Important Benefits of Vertical Pivot Gates

SECURITY FENCING USING A BYPASS RAIL FENCING SYSTEM

Security fencing utilizing a bypass rail system is becoming increasingly popular with end users, as this type of system is typically very flexible and offers a great variety of fence infills. Infills range from expanded metal panels to welded wire panels and palisade fencing. According to Markus Erbeldinger, Ph.D., Product & Engineering Manager with AMICO Security, expanded metal infills are often used in high security fencing applications such as electrical substations and are described in an ASTM standard for High Security fencing (ASTM F2548-20). He explains that anti-climb and anti-cut properties of fence infills can be adjusted according to specific security needs, from thick gauge expanded metal infills with small diamond hole patterns to lighter gauge welded wire panels and pales for palisade fencing.

Whenever a bypass rail fencing system is considered, Erbeldinger says the number of rails and the type of rail attachment is important. Since rail systems of a bypass fence system are located in front of the posts and behind the fence panels, they provide a complete independence between panel sizes and post spacing. Therefore, the fence panels do not need to fit exactly in between posts which eliminates the labor-intensive process of field cutting fence panels to make them fit inconsistent posts. While comparable security fencing systems often specify tolerances of less than an 1/8” during post setting, bypass systems offer a much greater flexibility; in fact, spacing could be adjusted by one foot or more in instances where underground utility lines interfere with the desired post location. “Arguably,” adds Erbeldinger, “bypass rail fence systems could be seen as aesthetically more pleasing since posts are located behind the infill panels and won’t interrupt the optics of the fence line”

The Chameleon™ and Chameleon2™ Perimeter Systems offered by AMICO Security are good examples of bypass rail fence systems, compatible with round (Chameleon) and square (Chameleon2) posts. The Chameleon bypass rail fence system works with any expanded metal mesh style offered within the AMIGUARD® product lines. “AMICO is one of the largest expanded metal manufacturers in North America, and AMICO Security offers the greatest selection of expanded mesh panels in the fencing industry,” says Erbeldinger. “Panels can be varied to fit any security or architectural need.”

Chameleon is compatible with the AMIGUARD® 5000 series welded wire meshes and works well as a framework for a palisade fence. Chameleon is designed with the intent of minimizing labor required for installation; the rail system does not require any fasteners to connect rails to each other along the fence line by using a fastenerless friction fit splice system. Additionally, the brackets attach to the rail with a simple through-hole, allowing the rail to pass through securely without any additional fasteners.

The Chameleon bypass rail system saves about 40% of installation time as compared to other solutions, according to Erbeldinger. “The Chameleon bypass rail fence system increases the security level compared to chain-link fence alone, and it allows for a wide selection of security mesh options and finishes to be used.”

If you work with a commercial businesses or industrial facilities, you’re familiar with the wide range of gate access security options. The level of security needed is obviously a crucial factor, but safety should be considered as well. Vertical pivot gate systems are an excellent option that delivers heightened security while reducing the risk of injury. The team at Tilt-A-Way provided some key benefits of vertical pivot gates:

INCREASED SPEED

Vehicles can enter and exit a facility more quickly with a vertical gate. The pivot system doesn’t take as long to rise as a slide gate takes to open.

SAFETY

Vertical pivot gates have fewer opportunities for entrapment than most standard slide gates. Slide and swing gates have several moving parts that can pinch and injure pedestrians. A pivot system reduces the sheer number of moving parts. It lifts the gates out of the way, and there aren’t any potential entrapment spots.

STURDY CONSTRUCTION & LESS MAINTENANCE

Vertical pivot gates are quick and easy to install. Pivot gates move with bolts secured in concrete—they’re not going anywhere. The concrete support also makes them more resilient to impact.

WEATHER COMPATIBILITY

For areas that get heavy snowfall in the winter, big snowbanks can prevent swing or slide gates from working properly since they run parallel to the ground. With a vertical pivot gate, you don’t have that problem because it lifts up instead of sliding open.

EASIER MAINTENANCE

Fewer moving parts on vertical pivot gates means fewer spots to lubricate, clean, and check tension. It also means less wear-and tear, and therefore, decreased need for repair and/or replacement.

When choosing security solutions for a commercial facility, compare old-fashioned gate systems with a vertical pivot gate for quality, construction, and safety.
