Optimizing Productivity and Asset Utilization with Versatile Attachments

Excavator Drum Mulcher

For contractors operating midi excavators, Diamond Mowers recently introduced the new EX Drum Mulcher DC Pro X. Built for tackling mulching or brush clearing with power and precision, this efficient solution effectively cuts back and processes unwanted vegetation, making it effective for clearing fence lines and vegetation management, as well as utility and roadside maintenance.

Offered in two widths (30-inche and 50-inch) to accommodate excavator carriers from 4.5 to 10MT (metric tons), the EX Drum Mulcher comes equipped with a 63cc variable displacement hydraulic motor – larger than the industry standard – that provides impressive torque to power through material up to 8 inches in diameter quicker than competitive attachments. The motor is protected by a rugged chassis designed to help withstand crutching loads up to 10 metric tons. Severe-duty bearings, rated to 77,000 pounds and protected by a labyrinth design and triple steel ring seals, offer additional strength, while an abrasion-resistant AR 400 liner minimizes wear from debris. Oversized, serrated skid shoes hang off the sides of the attachment head to control, position, and manipulate downed material for more effective material processing.

“Featuring a larger hydraulic motor, better motor protection, and an optimized cut width relative to weight, this new attachment delivers more productivity per pass,” adds Stachel.

Further differentiating the EX Drum Mulcher in the marketplace is its optimized infeed system. The forward drum exposure allows for optimum tree engagement and feeds materials from left to right as it sweeps the ground for greater productivity per pass. Material is thoroughly processed in the chamber, producing an aesthetically desirable chip size without the need for reprocessing. Additionally, a bolt-on door on the attachment’s backside holds chips and controls thrown debris, making it a great choice for working near roads and in densely populated areas. The door can be easily removed for maximum production when the situation warrants.

Engineered for more than 2,000 hours of annual use, the EX Drum Mulcher DC Pro X comes standard with Twin Chisel® Planer Teeth but is compatible with any of three tooth options for different applications. Like all Diamond Mowers drum attachments, this new head is backed by an industry-leading two-year warranty.

For generations, fencing shops have used Vogel Tool & Die’s hand notcher to cope the ends of pipe for making gates and panels.

Vogel’s sales manager Larry Siegal says that at the recent FenceTech convention, some people were surprised to learn there are simple power options available for many of their tools.

He says Vogel offers a hydraulic press that is small enough to fit on a work bench, but is so versatile, many people consider it an economical alternative to an ironworker. When asked for details, Siegal described the press as less than two feet wide and said it simply plugs into the wall. “It has a standard three prong plug and needs 120V current on a dedicated 20 amp breaker. The press is activated by a foot switch, so the operator’s hands are free to quickly grab and position the next piece of material to be processed.”

And despite its small size, Siegal says the press generates up to 25 tons of power. “It really is a work horse!”

For the shops equipped with Vogel’s hand notcher, their existing tools can fit into the press’s turret-style turntable that accepts three different size notchers, eliminating changeover time and the risk of tool damage if the changeover isn’t performed correctly. “Customers are pleased when they find out an upgrade to power doesn’t require replacing their existing Vogel notching tools,” he says.

Siegal claims the real ‘secret’ is the versatility this press brings to a shop. “The turntable and notching dies are removed with one bolt and then many other Vogel tools can be installed.” An example would be Vogel’s angular notching tools, which give fencers the ability to make angled joints quickly and accurately for handrails or cross braces for large panels and gates.

“Another versatile feature will help businesses offering metal picket fences, for whom purchasing pickets, or complete panels is the norm. To avoid rising costs and supply chain issues, shops can press their own pickets and even pierce tubing or channel to fabricate the key components in house,” Siegal says. He says Vogel also offers a square tubing cutting die that fits their press to cut square tubing to length, prior to forming the picket. “We’ve learned that most customers who purchase our tools for ornamental panels do it out of frustration with delays in obtaining components,” adds Siegal.

Like many American manufacturers, Vogel is also subject to supply chain issues. “For the past several years, we have had waiting lists for our presses that have ranged from a few weeks, to occasionally as long as several months.” To accommodate surging demand, Siegal explains they now accept orders to reserve upcoming units, but delay processing payment until the equipment is completed and ready to ship.
