PERIMETER SECURITY MARKET EXPECTED TO REACH OVER $185 MILLION BY 2028 The Perimeter Security Market size, currently estimated to be worth $124,860 million, is forecast to a readjusted size of $186,330 million by 2028 with a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 6.9% from 2022 to 2028, according to a new report, Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2022–2028, published in Valuates Reports under the “Industrial Materials & Equipment” category. The Perimeter Security market is segmented by type and application. TYPES INCLUDES: • Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems • Video Surveillance Systems • Access Control Systems • Alarms and Notifications Systems • Others

APPLICATIONS INCLUDE: • Commercial and Services • Industrial • Infrastructure • Government • Military and Defense • Resident • Educational • Religious Buildings

Major factors driving the growth of the Perimeter Security Market The expansion of the perimeter security market will be driven by a rise in perimeter invasions, theft incidents, burglary, cross-border terrorism, illegal immigration, and other intrusions. The perimeter security market is being driven by an increase in the development of smart cities and infrastructure. The government’s support for implementing various security systems at vital locations is growing, which will accelerate the implementation of perimeter security. 14

JULY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

Trends Influencing the Growth of the Perimeter Security Market There are several factors creating trends that will fuel the growth of the perimeter security market. The rising demand for video surveillance systems in industrial, infrastructure, residential, educational, and religious buildings, is one major factor. Installing video surveillance systems in the workplace can improve employee accountability while also increasing security and deterring theft. Every business owner wants their employees to work in a secure, pleasant, and productive environment. Installing surveillance cameras in the office is one technique to help with this. Surveillance cameras, when used appropriately, can curb theft and other negative events while also holding employees accountable for their work and conduct. Furthermore, modern AI-based video surveillance systems allow the user to search through all of the footage for a certain activity or object considerably faster than a human operator. When AI is used in forensic investigation, the amount of time it takes to extract useful data to examine issues is substantially reduced. Increasing incidents of fire and other hazardous situations are another factor that will contribute to the growth of the perimeter security market. Alarms and notifications systems are designed to alert building residents to leave in the case of a fire or other emergency and to report the occurrence to an off-premises location so that emergency services can be summoned. Modern military and government installations necessitate a high level of protection. This factor is expected to drive the growth of the perimeter security market. When it comes to the military, perimeter intrusion detection systems are used to protect international borders, military bases, prisons, and other sensitive places where intruders are a continual threat. Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS) detect intrusion attempts such as approaching, climbing, cutting, digging, or breaking through the perimeter barrier to provide early warning. Local and remote audio-visual alarms are used by the PIDS system to raise an alert. The use of detection

5 sensors improves the capacity to detect intruders and thwart an attack. At the very least, a single layer of PIDS technology should be installed to detect intruders at the perimeter. To safeguard a facility with higher security needs, a dual-layer solution is frequently required (i.e., potential theft or damage to higher-value assets). The perimeter layer can be reinforced by layering complementing technologies such as fence sensors and video analytics. The perimeter security market is predicted to also be affected by the rising demand for access control systems in commercial, industrial infrastructure, government military, and defense resident, and educational applications. Workstations, file rooms containing sensitive data, printers, and entry doors can all be restricted with access control systems. Exterior door access is normally controlled by a landlord or management agency in bigger buildings, whereas internal office door access is controlled by the tenant company. Biometric authentication is used in the most secure access control systems. Biometrics refers to the use of biometrics, such as fingerprints, hand geometry, vein pattern recognition, voiceprint recognition, and iris recognition to verify a person’s identity.

Perimeter Security Market Share Analysis Between 2018 and 2023, the residential, educational, and religious buildings sector is predicted to increase at the fastest rate. Security is becoming a key concern for individuals and residential complexes, such as private residential buildings, as the prevalence of theft and burglary rises around the world. As a result, the growing need for personal safety and security in the residential sector is propelling the growth of this market. In 2020, North America had the greatest market share. North America is credited with being the first to implement perimeter security systems for public safety. Furthermore, there has been a substantial success in adopting new technologies for perimeter security, particularly transmission to IP-based video monitoring.

IMPORTANT BENEFITS OF VERTICAL PIVOT GATES If you work with a commercial businesses or industrial facilities, you’re familiar with the wide range of gate access security options. The level of security needed is obviously a crucial factor, but safety should be considered as well. Vertical pivot gate systems are an excellent option that delivers heightened security while reducing the risk of injury. The team at Tilt-A-Way provided some key benefits of vertical pivot gates:

INCREASED SPEED

SECURITY FENCING USING A BYPASS RAIL FENCING SYSTEM Security fencing utilizing a bypass rail system is becoming increasingly popular with end users, as this type of system is typically very flexible and offers a great variety of fence infills. Infills range from expanded metal panels to welded wire panels and palisade fencing. According to Markus Erbeldinger, Ph.D., Product & Engineering Manager with AMICO Security, expanded metal infills are often used in high security fencing applications such as electrical substations and are described in an ASTM standard for High Security fencing (ASTM F2548-20). He explains that anti-climb and anti-cut properties of fence infills can be adjusted according to specific security needs, from thick gauge expanded metal infills with small diamond hole patterns to lighter gauge welded wire panels and pales for palisade fencing. Whenever a bypass rail fencing system is considered, Erbeldinger says the number of rails and the type of rail attachment is important. Since rail systems of a bypass fence system are located in front of the posts and behind the fence panels, they provide a complete independence between panel sizes and post spacing. Therefore, the fence panels do not need to fit exactly in between posts which eliminates the labor-intensive process of field cutting fence panels to make them fit inconsistent posts. While comparable security fencing systems often specify tolerances of less than an 1/8” during post setting, bypass systems offer a much greater flexibility; in fact, spacing could be adjusted by one foot or more in instances where underground utility lines interfere with the desired post location. “Arguably,” adds Erbeldinger, “bypass rail fence systems could be seen as aesthetically more pleasing since posts are located behind the infill panels and won’t interrupt the optics of the fence line” The Chameleon™ and Chameleon2™ Perimeter Systems offered by AMICO Security are good examples of bypass rail fence systems, compatible with round (Chameleon) and square (Chameleon2) posts. The Chameleon bypass rail fence system works with any expanded metal mesh style offered within the AMIGUARD® product lines. “AMICO is one of the largest expanded metal manufacturers in North America, and AMICO Security offers the greatest selection of expanded mesh panels in the fencing industry,” says Erbeldinger. “Panels can be varied to fit any security or architectural need.” Chameleon is compatible with the AMIGUARD® 5000 series welded wire meshes and works well as a framework for a palisade fence. Chameleon is designed with the intent of minimizing labor required for installation; the rail system does not require any fasteners to connect rails to each other along the fence line by using a fastenerless friction fit splice system. Additionally, the brackets attach to the rail with a simple through-hole, allowing the rail to pass through securely without any additional fasteners. The Chameleon bypass rail system saves about 40% of installation time as compared to other solutions, according to Erbeldinger. “The Chameleon bypass rail fence system increases the security level compared to chain-link fence alone, and it allows for a wide selection of security mesh options and finishes to be used.” Learn more about www.amiocosecurity.com. 20

JULY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

Vehicles can enter and exit a facility more quickly with a vertical gate. The pivot system doesn’t take as long to rise as a slide gate takes to open.

SAFETY

Vertical pivot gates have fewer opportunities for entrapment than most standard slide gates. Slide and swing gates have several moving parts that can pinch and injure pedestrians. A pivot system reduces the sheer number of moving parts. It lifts the gates out of the way, and there aren’t any potential entrapment spots.

STURDY CONSTRUCTION & LESS MAINTENANCE

Vertical pivot gates are quick and easy to install. Pivot gates move with bolts secured in concrete—they’re not going anywhere. The concrete support also makes them more resilient to impact.

WEATHER COMPATIBILITY

For areas that get heavy snowfall in the winter, big snowbanks can prevent swing or slide gates from working properly since they run parallel to the ground. With a vertical pivot gate, you don’t have that problem because it lifts up instead of sliding open.

EASIER MAINTENANCE

Fewer moving parts on vertical pivot gates means fewer spots to lubricate, clean, and check tension. It also means less wear-and tear, and therefore, decreased need for repair and/or replacement. When choosing security solutions for a commercial facility, compare old-fashioned gate systems with a vertical pivot gate for quality, construction, and safety. Learn more at www.tiltaway.com.

HOW STEEL FENCING HELPS PROTECT REMOTE PUBLIC WORKS PROJECTS

In recent years, high-security steel fences have become increasingly popular for protecting public works projects like reservoirs, pipelines, dams and more. Because these projects can be well off the beaten path, they need a strong perimeter barrier to deter trespassers. However, according to Michael Jones, Associate Director, Fencing Category at Fortress Building Products, their location can often present challenges that standard ornamental fences cannot meet.

For example, Jones says a reservoir may be surrounded by sloped or uneven ground, which can create sizeable gaps at the bottom of a fence for intruders to slide under. “An aggressive landscape also makes it more difficult to install and maintain the fence,” he adds. “Pressed to find a fencing solution for remote sites, many fencing professionals are looking to high-security steel fences that are rackable, corrosion-resistant and arrive as pre-assembled panels. These options reduce vulnerable points and ensure a long life while streamlining installation to meet the needs of isolated project sites.” Jones provides insight into the key security benefits of choosing this type of steel fencing for public works locations:

An anti-climb security fence is essential.

High-security steel fences will typically have vertical pales that integrate each panel component for a deterring visual. When these fences use an I-beam to join panels instead of a traditional square post, they can provide additional strength. However, strength alone does not make a fence impenetrable. Trespassers can still climb, so it is vital that these fences incorporate pales with a wide “w” shape for an anti-climb design. When the pales curve outward and are tightly spaced, they can work with a C-shaped horizontal rail to make these fences nearly impossible to climb.

Rackable design also increases security.

Sloped or uneven terrain can create gaps at the bottom of a traditional welded steel fence. In these instances, the investment in an anti-climb security fence would be for naught because an intruder could easily slide underneath. High-security fences with a rackable design can follow gradation changes without the bottom gap, enhancing its ability to keep a well-defined and tight perimeter. Select rackable high-security steel fencing can adjust up to 12 inches per pre-assembled panel so both the top and bottom can deny any prospective trespasser. By recommending these fences for remote projects, fencing installers can help meet the unique needs of their customers.

Pre-assembled panels speed up installation.

High-security fences used in isolated areas should be more than safe and secure—they should also be quick and easy to install. Not only does this mean fewer days without a fence, but it also means less hours needed to get crews out to the site and build the fence, which can translate to a lower bottom line. In addition to fast installation, pre-assembled panels also offer product consistency. Rather than inspecting every single pale to be certain of its quality, a fencing contractor can rest assured the whole assembly will meet their customer’s specific security needs. 22

JULY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

Durable, maintenance-free coating extends life.

High-security steel fences can have a longer service life when built from pre-galvanized material that has been finished with an advanced powder coating. These layers of protection can help the entire fencing system resist corrosion from long-term exposure to the elements. By anticipating the service needs of an isolated project, fencing professionals can help ensure customer satisfaction well beyond installation.

Strong fences are just the beginning.

For public works in remote locations, Jones stresses that high-security steel fences should have more than just strength. “Pre-assembled, rackable fence panels with anti-climb features create a more robust, longer-lasting first line of defense against intruders. When finished with a weather-resistant dual coating, these fences last year after year with virtually no maintenance, making them an ideal solution for places that cannot be monitored regularly.” By considering the unique challenges of isolated public works, Jones says professionals can help customers choose a fence that meets all their needs, even the ones they may not be aware of themselves. SECURING CALGARY’S LARGEST WASTEWATER TREATMENT FACILITY

When you think of sites that might need high security fencing, wastewater treatment plants might not be the first thing that spring to mind. However, these facilities are some of the most critical infrastructures in any modern city. Without clean water, health would suffer, our quality of life would plummet, and cities would quickly become unlivable. So, it just makes sense that when the City of Calgary decided to upgrade their largest wastewater treatment facility, they put security near the top of the list. THE PROBLEM WITH BONNYBROOK WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT Bonnybrook Wastewater treatment facility was first built in the 1930s, but the city of Calgary has grown a lot since then. Over the years, a patchwork of upgrades and maintenance had been done, but the facility was still showing its age. The city proposed and approved an ambitious billion-dollar upgrade program that would allow the plant to serve nearly 500,000 more people and accommodate city expansion up to at least 2030. However, as you can imagine with any large infrastructure project, this meant making a lot of changes, and installing and constructing a lot more complex water treatment equipment. Safety and security were a concern, and existing perimeter solutions just weren’t working. A MODERN HIGH SECURITY FENCE SOLUTION After consulting with engineers, architects and security specialists, the City of Calgary decided to use the Omega Max fence system to protect the plant during expansion. The Omega Max fence system is based on the well-known 358 welded mesh fence panel, installed on square posts with tamper resistant fittings. Like other 358 mesh fence systems, this Canadian sourced product is anti-climb and hard to cut with any standard hand tools. The duplex coating system which includes galvanized wire and powder coating also makes it very corrosion resistant and long lasting. EXTENSIVE FENCE LINE Once the product for the Bonnybrook fence was chosen, there was still the challenge of installing it along the perimeter. Planning and executing the installation of about 2,000 linear feet of 8-foot-high fence with a barbed wire overhang on an active industrial construction site is hard enough. When you are working with a rigid fence system that is unforgiving of any gradient anomalies, it becomes even more challenging. However, after successfully bidding the project, Rite-Way Fencing assigned their best industrial fence installation specialists, and tackled the project in carefully planned stages, coordinating with the project management team and other trades on site.

24

JULY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

Towards the end of the project, the Rite-Way team also procured and installed custom Omega Max gates to match the high security fence installed on the site, including an 18-foot-wide double swing gate and a 30-foot-wide single cantilever. SAFE AND SECURE BY PLANNING AHEAD There has never been an extremely high need for high security fence systems in Canadian cities like Calgary, but that is changing. Instead of opting for a lower security fence that might not have been up to the task of securing critical infrastructure like the Bonnybrook Water Treatment Facility, the City of Calgary planned ahead, and chose a fence that will be future-proof. While the upfront investment in high security fence systems like this might be higher, it cuts costs in the long run. Which is why Rite-Way Fencing always recommends industrial customers choose the highest security fence system they can afford. Because security is always a good investment. PERIMETER SECURITY: Don’t overlook the fundamentals

The Ethiopian proverb, “fish discover water last,” is a reminder that the most important truths are sometimes so obvious we risk overlooking them. Of course, being oblivious to them doesn’t make them any less important. With that in mind, here are three fundamentals about perimeter security that are often overlooked.

FUNDAMENTAL 1:

INTEGRATE EARLY

At the most basic level, perimeter security starts with a fence and a vehicle gate. But of course, these two critical pieces of security infrastructure are part of a holistically built environment. Increasingly, customers are turning to products that not only provide optimal security, but also offer integration into the overall site and security plan. The first fundamental, therefore, is to ensure that your perimeter security needs are integrated early in the design stage. This ensures that the broadest space of solutions is evaluated. The key with any solution is a balanced offering, meeting the security needs of the customer while considering budget constraints, specification standards, and delivering a product that is aesthetically pleasing. As an example, Kevin Frain, Project Director at Wallace Perimeter Security, said the FAA tower at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas utilized their bi-folding gate system to harden the perimeter in a critical airport facility. “This facility is also public facing, so aesthetics were important. The bi-folding gate integrates seamlessly with the perimeter fence line and is sequenced with crash-rated products for the highest level of protection.” The smaller operational footprint of the bi-folding gate also allows for multiple side-by-side lane configurations, something that can be difficult to accomplish with typical slide gates.

26

JULY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

FUNDAMENTAL 2:

SECURITY NEEDS SHOULD DRIVE BUDGET Another obvious truth that often gets lost is when the investment in gates and fences are compromised to address budget overruns. Of course, different projects require different levels of protection and use and balancing these parameters is an important consideration. For example, if the site doesn’t have space limitations, a cantilever gate system might be a good solution to fit the application. While a lower cost, it still provides a high level of security. Wallace Perimeter Security’s Alpha gate will span up to 80’ clear openings without impeding the road surface solving the problem of traditional gates which require additional components to be installed into the roadway. Roadway disruption can, depending on the use case, increase security risk.

FUNDAMENTAL 3:

BE ALERT TO INNOVATION As obvious as this might sound, most installations gravitate to the familiar, and while the tried-andtrue is often the right choice, a not-insignificant percentage of installations demand innovative thinking. In recent years, high-security fences have evolved, and security, budget and appeal have become increasingly more important. “Welded wire is the next evolution of security fencing,” says

Frain. “It offers solutions for all perimeter security applications, from light commercial to the most secure critical infrastructure, and everywhere in between.” And innovation is not limited to product design and materials choice. “We try to extend the way we think about innovation to how we serve our customers” says Frain. “For example, we recently introduced quick-hang post caps which cuts installation time by, in some cases, 20%. We also work continually to improve our delivery and installation instructions to ensure they are clear and easy to follow. And we’ve also put significant resources into our ability to send quotes within 24 hours and site-specific drawings within 48 hours. Innovation to us means finding ways to save time for our customers over the entire design and build window – from the very first inquiry all the way thru to the first cycle of the gate.” The three fundamentals of perimeter security are like water to a fish, so don’t overlook them. Consider security needs early in the design process, don’t let budget trump security and work with innovative partners. BOLLARDS OFFER ENHANCED PERIMETER SECURITY

There has been a growing shift in the importance of security, not just inside commercial spaces but outside as well. Both public and private facilities are seeking more secure ways to protect their property and people from accidents as well as planned attacks, whether by intentional vehicle ramming or those including vehicle borne explosives. Retractable bollards provide an added level of safety and security for buildings, infrastructure, and pedestrians. When used as access-control measures, retractable bollards allow pedestrian traffic to move through, while permitting vehicle access-control and are strategically placed to control, direct and/or obstruct vehicular traffic on impact. Bollards can be permanent, removable, or retractable, to be deployed when needed. Nasatka Security, a world leader in versatile security solutions, supplies crash rated bollards including DOS and ASTM certified ratings amongst custom engineered solutions that are built to last. Nasatka Security architectural bollard designs bring environmental and aesthetic enhancements to any site, securing perimeter and access-control points without providing a sense of social disorder and active alarm measures. Nasatka bollard solutions stop unwarranted vehicle access and enable bi-directional stopping power. These bollards provide perimeter security access either as a stand-alone system or integrated with advanced access control technologies. According to the company, they are the first barrier manufacturer to offer two unique types of automated-hydraulic barrier systems and include hot-dip galvanization steel as a standard feature, which extends the durability of the bollard system. Nasatka’s bollard solutions include: Automated Hydraulic Bollards: Traditionally a three-bollard system is required to secure an access width of 12 – 16 feet. The security professionals at Nasatka are equipped to provide versatile configurations to suit any access-control plan. Properly maintained, these hydraulic bollards may be continuously operated for maximum access control conditions requiring deployment of the system after each vehicle’s entry or exit.

28

JULY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

Manual Retractable Bollards: Nasatka can provide operating systems based on the customers’ needs beyond that of the standard hydraulic operablebased system. The manual bollard overall structural design is the same as the automated version. Removable Bollards: This system restricts vehicle access as threat levels require, permitting security for occasional and emergency access. Removable bollards require less foundation depth and various methods of removal are available. Permanent Bollards: This option provides fixed perimeter protection when vehicle access is not a requirement. These are often installed as part of a complete system integrated with hydraulic or manual vehicle access control barrier systems. Featuring modern design in security planters, decorative benches, and more, these bollard options provide aesthetic solutions for crash-rated perimeter protection. Custom Bollards: Custom rate and non-rated bollards are available in various external covers, including plastic coverings, powder coat colors, decorative aluminum casts, and machined or polished stainless steel. The security professionals at Nasatka Security recommend bollards be considered wherever perimeter security and safe environments are priority.

Typical bollard applications include, but are not limited to: • • • • • • •

Government agencies Military bases and barracks Law enforcement facilities Commercial office buildings Parking facilities Financial institutions Airports

• • • • • •

Ports Hospitals Power Plants Correctional facilities Sport stadiums Pedestrian areas

CHAIN LINK FENCE INDUSTRY SUPPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE BILL

Cost-Effective Fencing Security Systems Available

As the U.S. government seeks to increase infrastructure upgrading and innovation with over $100 million in annual spending, the chain link industry offers a wide range of costeffective, high-security anti-intrusion, perimeter security systems to support any level of the infrastructure project. Additionally, the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute offers several tools to assist infrastructure professionals and agencies to determine and design the most appropriate and cost-effective systems to meet their needs. These tools include technical guides for installation and security, as well as technical support from chain link industry experts. For infrastructure projects, today’s chain link offers some of the best options for enhancing pedestrian safety and visibility; reducing vehicular accidents and damage; deterring animal access to highways, roads, and bridges; and maximizing project budgets. Chain link has an unbroken record of being the most costeffective perimeter protection product capable of meeting ASTM/industry needs at every level of perimeter physical security. And, perhaps, most importantly, chain link’s higher tensile strength, anti-corrosive properties and specialized coatings create huge savings in repair and replacement costs – funds that can be used for other high-priority project needs. In addition to its cost-effectiveness, chain link provides unsurpassed safety features through increased pedestrian safety and visibility and also the reduction of vehicular accidents and damage. According to the Federal Highway Administration, each year, 1 – 2 million animal-related vehicle accidents cause an estimated $8 billion in damages and 200 human fatalities. Chain link’s flexibility and see-through properties make it the go-to system for reducing animal intrusions and accidents on roads and bridges. As communities across the country prepare for major infrastructure projects, chain link systems maximize project budgets and help solve the challenges safety and security contracts face to harden perimeters on roads, bridges, military bases, airports, and other infrastructure projects. SECURING SPORTS VENUES IS THE NAME OF THE GAME While enjoying a sports game at a stadium, some people may briefly notice security fencing and then not give it much thought. Instead, they focus on the fun and excitement of the game, as they should. Unfortunately, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) released a brief in June 2020 reporting 893 terrorist attacks and plots were made between 1994 and 2020. Stadium and facility owners have made major improvements to security and are continually upgrading facilities to ensure the safety of the fans and players. Nick Gardner, business development specialist for Ameristar Perimeter Security, works primarily with owners and facility managers of sports venues across the United States. “I go into every new project knowing that it will be its own unique design of products. No two stadiums are exactly alike,” he says. Some of the key safety measures include protecting against vehicle threats by adding security fencing incorporated with a passive cable barrier system; protection of pedestrians while limiting vehicle access with a tested bollard or bollard system; pedestrian access gates or crash rated vehicle barrier arms for traffic control, as well as other types of perimeter and interior security fence for crowd control and authorized access. Many venues seek to obtain a SAFETY Act certification. This provides legal liability protections for providers of Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technologies, whether they are products or services. Those in the

private sector can apply for the certification through the Department of Homeland Security to determine if their offering qualifies. An entertainment venue that is seeking to get a SAFTEY Act certification will work to incorporate certified products into their perimeter security. Ameristar Perimeter Security has many perimeter security products including Impasse II designed and released in 2002 for high security applications. “This system focuses on deterring and defending,” Gardner explains. Another option, the Stalwart Passive Cable Barrier system, can be integrated with various fence facades, including but not limited to, ornamental iron, chain link and welded wire designs. “SAFETY Act certified barrier and bollard products are also great options for protecting these large venues,” he says. “At Ameristar, we have had the honor of not only manufacturing and supplying perimeter security products on many stadiums and entertainment venues, including Allegiant Stadium and the Hollywood Bowl, but collaborating closely with owners, architects, engineers, and contractors to understand the site, project requirements, and the products to meet their safety needs,” Gardner says. Jessica Burton PRESIDENT POLY VINYL CREATIONS

After working in various roles within the family-owned company, Jessica Burton became president of Poly Vinyl Creations in 2018. Her parents were one of the pioneers in the industry, offering vinyl fence with their original company, Burton Fence in the early 1980s. In 1996, Poly Vinyl Creations was formed to offer the ability of custom fabrication to end users through working with licensed trade contractors. Today, Jessica continues her family’s legacy with a vision of growth through customization, customer service and offering exceptional products and services. She has completed the process and is a certified Women’s Business Enterprise through the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council. Read on to learn a valuable lesson Jessica discovered at one of her earliest meetings. WHAT TYPE OF BUSINESS IS POLY VINYL CREATIONS? It’s a pioneer in the specialty outdoor products market, serving its distribution network of trade contractors and supply houses with vinyl, aluminum and other specialty outdoor products which includes fence, deck, railing, and garden products. Based mainly in the southeast with four stocking and manufacturing locations, we ship nationwide as well as export products. Our values are: People first. Offer the solution. Leave no stone unturned. Yearn for growth. WHEN DID YOU BECOME PRESIDENT? I’ve been president since my father retired in August 2018. I became the majority shareholder when my mother passed away in April 2017. Prior to that, I had worked in various positions since June 2001 when I graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing with a minor in journalism. I am a second-generation owner and owe my knowledge and diligence to my parents who raised me that to be successful, you need to commit to doing the right thing, making things happen, honoring your word and learning about the industries you serve and the products. WHAT DO YOU HANDLE IN YOUR POSITION? A little bit of everything! My favorite thing is training staff, especially when I get the opportunity to see the light bulbs go on. Due to my background with marketing, accounting, and technology, I enjoy being involved in those aspects of the business specifically. However, I was raised to be extremely hands on, as my parents were, and I can work in the warehouse, assist with machine maintenance, inventory, special projects, assist customer service and sales as well as accounting. I even make sure my forklift skills do not get rusty! I enjoy developing leadership staff within my organization and am excited when I see people start to spread their wings and develop their leadership skills.

SINCE THIS ISSUE OF FENCE NEWS HIGHLIGHTS WOMEN IN THE FENCING INDUSTRY, WE WANTED TO GET YOUR INPUT ON HOW WOMEN OPERATE WITHIN THIS INDUSTRY. DO YOU FEEL WOMEN APPROACH BUSINESS IN THE SAME WAY AS MEN? I feel women view things with more gray area than men do and analyze situations and events in more depth, often looking at multiple viewpoints before making any final decision on a situation. Women also tend to focus more on employee wellness benefits; you often see more women involved in the human resources and benefits side of business. I attribute this to culture and societal norms and expectations, but it allows for a different approach to business. I also feel women are expected to be more empathetic and balance their personal and business lives to a higher degree which affects their approach to business. How women handle employees, work with vendors and customers as well as how they are viewed by employees, customers and vendors alike are different than with their male counterparts, especially in male dominated industries. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A WOMAN WHO IS STARTING HER CAREER? Watch the guilt factor. As women, we are still expected to maintain home and family. However, for those of us that are career oriented, we sometimes feel as if we cannot have both or that a choice must be made between one or the other. Focus on balance more than anything and don’t beat yourself up when one must take more precedence over the other. Long term, life will balance itself and we need to allow that to occur naturally. WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO BECOME A WOMEN MINORITY OWNED SUPPLIER MANUFACTURER? Ironically, a male contractor asked me about it a long time ago because it would help him in his bid if we were certified. I thought it was very interesting and started my research. I eventually found the program and went through a nine-month process of submissions and interviews to become certified. Recently, I brought two members of my leadership team to the national Women’s Business Enterprise National Council conference to expand their horizons. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU HAD KNOWN WHEN YOU WERE STARTING YOUR CAREER? In one of my first meetings, I realized I needed to learn the language of my industry and how to adapt to customers. My father was with me in the meeting with a contractor, and I chimed in with my fresh-out-of-college knowledge and the contractor, a kind older gentleman, said, “Girl, I am not sure what you’re talking about.” It was a humbling experience. As a young adult, we often feel the world is at our fingertips and we know a lot more than we do. Luckily, I learned this lesson quickly. There is a difference between book knowledge and industry knowledge.

WOMEN IN THE FENCING INDUSTRY Pursuing Endless Possibilities SHELBY KELLAND

Product Quality Manager, LiftMaster

She fell hard and she fell fast – hook, line and sinker. Since the day almost nine years ago, at the impressionable age of 20, she started work at LiftMaster, Shelby Kelland has never stopped feeling the love for her job, which has now become her career. Kelland quickly moved from technical support to training, a role that suits her personality perfectly. She is currently the product quality manager in the field operations department for gate operators. “This just means I help investigate potential product quality issues across the product line throughout North America. My department owns the voice of customer with our company, tying the connection between the customer to marketing, engineering, new product development, sales, tech support and more, and also pushing for changes with the product when applicable.” Kelland says she knew coming into the industry the possibilities would be endless if she worked hard, observed, and networked. “That’s exactly what I did and it hasn’t steered me wrong, and I’d recommend this to anyone entering this industry, more so for a female – dive into the subject matter, speak to it intelligently and carry yourself well. Everything else will fall into place. In the words of Stephen King, ‘Everything’s Eventual.” As the result of following her own guidelines, along with the best advice she every received, which is, “Make sure you know your sh*t, kid,” Kelland is now a product expert, an electrical expert, an industry safety expert, and an industry trainer. She also has three industry certifications. 50

JULY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

Along the way, she has found that being a young female in a maledominated industry gives you a tough time with first impressions. “If I had a penny for every time I ‘reminded someone of their granddaughter.’ However, I’ve found that if you carry yourself well and can speak intelligently about the subject matter, you’ll succeed. At times I’ve had to ask for 10 minutes, ‘Give me 10 minutes and I won’t disappoint.’ I haven’t disappointed yet.” Kelland also advises women in the industry to get out there and interact with all of the different aspects and positions within the industry. “This helps me with my day job, but it mostly provides a network, perspective and comradery you can’t get elsewhere. And that is priceless.” Kelland is proud to be an industry trainer for two different associations, the American Fence Association (AFA) and the North American Fence Contractors Association (NAFCA), of which she is also an executive board member. “I’m excited to see what unknowns the future holds for me, my company and the industry,” says Kelland. “I am blessed to have built my career with an incredible organization I have full trust in. I know only great things are to come.” Kelland says the accomplishment she is most proud of has nothing to do with her career, it’s her two amazing daughters, ages 4 and 6. “They keep me on my toes. I’m also a hobby baker who makes custom sugar cookies. We live in Tucson, Arizona, and are avid hikers who love everything nature has to offer, such as camping, fishing and exploring. My two worlds – work and home – keep me busy, but I enjoy the challenge and for what it’s worth, I think I balance it with grace.”

Confidence Without Arrogance is Key KERRY MCGUIGAN

Vice president of finance, Zekelman Industries For Kerry McGuigan, vice president of finance with Zekelman Industries, being part of an industry that provides tangible goods is in her heritage. Her grandfather was the key engineer in developing a continuous casting process for non-ferrous metals in the 50s and 60s, her father built continuous casting furnaces and then started his own original equipment manufacturing business, building his own machines and casting metal. Members of her family have worked for the business at various points. “My father worked for my grandfather’s business so manufacturing and the metals industry is in my blood,” McGuigan explains. Her current position involves overseeing the accounting and forecasting function of the businesses, which include Wheatland Tube, Western Tube, Picoma Industries, and Sharon Tube brands of products. Their products include fence tubing and framework products, mechanical tubing, standard pipe, sprinkler pipe, electrical conduit, electrical fittings, cold drawn over mandrel products all sold to multiple industries across North America. McGuigan is responsible for the normal accounting and budgeting processes along with margin and cost analysis, as well as input, analysis, and guidance on strategic project initiatives and growth opportunities. McGuigan has been with Zekelman and Wheatland Tube since 1998, starting as a college intern and progressing her way through various finance and business roles. She was named vice president in 2018. “I enjoy being a partner with the commercial and operations teams. At Zekelman, we are a big group of teammates all striving towards the same goals, which are to provide our customers with outstanding service and a superior quality product,” she explains. “I’m able to not only interact with our internal teammates, but also with our customers, suppliers, and equipment manufacturers. This broad-spectrum interaction has provided me with a wealth of knowledge about our products, how they are made, and how they are used, allowing me to offer insightful information to our sales teams or plant management when evaluating a new opportunity.” At numerous times, she is the only woman in a meeting or on a site visit, but she’s not found that to be a hinderance. “I feel that in any job in any industry, confidence without arrogance is key. If you are confident in what you know and more importantly, what you do not know, this will come across and your opinions will be valued,” McGuigan explains. “At no point should anyone feel intimidated to ask a question or offer an educated opinion. I have had the pleasure of working with and for tremendous people over the years, and all have been willing to listen to others and not discount or discredit someone’s comments based on what’s on the surface.” Barry Zekelman, owner and CEO, is passionate about what the company does and that passion is contagious throughout the work force, she explains. “Having a positive attitude and striving to be better because you care will make for a great workplace.” When Wheatland acquired Western Tube in 2017, McGuigan gained more exposure to the fence industry. She has met with some of the fence customers and spent time touring their businesses to understand what they are looking for in a partnership. “Every time I have the opportunity to visit our customers, I jump at it, because I learn something from everyone I meet and it certainly helps me understand their needs and how we can strive to exceed them.” Her motivation comes from the passion and enjoyment she gets not only in working for a great company, but in an industry that provides tangible goods. Her family background was a great foundation for her position today. “The advice I would offer anyone starting their career would be to listen and learn as much as you can, even if it’s not an area directly related to your work tasks,” McGuigan says. “The more knowledge you have, the better you will be at anything you put your mind to. Although my job title and background are in finance, I truly feel that I am a partner to the entire business and that breadth of exposure across our company continues to add value every day.” 52

Show up and Get the Job Done DEB ROCHE

Owner, D Roche Fencing Deb Roche was working at a local newspaper as a receptionist and proofreader before she and her husband, Don, started D. Roche Fencing in 1980. “We both wanted to be self-employed and work outside. Fencing was a good fit, and the start-up costs were minimal at the time.” Deb has been involved in all aspects of the business from the beginning. She and Don share owner/operator responsibilities equally. They started out doing agriculture fencing and over the years have also diversified into commercial and residential. The company faced some challenging early years. “I’m really proud we made it through the first 10 years. Those were tough times to be in the ag fence market, with interest at 18% and farmland values and commodities crashing. But we made it though and learned some valuable lessons.” When it comes to balancing work and family life, Deb says it all blends together for them, and that has never been a problem. “We’ve always made sure to set aside time for family events, church and other social activities, and as we get older, that is becoming a bigger priority.” As a business owner partner in the fence industry with her husband, Deb says she has not ever really experienced gender discrimination. “Don and I just showed up to install a fence and no questions were ever asked. Being a woman never became an issue.” She feels the qualities that have helped her be successful hold true across gender lines. “Be honest, work hard, be respectful and do quality work.” In addition, Deb shares the best advice we ever received “Bob Gotee, a past president of the American Fence Association, was speaking at an event we attended, and he said, ‘I never made any money until I got out of debt,’ and that really stuck with us as we worked to grow our business.” Deb feels very positive about the future of D Roche Fencing and the industry overall. “Don and I are both grateful to keep doing what we love – going out and getting the job done. We hope to continue to do so for many more years. I’m also excited to see so many young fence owners in our Northeast Kansas area. We know running and growing a fence business takes a lot of work and it’s great they are willing to make the sacrifice.”

Every Experience Prepares You for What’s Next DEB HILMERSON CEO, Hilmerson Safety

Anyone who knew Deb Hilmerson as she was growing up in Little Falls, Minnesota, would likely not be surprised by her career path. Her father owned a salvage yard where she learned how to get her hands dirty at an early age. “I loved being with my dad and at an early age, I was removing car parts, crushing cars, driving front-end loaders and more.” As captain of the University of Minnesota women’s basketball team, Hilmerson cultivated strong leadership and team-building skills that gave her the fortitude to challenge construction norms later in life. Her career began as a union construction worker and later included roles as a safety director and consultant working at large companies across the country. Very few safety consultants have field experience in the trenches, but Hilmerson did. “As a safety inspector questioning practices and equipment that had not prevented accidents, I grew weary of repeatedly hearing, ‘This is how we do it.’ I decided that was not good enough and I knew I could do better; our industry could do better.” In 2001, she took her experience and knowledge base, combined with a drive to do things differently, and started Hilmerson Safety. Since that time, she has developed six patented construction safety products used on some of the largest construction sites in the U.S. Hilmerson’s reusable products impact the environment and workers’ lives in positive ways while controlling labor and construction costs. Hilmerson says working in construction was challenging at first because there were very few women. “I had to prove myself and let them know I didn’t want to wear the pink hard hat and hold the stop sign. I wanted to be physically involved and do exactly what the guys did, without special treatment. Once I proved I could hold my own, most of the guys onsite became my friends and brothers. My gender has never stopped me from 54

JULY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

moving forward in my career.” Even today, Hilmerson says there are still a relatively small number of women working in trades, particularly in senior leadership positions. “I am seeing more construction companies employing women, and I love it, but we’re still not even close to being where we should be. There’s great opportunity in the trades and a wide variety of positions available. Don’t let fear or anything else hold you back. Educate yourself and find a mentor. Many of the women who have been in the field are more than happy to help someone younger navigate and find their way in this industry. LinkedIn and other social media platforms are great places to start. And of course, my advice to anyone starting a career would be work harder, work smarter, show up early, prove yourself, be willing to listen and to learn, ask questions and participate.” Hilmerson has much to be proud of; her company has been fortunate to participate in multiple iconic projects. “There are times you forgot how far you’ve come and I think it’s important to stop and recognize that. As a student athlete at the University of Minnesota back in the 1980s, I vividly recall cutting through the Engineering School to get to basketball practice. I’d see all those really smart people, and think I wasn’t smart enough to be in those classrooms. Today, I own a company that designs, engineers and sells construction safety products. When I returned to campus not long ago, it felt surreal to see products I created, with my name and logo on them, in use on two big projects, including an extensive renovation at the College of Science and Engineering. Talk about a full-circle moment!” She adds, “I believe everything we experience prepares us for what’s next. You build a life just as you might construct a building. So, pay attention to whatever is going on in your life right now. It’s happening for a reason.”

Creating a Positive Work Environment Listening is Key to Effective Management

Tom Luby, Business Consultant and Fence Industry Spokesperson

THE LAST FEW YEARS HAVE SEEN UNPRECEDENTED CHANGES IN LABOR MANAGEMENT RELATIONSHIPS, WITH MANY OF MY CLIENTS IN THE FENCE INDUSTRY CLAIMING WORKERS ARE GETTING MORE DEMANDING. IN SOME INSTANCES, IT ALMOST APPEARS AS IF THERE IS A ROLE REVERSAL, AND THE WORKERS ARE CALLING THE SHOTS. Unfortunately, this is like the tail wagging the dog and it will not work. However, this situation also underscores the need for flexibility in the workplace for the company to survive and for everyone to improve their life status. Every company needs open channels of communication and there must be a clear understanding of everyone’s role in the workplace. The decision of an employee to express their opinion on work-related subjects, policies, or procedures, especially when that opinion is contrary to senior management, has long been considered a risky one. But, as Bob Dylan aptly put it, “The times, they are a’ changing.” A good manager should not summarily reject any opinion, right or wrong, on any subject. Instead, they should encourage an open exchange of ideas and philosophies. After listening, and if management disagrees, the manager should explain why the company holds to certain policies and procedures and hopefully, a common consensus can be reached. Sometimes, the manager will underscore his or her rationale and prevail, and other times, they may see the point of view of the employee and change the policy or procedure in question. Direct laborers are the lifeblood of the fence 58

JULY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

industry. We cannot survive without them. Management must be creative to keep the best workers. Listening to employees’ concerns and responding accordingly is a key component to that equation. Likewise, employees should not just accept controversial policies and/or procedures; instead, they should understand why a certain position is held by management and must accept the decision. If they cannot accept it, they can either try to change the opinion of management or move on to find other employment. Employees should not work under an oppressive veil or uncomfortable circumstances. Once an employee understands and accepts the views of management, they are happier and more content at their job. If an employee does not believe in the work, they will not do a good job nor be happy or content on the job, and their negativity will spread to others in the company, and possibly to customers. That’s why it’s imperative to address discontent as soon as possible, allow the employee to share his or her viewpoint, listen and then decide if policies should change, or if not, explain the reasoning to the employee to achieve a resolution. Once a healthy rapport has been established

in your company and a mechanism is in place for creating understanding and trust, the next order of business is that managers must realize that there is a definite relationship between authority, responsibility, and accountability. Without an understanding of this relationship, clear lines of communication become an improbability. I will delve into more detail about the importance of a clearly defined chain of command, duties, authorities, and responsibilities in a future article, but for now, managers will do themselves a favor to improve their listening skills. Responding to valuable employees creates a culture of success and a positive work environment.

Start-Up Stories e Mills Fency Compan

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the everpresent worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.

ers, n w o o c ce Mills Fen nd Ken Mills. ea l t t y L n h o J

“You have to be tough and not let the little stuff get to you.”

Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.

The family that fences together – the Mills, from left to right: Kyle Reynolds, Catherine Mills Reynolds, John Lyttle, Ken Mills, Patti Mills, Ashley Smith Mills

JULY 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

Owning his own business was something Ken Mills had dreamed about since he was 15 years old. After dabbling in flipping houses and fencing, he decided he liked fencing a lot better. That decision in 1970 marked the beginning of Mills Fence Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. When he first started, Ken kept his full-time job at General Motors (GM), working the night shift for four years. By day, he was a part-time entrepreneur, building fences and his business, and occasionally sleeping. On Saturdays, he’d try to get in 12 hours of fencing work. “It wasn’t easy, but I was determined to succeed,” says Ken. He did succeed, and after four years, was able to leave GM and devote all his work hours to growing his own business. With a family to support, he was very disciplined about his finances. “I paid for material, per job, until I had enough business to purchase material in more cost-effective truck loads.” Growth was important to Ken from the beginning. “I’ve always felt a business must have growth, or it will die. I’ve always kept up with industry trends and I took some risks along the way. Fortunately, the risks I chose to take paid off for us.” Ken moved the business to a 2-acre property after four years and stayed there for 33 years. In 1988, Mills Fence opened an additional office in Northern Kentucky, Ken’s home state. In 2007, the Ohio location expanded to a new, 11-acre property, where it remains today. Ken reports they are now the largest fence company in the Ohio-Indiana-Kentucky Tri-State region, and one of the area’s larger fence wholesale stores. While they still service residential customers, their largest installations today are in the commercial and industrial sector. The Mills are a family that fences together! Ken’s wife, Patti, did the payroll in the early days and worked in the office during her summer breaks from teaching. In 1975, Ken’s brother, Alton Mills, became a co-owner with him

until his retirement in 2005. Ken’s nephew, John Lyttle, who had worked in the company for several years, became his new co-owner and the two continue run the company together today. Both of Ken’s daughters, Ashley Smith Mills and Catherine Mills-Reynolds, along with Catherine’s husband, Kyle Reynolds, are part of the management team. Ken says his family maintains a work/life balance by not bringing work problems home. “We love what we do, but we only talk about fence issues where they can be addressed and fixed, and that place is at the office.” If given the choice, Ken says he’d do it all over again. “Owning my own business has been a wonderful experience for my family, however, it’s not for everyone. You have to be tough and not let the little stuff get to you. Stay focused on the goal.” He says he is most proud of having turned a profit every year of their 52 years in business. Today, Mills Fence has 70 employees. The company has seen approximately 35% growth over the past five years, with annual sales volume of $26 million. “The largest growth we’ve seen has been in our wholesale material department, an area in which we are focused on growing even more.” Ken’s best advice for someone wanting to start their own business is “to be ready to work hard and to keep yourself out of debt. Pay your fence bills before your other bills. You don’t want to be in debt to the people you are buying material from. This will save a lot of headaches down the road. Another piece of advice” adds Ken, “treat people right, price competitively and work hard. If you do that, you will grow and make money.” Learn more at www.millsfence.com.

WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER

Americans are overworked, overstressed, and overstretched. The impact of the worldwide pandemic is still affecting businesses in many different ways, and rising inflation is creating new worries. We seem to exist in an endless cycle of working hard then harder without an equal return on our investment. In a perfect world, we’d take off on an extended vacation to relax and leave all our troubles behind. But in the real world, we’re all still here trying to figure out how we work smarter instead of harder. Here are some strategies for doing just that: MAKE LISTS. If you’re not a fan of to-do lists, it’s time to develop
