System Pavers Unveils Top Outdoor Living Trends for Spring and Beyond as Homeowner Demand Surges
System Pavers, the nation's premier outdoor living design and installation company, has released its top four outdoor living trends for homeowners this spring. Homeowners are transforming their yards into true extensions of their home's interior, seeking spaces to entertain, connect and add long-term value, even in homes where square footage can't be added inside.
This drive leads to personalized additions like outdoor kitchens, fire pits, pergolas, paver patios, BBQs, fireplaces and more. Ultimately, dedicated outdoor gathering spaces for entertaining are more important than ever.
"Although most outdoor living projects have a timeless appeal because of their lasting nature, we do see trends in materials and preferences," says Sam Leisman, System Pavers senior director of operations in Arizona. "Homeowners across the country tell us they want highquality, full-service design that reflects their family's needs, increases happiness and boosts long-term home value."
Leisman has been with System Pavers for nearly two decades. He collaborated with the System Pavers team to develop these top four outdoor living trends for the spring remodeling season and beyond:
1. Design with Purpose and Function
Homeowners know that thoughtful design increases a space’s function. For example, outdoor lighting is essential to consider in the early planning stages so the space's usability can be extended into the evening. Function can also mean prioritizing higher-quality materials that benefit the areas around the home for years rather than seasons.
A popular choice in recent years has been permeable pavers, which allow water to pass through, reduce runoff and help manage water throughout your yard. Properly addressing drainage protects your investment, safeguards the foundation, prevents erosion, reduces pooling, and keeps your lawn and foliage healthier.
"Homeowners view their projects as major investments that enhance function, and those lasting touches and upgrades can add significant impact," says Leisman. "Daily activities such as entertaining, cooking, and dining al fresco are important to consider because elements like shade structures, power sources, integrated audio and outdoor lighting all affect how a family can enjoy the space for years down the line."
2. Wellness-Oriented Retreats
A recent reoccurring theme in how homeowners are prioritizing function is an increased focus on spaces that support daily living and wellness. Outdoor areas are evolving into personalized retreats designed to reduce stress, promote activity and support overall happiness.
The key to prioritizing wellness is putting outdoor space to good use with thoughtful, helpful additions. Creating private spaces for physical and mental recharge can be large or small. It might be a small, pergola-shaded corner for reading, or a large patio for outdoor workouts in the privacy of the backyard.
Wellness, however, does not need to be limited to solo activities. Thoughtful design can bring people together, such as outdoor kitchens or fire pit areas, and also contribute to enhanced wellbeing. Fire features cannot be underestimated, as the emotional boost of listening to a fire crackle has been proven to improve overall relaxation.
"We saw this trend start on the West Coast a few years ago when more homeowners began asking for dedicated yoga areas with soft turf. That sentiment continues to grow and evolve," adds Robert Frost, System Pavers director of operations, Atlanta. "Homeowners are redefining wellness in their homes and prioritizing thoughtful design that helps them recharge. Creating a place to relax and unwind with loved ones is priceless for reducing stress and increasing happiness."
3. Natural Materials, Texture and Colors
For years, modern design meant cool, crisp shades of gray or clean white for hardscape materials. Now, there's a big shift toward more natural shades like mocha brown, sandy beige or soft taupe. White is still popular, though now a warm white with a hint of tan is rising in popularity.
Beyond color, texture comes into play with material selection trends. Design choices feature more organic, flowing elements with softer shapes and rounded corners. Homeowners are choosing a variety of textures that bring a layered approach, including artificial turf, textured pavers and in some regions, composite decking materials, which create a unique integration.
"We love this move toward natural materials and tones. It gives outdoor spaces a more rooted feeling, connected to the landscape," says Aaron Brundage, System Pavers director of operations, Colorado. "Product choices that blend with nature depend heavily on your region. We have
to consider your home's interior, exterior, regional climate and native plantings when developing the perfect design."
4. Low-Maintenance Hardscape Design
Families have increasingly busy lifestyles, and anything that can help minimize their stress is crucial. There are many choices homeowners can make to create low-maintenance outdoor living spaces that require little upkeep. Choosing materials that are built to last and age beautifully is becoming infinitely more popular than products that require regular cleaning, painting or staining.
Durability plays an essential role in prioritizing sustainability as well. Minimizing water usage and reducing runoff is ultimately cost-effective and better for the environment. Hardscape solutions engineered to last and support the communities around them are quickly becoming the standard, especially products like permeable pavers that help communities meet local government drainage requirements in some regions.
"Today's homeowners look for more strategic material selections that go beyond aesthetics and offer long-term value," says Leisman. "The final product should have an immediate and lasting impact, minimizing future maintenance costs."

Water Safety Month & Pool Fencing
As temperatures rise and pools reopen for the season, May’s Water Safety Month designation serves as an important reminder of the role fencing plays in protecting families. Pool fencing and the gates that secure them provide more than just a perimeter, serving as a critical first line of defense in preventing accidents and ensuring peace of mind. In this section, we highlight product solutions and innovations, along with best practices that help contractors deliver safety where it matters most.
Expanding Opportunities with Pool Safety Fencing: Innovation That Works for Contractors
We’ve all experienced it.
Your phone updates overnight, and suddenly everything is faster, smoother, and easier to use. Your apps anticipate what you need. Your car alerts you before there’s even a problem. Technology continues to evolve not just for the sake of innovation, but to improve the overall user experience.
Now compare that to the fence industry.
For decades, most products have remained largely unchanged. Installers adapt, homeowners accept minor inconveniences, and “good enough” has often been the standard. But as expectations rise across every other part of daily life, customers are starting to notice the difference.
The question becomes: why shouldn’t fencing evolve too? All-Safe Pool Fence & Covers has focused on answering that question by rethinking not just what they build, but how it’s used, installed, and experienced. “Real innovation in this industry is not about reinventing the fence,” says Dave Woods, manager with All-Safe. “It is about removing friction for both the installer and the end user.”
Small Changes That Make a Big Impact
Take something as simple as a section latch. Traditionally, section latches have done their job, but not without compromise. They can be awkward to operate, visually unappealing, and offer little flexibility during installation. Most installers have simply learned to work around these limitations.
But Woods says All-Safe’s Quick Lock Latch was designed to change that experience.
For the homeowner, it provides a cleaner look and a much easier connect and disconnect process. For the installer, it introduces built-in adjustability, allowing sections to be tightened, loosened, and finetuned on site. What was once a fixed component becomes an adaptable part of the system.
“It is a small improvement that solves a long-standing challenge and saves time in the field,” adds Woods.
Simplifying Gate Installation
That same approach extends to gate systems. Gate installation has traditionally been one of the more time-consuming and detail-sensitive parts of a pool fence project. Achieving proper alignment, consistent closing tension, and reliable latching often requires multiple adjustments.
All-Safe’s gate kits were developed to simplify that process. Woods says by standardizing components and refining how each element works together, installers can achieve consistent, professional results with fewer adjustments and fewer callbacks. “The system is designed to work predictably, reducing guesswork and improving efficiency.”
For contractors, this means faster installs and greater confidence in the finished product. For homeowners, it means a gate that closes reliably, latches securely, and complements the overall appearance of the fence.
Supporting the Contractor Experience
Product innovation is only part of the solution. Contractors also face challenges outside of installation, including ordering materials, training crews, and finding reliable answers in the field. These factors directly impact efficiency and profitability.
To address this, All-Safe has focused on building a better overall contractor experience.
“Our Partner Portal allows contractors to access pricing, place orders, and manage projects in a streamlined way,” explains Woods. “This reduces administrative time and keeps jobs moving forward without unnecessary delays.”
All-Safe’s Support Knowledge Base provides clear, accessible installation guides and troubleshooting resources. Whether answering a quick question on site or training a new team member, the information is available when it is needed.
“In addition, our YouTube channel provides contractors with step-bystep installation videos and product demonstrations,” says Woods. “These resources can be shared with end-users, which helps reduce the number of service calls or inquiries.”
A Growing Opportunity for Fence Contractors
As Water Safety Month brings increased attention to drowning prevention, demand for pool safety fencing continues to grow.
Homeowners are more aware than ever of the importance of protective barriers. Insurance providers and local regulations continue to reinforce that need. This creates a strong and consistent market for contractors who can offer compliant, well-designed solutions.
For fence contractors, Woods says pool safety fencing is a natural extension of existing services. “It requires minimal additional equipment, can be installed efficiently, and offers strong margins compared to larger perimeter projects. It also creates opportunities for repeat and referral business, particularly in pool dense neighborhoods.”
Removable mesh pool fencing has become especially popular due to its clean appearance, durability, and flexibility. Homeowners appreciate solutions that protect their families without permanently altering their outdoor space.
Looking Ahead
The fence industry does not need to be reinvented, but it does need to evolve. Contractors who adopt products that reduce friction, improve efficiency, and enhance the customer experience will be better positioned to grow in a competitive market.
“At All-Safe Pool Fence & Covers, we believe innovation should be practical. It should make installation easier, products more reliable, and outcomes more consistent,” stresses Woods. “When that happens, everyone benefits. Contractors work more efficiently, homeowners gain confidence in their investment, and the industry as a whole moves forward.”

Check Your Pool Gate Month – It’s Not Just a Gate, IT’S A LIFESAVER
Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 – 4 years, with an average of 11 fatal and 22 non-fatal drownings per day. Additionally, 70% of child drownings occur during non-swim times. Children's natural curiosity often leads them to backyard swimming pools, and most children that drown gain access to the pool through a faulty fence or gate. To help reduce the risk of child drowning the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) has developed 5 layers of protection.
The first and most important layer is a barrier that limits access to the pool and an alarm to alert you if someone enters the pool area unexpectedly. Fencing provides a constant barrier, but the fence is only effective if the gate and gate hardware are in good working order. Checking the pool gate is crucial for drowning prevention, yet only 30% of pool owners do this once a year. To raise awareness of the issue and provide education on how to check and maintain a pool gate, D&D Technologies, along with the NDPA, established Check Your Pool Gate Month, starting on May 1.
“Check Your Pool Gate Month reminds pool owners to take one simple action that could save a child’s life – check the pool gate to ensure the pool fence, gate, latch and hinges are secure and working properly, with the aim to reduce child drownings by making it harder for them to access the pool," explains Jeff Horton with D&D Technologies. “For every child that drowns, another seven experience a non-fatal drowning, and 40% of these children require further care. A few minutes is all it takes to check a pool fence and gate, because it’s not just a gate; it’s a lifesaver. "
Safety Checklist for Pool Gates
• Gate should open outwards, away from the pool
• Gate latch release knob should be out of reach of children under 5 (check local codes/standards for minimum requirements)
• Fence should be at a minimum height to comply with your region and encompass the pool area (check local codes/standards for minimum requirements)
• Maximum clearance from finished ground surface is no more than 4 inches (100mm)
• Fence perimeter must have adequate distance from other climbable objects or structures
• Gate must be self-closing and self-latching
• Gate hinges are reliable, self-closing, tension-adjustable, rust free and bind free
• Gate latch must be adjustable for height and width
• Gate latch cannot be key locked in the “open” position
• Gate latch cannot be opened using implements or force
• Gate will shut and latch securely from any position, including from resting on the latching mechanism
• Gate complies with all relevant United States codes/standards and legislation for pool safety
If new or replacement gate hardware is needed, install proven products, like the D&D MagnaLatch® safety latch and TruClose® safety gate hinge. Horton says the MagnaLatch® gate latch and TruClose® gate hinge, invented by D&D
Technologies, meet all international and local pool safety codes and fulfill all the safety checklist’s requirements. The MagnaLatch® is a reliable, adjustable, and magnetically triggered self-latching safety gate latch. TruClose® are self-closing, adjustable polymer safety gate hinges.
The MagnaLatch® ALERT is D&D’s latest pool safety innovation, providing both audible and visual alarms if the gate is left open or not physically latched. Pool owners can see at a glance and hear from a distance if their pool gate is not latched properly.
“Together, MagnaLatch and TruClose are the world’s most trusted pool safety hardware system, having been installed on gates for over 35 years and saving countless lives,” adds Horton.
D&D is the exclusive gate hardware company to receive the NDPA’s Platinum Seal in the Pool Gates, Latches and Hinges category. The Commitment to Safer Waters (CSW) Seal Program is designed to identify and recognize companies and organizations that demonstrate a clear, measurable, and ongoing dedication to water safety and drowning prevention.
D&D Technologies gate hardware can be purchased on Amazon or at Home Depot or Lowes. If you cannot fix it call your local contractor to service your gate and ensure the gate is secured while waiting.
“We encourage everyone in our industry to support the ‘Check Your Pool Gate Month’ campaign by following D&D’s social media platforms and sharing the posts,” adds Horton.

Trident™ Safe Signal™ Raises the Bar for Pool Gate Safety
With summer swimming season approaching, pool safety remains a top priority for homeowners and contractors alike. While traditional measures such as gravity latches and supervision play an important role, advancements in hardware technology are providing an added layer of protection.
The Trident™ Safe Signal™, part of the Trident™ line from Nationwide Industries, features a magnetic pool safety latch system designed to enhance both awareness and security around pool enclosures.
“The goal with Safe Signal was to go beyond standard latch functionality and create something that actively alerts users to potential safety concerns,” says Rich Hornack, manager of inside sales and service with Nationwide. “It’s about giving homeowners and contractors greater peace of mind, especially in environments where awareness safety is critical.”
At the core of the system is a two-stage audible warning feature. The latch emits an initial alert when the gate is opened, followed by a more persistent alarm if the gate remains open for more than 15 seconds. At approximately 90 decibels – comparable to a barking dog – the alarm is designed to be heard throughout the pool area.
“The audible alerts are a key differentiator,” Hornack says. “They provide immediate feedback and help ensure the gate isn’t unintentionally left open.”
In addition to sound, the Nationwide Trident Safe Signal incorporates a 360-degree visual warning system. Bright blue LED lights activate when the latch is engaged or left open, increasing visibility during nighttime use and reinforcing situational awareness.
Installation is also designed with efficiency in mind. The system can be installed using basic tools, including a tape measure and drill, with selftapping screws simplifying the process.
“We wanted to make sure this was as practical as it is effective,” explains Hornack. “Contractors can install it quickly, and homeowners benefit from an added level of protection without added complexity.”
As the industry continues to emphasize water safety, products like the Trident Safe Signal demonstrate how innovation in gate hardware can play a critical role in reducing risk and improving overall pool security.

National Water Safety Month: The Critical Role of Pool Fencing in Drowning Prevention
Each May, National Water Safety Month serves as a timely reminder of the importance of protecting families—especially young children—around water. For professionals in the fencing industry, it is also an opportunity to highlight the essential role that proper pool barriers play in preventing one of the most tragic and preventable causes of death: childhood drowning.
Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children under the age of five in the United States. These incidents are often silent, swift, and occur in familiar environments, most commonly residential pools. In many cases, they happen during brief lapses in supervision, underscoring the need for multiple layers of protection. Among those layers, pool fencing stands out as one of the most effective and proven safeguards.
For 40 years, Life Saver Pool Fence has been at the forefront of this effort, providing high-quality pool safety fencing while supporting drowning prevention initiatives across the country. The company’s mission is simple but powerful: keep children out of pools and in their families’ lives.
“Pool safety fencing serves as a critical barrier between young children and water,” says Eric Lupton, CEO of Life Saver Pool Fence. “Our pool fence systems are designed with both safety and usability in mind. Their removable mesh fencing features durable, climb-resistant materials supported by strong poles, along with self-closing, self-latching gates that help ensure the barrier is consistently secure. This combination creates an effective line of defense not only for toddlers but also for pets.”
What makes pool fencing particularly effective is its passive protection. Unlike alarms or covers, which require activation or consistent use, a properly installed fence is always in place, working 24/7 to restrict unsupervised access. For families, that reliability can make all the difference.
Beyond installation, Lupton says Life Saver Pool Fence franchisees and dealers play an active role in their local communities by educating families about water safety. “These efforts reinforce the idea that prevention is not a single solution but a combination of awareness, supervision, and physical barriers.”
The company also demonstrates its commitment through its donation program, which provides free pool fencing to families who have experienced a fatal or non-fatal drowning incident. Funded by customer purchases, this initiative reflects a broader industry responsibility to not only sell safety products but also support communities affected by tragedy.
As National Water Safety Month brings increased attention to drowning prevention, the message for the fencing industry is clear: pool barriers save lives. By continuing to innovate, educate, and advocate, manufacturers and installers alike play a vital role in reducing preventable deaths.
In the end, a pool fence is more than just a product—it is a life-saving
The National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) Launches Safer Waters Seal Program, Recognizing Industry Partners and Leaders
The National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) has announced the official launch of its Commitment to Safer Waters (CSW) Seal Program, a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to identify and recognize companies and organizations that demonstrate a clear, measurable, and ongoing dedication to water safety and drowning prevention.
The CSW Seal communicates to consumers, partners, and stakeholders that a company or organization actively integrates water safety into its culture, values and operations. To qualify, organizations must demonstrate internal and external commitment, and if applicable, ensure their products meet
nationally accepted certification standards and their services comply with industry-approved training and certification policies, as verified by third-party testing labs.
“Our Commitment to Safer Waters Seal is more than just a badge; it’s a public declaration that an organization is a true champion for water safety,” says NDPA executive director Alissa Magrum. “We are proud to stand alongside our inaugural partners who are reinforcing industry best practices and leading the charge in protecting children and families from drowning and experiencing water related tragedies.”

How to Choose the Best Pool Fence in Residential Spaces
When it comes to residential fencing around pools, contractors know the right choice has to pull double duty. It needs to meet safety code requirements while also delivering the privacy and style homeowners want for their backyard retreat. With so many residential fencing options on the market, how does one decide which is best for the project they are working on?
Jarrett Adams, vice president and general manager of the fencing category with Fortress Building Products, breaks it down, step by step:
Start with compliance and safety. Often, the first question homeowners ask is, ‘What is the safest type of pool fence?' The answer is simple. The safest option is one that meets local building codes, many of which follow standards set by the International Code Council (ICC), and the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC).
According to the ICC, residential fencing surrounding the pool should be a minimum of 48 inches tall with self-closing and self-latching gates. It should have no more than two inches of clearance from the ground for grade surfaces that are not solid, such as grass or gravel. If the surface below the barrier is solid, such as concrete, the bottom of the barrier shall not exceed four inches. That low gap helps keep pets and kids safe. The clearance also creates enough space between the top and bottom rails to prevent someone from using the privacy fencing around the pool like ladder rungs to climb up and over. And finally, the pickets themselves should be spaced no more than four inches apart. This narrow “air space” or “gap width” prevents small children from slipping through. Altogether, these specifications create more than just code-compliant fencing around the pool. They form a safety system designed to protect people, pets, and peace of mind.
Prioritize durable residential fencing options. Meeting code is only part of the equation. The safest residential fencing is also the one that lasts. Wood fencing, for example, is prone to rot, warping and weather damage, especially around pools where moisture is constant. That deterioration can quickly turn into a safety issue.
Steel and aluminum fencing, on the other hand, are durable and inherently resistant to the damaging effects of moisture and will sidestep those challenges. Further, leading fencing manufacturers use a powder-coated finish for enhanced corrosion resistance and UV protection.
With this level of protection, residential pool fencing can withstand the most extreme weather, including coastal environments or regions that experience significant precipitation. This gives peace of mind to contractors and their customers that their pool fences will remain durable and safe season after season.
Address sloped terrain with rackable technology. Many homes with pools end up with double fencing, including one wrapped around the pool and another marking the property line. When both fences match in material and style, it ties the whole yard together and looks great. But not every backyard has level ground, especially those on large properties. With traditional fencing materials, this can lead to stair-stepped panels, awkward gaps at the bottom, or an uneven top line. None of that is ideal for safety or aesthetics.
That’s where rackable fencing options come into play. These are steel and aluminum residential fencing solutions with fully rackable technology that can follow the natural grade of the landscape. The panels adjust smoothly without metal-on-metal pressure, so there is no risk of fatigue or damage to the powder coat.
Contractors can use them around the pools and as perimeter fencing. With their clean, streamlined profiles, these metal fencing options blend effortlessly into the landscape, allowing the pool and outdoor living space to take center stage.
“At the end of the day, residential fencing enclosing pools does not have to be complicated,” says Adams. “Focus on three essentials: code compliance, durable materials and solutions that adapt to site-specific conditions and terrain. Getting that right will give homeowners a perimeter solution that checks every box, including safety, style and long-term value.”

PrivacyLink Chain Link with Factory-Inserted Slats: Ideal for Pool Enclosures
Swimming pool owners may not always consider chain link fencing for pool enclosures due to concerns about meeting safety codes. However, PrivacyLink offers a solution that meets these requirements while enhancing both security and appearance.
PrivacyLink pool fencing is engineered for use around swimming pools, lakes and other areas where water safety is critical. Their fences meet minimum size and safety criteria, helping prevent climbing or unauthorized entry by small children and other unsupervised individuals.
“Pool safety is one of the most important applications for fencing, and contractors need solutions they can trust to meet code while still delivering on appearance and ease of Installation,” says Pat Hoggan with PrivacyLink. “PrivacyLink
pool fence was designed to check all of those boxes.” He says contractors should always check local codes before installing any fence around a pool.
The fencing is available in two models, PrivacyLink and IndustrialLink. They are both available in wire configurations, including 9- or 10-gauge galvanized wire and 9- or 10-gauge galvanized, core-fused, and bonded vinyl-coated wire. Both are manufactured to meet stringent safety standards, including requirements for outwardopening gates with self-closing and self-latching mechanisms, with latches positioned at least 54 inches above grade. Height specifications also comply with applicable pool safety codes.
A key benefit is the factory-inserted slat system, which enhances both privacy and aesthetics.
PrivacyLink features Fin2000 double-wall slats, while IndustrialLink incorporates heavier-duty Industrial slats for added strength. Because the slats are inserted at the factory, installers can reduce labor time and improve job site efficiency.
“Having the slats already inserted in the wire allows contractors to move faster without sacrificing quality,” Hoggan says. “It’s a practical advantage that also delivers a clean, finished look.”
With multiple color options available, PrivacyLink fencing also contributes to a more visually appealing pool environment while maintaining safety as the top priority.

Rethink Pool Fencing: Safety Meets Style
When most fence installers think “pool fence”, they probably have one specific style in mind. In fact, many contractors will keep an inventory of the most popular “BOCA” style fence on-hand, and when a customer calls, that product is quoted by default.
Although there are certainly advantages to simplifying the selection process for homeowners, there’s an argument to be made that you’re missing out on an opportunity to increase the size of the sale while separating yourself from the competition. Simply put, it may be time for fence contractors to broaden their definition of pool fence.
SAFETY is the number one concern when it comes to pool fence, and although there are certainly minimum standards for things like height and hardware, the overall characteristics of pool fence is a moving target. The challenge for fence contractors and manufacturers is that municipalities often supersede state mandates and HOA regulations can limit what is allowed. One rule that’s consistent is that in order to meet the standard, pool fence cannot be easily climbable and that’s where opportunities may lie.
“We offer multiple options for pool fence that meet the standard in any given part of the country” says Karl Stinson, CEO of Elite Fence Products, Inc. “In fact, some days, we might produce five to six distinct types of fence that each meet the code for a particular market, but the one thing they have in common is that they prevent children from climbing.”
The most common pool fence sold throughout the country is ornamental aluminum. Depending on the market, heights can range from 48 inches to 60 inches, with specific rail spacing that can be no less than 45 inches, and picket

spacing that must be less than 4 inches. An alternative to the rail spacing rule [that still prevents climbing] can be to specify tight picket spacing of approximately one and five-eighths inches. Elite produces a pool-specific product trademarked as LIFEGard™ utilizing a more robust rail/picket combo that is often used in commercial applications.
“Lately, we’ve been getting a lot of calls for pool fence that’s not the typical ornamental styles,” says Stinson. “For people who want privacy along with security, we’ve designed a beautiful aluminum/vinyl hybrid privacy fence that’s part of our new COREGard™ line and meets all the requirements with the proper hardware,” he adds. “For customers who want to maximize their view, Elite has also provided glass railing that can meet the standard in most markets.”
Expanding beyond traditional pool fence styles is a great opportunity to separate yourself in a market that is increasingly competitive by creating a space that feels intentional and uniquely tailored to your customers’ needs.
Elite Fence Products, Inc. is a leading, family-owned aluminum fence and railing manufacturer based in Michigan with additional locations in Tennessee and Florida.

When Pool Fencing Is a Safety System: A Closer Look at Montage Plus
As Water Safety Month highlights the importance of responsible pool design and access control, fencing systems used in these environments must meet stringent performance standards. Unlike typical perimeter fencing, pool enclosures serve as permanent safety systems, designed to perform reliably amid constant moisture, chemical exposure and frequent use.
Ameristar Perimeter Security’s Montage Plus Pool, Pet and Play ornamental steel fencing is widely specified for residential and light commercial pool environments because safety, durability, and compliance are built into the system from the start.
“Pool fencing isn’t just about defining a space, it’s about preventing access and protecting lives,” says Chris Rice, product manager with Ameristar. “Every component of Montage Plus is engineered with that responsibility in mind.”
Access Control Starts with Design
Unintended access can develop over time due to grade changes, excessive picket spacing, or climbable fence designs. Montage Plus addresses these vulnerabilities with its Pool, Pet and Play panel configuration, featuring reduced 3-inch picket spacing to limit footholds and prevent passthrough access by children and pets.
Available in heights ranging from 3 to 6 feet, including fall-protection compliant options, the system supports a broad range of residential, multi-family, and light commercial pool applications.
“Proper spacing and panel design are critical for maintaining safety over the life of the fence,” says Rice. “It’s not just about installation; it’s about longterm performance.”
Built for Long-Term Performance
Montage Plus panels are fully welded using ProFusion® technology, eliminating screws and rivets that can loosen or corrode over time. With welded 18-gauge pickets, 14-gauge rails, and 16-gauge posts, the system is engineered for durability in demanding pool environments.
To combat corrosion, a leading cause of premature fence failure around pools, the system is protected with Ameristar’s 23-stage dual E-Coat process, which fully coats all exposed components inside and out.
“We know pool environments are tough on materials,” Rice says. “That’s why we’ve invested in coatings and construction methods that extend the life of the system and reduce maintenance concerns.”
Montage Plus is backed by a 20-year limited warranty, along with a five-year labor warranty.
Installation Flexibility Without Compromise
Because pool sites are rarely flat or uniform, Montage Plus panels are designed to be highly rackable, allowing the fence to follow changes in grade while maintaining consistent ground clearance and proper alignment — both critical for effective access control.
Multiple style and height options enhance architectural compatibility while preserving visibility for adult supervision.
Manufactured in the U.S. and compliant with the Buy American Act, Montage Plus is well suited for both private and public projects.
As Water Safety Month underscores the importance of thoughtful planning and durable solutions, Montage Plus demonstrates how engineered fencing systems contribute to safer pool environments through consistency, longevity, and proven performance.

"At Trex, sustainability isn’t just part of what we do, it’s at the heart of everything we stand for,” notes Zambanini. “Our goal is to reduce environmental impact while giving homeowners and builders the products and tools they need to create beautiful, resilient outdoor spaces. 76 FENCE Continues Florida Expansion with Largest Multi-Territory Commitment in the State to Date
76 FENCE, one of the fastest-growing fencing franchise brands in the country, has announced its largest multi-territory commitment in Florida to date with the launch of seven territories under the ownership of Tom and Kate Donnelly, beginning in the Greater Tampa market.
The Donnellys have opened their first operating pod, with a second pod scheduled to launch by the end of the year. The seven-territory agreement represents a significant milestone in the brand’s continued Florida expansion and reinforces the state as a priority development market.
Tom Donnelly brings a background in leadership and operational management, having overseen teams and performance-driven environments throughout his career. Kate Donnelly contributes experience in business administration and client relations, helping establish the systems and service standards that support the company’s growth. Together, they are building a family-operated business positioned for long-term expansion across multiple territories.
“We were intentional about finding an opportunity with real staying power,” says Tom Donnelly. “Florida, and particularly Tampa, continues to experience strong residential growth. We saw a clear need for a fencing company that operates professionally and reliably. 76 FENCE provides the systems and structure to scale responsibly across seven territories.”
The brand’s emphasis on accountability and customer experience played a central role in their decision. “In many home service industries, homeowners face inconsistent communication and unpredictable timelines,” says Kate Donnelly. “What stood out to us about 76 FENCE was its commitment to a streamlined process, clear communication and high standards from estimate through installation. That’s what we want to deliver in Tampa.”
The Donnellys’ expansion builds on the recent launch of John and Kristen Campbell as Regional Developers for Greater Tampa, Bradenton and Sarasota. The regional development is focused on structured growth across Florida’s Gulf Coast.
“Florida remains one of the strongest growth markets in the country for our brand,” says Ed Samane, president of 76 FENCE. “Tom and Kate’s decision to commit to seven territories reflects both the opportunity in this region and the strength of our operating model. This is a meaningful step forward in our longterm Florida strategy.”
John Campbell, regional developer for 76 FENCE in Florida, said multiterritory growth requires discipline and vision. “Seven territories is a serious commitment,” Campbell says. “Tom and Kate understand that scaling successfully means building strong local teams, executing consistent processes and staying engaged in the communities they serve. We’re excited to support their growth as they establish operations in Tampa and expand from there.”

Nice Unveils NextGeneration Garage Door Operator
Portfolio
Nice showcased its next generation of garage door operators (GDOs) at IDAExpo+ 2026 last month. Designed with both installers and end-users in mind, the new platform introduces a smarter, more streamlined approach to residential and commercial garage door control, delivering dependable, long-lasting performance; simplified, turnkey installation; and a sleek, modern housing featuring integrated LED lighting, backup capabilities and flexible connectivity options.
At the core of the new lineup is a fully developed, modular product family that gives dealers and installers greater flexibility across a wide range of applications. With models supporting DC, Wi-Fi, and non-Wi-Fi configurations, Nice provides a comprehensive offering that adapts to both connected and traditional installations. Importantly, the platform is designed to evolve with customer needs, allowing a seamless upgrade path from non-Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi functionality via the wall station. This approach not only simplifies product selection but also positions Nice as a strong alternative to other brands, particularly for projects where flexibility and future-proofing are critical.
NEW Heavy-Duty GDOs
The Nice 800 Series (Linear821 and Linear861), GDOs are designed to lift larger, heavier garage doors than previous models. They join the proven 661 and 621 models, which were the first in this series of smart, Nice-branded GDOs that combine refined industrial design with exceptional value.
NEW Space-Saving, Wall-Mounted Jackshaft Solution
Expanding the lineup’s versatility is the Nice 1461J Residential Jackshaft Operator, a compact, wall-mounted solution engineered for modern garages with large doors and high ceilings. At a market-leading 4.5 inches wide, the 1461J fits into narrow spaces that other jackshaft operators can’t, while simplifying installation. Its space-saving design integrates LED lighting, control unit, cable monitor, and electronics into a single, efficient system, offering both aesthetic appeal and installation efficiency.
Together, the 600 series, 800 series, and 1461J jackshaft operator represent the foundation of the Nice next-generation GDO portfolio, offering installers
an extensive lineup that addresses a wide range of garage door designs and installation scenarios.
“As garages incorporate more connected technologies, Nice continues to focus on what matters most: dependable operation, simplified installation, and privacy-respecting features that avoid unnecessary complexity or subscription requirements,” says Mark Mattson, senior product manager at Nice. “The new generation of operators delivers on that promise with quiet, reliable performance, long-lasting components, modern appearance, and a streamlined installation process.”
Key Advantages of Nice GDOs
Faster, Easier Installation
For dealers, reducing installation time and service callbacks is critical to profitability, and the new Nice garage door operators deliver. Operators across the line come with limits preset, simplifying installation. With interchangeable chain and belt rail options, any operator head works with either configuration, reducing the number of SKUs dealers need to stock while maintaining flexibility across installations.
Additionally, the inclusion of an integrated battery within the operator, rather than as an add-on, delivers longer life than competitive solutions and enables installation even in environments where power is not yet available, making these systems especially well-suited for new construction projects.
Quiet Operation
Powered by DC motors with soft start and soft stop, the Nice GDO portfolio delivers smooth, quiet operation, an increasingly important quality indicator for today’s homeowners. The 1461J mirrors this experience with jackshaft operation that minimizes vibration and noise while delivering exceptional lifting power for demanding applications.
Smart Convenience
Connectivity is a defining strength of the new platform. With built-in Wi-Fi and the companion Nice G.O. mobile app, users can control and monitor their garage doors from anywhere. The app enables real-time notifications, scheduling for doors and lights, and secure access management for users. The new GDOs also integrate seamlessly with control platforms like Alexa and Google Home, as well as Alarm.com and Nice premium security and smart living systems powered by ELAN OS.
For installations where Wi-Fi is not initially required, the system’s architecture allows for easy upgrades through the wall station, ensuring long-term adaptability without replacing the core operator. This flexible approach reinforces Nice as a competitive, forward-thinking alternative in the category.

Quality Vinyl Fencing: Strength, Privacy and Performance Matter
When selecting a vinyl fence, appearance alone can be misleading. While many products may look similar, differences in material thickness, durability and privacy can significantly impact long-term performance.
Weatherables® vinyl fencing is engineered to address those differences, offering a solution designed for both contractors and homeowners seeking reliability and value.
“Not all vinyl fencing is built the same,” says Brad Halley, president, Weatherables. “The real distinction comes down to material quality and how the product performs over time, especially when it comes to privacy and durability.”
Many standard vinyl fences use thinner materials that can allow light and shadows to pass through, reducing privacy and, in some cases, revealing silhouettes from the opposite side. These lighterweight products may also be more vulnerable to
damage from weather events such as hail or high winds.
Weatherables fencing is manufactured with materials that are up to 50% thicker than many competing options. The thicker pickets are designed to block light and eliminate visibility through the fence, providing consistent privacy from all angles.
“Privacy is one of the top reasons customers choose vinyl fencing,” Halley says. “We’ve engineered our products so homeowners don’t have to compromise between appearance and true privacy.”
Beyond privacy, the system is designed to perform in challenging weather conditions. Using a highwind installation process, Weatherables 6-foot tongue-and-groove privacy fences are engineered to withstand sustained winds of 110 to 120 mph and gusts ranging from 130 to 137 mph.
FENCE NEWS IS A PROUD MEMBER OF THESE ASSOCIATIONS:
IS A PROUD TO PARTNER
“That level of performance is critical in regions where storms are a concern,” Halley says. “Customers want to know their investment will hold up when it matters most. Our vinyl fencing stands apart because it’s built thicker, performs better, and lasts longer, even in areas prone to strong storms and harsh weather conditions.”
In addition to product performance, Weatherables emphasizes customer support, offering guidance from product selection through installation. “We see it as more than just selling a fence,” Halley adds. “It’s about helping customers choose the right solution and ensuring it performs for years to come.”
With a focus on strength, privacy and long-term durability, Weatherables vinyl fencing is designed to deliver consistent performance in a wide range of applications.

NADRA Promotes Deck Safety Awareness During 2026 Deck Safety Month
May is Deck Safety Month®, and the North American Deck and Railing Association is urging contractors and homeowners to prioritize outdoor structure safety through its annual Check Your Deck® campaign.
According to NADRA, millions of decks across North America are beyond their useful life or have not been properly maintained. Common issues include loose railings, corroded fasteners, weakened ledger connections, and structural damage caused by weather exposure.
The Check Your Deck® campaign encourages homeowners to perform a visual inspection each spring, looking for warning signs such as:
• Unstable or wobbly railings
• Soft or splintering wood
• Rusted hardware or connectors
• Loose or missing fasteners
• Signs of rot or decay
Common structural issues, including ledger board failures, corroded connectors, improper fasteners and inadequate guardrail systems, also remain prevalent, particularly in older decks. NADRA emphasizes that contractors are on the front lines of identifying these deficiences, educating
customers and delivering code-compliant solutions.
Contractors play a critical role in ensuring decks are not only built to code, but maintained and repaired to perform safely over time. Deck Safety Month is an opportunity for professionals to engage customers, provide inspections, and reinforce best practices.
NADRA encourages contractors to incorporate deck inspections into their seasonal service offerings and to proactively address potential hazards before they lead to failure.
Beyond construction, there is a significant opportunity for contractors to position themselves as trusted advisors. Inspection services and educating clients on proper maintenance can drive business while improving overall safety
As demand for outdoor structures continues to rise, NADRA underscores the importance of quality craftsmanship, proper installation, and ongoing evaluation to ensure long-term performance.
To support industry professionals, NADRA provides a range of resources through the Check Your Deck® program, including:
• Inspection checklists and safety guidelines
• Consumer education materials contractors can share with clients
• Access to NADRA’s Deck Evaluation/ Inspection Certification program
• Technical resources aligned with current building codes and standards
• Marketing tools to help promote inspection and repair services during Deck Safety Month
Deck Safety Month® serves as a reminder that safety is not a one-time consideration – it is an ongoing responsibility shared across the industry.

Rob Kilroy DIRECTOR OF SALES PEXCO with
From early days in customer service to leading sales at Pexco, Rob Kilroy has built his career on understanding people as much as products. With a focus on relationships, industry expertise and longterm growth, he continues to shape success in an ever-changing fence industry.
You’ve worked in sales for over 20 years. What drew you to that side of the business, and what has kept you passionate about it over the years?
I got started in sales while working for a health insurance company. I was in customer service at the time, but the salespeople would bring me along to open enrollment health fairs to help sell our plans. It was something I enjoyed doing and my career took a turn from there. Once in sales, I worked for some different companies that had diverse roles and expectations for their salespeople. The experiences allowed me to determine what I liked, and didn’t, as I continued on my career path. The great thing about sales is that it really teaches you to be honest with yourself because any reward you get is due to the effort you put in.
What in your background prepared you for your career path?
One of my earlier jobs in sales was entirely new business development. I’d be cold calling or knocking on doors to get interest and an appointment, then presenting and trying to close the account. The frustrating thing about this was that I would spend the time to build trust and develop a relationship with a person and company, only to hand them off to a service department once the contract was signed. I would be off to the next prospect. When I got into fence, the trust and relationships that were developed in sales have carried on for years.
What appealed to you about Pexco and how has your role changed over the past 17 years?
Before I joined Pexco, I was a customer of theirs. Pexco’s PDS slats were a known commodity and the company itself was well-liked and respected due to the excellent service they provided. Joining their sales team was a fresh start that allowed me to meet new customers in different parts of the country, and gain new appreciation and exposure to the industry as a whole. Over the years my role changed as more responsibilities were given to me. These new challenges allowed me to develop additional skills which gave the company the confidence to make me the Director of Sales in 2018.
Pexco operates at the intersection of manufacturing and distribution. How has that dual perspective influenced your sales approach?
As a company, Pexco services many different markets with our various extruded plastic products. Each market has a different path to the consumer. In fence, we manufacture privacy slats and other chain link enhancements which are sold through wholesale distribution. These wholesalers work closely with their customers and do a terrific job selling our products in the marketplace.
From your vantage point, how has the fencing industry evolved over the past decade?
The impact of Amazon and online shopping has put additional pressure on all levels of the supply chain. It has changed habits, where most people are doing research before they buy. The buyers may be miseducated, but they’re not uneducated. Along with this, we’ve seen more of an emphasis on developing and maintaining relationships. When you walk the floor at FenceTech, for example, you see more kegs of beer and fewer sections of fence. People matter.
What differentiates Pexco from competitors?
Our PDS Fence Products brand is celebrating its 50th year of service to the industry. We’re pioneers and innovators in chain links enhancements; most of the different slat styles used today were originally sold under the PDS brand. We know our products will last because we’ve been around to see it. Our onsite engineers in the plants in Athol, Massachusetts, and Tacoma, Washington, have always maintained strict guidelines for quality and consistency while also seeking ways to improve the products. Our competitors don’t have our history. Some have their products made in China or have them produced by another third party.
What do you look for in a strong sales professional, and how do you build a team that consistently delivers results?
Over the years, our sales team has always come with experience in the industry. Pexco’s privacy slats are essentially an accessory to a chain link fence, so fencing knowledge is critical. Our customers look to us to be the experts with how the slats will work or fit with different types of chain link. Along with the industry knowledge, a sales rep needs to be organized and efficient. We have a small team that covers the entire U.S. and Canada. Finally, they need to be patient. We’re growing customers, not just sales. Since we sell through distribution, and not direct, we need to be a partner to the wholesalers and give them the tools to help them get sales.
What accomplishment in your career are you most proud of?
I’ve had to overcome a terrible Boston accent to be able to communicate with people from across the country. Seriously, for a while, people had no idea what I was saying, but at least they were intrigued with how awful it sounded to remain interested.
Have you had any mentors in your career and what impact did they have on your success?
I’ve been fortunate to have worked for some respected leaders in the industry – both locally and nationally – who helped me tremendously with my development. When I joined Master Halco I worked for Joe Meade, who was well known throughout the Boston area for his knowledge, fairness and honesty. Then at Pexco, it was Richard Brooks, an AFA Hall of Famer, and Kathy Fritch, the “Slat Queen." They built the foundation for what the fence business at Pexco is today. Their kindness and caring for customers as people developed relationships that turned into long lasting friendships.
What do you enjoy most about your job and working in this industry?
There are so many good people in this industry that the job is always enjoyable. This goes beyond the customers I work with on a daily basis. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know a lot of people who work in different areas of the fence world who we don’t sell to or buy from, yet they are still some of my favorite people.

The Four Leadership Qualities Expected by Followers
by Michael Reed executive director, American Fence Association
Leadership is often described in terms of strategy, vision, or character. But at its core, leadership is much simpler and personal. Leadership is a relationship. It only exists when people willingly choose to follow someone else. That relationship between leader and follower is built over time through daily actions, consistent behavior and shared purpose.
Researchers have spent decades studying what followers expect from leaders. Across industries, cultures and generations, the results have been remarkably consistent. When people are asked to describe the characteristics of leaders they admire, four qualities rise to the top: honest, competent, inspiring, and forward-looking.
These are not personality traits reserved for a select few. They are characteristics that can be developed, demonstrated, and strengthened over time.
Honest: The Foundation
Honesty is the starting point. Without it, leadership cannot take root. Followers want leaders they can believe in and leaders whose words match their actions.
Honesty shows up in everyday moments. It means keeping commitments, admitting mistakes and communicating clearly, even when the message is difficult. When leaders consistently do what they say they will do, credibility grows. When credibility grows, trust follows.
Competent: Confidence in Capability
Followers also want leaders who are capable. Competence gives people confidence their leader can guide them through challenges and help them succeed.
Competence does not mean knowing everything. It means being prepared, making sound decisions, and committing to continuous learning. In a rapidly changing industry, competence is demonstrated by staying curious, seeking new knowledge, and adapting to new realities.
Inspiring: Connecting People to Purpose
Great leaders inspire others by helping them see the meaning behind their work. Inspiration is not about charisma or dramatic speeches. It is about passion, commitment and belief in the mission.
When leaders show genuine enthusiasm for the work and the people they serve, that energy spreads. Teams become more engaged. Individuals take pride in what they do. Customers feel the difference.
In our industry, inspiration often comes from understanding the importance of our work. We protect homes, secure businesses and create spaces where families and communities can thrive. When leaders connect daily tasks to that larger purpose, they create motivation that lasts.
Forward-Looking: Providing Direction and Hope
Followers also want leaders who can see what lies ahead. Being forward-looking means helping people understand where the organization is going and why it matters.
In times of change, uncertainty, or growth, leaders provide perspective. They help their teams prepare for new challenges and recognize new opportunities. They do not simply react to the present. They guide others toward the future.
A forward-looking leader creates confidence that tomorrow can be better than today.
The Link to Trustworthiness and Credibility
These four characteristics, honest, competent, inspiring and forward-looking, are more than leadership expectations. They are the building blocks of credibility.
• Honesty builds trust.
• Competence builds confidence.
• Inspiration builds commitment.
• Forward-looking leadership builds hope. When leaders consistently demonstrate these qualities, followers respond with loyalty and engagement. Teams perform at higher levels. Relationships grow stronger. Organizations become more resilient.
Leadership in our industry is not defined by position or authority. It is defined by the strength of the relationship between a leader and their followers. That relationship is sustained by trust. Trustworthiness and credibility are not given automatically. They are earned over time, one decision, one conversation, and one action at a time.
Think about the leaders in your life. How well do they exemplify these four characteristics? Consider your own leadership journey. What would the followers in your life say about how you stack up?
Your reflections on the leader/follower relationship can change how you think about how you interact with others to create impact.
About the Research
These characteristics are drawn from the ongoing research of James Kouzes and Barry Posner in the Characteristics of Admired Leaders study. Their work is based on surveys from more than 150,000 participants worldwide, including leaders from business, the military, government, healthcare, and academia. Participants were asked to rank more than twenty leadership characteristics based on the qualities they most admire in leaders.

20 YEARS of Building Strength
TWO DECADES OF LEADERSHIP, GROWTH, AND INNOVATION
This year, Iron World Manufacturing proudly celebrates 20 years in business — a milestone that reflects disciplined growth, strategic expansion and an unwavering commitment to quality across the residential, commercial and industrial fencing markets.
Founded by Richard Stellabuto, Iron World began with a simple but powerful vision: build a manufacturing company that could deliver dependable products, improve industry processes and serve customers with integrity.
Today, Iron World has grown into a nationally recognized manufacturer, serving projects across the United States while continuing to expand its product lines and operational footprint.
FROM LEARNING THE TRADE TO BUILDING A COMPANY
Stellabuto’s journey in the fencing industry began long before Iron World Manufacturing was founded.
In 1991, Stellabuto began working alongside his father-in-law, Jack Long, who owned and operated his own security fencing company. During those early years, Stellabuto immersed himself in every aspect of the business, learning not only the craftsmanship behind fencing systems, but also the operational discipline required to run a successful company. As his experience grew, so did his vision.
In 1998, his father-in-law, Jack Long sold his business, and Stellabuto recognized opportunities to improve product quality, streamline manufacturing processes and strengthen relationships within the fencing
Iron World's Main Office
Founder, Richard Stellabuto
community. With that vision in mind, he made the decision to branch out on his own.
In 2003, Stellabuto founded JL Ornamental. With determination and limited resources, he launched the business in a 5,000-square-foot facility, made possible with the help of a friend who provided the space to get the operation off the ground.
In the early days, Stellabuto managed every aspect of the business: selling, manufacturing the products, coordinating outside powder coating and managing billing and bookkeeping. Day and night, he built the foundation of what Iron World would become.
In 2006, he officially rebranded the company from JL Ornamental to Iron World Manufacturing.
A key contributor to the company’s long-term success has been Ray Shifflett, whose 30 years of industry experience has played an integral role in the company’s growth and market presence. Stellabuto notes, “I wouldn’t have done it without Ray.”
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES AND SEIZING OPPORTUNITY
Like many companies launched in the mid-2000s, Iron World soon faced its first major challenge.
In 2008, during the economic recession, the company encountered the same uncertainty that many manufacturers across the country experienced. But in a defining moment, Iron World secured a $7 million project, an opportunity that dramatically accelerated the company’s growth and validated the strength of its approach.
From that point forward, Iron World continued expanding its operations, refining its manufacturing capabilities, and strengthening relationships throughout the fencing industry.
In 2012, Iron World Manufacturing relocated across the street and expanded with offices in North Carolina and Indiana.
EXPANDING CAPABILITIES ACROSS RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL MARKETS
Over the past two decades, Iron World’s product portfolio evolved significantly. Today, they offer a comprehensive range of fencing and gate systems designed to meet the demands of products across all sectors:

Our slide gates are engineered for long-term performance and constructed from high-grade 6005-T5 aluminum for maximum strength and durability.
A VISION ROOTED IN HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION
Stellabuto credits much of his work ethic and drive to the values instilled by his family while growing up. Raised by supportive parents, especially his active and athletic father, Stellabuto spent much of his youth playing soccer and competing in team sports. Through these experiences, he developed the discipline, determination, and competitive spirit that would later shape his leadership style.
Those same principles, hard work, perseverance, and teamwork, continue to guide Iron World Manufacturing today.
LOOKING AHEAD TO THE NEXT CHAPTER
As Iron World Manufacturing celebrates its 20th anniversary, the company remains focused on strategic expansion, operational excellence and strengthening relationships throughout the fencing industry.
Reflecting on the journey, Stellabuto remains focused on the future. “When we started Iron World, the goal was to build a manufacturing company that customers could trust; not just for one project, but for the long-term. Our growth over the past 20 years has been driven by consistency, accountability and investing in the right people and processes. We’ve never taken shortcuts on quality, and that commitment continues to guide everything we do.”
Iron World extends its sincere appreciation to its contractors, dealers, developers, and industry partners who have supported the company over the past two decades.
Twenty years is a significant milestone - and the next chapter of growth is already underway.

ProWood TrueFrame Joist Now Available Across Great Lakes and Midwest States
ProWood, a leading manufacturer of pressure-treated lumber and part of UFP Industries, Inc., is expanding availability of TrueFrame Joist. Previously available in Colorado, TrueFrame Joist is now available across Great Lakes and Midwest States.
TrueFrame Joist is built to deliver consistently straight, stable performance, helping deck builders reduce jobsite variability and achieve predictable results build after build.
“Much of the deck framing process involves managing variability,” says Luke Snyder, product manager at ProWood. “TrueFrame Joist reduces that variability so crews can move faster and install with greater confidence and predictability.”
Each TrueFrame Joist is manufactured from #1 grade Southern Yellow Pine, infused with proprietary next-generation stabilizer additive, kilndried after treatment (KDAT) for improved stability and easier handling, and factory-planed to within 1/16" for flat edges and consistent sizing.
TrueFrame Joist is:
• Backed by a Limited Lifetime Warranty
• Manufactured to meet UC4A Ground Contact standards
• Available in nominal 2 x 8"-, 2 x 10"-, and 2 x 12" lengths of 12, 14, 16, and 20 ft. (Actual sizes: 1-1/2 x 7", 1-1/2 x 9", and 1-1/2 x 11")
• Color-infused for lasting beauty with no staining or sealing required at installation
“TrueFrame Joist bridges the gap between traditional treated lumber and other framing alternatives,” says Ashley VanderWall, brand marketing manager at ProWood. “It’s a practical solution for quality-focused deck builders who want elevated performance without an over-engineered substructure.”
Jonathan Moeller, owner of Colorado Custom Covers and Decks, was an early TrueFrame Joist adopter and says the product is changing the pressure-treated industry.
“Uneven ground is common for many of the decks we build, so creating a safe, level substructure can take a lot of time on the jobsite,” Moeller sys. “TrueFrame Joist is durable and makes framing easier, lighter, and faster.”

Management Corner Turn Customer Complaints into Your Best Marketing Tool
No one likes getting a customer complaint. In the fencing business, where timelines, materials and expectations must align, issues happen. But the most successful contractors understand this: how you handle the problem matters more than the problem itself.
A complaint isn’t just a problem; it’s a signal. It offers direct insight into where your operation can improve. Every complaint points to a process that can be refined.
Start with response. Speed matters. A delayed reply often frustrates customers more than the issue itself. A same-day call, even without a solution, goes a long way. Let the customer know you’ve heard them, you’re looking into it, and when they can expect a follow-up. That alone begins rebuilding trust.
Next is ownership. It’s easy to explain why something wasn’t your fault, but customers expect accountability from you. Whether the issue stems from a supplier, weather delay, or field miscommunication, the best contractors don’t deflect, they step in, take control and solve it.
Then, go a step further. Fix the issue quickly and completely, and add a small extra touch, such as a follow-up call, a handwritten note or a minor adjustment to their bill. That extra effort often turns a frustrated customer into a loyal one.
High-performing companies also track complaints. If you’re seeing repeated issues, whether its measurement errors, install inconsistencies, scheduling gap, you have a system issue that needs attention.
Just as important, train your team on how you want them to respond to complaints. If a crew member is the first point of contact, they need to respond calmly and professionally. One dismissive interaction can undo a lot of goodwill.
Handled correctly, a complaint becomes an opportunity. Customers who feel heard and respected are more likely to trust you, refer you and return for future work.
The goal isn’t perfection; it’s responsiveness, accountability and continuous improvement, because reputation drives growth.
Don’t just fix the problem. Fix the relationship.
byTom Luby owner of Profit Builders International
Recently we have seen some very unsettling global events in South America and Europe, but the US Israeli attack on Iran maybe takes the cake. Holy Cow, what is going on and how will this affect me and my fence company?
Researching for this edition of Fence News, I looked back at all the articles I had written for the fence industry—there have been hundreds. The first I found appeared in December of 2001 in World Fence News, and it was almost 30 years ago. In 1996, I began my first consulting engagement in the fencing industry with Miller Fence Company in Worcester, Massachusetts.
As I looked back, I realized how much has changed in the world and in our fencing industry, and yet how much has stayed the same. That first article came out just a few months after the great tragedy of September 11, 2001, so naturally terrorism and the world stability was on everyone’s mind. In an instant everything changed so much on that horrible day, including our attitudes on the world and our place in it.
Now, some 25 years later, we have neutralized one of the great architects of terrorism, the former Ayatollah Khomeini, and much of his ruling party. Just a few short months ago we removed the dictatorial head of Venezuela, Nicholas Maduro, and who knows what is next. With Cuba looming in a precarious position and Trump seemingly willing to do whatever he wants on the world stage.
With that in mind, let’s look back more than 25 years ago at what I wrote this in that December 2001 article:
9/11, Afghanistan, the Taliban, Sadam Hussein, the Israeli middle-east conflict, tension between nuclear powers India and Pakistan; these are not easy times for anyone and obviously not advantageous times for business growth and expansion. So, what do we do? On a personal level, I doubt that any of us can answer these complex questions, even our greatest politicians seem to be stumped. I believe all any of us as private citizens can do is pray for peace in the world and hope that cool political heads will prevail.
But what about our companies? Do we stick our business “heads in the sand” and wait for the proverbial smoke to clear? This is actually the most important time to pay close attention to our business
Crazy World
and our futures. In spite of the terrible things going on around us we must carry on and take care of business in the very literal sense of the word. Now is a time for business action, not complacency. If your fence company is to survive in these tumultuous times you must be aggressive in your approach to the marketplace and use as many sales weapons (don’t we all wish these were the only kind of weapons) as you can muster.
In many areas of the country, fencing is becoming increasingly important because of the world-wide political climate of terrible unrest, and the influence that has on the public, as well as government and municipal interests. Also, the sale of aesthetically attractive fencing products, such as vinyl and ornamental aluminum is on the rise. The public has a cautious wait- and-see attitude, and most people are a bit reluctant to spend money on non-essentials. But these days, more people are considering fencing not to be a luxury item, but an essential one.
The economy and our leading economic indicators all run in cycles. This has always been, and will always be, true. The trick is to be able to predict when the changes occur and to take advantage of these changes, whether they are positive or negative.
But these cycles are very difficult to predict. Sometimes they last only a few years and other times they can last 10 or even 15 years. What will this coming year have in store for us economically? Are we coming out of our current economic downturn?
That really depends on several factors, not the least of which is the situation with Iraq (now Iran). War and the economy offer a terrible dichotomy. If we do go to war with Iraq (again, now Iran), and it does seem likely that we might, our economy will be positively impacted. In the course of our entire history, war has always, always been good for the economy.
All these factors combined tend to indicate to me the possibility of a pretty good year in 2002 for the economy in general and the fencing industry in particular, in spite of the ever-increasing possibility of terrorism and climate of disaster that looms over us all.
As we can clearly see, terrorism is still a big threat in this country and around the world. The Department of Homeland Security, which did not exist before 9-11, has been de-funded and lines at airports are out of control. Mainly because of these
very real concerns, security and perimeter fencing will surely be strong for the foreseeable future. Fencing really has become almost a vital industry these days.
Fence clients I have spoken to, both installers and suppliers, are all more than a bit weary about future oversees supply issues. Costs will almost surely go up; that has already begun in many fence product types. Fuel is constantly rising and supply of certain items can be questionable. On the brighter side, however, demand will be strong. Remember, as we did some 25 years ago, hang in there. We will prevail in the long run.
Tom Luby has helped hundreds of contractors within the fence industry achieve success with maximum profitability and efficiency. With over 25 years of experience consulting in the fence industry, he developed the “Roadmap for Success”, a program that can help contractors succeed. The program is available on CD, along with the sales and marketing guide “The Close” by contacting him below:

by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP executive vice president, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute | 2022 Inductee,
Okay, okay, okay. Enough already. I know that I am not supposed to talk about prices or pricing in a forum like this. From an association viewpoint (CLFMI, AFA, ASA, etc.), we have to be careful with antitrust laws. From an industry standpoint, we have also be careful about setting customer, contractor and supplier expectations. From a regulatory perspective, we need to avoid the appearance of discussing implied guarantees, etc.
So, why am I talking about prices?
I am not talking “prices,” but I am talking about the importance of being aware of what is going on in the fencing industry right now that will be influencing prices in the marketplace in the next year or two.
Uncertainty. The fencing industry is entering a period of heightened uncertainty because:
• Over the next two to three years, contractors will face a mix of economic, operational, and technological pressures that will require both adaptability and strategic planning.
higher wages, which in turn squeezes margins, especially for smaller contractors. This skilled labor shortage also impacts project timelines, quality and growth potential.
Material cost volatility/uncertainty is adding to pressure and anxiety. Fencing relies heavily on steel, aluminum, wood and PVC—all of which have experienced price fluctuations due to up, down, legal/illegal, and ever-changing tariffs, supply chain disruptions, and global instability. Rising fuel and raw material costs increase the price of key inputs like metal and plastic products. Even when contractors can pass costs on to customers, unpredictable pricing complicates bidding and erodes profitability, particularly on fixed-price contracts.
Technology adoption is becoming unavoidable - and adding to the uncertainty. Digital tools, automation, and AI-driven project management are increasingly essential for staying competitive. However, smaller fencing companies may struggle with the cost and learning curve associated adopting with these technologies. At the same time, customers are demanding faster timelines, better communication, and more customized solutions—raising expectations (and prices?) across the board.
Many of these price and cost issues overlap: labor shortages drive costs up; material volatility strains margins; and economic uncertainty affects demand. Pricing strategies need to be more advanced than materials cost + labor cost + plus profit margin = price. A better understanding of key factors affecting prices, and a plan to deal with the uncertainty they will present will help you be confident that your price is right.
• As I am drafting this article, the United States is at war. There are no adjectives (limited action; short-term; etc.) that lessen the impact of that statement. Nothing creates more uncertainty than war, especially one with no specific ending identified.
Labor shortages remain the most persistent challenge. Like the broader construction sector, fencing contractors are struggling to find and retain skilled workers. An aging workforce, fewer new entrants into the trades, and tighter immigration policies are all contributing to a shrinking labor pool. Manpower shortages always manifest themselves as a push for
Demand uncertainty is becoming a growing concern. Higher interest rates and affordability challenges have slowed residential construction, a key driver of fencing demand. Builder sentiment has weakened, and project pipelines in some segments (i.e., large solar fields) are shrinking. While infrastructure and data center construction offer pockets of growth (and, in some cases, organized NIBY opposition), fencing contractors must factor uneven demand across sectors and regions into their pricing strategies.
Regulatory and policy pressures are increasing the timeline for projects, thereby locking in prices while project costs increase. Tariffs, “Buy American” provisions, and evolving local regulations can delay projects and raise costs. Compliance requirements, particularly for public or high-security projects, are becoming more stringent, requiring contractors to invest more time and administrative resources.
As executive vice president of Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute for 38+ years, Mark Levin is also an author and avid promoter of the fence industry. He believes in the successful leadership qualities he promotes, including listening, delegating, consensus building, communications and effective decision-making.

In Memoriam
Barry James Marrs, 80, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away peacefully on February 27. Barry was born on May 16, 1945, in Los Angeles, California, to Twila Jeanne (Lucas) and Burton Johnson Stamps. Twila later got remarried to James Marrs who raised Barry since he was a boy.
Barry lived his life filled with purpose, hard work and dedication to his family and friends including his SCS Family. In 1967 Barry entered the fence industry with a company called Master Fence Fittings which later became Master Halco. To further his prospects for growth, Barry earned his MBA from The Claremont Graduate Center; later becoming president and CEO of Master Halco. In 2006 Barry and Karen purchased Security Contractor Services, which is celebrating its 26th year in business! With almost 60 years in the fence industry, Barry was proud to be called a “Fence Man”. Barry was featured as a “Top of the Chain” leader in the March 2023 issue of Fence News.
Those who knew Barry knew he was a man of integrity, honor and commitment with a great passion for history, the Denver Broncos, the USC Trojans, playing golf and enjoying a good cigar!
