Cable Fence Offers Durability and Distinctive Designs Aluminum cable fencing provides beauty, safety and exclusive features for residential and commercial properties. “Digger Specialties Inc. is one of only a few companies in America to manufacture and sell aluminum cable fencing,” says Larry Boyts, vice president of sales and marketing for Digger Specialties. “We’re proud to be a leader in providing this unique product.” The fencing system combines aluminum posts and rails with thin, vertical stainless-steel cables and aluminum pickets. “These thin cables and pickets allow for a full, unobstructed view of the surrounding areas,” explains Boyts. The aluminum cable fencing sections are pre-assembled, tensioned and ready to install. It is also pool code approved. fencing options are extensive. “No other aluminum fencing manufacturer offers as many color choices to compliment a residential or commercial structure,” says Boys. “Our production process is the most comprehensive in the industry. We have a 10-step powder coating system; our process is PCI 4000 certified. The result is a fencing system that provides a lasting color-fast finish that resists the elements and stands the test of time.” DSI cable fencing is available in tworail or three-rail designs. The two-rail design is offered in 48-1/2” height and the three-rail design is available in 48” and 54” heights. Chain Link Sales

SOAR

Despite Pandemic

While the pandemic has certainly caused many hardships for companies in the fencing industry, Pine Creek Chain Link in Bremen, Indiana, has found a positive side to it.

Sales of their chain link fencing have increased since the time the pandemic was recognized. Josie Borkholder, coowner, feels they are related. “As people were at home more, they became more aware of items that needed to be secured and improvements they want to make to their properties. We’ve received an increase in orders from contractors working with their customers who are wanting chain link to secure their homes and business properties.” “Establishing a perimeter can help deter theft,” explains Lyndon Miller, co-owner of Pink Creek Chain Link. “Chain link is a great option for marking the outline of property. It’s affordable and durable.” Pine Creek recently obtained their own weaving machine and can produce chain link

in-house and accommodate various thickness and style of the galvanized steel wires, depending on the level of security, height, and durability needed. This aids them in fulfilling orders and not being disrupted with supply chain delays. “We’ve all been affected by the pandemic; it’s been difficult for everyone. At the same time, it’s nice to recognize anything positive that may have occurred because of it. We’re thankful for the increased volume of sales and we’re glad to do our part to help homeowners and businesses enhance the security of their property and belongings,” says Borkholder. Market research shows that demand for chain link fencing is expected to continue to rise for the coming years as homeowners utilize their backyards more and security measures increase around commercial, governmental, and institutional buildings. Those reasons along with the affordable pricing of chain link compared to other fencing products give it a strong forecast for increased sales. o t t a g d i v da Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the everpresent worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it. Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.

MARCH 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

It Was Like a Puzzle, Finally Coming Together “I had less than $200 to my name and no vehicle,” says David Gatto upon the startup of his company Future Solutions Fence & Fence Supply in York, Pennsylvania, in 2014. Today, the company is housed in a 15,000 square-foot-building with a large production floor, showroom, eight fulltime employees and 12 dedicated subcontracting teams. “It’s amazing to looking back at this journey as we get ready to open our second location and second LLC dedicated to distribution,” Gatto says. “Through this I met my wife, had four children and we bought our dream home.” Rewinding a bit, back in 2014, Gatto quit his job at a tire factory. He went doorto-door to see if anyone had fencing jobs he could do. “You could find me working seven days a week, hand-digging holes for fencing. I saved enough money for a truck and I was proud of it. Eventually, I was able to hire a helper and then another. Our reputation grew as word-of-mouth spread and more jobs were done. A second truck was purchased. Things were beginning to pick up, slowly.” He says the business was like a house of cards. “One false move and it could collapse. More than once, I almost went out

of business. I had to sell most of my tools and return things I had bought for my onebedroom apartment to pay for materials for a job.” Soon, a friend let him use a small shed behind a warehouse where he could store a few tools and keep some extra concrete dry. There were four companies in that warehouse. One day, one of the tenants decided to leave the space. Gatto spoke with the owners and asked about renting it. The rent amount was $1,000 a month. “I didn’t think I could afford it, but I took a risk and said yes. I remember looking at that space and asking, ‘How can I make money here?’”

“We built tables from scrap materials, long enough so we could cut lineals, and we set up compound saws at the end. We made a table we could route posts on and made jigs to guide our hand routers. I bought a forklift. I took every penny I had earned and bought a truck load of materials,” he says. “It was a big risk, everything I had was on the line. I remember the day the truck came; I was so excited. In the midst, I remember knowing I was wired for this. It was like a puzzle, finally coming together.” Gatto noticed an ad for a table CNC machine. “It wasn’t one used in the fence industry, it was a machine for carving signs,” he explains. After a little negotiating, Gatto bought it. “It barely fit in the space we had. This thing was old. Once we got everything hooked up, we weren’t sure how to use it. There weren’t even any YouTube videos for it, it was that old. I played with this machine non-stop, trial and error. I learned geometric code and started writing every program from scratch to cut any design we could sell. I had to set spindle speed, spindle direction, feed rates, rapid movements, etc. I had to break every movement down into millimeters for accuracy. Eventually, I had it mastered. I would run back and forth from one end of that CNC to the other, clamping materials, taking measurements, making sure it was cutting correctly, documenting things that needed to be addressed, but most importantly, selling fence.” Soon that machine made money. The warehouse owners had a large portion of the space coming available soon. Gatto went to look at the space, it was completely trashed, damp, and dark with only one or two working lights. Rent was $3,000 a month. “I swallowed hard. This was risky, I could lose it all. I put my fear aside and said ‘yes’ again,” Gatto says. “Through all of this, never had I been happier as I saw my business growing wings.” Gatto remodeled the whole place, making it into two offices and a large production floor with a staff breakroom. “The house of cards was really big now. One small breeze and she could collapse,” he remembers. He hired more employees and obtained more materials. “Then, we bought an SSD 2-bay router. That changed everything. It was easy to use, child’s play compared to what were used to with the table CNC.” More space in the warehouse became available. Gatto acquired it and turned it into a showroom. After a bit more time, the final space in the warehouse was now available. With that came another office and an aluminum production floor, along with an expanded yard and employee parking. As Gatto thinks back through it all, he says, “I wouldn’t change a thing. All things are possible.”

with

Coley Scott, Jr. OWNER/PRESIDENT, KEENER DUPONT WIRE

A man with many stories and a true appreciation for his role in the fencing industry, Coley Scott, Jr. with Keener Dupont Wire is an example that humbleness and hard work still win in business. His traditional approach to business puts a lot of value in a person’s character and it’s led to many years of success. HOW AND WHEN WAS KEENER DUPONT WIRE FOUNDED? Keener Dupont Wire originated in Panama City, Florida. It moved to Louisiana in 1968 when my dad bought the company in 1971 and I’ve been part of it since 1975. The company location moved from Plaquemine, Louisiana, to our current place in Prairieville, Louisiana, in 2004, the same year I officially became owner. Our new location is about three times the size of where we were. YOU MENTIONED THAT PERSONAL SERVICE IS AN IMPORTANT ASPECT IN OUR INDUSTRY. WHAT MAKES IT A CRITICAL PIECE OF YOUR COMPANY? It boils down to the fact that we are problem solvers, you have to “work the problem, don’t let the problem work you”. Our customers know that we will help them find the product they need, even if we don’t sell it. I’ve even had calls come in late in the evening and shipped out the materials they need on the evening bus. I try to do all I can to meet their need, If we don’t produce it, which doesn’t happen often, then I’ll try to find a resource for them. My customers, my suppliers and my employees, they are the critical ones in the mix, I’m just the one to coordinate it. So being the owner I get to just link everyone together and can’t do it without all of them. This is why I believe in personal service, not just to my customers but my employees and suppliers as well. 22

MARCH 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

I’ve learned over the years that you get out what you put in. I’m right there with my customers, getting them what they need, partnering with them to solve their problem. I appreciate all the return business we have; we have so many loyal customers.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BUSINESS TECHNIQUES YOU’VE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY? I’ve found that most people are honest. If you keep a channel of communication open with your customers, you know how their business is doing. We’ve had only a handful of bad accounts in my 47-year history. That’s because we try to know our customers. It goes back to our commitment to personal service. I believe that helps us in every way in this business.

DID YOU ALWAYS ENVISION YOURSELF IN THE FENCING INDUSTRY? I enjoyed studying electronics in high school. After graduation, I had some offers from other companies. In the end, I decided I really enjoyed the fencing business and continued working with my dad here at Keener Dupont Wire. I can’t envision myself working in any other industry. I wouldn’t change anything; I actually enjoy coming to work every day.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? I truly appreciate all the friends I’ve made over the years in this industry. The people are what make this so enjoyable. We have customers in every state of the country, except Alaska. Most of our business comes from personal referrals and from other companies. When you treat people well, they remember it and they are glad to recommend you to other businesses. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY AS A HOBBY? I’ve had several hobbies over the years. I’m a ham radio operator. I had my pilot’s license for many years and enjoyed flying. I had a Harley for years and my wife and I drove from Prairieville, Louisiana, to Las Vegas and back several times; we had a wonderful time with each trip and met so many friendly people. DO YOU HAVE OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS WHO WORK WITH YOU IN THE BUSINESS? My son Thomas is my general manager. He started working in the back in production for several years, because you have to know how to work it before you can start solving problems with customers. After a few years of that, I moved him to the front and he answered every phone call for five years. That helped him learn quickly the pulse of our customers. Now, he knows almost as much as me. Almost. My daughter DeeDee has been with us for several months. She’s a machine operator and is progressing in her knowledge of how it all

works. We are looking forward to her next steps. But I have to remember that I’ve been doing this for 40-plus years and they are not going to learn it all in a few weeks. I found that some of the institutional knowledge that we have with 40+ years has to be experienced and can’t be just taught. But it’s wonderful when your family is part of the business. WHAT DO YOU ENVISION FOR THE FUTURE? We have plans to expand our storage and manufacturing capacity because we are anticipating more growth. Our current location has 16,400 square feet and we’ll probably expand that soon. WHAT ADVICE HAVE YOU FOLLOWED OVER THE YEARS? Someone once told me, “If a man will lie to you, he’ll steal from you.” I’ve made it a point to observe people and do my best to work with honest people. You can get to know someone’s character if you pay attention. I’ve been fortunate to do business with so many good people.

PVC and Composite Fencing

Affordability, sustainability, resistance to environmental damage, and easy maintenance – these and more are reasons many people turn to PVC and composite fencing. In addition, options of finishes give a variety of looks. Check out what some experts have to offer in the world of PVC and composite fencing.

Barrette Outdoor Living’s Horizontal Vinyl Fencing with Decorative Screen Panel Top is a twist on traditional lattice top fencing.

Vinyl Fencing Reimagined With more contemporary designs recently added to Barrette Outdoor Living’s vinyl fencing portfolio, the company now offers several on-trend and in demand horizontal styles. Much like the popular shiplap exterior and interior projects that are the rage on home design shows, contemporary horizontal vinyl fencing can instantly modernize any property with its straightforward styling and clean, sleek lines. And as with all vinyl fencing, it inherently comes with the added benefits of ease of maintenance and longlasting durability. “We’ve seen the market trending to a popular style of wood and vinyl versions of horizontal fencing for the past few years,” says Patrick Ianni, Director of Product Management at Barrette Outdoor Living. “In response to the growing demand for more contemporary, design-forward alternatives, Barrette Outdoor Living recently expanded its vinyl fencing portfolio to include a more robust line of horizontal options — including two styles that are exclusive to the American manufacturer.” Leading the pack of its new designs is the company’s Horizontal Solid Privacy Vinyl 24

Natural Wood Grain Vinyl Fence Can Add Beauty to Backyards

National Vinyl Products (NVP) designed its Timberland Series of wood grain vinyl fence to meet the need for the beautiful aesthetic of a traditional wood grain fence without the costly and timeconsuming maintenance. NVP’s wood grain vinyl fence is designed to be durable and less susceptible to moisture damage, rot and brittleness than traditional wood fences. This leads to less homeowner expense and a longer-lasting, better-looking fence in the long run. Environmentally conscious homeowners can also be assured of NVP’s eco-friendly practices. NVP designs many of its products – including wood grain vinyl – with recycled materials that do not compromise quality or durability. “Beyond durability and low maintenance, a fence must also look really great around a house,” says Zack Clark, general manager with NVP. “Our Timberland Series of wood grain fence is crafted to look like the real thing, matching the intricate details of natural wood grain and complementing any exterior home color or natural setting.” To get this realistic wood grain appearance, NVP utilizes realistic, non-repeating/random streaking to mimic the look of real wood. An optional two-tone look means posts and rails can be one hue, while tongue-and-groove infill boards can be a second tone. NVP offers a wide selection of color options for their Timberland Series wood grain vinyl fence, from lighter patterns like Weathered Aspen and Coastal Cedar to darker hues like Dark Walnut and Dark Sequoia. Textured wood grain vinyl takes things a step further, embossing the vinyl with an authentic wood-like texture to offer the feel of real wood, making it hard to tell the difference between vinyl and wood. “Our Timberland Series is available in several profile options, allowing contractors the ability to fabricate matching gates, accent fences and ranch rail style offerings,” says Clark. “This profile selection allows developers the ability to create an entire neighborhood using one color theme for all their needs.” “Fences are more than just barriers around a property; they keep the things homeowners love in and those they don’t out, while adding a beautiful background to a landscape. Wood grain vinyl fences make a bold design statement yet blend in naturally with any architecture,” Clark says. NVP is a vinyl fence and railing manufacturer in Nephi, Utah, and is part of the Barrette Outdoor Living family. The company offers a wide assortment of wood grain fences and is focused on continually increasing production capacity to meet today’s high demand. To learn more, visit www.nvpfence.com.

slide into place and lock securely,” says Ianni. Barrette Outdoor Living also launched its kitbased Louvered Privacy Vinyl Fencing, specially designed for warm-weather markets prone to high winds. “Providing privacy and seclusion while allowing increased airflow to easily pass between infill boards for added circulation, this market-driven fence with modern styling is meticulously engineered and is built to meet the most stringent wind codes without the need for custom fabrication,” says Ianni. Lastly, Barrette Outdoor Living updated its line of Mixed Material Fencing to offer more versatile design options with easier installation. This decorative line features matte black

aluminum framing and provides a high degree of flexibility by allowing tongue-and-groove vinyl infill boards* — available in a wide assortment of colors — to be installed horizontally or vertically. Offering both in-ground and surface mount installation, Ianni explains this easy-to-install product features grooved posts that enable infill boards to effortlessly slide into place without the use of brackets. The product can be used as a traditional fence or can be arranged as individual or grouped panels that serve as a divider or privacy treatment. And for even greater customization, Ianni adds that Mixed Material Fencing can be used with the company’s wide variety of DSPs* as a top section.

“With a multitude of options for customization, Mixed Material Fencing is the perfect choice for homeowners who are looking to show a little creativity when selecting a product that helps bring their outdoor vision to life.” For more information on any of Barrette Outdoor Living’s horizontal vinyl fencing products, visit barretteoutdoorliving.com. *Vinyl infill boards and DSPs sold separately.

Neighbor Friendly Residential Fencing

PVC and Composite Fencing

“Good fences make good neighbors,” wrote poet Robert Frost in his 1914 poem, The Mending Wall. It’s a phrase commonly adapted to support the belief that people get along better when they establish mutually agreed upon boundaries. But when it comes to residential fencing, this is more than just an interesting turn of phrase. Fences between neighboring homes can lead to problems even when the homeowners consider themselves “good neighbors.” “Fences can be contentious,” Jarrett Adams, Director, Fencing Category, at Fortress Building Products, says, “but they don’t have to be. For instance, composite fencing panels make it possible to easily install a long-lasting and neighbor-friendly fence.” Good neighbor fences blend good neighbor etiquette with good fence etiquette. It basically means thinking of the neighbors’ perspective when installing a homeowner’s fence so it will be attractive from both sides – the side the fence owner sees from their yard and the side their neighbor sees from their respective yard. Unfortunately, with some fence styles, the homeowner who commissioned the project views the clean, finished side, while the neighbor is left with the more unattractive view of the back side of the fence. For example, with dog-eared wood fencing, one neighbor gets to enjoy the good-looking side of the fence from their yard, while the other is stuck with the not-so-pretty back side, with its exposed matrix of rails. As this type of fence, if built with wood, weathers over time, both parties are often disappointed in the appearance and safety of their perimeter solution. Modern fence material innovations have made it much easier to build a neighbor-friendly fence, according to the Fortress team. With today’s advances in aesthetics, versatility and performance, wood-alternative materials such as composite present an opportunity for homeowners to commission a neighbor-friendly fence that appears finished and attractive on both sides of the property line. Neither homeowner has to compromise and live with a view of the “bad side” of the fence. “Not only do these fences look stunning from either side,” Adams continues, “composite fencing has made it easier to match the warmth of wood without the risk of rot.” As an added benefit, high-quality composite fence boards require no staining and painting—they are virtually maintenance free. Fortress’s good neighbor fence systems empower homeowners to visually enhance their outdoor living space with a beautiful wood-emulating aesthetic, while delivering privacy, symmetry and longevity. While most states don’t have laws in place that require homeowners to install a good neighbor fence, some cities and homeowners’ associations may have rules in place to dictate how a residential fence should be constructed. Be sure to check with your city’s building code and any applicable neighborhood association ordinances to ensure you’re in compliance with any regulations that apply to the property owner when installing a good neighbor fence. There is no question a fence is a property boundary, but the Fortress team says neighbor-friendly design helps minimize any divisiveness over the installation by allowing property owners on both sides to see an attractive, finished fence. Comparing Composites for Fencing Applications One of the biggest trends for outdoor living this year is privacy. As homeowners continue to prioritize safety and sanctuary, they are increasingly seeking ways to augment these elements at home and in their backyards. This bodes well for the fencing industry since no other structure has the power to create such an instant sense of privacy and protection.

PVC and Composite Fencing

According to Edmund Rose, business development manager for Trex® Fencing, when it comes to fencing materials, there are considerable differences in performance, style, and cost. “As the traditional wood market struggles with availability and price, demand for alternative materials is growing,” says Rose. “While vinyl fencing may be the logical heir to wood based on cost, composites are gaining strong momentum, filling a niche for consumers seeking a more natural aesthetic combined with durability and low maintenance.”

Composite fencing, such as Trex® (above on the left), is 2-4x thicker than vinyl fencing.

COMPARING COMPOSITES While it’s easy to think of “composite fencing” as a general category for any fencing not made from natural materials like wood, aluminum or steel, all composite fencing options are not created equal. Rose says Trex fencing, for instance, is made from a wood-plastic composite (WPC) and benefits from the best attributes of both materials. “The plastic provides rot and insect protection, while the wood gives the product density, pigmentation and a natural look. Trex fencing components also are much thicker and more resistant to breakage and

damage than vinyl and PVC fencing options.” Composite products also vary greatly in their aesthetics. “WPC fencing is typically more visually pleasing than vinyl/PVC,” says Rose. “One example is Trex Seclusions, which has a more natural-looking, non-reflective finish and is also made from 95% recycled and reclaimed materials, making it an ideal option for today’s increasingly eco-conscious homeowners.” Beyond backyards, composite fencing is gaining traction across commercial applications as an alternative to masonry. It is less expensive and has a lower impact on landscaping during installation. Some products are offered in horizontal versions, and others can be customized to achieve tall heights. In particular, Rose says Trex fencing has a high wind load capacity and can be built up to 12-feet tall. In addition to durability and aesthetics, one of the most appealing aspects of composite fencing is that it requires minimal maintenance. Unlike wood, composite fencing doesn’t need to be painted or stained – ever. It also resists insect damage and won’t rot or splinter over the years. CONSUMERS DRIVING DEMAND Interestingly, Rose says the demand for composite fencing is driven more by the consumer than by fencing contractors. Today’s consumers are increasingly exploring alternatives to traditional building Trex® Seclusions composite fencing (above right) has materials. “Price will always a natural appeal compared with the more reflective be a factor,” he says, “but look of vinyl (above left). it is no longer the primary consideration. Once a consumer sees options, particularly when there is clear differentiation and added value, such as lower maintenance and extended warranties, they will seek out the best product for their needs before settling on a budget.”

Trex’s distributorship serves customers nationwide, and Rose says they have found commonalities across the country in composite fencing consumers. “One important attribute is that they self-educate. They spend lots of time researching products online and often have a general sense of the differentiating benefits before they call a contractor. This can make for easier consultations – and sales – but only if contractors are also knowledgeable about the various product offerings.” With its many benefits – from material consistency, ease of installation and fewer callbacks for contractors, to the premium aesthetics, superior durability, and minimal upkeep that consumers are seeking – composite fencing has a tremendous opportunity to drive business, profits and referrals. “And, if the upfront cost difference is ever a concern,” adds Rose, “just remind customers that while their neighbors continue to pay to maintain their wood fences over the years, they can sit back and enjoy their attractive, durable, carefree composite fence for decades.” For more information about high-performance composite fencing, visit www.trexfencing.com.

Enter COVID. “The pandemic year and repeated COVID surges threw the industry on its ear and caused every manufacturer, including us, to go into hyper-efficiency mode to handle the demand of a public working from home,” says Christopher DeLuso, chief revenue officer with Eastern. “Over the last couple of years, as we’ve moved through the challenges of the pandemic,” DeLuso continues, “it became clear that choices have gone missing from the vinyl fence industry – at least temporarily. Like a backwards Henry Ford, ‘You can have any color and style of vinyl fence you want, as long as it’s white and solid privacy.’” Originally, in the pre-pandemic years, DeLuso says Illusions’ incredible color and woodgrain choices gave customers more tools in their toolbelt and allowed them the opportunity to close any job that they were able to quote. Who could argue when shown a vinyl fence that looks like driftwood (Grand Illusions Vinyl WoodBond, Driftwood) from their favorite beach? Or the rich look of a walnut wood fence (Grand Illusions Vinyl WoodBond, Walnut) that never needs maintenance? How about a vinyl fence color to match virtually any home or trim, with the ability to combine colors to truly customize (Grand Illusions Color Spectrum) for a customer’s home or business? All of these choices were in addition to the classic, more neutral colors of white, beige, gray or clay that allowed a homeowner to secure their yard with a fence that would last a lifetime at an affordable price. Fortunately, through an investment in extrusion, Peter E. Williams Jr., chief executive officer with Eastern, says things are getting back to normal at Eastern. “In the middle of 2020 we started planning to increase our capacity in extrusion with our new facility. Initially, we were only going to add 50% more capacity to the company with this facility. But with demand being so strong, and with all of the capacity constraints in the industry, we committed to almost tripling Continued on p40

our capacity. We have been bringing on new capacity in our Salisbury, North Carolina, facility quarterly. This plant will be fully operational by the third quarter of 2022 with a total investment of over $30 million and close to 200 new jobs. All this hard work and investing was done to get back to being able to produce Classic White, Beige, Gray, and Clay, as well as the color and woodgrain Grand Illusions Vinyl Fence products again. This will help us better serve the ‘boots on the ground’ fence installation companies as well as homeowners, as we were able to before the pandemic. Eastern now has the capability to return to the level of service that customers built their business models around in the eastern United States.” On top of the added color and style variations, Williams says Eastern has increased not only its production capabilities, but its geographical footprint as well. In 2021 alone, Eastern Wholesale Fence acquired South Camden Iron Works, Inc. of Mickleton, New Jersey; Shoreline Vinyl Systems, Inc. of Denton, Maryland; and Hudson Fence Supply and related companies based in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Additionally, Eastern has opened a new production and delivery facility in Salisbury, North Carolina. With this vastly increased layout, Eastern and its host of vinyl fence and railing brands, including Illusions Vinyl Fence, Hometown Vinyl Fence, Illusions Vinyl Railing, Grand Illusions Color Spectrum, and Grand Illusions Vinyl WoodBond, will be able to provide unparalleled customer service and an industry-leading range of products from New England to Florida. “The past two years were far from easy for any business,” says Williams. “At Eastern, we used this time to learn and adjust so we can restore the product choices we are known for to our customers.” Learn more about Eastern Wholesale Fence’s Illusion product line at www.illusionsfence.com.

Customizing a Vinyl Fence Vinyl fencing has grown tremendously in popularity since it was introduced as a fence material in the late 1970s. Its popularity is a direct result of its low maintenance requirements, affordability, strength, aesthetic appeal and durability. It the early days of its use, styles were limited and white was the color option, but those days are long gone. Today, you are virtually limited only by your imagination when it comes to designing and installing a vinyl fence. This is true whether it’s being installed to provide privacy, create a safer area for children and pets to play, or to enhance a home’s unique style. The versatility of modern vinyl fending is another selling point. Available in a wide variety of styles and colors, vinyl fencing also offers accessories and customization options that will help contractors exceed their customer’s expectations.

PVC and Composite Fencing

Here is a recap of some of the more popular ways to beautifully customize a vinyl fence: SPACING If privacy is the primary objective, fence boards are tightly spaced. If that is not a primary focus of the project, more space can be allowed, which completely changes the look of both the fence and the property. This also provides more a better view of a beautifully landscaped yard. HEIGHT The average height of vinyl fences is 4 – 6 feet. This can also be modified based on the purpose the fence is serving for the property. Taller fences offer more privacy and security. Fences can also be different heights in different areas of the property. For example, taller in a back yard around a pool, and shorter in the front to allow the home and landscape to be more visible. A semi-private option can be created with the addition of decorative toppers, which come in a huge variety of design styles. These add a stylish touch along with height to a traditional shorter fence. COLORS AND FINISHES Vinyl fence color options have come a long way from the original “white only,” although classic white remains a popular choice. It’s traditional, fresh and clean suits almost any home style. Today’s vinyl fencing is designed to inspire creativity, starting with color options. A wide variety of colors and textured finished are available, including completely natural-looking woodgrain options. You can design your fence project to blend in or stand out – whatever the customer desires. STYLES Whether the preference is a simple, classic picket, decorative scallop, sharp modern lines, or some combination, there is an endless array of options to choose from for vinyl fencing posts, pickets, rails and panels. MIXING IT UP What better ways to customize a fence installation than by mixing materials? The contrast between different colors and finishes makes a unique style statement. Try combining posts and trim in one color with panels and/or boards of a different color or finish. Combining a wood finish vinyl post with a metal fencing material creates a completely different aesthetic. That’s the appeal of vinyl’s versatility. TOPPERS Add a distinctive finish to your fence project with post caps. These come in a variety of shapes and styles – everything from traditional architectural shapes to whimsical animal heads to functional solar lights and flower planters. GATES Vinyl gates area as beautiful and strong as the fences they secure. These can be styled to create continuity with the fence line or to make a statement with contrasting colors, fishiness and decorative elements and hardware. ADDITIONS For the customer who is looking for a little something extra with their fence, there are vinyl additions that fit seamlessly with their fence styles, including arbors, pergolas, arched entrances and lattice panels. Another option for customizing a vinyl fence is to actually order it that way. In many cases, vinyl fence, railings, arbors and gates can be customized. Build-to-order customized solutions can help meet the most challenging requests.

PVC and Composite Fencing

Case Study

CertainTeed PVC Fencing Provides Uniformity and Aesthetic Appeal for Staten Island Townhomes When a new housing development is being planned and built, often the builder will leave whether or not to fence the yards up to the residents of the new community. In the absence of HOA fence regulations, the result is often a disorganized and disjointed appearance for the whole community. The new residents can often use a variety of fence materials and styles, and some may not opt to fence at all. Within a year or two of build out and move in, what was conceived to be a cohesive neighborhood has lost its sense of unity. At best, it’s unsightly, and at worst, it can depress property values.

When Savo Brothers, Inc. built Sailor’s Key, a luxury townhome community on Staten Island’s Eastern Shore, they changed their approach to fencing. In their earlier developments, Savo Brothers did not include fences with their finished homes. Like many developers, they left all of the fence decisions up to the eventual homeowners. “We’d let the homeowners choose what kind of fence they wanted, or if they even wanted a fence at all,” says Michael Savo, president of Savo Brothers, “That didn’t work out because you’d see too many different styles of fences from different manufacturers all throughout the community. There was no uniformity.” When they built Sailor’s Key, Savo Brothers decided to provide the same fence product throughout the 90-townhome community. This would ensure continuity and a clean appearance for years after they completed the project. So they hired Gateway Fence, Inc., of Staten Island, to help select a fence product and install it. 44

They preferred the low-maintenance and durability of vinyl fencing, and they chose Bufftech® Chesterfield by CertainTeed. From the seven colors available, they decided on Natural Clay, and they opted for the product’s CertaGrain® texture. CertaGrain gives Chesterfield a realistic wood-grain texture. This allows a vinyl fence to look like traditional wood fencing without saddling the new homeowners with the maintenance issues that can afflict natural wood. The construction of Sailor’s Key was divided into three phases. Upon the completion of Phase One, Gateway Fence began installing the first round of fencing for 48 of the townhomes. Gateway Fence’s crew included its president, Steve Borruso and two assistants. The crew set fence posts along each perimeter and secured each hollow post with two steel reinforcing bars inside. They then filled the posts halfway with cement. Each of the gateposts was also secured by two reinforcing bars, but to add more strength, they were filled

3/4 of the way with cement. Once the posts were set, Borruso and the crew put in the rails of the fences. The precision cut of the Bufftech pieces, and pickets cut on a slight angle for sloped ground, make installation go a lot more smoothly than with other fence materials. Borruso was particularly impressed with the extra strength of the Bufftech gate pieces. “The gates are great,” he says. “The aluminum C-channel internal frame really gives the gates a lot of strength.” The selections made by Savo Brothers and Gateway Fence will serve the residents of Sailor’s Key for years to come. Bufftech Chesterfield fencing will save the homeowners money through significantly reduced maintenance costs, and they’ll add to the neighborhood’s aesthetics and property values. EASY INSTALLATION Tangent’s fencing product line is offered in two easy-to-install styles. The ranch rail system has a technologicallyadvanced fastening system that accounts for potential expansion and contraction of the material. The Gapping Tool™ by Tangent makes installation easy, as it includes exact board spacing for temperature and hole placement. If

a thru-hole fence is needed, installation is as easy as sliding the boards into place. NON-TOXIC Tangent uses a closed-loop manufacturing process that doesn’t produce carcinogens or dioxins. This environmentally-friendly plastic lumber also doesn’t need to be treated with chemicals to make it longlasting, so it won’t leach any chemicals into the environment. INDUSTRY-LEADING WARRANTY Tangent’s industry-leading warranty protects against structural damage for a period of 50 years. ANIMAL FRIENDLY HDPE Boards are impervious to moisture, termites, and other pests. The material is animal friendly, as it doesn’t harbor bacteria and is extremely easy to clean – just use soap and water. It can also absorb impact without the risk of splintering. THE GREENER ALTERNATIVE Tangent takes great pride in being able to help reduce the amount of plastic that goes into the environment through the use of post-industrial and post-consumer HDPE plastic waste like milk jugs and laundry detergent bottles in the manufacturing process. This creates an environmentally-friendly, fully recyclable, plastic lumber board. In addition, since the products are made out of recycled plastic, production doesn’t contribute to deforestation. “Our holistic approach to green building promotes positive effects on the environment throughout the entire life cycle of any project,” says Duffy. From the manufacturing process to the finished material, we go the extra mile to make sure every step is sustainable. Over the years, we’ve kept millions of pounds of plastic out of landfills. Protecting the environment is in our DNA and will forever remain one of our key objectives.” Learn more about Tangent Sustainable Lumber at www.tangentmaterials.com/markets/fencing/.

Trends in Vinyl Fencing

About 20 years ago, vinyl fencing was limited to certain heights and styles and available only in white. Thanks to a lot of research and technology advancements, vinyl is now available in a wide variety of colors and finishes. “Throughout my 20 plus years in the fencing industry, I’ve seen many changes occur within vinyl products,” explains Jessica Burton, president of Poly Vinyl Creations in Florida. “My father, Robert Burton, a pioneer for vinyl fencing in Florida, incorporated many of the trends at my childhood home in Florida growing up. My dad would always tell me that next to Florida, Utah would look like a white sheet of snow in the middle of the summer due to all of the white vinyl.”

As the years progressed, lighter colors in tan and gray hues began to make their entrance into the industry but they were still very light because the titanium dioxide used in vinyl is a very white fine pigment that limited early adoption of colors, especially to provide long-lasting darker colors. However, as the vinyl fencing industry has often mimicked the siding industry (with much simpler profiles), so have the color options available on the market, especially in the last five to ten years. Tan has started to replace white in many neighborhoods because it does not give off the bright white look while the call for more wood-like looks continues to be more appealing. “The trends in color vinyl have skyrocketed in recent years as availability, new technology and demand grows. Initially, about 15 years ago, when colors were just starting to come about, we were nervous about the sustainability and weathering of color products. However, through research, design, and product testing, new formulations, especially over the past five years, have created

time-lasting products from lighter woodgrains to black vinyl,” says Robert Burton, consultant and founder of Poly Vinyl Creations. Initially colors began with the basics of white, tan, gray and clay. Then, mixing the colors and adding variegated or texturing to these colors increased product variety. However, market demand still wanted darker colors. Adding the variegated or the texturing or both helped meet part of the demand, but people truly valued the desire for “wood-looking” vinyl that would withstand the test of time. “Initially for the industry, there was a large trial-and-error process as lab tests and reality do not always mix. However, today one of the most popular formulations to gain the deeper colors involves ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) to reach and sustain long-lasting dark colors,” explains Jessica. “When I first started in the fence industry 15 years ago, there were a lot of subdivisions that would not allow vinyl fencing because it was not aesthetically pleasing as new wood fence,” explains Kristin Zommer, vice president of administration for Poly Vinyl Creations. “But with the onslaught of new colors and textures in new technology, vinyl fence is now on the forefront of achieving the outdoor living concept the market is demanding.”

Whether you have been in the industry for quite some time or are a newer entrant, the past three to five years has shown an uptick in all colors. Whereas white used to be over 90% of sales, it

has now decreased to closer to 70% - 75% of sales with the variety of colors to meet the demands of architects, homeowners, and builders alike. Trends for outdoor living concepts have gained in popularity and are expected to grow for at least another 10 years and the vinyl industry is going to be a large part of that concept. “As a newer entrant to the vinyl industry, I oversee a variety of specialty quoting within our company,” explains Samantha Carr, corporate office manager with Poly Vinyl Creations. “Since I started with the company four years ago, I have seen a continued trend, even during the pandemic, of increased requests and ultimate sales of our color product, specifically our darker color products. While installation requirements differ from basic colors and have been a bit of a learning curve for contractors, when installed properly, these darker colors truly withstand the test of time and increase home values and the aesthetic nature of the property.” “Colors are definitely a process where we expect white and the lighter colors to continue to trend downward,” says Jessica. “Even with the increased costs we have seen in the past 24 months, the demand for specialty colors continues to increase. As demand and ultimately supply increases for the specialty colors, we fully expect that variety and color customization, which is already on the market, will continue to expand. White and even tan vinyl have become more of commodity product lines for the vinyl industry, whereas colors and specialty designs, textures and more are setting itself apart as the premium in vinyl fencing.” Poly Vinyl Creations is a multi-generational corporation with multiple manufacturing locations and a certified Women Business Enterprise firm serving primarily the southeastern United States with specialty outdoor living products to the trade only – no retail sales. Essential Habits to Own and Hone for Greater Success 01 In today’s competitive business climate, you’ve got to work harder than ever to stay relevant in any industry. You need to perform at a higher level than ever before, achieve better results, quickly recover from missteps, and garner the confidence to thrive in times of uncertainty. In other words, you need a modern-day skill set that gives you an edge over your competitors and helps you efficiently reach your goals. As Paul G. Krasnow, author of The Success Code: A Guide for Achieving Your Personal Best in Business and Life, says, “It’s no longer enough to just show up and put in your time at the office. Employers today expect more from you . . . and so do clients.” Krasnow is no stranger to adversity and loss. Following early success in the clothing industry, he experienced a financiallydevastating bankruptcy that forced him to rebuild his life from scratch. He joined Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, where he created an impressive financial portfolio and won multiple “Top Agent” awards. In The Success Code, Krasnow lays out a formula that took him to the top of his industry. Whether you’re starting out in your career, looking for a better job, or already dominating in your industry, these habits will help you excel and surpass your own expectations. 52

MARCH 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

FINE-TUNE YOUR FOCUS. Today’s employees have greater responsibility and less time to complete their work. This forces them to multitask, yet most people are terrible at multitasking. Plus, they are constantly interrupted by email, smartphones, and social media. Krasnow says success often comes down to your ability to tune out all of this “noise” and get focused. Get rid of distractions and temptations until your work is finished. Turn off media, remove clutter from your desk, and limit office chitchat when you have a task to complete. This creates an environment that best allows you to serve your clients and get your work done.

02 ENGAGE WITH YOUR CLIENTS. Building and nurturing solid client relationships is the cornerstone of any successful business. To foster engagement, commit to a personal code of integrity to assure clients you will work hard for them and they are in good hands. Strive to be honest and authentic with your clients and your associates. People will always be

able to tell if you’re being friendly just to make a sale or establish a connection.

03 WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER. Do an audit of how you currently spend your work time. Take a moment to identify your most important recurring tasks, determine how long they take, and identify tasks that could be completed more quickly. Then learn to prioritize your daily goals. Create a to-do list and divide your tasks into three categories: critical, high-priority, and low-priority. Tackle each task in order of priority.

04 HONE AN IDEAL IMAGE. Your appearance should reflect the quality of your services. Think of your health, wellness, and wardrobe as an investment in your success.

05 BECOME A WHOLE PERSON. Live a balanced, rich life in all areas of your existence. No matter how much fulfillment you get from your career, you still need to expand your life and

enjoy all it has to offer. Make time to be present with your spouse, your kids, and your network of friends. Foster a few hobbies. Consider volunteer work. Explore your spirituality. According to Krasnow, regardless of where you are in your career, you will benefit from adopting habits that lead to a successful life and career. You really can unlock your potential if you stop waiting and start becoming the best you yet.

Family Business

and the American Economy

Tom Luby, Business Consultant and Fence Industry Spokesperson

90 PERCENT

ABOUT OF ALL U.S. BUSINESSES ARE FAMILY OWNED OR CONTROLLED. THEY RANGE IN SIZE FROM THE TRADITIONAL SMALL BUSINESS TO A THIRD OF THE FORTUNE 500 FIRMS. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT FAMILY BUSINESSES GENERATE ABOUT HALF OF THE COUNTRY’S GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT (GNP) AND HALF OF THE TOTAL WAGES PAID. The American economy depends heavily on the continuity and success of the family business, and yet, less than one-third of them survive the transition from first to second generation ownership. Of those that do, about half do not survive the transition from second to third generation ownership. At any given time, 40 percent of U.S. businesses are facing the transfer of ownership issue. Founders are trying to decide what to do with their businesses, including: • Close the doors • Sell to an outsider or employee • Retain ownership but hire outside management • Retain family ownership and management control 56

MARCH 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

There are four basic reasons why family firms fail to transfer the business from generation to generation successfully, they are: • Lack of viability of the business • Lack of planning • Little desire on the owner’s part to transfer the firm • Reluctance of offspring to join the firm, or if they do, failing to work effectively as an employee/owner The primary cause is lack of planning. With the right plans in place, the business will remain healthy, in most cases. There are four plans that make up the transition process. By implementing these plans, you will virtually ensure the successful transfer of

your business within the family hierarchy. A strategic plan for the business will allow each generation an opportunity to chart a course for the firm. Setting business goals as a family will ensure that everyone has a clear picture of the company’s future. The family strategic plan is needed to maintain a healthy, viable business. This plan establishes policies for the family’s role in the business. For example, it may include an entry and exit policy that outlines the criteria for working in the business. It should include the mission statement that spells out your family’s values and basic policies for the business. By implementing this plan, you may avoid later conflicts about

compensation, sibling rivalry, ownership and management control. A succession plan will ease the founding or current generation’s concerns about transferring the firm. It outlines how succession will occur and how to know when the successor is ready. An estate plan is critical for the family and the business. Without it, you will pay higher estate taxes than necessary. Taking the time to develop an estate plan ensures that your estate goes primarily to your heirs rather than to taxes. Although it is not easy, the commitment made by all family members during the planning process is the key ingredient for business continuity and success. The first rule for successful operating and transferring the family firm is: share information with all family members, active and non-active. By doing this, you will eliminate problems that arise when decisions are made and implemented without the knowledge and counsel of all family members. Bringing a family member into the business needs to be a well-thoughtout decision, with careful planning and preparation. By communicating clearly, families can ensure the survival of the family-owned business for generations. Build Back Better – In the Fence Industry

by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP Executive Vice President, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute

The excitement is growing because of the influx of dollars from the 2022 infrastructure bill into many parts in the construction industry. Those dollars, combined with the billions that the government paid out to states as part of the COVID relief program, have created confidence that long-delayed projects will start rolling again. In Maryland, for example, the governor has reiterated his commitment to finish the Purple Line, a public transit system connecting two of the counties that border Washington, D.C. There are going to be ample opportunities for the fencing industry to prosper from these infrastructure dollars, as well as from projects that had been slowed down by the pandemic, such as pre-funded military base expansion and upgrades. While it looks like it will be a good period for the fence industry from an economic standpoint, it’s also a good time for the industry to address some new challenges and create some new opportunities. The industry needs to undertake some type of coordinated effort to address ongoing workforce shortages. This has, of course, been a problem since long before the pandemic. We must admit that things have gotten worse and there is no clear course of action that the industry (collectively) has set out to deal with it. It’s still a day-to-day fight to find, train, and retain skilled workers. There are several construction industry workforce coalitions working on this, so where is the fence industry coalition on workforce development?

Everyone should be thinking about being part of FenceTech 2023. What? We just finished FenceTech 2022. We must get back to work. New Orleans 2022 doesn’t count. AFA took (or had to take) a risk on New Orleans this year for several reasons, and it was just unfortunate that timing didn’t work out the way everyone had hoped. We all know that the hardest thing to do is to regain customers (attendees) or partners (exhibitors). If we’re going to rebuild the country and the industry back better, we need to also rebuild the industry’s most important event back better. Fencing companies need to continue developing their value proposition to owners and customers. The industry has been so busy keeping up with demand and trying to find workers and supplies over the past two years that we may have missed some chances to “re-brand” the fence industry’s niche in the broader construction field. With everyone else still scrambling to stay ahead of workplace shortages, this may be a good time to solidify the fence industry’s role as a valued partner on projects. No longer an afterthought, fencing is an integral part of the planning, design, specification, and security requirements of projects ranging from residential homes International IGD Gate Devices and neighborhoods to crossborder electrical power grids. E/Z SLIDE BOTTOM TRACK™ It’s time to stake out fencing’s HEAVY DUTY ALUMINUM TRACK “seat at the table”. It’s time to exert a true leadership role in building the USA back better.

Pronghorn Corridor Enhancement 2021 photograpy by T. J. Schwanky and Jason Headly

by T.J. Schwanky reprinted with permission from Alberta Fish and Game Association

Jason Headly

Pronghorn reach their northern-most distribution in Alberta and are known to conduct annual migrations averaging hundreds of kilometers, often passing through narrow passages en route to key seasonal ranges. Migratory corridors are critically important to ensuring pronghorn remain at sustainable populations. Several documented accounts describe mass mortalities because of barriers to movement. Fences in particular are known to create great difficulties for pronghorn as they are unwilling to jump over them. As lower strands are generally 12”-14” above ground, crawling under often results in serious scrapes that can significantly impact the pronghorn’s health as seen in the photograph on the next page. The migration corridor enhancement will remedy this situation by replacing lower barbed wire strands with smooth wire and at the same time raising them to a height easily navigable by the pronghorn.\ The Pronghorn Corridor Enhancement Project, or Antelope Fencing as it’s more

commonly known, is in its 13th year, and nearly 600 miles of fence in Southern Alberta have been modified to allow easier passage by antelope and other ungulates. Two projects have already been completed in 2021 and a third is scheduled for September. While COVID-19 was our biggest challenge in 2020, it’s the weather that has provided the greatest challenges in 2021. The first fencing of the season was near Orion in mid-July. It involved nine miles of fence line in the Sandhills along Pakowki Lake. Access was via quad and side by side only and getting the ten volunteers moved around provided some logistical challenges. The fire hazard was also very high so extra caution was required. While projects typically involve two volunteer days after the site is prepped and the wire is strung out with the help of Alberta Conservation Association staff, this project required volunteers for three days. Temperatures were above 35 degrees every day and the volunteers put in some long hours under very trying conditions. On Saturday, the temperature rose to 37 degrees. It was Continued on p66

the hottest day in the history of the project, yet we still managed to get four miles of fencing done. Our volunteers really went above and beyond on this project. The second fencing of the year was near Writing on Stone Provincial Park and encompassed 8.5 miles of fence line, adjacent to a large ranch we’ve done several projects on previously. It is great to see landowners embracing the project after seeing the success their neighbors have enjoyed. This connectivity of fence lines ensures much easier passage for antelope. Word of mouth has become the best advertising among landowners for the project. This was a project of weather extremes with temperatures hitting 33 degrees on day one and then day two barely made it into the teens, with rain

all day. While in the 13-year history of fencing we’ve had to work in a couple small showers, this was the first time we ever had a full day of rain. Despite the tough conditions the volunteers quickly made it through the four miles on the final day. A contingent from FenceFast was on hand to keep our staplers running smoothly and service them for the next event. FenceFast has been a partner in the fencing projects for the past six years and lends us three power staplers and supplies our staples. Our volunteers are the heart of this project and as this year has demonstrated, no conditions are too tough for them. Funding for this project comes from a grant from the Alberta Conservation Association and from the Minister’s Special License grant program.
