ACCESS CONTROL/GATE OPERATORS/ PANIC EXITS

UTILIZING automatic yet secured entrances and exits are part of our way of life. Latches, lighting, loops and more are components that are critical to the operations and provide user-friendly ways to enhance security and ease-of-use. In this section, leading manufacturers and suppliers of these components share new options and techniques for helping the customer have a successful experience.

Access Control System Considerations Choosing an access control system for the first time can be intimidating for property owners, managers, and homeowners alike. Today’s market is full of different system types, features, and prices. While that’s an advantage, the options can feel overwhelming, and contractors can play a big role in helping their customers make decisions.

Access control systems help property owners/managers verify and approve who enters their property and areas within the property. Investing in an access control system is a significant step to improving the security of their spaces. Knowing what to implement can save them costly purchasing mistakes. According to Tim Pfeiffer, with PTR Control Systems in Atlanta, Georgia, Access control has evolved considerably over time. “Not long ago, mechanical locks and human vigilance were the standards. Current solutions provide features beyond allowing and denying access. They allow property owners to optimize security and track traffic through their buildings and exterior spaces.” Pfeiffer says the client’s budget is the first consideration. “However, you also want to make a choice that is flexible enough to revisit if they want or need additional features added on later.” Access control systems work with doors, gates, and other physical variables separating different spaces. Choices include telephone and digital entry, card reader, FOB Systems, and vehicle ID Systems. This information is sent over to an access control panel for verification against an access list after which the door or gate gets unlocked for the user to gain access. Newer technologies such as retina scanner door access control systems are starting to be implemented as well.

Access Control System Considerations, continued from p8

Automated gates are obviously a key factor in access control. Pfeiffer says the main types of automatic gates used for commercial and residential settings are slide gates, swing gates, and barrier arms, each with its own unique features.

SWING GATES Swing gates are the most common gate style in either single or dual configuration. The main concern in either case is that the driveway entrance must be wide enough for access by a fire truck. By most building codes, the minimum opening is 14 feet. That goes for the slide gate too.

SLIDE GATES Where the location doesn’t allow for a swing gate, slide gates are used. Slide gates have several mounting options. A track can be installed for the gate to roll on, a cantilever system can be used if the land surrounding the entry isn’t level, or an overhead track system can be installed.

BARRIER ARM A barrier arm is used when quicker access is desired and pedestrian traffic does not need to be controlled. A barrier arm can also be installed in conjunction with a swing or a slide gate. This configuration is often promoted to prevent tailgating into a property, but barrier arms also protect the gates themselves. A gate operator is a device designed to automatically and remotely open and close a wide variety of gate types. Pfeiffer says many operators are now able to add solar power and battery backup capabilities, and some offer cellular capabilities for diagnostic control. Most gate operators function by either using a key fob style remote control, or a card system that goes to an access panel. D&D Technologies Announces New Latch D&D Technologies, the leader in high-performance gate hardware, introduces the LokkLatch® Deluxe Series 3 to its versatile line of LokkLatch gate latches. The new LokkLatch Deluxe Series 3 is the premium privacy and security gate latch with simplified through-post installation, operates, locks and unlocks from both sides of the gate and is easy to install. Designed for commercial or residential applications, it is a complement to D&D’s popular LokkLatch® line that includes the general purpose LokkLatch and the LokkLatch 3 Plus residential security gate latch. “We are excited to introduce such an improved and innovative gate latch that features several advantages to make installation quick and easy,” says Jim Paterson, D&D’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “The improved strength of the new latch makes it perfect for the higher security and privacy applications.” With a new contemporary body design, the LokkLatch Deluxe Series 3 has a reinforced body and side fixing legs that are notably stronger and tougher than previous designs. The mounting bracket that secures the latch to the fence post also serves as the “fitting jig” (template) to provide significantly faster and easier installation. The innovative fitting jig naturally aligns the drill-hole on both sides of the post so that the hole is level at all times. Installation requires only one drilled hole. The snap-fit connector rod joins the two latch housings with a press-fit connection in the push-button to prevent rods from falling out during installation or dropping down the center of hollow posts, simplifying installation. The LokkLatch Deluxe Series 3 is available in black or white, keyed alike or keyed-different versions and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty. It can also be vertically and horizontally adjusted to ensure proper fit and 12

The Future of Connectivity

Lifestyles have become more connected as more products are created. We change how we live, move, work, and communicate. For access control professionals, this change is not one to fear but one of opportunity. “A smart, more connected world provides safe spaces in which to interact,” explains Jamie Carr, chief operating officer of Security Brands, Inc. As an access control manufacturer and supplier, Security Brands designs and builds connected devices that provide security and safety for our customers to conduct business. “As the industry moves into a more connected world, it is important to understand how this digital transformation will benefit our partners and customers,” says Carr. “While becoming more connected, we will be able to provide customers the ability to increase efficiency and productivity and provide higher quality services with increased functionality and convenience for customers.” What does connectivity look like in access control? A connected access control system means freedom. “It means a property manager, homeowner or business owner can program and monitor their access control system from anywhere in the world with a connection to the internet. It means the ability to troubleshoot a system without an installer or technician needing to travel to the site for initial inspection,” says Carr. “It means convenience for users who can use traditional credentials or newer soft keys and QR codes to access properties. The connected system keeps devices accessible for the users, installers, and property managers 24/7 from wherever they are.” How are connected devices changing access control? The name of the game is efficiency combined with convenience. Connected access control devices can be managed through a single software system which allows property managers and security officers an interconnected system to manage all access control assets. “Residents and users access gates and doors remotely through a convenient app to access entrances and doors throughout the property, and easily grants access to visitors. Smart credentials allow an additional level of security and convenience for residents and users,” says Chris Brown, President and Chief Executive Officer of Security Brands. Smart cameras are a smart home solution residents expect to be installed and available throughout properties. Smart cameras that are part of a complete access control system provide additional layers of security and efficiencies for security teams. These smart devices produce real time audit trails that can be accessed from anywhere to monitor activity on a property.

How can your business grow with the advances in technology? There is a lot of demand in the access control industry for connected devices. There is a term in the electronic world known as Internet of Things, or IoT. It refers to the network of physical objects that are embedded with sensors, software and other technologies to connect and exchange data with other devices and systems over the internet. Techjury,

14

AUGUST 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

an online service of business software reviews, reported that lnternet of Things (IoT) has the potential to generate $4 trillion to $11 trillion in economic value by 2025, and Reportlinker, an online market intelligence resource, shared that global loT security spending is expected to grow to $5.09 billion in 2022. Multi-tenant and multi-family properties are a perfect market in which to expand, as they continue to experience exponential growth. Parks Associates reports that consumers living in apartments are more likely to be technology adopters than those living in all broadband households. Smart access control systems are a necessary amenity for renters. A quality access control system will allow property managers to build trust and loyalty with residents. Additionally, the National Apartment Association found that renters are willing to pay higher rents when smart home devices and additional security are available. When combined with a smart home strategy, access control provides immense value for the property manager. How does Ascent fit into an access control system? “The Security Brands Ascent family of multitenant products are cellular, which means you don’t have to be in close proximity to a wi-fi router to operate a gate or door. Because their cellular, Ascent systems do not require trenching for long cable runs,” explains Carr.

“We’ve taken advantage of an ever-expanding cellular network to accomplish something with our Ascent family that a handful of years ago was unattainable. We connected access control systems over large distances to control and manage them from anywhere in the world with our Summit Control software,” Brown says. Cellular access control systems have a huge advantage over their hardwired cousins; no lengthy wire runs which gives you freedom to place your system wherever you need it, with an existing signal. “Security Brands’ interconnected systems allow you to install and control a complete system made up of many individual units over a large campus, or across multiple properties,” Brown explains. “Summit Control is easily administered through a convenient online dashboard, providing important reporting features to monitor events and activities by unit, user, and location,” Carr says. “These reporting features provide insights into how your access points are used. Residents and users conveniently use the Summit Control app to grant access at gates and doors for guests and visitors.” To learn more, visit www.securitybrandsinc.com.

Improving Access Control Accessibility for the Disabled Around 13% of the American population live with a disability. Disabilities vary, some are mental, others physical. Some disabilities can affect motor function while someone else might be disabled due to an accident.

Clean, Strip & Brighten.

Condition, Protect & Beautify. Many of these individuals struggle with accessibility getting in and out of buildings, getting through security gates, into gated communities and more. For those who are wheelchair bound or who use a walking aid, access problems make their lives a lot harder than it needs to be. According to Henry Wasserman, co-founder of Nimbio, a company that has developed the technology to make any gate a smart gate, the good news is that when it comes to access control, technology can greatly improve its function and accessibility for disabled individuals, making it easier for them to gain entrance to, and exit from, a gated property. Nimbio is a remote access solution that allows gate or lock access via an app on a smartphone. The smartphone app can unlock entry gates, pedestrian gates, and even common area doors too. “For the disabled who can use a smartphone, it’s a revolutionary property technology that makes life a whole lot easier for those with mobility issues and even more limiting disabilities,” says Wasserman. “It also makes life easier for the able-bodied, so its beneficial to the wider community as well.” This type of app is simple to use. Users open the relevant app, such as Nimbio access control, tap the button and the gate will open. Managers or property owner with a “master key,” can enable or disable the access others have to the gate. Once the system is installed, anyone with disabled access concerns who is worried about the gate being locked or not can simply click on the app to make sure it’s closed without having to get up and check. Gated communities or apartment complexes that require a keycode to enter the property should evaluate exiting pin pads for ease of access for the disabled. “This is paramount for those in wheelchairs,” says Wasserman. “Usually, wheelchair users can’t reach standard pin pads. Installing a lower pin pad access point solves this problem. Alternatively, an easier option is to install a cellular access control solution to open the gate or unlock the door remotely. Then someone in a wheelchair wouldn’t have to worry about reaching a pin pad.” He explains that a system like Nimbio can be used in conjunction with a pin pad as well. “You don’t have to replace the system that is there; it can just be expanded to improve access for everyone regardless of physical limitations. Keep in mind, smartphone access offers additional security benefits as well. It’s easier to misplace a code than a phone.” Even in older gated communities, access control can be modified to enable the disabled to use it. And, the same type of smart system can be

Fancy Fence® Brings Retractable Gate to the U.S. Secure, Innovative, Modern, Exclusive In today’s world, concerns about privacy and security are paramount, but people don’t want to feel blocked off from the world to feel safe. The Fancy Fence® retractable system combines simplicity and elegance with unique functionality to provide privacy and safety to customers when needed, while still allowing openness to the world around them. It is unlike any other product in the market. The patent-protected retractable Fancy Fence system uses conventional automated gate components in a unique, innovative new design to create a reliable product that is easy to use and maintain. With multiple picket options (i.e., steel, glass, Corten), the gate retracts into a vault underground. The system opens and closes much more quickly than traditional retractable fences and can operate in snowy conditions that render other fences inoperable. The system can be installed in multiple configurations and incorporates elegantly designed pickets, a retractable driveway gate and an “invisible” walkway gate. Ideal for commercial, public, and residential applications, the Fancy Fence gate system offers an unparalleled secure, modern design. A Fancy Fence retracting gate can be configured in unlimited lengths and under challenging design conditions, including narrow plots, sloped approaches, and tight fence lines. The simple gate design ensures ease of installation, use and maintenance. The use of counterweights instead of hydraulics allows for a smooth and faster operation. In the event of a power outage, the manual mode can be activated and is easy to access. Designed for drainage in the event of inclement weather and environmental concerns, there is also a backup pump to ensure on-going gate operation. George Berry, AIA, and owner of Modern Fence Holding, decided he wanted to represent the product after installing the system at a property in East Hampton, New York, in 2017. “What makes Fancy Fence so appealing is its unique combination of style and practicality. undeniable, James Bond-like cool factor, Fancy Fence is also a reliable, easy-to-use retractable fencing option that improves upon the function of traditional gates and makes it an option where there was not one previously.” The system draws on typical gate fundamentals with a simple design that is faster, quieter, safer, and more secure, with exceptional modern style. Highly customizable, Fancy Fence gates start at 6.5 feet with no limit to length. Pedestrian gates and fixed fencing are available to provide a complete system if desired. The system can come turnkey, or contractors can provide the vault and other required components. The company’s team of professional designers, engineers, and installation partners who understand the technical aspects required, will work with contractors to create a solution for any project’s unique challenges. Post installation warranty, maintenance, and training are part of the purchase. Fancy Fence is represented in the Eastern United States from Minnesota to Louisiana and all points east by Modern Fence Holding LLC, based in New York City. Fancy Fence is designed and manufactured in Poland, and was first introduced to Europe in 2014, and then in United States three years later. Fancy Fence is expanding and searching for the right partnerships with installation companies who have experience in commercial, multi-family, public space, and high-end residential projects. installed for private residence gates as well. Remember, any gate can become a smart gate. Being able to use a smartphone to open electronically locked doors can literally change someone’s life. Access for disabled people is a concern that is often only talked about when a disabled person living in specific community draws attention to the problem. But, with one in four Americans being disabled, this is something that should be addressed any time access control systems are put in place. These systems should work for everyone. For more information about Nimbio, visit www.nimbio.com.

Disability In The Community There’s a lot of education being done at the moment regarding what actually constitutes a disability. The CDC has put together comprehensive research on the subject. In the USA, the percentage of adults with functional disability types are: • 13.7% with a mobility disability • 10.8% with a cognitive disability • 6.8% with an independent living disability (trouble carrying out errands alone) • 5.9% Healing disability • 4.6% Vision disability • 3.7% self care (can’t look after themselves)

Gate Intercom Systems can Reduce Tailgating at Residential Communities Gated communities give residents a greater sense of security, reduce vehicle traffic, limit solicitors, and offer many other benefits. But there are challenges associated with gated entrances that can leave tenants feeling frustrated or even unsafe. The most common is someone tailgating a resident into the community while the gate is open. Tailgating — in the context of a gated property — refers to an unauthorized vehicle that follows a resident or another authorized individual so closely that they can pass through the gate while it remains open. Also called “piggybacking,” tailgating is a serious security breach — though not all tailgating

Rudenstine says a gate intercom system is a much more affordable and effective solution to reduce tailgating. “Gate intercoms make gated community access control simple. By installing an intercom at the front entrance of your property, you can speed up the flow of traffic and mitigate common access issues such as tailgating, car stacking, and more.” He says choosing the best gate intercom system is critical and suggests partnering with an experienced, well-respected gate intercom provider like ButterflyMX and selecting a system with the following four features:

MULTI-TENANT SYSTEM

has malicious intent. People often tailgate during busy times of the day to save time. In other cases, it’s just an authorized resident who tailgates because they forgot their fob or access credentials. It might even be a resident’s guest following the resident to their home in a separate vehicle. Aaron Rudenstine, CEO of ButterflyMX, a company that provides solutions for secure, convenient, smartphone-based property access for over 8500 properties, including gates communities, says regardless of the reason, tailgating is still a threat to staff and residents’ safety. “It’s best to prevent it altogether. And safety isn’t the only thing at stake. Other common risks of tailgating include physical damage to the gate, which can lead to costly repairs, and a negative reputation for the property if it is perceived to be unsafe. Harnessing the power and convenience of smartphones makes gate access simple and safe. Both property owners and their residents love the ease of use these systems provide.” Historically, the most popular solution to securely and effectively manage gate access has been with a guard station staffed 24/7 by a gate attendant. Gate attendants are tasked with verifying residents’ identities and vetting visitors before granting them property access. This solution is challenging due to the high costs of staffing and the slow process, which can lead to backed up traffic.

AUGUST 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

A multi-tenant gate intercom system — not a single-station system — allows visitors to contact residents directly to gain access. Because the resident can immediately identify the visitor and approve entry, vehicles can pass through the gates much faster than if they had to wait for their information to be recorded by a gate attendant. With fewer cars in line, wait times are shorter, which decreases the likelihood that an individual will try to tailgate another vehicle through the gate.

MOBILE APP-BASED INTERCOM SYSTEM

App-based gate entry systems cut down on wait times for guests seeking property access, and for residents who can quickly open the gate for themselves with their smartphones.

VIRTUAL KEYS AND PIN CODES FOR QUICK ACCESS Another way to facilitate smoother gate entry and reduce tailgating is by choosing an intercom with features like virtual keys and PIN codes. Many cloud-based gate intercom systems like ButterflyMX offer these features. Tenants can create and send virtual keys to visitors ahead of time. Guests receive a QR code that can be used on-demand, eliminating the need to call upon arrival. Codes can be single-use for one-time visitors or deliveries or multiple-use for regular visitors such as housekeepers or dog walkers.

BUILT-IN CAMERA AND AUDIT TRAIL A gate intercom system with a camera will prevent tailgating naturally by acting as a deterrent. When visitors see the camera on the intercom, they’ll see themselves reflected back on the screen and sense the feeling of being watched. This impression is usually enough to stop them from breaking the rules. Make sure your gate entry system goes a step beyond just a camera. Choose one that also provides an audit trail of gate access activity. The ability to record and review every gate access event enhances security and can help you identify tailgaters. Learn more about the smartphone-powered property access solutions from ButterflyMX at www.butterflymx.com.

A gate entry system with a mobile app means visitors can reach residents at any time, even if they aren’t home. Residents can remotely grant property access for visitors through the intercom’s mobile app on their smartphones. With a single swipe or push of a button, tenants can open the gate from anywhere.

LockeyUSA Launches Industry-Changing Gate Box LockeyUSA, a specialty supplier of high-quality perimeter security and gate hardware products for a wide range of commercial and residential applications, launches the GBS2000 gate box. The industry-changing gate box does not require welding and is a finished product, eliminating the need to paint or apply a powder coat, reducing installation time in the field. The LockeyUSA’s 2830 or 2835 mechanical keyless locks, sold separately, can be installed both single and double combination with the new GBS2000 gate box. Reversible for right- and left-hand gates, the GBS2000 easily installs onto 2” x 2” square metal gate frames. “This product was designed with the installer in mind and is a game-changer in the industry. With just two cuts to the gate, the upper and lower housing of the GBS2000 easily slides together onto the frame to create a gate box,”

says Scott Wojcik, national sales manager at LockeyUSA. The patent-pending GBS2000, made from cast aluminum and powder coated black, is weather-resistant for any exterior application. The launch of the GBS2000 gate box follows the release of the patented 2835-Adapter for installing the 2835 on vinyl and ornamental gates. “The GBS2000 is the second innovative, patent pending product added to the LockeyUSA product line since becoming a PrimeSource Building Products brand,” says Eric Johnson, vice president of sales at Nationwide Industries. “We are always looking for ways to make it easy for our customers to install our products in the field.” For more information, visit www.LockeyUSA.com.

Battery Backup for Gate Operators is Crucial

Purchasing battery backup for an automatic gate operator might just be the best investment when it comes to perimeter security.

The HySecurity SlideDriver gate operator (in green) with the HyInverter AC battery backup (in gray).

With climate change causing heat waves and droughts, and global conflicts causing oil supply shortages and price hikes, America could experience a huge energy shortage which could lead to more frequent power outages. Such an event leads to more frequent gate operator downtime, which makes any critical infrastructure vulnerable to criminal or terrorist attack. “Having a reliable battery backup bridges the gap in energy supply during a power supply shortage, which ensures continuous gate operation and perimeter security,” explains John Allen, senior product manager at Nice | HySecurity. “Some may think that backup power is unneeded if there are manual options to open a gate in a power outage, and every gate is required to have such a manual operation. These people may not be considering the need for emergency access during these times. Emergency crews cannot use this mode and may end up damaging the gate or the gate operator getting through.” According to Allen, battery backup solutions available in the market today involve the use of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), which is equipped with a bank of rechargeable batteries that provides backup power to a device during a power outage. Depending on the battery capacity and the number of batteries, Allen says a UPS can provide backup power for as short as a few hours to as long as 24 to 48 hours until AC power has been restored. Some UPS even provide surge protection and voltage regulation in places where power supply fluctuations are common. 24

AUGUST 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

“Gate operator accessories often can operate on 24V DC power too, such as wireless receivers for access control. These can be powered from the UPS keeping them up and running and maintaining access to the property,” he says. For gate operators, there are two kinds of UPS systems: integrated and standalone. An integrated system is built into the gate operator as a standard feature of factory option. Integrated UPS systems have the advantage of a smaller footprint and lower cost, but they are limited in what they can do by the size restrictions. They typically house only two 50 A-h batteries, and generally are meant for smallto medium-sized gates. A standalone UPS, on the other hand, is purchased as a separate piece of equipment. They are available with a much higher backup energy storage, up to four 100 A-h batteries, and can be used to power much larger gate operators. Standalone UPS systems are available with AC or DC power output depending on the needs of the gate operator. Regardless of one’s choice of UPS, Allen says its highly important that UPS systems be selected with the use case in mind. “How often do power outages occur?” says Allen. “An outage of a few hours is easy to overcome, but what if the power is out a day or many days? It’s important to consider the challenges we’re currently in and make decisions to avoid as many problems as possible. Installers should consider how long they need to keep a gate operational, and what the impact is when all reserves are depleted, then select a system that will handle the load. When sizing a UPS system be sure to include

the power needs of dependent systems such as access control. If one of these systems fails, the backup power for the gate operator is not much use.” Moreover, Allen says installers should also decide if they want the gate to fail safe, meaning that as battery reserves fail the gate opens and stays open, or if the gate should fail secure, meaning the gate will remain closed when the batteries fail, keeping the property secure. “Invest in an intelligently monitored system that checks the battery charge along with the ambient temperature. Be sure standalone UPS systems include heating and cooling systems, which can help extend battery life and ensure an efficient gate operator performance. Taking care of your battery backup ensures that it will be there for you when you really need it,” he says.

Don’t Chisel your Day Away: Gatemaster Announces New Lock for Wooden Gates Installing a lock in a solid timber gate can be a frustrating experience, but it shouldn’t have to be. On a mission to simplify gate hardware, UK company Gatemaster has just launched a new lock originally designed for timber gates aimed to make the whole process much easier. But don’t be fooled – this versatile lock can be used on most gate materials. Digital combination locks are generally fitted to gates where convenience and ease of use is important. They provide a safe solution for securing a garden gate with the option of quickly changing the code. But they aren’t always as straightforward to install. Many keypad locks for wooden gates consist of a keypad attached to a tubular mortice lock, which needs to be chiselled into the wooden gate. This can often lead to long hours of measuring and chiselling the area. Even for the most experienced, such a job can end up with frustration, holes that are a bit too big or small, and rough edges. Another issue is the constant changes a wooden gate goes through throughout the year. When it rains, the gate will absorb moisture, which can cause the gate to swell and the lock mechanism to pinch when operating. Conversely, when the gate retracts again in the summer temperatures, a gap can appear between the latch and receiving end on the gate post. If those two don’t meet, the lock is practically useless. The versatile surface fixed Superlock from Gatemaster provides an easier solution that is more secure than just a pad bolt or padlock. Gatemaster, a hardware manufacturer known for their range of easy-to-fit bolt-on locks for metal gates, aims to simplify gate hardware. That includes cutting down the time you spend installing your locks on all gates. They have redesigned the surface fixed Superlock (BDGW). The BDGW is made from stainless steel and incorporates a black-anodized aluminium

code panel, which protects it on all fronts from corrosion, oxidation, and vandalism. In addition, all the buttons, bolts and other visible surfaces are polished stainless steel – which looks great on any gate. This Superlock comes as either a single-sided lock with a 14-digit keypad on the outside and a thumb turn handle on the inside. Or you can choose the double-sided lock with the 14-digit keypad on both sides. Although the surface fixed Superlock was originally designed for wooden gates, it is a versatile lock that works with many materials. Due to the installation, you can use it on anything from steel, aluminium, composite, vinyl, and of course timber gates. To install the BDGW surface fixed Superlock, simply drill two 5mm holes and one 12mm hole through the face of the gate. You can then screw the marine-grade lock to the gate with ease. It’s easy to install, great for outdoor use and perfect for any gate material.

Safety Lighting on Gates Protects Vehicles from Damage Proper lighting for a security gate is vital. The number of vehicles receiving damage due to poor visibility of a security gate is unfortunately too high. Many times, drivers don’t wait long enough for the slide gate to fully open before driving forward and causing thousands of dollars of repairs to their vehicle. Many gate customers choose black for their security gates, which blends into the background at night, making them difficult to see. “The best enhancement to every gate is LED safety lighting,” explains Jonathan Brinkman, president of Gate Arms +. “Bright LEDs that change color depending on the gate position will add substantial ambient light to a gate area. Lights should flash red while opening or closing and turn solid green when fully opened. They can flash amber just prior to a timed close event and fade off when closed. Unlike reflective tape, LED strip lights can be seen from a distance, giving drivers the heads-up that they are approaching a gate.” Swing gates can have LEDs mounted to the bottom rail facing the roadway to create a colorful indirect lighting effect. LEDs that are mounted on a swing gate’s vertical edge give the driver a visual indication of the position of an open gate so they don’t hit it with the side of their car or mirror. Flashing red upon a gate’s closing also visually alerts against entrapment. “Slide gates can have LEDs mounted vertically on the non-moving side posts of the gate,” says Brinkman. The LEDs frame and illuminate the gate so the drivers will see the gate and its edges.” LEDs can also be mounted on the sliding gate itself, including the leading edge and bottom bar. In some cases, the power cord management can be tricky. “Some installers have used a coiled cable mounted to the middle of the gate, which minimizes the cable length needed,” says Brinkman. “A battery-based LED may also soon be available for use on slide gates.” One recent example from a gate client shows the value of lighting gates. After they installed lights on inbound and outbound slide gates, their gate strike incidents fell from an average of three per month in 2019 to two per year in 2020 and 2021. The decrease in accidents saved the HOA and unaffected drivers over $75,000 per year in gate repairs. Their HOA president says, “The LEDs make the gates look a lot prettier, and they added a lot of much needed light in those areas. It used to be difficult to see our gates at night, and sometimes, it was difficult to know if a gate was completely opened or still moving. We like seeing the green light because we know we won’t hit the gate.” GateArms+ is a Florida-based manufacturer of innovative, customizable, LED Safety Light Systems for high traffic environments and gated entrances. GateHands Make Farm Fencing More Secure You can’t help but notice those sagging gates when you drive down any rural highway. Finding a latch solution that offers the security needed without a hassle has long been a challenge for farmers and ranchers. Now, GateHands offers an innovative, yet simple and secure gate latch system that fits on all standard-sized tube gates. Founded by a father and daughter team, GateHands, which is manufactured in Ponca City, Oklahoma, provides a great alternative to the commonly used bailing wire and chains for holding together gates. The product began after the wheat harvest on a family farm in June of 2014, in north central Oklahoma. Brad Fredrick, the inventor, was working on some fencing for a neighbor. These gates were large and heavy and he started to think about how there had to be a better way to hold them together. Next, he went to his shop and did what any other farmer would do — he built his first prototype, out of necessity.

Using his welding skills and tools, it took Fredrick a few different prototypes to master the design. Now, six or so designs later, this product has been sold in all 50 states. GateHands is a two-piece system that attaches to existing gates and uses the weight of each gate to keep them straight and secure. Installation takes less than three minutes. A locking pin keeps the gates secured or a padlock can be added for additional security. Fredrick and his daughter Kelsey Wagner, coowners, have taken GateHands from concept to final product. Fredrick enlisted his daughter’s help with sales and marketing. Wagner runs MyMediaMatters Creative Agency, a marketing firm, also located in Ponca City (www. mymediamatters.com). Wagner built their ecommerce website, and they began selling exclusively online in 2015. “Right now, our product is the only double tube gate latch available in two sizes on the market,” Wagner said. “Our target retail customers include cattle ranchers, construction companies, oil and natural gas companies and any farm owner with metal tube gates currently being held closed by chains or wire,” said Wagner. “We definitely had to go through some failures to get where we are, but we are so excited to say that we now have customers all over the United States.” Two years ago, in addition to selling latches on their own website, they also began selling through TractorSupply.com.

“Our customers absolutely love this product, and we love serving our clients,” says Fredrick. “It’s literally the last gate latch you’ll ever own. It’s just a simple operation. There’s no more messing with chains or clanking, loose gates.” Wagner and Fredrick agree that the manufacturing and shipping process has been a lot of work, admitting that they have considered selling the product to a larger corporation. “We love our product and our customers, so it would have to be a buyer that we trust to really take care of our clients, but we also understand that a bigger corporation could take the manufacturing and shipping processes to the next level. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens,” said Wagner. GateHands fit on 1¾ -inch and 2-inch tube gates in all configurations, both side-by-side and overlapping. If you aren’t sure what size your gates are, you can download a measuring tool on the product website. Learn more at www.gatehands.com, or email sales@gatehands.com

Designing Successful Loop Systems It’s the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen and govern success or failure. So many of the things we touch in our daily lives go unnoticed because they are designed well. Some may think good design is flashy and gets lots of attention, but good design is invisible. It’s something that satisfies a goal, function, or objective so well that it often goes unnoticed. Good design is also important with automatic gates. “Loops are an automatic gate accessory that many customers don’t think about,” explains Brian Dickson, president of BD Loops, a designer of preformed direct burial and saw-cut induction loops for the gate, door, and parking industries. “For the public, a well-designed access control system will function automatically. The average Joe doesn’t understand how loops work or how they are utilized to protect their gate system.” The design expectation is the gate will open and close automatically and won’t close on the vehicles using the system. This article will explain proper loop layout design for automatic gates to exceed these design expectations. What is a loop? An inductive loop is a vehicle detection device which detects moving metal objects such as cars. Loops are installed with automatic gate systems to detect vehicles and prevent the gate from closing on a vehicle or provide a method of free egress by automatically opening the gate for an exiting vehicle. Dickson provides explanations of loop functions for automatic gates: A Reverse/Interrupt/Obstruction Loop will reverse a closing gate if a vehicle is detected. A reverse loop will also hold a gate open if a vehicle stops over the loop. If a gate is fully closed and a vehicle drives over a reverse loop, the gate will not open. Reverse loops protect the gate path without providing an exit function. They are often utilized on the outside (non-secure) side of a gate. An Exit/Egress/Automatic Open Loop will automatically open the gate when a vehicle drives over it. It will also hold a gate open and reverse a closing gate just like a reverse loop. An exit loop will do everything a reverse loop does plus automatically open the gate which is why exit loops can be used in replace of an inside reverse loop (if installed up close to the gate). A Shadow/Phantom/Center Loop is only found on swing gates, and is placed directly under the swing path of the gate. “Many installers do not fully understand the function of this critical loop that protects the swing path,” Dickson says. A shadow loop will check to see if a vehicle is within the swing path of the gate before the gate closes (on some gate operators, it will also check before the gate opens). If a shadow loop is installed, the gate will not close if a vehicle is within the swing path of the gate. “Drivers stop in the swing path of the gates for many reasons, such as waiting to turn onto the road or taking a call,” he explains. “Without a shadow loop, their car could be hit by the gate.” The shadow loop is very important. On a 12 ft. single swing gate, there is 20 ft. of undetectable area between the inside and outside reverse loop that a car can easily stop in and be undetected. The bigger the gate, the larger the undetectable area becomes. How many loops does a gate system need? “This is one of the questions we are asked the most,” Dickson says. “The answer depends on the type of gate. These recommendations are static regardless of if other devices are also installed (such as photo eyes).”

Slide Gate/Cantilever Gate/Vertical Lift/Vertical Pivot Gate: 2 Loops are required. • Inside Reverse or Exit Loop • Outside Reverse Loop

Swing Gate: 3 Loops are required. • Inside Reverse or Exit Loop • Shadow Loop underneath the gate swing path • Outside Reverse Loop Optional Exit Loop: “If space permits on your gate system, you may want to install an additional exit loop further down the driveway as a time saving convenience so the gate will be more open or fully open by the time an exiting vehicle reaches the gate,” he says. Dickson encourages contractors to suggest the proper number of loops to the customer. “You are the expert on automatic gate systems, not the customer. They will not be aware of all the accessories that can make their system smarter and more intuitive to use. They won’t know that without the right number of loops, there will be instances where the gate can close on a vehicle. Your expertise and suggestions can help the customer better enjoy their gate system and make it safer to use.” Ask the customer how they imagine the gate system will work, make suggestions and explain how safety devices work and how the system will function without them. This rule doesn’t apply to just loops. Explain there are accessories that can make the gate system more convenient and enjoyable to use such as safety edges, a gate intercom, or wi-fi connectivity “smart operator” functions so they can use their phone to check if their gate is open or open it remotely. “Don’t be afraid to recommend an additional exit loop installed further back for added convenience. Always recommend the proper number of reverse and shadow loops to prevent closure of the gate

PROFESSIONAL WOOD CARE onto a vehicle to give yourself and the user peace of mind and prevent panic and risky actions when a gate is closing,” Dickson advises. “When a customer hires you or your company to automate their gates, they look to you to be the expert. Expertise is often overlooked,” he says. “Don’t be afraid to be the expert and make suggestions that improve the overall design of the system. Sell the right number of loops, make the system more intuitive by installing additional exit loops, and upsell the job. Impress and give confidence to your customers by being that expert who will bring more value over the cheapest bid. This doesn’t apply to only loops, but there are a lot of accessories that can be put into a gate system to improve a customer’s experience with a gate. You know about these accessories, but the customer does not.” BD Loops has been in business for over 20 years, its products are available through over 600 distributors in the U.S. and Canada. GIVE US AN IDEA OF YOUR BUSINESS FOOTPRINT, HOW MANY EMPLOYEES DO YOU HAVE? We have 85 team members and are adding daily. Our team is our most valuable asset; we do not consider them employees. The goal is to create a culture of people in progress working together to achieve something bigger than any one person.

AS WITH MANY ENTREPRENEURS, NOT EVERY IDEA PANS OUT. WITH THE END OF YOUR FIRST BUSINESS, WHAT WERE THE CIRCUMSTANCES AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN? At the age of 18, I started a trucking company and by the age of 29, I crashed it straight into the ground. I did not understand culture and what it meant to be a servant leader. I was driven by the almighty dollar instead of my team.

HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOUR TEAM MEMBERS? Our goal is to inspire. It is very hard to motivate but easier to inspire. HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED? I enjoy our team and surround myself with highly motivated people who are not coin operated. I think about my people every day, how to take care of their needs and the needs of their families.

Robert married Kay Williams in 1970, sharing 25 years together. She preceded him in death in 1995. He is survived by Alda (Sackberger) Davis whom he married in 2006, as well as two sons, two step-daughters, one stepson and many grandchildren. Bob proudly served in the Illinois National Guard from 1970, until his honorable discharge in 1976. He graduated from Eastern Illinois with his bachelor’s degree in business. He spent the majority of his career working for Master Halco Fence Company. At the time

of his retirement, he served as a chain link product manager. Even after retirement, Bob continued to stay close to several people in the fencing industry and never skipped a beat when it came to keeping up with the ever-changing industry. Although Bob could be soft spoken, he never met a stranger. He was one-of-a-kind, and his friendly spirit will be greatly missed. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to Cairo Elks Lodge 0651 and/or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Charles Wright Weston Charles Wright Weston passed away June 25, 2022, at the age of 75. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ellen M. Moore. Charles was raised in Charleston, South Carolina and graduated from Presbyterian College with a bachelor’s degree in business. After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, Charlie worked in the fence and security industries. Over a period of more than 40 years, he founded and managed three successful companies and was president of the Carolinas Fence Association and the Chain Link

Fence Manufacturers Institute, where he also served three years on the board of directors. Additionally, he served two years on the board of governors of the American Fence Association. In 2013, Charlie was inducted into the AFA Hall of Fame. For those who wish to honor Charlie with a donation, the family suggests a donation to the Eastminister Presbyterian Church Mission Service and Benevolence Committee or City of Columbia Animal Services in South Carolina.

Opportunities Are Out There: Now is the Time to Take Them The CLFMI Summer Meeting was a great success. Since this was the first truly post-COVID meeting of the chain link fence industry, it was no surprise there was a great turnout. Everyone was ready to be together again after a couple of years of limited travel and Zoom meetings. The increased attendance added a lot of energy to the event, as people were renewing long-time friendship and business relationships. We also had a very high percentage of first-time attendees. This is important to our industry because these new company representatives bring not only new perspectives and experience, but they also bring new questions. All organizations benefit from new participants asking simple questions such as, “Why does CLFMI do things this way?” and “Have you ever thought about doing this?” These types of questions make us really focus on constant improvement in our organization, which is a different kind of energy. There was an overall sense of optimism, an ongoing discussion about opportunities that are out there – right now – for the chain link industry. There was enthusiasm about where the industry is, and where it is going. Sure, there was also talk about the challenges of higher energy costs, manpower shortages, and a looming recession. However, there was even more talk about the positive things happening in the industry. Here are some examples of why CLFMI and its members feel good about the next few years:

There are numerous chain link product innovations being developed by CLFMI members. These innovations will enable chain link to become a problem-solving option on even more projects. This is especially true in high security markets, where threat levels continue to rise faster than budgets. New chain systems will provide versatility, upgrading capabilities, and adherence to the highest standards. Presentations by representatives from two major industries – transportation and energy –

54

AUGUST 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

assured CLFMI members that chain link is still the product of choice for many perimeter security projects, which is good news. Even better news is that integration with other security systems is becoming a bigger priority than ever before.

The CLFMI board gave its support to three changes to the CLFMI bylaws which will enable and encourage even more industry firms to become CLFMI members. If adopted, these changes will make CLFMI membership more attractive to smaller, more regionally oriented manufacturers, distributors who sell chain link in substantial quantities, and producers of ancillary products used with chain link.

Since perimeter security and fencing are often some of the last elements to be completed on these projects, there should be plenty of opportunities for substantial chain link projects for the next couple of years.

CLFMI committees are all working effectively to support the goals of the Institute for 2022. Membership continues to grow in an era when most associations are struggling. Three new members have joined in the first half of 2022.

All these things help to justify the optimism that ran through the Summer Meeting, an optimism which applies to both the industry and the Institute. It was rewarding to hear members say that CLFMI deserves credit for many of the good things that are happening in the chain link marketplace. That’s what happens when opportunity meets an energetic organization with a great team of leaders and a focus on growing its industry. I can’t wait until our CLFMI Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. in November. Please visit www.chainlinkinfo.org

Read what some of our happy customers say about Noodle Link™: “We proposed using Noodle Link on a large job for a major company, which was approved. The company has two locations. We were only awarded one location. The other location was awarded to another fence company that put up chain link only and hand inserted the slats afterwards. We both started at the same time. We finished more than two weeks earlier than the company that hand inserted the slats. ” Jeff in Pennsylvania “Went great! A lot quicker than stuffing slats. It’s [Noodle Link] a perfect system, nothing wrong with it. So easy to use, only way I want to use slats is using Noodle Link. AcoustiFence Helps with Better Sleep As the world continues to shift to a fasterpaced, digitally driven era, we are turning into a society that expects people to perform at a level beyond their ability. To keep up with the demands and pressure, people are finding themselves in need of higher levels of caffeine and stimulant consumption to be able to perform, leading to an increased incidence of burnout, inability to shut down at the end of the day, and sleep disorders. “In today’s work of constant connectivity and communication, more and more people are complaining of sleep problems, including insomnia and sleep deprivation, with mental health problems also increasing at an alarming rate,” says Natalia Chudy, MS, MHC, Acoustical Consultant for AcoustiBlok. Chudy holds a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling and is OSHA-certified in industrial hygiene. Chudy says constant over-stimulation of the human senses can also cause many people to become more sensitive to noise, as it comes at us all day from cell phones ringing, texts message alerts, pop up ads and more, leaving us unable to “turn our brains off” when it is time to relax. AcoustiFence noise-reducing fencing manufactured by AcoustiBlok can help create a

62

AUGUST 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

more quiet, sensory calming environment that can help combat insomnia and minimize other sleep disruptions from external noise. “It may seem strange to consider a fencing material as a therapeutic option, but AcoustiFence’s proven ability to block sound offers real benefits,” says Chudy, “particularly when it comes to better sleep that is uninterrupted by noise from traffic, industry, air conditioners, construction, televisions, neighbors and more.” AcoustiFence is made of a propriety formula that not only helps block sound, but in frequencies of 50Hz and below, the heavy, limp AcoustiFence material actually begins to vibrate from low frequency sound waves. In essence, Chudy says it is transforming these low frequency sound waves into mechanical movement and internal friction energy. Laboratory tests indicate this transformation inhibits these lower frequencies from penetrating AcoustiFence, reducing their level by over 60 percent relative to the human ear. In addition, AcoustiFence becomes an absorbent material in these frequencies with test results showing an NRC (noise reduction coefficient) as high as 0.78 (with 1.00 being the max). This means it not only reduces sound as a barrier, but also acts as an acoustical

absorbent material in very low frequencies, as opposed to reflecting those frequencies back like most other barriers. AcoustiBlok was recently awarded a 20year patent for AcoustiFence which can be attached onto an existing fence or built into the framework. AcoustiFence can be used as a temporary/reusable construction noise barrier. It can also be used on tennis, basketball, and pickleball courts. The AcoustiFence is a much cheaper, easier to install, and acoustically sound solution to other noise barriers, like concrete walls, which are very expensive, hard to install and provide little, if no, acoustical value. AcoustiFence has been tested at a hurricane center to withstand 202 mph wind loads. AcoustiFence’s new print screen options make the fence more attractive and environmentally friendly. CLOSE THE DEAL BY STANDING OUT IN YOUR CLIENT’S EMAIL Technology has impacted our lives for better and for worse. It’s easy to take work with us anywhere we go, but it also means we receive hundreds of notifications each day. Perhaps the largest number of those pings come from an email account. It’s easy to let emails pile up and go unanswered for days if the message does not require an immediate response. However, what does that mean for you if an existing or potential client hasn’t read your proposal? Routine follow-ups can become stagnant for both the salesperson and the client. It’s important to put in some extra effort to personalizing your pitches and reminders so the recipient will not only open your email but also respond. Here are some tips to creating the best sales email that will turn results: 1. Be personal and impactful Clients can easily spot a generic email. Creating a personal connection from the start is what keeps clients coming back to you for help. Start with a short and enticing subject line to pique the reader’s interest. Then begin your email with a strong opening line that either establishes a reason you believe the client can benefit from your service, or a mutual relation with someone that allows the reader to know where you two may have crossed paths. Finally, the body of the email should give the reader an idea of how your product can help them reach their goals followed by a strong closing that provides a clear call to action.

66

AUGUST 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

2. Send your emails strategically It’s important to think about what days and times might offer your email the best chance of being read. According to a 10-month study from Hubspot.com, Tuesday is the best day of the week to send an email followed by Monday and Wednesday. That same report also found that the highest open rate during the week is between 10 a.m. and noon with the peak of email interaction occurring at 11 a.m. Of course, this guide may not work for every client. If you have a strong relationship with a client and know they only respond to sales pitches after hours, it might pay off to send your email at the end of the day. Personalizing your email goes beyond just the message, it also involves being aware of the reader’s time and how you can maximize their chances of responding. 3. Follow up and remain diligent If your client doesn’t respond to your first pitch, don’t get worried too fast. On average, client’s need five follow-ups before saying yes to your offer. The key is to continue providing relevant information to the client so the information stays

in the front of their mind. It’s also important to keep in touch with your client after the sale is finalized. Follow up with your client to show you are invested in their success. Keeping communication open will help you develop a working relationship and help you understand your client’s needs. Automated emails can save you time, but they often do not lead to developing trust with a client. Templates are incredibly useful, but it’s still important to add a touch of personalization. By writing and sending effective emails, your client will have a greater incentive to respond and you increase your chances of success.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking you operate better with a little mess. The fact is, you’re missing out on quite a few benefits that being more organized in in all areas of your life will deliver, including: • Less Stress • Increased motivation and productivity • Better sleep • Improved relationships • Healthier lifetstyle

Here are some simple changes to help you be more organized. You’ll be amazed at the difference. in not only your productivity but your overall happiness. EVERYTHING MUST HAVE A HOME. And that home cannot be a pile on your desk or the floor. A home indicates a place you are going to put an item after you’ve used it— EVERY TIME! Think about the time you waste looking for things — if those things had a home, you’d know exactly where to go! If you

can’t find a home for something, you don’t need it. FREE YOURSELF. We are all prisoners of our past until we make the choice to free ourselves from the lessons with which we grew up. Did you grow up in an obsessively neat house? Or was your house messy all the time? When we grow up in an extreme like that, typically one of two things happens: either you blindly follow the path your parents have laid before you – and wonder

how you ended up exactly like them. Or, you make a conscious decision to be different. As with most things in life, the middle ground is the best. Be organized to the point that you can find things without wasting time, but not so obsessive that no one can stand to live with you! ORGANIZE BY BROAD CATEGORIES. Whether you have a hard copy filing system or electronic files on your computer, or both, like most people, create folders for broad categories. When you’re looking for that elusive article or document, you no longer have to remember the exact name of the file, just the broad category it falls into. HAVE A SCHEDULE. You must at least have a template of how your day should go. What do you need to do first? And after that, what will you work on? That way, when you get interrupted, you can easily remember what you were working on based on where you are in your schedule. PRIORITIZE. Everything you do in the course of your day falls into one of three categories: “Must Do,” “Should Do,” or “Nice to Do.” Begin to begin to organize your day based on these categories. “Must Do” items are necessary to your goals, and typically have a deadline attached. Prioritize them and work on them first. “Should Do” items are important, but don’t have a deadline. They can be worked on after the “Must Do” stack is completed. “Nice to Do” things are those items you would enjoy doing, or that would be fun when you have free time, but they are not necessary. Those are tackled after the first two categories are complete. Obviously, you need to review each category regularly, as items will move from category to category as deadlines get attached or moved, or priorities change. If you currently have none of the above practices in place, consider implementing one of the above changes at a time as you transition to a more organized, productive life.

Chain Link Fence Gate Fabrication Standards This topic is one that is discussed often in the fence circles around the country. Many professional fence contractors fabricate their own gates in-house and many others purchase from a supplier or distributor. It is the personal decision of the companies what direction they wish to choose. There are also some that fabricate their residential gates but leave the commercial gate fabrications to suppliers or distributors. Again, the decision is yours as to how you decide to run your operation. The following overview of chain link gate fabrication for me, started in my early 20’s while working with Jefcoat Fence Company, in Pearl, Mississippi. The owner, Mr. Jere Jefcoat sent me to Automatic Gates in Memphis, Tennessee to spend a few days with Phillip Doyle for some gate operator insights and training and he introduced me to welding gates. The “cheat sheet” as he called it, for proper cuts and notching was scratched on a piece of paper and hung on a nail in the fabrication shop. This “cheat sheet” had so many marks and changes on it, it was hard to determine what measurement was the correct one. But Phillip knew this chart like the back of his hand and quickly got me up to speed on the “how to” building a chain link gate. With a wire welder, he had me welding 1 3/8’ x .047 tubing and I was blowing holes in it like crazy. He taught me the correct techniques such as direction of the wire flow, moving the welding wand in a smooth manner and I got the hang of it quickly. Now, let’s be very clear, I was NOT a certified welder by any means, but I could weld and build a structurally sound good gate. It provided me the knowledge to establish our own shop for Jefcoat Fence and control our gate fabrication schedule in-house. I share all this to say, if I can learn how to weld and how to set up a welding fabrication shop, so can you. Many companies have made the decision to build their gates in-house to maintain better control of their schedules and in most cases, add profitability to their operation. So, lets discuss the basics needs for a proper shop and fabrication set up. Of course, we must always make sure we have proper welding protective equipment such as safety glasses, welding jackets, hood, gloves and always a good pair of leather boots. Next is our shop tools that will include some type of pipe cutter and pipe notcher and a good wire welder. Many use a rod welder and if that is your preference, keep on using it, but for heavy production and efficient welding, a wire welder will your best choice. Once you have established the necessary shop setup and tools, companies should consider a gate fabrication table of some type. Gates have been welded and I have personally witnessed many gates fabricated on the floor of the shop and this practice works, but will eventually wear on the fabricator and it is best to build a fabrication table of some type. 70

The following are examples of both commercial and residential gate tables:

Commercial Gate Table

Residential Gate Table

Regardless of how you decide to build a table, it will add efficiency to your fabrication and if you are doing a lot of chain link work, a gate fabrication table will pay for itself in just a few gate builds. Invest in a well-designed and heavy duty table and it will be there for the long haul. The following is an example of best practices for fabricating a residential gate:

Residential Single Gates (1 3/8” tubing framework) Opening less 6” for cross piece cuts (2 required; NBE) Place cross pieces 1” from top of uprights Place bottom cross piece ¼” from bottom of upright Height less 2 ½” for upright piece cuts (2 required) Add horizontal (cross) brace for all gates over 4’ height (1 required; NBE) Add 3/8” truss rods for all gate panels over 10’ width EXAMPLE: 42” opening X 48” high // 36” cross piece cuts and 45 ½” upright cuts

The following is an example of the best practices for fabricating a commercial gate:

Fence companies have their own “best practices” for fabricating gates to accommodate their needs and the results are the same: a more productive and efficient company to add profitability to the operation. If you are interested in establishing your own gate fabrication shop or interested in receiving a complete Chain Link Gate Fabrication “best practice” outline, please email info@ fenceconsultinggroup.com.

His passion is to elevate and promote the fence industry in a professional manner and provides consulting services to support fence industry owners in understanding how to implement effective procedures into their operation and maximize their profitability.

Commercial Single Gates (1 5/8” framework any weight) Opening less 6 1/2” for cross piece cuts (2 required; NBE) Height less 3” for latch side upright piece cuts (1 required) Height less 1” for hinge side upright piece cuts (1 required) Add horizontal (cross) brace for all gates over 4’ height (1 required; NBE) Add 3/8” truss rods for all single gates over 10’ width Add 13” to upright cuts for bard wire EXAMPLE: 42” opening X 72” high // 35 1/2” cross piece cuts and 71” hinge upright cut, 69” latch upright cut.

The following is an example of best practices for fabricating a commercial cantilever gate. This style has a compression brace, but many fence professionals use a retention and works well as a best practice as well.

Cantilever Gates Cross pieces (2 ½” SCH 40)= Gate Opening + half of opening + 1’ for overall gate length Height of fence less 10 ½” for uprights (2” SCH 40, NBE) Diagonal Braces cut to fit (1 5/8” SCH 40, NTF) Barb Wire Brackets, 4” offset (NBE) / 18” upright (1 5/8” SCH 40) Welded from top of gate on the 2” uprights, right below the 2 ½” cross piece NOTE: 1) Uprights will not exceed 5’ spacing 2) Fabric will cover full length of gate 3) Welded truss rods, tension wire at top/bottom for fabric attachment with hog rings Example: 20’ opening x 72” high (20’ + 10’ + 1’ = 31’ o/a length) Cross pieces 2 ½’ SCH 40 x 31’ (2 required) Upright cut 61 ½” x 2” SCH 40 (7 required, NBE) Diagonal Brace (6 required, NTF)
