Chain Link, tube

& Fittings

14

Adaptability of chain link is a key component to its longevity. Manufacturers continue to build on processes and additions to further strengthen it, along with fittings and tubing, to meet the needs of both commercial and residential clients.

PROTECTING AND SECURING WITH CHAIN LINK Safety and protection are top priorities for commercial and residential chain link fence projects. Theft, vandalism, damage from pests, even snow, wind and ice are all threats to homes, gardens, property and vehicles. Providing a secure barrier against these is important. “An advantage with chain link fencing that we stress to potential new clients is customization,” says Kevin Sodermark, vice president with Delta Fence and Construction / L&C Enterprises – USA, located in Michigan. “The ability to attach an additional overhang or custom chain link configuration for dogs and other pets is a valuable factor when working closely with homeowners. In some of the jobs we’ve handled, the homeowners were worried about predators getting in or their dogs getting out. In both cases, we made an additional two-foot angled overhang at a 45-degree angle to provide safety for their pets. This customization provides an often-overlooked value related with chain link fence, which is peace of mind. Having the ability to increase peace of mind for both pets and pet owners turns a one-time sale into a lifelong friendship.”

FEBRUARY 2024 | FENCE NEWS USA

As with a well-designed fence to protect pets, a well-designed fence to protect one’s garden is essential for many homeowners. It sets a defined perimeter, preserving and protecting the produce and plants within. “Chain link fencing is a great option to thwart the appetite of our four-legged, white-tailed, and sometimes antlered forest friends,” explains Sodermark. “Rabbits and deer can cause significant damage to gardens, consuming a lot of vegetation in a short amount of time.” Getting enough height on a chain link fence is a key component for deterring wildlife. “Deer can jump rather high,” says Sabrina Larson, sales manager and estimator with Delta Fence. “A shorter fence will not deter them. We listen to homeowners’ problems and help them find solutions. For example, here in our area, we know certain vegetables and flowers aren’t as appealing for deer. These work well alongside chain link fence, since they don’t attract wildlife into the garden.” In addition to keeping wildlife out of gardens and yards, the weather can be detrimental to fencing. The cycle of freezing and thawing during the winter

months can cause fence posts to heave, crack and bend, becoming brittle over time. “We’re often asked to repair or replace segments of fencing where the posts have heaved or the fabric breaks due to deterioration or degradation over time,” says Larson. “We treat these repairs as opportunities to educate the homeowner or business owner about the best materials and processes to help protect against the elements.” In the pre-production or design phase, Larson works with customers to help them identify problems, allowing the team with Delta Fence to put together a fence solution. “Understanding their concerns, and working with them on the solution is one of the rewards of what we do,” Larson says. “We’re building life-long customers and enhancing our community.” For more information, visit deltafenceman.com.

5 WAYS

GALVANIZING CHAIN LINK MATERIALS SUPPORTS SUSTAINABILITY Galvanizing is a process that prioritizes sustainable practices in the industry, aligning with the global focus on preserving our planet for future generations. “We believe in working to minimize our impact on the environment whenever possible, so we are proud to include galvanized chain link fence materials in our inventory,” says Todd LaVigne, owner/CEO of American Fence Company in Omaha, Nebraska, one of the nation’s leading residential and commercial fence contractors

1

Extended chain link fence life reduces material consumption. Fewer repairs and replacements mean less materials are consumed. Galvanizing offers long-lasting protection for steel, significantly extending its lifespan. With galvanized coatings lasting for decades, there is a reduced need for constant repairs or replacements. This means fewer raw materials are required for future projects, contributing to lower environmental impact.

2

Minimized factory emissions. The longevity of galvanized materials benefits the environment in multiple ways. Forbes reports that a substantial amount of energy in the iron and steel industry is used to produce crude steel. By hot-dip galvanizing steel and making it last longer, less crude steel needs to be produced, resulting in lower factory power consumption and reduced emissions. In addition, the galvanizing process itself requires less electricity and gas compared to alternative coating methods, further decreasing manufacturing emissions.

3

Use of abundant natural compounds. Hot-dip galvanizing utilizes zinc, an abundant and natural element, to coat and protect steel. This environmentally friendly choice outperforms alternatives like epoxy or paint. Epoxy, a plastic coating, contributes to pollution and takes an extremely long time to decompose. Paint often contains toxic substances or fails to provide effective protection against corrosion. In contrast, galvanized steel is composed of elements naturally present in the soil, eliminating the use of harmful chemicals and compounds, thus minimizing environmental impact.

4

He explains that galvanizing not only benefits consumers and manufacturers but also supports sustainable development. “Its decreased production needs, lower emissions, and recyclability make galvanizing an appealing choice for those seeking to protect the environment while maintaining project standards.” The team at American details five ways galvanizing has a green environmental impact:

Minimal waste and recyclability. The galvanizing process generates minimal waste, making it environmentally friendly. Any zinc that does not adhere to the steel during coating can be collected and reused. The zinc is contained within vats, melted down, and reutilized. Flaked or fallen-off zinc can easily be returned to the hot baths for melting and reuse. Additionally, galvanized steel is recyclable at the end of its lifespan without losing its protective properties. This recyclability ensures that existing galvanized materials can be broken down and repurposed for creating new ones.

American Fence Company offers a range of galvanized building materials. In addition to their inventory, the company provides galvanizing services to coat steel, ensuring both durability and sustainability. Learn more at theamericanfencecompany.com.

5

Enhancing green power solutions. Galvanized steel plays a vital role in green power infrastructure. Solar panels use galvanized steel in their frames, and wind turbines utilize it in their towers. Galvanizing these materials extends their lifespan and enhances their resistance to corrosion. By incorporating galvanized steel, these renewable energy practices can reduce their environmental impact.

US PREMIER TUBE MILLS EXPANDS PRODUCTION CAPACITY TO MEET MARKET DEMAND US Premier Tube Mills is expanding its production capacity by adding a new state-of-the-art powder coat line which will be operational in the spring of 2024. This new line will double the current capacity of the company, allowing it to meet the increasing demand in the marketplace. According to Scott Young with US Premier Tube Mills, the new line will be equipped with the latest technology and will be able to produce highquality products efficiently and effectively. “This expansion is a significant step for our company and will help us maintain our position as a leading player in the industry.”

The company’s product line includes: PT 15, 20 and 40. A complete line of commercial, industrial and high-strength security products fabricated with high yield strengths of up to 50,000 PSI that exceed strict industry standards and easily outperform Schedule 40 pipe in both strength and corrosion resistance. In addition, the products feature an advanced inline triple coat protection process which includes an initial zinc bath, an intermediate conversion coat and a vacuumsealed clear topcoat for maximum protection. PTR. The same quality that goes into the PT line of industrial and commercial grade products can be found in their PTR series for residential applications. These products offer superior strength with a high yield strength of 40,000 PSI – the highest grade available in residential applications. PTR also offers superior corrosion resistance.

US Premier Tube Mills boasts a product line that spans the spectrum of fencing needs, ensuring their customers find tailored solutions for every project. From residential to commercial and industrial applications, including high security, Young says their product line is designed to meet and exceed expectations. “All our products are manufactured in the USA using American made steel and are in compliance with all federal, state, and local specifications. We also meet Buy America (n) requirements.

Pipe Configurations. Both round and square pipe configurations in a variety of OD sizes and gauges are available. “We are excited about our growth and the benefits it will bring to our

CASE STUDY: RETROFITTING CHAIN LINK FENCING FOR ADDED SECURITY Chain link fencing is a popular choice for commercial properties, offering a practical, low-cost solution for enclosing a property and adding security. However, in some cases, the protection provided by a chain link fence may not always meet the security needs of the business. This is exactly the challenge presented to the fence professionals at Rite-Way Fencing. They used their experience to retrofit the fence to significantly enhance the security it delivers. THE PROBLEM The commercial property owner in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, had installed a chain link security fence with barbed wire. However, criminal activity in the area increased and thieves were cutting the fence and going through it to access the property. In commercial and industrial parts of most cities, there's a lot of activity during the day, but at night, there are very few people around, giving thieves ample time to breach the property. Even with cameras and alarm systems, it can be hard to catch criminals in the act. THE SOLUTION In this case, since there was unlawful access through the fence itself, Rite-Way supplied and installed additional steel tubing spaced at 18-inch intervals along the height of the fence. These pieces of steel were then tack welded to the posts along the fence line, and the welds treated with cold galvanizing. This cost-effective addition to the fence makes it much harder for people to climb through the fence if the mesh is cut. It is now impossible for a thief to remove a section of fence for foot or vehicle access. While this might not stop every criminal, it will delay entry and make it a lot easier for the authorities to be alerted. OTHER OPTIONS Other options for increasing the security of chain link fencing include installing welded or expanded metal panels, switching mesh for a smaller mesh aperture or heavier gauge wire, just to name a few. These types of retrofits improve security, without the cost of a fully new fence. According to the Rite-Way team, a security retrofit option can be found for most fences that are in good condition. Rite-Way Fencing is Canda’s largest fence company. Learn more ritewayfencing.com.

SPECIAL SECTION: CHAIN LINK, PIPE & TUBE

PRODUCING THE FRAMEWORK FOR CHAIN LINK SUCCESS Chain link fences are known for their simplicity, durability, and affordability, which is why they can be seen in a wide variety of applications in both residential and commercial settings. Most professionals would agree that the most important component of the chain link fence is the framework – the steel tubing that acts as posts, creating a frame for the steel mesh to be hung. The tubing offers stability and support to the chain link mesh, and is resistant to rust and corrosion.Stephens Pipe and Steel (SPS) has been providing these products since the company was founded 50 years ago. What was started in 1974, (selling framework to local fence companies in Kentucky) has grown into the largest American-owned fence distributor and manufacturer. According to Kyle Holland with SPS, in addition to their other capabilities, chain link fabric and framework provide the core products of their manufacturing capabilities. “We operate a GAW facility in Mt. Sterling , Ohio, in addition to weaving GBW and vinyl coated fabric at many of our branch locations. In Kentucky, we operate five tube mills where we manufacture the nation’s largest variety of pipe and tubing. In addition to standard specifications, we can also color-coat a wide variety of diameters and gauges to meet any project need. No job is too small or too large to complete.”

Polyester: Polyester/Polyolefin has a stage 5 pre-treatment wash to prepare the pipe for the electro-static polyester/polyolefin coating process. It meets the requirements of ASTM F1043, ASTM F1083 and F2589. PVC Heavy Mill: PVC Heavy Mill is cleaned and primed before being preheated in an oven and then dipped into a fluidized bath where the PVC powder bonds to the steel pipe. It meets the requirements of ASTM F1043. These same options are available for square pipe and tubing as well, which Holland says is most commonly used for ornamental fence, gates, greenhouses, OEM (original equipment manufacturing) and more. Five standard finishes are available: galvanized, black, brown, green and woodland. Color customization is also an option. SPS has built a reputation as a true one-stop-shop for all fencing needs. In addition to round and square pipe, the company manufactures all types of galvanized and color chain link fabric, gates, kennels, temporary panels, ornamental fence, PVC, ties, barbed wire and tension wire. Learn more at www.spsfence.com.

Domestic Hot Dip: Hot-dip galvanized pipe is formed before being galvanized. This protects the materials from white rust and corrosion. It meets or exceeds ASTM F1083 and ASTM F1043. Pre-Galvanized: Pre-Galvanized pipe is made from domestic hot-dipped galvanized flat sheet. It is treated with a conversion coating and then coated with a clear topcoat. It exceeds the coating requirement of ASTM F1043, Group 1C. Our SPS 40 products utilize steel galvanized to a G210 zinc weight, the highest in the industry.

Read the Specs for Commercial Fence Bidding Success by Robert A. Miller, PSP, CDT, CSI Imperial Professional Consulting Services

One of the most often asked questions when bidding a commercial fence project is, “If there is a discrepancy in the written specifications and projects drawings and details, which one takes precedence?” The short answer is the specifications. If the problem were to escalate and require litigation, case law supports written specifications as ruling over graphic information. Basically, if there is lawsuit and you did not follow the written specifications you may be liable. It’s vitally important to read the specifications. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recommends that specifications and plans be considered as complimentary, and there is an intention that they align. In the event of conflicts or discrepancies among the contract documents, the AIA suggests interpretations will be based on the following priorities: 1) Written Change Order or Contract Modification This is a written document that becomes part of your contract legally. These modifications will supersede any previously issued clarification or initially issued contract document. Most recent date supersede any previous change orders as well and could potentially completely reverse a previous decision. 2) Contract Agreement This is your actual written and fully executed contract (signed by all parties) either from a construction manager or owner representative. Always be sure to read the contract as there may be items changed or added from the bidding documents that affect your scope and possibly price. Always look for notes in your contract referring to published addenda or contract modifications, that may not be itemized in the agreement itself. 3) Published Addenda Most addenda are issued because of discrepancies found in the original bid documents that had additional information or clarification requested. Those with those with later date having precedence over earlier dates.

30

FEBRUARY 2024 | FENCE NEWS USA

4) Supplementary Conditions These are generally project specific requirements or even time constraining requirement relative to schedule and coordination. More than often, the supplementary conditions are unique or special things that owner, architect, or construction require for the project and project staff. 5) General Conditions These are conditions for the project that all bidding entities must follow. This may include special training requirements, toolbox talk documentation, etc. as well as certifications, affiliations, and qualifications. 6) Division 1 – Specifications – General Requirements General Requirements presents more-detailed, although still general, administrative, and procedural requirements for temporary facilities and temporary construction, and project-level performance requirements. 7) Division 2-49 – Specifications These are trade specific product and installation requirements often directed specifically to the items or products you are installing. Fence generally falls into Division 32, but specialty item or other products in your scope may fall into another category or be cross referenced to those categories requiring that you comply with those specifications as well. For instance, you bid the fence, but it references concrete for your foundations in Division 3; you are required to comply with those requirements even if they are not industry standard. You may always use 2500 psi foundation concrete, but the specification may require 3000 psi. Read all the specs that apply to your bid category. 8) Drawings Be aware that often, designers will use a manufacturer’s standard drawing as a reference, but the written specifications allow for alternate products or possibly something completely different than shown on the drawings.

Essentially, the core of successful project estimating is reading the project manual and focusing on the project specifications. I assure you that there is no architect or engineer who is trying to make it tricky or confuse anyone. They, more than anyone, want a seamless and successful project. But we are human, and mistakes will be made; so, it is critical that you remain considerate. An architectural team is responsible for thousands of specifications on a single project, and our category of fence products falls into section 32. There are 31 sections of multiple products being specified from electrical, to paint, to mechanical systems, all being prioritized over the fence. When you find a discrepancy between the graphic details and specifications, you should immediately call it to the attention of the construction manager, architect, or engineer and request that a written clarification be issued. This is normally done by filling out a Request for Information (RFI) document that is in the specification manual. Certainly, it’s no coincidence that to clarify you need to read the specs. Commercial bidding in the fence industry can be challenging. If you take your time, read thoroughly, and most importantly, plan; you’ll find success in growing your business.

Ron Chouinard

PRESIDENT, L&C ENTERPRISES USA AND DELTA FENCE

“There has to be an easier way,” has been career motivating for Ron Chouinard, president of L&C Enterprises – USA and Delta Fence, both located in Michigan. It has led to innovation and better business practices, leading to enhanced customer service and a legacy as a premier provider within the fence industry. HOW DID L&C ENTERPRISES BEGIN? I started fencing when I worked for a road construction company in Lansing, Michigan, in 1988. I met Jeff Lancour, my business partner, a few years earlier on his dad’s farm when I was 11. I worked as a laborer for his dad; Jeff was like a big brother to me. A couple years later, while working in road construction, Jeff asked me to be his crew foreman. We were doing seeding, mulching and some guard rail. While we were doing those jobs, the owner asked us to install a mile of 6’ tall fence with 6-guage fabric. We didn’t know how to do it, so we asked and were told to manually stretch the fabric by hand. Knowing we had difficult terrain ahead, we thought to ourselves, “there must be a better way”. We drew plans for a machine to stretch, carry, and roll fabric out with a tractor. We brought our plans to a welder who built it for us. We named it the Installink Fence Dispenser, and it easily handled that job, which weighed about 310 pounds per 50’ roll. Next, we took Installink to a fence industry trade show; it garnered a lot of interest. It was about this time that Bobcat loaders came out. Fencing installation moved from tractor-driven power to skid-steer operation. We went back to the drawing board and hired an engineer to update Installink enabling it to mount the fence dispenser on the front of the skid-steer instead of the back of a tractor. We demonstrated the improved Installink to a Michigan company, leaving it with them for a week. When we went back, they said, “There’s no way you’re taking this from us!” The owner wrote us a check that day, saying, “Today, we both made money.”

40

FEBRUARY 2024 | FENCE NEWS USA

We went around the country, demonstrating to fence companies how to use the Installink and showing them how it could save time and money. In 1989, we formed L&C Enterprises - USA and in 1990, we established Delta Fence and Construction as the fence installation arm of our company. We’re located in beautiful Escanaba, Michigan. HOW DID TWIST TIGHT TIES COME ABOUT? We found ourselves in another situation requiring a little outside-thebox thinking. A representative with a prison contacted us to tie the fence fabric a certain way. The ties had to be individually cut and bent to meet their requirements. The process was slow and difficult. “There had to be an easier way” helped us think creatively, again. We devised a pre-formed tie that was easy to install and provided the security that the prison needed. It was the first in a line of Twist Tight Fence Ties. These make it easier for fence crews to install commercial chain link fence with less physical strain and greater efficiency. After that job, we made our first tie machine, it made 1000 ties per hour. We continue to improve, and since then, we’ve developed the Easy Twist Ties that come in a variety of shapes and vinyl colors. HOW HAS THE FENCE INDUSTRY CHANGED IN THE LAST 10 – 20 YEARS? The fence industry was lacking in automation; everything was done by hand. Over time, the

owners of fence companies see that, in many cases, equipment can do a better job than person power. Person power gets sick, injured, retires or goes to a different career. Equipment shows up to work each day. I remember one company that bought an Instalink machine from us, and they also had a Bobcat. They named these two pieces of equipment. The owner said they were the best two employees he had; they showed up to work, don’t get sick and do their jobs. I believe the chain link industry and fence industry are going to always be strong in our economy. Not because of product or price increases; it’s because of society. The days of leaving a car or house unlocked are gone. People are trying to find ways to make a buck by stealing. The world is becoming a more dangerous place. Fencing deters thieves. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE FENCE INDUSTRY? I enjoy meeting people from all over the country. Through the years, I met and made friends with several highly respected people in the fence industry; people who helped change the industry and make it better. A few of these folks are Bill Ulrich, with Anchor Fence and a consultant with Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute; Bill Peters, president of Richard’s Fence; and Bob Majors with American Tube & Pipe. They, along with many others, have dedicated their lives to improving the fence industry. They were a big reason why I joined ASTM a while back, working to standardize how fences and fencing materials can be built, so everyone is building the same way. Back in the day, companies were using inferior chain link fence material, and giving the chain link industry a bad reputation. We committed to using only higher gauge, quality chain link material and we’ve seen more companies in this

area embrace chain link. My advice is to do quality work, use quality materials and use commercial grade products. Due to our commitment, we’ve built a good reputation for quality work. WHAT OTHER WAYS HAVE YOU IMPLEMENTED INNOVATIVE PROCESSES? We worked with manufacturers to make 100’ rolls in 9 gauge, these work best with Installink, and that’s where companies can save time and money. We did it by stretching barbed wire, three strands, 10’ up. We made a machine to go in front of our tractor. We made another machine that allows us to stretch barbed wire for free while we are going around and tying the fabric. When we worked with airports or prisons, installing miles of fence, every lap around that fence counts. We were able to stretch the barbed wire and tie the fence all in one pass. That saved a lot of time. In our shop, everything has a home, and everything has a place. If you teach everyone where things go, you don’t waste time looking for lost things. At the end of the day, you can take a quick look and you will know what is missing. Time management is big. We even considered how much time is used with staff finding a bathroom; especially on jobsites where they must find a store or restaurant to use the facility. So, we even customized our fence trailer to have an outhouse in it. You don’t see that in the industry very often. Our custom-built fencing trailer has an outhouse, so our crew doesn’t have to inconvenience a client or take time away from the install driving to a public restroom. WHO IS FENCEMAN? Fenceman came about because of the trade shows we went to in the 90s. We wanted a mascot who reflected our motto of making fencing more efficient. We had a friend in advertising, and he helped me develop Fenceman. He’s everybody’s hero. He wants to come to the rescue by taking care of the customer. It’s a fun way for us to promote the fence industry and encourage camaraderie among all of us involved in it. WHAT BUSINESS PRINCIPLES HAVE SERVED YOU WELL? Quality is the one principle we focus on most. Quality material, quality labor and quality people. Treat staff well, pay them a fair wage and train them because they are the face of the company. We believe every company should have a real person answer the phone and answer questions for clients or potential clients. Customer service is important. We enjoy talking with our customers. It’s a small community up here in the UP (upper

peninsula); you really get a chance to know your neighbors and work with them. If you use quality materials, have a quality staff and are working with quality people, there is a good chance the job is going to be successful. IS THERE A PARTICULAR JOB OR PROJECT THAT DIDN’T GO AS PLANNED? One of our early jobs was in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was an $800k job; we had to find a way to make money on it. It took eight months. This was when we first came up with our Barbed Wire Dispenser and Rapid Roller machine. We had 35,000’ of fence to remove and 50,000’ of new fence to install. So, there was a lot of fabric coming down and a lot of fabric going up and a lot of barbed wire going on top. At that time, we had to figure out a faster way to do it or we would be leaving money on the table. At the time, I was doing bids by hand; this was before we had estimating software. I made a big mistake on the bid. I put the line posts in a $2.22 instead of $22. It was a $40k mistake, and it’s what got me the job! Sometimes, the person who makes the biggest mistake gets the job. With this job, there was a main bid and a few additions to the bid. The engineer for the project was familiar with our work and recommended us. We ended up getting all four bids and were able to complete the whole job while under budget and making a profit. In my opinion, a lot of businesses try to make their profit by skimping on quality; the customer ends up on the bad end of the deal. I disagree with that business practice. I like to find a way to do it faster and save money elsewhere, not on the quality of the product. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE STARTING THEIR CAREER IN THE FENCE INDUSTRY? Don’t undersell yourself, your skills, your knowledge or your labor! Your time and your labor are worth money. If you do quality work, you will get the jobs and you can charge more for them.

System Pavers Validates Momentum with Results from its Outdoor Living Trends Index As homeowners consider upgrades to their outdoor living spaces in 2024, System Pavers, the nation’s number one outdoor living design and installation company, has announced its Outdoor Living Trends Index, the first in a series of national surveys shared quarterly to track homeowners’ preferences. The first survey question asked homeowners about their 2024 home renovation goals and for their top outdoor living upgrade they would like to make. Results showed the addition of a fire pit was at the top of homeowners’ wish list followed by the addition of an outdoor kitchen and the addition of a pergola. Additionally, the replacement of concrete with pavers was the top goal of 20% of the homeowners surveyed. “The results of the first question in our Index are not in the least bit surprising based on feedback we receive daily from homeowners. Over the past several years, the fire pit has become synonymous with family gatherings and spending time

together with loved ones outdoors,” shares Joe Kauffman, director of operations, Texas at System Pavers. “Whether the homeowner wants to toast marshmallows with your kids over the open flames or enjoy quiet conversations with guests, System Pavers designs dazzling outdoor fire pit displays.” The second question asked homeowners to rank the spaces in their homes they would like to renovate most in 2024. Choices included kitchen, outdoor living space, living room and bathroom. Results revealed the outdoor living space as the top priority in 2024 for renovation with 34% of the participants ranking it first, followed by the kitchen and the bathroom. “As we look at sales and leads year-over-year, it’s clear homeowners are prioritizing their outdoor living spaces more and more. The momentum is exciting and validated based on the survey results,” says Syed Zaidi, CEO of System Pavers. “To stay current with evolving expectations, attitudes and behaviors about outdoor living, we will issue our

84 Lumber Donates $100,000 on Good Morning America to Help Rebuild Rolling Fork, Mississippi 84 Lumber, the nation's largest privately held building materials supplier, partnered with Good Morning America to give a special surprise to the nonprofit Rolling Fork Rising, announcing a donation of $25,000 in building materials and $100,000 in funds to help build more homes for families in the tornado-ravaged town of Rolling Fork, Mississippi. $2,000 was also donated in appreciation of community heroes. "It was an honor to partner with Good Morning America to celebrate an incredible story about resilience, teamwork, and community," says Amy Smiley, vice president of marketing for 84 Lumber. "At 84 Lumber, we help build America. So, it's a great privilege to support the mission of Rolling Fork Rising, and to help individuals and organizations most in need." A devastating EF4 tornado swept through Rolling Fork last March, killing 15 people and destroying much of the city's homes and businesses, leaving community leaders and charitable organizations to step up to work to rebuild the town together and get its residents back on track. Rolling Fork resident and pastor Britt Williamson took recovery efforts into his own hands, launching Rolling Fork Rising, whose mission is to help formerly renting families return to Rolling

Fork as homeowners. The organization is building 1,200-1,300 square-foot homes in the community to provide former renters with the opportunity to return to Rolling Fork and purchase new homes at a discounted price. 84 Lumber associates Robert Woodrow, divisional vice president, and Matt Watkins, area manager at 84 Lumber, were on hand to help deliver the

good news to the Rolling Fork community. "While we are the nation's largest privately held supplier of building materials, we are foremost a familyowned company, and we put people and the communities that we serve as our first priority," adds Smiley. Take Care of Your Company’s Most Important Employee – YOU! by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP executive vice president, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute 2022 Inductee, American Fence Association Hall of Fame

As we head into the new year with our usual list of goals for our companies, I think it is important to remember to look at the big picture on a regular basis. I’m not talking about contemplating the state of the fencing and construction industries, worrying about supply chain delays, or trying to figure out when some of those big infrastructure dollars are going to start trickling down to your area. The big picture I’m talking about is not taking stock of how your company is doing, it is about

taking stock of how you are doing. Many of us enjoyed the holidays because we got some time off to refresh, spend time with family, and get away from the day-to-day hassles of running a business. Hah! Did we really do that? Did we truly relax and not worry about our businesses at all over the holidays, even though our business probably wasn’t even open during much of the two-week holiday break. In the words of Kevin (the kid from Home Alone) – “I don’t think so.” Raise your hand if, during the holidays, you did any of the following: - checked your texts and emails daily (or hourly, or every 10 minutes) - spent any time thinking about what you needed to do to improve your bottom line in 2024 - returned at least one business phone call (even

though your companys phone message said you wouldn’t be re-opening until January 2) - started getting bored on days you were not working -snuck into your home office after everyone in the house was asleep, to get a head start on that bid that is due. I see a few (thousand) hands up. You get the picture. We do those things because that is how we were brought up in this business – you must put in the time. That is what it takes to cover all the details of the business. That is how we get to feel in control. We think that if we put in more time than our competitors, we are at an advantage. And so on.

Mark Levin - Take Care of Your Company’s Most Important Employee – YOU!

Here is the thing about the big picture: you must take care of yourself before you can take care of the business. If you are not healthy - mentally, physically, and emotionally – you are doing a disservice to your company and your family. One of the frustrations that comes with running a company is dealing with a workforce whose work priorities are different from our own. Not everyone wants to work as hard as the boss does. There are plenty of studies out there that can show us the varying work-life priorities of the people working in our businesses. Each generation (Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Y/Z, etc.) has a different viewpoint on where work fits into their lives. Many of the older owners/managers view work as extension of who they are, so they put in a ton of time at work. Gen Xers, those who are moving into ownership and management positions in many companies, tend to put a higher value on having a balanced life, where work and personal time are equally high priorities. Millennials are technology oriented, and the pandemic gave them a taste of “flexible work hours,” which they really think would be great all the time. Dealing with all these needs and perspectives just adds to the pressures of business and takes even more of your time. No matter how strong or young or virile you are (or think you are), all these things take a toll on your body as well as your mind. Don’t let them control you, you must control them. Here are a few ways you can do that. 1. Take work-life check. Slow down for a minute and ask whether your time is being spent where it should be. Are you spending enough quality time with your family? Are you remembering to encourage, recognize, and reward your employees? Think about what problems are causing you the most

stress, and what is your plan for taking care of those problems and moving on. 2. Prioritize everything and work from that perspective. There is limited time every day, so don’t get caught trying to do too many things at once. Your mind may tell you that you are good at multitasking but that can also lead to taking on too much and nothing getting done at the top level. Keep focused on your top priorities and tackle them first. Don’t get caught thinking, “I’ll just knock out the last of these little things and then I can concentrate on the big things.” Those “little things” never stop popping up. 3. Delegate, delegate, delegate. Effective delegation is one of the most important skills you can learn. Many owners and managers don’t like to delegate because: a) it takes time (“I might as well do it myself. It will take too long to explain this to someone else.”), b) it probably won’t get done, c) it probably won’t get done in time, d) it won’t get done the right way, or e) it won’t get done my way (which is, of course, the right way!). Time to move on. It was okay to try to do everything yourself for a while, but it’s not a good way to grow a business or avoid some serious health problems. Believe it or not (and we don’t believe it, of course) there are people in your company who can relieve some of that pressure for you. Give them a chance.

ownership of the problem and use their own creativity. Instead of saying, “I need this done right away,” have more flexibility and say, “I’d like to have this done by Tuesday. Based on your workload, do you think that’s possible?” You’ll be surprised how often they can get the job done faster and better if they feel a sense of commitment. 5. Include personal time in your planning. Don’t be afraid to put the time you need to keep healthy and re-energized into your calendar. Make sure that those personal days/ dates are locked in and stick to them. Yes, they can sometimes seem like the easiest ones to reschedule or replace, but they are just as important as some of those meetings and other work activities that are there. Remember that your work is what you do, it is not who you are. Find ways to make your work be a part of what makes you who you are, by giving yourself the personal time you need in 2024.

4. Set some guidelines, but be flexible. Rather than just worrying about getting things done, set up a system that allows your staff to feel like they have a real part in solving company problems. Let them feel some

Gate Safety It’s Time to Get on the OFFENCE Summaries available soon of UL 325 and ASTM standards

by Mike Gulledge Consultant, Thornton Fence Consulting Group

Sadly, another child has died because of a poorly maintained sliding gate. This one was in Tucson, Arizona, and it didn’t have to happen. For too long, our industry has not taken these incidents to heart. Just how many does it take for us to realize that what we do can be a danger to children and adults when we don’t do our jobs properly? There have been standards from Underwriters Laboratories from back in the 1990’s and maybe before then, advising us on how to properly install automated gates. The problem is too many of us have paid no attention to these standards and warnings, and accidents have happened. The real problem is that these most recent deaths have resulted from sliding manual gates. Yes, manual gates. Most of these deaths, and there have been many, have resulted because there was no fallover protection or positive stops on the gates to keep the gates from running out of their rolling hardware. A simple fix in almost all the fatality cases. We can do a better job. Recently, at the Thornton Fence Consulting Group Fence Business Conference that was held in Monkey Island, Oklahoma, there was a meeting of over 80 fence installers, manufacturers, AFA executives, FWA executives, ASTM representatives, and other industry members. There was a good discussion about how we can disseminate the standards that are out there but, due to copywrite laws, cannot be freely passed out.

68

FEBRUARY 2024 | FENCE NEWS USA

For years, there has been a coalition that has met and summarized the standards and has put them into a form used to teach installers around the country at AFA and other teaching functions. Those summarizations have been out there on the internet but, apparently, hard to find for some, unintentionally. That is no longer the case. The Thornton Fence Consulting Group has put together a comprehensive and easy-to-follow, 40-page book that explains the UL 325 and ASTM standards that pertain to the gate and automated gate industry. That book will soon be available to the public online at the Thornton Fence Consulting Group website, fenceconsultinggroup.com. Friends, these tragedies resulting in families without their loved ones could have been avoided simply through plain common sense. We must do better. Care about what you are doing. Care about the customers you are serving. It’s not that difficult. Most problems can be solved with a little bit of hardware, or certainly a fall-over preventive post. This doesn’t take much to do. Be assertive. Show initiative. One of the ideas that was tossed around at the Fence Business Conference meeting was for all of us to contact the schools in each of our areas to warn them that there are potential problems with some of the gates at their campuses. Older gates can be especially hazardous, but no one should overlook the new ones. We know there are problems out there. Tackle them. Make a name for

yourself in your community and spread the word. I encourage anyone who has not seen the video regarding this issue to visit this website: thehummingbirdalliance.com. Watch the video regarding the death of nine-year-old Alex Quanbeck from San Rafael, California. It’s a sad story but very enlightening. If you can watch that video, you will have a change of heart in how you look at gate installations in the future. Share the video with your employees and coworkers. Certainly, show it to your local school administrators. If they don’t do something, show it to the PTA/PTO groups. They will get something done, I’m sure of it! Also, during the Fence Business Conference meeting, the group made a strong commitment to bring the industry to a new level of professionalism. We should all be striving to do that. Our good friends, Shawn King of Mr. Fence Academy, and Chris Gass, also with Mr. Fence Academy and owner of his own company, Jack Fences in Lafayette, Louisiana, introduced a rallying cry for this initiative: OFFENCE. Yes, I spelled that correctly. We need to be on the offensive, striving to better our industry and raise the level of professionalism in each person who is out there installing, selling, and servicing fencing. We need to do something for our industry. We must do something, and it starts now.

Tragic Death in Security Barrier Accident HighlightS Safety Lessons A security barrier accident claimed the life of an employee and cost the company nearly $2. Tommy Manns, from Dymock, Gloucestershire, was driving for H. Weston and Sons Limited, the manufacturer of Henry Westons Cider, when he was killed by the end of a security barrier on September 28, 2020. It was his 65th birthday. The company, H. Weston and Sons, pleaded guilty to two breaches of health and safety law and were fined the equivalent of $1.7 million and ordered to pay over $34,000 in costs. Gate Safe, a non-profit organization, was founded in 2010 to improve the standard of safety for the installation and maintenance of automated gates and barriers. They are sharing this story to

call attention to important safety measures. The tragedy is an important reminder of the need to be vigilant when installing or maintaining a security barrier, manual or automated. The accident should be a lesson to all to remember the following key considerations: • Risk assessments are vital to ensure safety of a barrier. In this case, there was a lot of activity around the site and the 45-degree angle made it difficult to see the gate. Steps should have been taken to mitigate these risks. • A hold-open catch for the barrier when open would have prevented this accident from occurring. • Installers/suppliers should ensure that details

of safe use of the barrier is always provided to customers, this could include, for example, a simple flyer with each product explaining the risks of free movement and how to use the barrier safely. This is in line with the protocol for the supply of any automation equipment, so it makes sense to replicate this for manual products. • Ensure the overall design of the barrier is appropriate for the site setting. Gate Safe offers a safety guide found at gate-safe.org.

BUILDING CONNECTIONS: SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGIES FOR CONTRACTORS

In an increasingly digital world, social media has become a powerful tool for businesses of any size to connect with their audience. In this case,“audience” means potential customers and referral sources. For small businesses, including contractors, leveraging social media can be a game-changer.

There are a variety of effective social media strategies that can be easily adapted to the unique needs of the construction industry. These include:

VISUAL STORYTELLING Construction is a visual industry, and social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest are ideal for showcasing your projects. Share high-quality photos and videos of your work, highlighting the craftsmanship, unique challenges and other details. Before-and-after photos and/or videos and behind-the-scenes glimpses can help engage your audience.

SHOWCASE SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS In an era where sustainability is a key concern, highlight your company's commitment to eco-friendly practices. Share information about green building materials, energy-efficient projects, and any sustainable certifications your business may have. This can attract environmentally conscious clients and set your business apart.

EDUCATIONAL CONTENT Position your business as an industry authority by sharing educational content. Create blog posts, infographics, Q&A content, and short videos that explain the planning and process behind your work. Highlight industry trends and share helpful tips with your followers. This not only demonstrates expertise but also adds value to your audience, positioning your business as a go-to resource.

SOCIAL ADVERTISING Invest in targeted social media advertising to reach a wider audience. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram allow you to create highly specific ad campaigns based on demographics, location, and interests. This can be particularly effective for promoting special offers, showcasing your portfolio, and announcing upcoming projects.

ENGAGE WITH YOUR COMMUNITY Social media is not just a platform for broadcasting; it's also about building a community. Engage with your audience by responding to comments, asking questions, and actively participating in relevant conversations. Foster a sense of community by sharing client testimonials, featuring team members, and celebrating milestones.

COLLABORATE WITH INFLUENCERS Identify and collaborate with social media influencers or industry experts in your field. Influencers can help amplify your message, reach new audiences, and provide valuable endorsements. Look for individuals whose values align with your brand and whose followers may be potential clients or partners.

HIGHLIGHT SAFETY PROTOCOLS Use social media to showcase your commitment to safety by sharing information about your safety protocols, training programs, and success stories. This not only builds trust with your audience but also emphasizes your dedication to the well-being of your team and clients.

Standards for Design, Fabrication, and Installation of Fences Constructed of Wood and Related Materials One widely recognized source for standards related to fencing is the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). ASTM has published standards that cover various aspects of fences, including those made of wood and related materials. ASTM has developed standards that encompass various aspects of fence design, fabrication, and installation. ASTM F537 is an example of an ASTM standard that covers the installation of wood and related material fences. It provides guidelines and specifications for the installation of various types of fences, including those made of wood. Here are some key aspects typically covered in standards related to wood and related material fences: • Materials: Standards specify the types of wood or related materials that are acceptable for fence construction. This may include wood species, composites, and other materials. • Design: Standards may provide design guidelines for fence structures, including

considerations for height, spacing, and structural integrity. • Fabrication: Standards often detail the fabrication process, including the construction of fence components, such as posts, rails, and pickets. • Installation: Standards typically outline proper installation practices, including post placement, spacing, anchoring methods, and bracing. • Testing: Some standards may include testing procedures to assess the strength, durability, and performance of fence materials and structures. • Maintenance: Standards may include recommendations for fence maintenance to ensure its long-term functionality and appearance. It's important to note that specific standards may vary depending on the region, industry, or organization involved. To access the most up-todate and detailed information on standards for wood and related material fences, you should

refer to the relevant ASTM standards or consult with industry associations and local building authorities, as they may have specific standards and codes applicable to your location and project type. Always consult with local building authorities and zoning offices to understand any specific requirements or restrictions for wooden fences in your area. Remember that these are general specifications, and specific standards may vary by location and project type. It's crucial to check with local authorities and adhere to any applicable building codes and regulations when planning and constructing a wooden fence. Additionally, consulting with a professional fence installer can ensure that your fence meets the necessary standards and specifications for your specific needs.

Decking Industry Expected to Grow in Next Five Years The decking market size is expected to increase by $6.27 billion by 2028 according to a recent report by Technavio Research titled “Global Decking Market 2024-2028.” In addition, the findings indicated the decking market is fragmented in nature, and the market will most likely see a 5.54% yearover-year growth in 2024. In the study, the market was segmented by application (residential and non-residential), product (composite, wood, plastic, and aluminum), and geography (North America, Europe, APAC, South America, and Middle East and Africa). The report recognized the following companies as some of the key players in the decking market: Advantage Trim and Lumber Co., CRH Plc, Fortune Brands Innovations Inc., Humboldt Redwood Company LLC, NewTechWood America Inc., The AZEK Co. Inc., Timber Holdings USA, Trex Co. Inc., UFP Industries Inc., West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd., and Weyerhaeuser Co. The growing home improvement industry was cited as an emerging trend shaping the market growth, and that the home improvement industry is being driven by an increase in demand for customized outdoor design by consumers, as well as a rapid rate of urbanization. During the forecast period, the global decking market is expected to grow due to a shift in consumer preference for better home amenities, which has led to an increase in demand for products that provide enhanced comfort and convenience. However, consolidation of the global decking market is a significant challenge hindering market growth. Due to the increasing demand for decking, competition among established companies has intensified. As a result, they are now prioritizing after-sales services and vertical integration. Some companies have expanded their product portfolios by introducing various types of decking, such as composite, aluminum, and plastic decking. To read the full report, visit technavio.com.
