wife and family to grow. Most importantly, I needed to recognize and promote the success of those around me. A rising tide lifts all ships. WHO ARE A FEW BUSINESS LEADERS YOU ADMIRE AND WHY? I specifically came to Wheatland Tube because I admire Barry Zekelman. I had the opportunity to spend a couple of hours with him as a customer. He listened intently to my concerns and expressed a proactive response. I knew I wanted to be a part of his team and continue to believe in his vision. Business leaders generally tend to disappointment nowadays. There are many traits I appreciate, but I think many compromise their vision to accommodate media or public perception. I could talk for hours about people who have helped and inspired me in fencing. Two of the leaders I admire in our industry today are Andrea Hogan and Barry Marrs. Obviously, they continue to grow their organizations with determination, but they also have great passion for the success of others. They take the time to participate in industry committees and bring their insight to the benefit of everyone in our community.

Essential Tools for Storm and Disaster Cleanup Natural disasters often leave behind a devastating aftermath marked by a trail of destruction and scattered debris that litters the landscape and creates significant issues for landowners. Clearing vegetation and trees left behind by storms, floods and forest fires requires the right equipment to facilitate the restoration of land to its natural state. “If you’re in the disaster recovery business or manage storm and fire clean up, you need equipment that can cut, shred, mulch, and process downed trees, broken branches, and scorched vegetation,” says Matt Nelson, director of development for Diamond Mowers, a leading manufacturer of industrial mowing, mulching and brush cutting equipment for the municipal, skid-steer and excavator markets. The following are some must-have tools Nelson recommends for landowners, farmers, ranchers, and contractors engaged in disaster cleanup, fire prevention and recovery.

MULCHERS Following severe weather or fire, the land can be cluttered with hazardous trees and brush, necessitating the ut8lization of a disc or drum mulcher’s powerful processing and rotation speeds, ideal for large mulch and brush management applications. Engineered to act like a flywheel, the distinctive disc mulcher design combines stored energy with hydraulic power to enable operators to cut and mulch trees and brush in their path while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency. Conversely, drum mulchers get their name from their cylindrical, drum-like shape. These robust land clearing attachments shred small trees and brush with a forward spinning motion; a quality that makes them great for quick brush and undergrowth removal. “By mulching downed vegetation and debris, you can return the materials and nutrients back to the ground, preparing the land for replanting and new growth,” explains Nelson. Diamond Mowers offers the Disc Mulcher Pro X, which is compatible with standard and high-flow hydraulic skid-steers and is available in 48” and 60” cutting widths to slice through trees and brush up to 14” in diameter and shred material up to 6” in diameter. For heavy-duty land reclamation projects, the Excavator Disc Mulcher Pro X is available in 36” and 48” cutting widths and can process material up to 12” in diameter. Additionally, the new Disc Mulcher Belt Drive Pro X couples a belt drive with a two-speed hydraulic motor to increase torque and disc speed, allowing professional mulching contractors and other high-volume mulchers in land clearing and vegetation and forestry management to finish the job in less time and recover more quickly when processing materials up to 14” in diameter. Furthermore, Diamond’s drum mulchers in open and depth control styles are compatible with standard and high-flow skid-steers and excavators. These attachments can continuously mulch material up to 9” in diameter and are available in 60” and 72” sizes. For mid-excavator users, the Excavator Drum Mulcher DC Pro X tackles mulching or brush clearing with power and precision and effectively cuts back and processes unwanted vegetation, making it ideal for land clearing and vegetation management. “Unlike other land-clearing techniques, mulching doesn’t cause disturbance to the soil, which is vital for reducing and aiding in water conservation by preventing moisture loss,” adds Nelson. “Employing a disc or drum mulcher can improve soil fertility and deliver essential nutrients that will serve future vegetation.” 58

NOVEMBER 2023 | FENCE NEWS USA

STUMP GRINDER Another indispensable tool for individuals involved in disaster cleanup and prevention is a stump grinder. Essential for removing stumps after trees have been broken, burnt, or carried away by strong winds, fire, or flooding, this tool uses a rotating cutting disc that mulches the stump into small pieces. Diamond offers two wheel-based options for use with skid-steer carriers: • Miller Stump Grinder – this attachment allows the operator to cut stumps up to 36” in diameter without ever moving the carrier. The 26”, 6-way grinding wheel features swing, lift and telescoping functions that allow users to process a stump while the loader is parked in one position, reducing the risk of soil or turf damage, and making it an ideal solution for arborists or where aesthetics are a significant consideration. This option also features a chain guard that helps protect the grinder and operator from flying debris, along with a convenient push blade that effortlessly fills in holes created while clearing stumps below ground level. • Reflex Stump Grinder – an excellent choice for rural grinding applications, tree farms, and land clearing operations, the Reflex Stump Grinder uses the skid-steer’s lift arm to position its heavy-duty wheel in the stump before driving it through the wood with the machine’s wheels or tracks. This easy-to-operate grinder is equipped with a patented cushioning device that protects the wheel from too much pressure, alleviating overload by flexing and keeping the wheel out of harm’s way. Grinding wheels are available in 24” or 26” cutting widths and are paired with an appropriately-sized motor to match the machine’s hydraulic flow. “Removing the stumps following storm or fire damage is essential for aesthetics, safety, and sustainability,” notes Nelson. “It not only diminished the need for ongoing maintenance, but also deters insects or wildlife from settling in and causing additional damage.”

SUPPLEMENTAL EQUIPMENT OPTIONS In addition to the previously mentioned tools, most reclamation jobs will also require one or more of the following depending on the nature, size and scope of the disaster event: ackhoe: good for light-duty shoveling and material B handling in storm-damaged areas cluttered with debris. Brush Cutter: tackles land and vegetation management challenges from cutting through tall, thick grass to clearing large-scale brush and small trees. Bulldozer: can push large quantities of scattered debris into piles for disposal. Plus, its tracks provide enhanced stability and traction on treacherous terrain. Front Loader/Wheel Loader: acts like a mobile shovel that can lift, transport and load debris onto vehicles for removal. “Whether you’re cleaning up after a hurricane, flood or fire, having the correct tools at your disposal is paramount,” says Nelson. “Clearing the land of harmful debris quickly and efficiently reduces hazard potential, gets the landowner back to work, and preserves the area’s natural beauty.” For more information, visit diamondmowers.com or email info@diamondmowers.com.

Accsys Expands U.S. Accoya distribution and Partners with Warren Trask in Northeast Ahead of the opening of the first Accoya USA plant next year, Accsys has expanded its North American footprint by adding the Warren Trask Company as a new distributor in the Northeast United States. In business since 1924, the Warren Trask Company has established itself as one of the top building materials wholesalers in the Northeast. The company’s operations encompass more than 30 acres in Lakeville, Massachusetts, with an additional location in Menands, New York.    “Accoya ticks the boxes that traditional wood does not,” says Bernie Nugent, president of the Warren Trask Company. “Moisture related swelling and difficulty in stability of wood when coated with dark colors now become problems of the past for decks and siding thanks to Accoya. Our goal is to make this sustainable wood option available and affordable through our specialty lumber yard market across the Northeast along with our other best in class offerings. We value the partnership with Accsys in building this opportunity.” “As our U.S. production plant in Kingsport, Tennessee, moves closer to its completion — scheduled for mid-2024 — the additional distribution supports the growing demand for our high-performance, sustainable products,” says John Alexander, group sales director at Accsys. “We are pleased the Warren Trask Company has chosen to supply Accoya, improving the availability of a long-lasting, environmentally responsible building material.” Learn more at accsysplc.com.

Flirting with Disaster by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP Executive vice president, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute 2022 Inductee, American Fence Association Hall of Fame

It is a shame that Americans are so nonchalant about the fact that every year the members of Congress get close to shutting down the government because they can’t reach an agreement on a budget. Since this has become an almost annual occurrence, it begs the question, “What have they been doing for the past 365 days? What could be a higher priority than funding the government?” If you are waiting for me to give you an answer, you are going to have a long wait. I’m as frustrated as anyone, and it gets harder and harder to identify the leader, or leaders, who can turn Congress around and get the members of Congress back to the work they are supposed to be doing. As we head into a national election year in 2024, there is an air of foreboding hanging over Washington, D.C. because election years usually mean even less will get done (if that’s possible). As long as the two houses of Congress are run by opposite parties there is little hope of anything important moving forward. So, what does this mean to the construction/ fencing industry? Why should we be concerned about this “inside the Beltway” activity? Since infrastructure, renewable fuels, energy, and military projects are funded and underway, how much impact could this squabbling have on us? The point is, we must look at the bigger picture. There is no question that this constant battle in Congress is a crisis of leadership. If there are men or women in the House or Senate who are tired of this situation, they need to stand up and go on record for what needs to be done to break the gridlock. The nation needs some realistic, forceful, and trustworthy leaders to emerge from the crowd. We need some younger, more energetic, and more honest people leading the two main parties, and becoming the face of their respective parties.

64

NOVEMBER 2023 | FENCE NEWS USA

The leaders of any entity, corporation, government agency, or department need to be led by someone who becomes the face of the organization, a part of the “brand” they are trying to build and protect. (By the way, the same is true for any trade or professional association, too). Leadership development needs to be a part of the strategic plan of any organization that wants to become successful. Think about some of the most effective leaders the U.S. has had in the past. People like John F. Kennedy, who had to lead the U.S. through the Cuban missile crisis. When the pressure was on, Kenndy was decisive, articulate, compassionate, and engaged. Have you seen any of those characteristics in Congress lately? I sure haven’t. So, here is what we can do in 2024 – we can get involved. We can identify issues that are important to our industry and work to assure that they we are heard, rather than just politely listened to. We can volunteer to work on electing good candidates for the House and Senate. We can also try to get our employees to understand how important it is for them to become engaged in elective politics, too. According to various sources, control of the House of Representatives hinges on the voters in about 60 Congressional districts around the country that are considered “competitive.”This means the ageold saying that “every vote counts” is very true. Being an informed voter is the most critical part of being engaged in the process. Walking uninformed into a voting booth and automatically voting for an entire slate of candidates from one party or the other is irresponsible. We, as employers, have an opportunity to create more informed voters by providing employees with whatever information we can to help them make thoughtful choices. (Note: No, I’m not advocating trying to tell employees who to

vote for. I’m just saying that maybe we can make employees aware of how to get the information they need/want about each candidates’ views and opinions. This, of course, is in addition to giving them time to vote). In the day-to-day chaos of any fence industry company, we are so busy buying, selling, producing, and/or installing fence products that we forget some of the factors that are working to assure – or challenge – our profitability. The impact of government policies on the fence industry is enormous. We can’t go on just dealing with whatever comes our way from the government. We need to have a role in deciding what those government policies will be. People in the fence industry are tired of hearing “get into politics or get out of business.”That’s saying has been around for a long time, but it is still true. Complaining about the effectiveness of government has become a national pastime, but doing something about the effectiveness of government only happens in the voting booth.

As executive vice president of Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute for 38+ years, Mark Levin is also an author and avid promoter of the fence industry. He believes in the successful leadership qualities he promotes, including listening, delegating, consensus building, communications and effective decision-making. 84 Lumber Announces Presenting Sponsorship of 2023 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree

Supported by the nation’s largest privately held building materials supplier, “The People’s Tree” will journey from West Virginia to Washington, D.C. for the 2023 holiday season 84 Lumber, the nation’s largest privately held building materials supplier, is proud to announce its sponsorship of the 2023 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. The tree will journey from the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia to stand proudly in front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. this holiday season. This is the second year 84 Lumber has been the presenting sponsor of what is affectionately is known as “The People’s Tree.” “We are honored to be a part of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree initiative, which provides the opportunity to celebrate the spirit of the season and brings our great country together during the holidays,” says Maggie Hardy, 84 Lumber owner and CEO. “’The People’s Tree’ is a national treasure and 84 Lumber and our associates nationwide are proud to help bring the tree to Washington, D.C. to be enjoyed by everyone.” “The annual journey is only possible with the help of sponsors from both the public and

private sectors,” says Bruce Ward, president of Choose Outdoors, the non-profit partner of the USDA Forest Service. “We’re grateful for the time and resources that 84 Lumber and all our invaluable partners are providing to help make this the best tour to date.” Monongahela National Forest will provide the 2023 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree on behalf of the USDA Forest Service, kicking off a yearlong celebration with the theme of “Endlessly Wild & Wonderful” to connect people to West Virginia’s public lands. Each year, a tree is selected from a different national forest. The Monongahela National Forest was the first national forest to provide “The People’s Tree” on behalf of the Forest Service in 1970, and again in 1976. 2023 will be the third time West Virginia will have the distinction. 84 Lumber will be hosting a special stopover for the tree at its newly expanded location in Morgantown, West Virginia, on Earl L Core

Road in November. 84 Lumber has a total of 14 locations in West Virginia. As part of 84 Lumber’s celebration of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree as a symbol of hope, peace, and unity, the company also will honor military servicepeople at a special stopover at the end of the tree’s journey. Beautiful Christmas trees, fresh from local growers in West Virginia, will be presented by 84 Lumber as an early holiday gift to families at Joint Base Andrews, the final stop on the tree’s journey to Washington, D.C., where it will be unwrapped and transported to the U.S. Capitol. The tree lighting ceremony will take place in late November, and the tree will light up the West Lawn from nightfall until 11 p.m. each evening until January 1, 2024. ‘Trex Moments Deck Giveaway’ Winner Creates Ultimate Outdoor Oasis Just over a year ago, Alex and Erin Nye of San Diego entered the “Trex® Moments Deck Giveaway” sweepstakes hosted by Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing and leader in highperformance, low-maintenance outdoor living products. The couple’s witty and heartwarming video entry and creative vision for their outdoor space captivated the team at Trex and earned them the top prize of $10,000 in Trex products. This summer, the lucky winners put the finishing touches on their dramatic Trex transformation. “We reviewed hundreds of entry videos but the Nye’s definitely stood out,” explains Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing and ESG development for Trex Company. “It made us laugh, smile and showcased how a Trex deck can transform a simple yard into something truly extraordinary.” As a competitor on TV’s American Ninja Warrior, Alex wanted to create an epic backyard training ground to share with the entire San Diego Ninja community. The couple also wanted a place where they could relax and entertain family and friends. Referred to as “The Jungle,” the renovated outdoor space features a custom-designed 400-square-foot Trex deck that Alex describes as “easily the coolest feature of our home.” To seamlessly blend the deck with the natural surroundings, the Nye’s chose Trex® Select decking in Woodland Brown, paired it with Trex Transcend® railing in Charcoal Black with crown top rails, round aluminum balusters and post cap lights. The deck was specially designed around a tree that the couple wanted to preserve, which sits at the center of the space and provides both shade and character. Further enhancing the jungle theme, the deck is finished off with distinctive bamboo skirting. “The creativity that Alex and Erin brought to their vision and the finished outdoor space really captured the spirit of the ‘Trex Moments’ sweepstakes,” notes Adkins. “They created a space where special moments will be made with friends and family for decades to come.” Engineered with a proprietary formulation and durable integrated shell, Trex composite decking resists stains, scratches and mold. It also won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter like wood – and upkeep is hassle-free. No sanding, staining, painting or sealing is ever needed, and spills wash off easily with just soap and water. Sustainably made from 95% recycled and reclaimed materials, Trex decking also contributes to a greener future. “I’ve seen firsthand how bad wooden decks can get, including warping, peeling, and disintegrating,” says Alex. “We’re so happy that we won’t have to worry about any of that. This deck is going to last a lifetime and give us countless memories with our friends and family.” To learn more about Trex outdoor living products, visit Trex.com.

Like with HomeFront Brands, the companies he has worked for have primarily been in property services, although he’s seen the sector at a global level. Finding Success with Personality-Based Sales

by Tom Luby, owner of Profit Builders International

Many in the fencing industry, or any industry for that matter, search for powerful sales tools. The truth is, the ultimate sales weapon is you. Putting your potential customer at ease (comfort), getting to know them and letting them know you (confidence), then finding common ground upon which to build a customer relationship (trust); that is what selling is all about. Once you have found common ground and have put your potential customer at ease, they can develop confidence in you and your company and begin to trust you to deliver what you say. When your customer trusts you, they are yours! If they buy a fence, they will buy from you; or at least give you the opportunity to sell to them. By following these three simple steps of comfort, confidence and trust, your capture ratio will immediately rise along with commissions and profits. For the most part, reputable and quality-conscious fencing contractors sell a similar fencing product that is aesthetically pleasing, sturdy and dependable with a reliable guarantee. Please note that I have taken care to specify reputable and quality conscious in my description of fencing contractors. There are always less reputable fence contractors in the market who do not carry quality products, or operate illegally without proper insurance, or avoid paying workman’s compensation insurance, taxes, etc. Along with them, there are always discount fence customers who are only looking for the very lowest price. Let the less qualified low-ballers compete for that non-profitable job. So, what sets you apart from your true competition? You do! Your personality sets you apart. All other things being equal, and sometimes when they are not equal, it is your singular and unique personality that will make the difference in whether you make the sale, or the next person does. For company owners, ensure your sales staff understands and implements the comfort, confidence and trust sales model. Beyond that, the notion that true salespeople are born, not made is true. Some people are simply more adept at selling than others. For those who have a long history of success in the field of sales, their record speaks for itself. For those who are wanting to enter the sales field, the only way to know if you have what it takes is to try. Neither race nor gender has anything to do with being successful in sales. If you’re curious about your sales potential, jump in and give it a try. Learn from successful salespeople, spend time with successful salespeople in the E/Z Slide Gate Track Systems & Gate Hardware company or find a sales mentor in another field. Study my sales guide to the fencing industry, The Close, and then have at it. If it feels right, then you probably have the right personality for sales. Always remember, in sales you are building relationships and selling yourself. No one else can be you. Your confidence and your belief in your product and company, along with your positive attitude will always make the difference.

BEYOND THE

NUMBERS: Crafting Meaningful Year-End Bonuses for Your Small Business Team

As the year draws to close, small business owners often consider year-end bonuses as a gesture of appreciation for their dedicated team’s hard work and commitment. However, going beyond the traditional numbers game can transform these bonuses into more than just financial rewards. Here’s some ideas for meaningful year-end bonuses that leave a lasting impact – on their own or in conjunction with a monetary reward: PERSONALIZED RECOGNITION

COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS

Tailor your bonuses to reflect each team member's individual contributions. Acknowledge their efforts, accomplishments, and growth within the company. This personal touch shows that you genuinely value their unique role in your small business.

Encourage giving back. Consider offering a bonus that team members can donate to a charity or cause of their choice. This not only promotes social responsibility but also empowers them to make a positive impact.

INVEST IN PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

Create a platform where team members can publicly recognize each other's contributions. Offer a bonus as a reward for the most heartfelt recognition. This fosters a culture of appreciation and camaraderie.

Consider offering bonuses that contribute to their professional development. Whether it's covering the cost of a course, certification, or membership in a relevant industry association, this investment not only enhances their skills but also underscores your commitment to their growth.

FLEXIBILITY AND WORK-LIFE BALANCE Offer the gift of flexibility. Allow team members to use their bonus to take additional days off or even work remotely when possible. This promotes a healthy work-life balance, showing that you care about their well-being beyond the workplace.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS Show your commitment to their health by offering bonuses that can be used for gym memberships, wellness retreats, or even a subscription to a meditation app. Prioritizing their well-being can have a positive ripple effect on their performance.

MEANINGFUL GIFT CARDS

RECOGNITION PLATFORM

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SHARED EXPERIENCES Consider providing bonuses that can be used for shared experiences. Whether it's a team-building retreat, a cooking class, or tickets to a cultural event, this fosters team bonding and creates lasting memories.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT CEREMONY Hold a year-end ceremony where each team member is publicly recognized and receives their bonus. This formal acknowledgment in front of their peers amplifies the sense of achievement. In the realm of small businesses, year-end bonuses can go beyond mere financial incentives. They have the power to create a culture of personal appreciation and growth. Thes can be not only a way for an owner to express your gratitude, but also invest in your team's overall well-being, ensuring a motivated and dedicated workforce in the year ahead.

While gift cards are often seen as impersonal, consider choosing ones that resonate with each team member. Whether it's a bookstore for a bookworm, a gourmet restaurant for a food enthusiast, or a hardware store for a tool you know they’ve been wanting, this thoughtful approach adds a personal touch. New Home Safety Sensor Now Available

Born out of necessity, Infinity Shield addresses several technology-related obstacles. Infinity Shield was developed by Magic Fazel, a radar, sonar and electrical engineer in San Diego. He was looking for an improved security device after his minivan was damaged twice by accidentally closing the garage door on his vehicle. The standard safety sensor can only detect a very limited portion of the garage-door opening below 6”. The remaining space is not protected and any part of a vehicle, bicycle, tool, or other objects may not be detected by the standard safety sensor, leading to accidents, properly damage, and potentially even injuries. Initial market investigation showed no improvements had been made in the market requirements for door safety since the early 90s. Fazel set out to determine how he could modify or change the current sensor technology to be able to address the gap in the current technology to provide improved safety for homeowners. Sunlight was a technical challenge as the sun’s UV light at certain angles can render the receiver blind leading to false positive trigger, leading the garage door to be unclosable for a period of time. Misalignment was another problem: brooms, balls or other items stored in the garage could contact a sensor and render it disabled, causing the garage door to not close properly. These two issues account for a substantial number of annual service calls by homeowners. “During my research, I learned valuable insights of access safety technology,” Fazel explains. “These limitations along with limited available low

voltage power from the operators meant modifying the existing technology was not an option. I reimagined and redesigned the safety system and enhanced its capabilities.” After two years of painstaking development, Fazel achieved his goal through patents on software, firmware algorithm design, and Infinity Shield was born. “Infinity Shield sets new standards.” says Jerker Taudien, chief technical officer at Infinity Shield. “Now, UL325 recognized, it is the only residential IR sensor to cover the entire path of the garage door. Early access installers have been thrilled with how Infinity Shield can be a service offering for their customers. It is compatible with major U.S. brand operators, providing maximum protection and safety for the largest moving part of a home and the most frequently accessed door to a home – the garage.” A sound indicator was added to provide an audible tone when there is something in the path of the door. “This feature can be controlled with an on/ off switch,” he says. “We are excited to work with installers and improve the homeowners garage door experience with a sensor that addresses the fundamental limitations all standard garage sensors have, and provides confidence, safety and reliability for homeowners and installers,” Says Fazel. Infinity Shield is available to installers in the U.S. Visit infinity-shield.com for more information.

Rotary Compactors Reduce Waste Volume by up to 80% ROPAX Roto-Compactors from Epax Systems compact recyclable material and waste at the source where it is generated. These industrial grade machines use a rotating drum with metal teeth to tear, rip, shred and compact a wide variety of items including cardboard boxes, fruit and vegetable crates, plastic waste, packing filler (polystyrene), and more. As the drum rotates it swivels left and right while keeping items under constant pressure to ensure maximum compaction. Two models are available. Bin Packers compact waste directly into the included 1.5 cubic yard steel container with casters. Built-in fork sleeves on container facilitate easy collection via front loading waste collection trucks. Bag Packers compact and bale waste into large 370-gallon plastic bags that sit on a standard 48” x 40” pallet. When bags are full, they can easily be removed by a hand pallet jack and sealed to create a self-contained bale. Both systems utilize a pull-down mail style feed opening. This design serves the dual purposes of keeping users a safe distance from the compaction drum while also providing a handy shelf from which to feed waste. Items can be fed continuously during the compaction process. Ropax Roto-Compactors have a small footprint (not much larger than a pallet) so they require very little space and no structural alterations to facilities. They are ideal for use in warehouses & distribution centers, supermarkets, department stores, hospitals and medical facilities, hotels, function halls, conference centers and more. For more information. visit epaxsystems.com.
