Encon Electronics Opens New Sacramento office

Leading access control and gate operator supplier Encon Electronics has announced the opening of its new office in Sacramento, California.

With corporate headquarters in Hayward, California, Encon has been distributing access control and gate operator products to dealers nationwide since 1984. A second branch office opened in the Sacramento Valley region in 2017, but they outgrew this space. The new Sacramento office offers a more convenient, easyto-access location, and provides three times the warehouse capacity of Encon’s previous Sacramento office with over 5000 square feet of warehouse space. Encon prides itself on having the products their dealers need in stock every day. The upgraded office and increased warehouse space allows them to stock an even larger and more diverse inventory.

“We opened the Sacramento office to accommodate our dealers in the Sacramento Valley area,” says President Jeff Harris. “It delivers the same amazing services our Hayward office provides to customers in the Bay Area and nationwide. We are extremely excited about the larger Sacramento space and the potential it offers our customers.”

Dana Naylor will continue to manage the Sacramento branch at the new location. Mark Sousa will oversee purchasing, and Vince Sandoval will oversee the warehouse. Josh Wahl and Lawrence Bourke will continue to offer inside and outside sales and technical support.

With 25 employees, Encon is a relatively small wholesale supplier serving thousands of gate operator and access control dealers throughout the United States. For nearly 40 years, they have provided dealers quality products, superior customer service, and free technical support.

“We are proud of the volume and variety of products that we can offer our dealers,” says Harris. “Over the years, we’ve fostered strong relationships with our manufacturer network. As a result, we can provide the products our customers need when they need it and with same day shipping on most of those products. Encon will continue to evolve as we evaluate the needs of our customer base. We add manufacturers and new products to our stock inventory on an ongoing basis, and we will consider future expansion to new branch locations based on demand.”

With 25 employees, Encon is a relatively small wholesale supplier serving thousands of gate operator and access control dealers throughout the United States. For nearly 40 years, they have provided dealers quality products, superior customer service, and free technical support.

The Sacramento office number will remain the same, (916) 526-1227, and the sales team can be reached via their direct cell numbers. Learn more at www.enconelectronics.com.

Push Comes to Shove for Louisiana Gate Installers

For the Gulf South Chapter of the American Fence Association (AFA), 2023 will put a spotlight on education for the gate installing industry. Sources within the Southern chapter cite an internal announcement late last year by the chapter president, Mike Gulledge, who indicated that the Louisiana Fire Marshal’s office will put a focus on education when it comes to the installation and inspection of commercial and residential gate operators.

Beginning in 2023, the Louisiana Fire Marshal’s office now formally requires more training for their personnel on the UL325 life safety standard and the ASTM F2200 automation standard to ensure they are properly inspecting gate systems for noncompliance.

According to Susan Worley, branch manager of SAS Baton Rouge, the Louisiana Fire Marshal’s office will also be attempting to involve engineers to prevent operator noncompliance issues at the outset of new projects. In a recently released My Fence Life podcast episode, Worley discusses the newly changed requirements with podcast host Dan Blanc of Fence King.

Blanc emphasizes the importance of this training for project engineers as it relieves a burden for licensed installers, who, in the past, have had to clean up the mistakes of not only project engineers but unqualified installers whose licensing have not been verified.

This newfound formal enforcement by the Louisiana Fire Marshal’s office of licensing for commercial and residential installers should also return work to those who have been properly trained to install such operators all along. However, this will lead to an influx of unlicensed installers who are now in need of education – widening the gap for leading providers of dealer and installer education such as Southwest Automated Security to step up when it comes to organizing routine training.

Visit www.southwestautomated.com/events to find upcoming training and education programs from licensed education providers like Southwest Automated Security at one of 19 locations.

Premier Attachments Introduces Attachment

Premier Attachments, a manufacturer of construction and agriculture equipment attachments and parts based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has developed and patented a series of attachments with mounting brackets that allow for the two most common skid steer attachments styles, mini-skid and universal skid steer, to be utilized on a single attachment.

“Our new Duo-Tach mounting bracket for full sized skit steers, utilizing the universal skid steer mounting style and mini-skid steers, using the common industry standard mini-skid mounting style, share the same basic structure built into one Duo-Tach attachment,” explains Greg Seifert, owner and president of Premier Attachments. “This allows the owner to utilize one attachment for both mini-skid steers and full-sized skid steers on any given job site at any time.”

Siefert says the best part of this new product is the reduction in the size of the attachment fleet. “Our Duo-Tach mounting bracket can be used across all platforms of host machines. There is no adapter, no conversion plate and not a single tool is required to switch from one style of mount to the other,” explains Siefert. “Just un-hook from your mini-skid steer and hook right up to your full-size skid steer and go to work. Fewer pieces of equipment to purchase, plus more efficiency on a job site equals greater profitability. Don’t just attach it, Duo-Tach it!”

Premier Attachments has incorporated the Duo-Tach mount to their line of attachments, including their Earth Auger, Trencher, Pallet Fork and the new Utility Hitch attachment. “The four DuoTach attachments are built in our Fort Wayne, Indiana factory with the same quality and craftsmanship that goes into everything we build. We stand behind every one of our products with our best0in-class warranty and customer service,” says Seifert.

The Duo-Tach is compatible with all major brands of skid steers including Bobcat, John Deere, New Holland and others. As well as all major brands of mini-skid steers including Ditch Witch, Vermeer, Toro and others.

Perimeter Solutions Group Announces Acquisition of Sterling Enterprises

Perimeter Solution Group announces the recent acquisition of commercial fencing provider Sterling Enterprises.

Located in Lake Helen, Florida, Sterling Enterprises has a track record of over 20 years in managing commercial, industrial, and transportation fencing projects throughout Florida and Southern Georgia. Ryan Wilkins, founder of Sterling, will continue with Perimeter Solutions Group in his leadership role, and all employees of the company have been retained.

Perimeter Solutions Group was established by Chris Kliefoth, former CEO of Nationwide Industries, and Sam Rosati, founder of Pursuant Capital, as a platform to provide integrated fence, gate, access automation, and temporary barrier services to the non-residential industry end market. Its initial acquisition of West Florida Fence in September of 2021 established the platform as a top industry provider, and West Florida Fence’s leader, Wes Tolbert, serves as Perimeter Solutions Group’s president.

Since the initial acquisition, Perimeter Solutions Group has rapidly expanded its reach to serve the entire 14-state Southern US region for non-residential sectors including commercial, industrial, military, governmental, alternate energy, energy infrastructure, highway, and other applications.

“I am happy to combine my business with Perimeter Solutions Group

and have access to the expertise, supply chain opportunities, and financial resources the team brings,” says Ryan Wilkins of Sterling Enterprises.

“It’s a great pleasure to have Ryan and his team join Perimeter Solutions Group,” says Tolbert. “Our shared culture of commitment to excellence, customer satisfaction, and employee retention will help our platform grow even faster and serve our customers even better.”

“Both of these acquisitions accelerate our mission to be the permier provider of integrated perimeter solutions including fencing and barriers, unlimited gate configurations, automated access controls, and 24/7 services supporting our customers with a single security solution,” says Chris Kliefoth, co-founder of Perimeter Solutions Group.

Sam Rosati, co-founder of Perimeter Solutions Group, adds, “With a strong equity base and excellent lending relationships, Perimeter Solutions Group is in a unique position to execute its strategy of combining acquisition and organic growth in this relatively fractured industry where ownership is aging. We offer both exit and growth capital along with operational support.”

CASE STUDY: EC Fence & Iron Works Create Popsicle Fence for School Playground

THE CHALLENGE

When McGraw Elementary School in Camden, New Jersey, expanded their playground areas, the architect and school district had a specific vision for the fence. The general contractor contacted EC Fence & Iron Works Inc. in Norristown, Pennsylvania, with the idea for what they called a multicolor “popsicle fence” that would match the building and surface colors. The goal was to create a colorful divider without too much obstruction that would enhance the fun aesthetic of the new playground space. Hidden fasteners were requested on this fence, for both safety and a more finished appearance. In addition, the contractor requested an ornamental iron fence outside the popsicle fence for added safety and security.

BACKGROUND

Founded by Gwen Sims 24 years ago, EC Fence & Iron Works has grown into one of the leading fence companies in the Pennsylvania tri-state area, with 35 employees. The company specializes in industrial and commercial fencing and iron works and has the capability to undertake all types of fence and metal projects.

SOLUTION

“We’d never been asked to build a popsicle fence, but we are always up for a challenge,” says Erik Sims, senior vice president at EC Fence & Ironworks. EC Fence’s inhouse detailing team did a 3D scan of the site and prepared the submittal drawings along with the fabrication and install drawings.

Radius and pitched welded framework are always a challenge but Sims says his company has gotten pretty good at it over the years. For longevity, aluminum was chosen. The color for the project was matched using the RAL color matching system. The RAL colors chosen were Jay Blue, Major Blue, Sky Fall, and Minor Blue.

The framework was 2-inch aluminum square tube radiused and fully welded to follow the circumference of their playground area and design. The individual “popsicle sticks,” or fence pickets, were water jet cut and prepared for fabrication of the hidden brackets. Once fabricated and edges smoothed, they were off to Gill Powder Coating in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, for their final finishing stage before assembly. The installation was very simple using internal sleeves to connect the rails together.

Once the popsicle fence was complete, an Iron World ornamental iron fence was installed outside of it to provide security for the entire play area.

“It was a great project and you can see by the pictures, it came out beautiful,” added Sims.

SPECIAL SECTION

The combination of function and aesthetics are moving many homeowners and businesses to choose vinyl fencing. The array of styles, colors, and sizes give many options and the ease of maintenance check many boxes for consumers. Check out this section to get the latest trends, keys to maximize sales, and how you can get top-of-the-line products by choosing American made.

A Quick Guide to Installing Vinyl Fences on Walls, Beams or Slabs

Vinyl fence is fast becoming one of the most popular fence systems in the world. It looks great, there are many different design options, and it’s virtually maintenance-free. However, like most fence systems, it does offer some installation challenges.

One of those challenges is a vinyl fence project which includes concrete walls, beams or slabs. The professionals at Rite-Way Fencing, one of Canada’s largest fencing companies, offers an overview of what you need to know about this type of vinyl fence installation.

Check the Surface

It is possible to install vinyl fence on concrete beams, walls or slabs, but it’s very important to ensure that the surface and substrate you’re going to install your fence on can handle the installation process and support your fence. Some types of walls – like cinderblock – aren’t suitable for fence installation. Thin concrete slabs or concrete that is cracked or damaged might also not be able to support the new fence.

Remember that vinyl fence – especially privacy fence – does increase the wind load on the surface significantly. So, any underlying weaknesses could become much worse.

Custom Steel Support Posts

Once you’re sure the surface can handle the fence you plan to install, the next thing you need to do is design and manufacture your steel support posts.

One of the more common methods of installing a vinyl fence is to use a hidden steel support post with collars, and this works well for vinyl fence that will be installed on a concrete surface.

Instead of pounding the steel support posts into the dirt, they will need to be bolted in place. This means you’ll need to swap ordinary fence posts for posts that have pre-welded base plates. Using wedge anchors or even chemical anchors will give you more than enough support to keep your fence sturdy and stable.

Vinyl Design Options for Bolted Systems

The good news is that because most vinyl fence systems have hollow posts that can be installed using a steel support post, most vinyl fence options are compatible with this kind of base-plated installation.

Even if you are installing some of your vinyl fence on a beam, slab or wall and the rest on ordinary dirt, it’s possible to design a fence that will transition seamlessly from one installation method to another.

— EMERGING TRENDS IN VINYL FENCING —

While function is still the most important factor when homeowners are deciding on a new fence, many are now also looking at the larger aesthetic when it comes to upgrading their outdoor areas. Traditional white solid privacy vinyl fencing continues to be the top seller in all markets, but the variety of alternative styles, colors and sizes available in vinyl today offer homeowners more choices than ever — creating new trends and new demand.

“People want beauty when it comes to fencing options and are looking more at how a fence integrates with the overall design of their yard and the environment they live in,” says Zack Clark, vice president of Pro Fence at Barrette Outdoor Living. “Today’s wide-ranging styles and options are proof that sometimes a fence is more than just a way to keep the dog safe or block out a nosy neighbor.”

Embracing Color and Wood Grains

The increase in demand for colored vinyl fencing — either in earth-tone solids or in variegated wood grains — is evident in all areas of the country as more homeowners seek out fencing options that blend in rather than stand out. For example, in wooded or mountainous areas like the Pacific Northwest — which has traditionally been a strong market for wood privacy fence — wholesalers have noticed a growing interest in colored and wood grain vinyl.

“People like the fact that they can get a product that matches their outdoor living environment and that better tolerates the heavy rainfall and moisture we experience in this part of the

For homeowners who want a fence to blend in more to their natural surroundings, vinyl wood grain options have come a long way — providing the look of real wood with the low

country,” says Dwayne Hopper, senior manager at Economy Fence Center in Mukilteo, Washington. “With vinyl fencing, there is no worry about rot or the need for staining and sealing — that’s a huge benefit over wood.”

Creating two-tone solid privacy fencing is another way some installers are using color to offer homeowners a classic style with a decorative twist. “We’ve been installing a lot of solid privacy vinyl fencing using white rails and posts with tan infill pickets,” says Adam Sanford, general manager at Florida State Fence in Tampa, Florida. “Besides a great look, we can easily create an upscale design with vinyl product that we always have in stock.”

New Styles Offer Increased Ventilation

For customers in warmer climates or in areas prone to strong winds, vinyl louvered and shadowbox fencing are new to the market and are expected to steadily gain popularity in 2023.

Barrette Outdoor Living’s unique Louvered Privacy Vinyl Fencing offers seclusion while allowing increased airflow to circulate between the infill boards. This modern style features slanted horizontal boards, angled enough to allow light to filter through that can produce a shadow effect through the panel’s backside, making it a “neighbor-friendly” product as well.

Likewise, vinyl shadowbox fencing offers a low maintenance, long-lasting alternative to a very popular traditional wood product. With increased ventilation and pool code compliant rail options, this fence style is a good choice for yards with pools or near water.

A Modern Take on Classic Privacy

The rise of mixed material fencing — the combination of black aluminum framing with vinyl infill boards — is a striking design that provides a modern take on classic solid privacy vinyl fencing.

“Mixed material fencing reflects a relatively new exterior design trend that uses black accents in places that traditionally were white — like window frames and around entryway doors,” says Patrick Bertke, industrial designer at Barrette Outdoor Living. “A vinyl fence with a black frame can complement that modern look, bringing a cohesive aesthetic out into the yard as well.”

Some products, such as Barrette Outdoor Living’s Mixed Material Fencing offer the ability to install infill boards vertically or horizontally and can be installed in-ground or surface-mounted for greater flexibility. Fencing panels can also be arranged as individual or grouped panels that serve as a divider or privacy treatment.

For homeowners in warmer climates or in areas prone to strong winds, new styles of vinyl privacy fencing that provides ventilation are gaining popularity.

With mixed material fencing that accommodates a variety of colors of vinyl infill boards, privacy fencing is taken to a more modern level and is on-trend with other exterior design accents being seen.

Myths About Vinyl Fences

Vinyl fences typically require very little maintenance. You never need to paint or stain them because the material doesn’t scratch easily or absorb dirt. You can just hose off the surface if it gets dirty. You also don’t have to worry about splinters as you do with a wood fence if you have kids or pets.

However, there remain myths and misconceptions about vinyl fences, including these:

MYTH: VINYL FENCES AREN’T AS STRONG AS OTHER FENCES

Vinyl fences are safe and extremely durable. There’s no reason why it won’t last as long as a wooden fence. Vinyl fences are also very sturdy and can withstand strong winds and other weather elements. And if you want to add a little personality to your fence, many types of vinyl fences come in very bright colors.

MYTH: VINYL FENCES NEED REGULAR MAINTENANCE

Vinyl fences don’t need much maintenance, but you do need to make sure there are no cracks or holes in the fence. If there are any, you need to fix them right away.

When you do need to patch a vinyl fence, you’ll find that the material is easy to cut and repair. Vinyl fences are also very lightweight, making them easy to move around and install.

MYTH: VINYL FENCES NEED SPECIAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT TO REPAIR THEM

Many vinyl fences are designed to be easily repaired. Few of them require special tools or pieces that can only be purchased at specialty stores. You can repair most vinyl fences with the tools you already have in your house.

MYTH: VINYL FENCES CAN’T HANDLE COLD WEATHER WELL

Vinyl fences are sturdy enough to withstand cold weather conditions. They’re also moisture-resistant, so they’re great for snowy climates. If you want to make your fence more sturdy, consider coating it with a special sealant or using a primer before staining it.

MYTH: VINYL FENCES WON’T LAST AS LONG AS WOOD FENCES

Vinyl fences can last a very long time, depending on your climate and the temperature levels in your area. Moreover, the material is fairly flexible, so it has a lot of give in case of an accident and won’t easily break. Vinyl fences are as sturdy as wooden fences, and you also have the option of selecting one treated with UV protectants to make it even more durable.

MYTH: VINYL FENCES ARE BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Vinyl fences are great for the environment. They’re made from recycled materials and can be cleaned with a hose. They never need to be painted or stained, and they don’t need to be replaced often either. It is a great choice for those who care about wildlife and the environment.

MYTH: VINYL FENCES ARE EXPENSIVE

Vinyl fences can be very affordable. Prices vary depending on the type of fence you choose, but they generally won’t cost more than a couple of hundred dollars. This can include the labor for installation too. If you have an already existing fence, you may consider simply adding a vinyl fence.

Vinyl fences are a great option to add a little privacy to your home. They’re very secure and great for kids and pets.

PVC Fencing and Composite Fence Facts:
Debunking

Do It Once and Do It Right

In recent years, vinyl fence manufacturers, wholesalers and installers all agree more homeowners are embracing a “do it once and do it right” mentality as they look at outdoor products that will not only last during the time they reside in their house, but that will also help with resale value when the time comes to move on.

“From our perspective, people are coming to realize that vinyl fencing isn’t as expensive as what they had thought — the price difference between PVC and wood has really narrowed and customers are considering vinyl to be a worthwhile and long-term investment,” says Tom Ritter, executive director of corporate sales at Long Fence in Odenton, Maryland. “They want quality products that are stylish, easy to maintain and that won’t have to be replaced in a few years — vinyl fencing provides that.”

FENCENEWS.COM | MARCH 2023 39
continued from page 36

The inflation of everyday expenses and a looming recession can be discouraging to homeowners when it comes to home improvement projects. Rising interest rates and a decrease in housing starts could impact fence installers and dealers in 2023.

But fewer jobs does not have to mean less revenue. A key is to adapt sales strategy and increase profit margins on each job.

Offering premium products that command a higher price can set a company apart from the competition and make jobs more profitable. Vinyl is a fast-growing segment of fencing, estimated to expand more than any other material, due to its light weight, durability, and low maintenance and repair needs.

By providing products that are unique, a company can meet customer demand for vinyl without competing with every other dealer or bigbox store.

For example, instead of the standard smooth, white vinyl, showcase fencing with desirable colors and textures. Another option is to promote the highest quality vinyl for the long-term reliability and cost-effectiveness that justify a higher upfront cost.

CertainTeed’s Bufftech® vinyl fence offers both quality and cost-effectiveness with proprietary CertaGrain® for a realistic woodgrain texture. Notably, CertaGrain products can only be purchased from a CertainTeed dealer, so cross shopping is not an issue.

“There’s nothing else like CertaGrain on the market,” says CertainTeed Product Manager Nicole Juchniewicz. “We love that we can give our dealers and installers a competitive advantage by offering customers something they can’t cross shop. When people see the authentic woodgrain finish and realize they can have classic beauty with little to no maintenance, they don’t need to keep looking.”

Customers prefer to shop for fencing in person

so they can see and touch the materials they are investing in. This is where CertaGrain and other unique, premium fencing products give dealers and installers an edge: CertaGrain's texture is demonstrably different than anything else on the market. Customers can immediately see the difference.

In fact, Vista Fence Company, a CertainTeed dealer in Vista, California, saw this exact scenario play out. Candy, a homeowner, came in to replace her rotted wood fence, but didn’t want vinyl because she didn’t like the shiny white surface. She researched textured vinyl fencing online and discovered Bufftech, but needed to see it for herself.

When Candy saw the CertaGrain texture on display at Vista, she was sold—even though they did not currently have any in stock. She was not only willing to pay more for the premium product, but also willing to wait for a new shipment. In the end, Candy was thrilled, saying, “The fence is so pretty! When I’m outside now I look at my fence every day instead of the view.”

“With products that are demonstrably unique, you can inspire customers with the vision of a premium fence that will delight for years to come –and you can put the days of price-matching entrylevel products behind,” explains Juchniewicz.

CertaGrain offers the beauty of stained wood without the headaches. Not only can customers have the widest range of fade-resistant color options and a texture unmatched by any other product, but they can also have a fence that never needs painting or staining and won’t peel, splinter, or rot.

CertainTeed vinyl fencing offers exceptional quality, innovation, and durability, an industryleading spectrum of fade-resistant colors, and a lifetime limited warranty.

Fencing Offers

Unsurpassed Protection of Critical Assets

When security is the priority for a fence installation, different options offer different advantages, but it can be difficult to find one choice that combines multiple advantages and access deterrents, particularly for sites that require the ultimate level of protection. But AIMS Composites, a leading supplier of structural fiberglass products, has developed a security fence system that provides both exceptional security and an attractive design. It is also electrically non-conductive (ENC) with several other specialized features that make it the ideal choice for protecting critical assets such as utility and telecommunication transmission sites or airport perimeters.

The AIMS ENC Security Fence System is a composite fence made from molded FRP (fiberglass-reinforced plastic) panels. It is light-weight, fireretardant, non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant and has a very high dielectric strength (non-conductive). “We’ve combined non-conductivity and security into an easy-to-install solution for the energy, air, marine, transportation, and other industries,”says Kinton Lawler, CEO of AIMS Composites.

Because the fence does not conduct electricity, Lawler says it is a very safe alternative to traditional steel fences for use around power plants, transformers, and similar installations. ENC Security Fencing can be used in place of metal fencing anywhere and is especially advantageous in areas with corrosion or conductivity concerns “This fence is also RF transparent, which means it will not interfere with the transmission of electronic signals like those found at airports or telecommunication locations. Heat can be a consideration at these types of sites as well. Our fence panels have low thermal conductivity, providing the assurance that they are always cool to the touch, and more importantly, are also fire resistant”

The lightweight system can be installed quickly, with minimal maintenance required, which results in lower labor and tool costs. Posts for the system are made from structural FRP shapes while the hinges and latches for gates are made from 316 stainless steel or galvanized steel. The fastener hardware can be either FRP, plastic, 316 stainless steel, or typical galvanized steel bolts. The FRP panels can also be used as isolation panels for metallic fences The standard fence panel design is 6 x 8 feet and can withstand wind speeds of up to 140 mph or higher based on ASCE 7-10. The versatile design has the ability to ft any fencing application. Personnel, single or double door gates can be easily installed with the system.

ENC Security Fence is anti-climb, anti-torch and anti-cut Threaded fasteners bolt through the panels and tighten securely using AIMS panel plugs. All nuts are located behind the fence, making criminal access nearly impossible When criminals typically attempt to gain access through a security fence, they use cutters and/or cutting torches. Lawler says these tools are useless against the AIMS ENC Security Fence System “Additionally, if a criminal manages to

cut a hole in a traditional security fence, they can remove items larger than the hole simply by expanding the metal mesh. This type of criminal access is impossible with our fencing system.”

Multiple colors, sizes, shapes are available for the FRP panels, including:

• non-conductive diamond mesh

• non-conductive square mesh

• louvered design with concertina razor wire

• non-conductive sturdy mudmat design

• non-conductive square plate rugged surface

Contractors whose home and business customers desire a fencing system that protects their property with complete privacy while offering stunning curb appeal will find their objectives met with Digger Specialties, Inc. AmericanMade Matters

When it comes to fencing and railing for your home, there are a variety of options to choose from. However, many homeowners and fence and railing professionals are turning to American-made vinyl as the best choice for their needs. Here are a few reasons why American-made vinyl fence and railing is the a great option on the market.

Chris DeLuso, Chief Revenue Officer of Eastern Wholesale Fence, provides insight into why American-made vinyl fence and railing brands like Illusions Vinyl Fence and Railing and EverStrong Profiles, which are manufactured on Long Island, New York, and Salisbury, North Carolina, are a preferred choice of contractors for their customers.

ASSURANCE OF QUALITY: One of the primary benefits of choosing American-made vinyl fence and railing is the assurance of quality. American vinyl manufacturing standards are some of the highest in the world, ensuring that products made in the U.S. meet strict quality control measures. The materials used in the production are equally as important as the production itself. When vinyl fence or railing is made in America, you can be confident that it will meet your expectations for quality and durability.

STRICT QUALITY CONTROL MEASURES: American manufacturers are subject to strict quality control measures, ensuring that products meet the highest production standards. All Illusion and EverStrong brand products, for example, meet or exceed ASTM F964 specifications.

TRUSTED BRAND NAMES WITH STRONG WARRANTIES: Many American-made vinyl fence and railing products are produced by well-known and trusted brand names that offer warranties on their products’ longevity. This gives contractors and property owners added peace of mind.

SUPPORTING THE LOCAL ECONOMY: When you choose American-made products, this results in a positive impact to the economy. You are supporting local businesses and investing in the success of your community.

CREATING JOBS: Choosing American-made vinyl fence and railing creates and sustains jobs, both where the products are manufactured as well as with local businesses who work on the project. More and more municipalities and government agencies are specifying domestically produced and sourced Americanmade materials for installation.

PVC Fencing and Composite

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY: American manufacturers are also subject to strict environmental regulations which helps to minimize the impact of production on the environment. Additionally, 100% Pure Virgin Vinyl American-made vinyl fence and railing products like the Illusions line are more likely to be recyclable at the end of their lifespan, making them a more environmentally friendly choice.

CUSTOMIZATION AND SPECIFICATIONS: Vinyl fence and railing products made in the U.S. offer greater customization and availability options. With a wide range of styles, designs, and colors to choose from, contractors can easily find a product that meets their project’s specific needs and preferences.

QUICK AVAILABILITY: American-made products are typically available more quickly, as they do not have to be shipped from overseas, meaning you can receive your order faster and start your project sooner. For example, most styles of Illusions Vinyl Fence products are in stock and ship immediately when the order is received.

“There are many benefits of buying American. The list above is just a closer look at some of them,” says DeLuso. “From quality assurance to environmental responsibility, American-made products provide contractors and property owners with peace of mind and a range of options to meet their specific needs and preferences. Whatever your project, American-made vinyl fence and railing is the best choice for a durable, high-quality, and eco-friendly product.”

How do you know you’re getting an American-made product? According to DeLuso, “Not all vinyl fence brands are created equal. You have to take the time to ask some important questions of your fence installation company or distributor.” He suggests asking:

• Are they using domestically sourced American-made products?

• What is the warranty information?

• Do their products show up with packaging from your trusted American brands?

“You can always be assured that when you get an Illusions Vinyl Fence manufactured using EverStrong Profiles components, that you’re getting a domestically produced product,” DeLuso adds.

Advantages of Composite Fencing

After entering the commercial marketplace in 2007, composite fencing has earned its reputation as a low-maintenance, environmentally friendly favorite. The fence professionals at Armor Fence in Northern Virginia say composite fencing has become one of their most popular products.

Composites are materials manufactured in high-pressure molds, typically recycled plastic and wood, ground finely and fused by resins. The process creates a lightweight, weather-resistant, durable building material. With advances in technology the integrity of composite products has really improved, and the versatility of the material has translated into an amazing

array of fence applications, and customers are taking notice.

The team at Armor Fence says the appeal of composite fencing comes from its low maintenance, longevity and versatility. Another factor, which is becoming more important to customers is that composite is environmentally friendly since it is made almost entirely from recycled materials.

Other key features of composite fencing products include:

• Lightweight and easy to install

• Low to no maintenance – no sealing or painting and cleans easily

• Durable and long-lasting

• Aesthetically pleasing – many styles and finishes available

• Resistant to fading

• Resistant to mold, decay, and rot

• Impervious to insects

• Resistant to warping

• Stain-resistant

• Self-contained – requires no special tools

• Often wind resistant

• Environmentally friendly

Most composite fencing lines now offer a wide selection of styles, colors, and finishes, to suit the requirements of any project.

A respected leader in the fencing industry, Barry Marrs, owner of Security Contractor Services, Inc., says those who work in the industry exemplify the best of America: they have honesty, integrity and commitment. His extensive career path gave him a wide variety of experience in several locations, eventually putting him at the helm of SCS, headquartered in North Highlands, California.

DESCRIBE THE GROWTH OF SECURITY CONTRACTOR SERVICES (SCS) THROUGH THE YEARS.

SCS started as a small wholesale manufacturer in 1973 based in San Jose, California and has grown into three divisions focused on four different markets. The wholesale division manufactures and distributes chain link fencing material to fencing contractors and the rental division handles temporary fencing to contractors around construction sites, special events and repair sites from fires and accidents. In 2007, the company acquired Capitol Steel Products which manufactures custom ornamental iron products. In all, SCS/Capitol Steel have 10 operating units spread from Southern California to Seattle, Washington, serving the entire West Coast, Hawaii, and Alaska.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT WORKING WITH FENCING CONTRACTORS?

I have been in the fencing industry for 55 years. I’ve remained in the business because of my love for the fencing contractor. I’ve had the great honor and privilege to work with a group of individuals throughout the fencing industry that exemplify the best of America. The honesty, integrity, and commitment to their customers, suppliers and employees is great to see and I am honored to be part of that community. Most contractors are family owned and operated, looking to support their families through hard work, integrity and honesty in all they do. I’m proud to be part of such a great industry.

WHAT IS YOUR CAREER BACKGROUND?

In 1967, I joined what was then known as Master Fence Fittings, located in La Habra, California as an inside salesperson. In 1969, I became an outside salesperson covering Southern California and Southern Nevada. In 1971, I moved to Denver, Colorado as a branch manager where I stayed until 1978. In addition to my duties, I assumed the responsibility for representing national accounts, such as Sears and Montgomery Ward. In support of my duties with the national accounts, I moved to Chicago, Illinois as a regional manager with continued responsibility for national accounts.

In 1981, I moved back to Southern California to assume the role of regional manager for the West Coast. In 1983, I was promoted to vice president of marketing for the new Master Halco company that resulted from the merger of Master Fence Fittings and Halco Fence and Wire of Dallas, Texas.

In 1991, I was promoted to president of Master Halco and remained in that role for 12 years. In 2003, I left Master Halco and in January of 2006, I purchased Security Contractor Services, Inc. from the Honoré family of San Jose, California. I remain the owner of the company and have full responsibility for the company’s performance.

HOW IS BUSINESS?

In my 17 years of ownership, the company has grown over 500%; in the past five years, we have grown over 120%.

HOW MANY EMPLOYEES DOES SCS HAVE CURRENTLY?

Approximately 250, adjusted seasonally.

HOW HAS THE FENCING INDUSTRY CHANGED THROUGH THE YEARS?

Many changes have occurred, some for the better, some not so much. The overriding themes of the past 20 – 30 years are:

• Consolidations among the larger companies

• Dramatic expansion of product offerings to the fencing industry. Those who attend FENCETECH over the years have noticed an expansion of products from chain link being the dominant player to other products such as wood, plastic, and automatic gate operators taking center stage.

WHAT TYPE OF LEADER ARE YOU?

I think of myself as a conscientous manager focused on building the company. I believe in setting a plan and allocating resources to achieve the plan while delegating daily responsibility to achieving the plan to my management team.

HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED?

I love what I do and the industry in which I have the honor to do it. I can’t think of anything I would rather do than to come to work each day to tackle the challenges and opportunities this wonderful industry provides.

Start-Up Stories

Tim’s Fences

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.

Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.

Tim Weyand liked the idea of being able to work for himself and have a career doing something meaningful where he was in control. After being laid off in the oil business for the third time, he decided the time was right.

“I had just built my own fence and a neighbor complimented me on it. Then I built a friend’s fence and I thought, ‘I can do this.’ I needed to pay bills and put food on the table. At that time, my dad worked for me part-time for free. My priority was, and continues to be, building trust with my customers by doing the right thing,” Weyand explains.

Today, Tim’s Fences is entering it’s 25th year. Located in Stafford, Texas, near Houston, the company has done well. “I began this venture by beginning from scratch, graduating from the school of hard knocks,” he says.

“So much has changed over the years. Thanks to technology, people can visit my website and get a pretty good idea of what we can do and receive a ballpark estimate. We’ll still visit to provide a hard estimate, but this technology gives the client an idea of the cost without ever leaving the couch. While I embrace the technology, I’m also glad some things haven’t changed. Good recommendations from former clients are the best way to gain new customers and I’m grateful for the great reputation we have,” Weyland says.

In the early days, Weyland drove through Houston, studying fences of all types: how they were made, the materials used, and what he could do differently. He started tweaking and expanding on the ideas.

Tim’s Fences offers products specifically targeted for the Houston area, such as metal posts for wood fences and galvanized, powder-coated ornamental iron, along with cedar, prefabricated steel, composite, chain link and welded wire and gate options. They work with commercial and residential customers.

“The beginning days of my business are a bit unusual, since I didn’t start with another company. I didn’t work for a distributor or have contacts within the fencing industry. I started with a clean slate, a desire to control my destiny as much as possible and build a great reputation for customer service and quality workmanship,” says Weyland. “

He, along with his team of 15 employees, participate in continued education to stay up to date on the latest options. “For every job we do, my team and I are committed to making sure our expectations and the customer’s expectations are the same,” he says.

In 2023, If You Don’t Spring Forward, You WILL Fall Back!

Things are still up in the air quite a bit regarding the economy, but I think we need to look forward to what comes after the spring season, and preparing for that while trying to keep up with all the things that go on this time of year. We ended 2022 in kind of a flat period, where the Covid-driven peaks and valleys of the marketplace leveled off for the fence industry.

We should finally start seeing some of that infrastructure money that was appropriated last year coming into the economy. We should all start seeing local jurisdictions and the federal government beginning projects that had been behind schedule, and new projects should be getting underway in the very near future. This speaks well for the industrial, commercial, and high security parts of the fence market. Of course, we should also start seeing a pickup in the home improvement market as things start to thaw out across the northern tier of the United States after a bitter winter.

And, let’s not forget that some of those newer markets, such as renewable fuels, should also be heading in an upward direction as the incentives being offered by the government should start taking hold.

In order to take advantage of what has normally been a good [part of the year for the fence business, here are three things you can do to get to spring forward now so that in the won’t fall back later in the year.

1) Spring for the social media money. You’ve put it of long enough. Don’t let generational squabbles (more about that in a later column) over technology vs. ‘tried and true’ marketing strategies hold your company back anymore. We all live in a click-through world whether we like it or not, so bite the bullet and put some money into social media marketing. Don’t listen to the stories about how Twitter and Facebook are going to be going out of style (if not out of business). Besides, it doesn’t matter what platform is the most popular – what matters is having a presence on some platform. The whole

point is not to just have a place where potential customers and business partners can click and go to your website. The idea is to get them to feel that every click on your social media click platform is getting them one step closer to a solution to their problems. That means you still must combine content, clarity, and “clickability” into your social media efforts.

2) Spring for effective employee recognition programs.

Spoiler alert! Attracting and keeping top level employees is still the biggest challenge in the fence industry. I am guessing you already knew that. The most important part of that is the “keeping” part. The cost of employee turnover is cutting into already small profit margins on too many jobs. Instead of watching that money walk out the door for a few more dollars per hour, invest some money now to keep your best people. Some of newer, more effective employee retention efforts have included:

Be sure you are matching the right managers with the right people

Even your most experienced managers and supervisors will run into situations where personality clashes or generational differences will cause some friction in the workplace or on the jobsite. Let everyone know there are opportunities to find the right spot in your company to feel comfortable and make their best use of their abilities.

Be sure everyone knows their role in making the company successful

Personalize your employee recognition efforts. Let each individual employee know specifically how what they are doing every day is helping your company reach its goals. Make sure that everyone knows your vision for the company’s future, and that you want them to be with you to make it happen.

Be sure you are recognizing good efforts up and down the line

Do not have recognition and incentive programs that only reward top achievers. Not everyone has

a sales quota that they can reach or exceed. Find reasonable, measurable goals for every employee and reward based their achievement of those goals.

3) Spring for some small stuff now – it will pay of later.

Whatever type of business you run, the “customer experience” is still the most vital aspect of longterm profitability. You need to map out your customers’ entire experience in dealing with your company and determine how each step of that experience can be improved.

For example: If the customer’s first contact with our company is usually via the telephone, how do we answer calls? What is the appropriate greeting? Do customers have to listen to a voice message and then a menu of options? Is our phone system designed to make our day easier, or the customer’s day easier? Which is more important?

You’d be amazed at how much more profitable your company can be by making sure the little things that keep customers and employees happy are reviewed and upgraded on a regular basis. Identify those key pints where you are going to make or save money in 2022 and spring for the investment in them right now. Hopefully, there won’t be any fall this year.

As executive vice president of Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute for 38+ years, Mark Levin is also an author and avid promoter of the fence industry. He believes in the successful leadership qualities he promotes, including listening, delegating, consensus building, communications and effective decision-making.

CASH IS KING Tips to Collect Payments Efficiently

My advice is to avoid unnecessary risks, especially this year. Protect your assets, circle the wagons, and focus on reducing your outstanding accounts receivable. Cash will again become king; try to collect your money asap.

Effective collection procedures begin immediately upon the completion of residential jobs and with set payment procedures prior to commencement for industrial and commercial jobs. The elimination of problems before the payment due date will greatly enhance the ability of the company to be paid on time. Collection procedures must be based on persistent and constant follow-up with a mixture of controls that become increasingly severe. It should be noted that the collector should never threaten to initiate legal action unless you intend to follow through.

Here are the fundamentals of a good collection policy:

• Collections begin first by creating a satisfied customer. Whether residential or commercial, it is difficult to collect if a customer is not completely satisfied. Therefore, the first step is to address customer concerns and then request immediate payment.

• If the job is residential and the foreman does not collect payment upon completion, then timely billing procedures with well-defined payment terms are necessary. If the job is commercial, then establish a pre-determined payment plan ahead of time.

• Preparation and review of a weekly accounts receivable aging list.

• Persistent follow-up using standardized collection procedures.

Poor follow through on collections can wipe out your sales efforts and excellent crew performances. I have seen too many fence contractors mail out the invoice and then forget about it until next month when, if not paid, they again simply mail out another invoice, and so on. This is absolutely the wrong approach.

For commercial accounts, the collection procedure begins prior to the bid review, with a determination by management on the credit worthiness of the GC or developer. If the commercial account is deemed too risky, you may be better served not to even submit a bid; if it’s deemed to be credit worthy, then upon a successful bid and acceptance of the contract, a confirmation that credit worthiness is established. Current credit information must be on file and updated as necessary.

For most government, state and many larger commercial jobs, a Payment and Performance Bond may be required to assure the work will be completed according to the specs and that you will be paid, but as many of you already know, that still does not guarantee payment and collecting good credit info is still a necessity.

The credit file must include all the pertinent information about the account: customer name, address, telephone number, and terms must be recorded. Obtaining a D&B credit rating is advisable and verification of the ability to charge (and who is authorized) must be noted.

Once the contract is signed, the materials have been ordered and work has begun, do not be afraid to mail invoices early. That way, the person in charge has plenty of time to plan to allocate payment. Don’t wait until the last minute, or even worse, until the account is past due to take action. Know the billing cycle of your customer. Do they pay bills at the beginning, middle, or end of the month? Be sure to have your invoice in their hands well ahead of the billing cycle.

Establish and adhere to strict credit policies. For example, if the account has a balance that is more than 30 days past due then payment should be requested before additional work is completed and no more materials are to be delivered until the balance is made current. If

there is retention and/or payment schedules for materials and percentages of completion, the same current billing status must be maintained.

If the commercial account falls past due during the work whether or not a Payment Bond is applicable, immediate notification must be given to the appropriate person. Do not jeopardize any Performance Bond you have been required to complete but try to be as firm as possible without being threatening, and act as soon as possible when your commercial account is delinquent.

For residential accounts, it is usually the responsibility of the foreman and/or salesperson to let the customer know the approximate date the work will be complete and arrange for the customer to be present to inspect, approve and pay for the job. If payment cannot be made that day, then contact the customer the following day. Ask if they are satisfied then ask for payment.

It sounds simple enough, but too many times, procrastination creeps into collection efforts. It’s a dangerous habit and must be avoided. The longer you wait to get paid, the harder it is to collect your money.

I will be delving into the details of this topic in my two educational sessions at FENCETECH 2023 in Oklahoma City at the end of February. This will be a very important FENCETECH and I encourage everyone to try to attend.

In the sessions, I will hand out free detailed accounts receivable collections procedures; the best procedure in the fence industry. I have used this with my fence industry clients for decades with great success.

Collections comes down to two choices: persistence vs. procrastination. If you are persistent, you will get paid. If you procrastinate, you will go out of business.

Management Corner

Managing a business is one of the most challenging things to do. Not everyone has a natural talent and many put in a lot of work to get it right. According to US Labor Statistics, roughly 20% of small businesses fail within the first year, so it pays to be aware of smart strategies.

Effective business management can be learned, regardless of how long you’ve been in business. LinkedIn.com offers these tips for good business management:

PRIORITIZE

It’s easy to get mired in the small details but keep the big picture in mind. Identify your goals, customers, and vendors and make sure you’re allocating enough time so that each one does well.

DELEGATE

Business owners wear many hats, but if you’re not handling key parts of the job well, then find someone who can and give them the authority to do a great job.

KEEP YOUR EXPENSES IN CHECK

You need enough inventory to supply your customers, but too much is a drain on your resources. It may take a few adjustments but aim to find that sweet spot.

TREAT EMPLOYEES WELL

Your employees are your team. They are an extension of you and your vision. Maintain good communication with them and listen to their ideas.

NEVER GIVE UP

All business owners must deal with unforeseen challenges and difficult decisions, but everything can be handled given the right attitude and enough time. Work hard, make informed decisions and stick to your goals.

Developing a good business management strategy doesn’t happen overnight. Mistakes will be made but trust the process and listen to your instincts.

ARE YOU LEAVING A PAPER TRAIL? Secure Document Management Practices

Even in the digital age, businesses deal with paper every day. Employee records, client records, bank statements, receipts, insurance policies, vendor invoices, tax returns, credit card bills and even junk mail contain information that can be used to steal an identity and their money. Here are some best practices to follow to ensure your business and employee records are managed in a safe and secure way. And with tax season right around the corner, it’s a good time to purge older financial documents you no longer need to keep.

RESEARCH FEDERAL AND STATE LAWS ON RECORD RETENTION PERIODS

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all rule that applies to the various records you may have. Several federal agencies set document retention policies as well some at the state and local level. Therefore, it is a good practice to categorize your files and then find out how long you need to keep each set.

DEVELOP A RECORDS RETENTION POLICY

Using the required record retention period for your field, develop a document retention policy. A document retention policy helps your employees understand what is considered confidential information, what documents should be filed and what documents should be shredded. Having this policy in place sets an expectation for how employees manage company data from creation through destruction.

To develop your policy, start by asking these five questions. If the answer is “YES” to any question, then the document should be shredded:

-Does it have any personally identifiable information?

-Does it contain information protected by privacy laws?

-Does it violate any privacy laws?

-Does it share any confidential corporate information?

-Does the document list any financial information?

DESTROY DOCUMENTS THAT HAVE REACHED THEIR RETENTION PERIOD

Secure shredding is an ideal solution for the destruction needs of your business. Shredding prevents identity theft and data breaches, frees up valuable office space, is environmentally friendly and is required by law to protect your employees and clients. There are companies that offer pick-up and shredding for businesses with large volumes of documents, and they recycle the shredded paper.

CONSIDER OFFSITE STORAGE

An offsite document storage facility can help you keep your important business documents secure and organized. Many facilities offer an indexing system to help you find what you are looking for quickly as well as assist with retention, destruction, and other record management criteria. Keeping records offsite also protects valuable company data from unexpected damage should a disaster strike, such as a flood or fire, allowing your business to get back in operation faster.
