Operation Second Chance The North American Fence Contractor Association (NAFCA) completed its first service project of 2021 on a windy and bitterly cold day in late January. Despite the weather, the crew installed 300’ of ornamental aluminum for Operation Second Chance, a program to help wounded warriors and their families during their stay at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for surgeries and recoveries.

Operation Second Chance purchased a 270-acre retreat on the Maryland/Pennsylvania border in the small town of Sabillasville. It has cabins, a dining hall, pool with pool house and space for many activities. Operation Second Chance will hold its grand opening on May 1, 2021. A crew comprised of members of Builders Fence, Alumi-Guard, and Log Cabin Fence installed the U-shaped fence around the facility’s pool. Builders Fence and NAFCA outgoing president Scott Ruet, spearheaded this project and provided the majority of the labor and man power. Alumi-Guard donated all necessary material and gates. Fence Armor donated their ornamental clip-on fence post protection guards. “The NAFCA is grateful for the generosity of its members,” says Clint Iams, executive director of NAFCA. This project has been completed in memory of Army Staff Seargeant (Retired) Travis Partyka who tragically lost his life the week of January 18. A plaque in his memory will be added to the fence this spring. “The results of this project are typical of a NAFCA service project: great companies provide the people and material to give back to a great organization,” Iams says. “In turn, that organization is able to give back to members of our society who are in need. A tremendous thank you goes out to AlumniGuard, Builders Fence, Fence Armor, and Log Cabin Fence for their support of this project.” A video from the event is available on You Tube, search NAFCA Operation Second Chance Service Project. CONSTRUCTION SITE FENCING

GUIDELINES FOR SET-UP Following best practices when installing construction site fencing ensures that equipment and materials are as safe as possible. According to Giuliano Marinho, PMP Division Manager, with Sonco Perimeter Security, the key goals are minimizing access, eliminating temptation, optimizing long-term productivity while using affordable technology. Here are some tips from Sonco for effective construction site fencing projects:

CHOOSE THE RIGHT TYPE OF FENCING The right type of fencing for a job site will depend on the length of the project and the amount of daily activity. Fence panels come in a wide variety of types that go beyond chain link; however, chain link is the most common option. “High quality chain link fence panels create an effective and affordable security measure around constriction sites,” says Marinho. Other options include wood or steel panels. These can be used in combination with chain link, as well for added security. Wood and metal options would typically be used more for lots awaiting construction or particularly long-term projects. Ultimately, the right type of fencing will depend on each job’s unique characteristics. The most important consideration is making sure the fence panels encompass all accessible areas of the site, whether chain link or any other material. SELECT THE RIGHT FENCE HEIGHT The higher the fence, the more secure the site, is the industry maxim. When it comes to construction site fencing, the most common height is usually between six and eight feet. “Keep in mind that a six-foot fence can be jumped by a more athletic person,” says Marinho, “while an eight-foot fence would need to be climbed. The more time it takes a person to access the site, the more likely they are to be seen. People know this, so they’re less likely to scale a fence than jump it.” He says there’s also the possibility of someone cutting through the fence, in which case the height won’t make a difference. But the lower quality the chain link, the higher the likelihood of access. That’s why it’s crucial to use high-quality, high-gauge fencing. CONSIDER REPLACING SANDBAGS AND CEMENT BLOCKS Some contractors believe sandbags and cement blocks are tried and true, but despite their initial affordability, the constant replacements and restocks can make this option more costly over the long term. Instead, consider upgrading your fencing weights to ballast stands, which are affordable upfront and offer long-term savings when compared to the replacement costs involved with sandbags and cement blocks. Marinho says some Sonco’s block stands and plastic weights also include safety features like high-visibility details and anti-trip design, which adds to their value. CREATE SPECIFIC ENTRY POINTS Regularly moving fence panels that otherwise serve as your wall can mean entry points change regularly. According to Marinho, this is poor practice when it comes to site security that can also create regularly inconsistent fencing that may lead to security breaches. Instead, he recommends Continued on p18 16

creating specific entry points for pedestrians and vehicles. “That way, if someone accesses the site elsewhere, it will raise alarms. This is especially crucial for daytime work activity when motion sensors aren’t feasible. The most important goal is making sure everyone exits and enters through the specific gates. No exceptions can be made if you want to keep security consistently locked down.” IF POSSIBLE, MAKE ROOM FOR PARKING AREAS This isn’t always feasible, but Marinho says fencing installations to minimize access to a job site should extend to worker parking if possible. Having a designated parking area with its own unique security measures (such as a camera in case of theft) means only essential vehicles can enter the site. The fewer comings and goings, the less likely as security breach. This also applies to delivery trucks. Specific areas and protocols must be established before third-party vehicles enter the site. Where will they go to drop off specific materials and equipment? Is there an entry and exit route established? Make sure those questions are answered up front. Then, if something goes missing and a plan is in place, it’s simple to trace back the cause – or the missing commodity itself. USE PRIVACY SCREENS TO PREVENT VANDALISM AND THEFT Temptation and opportunity are two big factors when it comes to spontaneous vandalism and theft. Marinho says you’ll rarely have someone casing a site for months before making their move. The more likely scenario is that a passerby sees an area ripe for vandalism or materials they can quickly take and sell, and they act on it. “That’s where privacy screens can provide a deterrent by simply minimizing or eliminating visibility, which removes the temptation for a crime of opportunity,” he says, adding that privacy screens can be customized for safety messages and warnings, or advertising and promotion of the company. “It’s basically highly visible billboard space a company can put into use while also protecting a construction site.” IMPLEMENT ADDITIONAL SECURITY MEASURES Part of an effective fencing solution at construction sites is adding additional security measures, including motion sensing lights, video cameras and warning signage. An even better alternative to motion sensing lights, would be to make sure the entire site is well-lit at all times day and night, although a motion sensor may still be a good method for external

18

MARCH 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

entry points. Today’s motion sensor cameras that alert your mobile device are extremely affordable. Sites willing to spend a bit more money can also implement thermal imaging, fence tampering detection, and other hightech measures. “But don’t underestimate the power of a warning sign,” says Marinho. “‘No Trespassing’ and ‘This Site Is Monitored At All Times,’ signage is an incredibly effective deterrent.” The guidelines above are general and can be applied to fencing for any construction project, big or small and short- or long-term. “Partnering with a perimeter security expert, can add proven insight and guidance specific to your site to help minimize the risk for theft or vandalism,” says Marinho. “Theft goes beyond simply needing to buy more material or equipment. It can mean project delays and unhappy customers, which can have an even more detrimental effect on your bottom line.”

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO

Security Gates are a physical barrier and a first line of defense; electric gates offer ease and convenience, but how someone gets in and out must be controlled. Gate operators are a critical component of fencing. When security is combined with aesthetics, everyone wins. Fence News delves into the world of access control and gate latches with a look at new products, important details, and safety.

Modernizing Perimeter Security through Remote Monitoring, Management and Maintenance To the untrained eye, perimeter security solutions may appear relatively resistant to the evolving technologies of our time. To casual observers, automating a gate is pretty simple: just open and close it. But, professionals see gates as a key part of their perimeter security system and their needs are evolving. New technology in gate operators is providing tools they need to keep their facility secure. “By integrating an ethernet connection into the gate operator control board, many elements of basic gate operation can be done more efficiently from a remote location,” explains John Allen, senior product manager with Nice | HySecurity. “An example of a product that has done just that is the Nice | HySecurity SmartCNX™, which uses advanced HyNet™ connectivity to give endusers, installers, and service technicians more control and visibility than ever before.” Connected gate operators, like those using SmartCNX controllers, present a novel solution to streamline many hang-ups of gate operation, specifically delivering remote access to monitoring, management, and maintenance: three tasks that when performed remotely can deliver a smarter, safer and more secure experience.

Monitoring “To follow industry standards like UL325, every commercial gate operator must include sensors protecting entrapment zones,” says Allen. “This detection can be used to do more than just sense when to stop. Smart gate operators make use of photo eyes and sensors to alert end-users and service technicians of fault conditions.” Alerts can include notifications if a gate becomes disabled by an obstruction such as a car, object or person. Loitering and unauthorized entry will also trigger alerts. Allen explains that these alerts can be an email or text and can be integrated into a facility security system using the SNMP protocol.

“Automated alerts enable property owners, service technicians, and site security to keep an eye on their gate without the need for onsite supervision; so, in case of an obstruction, a suspicious vehicle, or anything in between, the problem can be immediately identified and acted upon.” Management The days of sending a service technician to a job site to adjust settings on a control board are coming to an end, as connected gate operators allow routine management to be conducted from afar. “For users, this lets them adjust certain settings to alter the operations of a gate in real time. These settings include things like operator speed, how gates handle sensor signals, and adjusting the close timer. And, while a gate operator generally does not require an immense amount of management, that’s precisely why remote management is such an asset: a setting adjustment that takes two minutes no longer requires a physical trip to the site,” Allen says. Maintenance Gate operators do not typically require much maintenance but taking this task remote via an integrated ethernet connection will reduce the need for costly and time-consuming call backs. “For installers and dealers, remote maintenance also enables them to add value to service contracts, as they can identify and solve their customers’ issues before customers are even aware,” says Allen. Remote maintenance also allows service technicians to perform over-theair software updates. Gate operators perform a relatively simple task but, by integrating connected technology like that from HyNet, the monitoring, management and maintenance of an operator can become even simpler. End users and installers who prioritize such connected solutions will find themselves enjoying an easier and more efficient perimeter security experience.

Loops Basics for Gate Operators In the realm of gate operators, inductance loops are often chosen as the main means of vehicle detection. Inductance loops provide convenience to the users of the automatic gate system while also preventing the gate from closing on vehicles. Brian Dickson, president with BD Loops, provides a look at this detection solution. Inductance loops are an accurate and reliable means of vehicle detection. An inductance loop is essentially a coil of wire that is either stuffed into a rectangular or square cut in the concrete or asphalt or is buried in the ground. “An inductance loop requires two to six wraps or turns

“Reverse”/Safety/Interrupt/Reopen/Obstruction: This loop is installed on the inside and outside of a gate. It will reverse a closing gate if a vehicle drives over it. This loop will also hold an open gate if a vehicle stops on it. “Exit”/Egress/Free Exit: This loop does everything the reverse loop does and will also open the gate when a detection is obtained. “Shadow”/Center/Phantom: This loop is only used with swing gates. The loop sits under the swing path and checks before the gate closes to see if a vehicle is in the swing path. While the gate is in motion, this loop will not respond to any detection, otherwise it would detect the gate. “Close”/Down: This loop is mostly found on barrier arm systems. The loop sits under the barrier arm or slightly past it in the direction of travel. Once a vehicle leaves the loop, a signal is sent to immediately close the barrier arm preventing tailgating, or more than one vehicle entering or exiting. “Activation”/Arming: This loop is used in conjunction with an accessory such as a RFID reader, keypad, card reader, telephone

depending on the size of the loop,” explains Dickson. “Smaller loops require more wraps than larger loops. Inductance loops are connected to the operator or control cabinet with their leadin wires.” Loops detect metal objects, including nonmagnetic/ nonferrous metals such as aluminum and copper. For a detection to occur, a metal object must move over the loop after its initial setup. Stationary pre-existing metal near a loop such as rebar or a manhole cover will not be detected by the loop and will instead be taken into account with the initial setup. Dickson details the most common functions for gates.

entry system, camera system/LPR, Pay Station, etc. An activation loop makes it so the accessory will only function when a vehicle is present. Dickson also provided information about loop size and placement basics. “Loops for gates are installed in a square or rectangular shape. Loops need to be placed close enough to the gate so that they can protect the gate path, but also far enough away from the gate that they will not detect the gate while it is in motion,” he explains. “For example, if the reverse loops are installed too far from the gate, it will be possible for a vehicle to be within the close path of the gate, and not be detected, causing the gate to close on the vehicle.” Dickson says the guidelines for loops are as follows: Reverse or Exit Loops • 2 feet from the curb • 4 feet from the gate (5 – 6 ft. for gates over 20’ wide) Continued from p28

• 4 feet from every other loop to prevent cross-talk between loops Detection height is roughly 2/3 the short leg of the loop • Residential Applications – 4 ft. short leg 932” detection height)* • Commercial Applications – 6 ft. short leg (48” detection height) • *If you have space, it is always better to install a loop with a 6 ft. short leg. It will perform better than a loop with a 4 ft. short leg. Shadow/Center/Phantom Loops: Loop placed under the swing path on swing gates. • 4 feet from the gate in its closed position • 4 feet from the gate in its open position • 2 feet from the curb, if single swing system Activation Loops: This loop does not protect the gate path, so it does not have strict placement guidelines like the other loops mentioned. “Activation loops need to be placed where you want to obtain a detection to activate the accessory,” Dickson says. “Check the manual of the accessory being installed for guidance on activation loop placement. Keep the activation loop at least 4 feet away from every other loop.” When it comes to inductance loops, there are two options for choosing the right wire: hand wrap a loop in the field or purchase a preformed loop. Preformed loops generally have sturdier construction and eliminate the need for the installer to worry about the proper number of wraps required for the loop. “Preformed loops save the installer time and materials, such as loop sealant, depending on the design of the loop,” Dickson says. “Preformed loops with an outer jacket have an additional layer of protection versus hand-wrapped loops and they hold up better in marginal surface areas such as cracked up asphalt.” Hand-wrapped loops are made in the field by wrapping the loop from a spool of wire. “Choosing the right type of wire to hand wrap a loop with is critically important,” he explains. “16 – 18 AWG crosslinked polyethylene, marked as XLPE on the wire, is the best choice for wrapping a loop by hand. XLPE has an abrasive resistant insulation, is water resistant, and can handle temperature fluctuations well.” For loop installation, there are generally two types: saw cut and direct burial. Saw-cut loops are the most common type of loop installed. If the concrete or asphalt road has already been poured, saw-cut loops are the only option. A 3/16” – ¼” wide by 1 ½” – 1 ¾” deep square or rectangular loop pattern is cut into the concrete or asphalt. The loop wires are then stuffed into the saw-cut groove and sealed with loop sealant. Direct burial loops are used in applications where the roadway has not been poured or for applications where the loop will be buried in dirt, gravel, or laid under pavers. “If you can install the loops before the road is paved, direct burial loops have some advantages over saw-cut loops,” Dickson explains. “They are better protected by the roadway, less prone to failure, and hidden under the road.” Inductance loops add both convenience and peace of mind for customers who want to protect their automatic gate. To learn more about loops, BD Loops has an abundance of information and educational articles on their website: www.BDLoops.com. In addition, the American Fence Association’s Gate Automation Designer School provides excellent training and certification courses to learn more about automatic gates and accessories. BD Loops is a manufacturer of preformed direct burial and saw-cut inductance loops and loop installation tools for the gate, door, and parking industries. BD Loops products are available through over 450 distributors in the U.S. and Canada.

Ameristar Introduces Exodus Ameristar Perimeter Security has launched a revolutionary pedestrian egress gate called Exodus. “We found the market to be lacking an egress gate that was simple, secure and beautiful,” said Bryan Hudson, Sr. Director of NPD and Engineering Services. “The Exodus design seeks to solve common problems users face when choosing an egress gate for commercial and industrial sites.” The Exodus is designed to mitigate multiple trips to the jobsite by providing an all-in-one gate system with the required panic exit device hardware pre-installed. The non-removable pins and power transfer components produce a secure gate more capable of restricting vandalism and forced entry. The power transfer system makes it easy to integrate the security system of choice without additional labor. Exodus is available in three mounting options and six infill options, allowing the contractor to choose a pedestrian gate that matches the design and

needs of their unique application, as well as the site’s aesthetics and fence system. The three mounting options are flange mount, plated mount or direct bury. Exodus is IBC (International Building Code) compliant. After order, Exodus ships pre-assembled and requires no field fabrication. This design feature saves valuable time and money, resulting in a flawless installation. Exodus egress gates integrate seamlessly with Ameristar’s most popular fence lines: Montage II, Aegis II and Impasse II. Exodus is a perfect gate solution for many applications, including K-12 schools, higher education, stadiums/arenas, apartments and assisted living facilities. Ameristar Perimeter Security (an ASSA ABLOY group brand) is the largest ornamental and security fence manufacturer in the world. Learn more at www.ameristarfence.com or call 888-333-3422.

Ameristar’s Aegis II Xtreme Chosen for EXPANSIVE WILDLIFE BRIDGE Ameristar’s Aegis II Xtreme was used for an innovative project. A 320-foot-long bridge over Interstate 80 in Parleys County, Utah, designed specifically for wildlife to cross the busy interstate below. The bridge is 50-feet-wide, spanning over six lanes of traffic. The ornamental pedestrian bridge railing was chosen for its strength and durability. With a dual ForeRunner rail and multi-layer coating, this product excels in product performance. Another benefit is that it allows for simplistic installation beneficial to the project’s bottom line. The Utah Department of Transportation officials says there were about 100 wildlife collisions reported in the area in the last two years before the bridge was constructed, and there were likely as many as four times that number that were not reported. The $5 million project was completed in December of 2018. Vinyl Industries was chosen to handle the fence installation. Located in Utah, they have been installing fences since 1994. “We worked with UDOT, the general

34

MARCH 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

contractor and Ameristar Fence to get this new product line qualified and approved for the project,” explains Robert Calton, owner of Vinyl Industries. “The whole project included roadwork, infrastructure, the bridge, as well as other components. There were dozens of people from various trades working on it,” says Calton. Vinyl Industries also installed several miles of 8’ high wildlife fence on both sides of the freeway to direct the wildlife to the bridge. “Access to the worksite was limited. We hoisted a Mini Excavator with a crane up onto the bridge, the Excavator was then used to lift the fence panels into place because the panels weighed approximately 200 pounds each,” explains Max Ross, commercial estimator with Vinyl Industries. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources says the project is a success. By helping to safely migrate wildlife over busy Interstate 80, motorists are much safer as well. “The UDOT, the Division of Natural Resources and the locals who live in that area are thrilled with the number of animals using the bridge,” says Ross. “It’s not just for deer and elk; they have seen moose, bears, bobcats and more with the cameras that were installed to monitor the bridge.” Utah is home to one other wildlife overpass, but the new one in Parleys Canyon is much larger. Experts ask anyone who may be hiking or hunting in the area to stay off the bridge so wild animals aren’t deterred from using the crossing.

It is a constant process; if I ever get to the point where I think I have it all figured out, I’ll know it is time to retire! IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE QUALITIES OF AN EFFECTIVE LEADER? I think it’s important to be authentic, empathetic, curious and engaging. Understand where an organization is by listening, collaborate with colleagues

It seems to me, however, that we must get COVID-19 under control to rebuild the travel, hospitality, restaurant and entertainment industries. There is tremendous pentup demand for these things, and I think when they come back, it will provide the economy with a significant boost. Additionally, we need a robust infrastructure bill now; not only to put

COVID-19 HAS GREATLY IMPACTED DISTRIBUTION CHAINS AND PRODUCTION THROUGHOUT THE FENCING AND MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY. WHAT IS YOUR FORECAST FOR THE COMING MONTHS AND YEARS IN RELATION TO THIS INDUSTRY? I remain bullish for the foreseeable future. The underlying fundamentals are strong, provided access to raw materials does not further degrade. This has the greatest short-term impact on our industry. A WORK/LIFE BALANCE HELPS MAINTAIN FOCUS AND ENERGY. WHAT DO YOU DO TO PROMOTE THIS WITHIN YOUR OWN SCHEDULE? t n e m e g a n r e a n M or C Do you feel stressed, anxious or depressed about work these days? You’re not alone. Even before the pandemic, multiple studies have found that living and working in a state of burnout has become the norm for workers across the United States. Add in the global COVID-19 crisis and burnout may be approaching critical mass. A recent survey conducted by FlexJobs and Mental Health America found that 75% of people say they have experienced burnout at work, with 40% saying they’ve felt it during the pandemic specifically. “Burnout” refers to a state of overwhelming exhaustion – mental, emotional and physical. This is more than just everyday stress. It is characterized by overpowering unrelenting stress over a long period of time, which can lead to negative effects on your physical and mental health. Burnout is caused primarily by work pressures and the struggle to balance those with the demands of home and family. Personality – how you respond to stress – is also a factor. The core feeling is one of little or no control over the stresscausing situation. Other contributing factors iinclude lack of recognition for efforts, vague expectation, excessive demands, unchallenging or monotonous activity, peer pressure, lack of social support, limited time for relaxation and sleep deprivation. Awareness of the causes of burnout and managing those is critical, but it’s important to also be aware of the signs that burnout impacting multiple areas of your life in a negative way. Many people frequently dismiss or rationalize these away, telling themselves they just need to work harder and things will eventually get better, but 40

BURN OUT that doesn’t always happen. And the more they focus on being a good boss, a good employee, a good parent, a good spouse and a good friend to others, the more they lose focus on what they need to do for themselves in order to have a healthy, happy, well-balanced life. Burnout can have significant mental, physical and behavioral effects. Warning signs to look for include: • A pervasive sense of failure and self-doubt • Loss of motivation and interest in your job, hobbies or family • A very negative, irritable and impatient attitude • Feeling detachment and distant from the rest of the world • Frequent distraction and an inability to focus • A pattern of memory loss - forgetting where you put things or what you are doing • Extreme exhaustion and lack of energy, feeling completely drained • Loss of appetite, interest in intimacy or insomnia • Frequent/unexplained illness • Chronic headaches, back and neck pain, muscle and joint aches • Increase in conflicts both in the workplace and at home • Change in personal hygiene • Self-imposed isolation and diminished quality of relationships • Extreme procrastination and lack of responsibility • Abusing alcohol, drugs, or food as a way to cope with life

It is much easier to avoid burnout than to recover from it. The time to deal with job stress is when it starts, before you reach a state of burnout. Make an effort to adopt a more balanced lifestyle and protect your boundaries. Say no to unreasonable demands on your time by others, decrease outside commitments and regularly disconnect from technology. Use your vacation days to take a real break. Take care of yourself by getting regular exercise, eating right and getting enough sleep – these are the things that give you the mental and physical strength to cope with the stressors in your life. If you are experiencing the signs of burnout listed above, don’t ignore them. Realize it is necessary to make some changes, possibly drastic ones, depending on the causes and severity of burnout. Talk to a trusted friend or family member, and/or seek professional help. If you don’t take steps to recover, the damage will only continue and the effect on all areas of your life will continue to worsen.

Security Chain Link:

by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP Executive Vice President, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute

Ready to Respond to the New Normal If you were wondering when all those big infrastructure projects that were promised during the past several years were going to start rolling out, keep wondering. If you were among those who thought the chain link market was holding its own during the pandemic, you might want to look again. There were, indeed, parts of the market that were steady and even growing in 2020, but it certainly was not across the board. In 2021, the companies whose products and services can be responsive, cost-effective, and versatile will get the lion’s share of the market. One of those products will almost certainly be security grade chain link fencing. We are LONG past the days when chain link was only thought of as a single-use commodity. It has been the product of choice on security projects in every possible market for many years. As the need for higher security in all public places, governmental facilities, energy plants, and commercial developments becomes more critical, chain link will be provided some tremendous opportunities to be a problem solver. Here is why the chain link fence industry is optimistic about the future:

42

MARCH 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

CHAIN LINK MEETS THE RESPONSIVE-COST EFFECTIVE-VERSATILE CRITERIA. Chain link can be manufactured and installed to provide for a multitude of high security needs, based on outcomes.

A small sampling: 3/8” 11 gauge - Deters climbing and is very time consuming to cut through. Used for prisons, warehouses, chemical plants and refineries, military and government secure areas, both interior and exterior. Visually very intimidating. 1/2” 9 gauge. - Also deters climbing and very time consuming to cut through. It is effective for use in interior partition secure areas, secure areas within a fenced-in area, higher security electrical generating plants, and transmission and substations. Provides some level of impact resistance. *Excellent ASTM F2781 test results 32 31 13.53. 1” 9 gauge - Smaller mesh size is difficult to climb, adds cutting delay time. Effective on infrastructure projects such as building parapet fence and railroad right of way, provides added security for selected areas within a fenced-in area, such as on military and government installations.

IT LOOKS LIKE THERE MIGHT ACTUALLY BE AN INFRASTRUCTURE BILL PASSED THIS TIME. Biden Cabinet: Buttigieg urges big funds for infrastructure. From the Associated Press: President Joe Biden’s new Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, went down a smooth path to quick confirmation, pledging to senators on to work with them to carry out the administration’s ambitious agenda to rebuild the nation’s infrastructure. Newly confirmed Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was extremely optimistic about a large infrastructure authorization. “We need to build our economy back, better than ever, and the Department of Transportation can play a central role in this,” Buttigieg said during his confirmation hearing. While this sounds great, and familiar, companies need to remember on many projects the security fences will be among the last items ordered and installed. That means it may take a while for the money from any infrastructure bill to reach the fencing providers. PERIMETER SECURITY NEEDS HAVE NEVER HAD A HIGHER “PROFILE” The number of public gatherings, such as protests, political rallies, and other demonstrations, is likely to continue to grow, especially after the covid pandemic is over. Parks, city plazas, high security office buildings, etc., need extensive upgrading of their perimeter security to meet future needs for denying access to this wide variety of facilities.

Of course, the attack on the U.S. Capitol in January was the incident that really brought perimeter security to the forefront of everyone’s attention. More than a month after the attack some of the temporary fencing is still in place. There is little doubt that permanent security fencing will be installed shortly, not only in Washington. D.C., but in state capitals throughout the country (the headline in one paper recently read “A double row of chain-link fencing now circles the Arizona State Capitol”). The people in charge of these projects will be looking for identifiable, measurable results. THE CHAIN LINK FENCING INDUSTRY IS BUILT ON PARTNERSHIPS, SO EVERYONE HAS A STAKE IN ENSURING ITS CONTINUED SUCCESS. One of the strengths of the chain link fencing industry is there is a certain amount of “shared risk.” Manufacturers, distributors, specifiers, and contractors must build solid working relationships to assure quality production, timely distribution, professional installation, and accurate specifications. Each of them has a vested interest in all the other partners being successful. That means that there needs to be a mindset of sharing the rewards of a good job, not assigning the blame for a bad one.

The chain link fence industry was able to restructure itself to respond to theInternational needs of the IGD Gate20 Devices country after the 9/11 crisis that occurred years ago. It has regained much of its momentum and E/Z SLIDE™ TRACK market share since the greatSYSTEM recession ofGATE 10 years KIT ago. There is no reason to believe it will not continue to be a leader in meeting the needs of its customers and partners through, and after, the covid crisis. BUILDING A BUZZ FOR YOUR BUSINESS Tips on using social media. No matter how skilled or efficient your crew is, talents won’t matter if you can’t seem to book new clients. Let’s face it: cold calling, direct-mail, billboards and 30-second ad spots are becoming more and more outdated as the years pass. While print media is still one of the best ways to explain a new product or service, there are ways to supplement this medium to get the attention of your target audience. And, in an age where 81 percent of the population owns a smart phone and are on at least one social media platform, there is only one logical solution—bring your business to the internet. Building out your social media channels is affordable and simple. It helps to create credibility for your brand and build trust with your customers. This method of marketing allows you to reach your clients—and a much broader audience— where they are: home, the park, on the job, virtually anywhere and anytime! If done strategically and creatively, social media can boost brand awareness, position you as a thought leader in your industry, generate sales and improve your ROI in the process. Now, which platform to choose? Where to begin? What to write? What image to use? To boost or not to boost? Here are some tips to help create and manage your business’ digital footprint: 1. While you should claim usernames on all of the major platforms—Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, to name a few, you can avoid frustration by only actively maintaining one or two. Once you are in the habit of updating, responding and remaining relevant, you can

44

MARCH 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

add in others if you like. Hint: Facebook and Instagram are a good place to start and can be linked together for cross posting. LinkedIn is beneficial to connect with other businesses in your industry and attract business clientele. 2. Remember that no one can like your page if they don’t know it exists. Suggest it to your family members, personal friends, employees and customers. Encourage them to share your page with their circles. Link your Facebook via a widget in your email signature and your website. Promote your page once it is completely built. When people engage with your content, check to see if they like your page. If they don’t, invite them! 3. Mix it up! Social media should be anything but boring. Aim to be authentic by sharing real content—images of your employees, jobsite progress, completed work, so people can see real-life examples. But, don’t always try to sell. In general, 50 percent or less of your posts should be self-promotion. The rest can be anything from news to inspiration to humor. Your social media channels provide a chance to show off your company’s personality. Who are you? 4. Remain consistent and embrace interactions of all kinds. Find a posting schedule that works for you and stick to it. At a minimum, three posts as week is recommended to foster meaningful engagement. Play around with the days and times you post to maximize results—hint, Wednesday evening delivers high engagement. Establish your brand

(including your voice) that helps you stand out from competitors. This includes responding to comments, messages and questions, even if they are negative. Make sure they feel heard and use the negative comments as an opportunity to rectify a misunderstanding or incorrect information. If you’re not getting the kind of engagement you want, ask for it! Create polls or include questions in your posts on trending topics. 5. Buy an ad. If you don’t have a huge marketing budget, social media ads can help get you the most bang for your buck if you manage your page smartly. Start with brand awareness campaigns and as your audience grows, change your goal to have calculable ROI such as click-through rates to read more information on your website. Be honest with yourself, though, if this isn’t your skill-set, hire this type of work out and avoid frustration, wasted budget and time. Social media marketing might feel like a big plunge, but when implemented properly, it can be successful. Start small, stick with it and remember the more quality content you post and the more you engage, the larger your following will grow. The bigger the buzz, the more qualified leads ready to make purchasing decisions.

Successful Manufacturer Opens Autism-Friendly Workplace Such is the case for Tony Lesenskyj and his son Colin. Lesenskyj is the president and CEO of LMT Mercer Group, a contract manufacturing company in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. It’s the largest manufacturer of vinyl fence, deck and railing accessories in the United States and Canada. Lesenskyj is also the father of Colin, who was diagnosed with autism several years ago. “There are two horrible days that happen in the life of a parent who has a disabled child. It’s when they are diagnosed, and then when you begin to wonder, what’s going to happen when I’m gone?” says Lesenskyj. In February of 2017, Lesenskyj opened We Make, the world’s first workplace centered around autistic employees’ specific needs and Founder Tony Lesenskyj and program director abilities. Located in Pennington, Moe Siddiqu New Jersey, the center provides a positive environment for productivity while accommodating the unique needs of its participants, all of whom have autism. “What we do at We Make is setting up our participants to have a full-time job,” says Lesenskyj. “As Colin went through the school system, we began to wonder what he would do as he aged out of that system. What was next?” While he had hoped Colin might work for him at the LMT Mercer warehouse, he realized that environment could be a dangerous setting. So, he brought a line of his products to the We Make building so Colin and his friends could assemble, package and ship the items. “We currently have 34 participants in our program,” explains executive director Muhammad (Moe) Siddiqu “Our progress is tied to their development, as they learn as much as they can, from general packaging, to project management, to working with Excel. Our end goal is that they can take what they learn at We Make to any other employer one day, or simply just to know they have a welcome place where they can be productive.” Participants are dropped off in the mornings and typically work on various tasks as they can and are picked up in the late afternoon. Parents know they are safe and in an environment suited to their abilities. Participants can join in their freshman year of high school with parental approval. The environment at We Make is unique, designed specifically to accommodate special needs. Those with autism can have significant anxiety, which can lead to disruptions in a typical day, but that’s no problem for those at We Make. “We don’t have bad days,” says Lesenskyj. Arcade games, a

basketball court, exercise equipment and a lounge are always available for participants to ease their anxiety and take a break. When they’re ready, they can return to work. Participants are encouraged to accomplish tasks and are taught how to handle disruptions in routine. Those who excel quickly are placed in team leadership roles and are given data entry or product line tasks that typically require greater levels of skill. In one case, a participant was having trouble opening a bag of brackets, one of the tasks assigned to him. One of the program directors purchased a variety of bags to see which worked best. The issue was quickly resolved and the participant felt a sense of accomplishment as he

Here at We Make, we’re constantly reevaluating our processes to help our participants succeed,” says Siddiqu. As he explains, a typical day encompasses a lot more than just work tasks. “The tangible jobs and activities range from prep work, such as sorting and collating, light manufacturing, assembly of products, e-commerce order fulfillment, inventory counts, etc. Socially, peer interactions are key and we have the leisure activities ready to go anytime someone needs to decompress,” he says. “If we’re working on a project for several days and we see it’s not going well, we can just change the process. have the ability to adapt our model to what aligns them with success.” Some of the participants will exit the program at a time that feels right for them, others may become permanent hires. “Most of our participants consider We Make a ‘home away from home’. We always encourage them to pursue their overall goals, and if they’re able to find another workplace suitable for them, we encourage them to continue to shine,” says Siddiqu. Lesenskyj is eager to expand We Make. “We want to replicate the model with other companies and share this successful venture in other areas to touch more lives.” To learn more, visit www.wemake.works or call Siddiqu at (609) 559-5096.

Preventive Maintenance Tips for your

MECHANICAL DRILL

Mechanical earth drills are compact, powerful and versatile. Knowing how to prevent, recognize and repair the most common problems will go a long way toward keeping a drill running smoothly.

GOOD TO KNOW

As the busy season for fence installation approaches, it’s an ideal time to start checking out your equipment, including your mechanical drill, and planning out maintenance schedules to follow to keep it working at top capacity throughout the rest of the year and beyond. With most tools and machines, regular maintenance and replacement of worn-out parts can be the key to restoring it back to maximum power. “Earth drills are no

MONITOR TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL Check the transmission oil level every 30 days or after 40 hours of operation, and inspect the transmission or gearbox immediately if it begins making unusual sounds or experiences extreme heat. Heat from the gearbox is normal, but higher temperatures or the smell of burnt oil are indicators of extreme heat. Unusual sounds and heat are the first problem indicators, and if ignored, the gearbox might start to lock up when in use. This is a symptom of low oil in the gearbox. Look for seepage or oil leaks along the top of the transmission, especially around the bottom seal at the output shaft. If these issues are present,

54

MARCH 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

exception,” says Mike Hale, sales and marketing manager with Little Beaver. “Knowing how to prevent, recognize and repair the most common problems will go a long way toward keeping a mechanical drill running efficiently.” He says a regular maintenance schedule will keep your drill “working as well as it did the first time you used it,” and offers the following guidelines:

check the fluid in the gearbox and change if necessary. Maintain the correct fluid levels by changing the transmission oil after every 40 to 50 hours of use. When adding oil, hold the transmission top level and remove the pipe plug. Squeeze oil into the transmission until oil just comes out of the hole. Then replace the pipe plug and tighten to 10 foot-pounds of torque. Always go by the recommended oil in the operator’s manual to ensure the drill operates to OEM specifications. Examine the Flexible Drive Shaft For models with a flexible drive shaft, examine every 50 hours of operation, inspecting the shaft housing to look for tears or breaks in the rubber

casing. Repairing with duct tape or shrink tubing can be effective for small tears but replace the housing if there are deep cuts or torn wire braids. On the core, check for broken wires and kinks, and replace the core if there are broken wires or sharp kinks so the shaft will function properly. Small kinks or twists shouldn’t cause any large concerns. When disassembling, cleaning and greasing the drive shaft, follow the manufacturer recommendations. Disassembly of the flexible drive shaft includes removing the kill switch and throttle wires, detaching the shaft from the transmission, disconnecting the complete

shaft assembly and removing the flexible shaft core and housing. After removing the flexible shaft core, wipe off the old grease with a cloth. Clean the inside of the flexible shaft housing by pulling a clean rag through with a long piece of wire. This might require several passes for removal of all grease. Then apply a light coat of manufacturer-recommended grease to the core and reassemble. Some manufacturers recommend white lithium grease — a lightweight, hightemperature tool grease. Lithium grease can withstand excessive heat without damaging the shaft. Some lithium combination greases can withstand 430 degrees Fahrenheit with frequent lube intervals. Operators should not use regular axle grease when lubricating, due to its risk of degrading in the high temperatures. Degraded lubricant runs to the lowest point in the flex shaft, increasing risk of burning the flex shaft. Be careful in choosing the right grease for the drill, and don’t over lubricate. Excessive grease can gum up in the flex shaft and burn, which causes excessive heat and reduces the shaft’s life. Not enough grease can dry out the cable, which will then break easily or generate enough heat to burn through the outer housing. INSPECT THE CLUTCH, THROTTLE CABLE AND THROTTLE BRACKET ASSEMBLY Check the clutch for wear every 30 days or when the flexible shaft is lubricated, if applicable to the operator’s drill. When the clutch requires maintenance, operators can’t always detect audible or visual signs, because the clutch continues to run even if no more clutch padding exists. A worn clutch causes a weaker performance when engaging the auger and when accelerating the engine from idle to full speed. padding is missing. Drills with a centrifugal clutch drive the auger as the engine speeds up to full throttle. Not only does the clutch ensure positive power transfer, it also protects the unit from shock while drilling. If the auger turns while the engine idles, first inspect the engine for proper idle speed and throttle linkage. The throttle regulates the power and speed of the engine. In some earth drills, the throttle lever is under the handlebar next to the transmission box. The throttle lever should pull smoothly without binding the throttle wire. Some manufacturers include a special throttle bracket assembly. Check that the throttle bracket is fully engaged before the lever bottoms out against the handlebar. In the idle position, the throttle bracket pulls the rivet clip tightly against the sliding clip, forcing the governor arm to idle. When fully engaged, the bracket clip slides over the rivet as the governor arm moves. If binding does occur, remove the clip and twist it slightly, then reinstall and check again. Some models do not use the sliding clip. With these, check that the moving arm on the bracket pulls away from the governor arm in the full throttle position. In the idle position it should push against the governor arm. Inspect the throttle cable and bracket assembly before each use or if the drill isn’t running smoothly. If the problem persists, check for stretched, discolored or broken clutch springs or broken clutch shoes and replace if needed. CHECK (AND REPLACE) BLADES Operators often allow the points and blades to wear beyond effectiveness. The drill can run perfectly and spin all day, but if the blades and points are worn, the unit will become less

Monitor blade sharpness and replace them when they become dull. Always having replacement parts on hand will make this a quick and easy fix and will keep downtime to a minimum.

and less effective. It’s important to monitor the blade sharpness and replace them when they become dull. If the auger needs new blades or points, discontinue use until they have been replaced. Always having replacement parts on hand will make this a quick and easy fix and will keep downtime to a minimum. KEEP AN EYE ON THE TORQUE TUBE Premium earth drills might feature torque tubes, which prevent unexpected kickback when the auger hits a rock or underground obstruction by absorbing the shock, keeping operators safe and the drill under control at all times. The tube itself does not require extensive maintenance, besides inspecting for cracks before each use. Pay attention to the spring and button attachment system. Ensure the button stays securely snapped into place before operation and replace the spring-button attachment if bent or broken. Spring-button attachment systems eliminate the chance of losing pins or bolts that some drills use for attachment purposes. “For most routine maintenance and inspections, operators can use ordinary hand tools like a wrench and screwdriver,” adds Hale. “Your operator’s manual is a great resource for specific instructions. We have those available online as well.” Beyond routine maintenance, he suggests working with a manufacturer that offers service or in-house technical consultations. Check with the drill’s manufacturer for the most accurate instruction on any service or repairs.
