Fencing Canada’s Largest Photovoltaic Solar Farm When most people think of energy and Alberta in the same sentence, they think of oil and gas. However, while fossil fuels are still a big part of the Alberta economy, the province is fast becoming a leader in sustainable energy too. One big example of this is the Travers photovoltaic solar farm, which is the biggest one of its type in Canada, and one of the biggest in north America. Of course, when you’re building a behemoth like this, there’s a lot of very expensive and delicate equipment involved, and the owners and operators needed to protect it from animals, vandals, and other threats. When you’re building the biggest solar farm in Canada, that means you need a fence, and who better to turn to than Canada’s largest fence company? Many companies would have been daunted by the 38 kilometer / 23.6 mile fence line, particularly with the supply chain challenges we’ve all faced over the past few years, but RiteWay Fencing took it in their stride. “This is exactly what we’re geared to do,” says Brent Keller, senior commercial estimator at the Calgary head office, and the project lead on this job. “We were able to use our buying 8

MAY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

power to secure the huge amounts of pipe and wire we needed for the project, and because we manufacture chain link and barbed wire, we could manage material supply without too many challenges.” The industrial chain link fence with barbed wire was installed quickly by Rite-Way’s top industrial fence teams, and the project finished on time and on budget, and, critically, without any safety incidents. “As a COR certified contractor, we’re meticulous about our safety record on projects like these,” says Keller. “Not only because our clients demand it, but also because we owe it to our people.” Even so, installing this much chain link fence in a remote part of Alberta did not happen without a few challenges along the way. Working on a site under construction, crews had to co-ordinate with earthmoving operations, which required careful management to ensure that they were always working on the right areas of the site. At the height of the project, Rite-Way Fencing had 12 crews on site, working 12 hours per day on a 12 day turnaround for about six months. “Had we not had a large complement of

highly qualified and skilled industrial fence installers on hand to work on this project, we would not have finished by the time the ground froze,” says Keller, “but thanks to our capacity, we had 90% of the work done in time, and are just finishing up the last of the non-excavation and concrete related work now.” Fortunately, Rite-Way doesn’t only have the manpower to tackle a project like this. They were able to equip the site with skid steers, fence hogs, post vibrators and barbed wire dispensers, all of which allowed the work to move at a record-breaking pace through the summer and beyond. The energy landscape in Alberta might be changing, but for over 30 years, Rite-Way Fencing has been providing high security fence systems for critical infrastructure like this, and they’ll still be doing it for many years to come. How Technology is Changing the Way Contractors Run Their Business Technology has proven to be a saving grace for many contracting businesses. While the country slowed down during the pandemic, it was technology that kept the world going. It allowed businesses to operate from almost anywhere, while keeping people and teams connected. Now, more than ever, contractors are seeing the need for implementing technology and software into their businesses to stay competitive. “Fencing estimating software is giving contractors their time back by providing better communication with customers, increasing efficiency with their team, while also increasing the opportunity to receive payment faster,” explains Jeanteil Livingston, communications manager with JobNimbus, a project management software company. JobNimbus reports three top ways technology is changing the contracting business:

SAVE VALUABLE TIME WITH AUTOMATIONS For business owners, time is the most precious commodity. “With the right technology, you can create time-saving automations that benefit your entire team,” she explains. “For example, by automating your team’s schedules, they’ll receive appointment reminders and have the ability to check the status of a job with the push of a button.” Automations can be set up for all aspects of a business, including: • Customer notifications • Task checklist • Invoice and payment notifications • Referral requests • Marketing emails

KEEP CONSTANT VISIBILITY ON EACH PROJECT Technology makes it possible for businesses to continue to manage projects effectively, no matter the situation. Even while out of the office, software for contractors can allow communication with customers, creation of bids, and scheduling appointments. “Whether you’re on another job, working remotely, or enjoying a well-earned break, contractors can rest easy knowing that their business’ platform is accessible at any time,” Livingston says.

STREAMLINE FINANCIAL PROCESSES Cashing in on hard work has never been easy. But, with the help of technology, accounts receivable is easily streamlined. No more mailing invoices and waiting for checks. “Industry software now automatically sends out invoices and keeps track of payments received after a job is completed. It simplifies the payment process, allows for more reliable record keeping and keeps finances in tip-top shape,” she explains. From office management to leads for the sales team, fencing software can work overtime so that business owners don’t have to. To learn more, visit www.jobnimbus.com.

It’s not so much about building fences as it is helping people. In 2018, Brett Myers had served 18 years an active-duty serviceman with the US Navy as a biomedical engineer. Hurricane Florence, a category 4 storm, hit his town of Jacksonville, North Carolina with winds of 140 miles per hour, causing devastation throughout its path. “Our home was destroyed. Our town was destroyed,” Myers says. “My wife and I purchased a new home and we had three dogs at the time. We urgently needed a fence. There was only one local fence company at the time, and our experience with them was difficult, to say the least. My wife and I made three different appointments with them, and they never showed up to any of them.” Myers took it upon himself to learn how to build a fence. After building his own, he built neighbors’ fences, their friends’ fences, and it just continued from there. “I continued doing as many fences as I could, while still on active duty, because our area was so devastated. It was up to us to figure out how to rebuild our community and that’s what we did,” he says. In March of 2020, he reached 20 years with the military and retired, devoting all of his time now to his fencing business, Anchor Fencing 22. “The 22 refers to the unfortunate statistic of the veteran suicide

rate of 22 veterans a day,” he explains. “I employ as many veterans as I can. If I can work with them, day in and day out, get to know them and help them, I have hope that they won’t harm themselves.” Anchor Fencing 22 has steadily grown, receiving great recommendations from previous customers. “We focus on quality construction and friendly customer service. We’ve created a network here in Jacksonville with several realtors and house flippers who keep us busy,” Myers says. While most of his work is residential, he also deals with commercial and government projects. “I learn something from everyone I work with. Things are falling into place as people get to know our company and we continue making helpful contacts throughout our region,” he says. “It’s not so much about building fences as it is helping people. This fencing company helps me fulfill my desire to help veterans by giving them a job and helping them provide for their families.” Even though he was a biomedical engineer by trade, “I can’t imagine doing anything else besides beautifying Onslow County and surrounding areas with one quality fence at a time.” To learn more, visit www. anchorfencingllc.com.

AcoustiBlok Reduces Traffic Noise for School Playground THE CHALLENGE Ecole Claire Fontaine, a private preschool in Los Angeles, California, reached out to AcoustiBlok for assistance in reducing heavy traffic noise coming into their school playground. Studies have found that students in schools next to very busy roads, highways or railroads fall as much as one year behind by the time they reach the 5th grade due to the noise disruptions and negative impact on concentration during class time. The school wanted to prevent this for their students. Background on Background Noise in Classrooms Background noise for both permanent and relocatable classrooms is a critical issue for our education system. On any given school day, thousands of students across the country are unable to understand 25 to 30 percent of what’s said in their classroom. The reason: excessive noise and reverberation interferes with their ability to clearly hear their teacher. The result: a decreased level of concentration, an increased level of stress, and an overall reduction in the level of learning. SOLUTION School leadership from Ecole Claire Fontaine discussed AcoustiBlok’s Patented AcoustiFence with one of the company’s experienced consultants, Natalia Chudy, who has a background in the medical field, including a Master’s in Mental Health, post-

14

MAY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

graduate certification, training in biologics and orthopedics, as well as OSHA training. The school decided to purchase AcoustiBlok’s Patented AcoustiFence green at a 12-foot height and attach it to their existing chain-link fence around the playground and the school. AcoustiBlok has been awarded a 20-year patent on the AcoustiFence, which is made with a propriety formula. “The beauty about our fence is that it doesn’t just block sound, like virtually all other sound barriers,” explains Chudy. “In frequencies of 50Hz and below, the heavy limp Acoustifence material actually begins to vibrate from low frequency sound waves. In essence, it is transforming these sound waves into mechanical movement and internal friction energy.” Laboratory tests indicate that this transformation process inhibits these lower frequencies from penetrating Acoustifence, reducing their level by over 60 percent relative to the human ear. In addition, Acoustifence becomes an absorbent material in these frequencies with test results showing an NRC (noise reduction coefficient) as high as 0.78 (with 1.00 being the max). “This means Acoustifence not only reduces sound as a barrier, but it also acts as an acoustical absorbent material in very low frequencies, as opposed to reflecting those frequencies back like most other barriers,” adds Chudy. The AcoustiFence attaches quickly and easily to existing chain-link or wooden fences with heavy duty ties and grommets which are

manufactured into the fabric. This allows for the AcoustiFence to be portable and taken down or relocated if necessary. AcoustiFence has certified lab tests from Riverbank Laboratories, one of the most accredited acoustical laboratories in the nation and has been tested at a hurricane center to withstand 202 mph wind-loads. RESULTS Chudy says after installing AcoustiFence, the school achieved a 75% reduction in perceived volume. “We need to combat the increase in noise pollution as a society, as it not only inhibits children from learning and processing information, but may cause an inaccurate diagnosis of ADHD and need for medication.” Learn more about AcoustiBlok’s Patented AcoustiFence at www.acoustiblok.com.

Installing Gate Stops on Swing Gates Installing gate stops on a new or old gate is one of the least expensive and most valuable improvements a fence contractor can make. Costing only a few dollars, simple-to-install gate stops have a simple function – to prevent the gate from opening or closing too far. Over-extending a gate may cause extreme damage to gate, adjacent fence, hinge(s), or gate closer. Installing an inexpensive gate stop is a cheap insurance policy against gate damage. Think of most residential or commercial doors, and you’ll quickly visualize wood or metal trim installed on the inside of door jambs to prevent the door from closing past its proper point. Likewise, doorstops are installed to prevent swing doors from crashing into adjacent walls, or opening too far and ripping doors off hinges. If these weren’t there, hinges would break, fasteners shear, and possibly doors split. Who doesn’t have a doorknob imprint on drywall from a missing, or poorly adjusted door stop? According to Chad Hoover with Hoover Fence Company, the practicalities of installing a gate stop can be challenging. “We often don’t have adjacent walls to simply mount to, hinges do not come with built-in stops, and the wind outside can be fierce – ripping gates off hinges each year. Fence contractors and gate installers will need to consider mounting a gate stop on concrete surface if one exists or setting a post in the ground specifically to use as a gate stop.” For many in the fence industry, Hoover says aluminum self-closing hinges, polymer self-closing hinges, stainless steel self-closing hinges, spring-activated gate closers, and hydraulic gate closers constitute a good deal of the budget to install a high quality self-closing gate. Many of the fence specialty gate hardware items require gate stops in the open and close position not only to function properly, but also to maintain warranty coverage from the manufacturers. Solutions do exist for fencers though, according to Hoover. He offers some insight. For wood fence gates, ripping down a cedar or matching wood picket and tacking to the inside door jamb, at least on latch post, can be an extremely inexpensive solution over a gate being closed too far, ripping lag screws out of gate. Some wood gate latches may have an inherent gate stop built it, physically preventing gate from closing too far. Wood fence gate stops are available specifically for wood gates which install quickly with screws. For chain link gates, gate holdbacks and chain link fence gate stops can serve two useful purposes: to prevent the gate from opening too far (this will usually force hinges to pivot and need adjusting) and to hold the gate in the open position to allow pass-thru without the gate closing. Chain link hinges are sturdy, but usually rely on wrap-around, bolt-on methods for installation. For vinyl swing gates, vinyl fence gate stops specifically designed for vinyl gates are available in materials matching popular polymer vinyl gate hinges; some even have built-in gate handles. Ornamental steel swing gates and ornamental aluminum swing gates, gate stops are plentiful, since flat surfaces are usually involved. Simple face mount, jamb mount, and separate post mount gate stops can prevent damage to gates and hardware when installed properly. “Simply put,” says Hoover, “ installing inexpensive gate stops for the open and closed position on swing gates is a ‘must-do.’” Hoover Fence Company is a family owned and operated business based in Ohio, serving customers across the United States. CPSC Report Shows Child Drownings Remain High Fewer Children Took Swim Lessons During COVID-19 Pandemic, Putting Them at Risk

Pool Fencing & Hardware Pools provide hours of fun, but proper fencing, latches and gate hardware must be included or a tragic disaster could occur. The wide variety of pool fencing materials available can enhance a pool’s appearance, creating a pleasing atmosphere. Dive into this section and learn more about existing options as well as the importance of the contractor when it comes to pool safety.

The most recent annual drowning and submersion report released in by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) last year reminds families to make water safety a priority, particularly as they return to community pools and resume warm-weather activities near water. Child drownings remain the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages one to four years old. “As we enter the summer months, parents and caregivers must be mindful of the pandemic’s impact on their children’s swimming ability and water safety skills,” said CPSC Acting Chairman Robert Adler. “CPSC’s latest report confirms that most child drownings involve children under the age of five, whose limited experience around the water due to recent social distancing restrictions could put them at greater risk of drowning. With fewer children attending swimming lessons during the pandemic, it is critical to refresh these and others the life-saving skills, while practicing increased vigilance both anywhere children are swimming and during non-swim times as well.” While the report shows that number of pool-or spa-related, hospital emergency department-treated, nonfatal drowning injuries decreased from 2019 (6,300 injuries) to 2020 (5,800 injuries), CPSC advises that the changes are not statistically significant. From 2018 to 2020, 78 percent of nonfatal drowning injuries occurred among children younger than five years old. The lower number of drownings is likely the result of limitations on summer activities – including group or public swimming – due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As American families return to public recreational activities and in-person gatherings in the warm-weather months, parents and caregivers can follow Pool Safely’s simple steps to help prevent fatal and nonfatal drownings and keep children safer: • Never leave a child unattended in or near water, and always designate an adult Water Watcher. This person should not be reading, texting, using a smartphone or be otherwise distracted. In addition to pools and spas, this warning includes bathtubs, buckets, decorative ponds, and fountains. • If you own a pool or spa, install layers of barriers to prevent the unsupervised child from accessing the water. Homes can use door alarms, pool covers, and self-closing, self-latching devices on doors that access the pools and on gates of four-sided fences. • Learn how to perform CPR on children and adults. Many communities offer online CPR training. • Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim. • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments. • Ensure any pool and spa you use has drain covers that comply with federal safety standards and if you do not know, ask your pool service provider about safer drain covers. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children ages one through four and the majority of the children who drown in swimming pools most commonly gain access to the pool area through a faulty fence or gate.

Safe Gates Help Save Lives

D&D Technologies® has partnered with the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) to establish the Check Your Pool Gate campaign during May. The initiative was created to remind pool owners of the vital need to ensure pool fences, gates, latches and hinges are secure, adjusted correctly, and incorporate multiple layers of protection to help secure the pool area from unauthorized entry. Every pool owner should be confident they have a safe pool zone. The fence industry is vital to the mission of reducing child drownings, playing a crucial role in communicating the need to Check Your Pool Gate and providing instructions on how to help ensure a pool gate is safe. “We encourage companies within the fencing industry to support the Check Your Pool Gate campaign to help improve the safety of communities, customers and employees, and most importantly, to help save lives,” explains Jim Paterson, senior vice president of sales and marketing with D&D Technologies. D&D has made it easy to get involved in Check Your Pool Gate month by creating all the materials needed to promote the campaign. • Follow the D&D Technologies’ social channels and share their posts. • Announce Check Your Pool Gate Month on your website. • Create a link on your website to the D&D Technologies Check Your Pool Gate landing page, hosted on D&D’s website, the landing page contains all the information on Check Your Pool Gate month. • Send an eblast to your customers communicating the Check Your Pool Gate month message. • Take advantage of the free materials from D&D: www.ddtechnologies.box.com/v/cypmonthmaterials • Materials include videos, images, banner ads, eblasts, counter signs and flyers. “Our goal with Check Your Pool Gate month is to educate pool owners and the general public about improving safety and encourage them to check their pool surroundings not once a year, but regularly,” says Paterson. A few minutes is all it takes for pool owners to check their pool fences and gates. This simple routine done regularly could help save the life of a child. For more information or questions on how to support the Check Your Pool Gate month campaign contact info@ddtechusa.com. For more information on pool safety and compliance, visit: www.ddtech.com and www.ndpa.org. It’s critical to check your local pool codes for compliance, as local codes may vary. 20

Mesh Fence is a Great Choice for Pool Safety Mesh pool fences also offer the flexibility of being either permanent or removable, allowing it to be put away when it’s not needed. As with any fence, it’s important that a mesh pool fence be installed correctly to prevent young children from gaining access to the pool. The gate is the most important part of any fence system, including a mesh pool fence. The purpose of a self-closing pool gate is to add a layer of protection. It is always advisable to ensure that a pool is securely locked when not in use, but there may also be times when an adult has to suddenly leave the pool. A self-closing pool gate will latch behind them and can be key-locked in necessary.

BENEFITS OF MESH POOL FENCING INCLUDE Made for swimming pools. These types of pool fence were designed for swimming pools, with security features that make them unique, such as climbresistant fabric, self-closing gates, unrestricted visibility and more. Self-closing pool gate. Gates are self-closing, self-latching, and key-locking, which is an additional security feature to prevent accidents. Guardian Pool Fence Systems also has a U.S. Patent on their climb-resistant pool gate design. This was the first gate ever designed for mesh fencing. The lack of a top crossbar on this gate is one of 19 features protected with their patent. To date, the company has shipped and installed over 60,000 of these gates aroundn thw world. Does not obstruct anyone’s view. Pool owners can see through the fence when they are outside the fenced-in area, and they can also see outside the pool area when inside the fence. Quick installation. Mesh pool fencing can usually be installed in a day or less. Easy maintenance. This type of fence is easy to maintain and long-lasting. Aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Most homeowners like mesh pool fences because they enhance the overall look of their property. Different mesh colors and pole colors can be chosen to match the overall design of an outdoor space. Guardian also offers the only “No Holes Pool Fence System” when a homeowner cannot or does want to drill holes into their deck. This pool fencing system is the only one of its kind in the world and Guardian Pool Fence Systems has two U.S. Patents on this invention. Guardian recommends this fence for those people who have children visiting occasionally, are renting a property and can’t drill holes, or those who are planning to move their fence to a new location at a future date. The No Holes Pool Fence provides a sturdy base for the poles to be installed in. These bases are all connected to each other and are filled with water. Each base, when filled with water, weighs 65 pounds. There are 4 bases for each 12 feet of fence. The weight of these 4 bases is approximately 260 pounds plus the weight of the fence, making it practically impossible for a small child to penetrate or move. Safety Benefits of Glass Pool Fencing

Pool fencing prevents children and pets from accessing the pool area unsupervised, giving homeowners peace of mind. It is also mandated as a safety measure for all commercial properties, such as apartments and hotels. Glass pool fencing has become a hot trend in recent years. In addition to its beauty, tempered glass offers unique safety benefits that make it as excellent pool safety fencing choice. Aquaview Fencing is the leader in glass pool fences across North America.

HERE THEY EXPLAIN THE TOP SAFETY BENEFITS OF GLASS POOL FENCING: 1 Tempered glass is strong and durable. Aquaview glass pool fences are made with ½-inch-thick tempered safety glass. This glass is six times stronger than regular glass, making it nearly impossible to shatter. It is the same type of glass used for shower doors, windshields, or any other surface that could be exposed to impact. The production process is part of the same procedure used in making bulletproof glass. In the rare event of breakage, tempered safety glass breaks into small, rounded beads instead of sharp shards. Overall, Aquaview’s frameless glass pool fence system is engineered to withstand winds up to 90mph and can handle a lot of pressure. These fences are built to last a lifetime. 2. Climb-resistant panels. The glass panels used in Aquaview’s fencing provide a slick, non-climbable surface. There are no grooves or divots for curious children to try and use as a foothold. These are available in a variety of heights to meet pool code requirements, typically 4-feet or 5-feet, depending on your state. 3. Glass gate closes and latches automatically. The most important safety feature of any fence is the gate. Aquaview glass gates are self-closing and self-latching to ensure the pool area is always secured. Keyed latches allow the option to lock the gate when the pool is not being used. An added bonus, the gate hinges have “soft close” functionality to avoid slamming. 4. Clear views to supervise children. Accidental drowning is the number one cause of death for children under four years old. Of these fatal accidents, about 76% occur in residential pools. While a safety barrier is incredibly important, there is no substitute for adult supervision. Young children must be supervised at all times when playing in or near the pool. This is one area where glass fencing clearly outshines the competition. The transparent panels are nearly invisible, allowing clear views of all activities in and around the pool so you can supervise at all times. Visit www.aquaviewfencing.com for more information.

Responsible Pool Ownership

Selecting the right hardware for your pool fence increases security while offering peace of mind

While owning a pool can bring countless hours of relaxation and fun, it also comes with a great degree of responsibility. With most accidents occurring when children or pets gain unsupervised access to pools, it is imperative to control entry into a pool area. This can be done by installing a code-compliant fence with a gate that uses a child-resistant, locking safety latch.

Barrette Outdoor Living’s self-closing Butterfly Hinges meet pool safety codes and feature self-closing functionality with tension adjustments.

Barrette Outdoor Living’s self-closing Heavy-Duty Wrap Hinges meet pool safety codes and feature three-way adjustability, allowing for customization of resistance and speed of gate closure.

SELECTING THE RIGHT SAFETY LATCH FOR POOL GATES Once the necessary due diligence is handled to ensure the pool fence and gate are code compliant, selecting a self-closing, locking pool safety latch should be the next priority. “It is important for homeowners to carefully look at the placement of their pool area and consider every point of access,” says Jason Duffy, product manager at Barrette Outdoor Living. “Wherever there is an opportunity for a small child or pet to enter the area, whether through a fence gate or a back door that leads to a patio around the pool, a locking safety latch should be installed and positioned high enough that a child is unable to reach it.” Barrette Outdoor Living’s patented Locking Pool Safety Latch is self-closing, key-lockable and features a strong magnet. Set within the latch mechanism to protect it from the elements, the internal magnet provides long-lasting, dependable performance. The latch also has surpassed more than one million cycle tests to further ensure reliable openings and closings. Available in two sizes – standard (21 3/8” H) and compact (15 3/8” H) – Barrette Outdoor Living’s Locking Pool Safety Latch can be used with vinyl, aluminum, steel, wood, and chain link fencing. Made of a durable, polypropylene-based polymer with rust-resistant stainlesssteel components, Barrette Outdoor Living’s Locking Pool Safety Latch is designed for strength. The latch also undergoes rigorous weather testing to ensure reliability, even in the most extreme conditions.

Barrette Outdoor Living’s Locking Pool Safety Latch — available in standard and compact sizes — have surpassed a one million cycle test.

ADDITIONAL POOL GATE SAFETY TIPS Proper installation of pool latches calls for the opening mechanism of the latch to be placed at least 54” above the ground. This keeps the top of the latch well out of a child’s reach. Your pool gate must also be installed to open out, away from the pool area. For more information, check with code compliancy details specific to local areas. In addition to a self-closing latch, self-closing hinges, like Barrette Outdoor Living’s Wrap Hinges for use with vinyl fencing or Butterfly Hinges for use with aluminum fencing, area also required to meet pool code. These tension-controlled hinges work in tandem with the latch to ensure gates automatically close behind when someone exits or enters the pool area. To be code compliant, pool gates cannot use a cross brace. A cross brace may give small children a “step up” to reach the top of a pool latch or an easy way to climb over the gate into the pool area. Barrette Outdoor Living’s vinyl and aluminum gates do not use a cross brace. “It’s also a good idea to purchase a gate latch and hinges from the same company that manufactures your pool fencing and gate,” says Duffy. “This gives you a single point of contact for any warranty claim and provides a one-stop shop for all your fencing needs.” Lastly, it’s important to do routine maintenance to makes sure the gate stays aligned and that all hardware is functioning properly. Before opening the pool each season, check that the gate is level, oil hinges and tighten screws on all hardware.

Fence Professionals Are Important Key in Pool Safety Summer is right around the corner. Warm weather and summer fun go hand-in-hand with swimming and lounging by the pool. This time of year, homeowners all over the country are making plans to open their backyard pools to enjoy quality time with their family in the months ahead. While a backyard oasis can be fun for the whole family, it also carries risks that must be addressed. “Drowning is the single leading cause of death for children ages one to four and remains a leading cause of unintentional injury death for older children. It is estimated that for every fatal drowning, another four to five people are seen in the emergency department for non-fatal submersion injuries,” explains Adam Katchmarchi, Ph.D., executive director with the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA). “Drowning is a silent epidemic, and most people don’t realize it.” The NDPA recommends the use of multiple layers of protection to prevent drowning. This concept involves using multiple prevention strategies together to reduce the risk of an accident. Layers of protection include the use of barriers such as four-sided isolation fencing, supervision that is constant and capable, gaining water competency by learning to swim, the use of tested and approved life jackets when appropriate, and being prepared if a drowning occurs. “No single layer is enough to prevent drowning, but the use of multiple layers working together can reduce the risk,” Katchmarchi explains. A startling fact is 70% of toddler drownings happen during non-swim times. These are times when a child isn’t expected to be near the water. “Many parents don’t realize how quickly drowning can happen. Children can drown in as little as 30 seconds,” he says.

Drowning is often a silent event. Parents expect to hear a call for help if their child is in danger, and that doesn’t usually occur with drowning. “Hollywood hasn’t done us any favors, as parents expect that drowning will resemble what is often portrayed in the movies and on TV, which is often not the case. Because of this,” he says, “parents need to think about what layers of protection they need to have in place during both swim times and non-swim times.” Physical barriers are a critical layer for any residential pool, especially for any home with children. Four-sided isolation fencing that creates a barrier around all four sides of the pool is highly recommended. A perimeter fence that surrounds the entire yard is great for keeping neighbors out, but still leaves the pool exposed to any children who make their way to the backyard from inside the home. Fencing around pools should be at least 4ft. in height (or more) and include a self-closing, self-latching gate. The NDPA is a proud partner of the American Fence Association and The Fence Group. Through this partnership, the NDPA hopes to better educate fencing contractors and experts on the important role they play in drowning prevention and water safety. “Fencing is a critical layer of protection for any pool and every fence professional can champion water safety with the clients they serve,” says Katchmarchi. “Fence professionals save lives through their work and educating homeowners on the importance of water safety can ensure no other family faces the tragic devastation that drowning can cause.” Visit www.ndpa.org for more water safety information and to learn how to get involved.

A Contractor’s Guide to Understanding Codes for Pool Fencing Building codes are designed as a mechanism for safety and protection. This is especially true considering the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) regarding mounting heights, created with the intent of deterring access for unaccompanied children. “In recent years, there have been some confusing exceptions between IBC and ISPSC regarding these mounting heights for hardware on doors and gates serving swimming pools,” says Jen Klassen, co-owner of DAC Industries. “So, we wanted to clarify those requirements, and introduce you to some of DAC Industries’ products to ensure your gates are self-closing, self-latching, and self-locking, allowing you to install both entry and exit hardware at the same height.” THE CODE ISPSC made changes to its code in 2021, addressing the requirement of self-closing and self-latching doors and gates on pools. On self-locking gates at public pools/spas, the latch release was clarified to state that operable hardware must be mounted between 34 and 48 inches above the finished floor. Another important factor to keep in mind is that most public pools have a pool deck that accommodates over 50 people, meaning panic hardware is generally required. THE PRODUCTS There are several different types of panic bar hardware and accessories available today. Some can be accessed with a card reader/access control system or combination lock, while others simply require a keyed entry. “You can determine the right solution for your project based on your individual building needs and local regulations,” Klassen says. The following are items DAC Industries manufactures and sells that are compliant with both IBC and ISPSC that can be mounted on an existing gate and are all compatible with the 6045 Superior Exit Bar Kit, allowing easy installation on a gate:

Storeroom function lever (DAC# 6110) Outside lever trims provide security for all types of installations. Built to be as durable as the panic devices, these heavyduty trims will stand up to heavy use and abuse. • Free exit with panic bar • Key required to enter

Electrified Control trim (DAC 6200) The 6200 Electrified Control Trim is an effective way of interfacing electric release with mechanical locking. The trim can be key activated or electrically-released by any access control system or remote release • Free exit with panic bar • Access control releases lever and allows for entry • Key override option

Electric Strike with DAC Adjustable Mount (DAC 11100/ HES 9600) Stylish, windstorm rated, surfacemounted solution with superior strength and durability, paired with DAC adjustable mount for easy installation on a gate. • Free exit with panic bar • Access control releases strike and allows for entry • Key override can be added, if desired

The Electric Latch Retraction panic bar is growing in popularity within the fence industry. This is designed for entrance and exit doors/gates exposed to exterior environments where remote unlocking, remote dogging, or access control is desired. Since the release is in the panic bar itself, this pairs nicely with a storeroom function lever or the new DAC pull, both provide a key override option.

“When it comes down to designing a pool fence, the most critical step is to check your local building code to make sure everything is in compliance,” Klasen emphasized. To learn more about DAC Industries or their products, call (800) 888-9768 or visit www.dacindustries.com for additional information.

An Overview of Pool Fence Regulations Trying to figure out exactly what kind and size of fence you need to meet residential pool code requirements can be confusing, and homeowners are often looking to contractors to have the answers. Are there national standards? State requirements? What about local code? The bad news is there is not one definitive guide to provide these answers. The good news is that Superior Plastic Products has put together the following overview of regulations and codes to help simplify this issue when installing a pool fence. First, there are no federal laws about swimming pool fencing. States make their own laws, and local municipalities can add additional regulations. Many states base their laws on the building codes that come from a respected non-profit group, the International Code Council (ICC). The ICC and other non-profits who might create guidelines don’t have the power to enforce their codes, but governments or homeowners’ associations (HOAs) often take these standards into consideration when creating enforceable laws. So what does the ICC say about pool barriers? Here is the residential code they apply to inground and above ground pools, spas, and hot tubs. • Fences should be 48” (four feet) in height at minimum. Some states or municipalities require 5-foot fences. The measurement should be done on the side facing away from the pool. • The gap between the fence and the ground should be 2 inches or less. • There should be no opening in the fence that would allow a 4-inch (diameter) sphere (or larger) to pass through. • If the fence is made of horizontal and vertical members, there are specific requirements in place, depending on the distance between the tops of the horizontal members: If the tops of horizontal members are less than 45 inches apart: • Horizontal members must be located on the pool side of the fence. • Spacing between vertical members or within decorative cutouts must be 1.75 inches or less (in width). If the tops of horizontal members are more than 45 inches apart: • Spacing between vertical members must be 4 inches or less. • Spacing within decorative cutouts must be 1.75 inches or less. • Any diagonal members (such as lattice fence) may not form openings greater than 1.75 inches. • If you use chain link fencing, the mesh opening must be a 1.25-inch square or less (unless slats fastened at the top or the bottom of the fence reduce openings to 1.75 inches or less). Code for gates include these requirements: • Gates should open outward, away from the pool. • Gates should be self-closing and have a self-latching lock. • When the release mechanism on the gate latch is less than 54 inches from the bottom of the gate, it should be at least three inches below the top of the gate on the side facing the pool. This is so a child can’t reach up (or over) and release the gate latch. • Gate and fence should have no openings greater than ½ inch within 18 inches of the gate, so that children cannot reach through a gap and release the latch. The ultimate goal of all of these codes is to prevent a child from being able to go over, under, or through a fence, or sneak in through a gate. Gaps in the fencing or openings in decorative cutouts should be small enough that they cannot provide a convenient hand-hold or foot-hold for a curious and determined child. And gates that are not fully latched (or are easy to unlatch) are the quickest, simplest way to gain entry. The professionals at Superior Plastic Products caution anyone installing a fence to not rely solely on what you read online regarding code and regulations. These are subject to change. Always check the requirements of your state or municipality before installing a fence. And everyone needs to remember that fences, even fences that meet pool code requirements, are not a substitute for adult supervision and vigilance, nor are they a guarantee of safety. FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT LARSEN INNOVATIONS

A problem solver by nature, Charlie Larsen with Larsen Innovations has found a way to incorporate his knowledge of the fencing industry with his creativity of developing new products. Read on to learn how he has combined these two qualities into a groundbreaking business. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH? I was with Master Halco for 30 years. I started there as a summer job unloading trucks. It turned out to the be a long summer; when I left 30 years later, I was vice president of sales and marketing. WHAT LED TO YOUR DECISION TO START YOUR OWN COMPANY? Master Halco was a terrific place to work, and I had the privilege of working with some of the industries’ best people. Over the years, I missed being able to interact with customers and create new opportunities. While I was considering what my next chapter might look like, I began to work on some product ideas. After developing our V-Squared™ fence panel, I pitched it to several of the major manufacturers in the industry. Not surprisingly, they were vested in their current equipment and product offering and reluctant to change, but I found a manufacturer that could make it and was willing to partner as my supplier. The shipping efficiency of V2™ made it viable to produce overseas and although I was first focused on dog kennel panels, that shipping efficiency became particularly important in the temporary fence market where the panels are handled over and over. I incorporated in 2005 and started shipping our first panels in 2006. 34

WHY DID YOU MAKE THE CHOICE TO INCLUDE “INNOVATIONS” IN YOUR COMPANY NAME? I’ve always felt that problems were really opportunities, so I have always tried to probe further when a customer mentioned a problem. I would, at times, observe salespeople glossing over a customer’s complaint rather than peel the onion to come up with a solution. Helping customers solve a problem is the most satisfying part of business for me.

YOU HAVE SEVERAL PATENTS IN YOUR NAME. WHAT ARE ONE OR TWO INVENTIONS THAT YOU CAME UP WITH THAT YOU’RE ESPECIALLY FOND OF? The best-known patent is PostMaster that I invented when I was at Master Halco; I led the team that did the development work. That product became hugely successful for them. My most recent product, our PupProtect™ add-on puppy panel has the potential to eclipse PostMaster’s success when it is fully scaled. At Larsen Innovations, I’ve been developing a catalog of intellectual property, having it manufactured and selling to early adopters to establish proof of concept.

YOUR WEBSITE SHOWCASES PRODUCTS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO IMPROVE FENCING, BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION SERVICES. WHAT ARE A FEW OF THE PRODUCTS YOU OFFER? In addition to the V-Squared temporary fence panels and PupProtect product I’ve mentioned, we offer our Accura™ line of cantilever gate hardware including our patented ProAction™ roller for square frame gates.

WHAT HOBBIES DO YOU ENJOY? My wife, Kendra, and I enjoy traveling, going for rides along the beach walk, spending time with family, most of which is spread between California, Washington, and Colorado. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT OWNING THE BUSINESS? Early on, I had a customer ask if we could do something and somewhere etched in my mind was the reflex to question if I could. Then it hit me, I can do whatever I choose since I own the business.

WHAT IS YOUR MANAGEMENT STYLE? I think most of the people that I have had the pleasure to work with and perhaps help them in their careers would say that I am tough but fair. This is probably connected to always looking for ways to improve things which manifests as challenging those I work with to constantly improve.

Extraordinary solutions.

by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP Executive Vice President, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute 2022 Inductee, American Fence Association Hall of Fame

The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming! You would have to be of a certain age to understand the meaning of the title of this article. It’s actually the title of a movie from the 1960’s about a Russian submarine that gets stuck on a sandbar off of the New England coast. It was a comedy, but it played off the general EastWest paranoia that was an everyday part of life in America during the height of the Cold War. I thought of it again when reading the latest news coming from Ukraine, regarding the invasion of Russian forces there.** Of course, this current version of “the Russians are coming” is not a comedy in any way, it is an international tragedy. But it might also be something every company in the fence industry needs to take heed of. Not that I think the Russians are going to invade the U.S. with tanks and bombs. However, they may very well invade the U.S. with the highest level of cyber terrorism ever seen. When we mention cyber security as a big issue in the fence industry, there can sometimes be a tendency for some of the thousands of smaller, family-run businesses in the industry to feel we are not talking to them. They think the companies that must worry about cyber theft and cyber security are the big companies, the manufacturers, the large, multi-state contractors. That is not the case, at all. The majority of cyber-attacks are aimed at small and medium-sized companies. In 2020, two thirds of all small businesses reported that they had been attacked by malware. Most of these attacks come through email, and – pay attention, contractors – frequently they are attached to invoices and billings. We all know that the fence industry has no shortage of “war stories” about identity theft, too. There is virtually no company in our industry that has not already been affected by a breach in some level of its cyber security. The concern now is not what has happened in the past few years, it is what does the future hold. Here is where the war in Ukraine and the state 40

MAY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

of the fence industry cross paths. Russian cyber criminals, and the Russian government, have been targeting U.S. companies, government entities, the military, and the general public for years. It is not always about the money, although that is certainly part of it. In a recent article, the New York Post noted, “Russia appears to have officially declared cyberwar on the U.S., taking what’s been described as preliminary steps at crippling its banking system and possibly other major industries.” What is most alarming is that with the war in Ukraine going so badly for the Russian military, there is no question that the Russian government is going to step up its cyber-attacks here in the U.S. to the next level with even the smallest of companies. Ransomware (where the attacker blocks access to vital company information until a ransom is paid) already costs businesses billions of dollars annually. That does not even consider the cost to fix the problems afterwards and the down time of employees while making the system secure again. It is time for every company to do a checkup of their cyber security readiness. This means not just the technical side of things, but also the human resource side of things. Mistakes happen; new employees do not know all the company rules on electronic communications; cyber theft can also come from within a company; access to passwords and confidential information must be limited; backup systems must be in place throughout the company; the number of outside vendors who install software must be kept to a minimum.

With all the things we must think about every day just to run a safe, profitable business, it is hard to see any connection between what’s happening in a far-off country like Ukraine and running a fence company. But what is happening in Ukraine is causing a tidal wave of problems across the world, not just political but also economical, technological, and humanitarian. The Russians, and their flunkies, are not just coming, they are already here. **Full disclosure, my mentioning of the current Russian invasion of Ukraine is not coincidental, it is personal. One hundred years ago, my grandfather was taken from his home in a small town south of Kiev (Kyiv) and forced to serve in the Russian army. Most conscripts had to serve two years, but because he was a Jew, he was told he had to serve seven years. He eventually deserted and returned to his village to quickly marry his girlfriend, my grandmother, then they escaped by driving a troika (sled) through the night. They were still teenagers. They survived and later made it to America, but not long after they left, the Russians instituted a pogrom and wiped out every Jew in the town, including both of their families. Following the current war in Ukraine reminds me how little has changed there in over a century. It may seem distance to some, but not to me.

t n e m e g a r n e a n M or C INVESTING TIPS FOR NON-INVESTING TYPES

The first step is the hardest. That’s certainly true when it comes to investing money. Where, how, when, for how long, what if I lose the little I have? These are some of the questions floating around, making many of us want to shelve the idea and just go back to work. Investment advisors say getting started is the hardest thing to do. There’s fear of the unknown and intimidation that other people know more and worry that you’ll get taken advantage of. Yet, you know investing will help you have solid financial growth over time. The sooner you begin, the more time you have on your side. If you hesitate because you’re not the money type, you don’t enjoy financial spreadsheets, or talking about percentages, net gains, and stocks, you may want to partner with a financial advisor. The best first step for anyone, and especially for someone new to investing, is to understand your goals, your vision for the future, and your concerns. An advisor will discuss those things with you and put a plan together that will help you maximize opportunities in line with your goals as well as help you conquer your fears. It’s important to remember, no matter how uninformed or fearful you are, there are consequences for sitting on the sidelines too; including a smaller nest egg in the long run. Investing is a tool for building wealth, but it’s not only for the wealthy. Anyone can get started on an investing program. You’ll want to avoid putting all your eggs in one basket, which is another way of saying diversification is good. Stock market index funds are an easy, diversified, low-cost way to invest in the stock market. When investors buy an index fund, they get a wellrounded selection of many stocks in one package without having to buy each stock individually. One of the most well-known financial experts, Warren Buffett, who has a net worth of over $127 billion, says the average investor need only invest in a broad stock market index to be properly diversified. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index, you may have 46

MAY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

heard it referred to as the S&P 500, is one of the best-known indexes because the 500 companies it tracks include large, well-known U.S.-based businesses representing a wide range of industries. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is another index fund. This one has a collection of 30 stocks the editors of the Wall Street Journal decide represent the U.S. economy. One of the key advantages of investing in index funds is they remove the challenge of trying to choose wise investments individually; their broadness means several sectors are doing well, while others may dip low, but overall, your funds continue to grow. Emotions are often a big obstacle to getting started with investing. When stocks fall – and they will fall – you’ll lose money and no one wants that. But, they will also gain, and you’ll feel like celebrating. The rise and fall of the stock market shouldn’t determine your attitude that day. You have to look

beyond the daily numbers and develop a broad, long-range perspective. Investing in the stock market to get rich quickly is absolutely the wrong approach. Starting when you’re young is always a good idea. People in their 20s and 30s are able to take more risks because time is on their side. Unfortunately, many young people either don’t think about investing, or they think they don’t have enough money to invest. If you wait until you have a comfortable lifestyle, maybe in your late 40s or 50s, you’ve lost so many valuable years for growth. Even if you have $100 a month in your 20s or 30s, put it into some kind of investment. A small start is still a start. Over time, add to it. You’ll develop discipline for saving and you’ll see it increase over the years. Consequently, if you’re in your 40s or 50s and haven’t invested, it’s not too late. Start wherever you are and get some advice from a financial adviser you trust and who will work with you.

Saint-Gobain & CertainTeed Renew Decade-Long Partnership with Homes For Our Troops Saint-Gobain North America and its building products subsidiary CertainTeed LLC have renewed the company’s partnership with Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) as its exclusive provider of roofing, insulation, gypsum, siding, fence and railing products. Over the past decade, CertainTeed has donated $3.1 Million of building products to help HFOT build and donate more than 200 specially-adapted custom homes nationwide to severely injured veterans. The partnership renewal comes only months after Saint-Gobain announced its global Grow and Impact strategy, which includes prioritizing corporate social responsibility and volunteerism in communities where the company does business. “The debt of our country’s men and women who have selflessly served, and as a result sustained injuries, can never be paid back in full. But it is our honor to do our part and help support these veterans and their road to independence through our HFOT partnership and the depth of what our products can provide in each of their homes,” said Michael Rosenblatt, United States Navy veteran and Vice President of Operations for CertainTeed Roofing. “Regardless of where and when you served, there is an unbreakable bond, sense of comradery and connection that will last a lifetime. Whether you served or not, have a family member or friend who is currently serving or who is a veteran, our partnership with HFOT allows everyone at our company the opportunity to give back to those that have given so much.”

54

MAY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

“CertainTeed and Saint-Gobain have been an unwavering partner with HFOT since 2013,” said Bill Ivey, United States Army veteran and Executive Director of HFOT. “Their generous donations of roofing, drywall, siding and insulation have been key to placing 200 Veterans and their families into specially adapted homes across the United States. With this tremendous support, together we are providing the foundation on which these great Americans can rebuild their lives. We look forward to continuing our partnership with this outstanding company and its superb employees to get all of our severely injured veterans into their own specially adapted, custom home.” Saint-Gobain North America currently employs more than 900 veterans of the United States armed forces, many of whom are currently members of the company’s Veterans Employee Resource Group. The company encourages veterans to apply for its current job openings. About Homes For Our Troops Since its inception in 2004, Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) has been building and donating specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post9/11 Veterans, to enable them to rebuild their lives. HFOT homes help to restore the freedom and independence that these Veterans have sacrificed while defending our country. Comfort and customized adaptations help to enable the veterans to focus on their family, recovery and rebuilding their lives.

The Retirement of the Roof Rake King by Tom Luby

The Roof Rake King is retiring; long live the Roof Rake King. You’re probably asking what does a Roof Rake King have to do with fencing? Well, let me tell you a story. Back in 1996, I consulted with my first fencing contractor, Joe Miller, from Miller Fence in Worcester, Massachusetts. His company, Miller Fence, was originally founded by his dad in 1967. Joe Miller and Miller Fence are pioneers in the fence industry. Joe is finally stepping down and turning over the reins to his daughter, Kim, also a veteran of the fence industry. Kim began working for her dad at age 14. Suffice it to say after three generations, fencing runs in the Miller family. Joe is an innovative fencer. Five or six years ago, Worcester, Massachusetts had a horrible snowstorm, dumping feet, not inches, of snow on rooftops all over the area. The heavy snow was crushing some roofs, and many were collapsing. Joe happened to have an excess of vinyl fence scrap materials, and, with his vivid imagination, he fashioned a large vinyl rake attached to a long vinyl pole, and voila, he invented a safe and effective solution to removing the excess snow from the roofs all over New England. Joe was an innovative leader in the fence industry, always thinking outside the box to solve problems for his beloved customers. Joe’s legacy will live on with Kim, who is also a problem solver and innovator in the fencing community in New England. Joe serves as a past president of the local New England chapter of the American Fence Association and has earned numerous awards from the fence industry and community in general over the past half century. Just a few of his lifetime achievements include enumerable service awards and distinguished distributor awards from major vendors like Bufftech, Anchor Fence, Colonial Aluminum, the Builders Association, and the American Fence Association. Joe was inducted into the American Fence Association Hall of Fame in Phoenix, Arizona in 2018. Joe is active in his community and in 1991, was elected president of Worcester Executives. He was named “Executive of the Year” in 1989 and in 1993, he was presented a key to the city of Worcester. Between 1981 – 2020, Joe served on the board of directors for the Better Business Bureau of Central New England. He was also on the board of the Lithuanian Charitable Society (Maironis Banquet Facility) in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of Worcester Junior College and received his bachelor’s degree in economics at McPherson College in Kansas. Shortly after college, he joined the United States Navy and served from 1970 to 1973. Prior to going into the fence business, Joe was employed at Guaranty Bank and Trust of Worcester from 1973 to 1976. Joe left the bank in 1976 after the passing of his father, Joseph Miller, the founder of Miller Fence, to devote himself to the family-owned fence company. In his spare time, he enjoys spending quality time with his family, three grandchildren, and playing golf. He is actively involved in raising money for local charity organizations. Miller Fence Company has increased its level of excellence and superior reputation through the years, due primarily to Joe’s dedication and business acumen. Since opening in 1967, Miller Fence Company has grown tremendously and is proud to be the leading fence company in Central Massachusetts. Joe, I’ve known you for more than 25 years. You are a great guy and a dear friend. I wish you all the best in your retirement. Your knowledge and great achievements will live on with your capable daughter, Kim. All hail the king!
