LARGEST AMERICAN OWNED FENCE DISTRIBUTOR & MANUFACTURER

“It all started with a single piece of pipe”

In 1974 Terry Stephens had an idea. He knew if he could sell fence products at a competitive price and quickly deliver it to his customers, he would have the seeds of a successful business. Founded on these ideals, he knew the strength of his idea was grounded in the people who would make them work. J.R Mann was the first person to propel his vision. Today, 47 years later, those same principles continue to guide us. Stephens Pipe and Steel employs more than 1300 people in 16 locations, strategically located to service its more than 5,000 customers nationwide. We are the largest 100% American owned and operated manufacturer/distributor of fencing products. All of the framework and fabric we manufacture is 100% Made in the USA. Join the growing family of satisfied customers who use Stephens Pipe as their “One Stop Shop” for all their fencing needs.

Entering our 47th year, we still strive to be the best. Every day more changes happen in the fence business. But not here. Not us. What propelled us from the beginning continues to this day: nothing is more important than building a long lasting relationship with you, our customers.

Making Chain Link Safer for Children Chain link fence exists as a safeguard, to keep what belongs and keep out what doesn’t belong. For parents and others who own or manage outdoor areas where children play, the safety of the children is a big part of the decision to install fencing. It’s important that contractors understand this motivation to keep children protected when working with these customers. This will help you point out some of the inherent risk with any type of fence, including chain link, and make recommendations for hardware or other modifications that can increase the safety of the fence while minimizing any risk.

There are many ways to make chain link safer for children. Here are a few suggestions.

Cover Sharp Edges Install safety covers over the sharp edges at the top of the fence to prevent children from cutting themselves or catching clothing on the fence if they are trying to climb. This is typically sold as fence top guard, fence crown, fence top protector or another similar name. Most options come in rolls that are clamped in place over the top of the fence.

Prevent Climbing Children love to climb and chain link fences provide them with convenient hand and toe holds for getting the job done. This can lead to a child wandering into danger if they are successful in scaling the fence. In addition, young children don’t always know their limits and may also reach the top and not know how to get down, leading to a fall. Climbing can be deterred by adding privacy screens or privacy slats to the fence which weave into the holes of the chain link fence and effectively remove hand and toe holds. Privacy screens also prevents strangers from observing children at play.

Minimize Under-Fence Clearance Climbing isn’t the only way to escape the confines of a fence. If too much space is left between the bottom of the fence and the ground, a child could squeeze through opening, and it doesn’t require as much space as you might think. As a rule, there should be no more than 2 to 3 inches between the bottom of the fence and the ground. If the fence is being installed on uneven ground, you may need to level the soil or fill in low points to keep the clearance to a minimum.

Install Childproof Gates Give any child enough time and they will figure out how to open a standard gate latch if it’s within reach. Just as childproof safety locks are recommended for interior doors, childproof latches should be installed on all chain link fence gates to prevent children from opening the gate.

Install Adequate Fence Posts Some customers may try to save money by reducing the number of fence posts recommended for their chain link fence. Inform them of the increase safety risk, particularly for children, if posts are not placed every four feet. If a child accidentally falls against the fence, or finds a way to try to climb it, it may topple under his weight if the recommended number of fence posts are not installed. Creating a safe outside space for children to play gives fence companies and their customers peace of mind.

Ball Fabrics Selected as Master Distributor for Fence Guard Ball Fabrics, Inc., of Deland, Florida, has been selected as nationwide master distributor for Fence Guard, the unique fence cap used on ball fields around the country. “We are thrilled and honored to be chosen to represent such a high quality and well-known product,” said Larry Ball, president of Ball Fabrics. “Everyone recognizes Fence Guard as the unique design that slips over the top of chain link fences for safety and aesthetics. It is by far the most durable and most popular of the current fence cap products.” In order to make Fence Guard more easily available to customers, Ball Fabrics will be warehousing and distributing the product, which is available in various weights and colors, out of two locations -- Jasper, Indiana, and Deland, Florida -- with plans for several additional warehouse/distribution centers around the country.

Paul German Nebraska Plastics

Celebrating 75 years of business, Nebraska Plastics is a model of how to be innovative, nimble and survive in a competitive industry. The company’s founder, Milo German, started working with a new material called plastic, since aluminum was going toward the World War II effort and therefore, unavailable. In 1945, he started what is now the oldest family-owned plastic extrusion company in the North America: Nebraska Plastics. Unfortunately, he was killed in an airplane crash in 1957. His son, Rex, stepped into a leadership role at the young age of 22 and continued the invention mindset with the company developing the first above ground PVC gated irrigation pipe. While doing so, they developed the first weatherable PVC compound. This lead to more innovation by developing the first tongue and groove PVC plank and the world’s first vinyl fence. Today, Milo’s grandson, Paul, is at the helm and the company currently is expanding capacity to satisfy the high demand for their products. Innovation is literally in the company’s DNA. INVENTION IS A RECURRING THEME IN YOUR COMPANY’S HISTORY. WHAT IS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON FINDING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR PROBLEMS? It’s a worn-out phrase, but you have to think outside the box and be open to change. The construction industry, in general, is reluctant to change. If our company would have been unwilling to change, we would not have invented new products and grown. We might not even still be in business. PART OF YOUR BRAND IS COUNTRY ESTATE VINYL. HOW DID THAT NAME COME ABOUT? HOW DOES THAT FIT WITHIN NEBRASKA PLASTICS? The very first vinyl fences were just post and rail. Many of our first customers were large horse farms or people who lived on acreages. So, the name fit with our market.

FEBRUARY 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

YOU RECENTLY EXPANDED TO NORTH CAROLINA. HOW HAS THAT HELPED YOUR REACH AND AVAILABILITY FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS? WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT LOCATION? Our expansion to North Carolina has been in the works for several years. We knew we were going to need to expand at some point and we realized that if we were going to be competitive in that market, we needed to have a production facility there. This greatly reduces the freight cost for those customers. They still get the same high quality products that are produced in Nebraska at a competitive price and better customer service. North Carolina is centrally located on the East coast and allows us to concentrate on North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, while also being able to reach the New England states and Florida. I had visited the community of Edenton before and fell in love with the area. I

reached out to the economic development for the town and they made it work. We are very lucky to be in a community like Edenton and Chowan County. It reminds me of our own hometown of Cozad, Nebraska. Both are small communities that are proud of their heritage and work together to support each other to get things done. The location worked strategically and it was a community we wanted to be part of. HOW MANY EMPLOYEES DO YOU HAVE? Currently, we have over 160 employees. YOU GREW UP IN THE COMPANY. HOW DID THAT PREPARE YOU FOR LEADING IN EVENTUALLY? Growing up around the company as my father was running it, allowed me and my siblings to appreciate the hard work it took to build this business. My father was

passionate about this company and the people who worked here. We saw that every day and it taught me how important the people you work with and your customers are and to appreciate them every day.

industry before leaving that career and starting my own fence company in Des Moines, IA.

DID YOU CONSIDER DOING SOMETHING ELSE AT ANY POINT?

In 2005, I owned my fence company in Des Moines and was a regional sales manager for Country Estate Vinyl Products covering eight states. My father, who was president at the time, had a stroke. He recovered and was still able to work; however, it made the family realize we needed to plan for a transition to the next generation. My father left it up to me and my siblings as to who would take over leading the company. My siblings voted me to be the one and in 2006, I moved my family back to Cozad to be vice president and eventually, I was promoted to president and CEO.

I’m actually the only one of my siblings who didn’t work in the company in high school. We were strongly encouraged to go to college and were told we must have a career outside the company. Then, if we want to come back and if there is a position for us, we can come back. All four of us had careers outside the company and eventually wanted to be a part of making the company successful. When I was in college, I did not envision coming back to Nebraska Plastics. Nebraska is a large, beef-producing state and I wanted to be in the cattle business. My education is in agri-business and after college, I worked in the livestock feed

HOW DID THE TRANSITION COME ABOUT FOR OUR DAD, REX, HANDING THE REINS OVER TO YOU?

WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU PRODUCE? Nebraska Plastics produces Country Estate Vinyl Products and sells into the fence and railing markets in North America and some foreign countries. We still produce a line of PVC above and below ground irrigation pipe. This ranges from 6” to 12” pipe that is distributed in central and western part of the United States. We also make a 2x8 plank that is sold for walls inside hog confinement buildings. YOUR CLIENT LIST IS A HOLLYWOOD’S WHO’S WHO! TOM SELLECK, MEL GIBSON, WHITNEY HOUSTON AND MORE. WHAT ATTRACTS THESE CELEBRITIES TO YOUR COMPANY? I’m not sure. We still have celebrities from time to time purchase our products. Most of those listed purchased in the very early years. My guess is that they were attracted to a new and innovative product and also realized it was very high quality. Continued on p20

Top of the Chain, continued from p17

WITH ALL THAT COMES WITH BEING IN LEADERSHIP, HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR TIME? Hire the best people and trust them. This allows you to concentrate on the bigger picture. With everything that goes on in a company, it’s easy to get bogged down with little details. If you have great employees, you can trust them to take care of those details. I’m always humbled at the many great employees I work with every day that are so dedicated to the company and produce great products and service to our customers. Another important part is to make sure you take time for yourself away from work. I try my best to leave my job at the office when I go home and enjoy my family and hobbies.

WHAT HOBBIES DO YOU ENJOY? I enjoy golf, boating, fishing, hunting, cooking, wood working, and making wine. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR TEAM MOTIVATED AND ON TASK? I envision my job as hiring the best people by creating a place they want to work, then point them in a direction and give them the resources to be successful. Good employees want to succeed. If you give them what it takes to succeed, it’s amazing what can be accomplished as a team and they are proud to be a part of the company’s success. Our company has been successful because of the great employees and customers we have been fortunate to have worked with over the years. Do what you can to make sure they know you appreciate what they do.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS CONSIDERING STARTING A MANUFACTURING BUSINESS?

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR FUTURE GROWTH IN YOUR COMPANY?

Be passionate about what you do, get involved in the industry and, once again, hire great people with that same passion. I think back to fence contractors I have worked with over the years. Sometimes you find a fence contractor who is starting their business; they are very good at both sales and installing. However, they struggle with growth because they are concerned about hiring someone and trusting that they can install or sell as well as they can. Don’t be afraid to hire great people and trust them to do their jobs. This allows you to concentrate on growing and managing the business.

Right now, we are committed to increasing production in North Carolina and further developing that market. This will also allow us to key on potential customers in other parts of the country with production from Nebraska. Once that is accomplished, we may look at other locations that make sense strategically to open another production facility. We are committed to producing the best product that our customers expect at an economical price. The future growth must stay true to our core values that our customers have grown to expect. We are always open to new and innovative products. Throughout the 75 year history of our company, we have transformed three different times to new and innovative products. If we are going to succeed for the next 75 years, we must be open to change.

Panic Bars Designed to Prevent Tragedy

Today, panic bars are such a standard feature that many people take the technology for granted. Just a little over a century ago, many buildings and fenced in areas were secured with deadbolts or iron gates that blocked public exit and could only be opened by someone with a key. Unfortunately, this led to several fatal accidents. Hundreds of people perished in fires in 1883, 1903, and 1908 from iron gates, deadbolts, and other locking mechanisms that did not allow for emergency exits. After this string of tragedies, the hardware industry developed a solution to prevent this type of catastrophe. Panic bar (sometimes known as a crash bar) technology was designed to allow people to exit an area during an emergency situation. “At DAC Industries, we manufacture accessories that allow panic bars to be easily installed on various types of gates, with exterior applications in mind,” explains Jen Klassen, DAC owner. “Gates are necessary in keeping an area secure, and the addition of panic hardware is essential in ensuring occupants have a quick way out in the event of an emergency.” Klassen says there are a several different types of panic bar hardware and accessories available today. Some require access control tie-in; others use basic keyed entry. “The right solution for your project depends on individual job specification and local regulations. It’s technology that will both keep property secure and could save lives in the event of an emergency.”

4 SITUATIONS WHEN YOU NEED A PANIC BAR If you are determining what types of panic exit hardware to offer to your customers, Klassen says it is helpful to understand the types of situations where it is used and why. She offers several examples of areas that should have panic bar exit hardware incorporated into the fence installation: SCHOOLS, DAYCARE FACILITIES, COMMUNITY PARKS: Not surprisingly, spaces where children learn and play should be designed with thoughtful safety considerations for how the space is accessed and exited. Creating appropriate boundaries through fences and safety hardware assist in controlling unauthorized visitors, while permitting safe exit. Security in these spaces is extremely important, and quality hardware is essential. RESTAURANT PATIOS, OUTDOOR EMPLOYEE AREAS: Outdoor patios and break areas may be wonderful for patrons but can raise significant challenges for restaurant owners/employers. Access to these areas needs to be restricted but a safe, quick exit is essential.

CARE INSTITUTIONS: Mental health institutions, nursing homes, and other facilities that provide care often include outdoor space to promote the health of patients and residents. Easy-to-use and effective panic exit, often involving delayed egress, is also a means to protect patients and is key to ensuring their safety. POOLS: Pools are a great amenity for hotels, resorts, schools, apartments, communities, and other facilities. It is important to design fencing with hardware to not only keep pool users safe, but also to prevent children from entering unaccompanied.

For contractors, it is important to make sure you understand the specific codes of the geographical areas you service so you can best assist your customers in selecting the correct products. Different cities may require different types of safety hardware, including panic bars, for specific types of installation. Learn more at www.dacindustries.com.

AMAROK’s Fortifeye Honored with 2020 ASTORS Homeland Security Award AMAROK is the recipient of the coveted 2020 Gold ‘ASTORS’ Homeland Security Award for Best Perimeter Protection for its FORTIFEYE solution. Hosted by American Security Today, the Annual ‘ASTORS’ Awards, now in its fifth year, is the preeminent U.S. Homeland Security Awards Program, highlighting the most cutting-edge and forward-thinking security solutions coming onto the market today. FORTIFEYE was selected for the award for its ability to protect the perimeters of commercial businesses and industrial sites by integrating electric security fencing, video surveillance, and video monitoring to create an ultimate crime prevention solution. A first-to-market security solution, FORTIFEYE provides a multilayered defense system for businesses that is engineered to deter theft, detect activity, and detain criminals. FORTIFEYE’s protections starts with The Electric Guard Dog™ solar electric fence which delivers 7,000 medically safe, but memorable, volts of electricity to wouldbe thieves. Warning signs along the fence’s perimeter serve as a strong preventive measure to stop criminals in their tracks. If there is a criminal daring enough to try and breach the fence, the second layer of security is initiated with high-resolution video cameras mounted at strategic points along the property. Ultra-bright lights and loud alarms trigger while the cameras pan and zoom, capturing and recording every second of activity in real time, from initial approach to flight. The third line of defense is video surveillance with security professionals monitoring the property. If the fence is breached, they instantly verify the break-in, satisfying dual verification requirements to dispatch authorities and detain the suspect. Mike Dorrington, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at AMAROK, says, “This honor from American Security Today confirms our market leadership in the growing field of perimeter protection, keeping criminals out of our customers’ property. Our people are focused on effective, efficient safety and security for Americans, and this

BOOST YOUR PROFITS WITH FENCE STAINING An easy way to add beauty and durability to a fence. Fence staining has become one of the most profitable add-on sales in the fence industry. Homeowners across the country are becoming more interested in what they can do to protect the investment of their new or existing fence. Fence staining increases the curb appeal of the property, preserves the fence by sealing and waterproofing the wood resulting in added life to the structure. A properly applied one-coat application of Wood Defender Fence Stain will add two to six years of life to the structure, resulting in residual income for the contractor that establishes a maintenance plan with their customer.

Standard Paints, Inc. has specialized in manufacturing industrial coatings and stains since 1952. They provide the technology and manufacturing capability to build all types of coatings. For exterior wood protection, they offer their Wood Defender oilbased penetrating formula. All of the Wood Defender Fence and Exterior Stains are built on-site at their manufacturing facility in Mansfield, Texas with the highest quality raw materials and stringent quality control measures.

EASY TO APPLY. There is no wrong way to apply Wood Defender Fence and Exterior Stains. They can be applied with a brush, roller, pump sprayer, backpack sprayer, airless paint sprayer, or a Wood Defender commercial spray system. The common goal that needs to be consistent with any application method is saturation of product. If properly applied, the product will last well beyond the warranty period. With a one coat application the homeowner will receive a uniform application with no runs, drips or visible lap marks, no back-brushing required. All of the Wood Defender Stains are mildew resistant and are formulated with ultraviolet inhibitors to stabilize the wood color and provide long-lasting wood protection. When applying a maintenance coat, simply apply another coat to rejuvenate the appearance of the structure if no mold or mildew is present. Stripping of product and extensive pressure washing is not required with Wood Defender Fence and Exterior Stains. This is a strong 30

FEBRUARY 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

benefit for contractor increasing job-site efficiency and the homeowner as they do not have to pay for cleaning and preparation to have their structure resealed. EASY TO CLEAN. EZ Kleen, a concentrated degreaser and cleaner, is specifically formulated to remove stain overspray from an array of nonporous surfaces, including windows, gutters, downspouts, and air conditioning units. When used immediately after stain contacts a porous surface such as concrete, stone, or brick, it’s proven effective in removing overspray from such porous substrates. LONG-LASTING. Wood Defender products are backed by a written warranty. As the products age over time, they do not blister, crack or peel like film-forming stains. The oil-based penetrating stains aid in the reapplication process. They offer multiple formulas and a wide variety of color options to satisfy the needs of contractors and their customers. The Wood Defender Fence Stain and Seal and the Wood Defender 200 Series Stain and Seal is manufactured in both transparent and semi-transparent formulas. Technology has aided in evolving the Wood Defender manufacturing process over the last 25 years. Technology has provided improved raw materials such as U.V. inhibitors and a proprietary mildewcide and fungicide package in the Wood Defender brands. The Wood Defender Fence Stains are formulated for fences and standalone, non- traffic structures. The Wood Defender Transparent Fence Stain and protectant utilizes ultra-fine trans-oxide pigments to highlight the wood’s grain and other positive characteristics, and increase resistance to UV rays. This product is often the preferred product for new cedar fences. All transparent fence stain carries a two- year warranty and often lasts up to four years, depending on the application rate. The Wood Defender Semi-Transparent Fence Stain is the best-selling Wood Defender product, earning it “The Contractor’s Choice” stamp of approval. The stain’s unique pigment combination is formulated to act as a protectant against UV rays and provide better coverage overall in one easy coat with no runs or drips. It excels on aged structures that have to be cleaned prior to application but also performs well on new wood surfaces. All of their semi-transparent fence stain is backed by a three-year warranty and often lasts up to six years, depending on the application rate. Continued on p30

training class that covers product knowledge, bidding, marketing techniques, social media, application methods, clean up and profitability. Wood Defender Certified contractors can stain a 200 Linear foot fence in less than an hour with their products and a quality piece of stain equipment generating a national average of $600 per hour. That cannot be said with film-forming stains that will require the entire surface to be back-brushed or rolled. At Wood Defender Training classes, contractors are impressed with the application ease of Wood Defender in comparison to other paints and stains. The one-day class includes a hands-on demonstration to cover proper application rate and physical properties of the stain. After completing the class, participants will become a Wood Defender Certified Contractor with the knowledge and experience to start a business staining fences or implementing wood preservation to a current business plan with continued support from the Wood Defender team. However, with the impact of COVID-19, they have modified their Wood Defender Training Classes to offer multiple classes each month with fewer attendees to follow safety protocols and keep both customers and employees safe. Check out Wood Defender on Facebook and Instagram where professional projects are showcased. There is also a portfolio of Wood Defender colors applied to projects. On Facebook, those interested can also join the Professional Fence Staining Group by Wood Defender to learn about the efficiency of fence staining and profitability with commercial grade equipment, ask questions and learn more about the fence staining industry. TAKING A DIVE

into Pool Fencing

Even as snow covers the ground in much of the country, now is an optimum time for many homeowners to consider installing a pool. There are a lot of decisions to make so working through them in the off season makes sense. One decision that goes hand-in-hand with deciding on whether to have a pool is what type of fence to install. “Pools and fences should go together,” explains Ben Jodoin, vice president of sales and marketing with Ultra Aluminum Manufacturing. “You should never have a pool without a fence. Having the proper fence around a pool is critical for two reasons: following safety protocols is literally a life and death issue with drowning being the number one cause of unintentional death for children between ages one and four; secondly, it is the law throughout the United States in all but the rarest of circumstances. Not abiding by those laws can put an installation company in serious legal jeopardy.” Like all fence applications, deciding on the type of material used is determined by factors such as budget, aesthetics, performance or simply by what is specified. Chain link, wrought iron, vinyl, mesh, PVC and aluminum are all types of materials used for pool fencing, but they each have their pros and cons. “Being an aluminum manufacturer, I would obviously recommend my products as having the best combination of looks, performance and value,” says Jodoin. “Regardless of the material used, the critical decision concerns the actual style and configuration of the fence because, unlike many other fence applications, pool fencing is a life safety issue. Determining whether the product will protect against an accidental drowning supersedes any other decisions.” Children’s safety should be top of mind for any pool owner. A pool fence is a secondary layer of protection, after the doors to the home, to keep children away from the pool when no one is there to supervise. Pets are another cause

36

FEBRUARY 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

for concern around pools. Yes, most dogs and cats can instinctively swim, but they often have difficulty getting out of the pool. Because they have to keep their heads tilted back to avoid getting water in their noses, they can’t see where the stairs are. They’ll try over and over to lift themselves out of the pool, until they finally exhaust themselves and can no longer stay afloat. A fence is only effective if the gate and gate hardware are in good working order and meet local safety codes. Equipping your pool gates with the safest, most advanced hinges and latches available only makes sense as they help reduce the risk of a tragic accident, for both the homeowner and your business. D&D Technologies invented MagnaLatch® pool safety gate latches and TruClose® self-closing hinges and have continually improved these products over the past 30 years. They are the safest and best-selling safety gate hardware in the world. “When selecting pool gate hardware, it should be of the highest quality available, considering its important role in protecting children and pets,” explains Jeff Horton, marketing manager with D&D Technologies. “ COMMON REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE: • The latch-release mechanism be at least 60 inches above ground level • The gate should open outward, away from the pool • Maximum clearance at the bottom should be no more than 4 inches • The latch cannot be key locked to the open position • The gate latch will latch from any position, including from resting on the latching mechanism MagnaLatch ALERT is D&D’s latest safety innovation, providing both audible and visual alarms if the gate is not physically latched. You can see at a glance and hear from a distance if the gate is not latched. Offering the latest technology to your customers will not only help save lives, but also help differentiate you from your competitors.

Fence companies have a critical role in the effort to save lives. A few important points they can communicate to customers are a gate must be regularly inspected to ensure it closes and latches securely, never prop open a pool gate and invest in quality, state-of-the-art pool gate hardware. D&D Technologies MagnaLatch is adjustable and includes alignment markers, making it easy to keep the gate functioning properly year round. While TruClose hinges are adjustable for closing force, creating the perfect pool gate hardware system. Both products carry a limited lifetime warranty, are constructed of metal replacement polymer and stainless components, making them rust-free, and are designed to last a lifetime. In addition to the safety of children and pets, adhering to pool fence laws is important. Some states require pool fences and most insurance companies require them as well, before providing insurance. Most pool fencing companies in your area as well as city hall will have the most updated requirements. “Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA) provides guidelines for pool fencing through a National Building Code,” explains Jodoin. “It’s important to note that what they publish is a minimum requirement and many municipalities require that contractors go well beyond what is found in the national code, particularly when it comes to height. The main factor that’s consistent among all products is that the fence cannot be climbable, so rules include things like minimum spacing for horizontal rails and maximum spacing for vertical members as well as limits on mesh size for chain link. There are also several stipulations for gates that include self-closing hinges and latches that cannot be accessed by small children. Since it’s impossible for manufacturers to know the codes in every municipality, it’s ultimately up to the contractor to determine the requirements for their market.” Before your clients take a dive into their new swimming pool, it’s best to ensure they have the safest type of fence possible so they can enjoy their pool with a lot less worry. Good fences make good pools. Please check with BOCA, your insurance provider, and local authorities for regulations in your area.

Reasons to Incorporate

Decorative Metal Fencing

In Colonial times, only the wealthiest could afford to import wrought (meaning hand-shaped) ironwork for their regal brick and stone townhouses. By the early 1800s, however, as blacksmithing became more prevalent in the new United States, ornamental iron began to embellish a variety of home styles. This type of metal ornamentation peaked in popularity during the Victorian era, when foundries started casting and mass-producing embellished pickets, posts, and scroll details.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and there are many types of modern metal fences that offer traditional iron design elements. But using metal fencing doesn’t have to be rigid or even traditional. Spirals, spears, circles, fleur de lis and other custom decorative features are common in metal fencing. You can even see fence designs that are unique and customized, adding flair and dimension to traditional metal fencing designs. Here are 5 reasons you should encourage your customers to use decorative metal in their fence designs:

1

Add a Personal, Elegant Touch.

2

Privacy.

3 4 5 38

Decorative metal adds a distinctive elegance that makes a home or business stand out. True to its earliest use during the Victorian era, decorative iron provides enhanced sophistication to a traditional metal fence. Custom designs can incorporate artistic elements or tie into the architectural design of the home. A commercial fence could reflect the brand identity of the company, incorporating its logo into the design, for example.

Depending on the design, decorative metal panels can make it more difficult for someone to see through the fence. These panels can also section off different areas of a yard or property as a stand-alone piece of art. Metal privacy screens bring a beautiful aesthetic and are available in multiple shapes and designs.

Added Protection.

Certain metal fencing can create the space/opportunity for animals, debris, and even people to enter. If this is a concern, there are options that offer more protection. Privacy panels offer very little space for intrusion and can be customized with decorative designs. Spear-topped fences add an additional layer of protection from intruders by inhibiting climbing. Long vertical spacing prevents climbing and add height, and sharp shape of spears at the top make climbing a more dangerous proposition.

Low-Maintenance.

Metal fences are very durable, even with decorative elements are added. With the right installation and care, these fences can last 20 years or more. Modern coatings can help prevent scratches, rust or corrosion, depending on the material chosen.

Endless Options.

Decorative metal is available in many shapes and designs – from traditional to contemporary – making it easy to find the right option for any home or business. Customization expands the options available, with artistic designs and color variations that can create a truly unique look.

TransGard Substation Fencing Protects Equipment and Prevents Animal Intrusions for Potomac Edison Potomac Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., has installed new interior fencing at an Allegany County substation to help deter climbing animals and protect against electrical equipment interference that can cause power outages. The fencing from TransGard was installed around the 433-foot perimeter of the equipment, to help keep electricity safely flowing to customers while keeping animals out of harm's way. Next to weather-related damage, animal intrusions are the most common cause of substation outages. Every year, squirrels, snakes and other climbing animals cause hundreds of substation power outages that leave thousands without power — and cost millions in repairs. Unlike other types of animal traps and deterrents, the patented TransGard fencing installed by Potomac Edison prevents a wide range of climbing animals – including squirrels, raccoons, opossums, cats, frogs and others – from accessing the substation equipment and discourages them from trying again. "Equipment interference from an animal intrusion can cost thousands of dollars in damage and require hundreds of labor hours to repair as well as causing extended outages for customers," said James A. Sears, Jr., president of FirstEnergy's Maryland operations. "This special fencing is an economical solution to prevent these types of service disruptions in the future." Potomac Edison has installed TransGard fencing at 17 substations across its service territory since 2014 and has seen a sharp decline in substation outages due to animals as a result. “TransGard’s patented design delivers a humane – but effective – electric shock that deters climbing animals,” says Bill Reichard, President of TransGard. “Power providers use TransGard fences to protect more than 3,000 North American substations. Now, other sectors like the oil and gas industry are beginning to adopt TransGard to protect expensive infrastructure that’s vulnerable to animal incursion.” Squirrels and other climbing animals have a highly developed memory that enables them to remember locations for food, warmth and shelter. With one brief contact with a fence panel, animals learn that a substation is not a welcoming location to visit and typically avoid it in the future. TransGard fences feature a unique modular, freestanding design that offers fast installation, easy access and simple reconfiguration or expansion. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) has called the TransGard approach the most effective barrier against animal incursion. Learn more at www.transgardfence.com

TransGard Names Worst Animal-Caused Substation Outages of the Year

Each year, TransGard tracks hundreds of substation outages caused by climbing animals and birds to compile our list of the worst outages of the year. This year was special in that COVID-19 closures and restrictions made system reliability even more critical than in the past. That made power outages and service interruptions an even bigger challenge than ever. And even though many businesses experienced a slowdown in activity due to social distancing – the animals were hard at work. Here is TransGard’s list of the Six Worst Outages for 2020 — each involving costly repairs and damaged reputations for utilities and substation operators: 1. S CHOOL’S OUT IN WISCONSIN HEIGHTS: Seven hundred students in the Wisconsin Heights School District, Wisconsin, were sent home in January following a substation explosion caused by a squirrel incursion. Students arrived at their school buildings to find there was no light, no heat, and no means for food preparation. Classes were canceled for the day.

3. R EPETITION IN REPTILES: Snakes were the cause of two power outages in April and one in June at three different substations in northern and central South Carolina, disrupting service to more than 6,000 residents and businesses. The snakes each entered their respective substations and created short circuits by bridging the gap between pieces of equipment.

2. M IGHT AS WELL CHECK YOUR MESSAGES: More than 100 signal lights across Grand Rapids, Michigan, went dark on June 30 when a squirrel entered a substation and damaged the equipment. Impacts on traffic and area businesses lasted for more than an hour.

4. ( WET) STICKS AND STONES: The city of Kelowna, British Columbia, was without electricity due to an osprey’s decision to drop a pile of wet nesting materials into part of a substation. Residents remained without power while the substation was taken offline, nesting materials removed, and repairs made.

5. S EAT OF (NO) POWER: On November 16, Columbia, South Carolina — the state’s capital — was without electricity for hours when a squirrel entered a substation and created a short circuit between sensitive pieces of equipment. Several neighboring communities were also left in the dark. 6. T HIS WEEKEND FLEW BY: More than 7,500 residents of Sandpoint, Idaho, spent part of an early December weekend without power following an outage caused by a flock of birds which entered a substation in Bonner County, came in contact with sensitive components, and interrupted service.

This list represents a fraction of all animal-caused outages, many unreported, at substations in every region and climate of North America. While some substation operators take steps to prevent animal incursions, thousands of at-risk substations remain unprotected.

Fencing Leads the Way for Animal Safety Why did the moose cross Interstate 80? Because three-and-a-half miles of fencing guided it to Utah’s largest wildlife overpass. Source: Smithsonian Magazine

Utah’s Department of Transportation completed the bridge in 2018, and new video from the state’s Division of Wildlife Resources shows dozens of animals using it to cross safely above six lanes of traffic. The overpass is 50 feet wide and 320 feet long, and its location was picked strategically based on the animals’ migratory patterns. Experts originally anticipated that local wildlife could take years to get used to the new, animalfriendly infrastructure, but in the last two years, cameras placed along the bridge’s guardrail captured footage of not only the expected deer, moose and elk, but also predators and small mammals. Utah plans to conduct a full analysis of how the bridge has improved safety for wildlife and people, after it’s been open for three to five years. The cameras show moose, deer and elk trotting across the bridge, as well as black bears and bobcats. Boulders and logs are strewn across the bridge to help it blend in with the

landscape on either side and encourage animals to use it. And the animals do, as video footage shows a big cat scratching and stretching on one of the logs. In the two years before the overpass was built, UDOT recorded 106 collisions between vehicles and animals, which killed 98 deer, three moose, two raccoons, two elk and one cougar. The wildlife overpass was built as part of a larger UDOT project that also added a climbing truck lane and replaced several miles of asphalt. The overpass incorporates over three miles of fencing stretching in both directions away from the bridge in order to guide wildlife toward the safe point to cross. After one year, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources was surprised to see that cougars, coyotes, and yellow-bellied marmots had joined deer and moose crossing the bridge. It will be a few more years until Utah has its official results of the I-80 overpass. But studies of wildlife crossings in Florida, Australia and Mexico have shown that they save both human and animal lives by preventing collisions. FENCENEWS.COM | FEBRUARY 2021

The State of

FENCING FOR 2021 Tom Luby, Business Consultant

and Fence Industry Spokesperson

With 2020 finally behind us, what can we expect for 2021? The COVID-19 pandemic and tremendous political and social upheavals have dominated not only news cycles, but our everyday lives. We survived and now must look forward to what is next. For now the new norm for the fence industry seems to be a volatile supply chain, drastically spiking pricing and questionable delivery times, to say the least. What many of my clients are asking is why? What is the cause of the shortages across the board in fencing, pardon my pun. Shortages for wood, steel, ornamental iron, chain link and even vinyl are persistent. How long can we expect this situation of volatility in the supply chain to last? It reminded me of the early days of the pandemic and the unforeseen and unexplained run on toilet paper. Now wood and steel seem to be the new toilet paper, and this is frustrating for managers and purchasing agents. But this was not the first time; back in 2004, we suffered shortages for many fence commodities, especially steel and vinyl. “What happened in 2020 was unforeseeable in many respects,” says Michael Siegel, coowner of Ideal Aluminum Products of St. Augustine, Florida. “I don’t think any company had a ‘pandemic playbook’ to manage supply chain and customer relationships. We have seen the largest companies on the globe unable to keep up with supply from consumer goods like toilet paper to building products like fence. To expect smaller companies to have a plan to adjust to these situations is more than can be expected, really. At Ideal Aluminum, we are very focused on understanding our customers (fence contractors and distributors), and their customers (consumers and commercial general contractors). I don’t believe I saw anyone predict the downstream increased demand for fence products when the pandemic hit. “Most people were thinking it was 2008 again, and like that recession, entire equity in 44

FEBRUARY 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

the business might be at risk,” he continues. It is unimaginable to sustain a demand drop to zero for 30-60 days. It is difficult to even imagine a 50% decrease in demand over a six to ninemonth period, not knowing if there would even be a return to old norms. Fortunately for us in the fence industry, it went the entire opposite direction. Demand is strong, the supply chain upstream is a challenge, and costs are shifting. But these are good problems to have. It sure beats the challenges of the hospitality industry.” Many contractors are now worried about getting product and installing that product in a timely manner. “With COVID-19, the year 2020 brought a whiplash impact to supply chains across the globe that no supply chain manager could have planned for properly,” explains Lisa Malone, senior director of Supply Chain Management for Ameristar and Jerith. “The great toilet paper shortage of 2020 should have proven to residents of the United States the fragility of supply chains. While this case may be toilet paper, one can relate this to current supply chains across the globe and how the effect of unplanned consumption can disrupt some of the strongest supply chains. We see this within the steel industry today. This isn’t just one person’s problem as it is an industry problem, not only at the steel mills but downstream manufacturers, OEM’s, and end users. “At the start of the pandemic when the automotive industry announced the pause of its production due to the COVID-19 outbreak, steel mills were forced to stop production and idle furnaces (the start of the whiplash),” Malone continues. “When automotive production came back online, it came back online with

a vengeance. Steel demands were much higher than the steel mills could supply due to the idling of furnaces. This created massive shortages of available capacity to the open market for steel tonnage, which is what a lot of the industry is facing today (the back end of the whiplash). The situation should not surprise any supply chain manager, as this is basic supply/demand economic theory. However, with prices skyrocketing in incremental increases faster than ever before, buyers of steel are left shaking their heads as to why steel isn’t available unless you are under contract. “At Ameristar Perimeter Security and Jerith Manufacturing, we have always strived very hard to build our end-to-end supply chain as secure as possible considering reliable sources and a consideration for total cost (price, delivery and quality). The numberone important element in developing our key supplier partners is based on a mutual partnership. I believe the word ‘partnership’ is abused a lot in the supply chain world as many believe the partnership only goes one way, supplier to customer. In other words, ‘supplier, what can you do for me today?’when in fact, ‘partnership’ is a two-way street.” Malone says, “This means an understanding for each other’s businesses, full transparency as it relates to communication and extreme professionalism. In the end, we are all trying to do what is best for our businesses but we must approach with logic, reason, and respect. Without the true foundation of a partnership between a supplier and a customer, the rest is merely a transaction. The end-to-end supply chains that will succeed in 2021 will be the supply chains that have partnerships with the key suppliers and provide the best information

regarding demand projections, priorities, needs and can reason with the conditions in the marketplace. “The supply situation, across the United States and the world as it relates to raw material availability, will be a rough ride, at least through the first half of the year,” Malone projects. “Aluminum and steel face issues with more demand than the current market can supply and until that balance is restored, supply chain managers will be in positions to pay higher prices to secure raw material unless contracts are in place. Without a contract, it is nearly impossible to secure steel. Many steel buyers are hopeful that a repeat of 2004 will not occur. “I tell my supply chain team at Ameristar and Jerith on a regular basis, ‘The plan is the plan until it needs to be revised again.’ The important thing is that there is a plan that has the input of downstream customers and upstream suppliers. Collaboration and planning this 2021 will be the key to success for supply chains across our fence industry, other industries, and around the world,” says Malone. That whiplash effect that Malone so accurately described for steel is a contributor to the shortages we see in other areas of the fence supply chain. Vinyl extruders and the raw PVC pellet producers that supply them were comparably affected, with shutdowns and then whiplash restarts following major increases in demand, especially in the

ENTRY PRO

residential side of fencing. To compound the situation, the major box stores like Home Depot, Lowes and Menards Home Improvement stores saw demand for lumber, vinyl and steel fencing shoot through the roof and guess what, because of their tremendous volume buying power, the box stores were the first to receive product and the fence industry got what was left over. Andrea Hogan, CEO with Merchants Metals, says, “In the spring of 2020, at the start of the pandemic, demand for steel-based products, particularly automotive, plummeted and a significant amount of steel manufacturing capacity was taken off-line. That capacity has remained idled even though the demand for steel and steelbased products has largely returned to normal levels. Demand is far exceeding supply and that has driven prices up at an unprecedented rate. “PVC fence manufacturers were caught offguard by strong demand over the summer,” Hogan continues. “As a result, lead times more than doubled and all distributors for these products were put on allocation. Then, in August, hurricanes in the Louisiana Gulf region caused damage to facilities that produce resin, the raw material that is converted into PVC. Those storms took roughly 25% of the resin producing capacity off-line which has made a bad situation worse. As a result, resin pricing quadrupled since October, lead times are quoted in months as opposed to weeks, and supply is significantly constrained.”

El estado de

LA ESGRIMA PARA 2021 Tom Luby, Business Consultant

and Fence Industry Spokesperson

t n e m e g a r n e a n M or C SETTING CLEAR GOALS FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES: Structure Ensures Success Innately, humans crave structure. Why is it that structure is a necessity for us? Even children – who seem to want to do as they please at all hours of the day – crave the stability of a structured environment. We even subconsciously create structure for ourselves through our daily habits; it is a primal instinct that we desire to feel safe, and habitual things become so because even in the simplest of ways, they have proven day-after-day to keep us safe. We do this in our own little worlds every single day because it’s what we need to thrive. Structure equals safety. It’s a basic human need, so it only makes sense that as an employer, you would want to follow this ideology in the workplace. There are many ways you can create structure for your employees, but setting goals is a proven method to fill the needs of both the employee and the organization – job safety and business safety through the establishment of a clearly set bar. Think of the satisfaction you get when crossing something off your to-do list. The list staring back at you just wants to have its items checked off. To-do lists are little lists of goals, and simply just making that list will motivate you to start getting things done. Goal-setting for your employees will do just that: motivate. When there are no set goals, employees will begin to feel low morale. They won’t know what’s expected of them. Goals create structure, and since humans thrive when in a structured environment, structure begets motivation. When we see a target, we want to take aim. Once the target is seen, we immediately start to size it up. But what if it’s difficult to tell how far away the target is? What if there is another target in its 52

FEBRUARY 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

way? There must be a clear path to the goal; seeing what it’s going to take to get there is beneficial for the employee and for you. If a goal is clearly set, it will be measurable. This is important because if you, as the employer, can look at the progress of an assigned goal and measure it specifically, both you and the employee will have a better grasp of what is being achieved and if the goal is on schedule. It’s also easier to see the bigger picture through a measurable goal. Measurability means it is clear the impact their work is having on the organization, giving the employee a deeper, more meaningful sense of satisfaction and accountability. Be sure to remain open to the evolution of goals as the environment of the year fluctuates. If you set goals in the beginning of the year, and don’t revisit them until it’s time to review an employee’s performance, this can create a very stagnant, demotivating atmosphere. Keep your finger on the pulse of the goals you set and adjust them when needed. Your staying abreast of this process through communication with your staff will allow for an environment that promotes teamwork. Each member of your team will understand the importance of their place in the puzzle – emphasizing the importance of everyone’s working as one whole. Sometimes, we can all struggle with time management. Having clear goals set not only for ourselves but for our employees will help manage time – one of the most valuable resources in business. If the employee knows what is expected of them and when it is expected, it will prevent them from getting distracted or working on things that are irrelevant. This means they will be better able to prioritize their

daily activities and improve their decision-making based on the goals that have been set for them.

Using the SMART method of goal-setting is a tried-and-true way of creating goals that are clear and concise. When setting goals for your team, try to follow this simple method.

• SPECIFIC – for effective planning • MEASURABLE – is progress being made? How can you tell? • ATTAINABLE – be sure it’s reasonably accomplishable • RELEVANT – should align with long-term objectives • TIME-BASED – set an end-date that is realistic but motivational

If the goals check off each element of the SMART method, your chances for success are promising. Your employees’ success is your success. Set them up for this by tapping into the very human desire for structure. Clear goals will achieve this, creating for your organization a better, more motivational, and positive environment. Your employees – and your business – will thrive.

WORKERS’ COMP REQUIRED But how does it work? As a business owner, you have a lot of insurance options to consider and workers comp is a vital piece of your coverage, because accidents happen. Workers’ compensation (comp) insurance helps cover an employee’s medical bills and lost wages, as well as an employer’s legal expenses in the case of a work-related injury. Each state administers its own workers’ comp program through a commission or board that ensures businesses comply with the workers’ comp laws. All states except Texas require that businesses with employees carry workers’ comp insurance, but some states don't require an employee to be covered if he or she is paid solely by commission. In addition, depending on the number of employees, type of business and work, you may be exempt from requirements. These exclusions typically include farmworkers, domestic employees and seasonal workers. As an employer, you will likely need to cover all your employees, but you may not be required by law to carry coverage for yourself as an officer or partners. However, in certain industries like construction, you often need to show proof of workers’ comp insurance before work can begin. Many clients and customers will ask for proof of your coverage, so it is a good idea to get workers’ comp insurance for yourself as well. In most states, employers can meet their workers’ comp obligations by purchasing an

54

FEBRUARY 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

insurance policy from an insurance company. However, five states and two U.S. territories— North Dakota, Ohio, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Island, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming, require employers to get coverage exclusively though state-operated funds or monopoly funds. If your state allows coverage by private insurance companies, find a top-rated provider that has experience in claim handling and the specific coverage you need for your business. It is always a good idea to get quotes from a few providers to ensure you’re getting the best rate. Given the state-by-state approach, there is no single cohesive set of rules governing benefits, coverage or premium computation. The closest thing there is to a ‘rulebook’ can be found by visiting the National Council on Compensation Insurance at www.ncci.com. This organization creates policy forms and writes the rules for premium computation in most states. But, whether your business is small or large, handling the expense and effort of meeting state’s requirements is an ever-present challenge because in addition to the premium itself, costs include payments made under deductibles, administrative costs of handling claims and reporting to the state and your insurer. Your coverage cost is based on several factors including: payroll, location, number of employees, industry and risk factors, coverage limits and claims history. The penalties for failing

to carry it are steep, most including large fines and imprisonment, so do check with your state to ensure you are classifying workers properly. A great way to manage your insurance expenses is to find a provider that has a “payas-you-go” billing solution that bases premium charges on real-time payroll numbers. This allows you to pay your premium after each payroll instead of large up-front payments and reconciling at the end of the year. In addition, addressing workplace safety practices for your business and implementing safety measures to have better control over it is an effective way to control your workers’ comp cost. As a business owner, operating as safely as possible is a goal no matter what field you are in. However, no matter what you do, workplace accidents can happen. When these situations occur, you’ll want the peace of mind to know that your business and employees are covered with a comprehensive works’ comp policy.

Protect Your Most Important Assets in 2021

by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP Executive Vice President, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute

In the fence industry it seems like people are always being asked to prioritize. Which is more important, price or quality? If you want it there in time, are you willing to pay extra? We’ve only got enough crews to finish three jobs today, not all four. Which one can wait until Monday? 2020 brought even more decision-making challenges. Who do I lay off if some of these restrictions don’t ease up? Which of my customers gets the next shipment, since everything is on back order? In 2021, one of these many prioritization challenges has an easy answer. When it comes to priorities, people always come first, not profits. There has never (at least not in our lifetime) been a more critical time for employers to show their employees how much they mean to the company. Everyone is still on-edge because of what began in 2020. The covid pandemic itself, and also the reaction to it by businesses, government agencies, consumers, the media, etc., has created one of the greatest periods of uncertainty in workforce that the United States has seen since the great depression. And, in this case, it’s not all about the money (sure, some of it is, but not all). It’s really about safety, and trust, and, above all, empathy. Empathy, according to Google, means “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” And that’s fine. However, having empathy for someone is a characteristic, something you are born with or possess. Communicating empathy, however, is a skill, and it’s perhaps the most valuable skill you will need to have in 2021 to keep your company’s workforce in place and productive. That’s because telling your employees you “feel their pain” isn’t what’s important. What’s important is that they believe you feel their pain. Here are some ways you can communicate real empathy to your people this year: DON’T JUST INFORM YOUR PEOPLE—INTERVIEW THEM, TOO. The biggest fear people probably have right now is still the covid pandemic and their health (and that of their family).. But don’t just take that as a fact. Why not ask your employees (individually) what their biggest concern is when they get up in the morning. Sure, some will say avoiding covid, but some might say paying the bills, finding a school for my kids, finishing their certification, etc. Create some empathy by listening, and then repeating some of their exact thoughts or words when you respond or follow up.

TALK ABOUT THE FUTURE When you talk to your people - at all levels - about the future of the company, it gives them a sense of something to look forward to, and a feeling that they are going to be a part of that future. Let them know which (if any) covidrelated changes or protocols that are going to be permanent. Tell them what lessons the company has learned about these unexpected emergencies and what you are doing to be more prepared the next time something like this comes up.

LEAD THEM OUT OF THE DARKNESS Do research, hire a consultant, contact business and community organizations, and anything else necessary to help guide employees through this next part of the pandemic- the vaccination stage. There is too much clutter and confusion in the information available to the “public” about what happens next, to whom, etc. Take the extra step (and maybe expense) to bring in credible leaders of your community or state healthcare office for a customized overview of what’s happening and how it affects your company and its employees.

UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF EMPLOYEE RETENTION When companies put substantial resources into employee retention, they get substantial returns. Part of developing an effective retention plan in this environment will be to identify the true cost of losing one employee. It’s not an even swap to just lose one employee and replace him/her with someone at the same salary. You can’t forget the costs of retraining, benefits packages, severance pay, lower productivity (at first), staff morale, etc. Remember, the value of a good, satisfied employee isn’t just measured in dollars, it’s also measured in what they add to your team.

56

FEBRUARY 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

Of course, it seems logical that everyone understands that your employees are your company’s most valuable assets. But when was the last time you told your employees that? Not in a memo or an email, but in person. Relieve some of their anxiety about 2021 by letting them know you do understand what they face each day, and you are trying to make being part of your company one of best places to be right now. Show them they are not only valuable, but that they are also valued! Continued on p56 Don’t just tell them you have empathy, show them. Having empathy is a characteristic, communicating empathy is a skill – a leadership skill, in any organization.
