Capstone Project Added to Upcoming Fence Training School An additional day has been added to the Fence Training School schedule sponsored by North American Fence Contractors Association (NAFCA), to be held February 11 – 15, 2024, to complete a capstone project. “In addition to our various fence disciplines taught during school, we’re adding a one-day project: we will be installing 650’ of ornamental aluminum for the Florida Medal of Honor Memorial in Sebring, Florida,” explains Clint Iams, executive director of NAFCA. “This project will enable our students to implement their training into a typical installation. There will be utilities to work around, gates to appropriately install, and weather to content with. While difficult, this project will provide our students the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals and certifiable experts, resulting in a truly remarkable experience and increased benefit when returning home.” One of the greatest benefits of the fence school is the real-world installation of various fence projects led by industry professionals with a combined 450+ years of experience.

The classes planned for 2024 include: • Chain link – 70’ or 6’ high chain link fence with access gate • Farm and ranch – construct several sections of coated high tensile fence with a hydraulic pounder • PVC – repair 6’ high vinyl fence damaged by a hurricane, install 60’ of new fence • Blueprints – review basics of blueprints and generating materials required • Wood – 50’ of 6’ high dog ear solid fence with 5’ gate

Anviz Introduces Anviz One, An All-in-One Solution Designed to Address Security Concerns for All Levels of Education Anviz, a leading provider of professional and converged intelligent security solutions, has announced the launch of its all-in-one intelligent security solution for the education industry – Anviz One – bolstering the security infrastructure of public and private educational institutions from K-12 to university with lower upfront investment, stronger analytics, and simplified management. A one-stop system powered by a cloud infrastructure and Edge AI Server, Anviz One offers flexible and scalable options to address the diverse needs of schools aiming to build a complete security system. “A campus is not only a place where students thrive academically, but also a space where they live, socialize, and recreate. However, it is also susceptible to extreme violence that can threaten their safety and well-being. As a surveillance solution innovator, we aim to help schools of all levels upgrade security infrastructure with minimal cost and IT complexity. Anviz One is the one-stop solution that features industry-leading products, technical support, and maintenance services,

allowing educators to build complete systems that deliver the comprehensive surveillance coverage they need,” says David Huang, chief ecosystem officer of Anviz. According to Statista, the number of K-12 school shootings in the USA reached an unprecedented height in 2021 with 249 cases reported throughout the year, twice as many as the number in 2020 and five times the 2017 figure. As more educational institutions seek to strengthen their on-campus security, over 90% of public schools in the US had chosen security cameras as part of their safety measures by 2020. To boost the effectiveness of campus security surveillance against external dangers, Anviz One is equipped with AI cameras capable of identifying unauthorized vehicles and analyzing human movements, sending a prompt alert when a fallen person and fence climber is detected. The access control system, which works in conjunction with video surveillance and intelligent analytics, offers faster and safer communication, while the perimeter security system maximizes visibility

for detecting suspicious activities. The parking management application provided by Anviz One improves efficiency and safety through AI detection and reminders, as well as features such as blacklisting and whitelisting. For on-campus issues, Anviz One is integrated with an early warning system designed to combat incidents such as theft and bullying with efficiency and precision, helping to collect crucial evidence and empowering school guards to take preemptive actions to mitigate security concerns before they escalate. In addition, it can be also linked up to the school’s existing systems such as fire alarms, with the ability to send prompt alerts to school authorities and rescue responders when emergencies are spotted. While offering all-around protection to students and school employees, Anviz One provides a powerful and versatile student and personnel management system that verifies their identity to eliminate unauthorized entry and tracks their time and attendance. The management system helps schools create a welcoming and secure campus

environment with a solution that seamlessly blends into its surroundings, minimizing administration distractions for all and allowing them to focus on their central tasks. The system offers greater benefits to security operators who frequently encounter issues including cameras without PC software support, inflexible permission management, as well as missing features such as off-duty detection, and fire alarms, facilitating quicker risk identification and response. With Anviz One, the deployment of a whole-campus security system has never been easier. It is designed to lower costs and simplify hardware installments, with the support for WI-FI and PoE allowing the cameras and access control devices to achieve plug-and-play connection. The architecture of its edge server maximizes compatibility with the existing systems of a school, further reducing the steps and costs for system maintenance. Other features including multi-location monitoring, centralized management, flexible access, real-time notification, and cloud data backup allow schools to build powerful and versatile security surveillance to ensure safety for all. In addition, Anviz also offers professional services to optimize security operations and share experiences with the campus management team to shorten their learning curve during the system deployment. With it, small-tomedium educational institutions can quickly deploy a smart, robust security system on their premises with lower costs and technical bars that often hinder their efforts to enhance campus safety.

ANNUAL RECAP 2 0 2 3

Top of the Chain highlights those in the fencing, manufacturing and outdoor living industries who excel both on the job and off. They’ve found their passion and make a difference; whether it’s in their community or around the globe. Fence News is pleased to highlight the leaders we featured in 2023.

JANUARY | Sheryl McMahon, chief financial officer | Dandy Digger Sheryl McMahon’s late husband, Jim, founded Dandy Digger in the early 60s in Cathlamet, Washington. Prior to establishing the company, Jim was a fence contractor who developed a machine for his own use that could dig in all types of tough conditions and still be fast and agile on residential lawn jobs. Eventually these companies began to have him fabricate a digger of the same design he was using for their own use. In 1980, he built a manufacturing facility to further the design and fabrication of the Dandy Digger unit and its related equipment. Upon Jim’s death in 2018, Sheryl stepped into the leadership role, along with CEO-Manager Mike Willette, who has been with Dandy Digger for over 30 years. “The responsibility and in-depth commitment that is required to produce good and dependable equipment of this nature in our day and age is immense,” Sheryl says. “We take great pride in our Dandy Digger family of equipment owners and always try to build the professional fencer’s business. We always provide top notch customer service.” For more information, visit dandydigger.com. FEBRUARY | Shane Miller, CEO | American Wholesale Fenceworks and Mossy Oak Fence Shane Miller is head of two independent fencing companies located in Florida that work in tandem: American Wholesale Fenceworks and Mossy Oak Fence. Mossy Oak Fence was founded in 2008; they install all types of standard fences and gates, but it’s their custom work that sets them apart from the crowd. In 2018, he founded American Wholesale Fenceworks to have a dedicated team of experts focused on purchasing, inventory management, production and order fulfillment that would supply materials not only for Mossy Oak Fence, but many other fencing companies in Florida and around the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states. “As a true entrepreneur at heart, I love to build things,” Shane says. “It gives me a sense of purpose every day to wake up running and to see what else we can do as a team to move the company closer to achieving our goals. I’ve also embraced the challenge of building people and helping them take steps towards being the next generation of leaders within our organization.” “As a faith-based business, our values come from God,” he says. “I believe in doing the right thing in every circumstance and consistently modeling that for the team every day. For more information, visit awfenceworks.com and mossyoakfences.com. MARCH | Barry Marrs, CEO/owner | Security Contractor Services As part of the fencing industry for 55 years, Barry Marrs remains in the business because of his love for the fencing contractor. “I’ve had the great honor and privilege to work with a group of individuals throughout the fencing industry who exemplify the best of America,” Barry says. “Their honesty, integrity, and commitment to their customers, suppliers and employees is great to see and I’m honored to be part of that community.” After a career at Master Fence Fittings and Master Halco, he purchased Security Contractor Services in 2006. The company acquired Capitol Steel Products in 2007, which manufactures custom ornamental iron products. SCS started as a small wholesale manufacturer in 1973 based in San Jose, California and has grown into three divisions focused on four different markets. The wholesale division manufactures and distributes chain link fencing material to fencing contractors and the rental division handles temporary fencing to contractors around construction sites, special events and

18

DECEMBER 2023 | FENCE NEWS USA

repair sites from fires and accidents. In all, SCS/Capitol Steel have 10 operating units spread from Southern California to Seattle, Washington, serving the entire West Coast, Hawaii, and Alaska. “I think of myself as a conscientious manager focused on building the company,” Barry says. “I believe in setting a plan and allocating resources to achieve the plan while delegating daily responsibility to achieving the plan to my management team. I can’t think of anything I’d rather do than go to work each day and tackle the challenges and opportunities the fencing industry provides.” For more information, visit scsfence.com. APRIL | Simon Lee, president | Northstar Controls After working for several companies in the vehicle detector industry since the late 1970s, it was a natural step for Simon Lee to start his own company, Northstar Controls. “Although my degree is in engineering and I am still actively engaged in design and engineering, my interest has always been manufacturing and in maintaining consistent quality and constantly upgrading methods,” Simon explains. “This is the major reason that Northstar manufactures all products in-house.” After opening a small manufacturing facility in Tempe, Arizona, the increased sales volume from the first few years of business led him to a larger facility in Sarasota, Florida, in 2007. “Our emphasis on automation improves productivity,” he says. “Our workforce continues to expand in a measured way which allows the company to maintain quality while giving the capacity needed to meet the needs of our expanding market share.” For more information, visit northstarcontrols.com. MAY | Tatsuro “Tats” Kimura, president and CEO | Master Halco Surviving and thriving during the past few years due to the pandemic and supply chain shortages are accomplishments worth celebrating. Tatsuro “Tats” Kimura, president and chief executive officer with Master Halco, focused on customer service, employee retention, and in doing so, led the company to achieve an increase in sales despite the recent challenges. “We continually search for growth opportunities,” he says. “With the pandemic leading to more people spending time at home and in their backyards, it allowed us to clearly see the huge potential, not only in growing the fence business, but also entering into the decking and railing market as both product lines contribute to improving the outdoor living space experience.” Promoting a culture of excellence throughout the company is a priority. “We aim to nurture a service mindset to remain the preferred partner with our stakeholders,” he says. To learn more, visit masterhalco.com. JUNE | Kyle Guillot, chief operating officer | Fencing Supply Group Kyle began his career in the fencing industry at Merchants Metals, right out of college. Eventually, he was given the opportunity of branch manager in California. “Of all the roles I’ve had in my career, this one was the most impactful,” he says. “For us, our branches are where all the action happens and where we make the most difference for our customers. The lessons I learned in this role stick with me even today.” Today, as chief operating officer with Fencing Supply Group, his primary role is to support their 72 locations and 1,200 employees. “This industry and this company are filled with some of the best people I’ve ever been around. As we grow, I find myself surrounded by even more talented and genuinely nice people every day, it keeps me energized,” he says. For more information, visit fencingsupplygroup.com. JULY | Mary Cobb, president and CEO | J.C.Gury Mary Cobb, CEO of J.C. Gury, began working there part-time while in college. Fast forward a few years, and now she’s CEO of the company her father bought in 1971. A custom screen-printing sign manufacturer, J.C. Gury focuses mainly on outdoor signs and decals, doing business nationwide as well as Canada and Mexico. “We still do things the old-fashioned way; when you call our customer service department, you talk with a real person who can give you answers and assist with your order,” Mary says. “Every customer is important no matter how small or large the order.” “My focus is to keep J.C. Gury running like a well-oiled machine, as my father did. I’m proud to carry on his legacy,” Mary says. For details, visit jcgury.com. AUGUST | Ron DeMedio, co-owner | International Gate Devices A born entrepreneur, Ron DeMedio has a passion for business. “I knew I wanted to control my own destiny,” he says. International Gate Devices, located in Folsom, Pennsylvania, is a single source supplier for bolt on and weld on track systems for cantilever slide gates. One of the business lessons he’s learned is that perfection is the greatest obstacle to productivity. “Perfection has no place in the world of entrepreneurship,” Ron says. “You must weigh the opportunity cost of letting perfectionism slow you down.” He enjoys the independence of working at his own company. “I love Monday mornings,” Ron says. “That’s when things start to happen.” To learn more, visit slidegate.net. continued on p 20 FENCENEWS.COM | DECEMBER 2023

SEPTEMBER | Loren “Digger” Graber, president and chief visionary officer | Digger Specialties Digger Specialties manufactures, produces and sells vinyl and aluminum fencing and gates; they also manufacture railing and columns under the Westbury and PolyRail brands. They have six plants in five states: Indiana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia and Missouri. The company began as a custom bending process for vinyl frames for various furniture applications. In 1984, Digger Specialties was established for the sole purpose of manufacturing and selling vinyl fencing and related maintenance-free products. “Where there is no vision, there is no future,” Digger says. “I believe that by using the title of chief visionary officer, it constantly reminds me to use the gifts God gave me. Visionaries create, that is what large organizations tend to overlook.” For more information, visit diggerspecialties.com. October | Ted Eysenbach, general manager | Stephens Pipe and Steel With 34 years as general manager of Stephens Pipe and Steel, Ted Eysenbach brings experience, wisdom and a healthy dose of good humor to the table. “People would be surprised to know how much fun it is. At SPS, we have laughed for decades, all the while growing the business to where it is today,” Ted says. Everything at SPS is geared toward making sure the customer has what they need, when they need it. As a result, they have grown to 18 well-stocked locations. “I hope that as we grow older, we realize the difference between what is important and what is just noise. Turns out, it’s mostly noise,” Ted says. “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” To learn more, visit spsfence.com. NOVEMBER | John Eichenlaub, president | Fence and Mechanical with Wheatland With 20 years in the fencing industry, John Eichenlaub’s resume is filled with a variety of skills. Today, he’s president of Fence and Mechanical with Wheatland, a subsidiary of Zekelman Industries. His constant driver is a commitment to excellence within the fencing industry. “I had the opportunity of manufacturing security products following the events of 9/11, driven heavily by applications in the military and homeland defense,” John explains. “I specifically came to Wheatland because I admire Barry Zekelman,” he says. “I had the opportunity to spend a couple of hours with him as a customer. He listened intently to my concerns and expressed a proactive response. I knew I wanted to be part of his team and continue to believe in his vision.” “Teamwork is required to build success,” he says. “Our industry is focused on solving problems. We attack problems and opportunities at the installation level and from the customer’s point of view. This involves listening to the customer, something all of us work toward in fencing.” To learn more, visit wheatland.com.

ALL-O-MATIC to Introduce New Circuit Board and Showcase other Revolutionary Products ALL-O-MATIC INC will proudly introduce the cutting-edge ALL-BLDC PRO circuit board to attendees at booth #1455 at FENCETECH 2024. Designed to elevate gate automation, the ALL-BLDC PRO Control Board sets a new standard for convenience and efficiency. Equipped with a user-friendly USB connector, this advanced design allows seamless error log retrieval and on-site firmware updates, streamlining diagnostics and ensuring hassle-free firmware integration. By integrating three user-friendly push buttons alongside the LCD display in place of potentiometers for the E.R.D. and TIMER settings, users can now make precise sensitivity adjustments ranging from 0% to 100%. Additionally, the extended auto-close timer range of 1 to 120 seconds grants users unparalleled control over gate closure. These are just a glimpse of the outstanding features. In addition, this will be the first opportunity for many attendees to witness ALLO-MATIC’s revolutionary MACH-PRIME Column Mount Swing Gate Operator and the enhanced TORO24 Control Board. The MACHPRIME was specifically engineered to overcome the challenges posed by gates with wide columns, where conventional actuator arms encounter installation constraints. The ALL-O-MATIC team can’t wait for the opportunity to connect with attendees in person, showcase our latest innovations, and reveal a SURPRISE they have planned. FENCETECH 2024

DAC Industries to Feature New Security Kit DAC’s first time attending FENCETECH was in Nashville in 1986, the company’s second year in business. “What started 37 years ago as two sizes of the Auto-Latch and an introduction to the industry, has grown and evolved into a showcase for our new and innovative products,” says Jen Klassen, DAC co-owner. “FENCETECH is always an exciting time to interact with leaders in the industry and to see the advancements taking place.” DAC panic hardware kits debuted 20 years ago at FENCETECH 2003 in Nashville, and they have progressed with the industry ever since. Advancements over the years have ranged from enhancing security, improving building codes, and elevating technology; all have had an effect on how gates are designed and built. “Our company was founded by fence installers familiar with problems and challenges that can arise on site, and our product line has grown over the years by recognizing those problems and working on a solution to make installation easier,” says Klassen. “The smaller size of our business allows us to innovate and produce products quickly, which allows us to create customized items. It also enables us to make

modifications and design components to translate door hardware to the fencing world. We are excited to showcase some of the most recent results in January, which include an adjustable mounting bracket for electric strike as well as a lock box with integrated pull.” New this year for DAC is a security kit constructed for standalone keyed and combination locks. These components are designed to work with a variety of leading manufacturer’s locks and take the hassle out of piecing together components and fabrication in the field. Kits include an adjustable receiver with gate stop, pre-drilled weld-in lock box, adjustable plate, latch and lever guard. These components are designed to enhance security and give the gate a finished, professional look. These Rapid Gate Bundles are designed to take the guesswork out of installation and save time (therefore money) out in the field. Visit booth #1119 to try out the Rapid Gate Bundle and learn about other DAC Industries products at FENCETECH 2024. Information is also available at dacindustries.com.

Little Beaver to Feature Mechanical Earth Drills Check out booth 819 at FENCETECH 2024 to see Little Beaver featuring the Mechanical Earth Drill. “Little Beaver’s Mechanical Earth Drills offer a safe and productive solution for one-man hole digging applications,” explains Little Beaver President Joe Haynes. Featuring a 360-rpm operating speed, the drills are faster and produce cleaner holes than similar competitive units, while the compact design allows access to areas unreachable by skid steermounted augers. Built to be reliable, powerful and lightweight, the Mechanical drills are ideal for a variety of industries, including rental centers, fence and sign installers, landscape and building contractors, and parks and recreation departments. The Mechanical Earth Drill is available with either a 5.5 or 8-horsepower engine and is mounted on 8- of 10-inch semi-pneumatic tires, respectively. Both versions offer a small footprint for easy access in any area and can be used on lawns, golf course greens and other delicate surfaces without causing damage. The mechanical drills feature a steel torque tube that allows operators to use large diameter augers without fear of dangerous kickback. In addition to increasing operator safety, the torque tube provides easier drilling, reducing operator effort and fatigue. To enhance operator safety further, all models feature a centrifugal clutch. If the drill encounters a buried object or the auger is overloaded, the clutch

automatically slips to protect the operator from serious injury and the drive cable and transmission gears from damage. Little Beaver offers two kits that allow users to easily convert its mechanical drills into horizontal boring machines. The sidewalk auger kit includes a 5-foot extension with a universal joint and a 5-foot auger to make it ideal for drilling as much as four feet under sidewalks. The driveway kit is for applications like plumbing, electrical and water lines. It includes a water swivel and achieves horizontal drilling distances up to 40 feet. “High-quality features that reduce maintenance and extend life include heavy-duty transmissions with cooling fins for quick heat dissipation and improved longevity,” explains Haynes. “We powder coat all steel features to enhance strength and durability.” A universal auger, standard with Little Beaver mechanical earth drills, makes it easy to change out tips for specific surface types. A hard-faced tip, suitable for typical lawn and garden dirt and sandy loam-type soils is also standard. The optional heavy-duty rock tip works well in rocky soils. “For the toughest surfaces, including hard clay, asphalt and frozen ground, the

optional carbide-blade tip is ideal,” he says. Little Beaver also offers easy-to-change, snap-on augers in 36- and 42-inch lengths and diameters ranging from 1.5 to 16-inches. Snap-on auger extensions are also available. “Many optional features allow end-users to customize their drills further,” Haynes says. For example, 10-inch pneumatic wheels, which are standard on the MDL-8B and mDL-8H, are an option on the MDL-5B and MDL-5H units. To protect the engine, steel roll cages are available for all models. Another option, a specially designed ricksha carrier, features large, 20-inch semi-pneumatic wheels, a convenient pull handle and transmission cradle for enhanced mobility. “There is a lot to this machine,” Haynes says. “That’s why we’re excited to feature it at FENCETECH 2024. We invite everyone to stop by our booth and check it out. We’re available for any questions.” For more information, visit littlebeaver.com.

FENCETECH 2024

Fence Leader Provides Suicide Prevention Training Educational Workshop Planned for FENCETECH As an Army veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan, Shawn Holland is too familiar with the anxiety and mental health issues that can sometimes plague soldiers. He has initiated the Suicide Awareness and Prevention Training, free training for leaders and employees of high-stress jobs. The training is in partnership with Operation Angel Wing, a non-profit organization that targets the individual needs of American veterans, first responders and their families suffering from the devastating effects of post-traumatic stress. Holland, vice president of Seegars Fence in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, served 10-and-a-half years on active duty as a combat engineer. He left active duty in 2016 and continues to serve in the Army Reserves as a civil affairs officer in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was asked to co-speak with two other gentlemen at the American Fence Association mid-year conference earlier this year. Following the presentation, the association president, Bobby Batchelor, who is also a partner with Holland at Seegars Fence Company, asked him to participate in a veteran’s interest initiative they were planning. “I felt providing an effective suicide awareness and prevention training would benefit our

veterans,” explains Holland, “and go beyond that by educating the business owners, supervisors and managers and help them become aware of what veterans may be going through and provide tools and resources for them to effectively assist them.” Holland has experienced the mental stress that can be common in veterans. “I have absolutely had to deal with anxiety, and I give thanks to God for providing me with a sense of peace,” he says. “Unfortunately, I know many friends who continue to deal with this. I’ve had to physically remove a pistol from a fellow soldier’s hand who wanted to commit suicide. I have had three other soldiers and one cadet tell me they were going to commit suicide. Providing others with tools to show the warning signs of suicide is important to me.” An educational workshop is planned for FENCETECH ’24 on this topic, to let others in the fencing industry know about this endeavor. “Hopefully, other AFA chapters will bring it back to their communities and respective regions,” Holland says. “I hope that over the next year, the chapter presidents are able to offer this training and spread the tools and resources across the industry and Country.”

In addition to the suicide prevention training, Holland and Seegars Fence Company formed the Disabled American Veteran Fence Initiative. “When a disabled veteran is given a service dog, the government does not provide a fence for them, so our company installs a fence at no charge. It is a small way for us to give back,” explains Holland. “On the day of installation, I shut down my shop, and everyone helps. My receptionist, office manager, estimators and staff put on gloves, and we all install the fence. I cook lunch on my grill in the veteran’s yard and have my staff chaplain pray for the family, the dog, the event and our company. It has been well received in the community and it gives us an honorable way to give back in the community.” For more information, visit seegarsfence.com.

CASE STUDY

A Safer, Better Game Experience: In-Line Backstop Netting Project at Sunset Park With a planned renovation of the high school baseball complex at Sunset Park in Kimberly, Wisconsin, facility planners were looking for a backstop solution to work with their block wall. The new wall would serve as the base of the backstop, but they really wanted something to enhance the viewing experience for spectators. They sought a solution that would not only give fans a better view of the game, but one that would improve fan safety so friends and family could watch without worry. The backstop needed to be functional, but it also needed to look good. Beacon’s Engineered In-Line Backstop Netting

checked all the boxes for the project planners. The clean lines of the overall backstop allows their classy brick wall to take center stage. With just four poles supporting the 60’ x 27’ high net panels, the sight lines from the seating areas were a massive improvement. The overall size of the netting extended down the first and third base lines. That extended foul line netting — in addition to being much higher than the previous fence — greatly reduces the risk of fan injury from foul balls. Park administrators said Beacon’s “ability to perfectly integrate the backstop netting with their new concrete block wall was critical. The smooth

Before

coordination of the entire project was exactly what we needed.” The Beacon Projects Team worked closely with Kimberly representatives, as well as their contractors, by providing complete shop drawings and frequent consultation to ensure the project would exceed customer expectations. The wood screws are designed for building wooden decks and fences, with a T-17 auto-pilot tip, dual-action auger threads, a diamond-file shank and a patent pending wedge-lock head. They can be used in both treated and non-treated lumber. The composite screws are suited for composite and PVC decking, with aggressive saw teeth, a T-17 saw tip, and hi-lo threads with an undercut head – to speed installation and achieve the ideal finish. The wood and composite screws feature T-25 and T-20 star drive heads, respectively, for a secure grip when installing. Both sets of screws are available in multiple colors, allowing installers to color-match to the deck material and provide a clean, uninterrupted look.

Turning a Tragedy into a Teachable Moment Promoting gate safety measures

In December of 2019, a tragedy occurred in the Quanbeck family when their youngest son Alex was killed during recess at his school in California. A rolling gate that was adjacent to the playground failed and fatally injured him. His family turned their grief toward creating good and preventing future tragedies and created The Hummingbird Alliance in his name. Bluff City Fence in Memphis, Tennessee, is committed to gate safety awareness. Alex’ story is shared on their website, along with gate safety practices. “Our industry offers many options for gate safety, from pools to residential and commercial applications,” says Shane Yarbrough, partner and general manager with Bluff City Fence Company. “The installers need to educate themselves to the standards and then to the options offered by manufacturers to be the professionals in our field for the standards to protect the customer and public from any incidents or accidents. The most important thing is to educate yourself because if you don’t know, you are leaving a door wide open to liability or even worse, someone getting hurt or killed. If you don’t know the standards and proper technique, then reach out for guidance. There are many well-rounded and educated professionals in our industry that are more than willing to help you if you ask.” Contractors should know local and state codes and laws before proceeding with an installation job. “The simplest way to look at this is to take a step back and look at the big picture,” explains Yarbrough. Ask yourself, ‘What if this broke? What if that fell? What if that wheel came off? What if a child walked into that corner?’ Once you do that and have answers to those questions, then you can proceed. An installer must look at each situation differently because each job is different. When

IGD

a customer calls, they are calling because they want a professional installation. We, in this industry, are the professionals.” Bluff City Fence advocates using the following ate safety products for added protection: • Safety chain welded to the top of the gate and hinge post to keep the gate from falling if the hinge were to break. • Catch post on all sliding gates, such as v-track, rolo gates, aluminum track, and cantilever gates. This is used as a failsafe if any welds were to break, or wheels were to slide down. The catch post keeps the gate from falling all the way to the ground. • Photo Eyes / Through Beam emit a beam of light along the gate’s path. This light is used to detect the presence or absence of equipment, people, or other items crossing through the gate’s path. If any of these are detected, the gate will either stop or not move at all. • Chain link screening on commercial gates is recommended where there will be a gap greater than 2 ¼” measured from the ground up to six feet, to prevent a 2 ¼” diameter sphere from passing through the opening anywhere in the gate. This screening will keep people from reaching through the gate and causing entrapment. “As I have grown through the industry, I have full belief that our gates and the operators as well as access that control them should be installed by a certified installer and be regulated by some type of inspection process,” Yarbrough says. “In various states, some of this has started to take place, as it should. We need the ‘measure twice, cut once’ practice done nationwide. There needs to be guided accountable controls in place that hold us to the standards expected on each install in gates, fence, operators, and access. We are one of the only few industries that are trades, and we are a trade, that don’t do this. We must become the professionals as an industry, and we do that through education, certifications, and regulations.” To learn more about Alex Quanbeck and The Hummingbird Alliance, visit thehummingbirdalliance.com. Early Bird by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP Executive vice president, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute 2022 Inductee, American Fence Association Hall of Fame

I was getting my 2024 calendar up to date because I wanted to begin planning for the annual CLFMI Members Briefing that is held at FENCETECH each year. I looked at my February calendar and I didn’t see it there, where it usually is. I figured, well, they’ve done March a few times, so I guess that’s when we’re having it this year. Nope. I had to go back into January on my calendar to find it, January 22-26, 2024, in Nashville. Is it just me or does it seem early this year? It’s been quite a while since FENCETECH was held in January (maybe the last time we were in Nashville?). Anyway, I realized I better get started right away if I’m going to be prepared to make the event worthwhile for CLFMI, and for myself. Some of you may be wondering, “What’s so hard about preparing for FENCETECH, unless your company has a big booth to get ready for the trade show?” I think it very important to take some time to be prepared for making it both enjoyable and profitable. Here are some suggestions for ways to make FENCETECH ’24 the kickoff to a great 2024 for your company. 1) Create a picture of where you want your company to be a year from now. It’s one thing to go down the rows of all the exhibitors, trying to find a new fence product or a new installation tool/technique. Then, of course, you can spend the next few weeks (or months) trying to see if it’s something that might work for you in 2024. Nothing wrong with that, but what if it means a big investment that wasn’t in your budget for next year? Do you now have to go back and “sell” that new idea to your company’s managers or partners? Come to Nashville with a clear set of company goals and plans. Work with your team to come up with a detailed description of what a great 2024 would look like. Start your Nashville experience by seeking out the people, the companies, the

64

DECEMBER 2023 | FENCE NEWS USA

educational programs, and meetings that will fill in the blanks in your plan. THEN you can stroll around the floor looking for the next market, or partner, or suppler, etc. Come to FENCETECH with a purpose. 2) Don’t just meet people and collect business cards – create new relationships. Not everyone in the fence business is comfortable “working a room.” FENCETECH isn’t about gladhanding and partying (well, actually, it is – I mean that’s not ALL it is about). If you have others from your company attending, get together each afternoon/evening and share your contacts, new ideas, potential customers, etc. Don’t wait until you get back on Monday and then try to retrieve information, impressions, etc. It won’t happen. Follow up with leads on new resources, new partners, potential employees, etc., should start while you are still in Nashville. Note: Yes, I know “collecting business cards” is old fashioned in a world where you can pull out your phone and put contact information into your system in a few seconds. But think about it – are you going to remember what that person looked like, exactly what your conversation was, etc.? Here is a simple tip – never collect a business card or upload contact information you get at FENCETECH into your smart phone without adding at least one word to your listing (yes, you must write it on the business card.) That one word could make the difference between this contact ignoring your follow up contact or responding to it. That one word (or short phrase) is something the person said to you when you met. Then, when you follow up (in any format) you have the words “when we talked in Nashville you mentioned….” and you add the exact word(s) the person used. By doing that, you tell the person you listened to them when you first met them. It sends a signal you’ll do that again if you wind up working together. All things being equal, people want to do business with people they know and trust. FENCETECH gives you a terrific chance to establish both the knowing (meeting) and trusting (listening) right there. 3) Track your contacts. Find out if FENCETECH was really a valuable investment for you. A lot of people come to FENCETECH because they enjoy being around their fence industry counterparts for a few days. Many others attend because they

are active in their AFA Chapter, and this is a logical extension of that activity. However, a great many people attending FENCETECH will have to go back to their business on Monday and start answering the big questions – was it worth it? Was it worth spending thousands of dollars (or, in the case of exhibitors and sponsors, perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars)? Was it worth taking a week off from other work that needs to be done? Was it worth taking several other team members with us, or could one or two people have represented the company just as well? The “value” of FENCETECH can only be determined by two things – time and effort. The time element is important. Don’t judge FENCETECH ‘24 by how much business you gained in 2024. Sometimes it takes months or even years for a contact/relationship started at FENCETECH to result in some tangible benefit for your company. That’s why it is so important to keep careful records of your contacts and where they originated. If one company you meet in Nashville becomes a valued customer in 2025 or beyond, then FENCETECH ’24 becomes a much better investment. You must have patience. The other element of getting value from FENCETECH is effort. Keep working the room, working the leads, and working on ways to use the takeaways from Nashville to build your business this year.

As executive vice president of Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute for 38+ years, Mark Levin is also an author and avid promoter of the fence industry. He believes in the successful leadership qualities he promotes, including listening, delegating, consensus building, communications and effective decisionmaking. Hydro Excavation: The Safest Way to Dig Fence Post Holes

When you consider installing a fence, post-hole diggers or an auger may come to mind as your go-to digging tools. It is easy to assume that excavation services are reserved for larger projects. However, hydrovac excavation, which uses water to excavate, can assist with digging the necessary holes for your fence posts, making this approach a safer alternative. According to Megan Rutkoski, owner of Merut Construction, the advanced technology of hydrovac trucks enables excavation projects in certain situations to be completed with less risk, labor, and time. She explains that hydro excavation is a technique that uses high-pressure water to loosen soil and facilitate digging. “The hydrovac truck then suctions the wet soil and slurry into a mounted tank, either stored for later backfilling or transported to a designated disposal location. Using a hydrovac to dig holes for fence posts is safer around underground utilities in the area and removes dirt from the job site at the same time for a cleaner and more efficient project," says Rutkoski. Vacuum excavation trucks are versatile and can be used for various purposes. This excavation method can be used to dig for utility poles and fence posts by quickly and accurately excavating the correct diameter and depth of the hole. Certain types of hydrovac trucks are also equipped with air knife excavation abilities. This method of excavation utilizes highly compressed air instead of water to break up the ground soil before siphoning it through a vacuum hose with the unique ability to backfill dry soil. The hydrovac or airvac excavation process excavates holes without causing damage to the surrounding areas. Rutkoski says vacuum excavation offers a wide range of capabilities and can be used in a variety of different applications and industries including utilities, oil and gas, telecommunications, municipalities, construction, and engineering. She describes three situations in which this excavation process would offer many benefits: UNDERGROUND UTILITY CONFLICTS Many fencing projects are affected by the challenge of working on, in, near, or around underground cables, lines, and pipes. “Without an adequate focus on safe digging practices, these jobs have the potential to be both incredibly dangerous and expensive, as everyone in the industry knows,” says Rutkoski.

To mitigate these risks, it’s critical to locate underground assets and services before digging your fence post holes. Test pitting and potholing are minimally invasive procedures to examine underground conditions through a series of small excavation holes dug via vacuum excavation or manual shoveling methods. “Vacuum excavation is implemented by applying highly pressurized streams of water or air to soften the ground soil and displace it from the test pits or potholes through high-suction vacuum equipment,” she explains. “The benefit of vacuum excavation is its ability to move hard or rocky ground without accidentally puncturing or harming the assets below. Test pitting and potholing provides an opportunity to access the most precise information on the location of underground utilities using visual confirmation, and the vacuum extraction method affords the best possible assurance before beginning a fencing job.” COMPLICATED LANDSCAPES Vacuum excavation is the best option for remote excavation on sites that are confined or difficult to reach for hand or mechanical digging, as vacuum excavation equipment can be located far from the actual project site. When a job requires remote digging, workers can attach a hose and work up to 400 feet away from the vac truck. For all those difficult-to-reach places, remote digging is an ideal solution. This method of digging reduces the impact on natural environments and landscaping, minimizing the need for site restoration. COLD WEATHER Mechanical excavators face a unique set of problems while operating in wintry weather, as the frozen ground is much harder to dig through than when the temperature is warmer. This makes excavation difficult and time-consuming. High-powered coil heaters on hydrovac trucks enable them to excavate in cold weather. Even in severe winter weather, heated pressurized water has the strength to cut through the frozen ground and can be used to excavate through any depth of ground frost. Annual Arlington National Cemetery Project Is Another Success

The North American Fence Contractors Association, NAFCA, completed their annual Arlington National Cemetery Service Project, the 11th since its inception. NAFCA has a long history of giving back at Arlington by replacing and restoring damaged fencing at our nation’s cemetery with new material donated by members. Volunteers provide the labor. This year, there were 23 volunteers from 14 different companies across the United States and Canada. Clint Iams, NARCA Executive Director, says this year’s project was a little more challenging than in previous years. “Unfortunately, Arlington National Cemetery has faced an increase in vandalism attempts in recent months. To enhance security, all new fences surrounding the Cemetery need to be eight feet tall. As we all know, installing an eight-foot-tall fence is a touch more difficult than a four- or six-foot project but our volunteers were up for the task.” While all of our volunteers this year were incredibly hard workers, Iams says one, Tom Prosalik of AFSCO Fence Inc. in Langtham, New York, stood out. “Tom has been in the fence industry since 1975 – five years before I was born. Throughout the 11-hour day, Tom never wavered, complained or became irritable. The 2023 project was difficult, as we all know fence building can be, yet Tom kept the atmosphere jovial and light, sharing his skill set while being appreciative of the task at hand: to protect one of our nation’s most cherished and reverent places. Tom’s example is one we can all aspire to emulate. In short, I strive to be like Tom, and you should too. The fence industry is a better place because of people like him.” Learn more about the project in the blog section of 4nafca.com.

SET THE STAGE FOR A SUCCESSFUL 2024 WITH AN END-OF-YEAR FINANCIAL REVIEW

As the end of the year approaches, small business owners are presented with a crucial opportunity to reflect, evaluate, and strategically plan for the upcoming fiscal year. Conducting a comprehensive end-of-year financial review is not only essential for assessing the past year’s performance, but also for paving the way to a more successful future. Business management experts suggest several key steps for an effective review process: Reflect on Achievements and Challenges The end of the fiscal year serves as an ideal time to reflect on the business’s accomplishments and challenges from the past year. Review the goals set at the beginning of the year and assess whether they were met. Identify achievements, areas where the business excelled, and the challenges it encountered. This will provide invaluable insights for strategic planning. Assess Financial Performance Conduct a thorough review of the business’s financial statement, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements to gauge the financial health of the company. Look for patterns, trends, and anomalies that can offer a deeper understanding of the business’s financial performance over the past year.

CASE Launches Subcompact Product Lines CASE Construction Equipment is launching an all-new lineup of mini track loaders and small articulated loaders, giving small contractors construction-grade muscle to knock down more jobs faster and more profitably than ever before. The new product lines from CASE highlight how contractors can overcome labor challenges and get more done with right-sized machines. The new stand-on TL 100 mini track loader will offer crews a powerful attachment platform in a compact, easy-to-maneuver and easyto-transport machine. The new line of six small articulated loaders, including a telescopic now available and an all-electric model that will launch in early 2024, will give contractors a wide variety of options and power ranges to meet their unique challenges. Both product lines bring a new level of power and flexibility to small machines to contractors can tackle more jobs with less manual labor. “We’re continuing to transform the way work gets done with new, smaller machines that leverage all the weight and power of a global, full-line manufacturer that’s more than 180-years strong,” says Ryan Anderson, product manager, MTL/SAL, CASE Construction Equipment. “The new mini track loaders and small articulated loaders will help contractors of any size reduce tedious labor, minimize their footprint and upsize the amount of work can get done with a pickup truck and a trailer.” CASE will release six small articulated loaders to help contractors of all sizes meet their toughest challenges on tight jobsites. With power ranges from 24 to 74 horsepower, operating capacity from 1,500 to more than 3,000 pounds, options for diesel or fully electric, and a full range of more than 110 powerful attachments, CASE small articulated loaders are some of the most versatile machines on the market. “When it comes to attachments on our small articulated loaders, we’re giving contractors a whole arsenal of tools to handle almost any task,” says Anderson. “But the versatility doesn’t stop there. We designed these machines with common industry couplers so contractors can also leverage a wide range of CASE and non-CASE attachments.” Several CASE small articulated loaders, including the SL 12TR model, feature a telescopic arm to provide an extra-long reach for loading trucks or moving material into tough-to-reach places. And where lifting capacity is a priority, CASE will offer more rugged models with traditional Z-bar loader linkage that can handle heavier loads. CASE is also launching the all-electric SL22EV that delivers the same power as its diesel counterparts and can be fully charged in one hour. This electrified machine provides a low noise, zero-emissions solution for getting work done in a broader range of environments – whether it’s indoor work where air quality is paramount or a close-quarter residential neighborhood where contractors need to keep noise levels down. “We’ve designed this new generation of machines with intention and practical innovation so that contractors of any size can crush it on the jobsite and grow their business,” says Anderson. CASE Construction Equipment is a global full-line manufacturer of construction equipment that combines generations of manufacturing expertise with practical innovation. They are also committed to giving back by dedicating time, resources and equipment to building communities, including disaster response, infrastructure investment, and non-profit organizations that provide housing and resources for those in need. by Tony Thornton President, Thornton Fence Consulting Group

Standard Specification for Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Polyolefin and Other Polymer-Coated Steel Chain Link Fence Fabric The standard specification for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyolefin and other polymer-coated steel chain link fence fabric is typically provided by industry organizations and government agencies to ensure the quality, durability, and performance of chain-link fence fabric coating. One such organization that provides standards for various materials and products is ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials. These standards include detailed information about the materials, manufacturing processes, and performance requirements for PVC coated chainlink fence fabric. They may cover aspects such as the dimensions, coatings, strength, and corrosion resistance of the fabric. As an example, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyolefin and other polymer-coated steel chain link fence fabric has a designation like “ASTM F668 – XX”. The “XX” would be replaced with the year of the standard’s latest revision. Testing methods for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyolefin and other polymer-coated steel chain link fence fabric, as outlined in standards or similar documents, are essential to ensure that the coating and fabric meets the specified requirements for quality, performance, and durability. Some common testing methods that may be associated with such standards include: Wire Diameter Measurement: This involves measuring the diameter of the steel wire used in the chain-link fabric. Wire diameter is an important factor affecting the fabric’s strength and durability. Mesh Size Measurement: The size of the mesh openings in the fabric is critical and should be measured according to specified dimensions. Tensile Strength Testing: This test determines the maximum load a chain-link fabric can withstand without breaking. It ensures that the fabric meets the required strength standards. 76

DECEMBER 2023 | FENCE NEWS USA

Coating Thickness Measurement: The thickness of the coating on the steel wire is important for corrosion resistance and uniformity. Coating thickness can be measured using several different methods. Adhesion of Coating: To ensure that the coating adheres properly to the steel wire, tests may be conducted to assess the adhesion strength. Bend Test: This test evaluates the fabric’s ability to withstand bending without significant damage or cracking. Impact Resistance Test: To ensure that the fabric can withstand impacts without breaking or deforming excessively, impact resistance testing may be performed. Elongation Test: This test measures the amount of elongation or stretching that the fabric can withstand before failure.

Pullout Test for Ties and Lacing Wire: This test assesses the strength of ties and lacing wires used to connect the fabric to posts and rails. These testing methods ensure that polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyolefin and other polymercoated steel chain link fence fabric meets the specified standards and will perform as expected in terms of strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion. The specific methods and requirements can vary depending on the standard being followed, so it’s essential to refer to the relevant standard document for detailed information on testing procedures. To obtain the most current and detailed information, it is advisable to check the ASTM website or consult the relevant industry association or government agency responsible for setting and enforcing these standards. Manufacturers and contractors often use these standards as a reference to ensure the quality and safety of chain-link fencing materials and installations.

Coating Integrity Test: A test to check the uniformity and integrity of the coating, looking for areas with insufficient or no coating. Salt Spray Testing: This test exposes the fabric to a salt spray environment to assess its resistance to corrosion. Weathering Test: Evaluates the fabric’s performance under various weather conditions over time, including exposure to sunlight, rain, and temperature fluctuations. Chemical Resistance Testing: Evaluates the fabric’s resistance to chemical exposure, especially if it will be installed in environments with corrosive substances.

Tantimber’s Thermowood Products Stand Up in Environmental Testing Tantimber, a global manufacturer of ThermoWood products, released an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which details the results of an intensive life cycle assessment (LCA) conducted by Imnera Sustainability Consulting. The LCA study shows the environmental impacts of the company’s Thermowood manufacturing process and other life cycle stages. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an internationally standardized methodology (ISO 14040) that helps quantify the environmental impacts related to goods and services. The LCA considers the cradle-togate and through-to-the-end-of-life, or grave, assessment. The cradle-to-grave measurement of the Tantimber Thermowood assessment included kiln-dried timber receiving, stacking, Thermowood treatment, profiling and finishing, use, disposal, and benefits beyond

the grave stages. Tantimber’s cradle-to-gate greenhouse gases were rated at a negative result of -653 kilograms of CO2 eq. per cubic meter due to the product’s biogenic carbon content. Additionally, cradle-tograve greenhouse gas emissions were calculated as 377 kg CO2 eq per cubic meter. “We are pleased with the independent assessment of Tantimber Thermowood manufacturing process,” says Yakup Kayatas, CEO of Tantimber. “Our building professional partners have the added benefit of stocking, selling, building, and specifying proven sustainable, low environmental impact wood products with confidence.” Learn more at tantimber.com.
