Waterproofing the ledger board is a critical step in preventing moisture damage and ensuring the structural integrity of a deck over time. To fully protect this essential component, the maker of Trex® Seal™ Ledger Tape has introduced a new butyl tape engineered specially for use behind the ledger board. Measuring 22-inches wide, Trex® Seal™ Sub-Ledger Tape creates a continuous water-tight seal between the ledger board and the house wrap to prevent water from infiltrating the house. “Ask any contractor where a deck is most likely to fail and, chances are, they’ll point to the ledger board,” says Dave Kile, CEO of IBP, LLC, which manufactures and markets deck waterproofing products through a licensing agreement with Trex Company. “If not correctly installed and protected, this single element can be the downfall of a deck’s structure. By adding this extra layer of moisture protection, professional deck builders can prevent water from getting trapped between the ledger board and the exterior wall of a home, reducing the likelihood of wood decay and increasing the lifespan of the deck.” Inspired by the success of the award-winning Trex Seal Ledger Tape, the new sub-ledger offering features similar performance features and benefits in a wider product designed for this specific application. Reinforced with an aluminum liner, the 22” wide, self-adhering, butyl-based tape fully covers the back of the ledger board and integrates with the house wrap to provide a continuous seal for optimal protection against moisture and water penetration. It also creates a water-tight seal around ledger fasteners. “When water seeps behind a ledger board, it can lead to mold, rot and wood decay that can negatively impact not only the structural integrity of the deck but the exterior of the home as well,” says Kile. “By using Trex Seal Sub-Ledger Tape in conjunction with Trex Seal Ledger Tape, builders can fully protect the ledger board on all sides to ensure homeowners optimal longevity and enjoyment of their decks.” Trex Seal Sub-Ledger Tape is designed for easy application with a convenient triplerelease liner that allows installers to bend and set it in place without it flexing back like other flashing tapes. It’s 22” width replaces the need to use multiple strips of tape, saving valuable time on the job site. Additionally, it is AAMA 711-13 compliant and is backed by a 25-year warranty. “Whether constructing a new deck or replacing an existing one, installing Trex Seal Sub-Ledger Tape is a simple process that takes minutes but can add years onto the life of a deck,” adds Kile. Trex Seal Sub-Ledger Tape expands the Trex® portfolio of moisture protection products, which also includes Trex® Protect Joist & Beam Tape, Trex® Protect Rim Joist Tape, Trex Seal Ledger Tape and the Trex® RainEscape® deck drainage system. All five products are designed to prevent moisture penetration and premature deterioration of wooden substructures and can be used with any decking material. For more information about Trex Seal Sub-Ledger Tape, visit TrexSeal.com.

Gate Safety Experts Warn of Cold Weather Effects on Gates Cold weather can affect electric gates. It’s important to inspect the hardware and electronics to ensure they are working properly, according to Gate Safe. Gate Safe is a non-profit organization focused on putting a stop to any further accidents or fatalities occurring because of an unsafe electric gate or barrier installation. They offer the following recommendations: • Ensure photocells are frost-free, as any obstruction can prevent the gate from opening and closing properly, putting safety at risk. • Check the safety on the gate; that it is working as it should. Pressure sensors behave differently in the cold; they might need more force to operate effectively. • Keep hinges lubricated to prevent freezing, but only do so in dry conditions. • Make sure that any snow or ice buildup is cleared from swing and sliding gates to enable safe and reliable operation. Gate Safe was established in 2010, in the wake of the tragic deaths of two children crushed by automated gates, in separate accidents. The organization is in the UK. The team has a combined experience of the gate industry spanning over 100 years. To learn more, visit gate-safe.org.

PVC & COMPOSITE Composite fencing offers function and flair. From installation considerations to new hardware options, we have what you need to know to provide the right product for the job.

Privacy Fence Innovations from Trex Fencing FDS In the ever-evolving landscape of home design and outdoor living, privacy fences have become an essential element, offering seclusion, security, and aesthetic appeal. Trex Fencing FDS, a renowned leader in composite fencing, has taken a bold step forward by introducing innovative products that redefine the concept of privacy and fences. “Traditionally, privacy fences were associated with a somewhat utilitarian appearance, often comprising wood or vinyl materials,” says Rick Ashcraft, general manager with Trex Fencing FDS. “We recognized the need for a modern, high-performance, lowmaintenance, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing alternative. With a commitment to environmental responsibility and product durability, Trex Fencing FDS has introduced revolutionary materials and designs that stand out in the industry.” He provides an overview of some of these new products: COMPOSITE MATERIALS: A SUSTAINABLE REVOLUTION Trex Fencing's commitment to sustainability is evident in its use of high-performance composite materials. Unlike traditional wood or vinyl, Trex's composite fences are made in the USA from a blend of reclaimed wood fibers and recycled plastic. “This innovative approach is founded on the premise that ingenuity can help us extract value from what was once seen as waste. Today we are the largest manufacturer of high-performance, low-maintenance, eco-friendly fencing,” says Ashcraft. The result is an innovative fence that not only offers the classic warmth of wood but also boasts the low-maintenance advantages of composite materials. Homeowners can enjoy the aesthetic appeal of a wood-like finish without worrying about issues like rotting, warping, or the high cost of constant upkeep. 22

MARCH 2024 | FENCE NEWS USA

LONG LASTING BEAUTY Trex Fencing FDS understands that privacy fences should complement diverse architectural styles and homeowner preferences. In response to new trends in housing designs, they have introduced new horizontal fence designs, that add beauty and modern beauty to any outdoor space. Ashcraft says homeowners can choose from a variety of heights, colors, and styles, ensuring their fence seamlessly integrates with the overall design of their property. The unique picket interlocking system also facilitates easy installation, reducing the overall time and labor involved. Trex's innovative design choices empower homeowners to create fencing solutions that are as unique as their individual tastes. “There is a reason Trex Fencing FDS is one of the leaders in privacy fencing,” adds Ashcraft. “We offer the most innovative, technologically advanced composite fencing in the marketplace today. Trex Fencing's commitment to innovation ensures that privacy fences are not only practical but also contribute to the visual appeal and eco-consciousness of modern living spaces. In choosing Trex, homeowners are not just investing in a fence; they are embracing a transformative approach to outdoor privacy and design.” For more information, visit trexfencingfds.com.

The Beauty and Benefits of Vinyl Ranch Rail Fencing In centuries past, the general purpose of installing a fence in North America was more to mark the perimeter of one’s land rather than to protect it. To distinguish perimeters and save money at the same time, farmers and ranchers typically resorted to ranch rail fencing, favoring this type of barrier for its simplistic, economic design. Composed primarily of elongated rails—with spacious gaps in between—these panels required less lumber to build and could be constructed without professional assistance. The same principles apply today, which is why ranch rail fencing remains a common installation at farms, ranches, cabins, and country homes. Railed barriers are frequently used for fencing in livestock as the animals cannot so easily become trapped in the panels as they are more likely to do with other types of fencing. Also known as split rail fencing, ranch rail was once an exclusive wood product. Today, Todd LaVigne, owner/CEO of American Fence Company, explains that many contractors specialize in ranch rail made of vinyl “We highly recommend vinyl ranch rail fencing. It provides the same attractive aesthetics and property-marking functions as wood, and also provides some benefits unique to its structural integrity and longevity.” He provides a closer look at the benefits of PVC: RESISTANCE TO WATER DAMAGE. One of the drawbacks of wood fencing is preventing damage resulting from long-term exposure to water. When the fence becomes drenched with rain, melting snow, overspray from watering and other sources, the water absorbs into the wood and expands/contracts inside in accordance with temperature changes. During winter, for example, the trapped liquids freeze into ice, metastasizing and pushing apart the inner foundation of the wood as it does. Depending on the severity, the end result can encompass cracks, bulges, and even split boards. To avoid this issue, most fence owners resort to painting and staining their fences each year. This helps keep water trapped on the surface of the wood but adds to expenses. These repetitive expenses can be avoided by constructing a ranch rail fence out of water-resistant materials such as vinyl. As a nonabsorbent material, water runs off the vinyl surface. SUPERIOR STRENGTH. Even if the purpose of installing a fence is to mark property boundaries versus safeguarding it, the goal remains to install a durable, long-lasting material. A high-quality vinyl fence boasts strength five times that of its wood counterpart—meaning greater resilience to everyday impacts. This is one of the reasons split rail remains a common choice for cattle farms: even when livestock brushes against the PVC, the rails and posts remain sturdy and in place. The strength of vinyl endures even with significant changes in temperature. The only significant change in the freezing grip of winter is increased flexibility in the fence panels. And even then, the panels themselves shouldn’t break unless subjected to a significant amount of force, such as a vehicle crashing into the fence. LONG-LASTING BEAUTY. Vinyl ranch rail fencing remains in demand nationwide primarily for its aesthetics appeal. Another advantage in this aspect is PVC retains natural beauty much longer than other fence types. In addition to its resilience to chipping and cracks, vinyl fence will retain its original color, with the only natural change over time typically being a slight reduction on its natural sheen.

RESISTANCE TO INSECT DAMAGE. Vinyl is impervious to insect-related damage from termites, carpenter ants and similar insect species that feed on wood products. “The ease of installation also remains a big part of the popularity of vinyl ranch rail,” adds LaVigne. “These fence panels can be put in a matter of days – or even hours – depending on the scope of the project. The key to longevity is choosing a high quality PVC material.” Learn more at theamericanfencecompany.com.

NAVIGATING THE FUTURE: The Rise of Composite Materials for Marine Docks and Decking Amidst the harshness of the marine environment, selecting the right materials for your dock or deck is critical. Concerns such as rot, warping, mold, and mildew threaten traditional options such as wood and risk replacement after only a few years. Proper research and selection can make the difference in ensuring longevity, sustainability, and resilience against the relentless forces of salt water, moisture, and fluctuating weather conditions. While many options are available, composite lumber has risen above the fold to offer a compelling blend of durability, environmental sustainability, and aesthetic versatility. Chris Sanders, director of sales for Lumberock,® covers several critical factors that must be considered to ensure you are making the right choice when choosing a brand that will withstand these harsh elements over time. DURABILITY IN DEMANDING ENVIRONMENTS: Traditional materials like wood and steel have been long-standing choices for marine construction. Time and again, they have proven to degrade over time due to moisture absorption, corrosion, and rotting. More durable options, such as composite lumber, offer a viable alternative engineered to resist these challenges effectively. “Not all composite materials are made the same. Because Lumberock has no organic fillers, we are able to guarantee your boards won’t warp or crack due to moisture absorption,” explains Sanders. “Lumberock is a mineral-based HDPE that will maintain its shape and integrity for the life of the board.” These materials boast impressive durability, withstanding the rigors of saltwater exposure, UV radiation, and heavy foot traffic without succumbing to rot, decay, or splintering. Their inherent resistance to water absorption and mold growth ensures long-term structural integrity, making them an ideal choice for docks and decking in marine environments. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY: In an era with an increased focus on sustainability, the environmental impact of construction materials is a critical consideration. Composite decking lines address this concern by incorporating recycled materials into their production. Moreover, their longevity and low maintenance requirements further enhance their eco-friendly profile, reducing the need for frequent replacements and treatments that contribute to environmental degradation. project. SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE: Beyond their durability and environmental benefits, composite options offer superior performance characteristics, making them the preferred choice for marine-grade applications. Their resistance to fading, staining, and scratching ensures long-lasting aesthetic appeal, maintaining vibrant colors and smooth surface textures even in harsh marine environments. Whether subjected to heavy loads, extreme weather, or corrosive saltwater, products such as Lumberock excel in performance, providing peace of mind and long-term durability for marine infrastructure projects. AESTHETIC VERSATILITY: In addition to their functional benefits, composite decking solutions such as Lumberock offer a robust color selection to enhance the aesthetic of your outdoor living space. These allow for creative customization to suit each project's unique preferences and requirements, providing endless possibilities for creating inviting and visually stunning waterfront spaces. Moreover, their consistent coloration and uniformity ensure a cohesive and polished look, elevating the overall aesthetic of docks, boardwalks, and waterfront amenities. “The best part of using a deck board from Lumberock is that your outdoor project is going to look the same for the life of the product,” says Sanders. “No more staining, painting, or repairing. Our customers are most excited to see their dock or deck looking the same 10 or 20 years down the road as the day it was installed.” Composite lumber options such as Lumberock marine grade decking offer a compelling choice for enhancing marine infrastructure, providing unparalleled durability, environmental sustainability, superior performance, and aesthetic versatility. “By leveraging these materials for docks and decking in marine environments, developers, contractors, and communities can achieve lasting resilience and visual appeal while minimizing their environmental footprint,” adds Sanders. “Choosing a premium product such as Lumberock will ensure the longevity and sustainability of your waterfront project for years to come.” Learn more at lumberock.com.

PRO TIPS: WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF VINYL FENCING? Several factors make vinyl fencing a preferred choice for today’s homeowners, and the professionals at Barrette Outdoor Living offer some key takeaways fence contractors and retailers can share to make the decision process easier for customers. MAINTENANCE Perhaps the biggest difference between vinyl fences and fences made from other materials is the amount of maintenance required. Vinyl fencing is low maintenance, requiring a light power washing or cleaning with a mild soap and water once or twice a year to remove any built-up dirt or debris. Besides being easy to clean, vinyl fencing never requires sanding, painting, staining or sealing, meaning homeowners will spend less time and money on maintenance. Vinyl fencing also tends to be more impact resistant than other materials and is designed to withstand the everyday activities — like children playing or accidental bumps — without easily being damaged. Infill boards that lock tightly together with no gaps — like ActiveYards’ vinyl privacy fencing with its patented GlideLock® system — feature superior strength and impact resistance. “Our exclusive GlideLock system creates the strongest, most security focused privacy fencing solution on the market,” says Scott Gamble, business director for ActiveYards. “And with pickets that snap together for easy installation and unparalleled impact resistance, it’s a great feature to offer homeowners with active families.”

ActiveYards offers several styles of vinyl fencing with its exclusive GlideLock system (shown here in Dogwood) that offers active families protection, privacy and peace of mind.

ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE In regions that experience a high amount of rainfall or moisture, vinyl fencing is an ideal choice since it’s made from durable PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Its composition allows vinyl fencing to stand up to the elements without rotting, warping, splintering or cracking. PVC is also impervious to damage from insects which can cause substantial destruction to fences made of other materials that may lead to significant repair and treatment costs. To help ensure vinyl fencing looks like new for years to come, industry-leading manufacturers like Barrette Outdoor Living mix fade resisting technologies into the PVC substrate of its vinyl fencing to ensure products will not weather and will remain looking like new for years to come. “Homeowners in areas that experience significant moisture or sun will greatly benefit from installing vinyl fencing,” says Zack Clark, vice president of Pro Fence, Barrette Outdoor Living. “The fact that PVC can tolerate the elements better than most other material types is a huge selling point, and without the need for constant staining and sealing, it’s a significant cost savings in the long term as well.” COST While the initial investment to purchase a vinyl fence may be slightly higher than other materials, over time, homeowners will find they will save not only in maintenance costs but also in replacement. Vinyl fencing can last for decades with minimal maintenance, and since warranties are designed to cover defects in manufactured products, homeowners will find more comprehensive and extensive warranties for vinyl fencing. “Fencing made from natural materials also tends to offer limited warranties — and in some instances no warranties,” says Clark. “We offer an industry-leading Transferable Limited Lifetime Warranty that covers our vinyl fencing products for up to 30 years, giving homeowners peace of mind for decades.” Continued on pg 36

STYLE When vinyl fencing first emerged on the market in the 1980s, styles were limited, and some homeowners felt a row of white “plastic” looking fence detracted from their natural surroundings. Today’s vinyl fencing has come a long way, offering more natural color options (such as tans and grays) and styles that are designed to better integrate with and complement the outdoors. Whether using mixed materials to create a distinctive modern look, offering a wider range of picket and semi-privacy options that allow light and air to flow more easily or offering wood grain color options that offer the look and texture of real wood without the maintenance, homeowners now have more vinyl fencing styles and colors than ever to choose from.

DURABILITY Durability is a huge advantage of vinyl fencing. No matter the amount of upkeep, panels and posts made from natural materials will naturally break down as fibers begin to deteriorate. This breakdown can cause bending and sagging in fence panels and gates to happen sooner and more frequently. Vinyl fencing is manufactured with technologies that provide structural durability within the rails, so fence lines stay straight and aligned over time — this also applies to vinyl gate framing.

Barrette Outdoor Living’s StaySquare® gate design features internal gate pockets that provide structural integrity.

Mixing materials can help create a distinct look. Barrette Outdoor Living paired its popular Decorative Screen Panels with horizontal privacy vinyl fencing for a unique take on traditional lattice top fencing.

Barrette Outdoor Living’s TimberGrain technology — found exclusively in its premium Bufftech vinyl fencing — pairs the most realistic wood texture with a rich blend of colors. “Our Bufftech product line is molded from real wood using a process that mimics the natural grains,” says Clark. “This takes vinyl fencing to the next level by producing an authentic finish that seamlessly blends in with a home’s natural surroundings.”

Barrette Outdoor Living’s TimberGrain technology, found in its Bufftech premium vinyl fencing, gives authentic wood texture and coloring to an extruded fence.

And unlike some other fencing materials, some brands and styles of vinyl fencing can follow variations in terrain — meaning if your customer has a sloped yard, you can adjust the fence panels to follow the natural curve (within a reasonable degree). This eliminates having a “stepped” installation and helps avoid large gaps underneath the fence line.

ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL The Surprising Ways Design and Color Change Vinyl Fence Installation

You might think putting up a vinyl fence is straightforward; just choose a color and start installing, right? The world of vinyl fencing is filled with twists and turns, especially when mixing colors and designs. Most everyone is familiar with the installation of the classic white vinyl privacy fence. The introduction of different colors, designs, and especially gates, requires careful attention to maintain the durability and integrity expected from a vinyl fence. “As colors darken, material considerations shift, requiring reinforcements,” explains Jessica Burton, president of Poly Vinyl Creations, an innovative leader in specialty outdoor products and headquartered in Florida. “For example, white vinyl may not require aluminum or steel rail reinforcement for certain sizes, but this becomes essential in darker shades to maintain the fence’s integrity. Darker colors often demand picket inserts in panels and reinforced gates. Especially in color privacy fences, attaching u-channel to posts and pickets is crucial for stability.” Burton always recommends checking with the manufacturer for recommendations on specific colors. Additional requirements may be needed to ensure customer satisfaction and fence durability. Aside from the color, the vinyl fence’s design variations can affect installation. “Standard vertical privacy fences prioritize alignment and uniformity, which demands precise post spacing,” Burton says. “Horizontal designs, however, present unique challenges, especially in privacy, picket, or semi-privacy styles. These may need reinforced posts, special notching, or metal inserts for stability, and extra care with color and design due to temperature-related expansion and contraction.” Picket fences require meticulous layout planning for even spacing and aesthetics. Mixed material fences, blending vinyl with metal or wood, need careful consideration of different expansion rates and attachment methods. “Custom designs call for tailored installation strategies, possibly involving unique brackets, fasteners, or panel sizes,” Burton says. “Each design choice dictates specific installation methods, emphasizing the need to adapting to individual style requirements for a lasting, attractive fence.” Omitting key steps, particularly with complex designs such as color, horizontal, or unique styles, can have significant consequences. “It’s a delicate balance between ensuring quality and adapting to the evolving demands of various designs,” she says. Contractors should consult with manufacturers for the latest installation guidelines and best practices, especially when dealing with unfamiliar designs or materials. The industry is continually evolving, and staying informed about new techniques and materials is key to ensuring optimal results. If a contractor receives unfamiliar parts or materials, it’s imperative they ask questions and understand their purpose, rather than making assumptions. “This mindset of continuous learning and open communication with manufacturers will help maintain high standards across the industry, benefitting both contractors and clients alike,” Burton says. “I’ve been involved with specialty outdoor products for over 25 years, and understand the nuances of vinyl fence installation from a manufacturer viewpoint,” she says. “I always try to bridge generational craftsmanship with modern techniques to ensure the integrity and beauty of vinyl fencing continue to thrive. My team and I are available to answer questions and discuss any aspect of a vinyl fence project; we want to contribute to the collective knowledge and advancement of vinyl fencing installation.” For more information, visit polyvinylc.com.

The Best Fencing Material May Not be Different than you Think

When it comes to building the most reliable fence possible for public or commercial property, it’s vital to use only the very best materials. According to Alan Potts, VP of structural channel with Tangent, HDPE, or high-density polyethylene, is an incredibly popular alternative to wood, vinyl, and steel for its overall strength and resilience, and offers many benefits. “Tangent’s HDPE is beautiful, but tough and extremely durable, being totally resistant to environmental conditions,” explains Potts. “This reduces a product’s rate of deterioration and ensures that it’s always strong enough to serve its intended function. HDPE is among the safest plastics used in fencing construction since it doesn’t release toxins into the environment or snap under stress. Due to its malleable nature, people use it in a multitude of different industries, and we can use it to create a wide variety of high-quality products, including fencing.” Potts provides an overview of several key reasons Tangent fencing is an extremely appealing choice: PROVEN PERFORMANCE: Tangent’s team has been extruding their recycled plastic lumber for demanding outdoor applications more than 30 years, so they are confident in statements about Tangent lumber’s toughness and durability. From fender systems protecting bridges from barge impacts, to dunnage and cribbing supporting power plant turbines, to the country’s most popular boardwalk’s decking, Tangent’s recycled plastic lumber for fencing has proven itself in the toughest of applications and environments. A GREAT TRADITIONAL LOOK: Tangent fencing makes for extremely attractive horse or farm fencing, allowing owners to enjoy the view and not stay busy scheduling maintenance. Tangent’s patented woodgrain finish to posts and rails provides an authentic wood-like look. Tangent fencing is commonly installed as post and rail horse fencing, in either split or ranch rail configurations. However, posts and rails are available in a wide variety of diameters and sections and can support wire or no climb fencing, or can be customized to an infinite variety of fencing styles. SOLID SECTIONS (NOT HOLLOW): Tangent wood is made from solid sections of recycled HDPE , and is an incredibly tough product, weighing only slightly more than wood. Tangent’s fencing material should not be confused with hollow PVC fencing. PRACTICALLY NO-MAINTENANCE: You never need to repaint or to replace rotting or warping boards. Tangent lumber will not absorb water, so is perfect for wet, poorly drained areas. It’s also engineered with the highest UV protection, so the color will not fade from sun exposure. EASE OF INSTALLATION: Tangent posts and rails can be installed as you would install wood fencing. No special tools are required. Tangent lumber posts can be driven in soil that would suit driving wooden posts with such equipment as a Montana post-drivers. Tangent lumber is cut with normal wood tools, such as chain and circular saws and is drilled with standard woodboring bits. It receives lag screws well. Gate fasteners can be lag bolted or through bolted. As with wood, carbide tipped tools provide greater durability. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY: Tangent wood is made from GreenCircle certified, recycled HDPE diverting material that would likely be landfilled if not repurposed. GreenCircle maintains third-party certification of Tangent’s recycled content and closed loop material usage which can be used to satisfy LEEDS requirements and ESG goals. COST: The cost of maintaining long runs of fencing can quickly add up over the years. While Tangent lumber might be more expensive initially than wood, contractors can help customers factor out all the costly maintenance of painting, staining and replacing, and the benefit of Tangent’s 50-year warranty on fencing.

Michael Reed,

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE AMERICAN FENCE ASSOCIATION

Developing industry leaders, strengthening systems, and fostering a positive culture at the American Fence Association – these are the professional goals of Michael Reed, executive director of AFA. He and his team recently coordinated another outstanding FENCETECH experience, the premier event in the fence industry. WITH FENCETECH ’24 IN OUR REAR-VIEW MIRROR, WHAT WERE SOME OF THE HIGH POINTS? There were so many high points. The opening party, Pickets and Picks, was an incredible opportunity to connect with industry colleagues. The education program had over 50 opportunities to learn something new, and the tradeshow was packed with innovative products and experts. All that being said, the most significant high point was the spirit of connectivity shared by exhibitors and attendees and how that resulted in a welcoming and inspiring experience. WHAT WERE SOME OPPORTUNITIES BETWEEN BOOTHS, WORKSHOPS, AND EVENTS, THAT STOOD OUT FOR YOU? Many exhibitors took advantage of the redesigned show floor to create an exhibit experience to showcase their products and services. In the education sessions, the industry’s leading thinkers shared technical competencies, business growth strategies, and leadership development. One special event especially captured my attention, the AFA Awards Ceremony. Past President Randy Ward with Radius Fence and Gates was recognized for his service and leadership, and Past President Randy Becnel with Triple B Construction and Fence was inducted into the AFA Hall of Fame. Recognizing the impact these two individuals have had on the organization and the industry was one of the things that made this FENCETECH so special. WHAT ARE SOME BEHIND-THE-SCENES HAPPENINGS TO PULL OFF AN EVENT THIS SIZE THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN? People would be surprised to learn how much volunteer engagement goes into FENCETECH. Industry leaders are passionate about AFA, which is demonstrated in the time they invest in event planning, preparing presentations, leading panel discussions, and connecting to new people through special interest groups. Volunteers form the backbone of FENCETECH, and they work with AFA’s expert meeting planning team to balance tradition and innovation to make FENCETECH the premier event in the industry. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE FENCETECH EXPERIENCE? I enjoy how every FENCETECH reflects the AFA experience. FENCETECH is where you belong if you are a professional in our industry. You can’t afford to miss the camaraderie, product innovations, and building a network that can improve your business. It’s where you grow in terms of developing a deeper understanding of yourself, your business, and your customers. It’s where you lead by being 60

MARCH 2024 | FENCE NEWS USA

involved with others working on an industry issue or concern you care deeply about, and ultimately, it’s about where you succeed by putting everything together, pushing yourself to improve each day, and creating a positive impact. WHAT WAS YOUR CAREER PATH PRIOR TO AFA? I’ve spent most of my 30-year career working with staff and volunteers who lead associations. For almost a decade, I worked on the credentialing and education programs for the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (now PHTA). I’ve started two companies: a software company that worked with associations and, for seven years, I had a consulting company that only worked with associations. That’s how I became acquainted with AFA; I was an outside consultant who helped with planning and governance for several years. SINCE TAKING THE HELM OF AFA IN JUNE 2022, WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND OBJECTIVES? AFA has a rich 62-year history of being a leading resource to the industry. My role as an executive director is to help our board of directors articulate a clear vision for the future and then implement winning strategies to make that vision a reality. The AFA board has prioritized several focus areas that drive our strategic plan. First, we will elevate the fence, gate, and perimeter security community through outstanding events and networking opportunities like FENCETECH. Next, we will continue to provide world-class educational and certification experiences that elevate the professionals in our industry. We will also increase awareness and adherence to industry standards and best practices. And, perhaps most importantly, we want to help create the environment where the industry grows. WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON FOR AFA AS AN ORGANIZATION? In 2024, AFA will create meaningful industry impact through several important initiatives, including advancing gate safety through standards development, community awareness, and education. We’ll monitor government relations issues important to our industry and share information to help our members. And we’ll use online learning to promote career pathways to help our members recruit, train, and retain our industry’s best talent. In each of these examples, we’ll find ways to partner with our members to help them reach their goals and be an indispensable resource to help them grow their businesses.

BE PART OF OUR NEXT ISSUE Back Row – Catherine Mills-Reynolds, Sara Surprenant, Michael Reed, Nick Rike, Alexa Churchwell Front Row – Causby Challacombe, Kelly Buchheit, Danielle Rhodes, Maggie Sutton

WHEN IT COMES TO THE CHAPTERS OF AFA, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KEYS TO FOCUS ON? The chapters are a critical component of the AFA experience. They provide members with grassroots education, networking, leadership development, and service-learning opportunities. In 2023, successful AFA chapter service projects across the country supported youth baseball, disabled veterans, and parks and schools. In three states, chapter leaders addressed licensing and code issues important to AFA members. In 2024, our chapters will produce the West Coast Fence Show and the Northeast Fence Show, both events connecting suppliers with contractors and delivering excellent education. The chapter experience allows members to connect with others and make a difference in their local communities. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE COMPANIES IN THE INDUSTRY TO CULTIVATE LEADERSHIP WITHIN THEIR COMPANY? It’s easy to get overwhelmed when company leaders think about creating a leadership development program. The best advice is to take a bold first step. Find a partner to help you identify your most pressing leadership needs, and then take one small step. That first step will lead to another and another. Think of your program as starting a movement, involving others, and letting them explore their passions and interests.

Next month, we’ll feature a special section on decks, railing and landscape fencing. If you would like to be part of this special issue, please send editorial to editor@fencenews.com by March 8 and schedule your ad by emailing katie@fencenews.com.

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION IN THE BUSINESS SECTOR AND WHY? Leading change is a passion for me. As an organization geek, I like to study and explore how companies work. I love how change initiatives include aspects of culture, strategy planning, teamwork, and leadership. I love helping leaders create and share a new vision, getting others involved in the change, and encouraging all of them to new heights while recognizing their efforts. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY AWAY FROM THE OFFICE? Today, much of my time away from the office is spent writing my doctoral dissertation on leadership and trust. I promised my 22-year-old self that I would someday hold a doctoral degree. Getting to this final phase has taken many years and several detours. Once it is done, I’m returning to hiking, scuba diving, and other outdoor activities. My family is my other joy. My wife and I are finding ways to connect with our 14-year-old daughter. We live in Maryland now, but we’re from Texas. My parents and siblings are still there, so we like to travel to Austin to spend time with family and friends. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? I’m motivated by the power of associations, especially associations like AFA. AFA is a community that builds leaders. It tackles complex problems and unites people to solve them. Spelling Bee by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP Executive vice president, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute 2022 Inductee, American Fence Association Hall of Fame

When I was graduating from the University of Maryland many years ago, I had no idea what I wanted to do for a living. I knew that I did NOT want to go into my father’s business, a small, carry out shop in Washington, D.C. I was thinking it would be great to get a small job with the government: safe, secure, decent pay, regular hours, etc. But I really wanted to get into the business world, so I started going on interviews with several different businesses in the D.C. area. During one of these interviews with a small manufacturing company, I was introduced to the company’s president; he founded the company over 40 years earlier. Upon being told I was a recent college graduate, he said to me, “Well, congratulations. I guess you must be pretty smart.” “I guess I’m ok,” I said, not knowing where this was going. He said, “Well then, how do you spell entrepreneur?” I said, “E-n-t” “Nope,” the president said, “try again. Again, I said, “E-n-t” He interrupted again, “Nope.” Finally, I asked, “How do you spell entrepreneur?” He said, “R-I-S-K.” Lesson learned. Some years later, I was executive vice president of the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC). At one of the board meetings, I looked around the table of 10 owners of small and medium-sized companies and thought to myself, “Whoa. All these contractors are well-off, they all have 25 or more employees working for them, and they fly all over the country for IEC at their own expense. Plus, every one of them makes way more money than I do. But there are only two of these contractors who even went to college. What do they have that I don’t?” Well, I finally realized, they had guts. They took

Start-Up Stories 64

MARCH 2024 | FENCE NEWS USA

a risk. They started or bought a business and made it work. Those electrical contractors were, and are, no different than many men and women who are in the fence industry. Even the largest companies in CLFMI and AFA were, for the most part, started years ago by people who were willing to take some risk to see their dreams of having their own company come true. Maybe they found a partner to start with, or maybe it was their family, or maybe they left an employer in the industry and started their own company, sometimes a competing company. They all took that risk. There are hundreds of new companies starting up every year in just this way in the fence industry. We all know people in our industry, or maybe friends or relatives, that like to talk about how they would run things, “if they were in charge.” They seem to be very capable, hard-working people who have some great ideas on how to run a contracting company, they like getting a paycheck every week or two, they like the benefits the company provides, they like doing the work. They are sure they could run a business better than the one they work for. They just don’t want to take the risk. I eventually acted on the spelling lesson I had received earlier in my career. I did what everyone said I shouldn’t do. I quit my “day job” and started my own company. At the time I had a new house, two very young children, a wife who had just stopped working to be home with the kids, and a company car that I was about to give up. But I did it. And it has been the greatest adventure I could ever have imagined. A few years after I started my business, I ran into a co-worker from my previous company in O’Hare airport. He said, “I really envy you, Mark. You get to go all over the world, you make your own schedule, you are your own boss, you make a lot of money.” I smiled at him and said, “Jim, you make a pretty good salary at XYZ company, don’t you?” Jim said, “Yeah, the pay is pretty good.” I said, “And at the end of the year, you are going to sit down with Duane (the supervisor at the company) and talk about how much more you are going to make next year than you did this year, right?” “Yeah, I guess that’s right, I will,” he answered. “So, you’ll start next year with this year’s salary

plus whatever raise or bonus you get?” I asked. He nodded, and then I asked, “What do you think my salary is every January 1st?” “I don’t know, what is it?” Jim asked. “ZERO,” I said. “When you have your own business, when you must keep selling to get new clients and working to keep the ones you have, you start at zero every year. Being an entrepreneur means you don’t get a raise or bonus until you’ve gone back and made enough this year to cover your own salary. Last year doesn’t count.” He looked at me and said, “I never looked at it that way. Guess I’m lucky to be where I am.” Listen, I’m not saying that taking on the risk of starting a new company or buying a company compares with the kind of risks people take to escape persecution or personal harm. But I think that being in a room full of fellow risk-takers is one of the reasons why people in the fence industry enjoy coming to FENCETECH and to the CLFMI meetings, and others in our industry. It’s kind of like a theme from the T.V. show Cheers: “Sometimes you like to go where everybody knows your name.” Well, maybe not everybody knows your name, but everybody does know the risks you took to start and grow your business, and what brings you to meet with your peers. You don’t have to say it, we all know that it’s just there, and it is part of what makes this business so enjoyable. It’s that adrenaline rush that you get by knowing that the risks you took have paid off. How do YOU spell entrepreneur? As executive vice president of Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute for 38+ years, Mark Levin is also an author and avid promoter of the fence industry. He believes in the successful leadership qualities he promotes, including listening, delegating, consensus building, communications and effective decisionmaking. The Benefits of Wire Mesh for Machine Guarding in Industrial Settings

Machine guarding is an essential safety measure that helps protect workers from potential hazards associated with machinery and equipment. “In industrial settings, choosing the right material for machine guarding to withstand heavy loads and impact, while still allowing visibility and being cost-effective can be challenging,” says Ray Niemeyer, vice president of sales with SpaceGuard Products, a growing family-owned business based in Seymour, Indiana. “There are many products promoted for this purpose, but we feel wire mesh is a superior choice. It’s a proven, effective machine guarding solution that checks off all of these requirements and more.”

Niemeyer provides an overview of the benefits of using wire mesh for machine guarding: Strength and Durability. Wire mesh is made from woven or welded wire, which makes it a strong and durable material that can withstand heavy loads and impact without breaking or bending. This makes it an ideal material for machine guarding, as it can protect workers from potential hazards and prevent damage to machinery. Visibility and Airflow. Wire mesh allows for visibility and airflow, making it an excellent solution for machine guarding. This feature will enable workers to see the machinery and equipment they are working with and provide proper ventilation. Workers need to have a clear view of the machinery they are working with to avoid accidents, and wire mesh allows this while also providing adequate ventilation. Cost-Effectiveness. Compared to metal, wood, or concrete options, wire mesh is lightweight, easy to install and maintain, and can be custommade to fit any space and application. Less material means a lower cost when incorporating mesh versus a solid material.

66

MARCH 2024 | FENCE NEWS USA

Customizable. Wire mesh partitions can be customized with different colors and designs to fit any facility’s or building’s aesthetic, making it an attractive option for machine guarding. Aesthetics may seem like an insignificant aspect of industrial machine safety; however, it plays an essential role in creating a safe and productive work environment in multiple ways, including: • Improved Visibility: A well-designed and aesthetically pleasing machine can improve visibility, making it easier for workers to identify potential hazards and operate the machinery safely. • Enhanced Comfort: A comfortable and visually pleasing work environment can help to reduce stress and improve the overall mood of the workers, which can lead to increased productivity and fewer accidents. • Better Organization: A well-organized and visually pleasing machine layout can help workers quickly and easily identify the different parts of the machinery, reducing the risk of accidents. • Branding and Marketing: An aesthetically pleasing, well-designed machinery area plays a role in branding and marketing, reflecting positively on the company to customers and visitors.

Safety Safety is, obviously, at the heart of all machine guarding designs. Wire mesh partitions offer several safety benefits, including their ability to absorb impact, reducing the risk of injury in a collision. Unlike solid partitions, wire mesh partitions are less likely to cause harm in a collision because they can bend or flex upon impact and dissipate the energy, reducing the force of impact. Niemeyer says as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), SpaceGuard Products specializes in producing several nationally recognized brands, including FordLogan Woven Wire Mesh Partitions, BeastWire Mesh Guarding and RageWire® Robotic Automation Guarding. “We have standard materials for these brands, providing flexible configurations, cost savings, and quick lead times for our customers’ projects.” Learn more at spaceguardproducts.com.

TIPS FOR EFFECTIVELY HANDLING CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS

In the dynamic world of business, customer complaints are inevitable. No one likes dealing with difficult customers, but complaints can come from even your best customers. How a company handles complaints can significantly impact its reputation, customer loyalty and even their bottom line. Experts say the key to dealing with customer complaints effectively is to view these interactions as an opportunity for growth and improvement by following proven guidelines: 1. LISTEN ACTIVELY. When a customer expresses dissatisfaction, the first and most crucial step is active listening. Train yourself and your team to listen attentively, allowing customers to voice their concerns fully. Understanding the issue from the customer's perspective is the foundation for effective resolution. 2. PUT YOUR EMOTIONS ASIDE. Whether it's a friendly lady trying to simply tell you how to do your job better or a disgruntled customer ready to erupt in rage, the best way you can handle any customer sharing a complaint is without your personal emotions getting in the way. Calmly listen and calmly reply without having an emotional reaction. 3. EMPATHY BUILDS BRIDGES: Empathy goes a long way in diffusing tension and building rapport. Express genuine concern and understanding. A simple acknowledgment of the customer's frustration can set the tone for a positive resolution process. 4. THANK THE CUSTOMER. Genuinely express your appreciation to the customer for alerting you to their problem and giving you the chance to resolve it. 5. SWIFT RESPONSE: Time is of the essence when it comes to customer complaints. A prompt response demonstrates commitment to customer satisfaction. Implement efficient systems to track and address complaints in real-time. Timely resolution not only satisfies the customer but also prevents the escalation of the issue. 6. APOLOGIZE WITH SINCERITY: A sincere apology can turn a negative experience into a positive one. Ensure that apologies are genuine, specific, and devoid of excuses. Take responsibility for any shortcomings and convey a commitment to resolving the issue. An apology is a powerful tool in rebuilding trust. 7. TRANSPARENCY BUILDS TRUST: Be transparent about the steps being taken to address the complaint. Customers appreciate honesty and openness. Keeping them informed about the resolution process fosters trust and reassures them that their concerns are being taken seriously. 8. LEARN AND IMPROVE: Every complaint is an opportunity to learn and improve. Encourage a culture of continuous improvement within your organization. Analyze patterns in customer feedback to identify systemic issues that may need attention. Use complaints as a source of valuable insights for refining products, services, and internal processes. 9. EXCEED EXPECTATIONS: Turn a negative experience into a positive one by going the extra mile. Consider offering a goodwill gesture, such as a discount, a complimentary service, or an extended warranty. By exceeding customer expectations in the resolution process, you not only retain their loyalty but also showcase a commitment to customer satisfaction. 10. MOVE ON: Don’t dwell on customer complaints once you’ve taken the right steps to resolve the issue. Most businesses are bound to get a complaint from time to time, and you can't please everyone. Ultimately, it's not the absence of complaints that defines excellent customer service, but rather how effectively and empathetically they are resolved.

GEAR UP FOR PEAK BUSY SEASON

As the fence industry braces for the approaching peak season, owners and managers get ready to shift into high gear. With demand (hopefully) on the rise, strategic preparation is key to ensuring a successful operation during the busiest time of year. Here’s a great checklist to make sure you and your business are ready to maximize productivity – and revenue—before warmer weather arrives: INVENTORY CHECK: Conduct a thorough inventory check to identify any shortages or items nearing depletion. Anticipate the demand for various types of materials and ensure you have sufficient stock to meet the needs of your clients promptly.

CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT: Clear communication is crucial during the busy season. Keep clients informed about project timelines, potential delays, and any changes in scheduling. Proactive communication fosters trust and helps manage client expectations.

STAFFING AND TRAINING: Evaluate your current staffing levels and consider hiring additional team members if necessary to meet the demands of the season. Once your team is in place, invest time in training sessions to ensure everyone’s skills meet your standards, including the areas of safety and customer services.

ADAPT TO MARKET TRENDS: Stay abreast of market trends and adapt your offerings accordingly. Whether it's incorporating eco-friendly materials, embracing new design trends, or integrating smart fencing solutions, aligning your business with current market preferences can give you a competitive edge during the peak season.

OPTIMIZING PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Efficient scheduling is the backbone of a busy, successful company, and is even more important as demand increases. Implement a streamlined project management system that allows for optimal allocation of resources, tracks project progress, and ensures deadlines are met.

SAFETY FIRST: A busy season leads to a faster work pace, making safety a top priority. Conduct safety training sessions, remind your team of best practices, and ensure that all safety equipment is in good condition.

EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND UPGRADES: Prior to the busy season, conduct a thorough inspection of all tools and machinery. Perform necessary maintenance and consider upgrading equipment if needed. This ensures your team can work at peak performance without delays.

Being well-prepared for the demands of peak season also builds a foundation for sustained growth and client satisfaction throughout the rest of the year.

MARKETING AND PROMOTION: Leverage the increased peak season interest/need by intensifying your marketing efforts. Implement targeted advertising campaigns, utilize social media platforms, and showcase your portfolio of completed projects. Highlight any special promotions or discounts to attract new clients and retain existing ones. FENCENEWS.COM | MARCH 2024

FAMILY-OWNED MILLS LED TO A FENCE EMPIRE The Lau family are leaders in the wood, fence, and railing industries. Jason Lau’s family has operated a sawmill in China for three generations, expanding over time to include several companies in the wood business. Today, Fence Empire encompasses eight companies: ProRail, FeShield, FeDek, Ameritimber, AmeriRail, JapCedar, Americraft and AmeriGuard. Jason’s grandfather, Zhongshan Lau, started the small family-owned workshop, Lau’s Sawmill, in 1952, to make semi-finished boards. “After creating basic furniture in our sawmill for many years, my family’s factory expanded,” explains Jason. “In 1980, they obtained a large amount of land to plant trees to secure raw materials. The name of the sawmill changed to Senzi Wood. My father, Quanlai, and my brother, Xiangyang, operated the company after my grandfather passed away. We began making fence pickets, rail, posts, dimensional lumber and tongue and groove in 1996 for US companies through China state-owned import and export companies. In 2009, we applied for export permit and began our international business.” Thanks to the family’s mills in China, they have access to valuable Japanese cedar, allowing them to manufacture cedar fence pickets to US markets. “Soon, we began receiving orders in large quantities for our Japanese cedar pickets, propelling us to a leadership position in the fence industry,” he explains. To overcome the time difference and ensure they could serve customers to a high standard, Jason moved to California, and they established Fence Empire in 2017. It is the umbrella company for the family’s wood business and services distributors and building supply stores. “Our ownership of these companies showcases our commitment to providing a comprehensive range of fencing solutions, catering to the diverse needs and preferences of our customers,” Jason says. “We have always been committed to developing extraordinary relationships with our customers, propelling our expansion. We provide what our customers need. Thanks to our sawmills and manufacturing facilities, we can meet a variety of needs within the fence and railing industries and ensure quality. Our products are from our mills directly to market.” Product quality is the lifeline of the company. They strictly ensure their product fits the standards and drawings agreed upon so that the customer receives exactly what they need for their project. “We offer a variety of Japanese cedar grades, each one offering unique characteristics and uses,” Lau says. “Our family is proud of our reputation for quality, and we work tirelessly to ensure each customer’s order is filled accurately and in a timely manner. Quality control is vital to our business; it’s one of the key factors in our success.” “I am proud of our family-owned company and to carry on our entrepreneurial spirit,” Jason says. “We’re honored to serve the American lumber market.” For more information, visit fenceempire.com.

Standard Paints, Inc. Reintroduces EZ Kleen Multi-Purpose Cleaner Standard Paints, Inc., a leader in industrial coatings and manufacturer of Wood Defender, announces the reintroduction of an innovative product, EZ Kleen MultiPurpose Cleaner™. It is specifically formulated to address and clean stain overspray on non-porous surfaces. “EZ Kleen is designed as the perfect companion to our flagship oil-based exterior wood stain, Wood Defender,” explains Laurel McEuen, director of marketing with Standard Paints, Inc. “This marks a significant expansion in our product line.” EZ Kleen has exceeded its initial purpose of removing stain overspray, and it also effectively removes dirt, grime, and grease from a variety of surfaces. Ideal for use on windows, gutters, vehicles, and beyond, EZ Kleen is a versatile solution for both commercial and residential applications. In response to customer feedback, EZ Kleen is now available in two sizes: a 5-gallon option for large-scale commercial projects and a 1-gallon size suitable for smaller tasks and domestic use. “It contains a new and

improved formulation that is APEO-free, underscoring our commitment to environmental responsibility and user safety without compromising on effectiveness,” says Alix Glodich, vice president of research and development. The recommended dilution is a ratio of one-part EZ Kleen to two parts water, though it can be used at full strength for more demanding challenges. Its formulation ensures it is safe for all surfaces, addressing a common concern with other degreasers that can damage glass or strip paint. “As with all cleaners, we recommend a test patch first, particularly on painted surfaces, to guarantee compatibility,” McEuen says. “Just as we set the standard in protective wood care with our Wood Defender premium oil-based exterior wood stain, EZ Kleen is poised to do the same for cleaning and maintenance.” The new range of EZ Kleen sizes and formulation are available now.
