Mike Levy

National Metal Industries

A love of trade shows combined with his family’s hardware store was the spark needed for Mike Levy with National Metal Industries to enjoy a life-long adventure in the fencing industry. His grandfather, Milton, opened the hardware store during the 40s, then his father, Norman, took over in the mid-50’s. His mother, Marie, became owner in 2009. As vice president and the third generation in his family to have a role in the company, Mike says being successful in business comes down to treating people right. NATIONAL METAL INDUSTRIES IS A FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS. HOW DID IT BEGIN? My grandparents opened a hardware store in Brooklyn, New York during the 40s. My father, Norman Levy, started running the store when he was 16 years old. He transformed the hardware store into a fence supply company. The growth of the business and changes in the current neighborhood prompted him to move to a new location in Long Island. He specialized in privacy slats, aluminum slats at the time. He expanded his offering into all types of fence products, leading the way to where we are today. My mother, Marie, became owner in 2009. I’m the third generation to have a role in our family business.

WHEN DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN THE COMPANY? I spent my summers in the early 90s at the business. I began working full time in 1998. All my life, I was around my father’s shop. My earliest national trade show was FENCETECH in New Mexico when I was 13 years old. My parents took me to the regional shows in New England and New Jersey when I was in elementary school. Nothing was more fun than giving out the NMI bags of samples. As I got older, the shows were inspiration for going back to work the following week with a boost of what I wanted to do with the business. The tradeshows started to become my favorite vacation of the year.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT USING AMERICAN MADE PRODUCTS? A large percentage of our products are made right here in America, we are proud to be able to say that. I would like to see manufacturing come back to the USA and would love to see children learning in shop classes again. I felt so accomplished in school when I finished the metal toolbox that sits in my office to this day. WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY?

HOW HAVE THE SERVICES AND PRODUCTS YOU OFFER CHANGED OVER TIME? Two-year-old Mike sweeping the floors at the shop.

pizza parlors and delis. We also provided materials for freight companies to add packages to passenger airplanes that were converted into freight. We adapt, as needed.

We have adapted through the years, but our core model is to make sure the customer is satisfied with what they need in a timely way. From a customer walking in with a broken latch to truckloads of supplies, we are dedicated to making the person walk out feeling we did right by them. At the beginning of COVID last year, we started to make panel partitions for

The heating oil company around the corner from my business has a quote from the founder, Irving Levi, on a plaque mounted to a boulder. It says, “Just let people know that you genuinely like them. And then treat them the way you’d hope to be treated.” I find in business and life, if you are approachable, you tend to get further with people.

WHAT ADVICE DID YOU RECEIVE THAT HAS BEEN HELPFUL IN YOUR CAREER? Ken Piil from Piil Fence pushed me to get involved with the local chapter of the fence association, then he made me secretary. Next thing I knew, I was president. This was a huge confidence builder and transformed me as a person in business and in my personal life. I know that’s not advice, but you don’t want to hear about my mom judging every meal I eat at my desk during the day! There are some great people in this industry who I have had the pleasure to deal with; they have given me ways to grow my business or bounce ideas around and that is truly a gift.

Knot Knowledge As the saying goes, a fence is only as strong as its weakest link, and this also applies when that link is connected with a knot. Knot types vary based on the fence’s use and its purpose, factors it’s important to consider when choosing a fencing product. Here’s a look at some of the most common fence knots and the advantages they offer: BARBED WIRE Barbed wire construction consists of two wire strands twisted together and starred with twoor four-point barbs at intermittent distances. This fence is popular for cattle and other livestock fencing. HINGE JOINT The hinge joint is the most common knot in agricultural fencing. It is formed by wrapping the vertical stay wire pieces around the horizontal line wire at each intersection, creating a mesh effect. This design can also absorb animal impact without damage and is the typically an economical knot choice. “S” KNOT The “S” knot design uses a separate piece of wire that attaches the line wire to the solid stay wire assuring maximum strength and prevents the fence from buckling or sagging. This design is smooth to the touch so there is no risk of injury to animals. The knot’s strength holds up to even the strongest animal or weather impact while still maintaining flexibility.

Hinge, “S” and Fixed Knot Images Source: San Antonio Steel Company

FIXED KNOT The fixed knot utilizes solid vertical stay wires, which increase the vertical strength of the fence and allow for increased post spacing. The knot is a separate piece of wire tightly wrapped around the line wire and stay wire. Fixed knot fence is very durable and resistant to animal damage, making it a good choice for various types of livestock.

There are other variations of these standard designs, and the knot that’s right for your project will depend on your needs.

Decks Railings

Decks offer a place for relaxation, outdoor cooking, entertaining, and extra space for many activities and functions. From the materials used to the type of finishes applied, there are many options. Railings provide important safety measures as well as adding the aesthetically pleasing final touch. Read on to learn more about products available for building and keeping decks and railings looking good for years.

DECK DIRECTIONS 2021 DESIGN TRENDS There really is no place like home. If we didn’t know it before, we certainly learned it over the past year living under the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. With four out of every five Americans spending more time at home now than ever before, outdoor living space has become a big focus for homeowners, and subsequently contractors. Decks are a great way to expand and improve the functionality of their home’s exterior real estate, whether to provide a peaceful retreat, gathering place, alternative cooking and dining areas, workout zone, private escape or some other needed extra space. The focus on decks as an enhanced part of a home’s living space isn’t expected to end any time soon. Here’s a closer look at some of the most popular deck design trends.

SIZE MATTERS

UNDER COVER

Decks and porches are becoming much more than just a small, flat space on the side of a home. Today’s decks provide expansive, functional spaces that are an extension of the home’s living area. The bigger the space, the more time people will spend enjoying it. Some homes are taking decks to multiple levels, with different decking platforms for different functions. For example: one area for grilling and another for dining; one for the kids to play and one for the adults to relax; a deck on the main living area and a smaller deck off a basement or second story.

Adding a cover to a deck expands it use through more seasons, providing shade from the summer sun and protection from stormy weather rain. The home’s roofline can be extended over the deck, or an awning, pergola, sun sail or other type of cover can be added, depending on the homeowner’s preference.

SPACE FOR GREEN SPACE

STAND THE TEST OF TIME

Since the decks are playing a more important role in home space, homeowners are looking for more durable materials and construction that will last, 28 with APRIL 2021for | FENCE NEWS USA less need maintenance.

With a few additions, a deck can be brightened and transformed into a garden space for flowers, shrubs and trees, as well as herbs, fruits and vegetables. New innovations in deck railing accessories allow you to add live elements to your deck without having to sacrifice floor space.

TURN UP THE HEAT

A firepit or fireplace is a popular cozy addition to today’s decks. In addition to providing warmth when needed, these provide a natural gathering place for families and friends, and an excellent source of flames for making s’mores or roasting a hot dog.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

As people are spending more time on their decks, they are searching for new ways to light this space. Popular trends include solar and low-volage lighting, stair lights, café and string lights and other options that provide increased visibility and soft ambiance.

ENVISION BUILDING PRODUCTS EXPANDS RIDGE PREMIUM COLLECTION Expanding its popular Ridge Premium collection to meet market demand, Envision announces the addition of its new 20-foot length square edge board and 16- and 20-foot grooved edge boards. “Ridge Premium has quickly become one of our most sought-after products,” said Shara Gamble, sales and marketing director for Envision. “The rich, variegated colors and performance of composite decking available at such an affordable cost is a great option for any outdoor living space.” With the addition of both the longer 20-foot length and the grooved edge option, Envision’s Ridge Premium is now an ideal choice for any sized project and any skill level – DIY or Pro. “After we launched Ridge Premium at the beginning of 2020, we had quite the demand for the grooved edge,” added Gamble. “We heard from deck builders who loved the look and pricing, but they prefer to use hidden fasteners on their projects. Our team has worked hard to develop this highquality board that meets that need.”

Crafted using Envision’s proprietary Compress Technology™, Ridge Premium’s high-density cap and EverGrain Core™ are physically bonded together with tremendous heat and pressure to squeeze out air pockets and create the deep grain Envision decking is known for. Ridge Premium is available in three softly blended colors – Black Walnut, Gunstock, and Vintage Oak – with 12-, 16-, and 20-foot square edge and 16and 20-foot grooved edge boards. Companion skirting is available in all three colors. Envision Building Products LLC provides homeowners with exceptional decking and railing products to create a beautiful outdoor space. Manufactured in the heartland of the USA, these offerings include Distinction®, Inspiration®, Expression®, Ridge Premium, and EverGrain® composite decking, along with TAM-RAIL® railing. FENCE QUARTER, LLC ANNOUNCES THE DEBUT OF ITS CARBON FIBER FAIL NOT HARDWARE SYSTEM The First of Its Kind Used in Wood Deck Railings Fence Quarter, LLC has launched its patent pending FAIL NOT carbon fiber supplement, a durable piece of hardware that can be incorporated into a wood deck railing for added support. This type of hardware system is especially beneficial for balconies and patios that require additional railing support, such as installations on the first or second floors. The Deck Railing Panels provided by Fence Quarter offer a beautiful and easy-to-install solution for homes of all sizes and styles. Like the company’s patented wood deck railing inserts, the FAIL NOT was inspired by the founding team’s extensive field experience. The team sought to create innovative tools that effectively simplify and streamline the otherwise time-consuming, costly as well as frustrating experiences that many homeowners and construction companies experience when installing, building, and maintaining porches or decks. Like the pre-assembled deck railing inserts, the FAIL NOT is made from the highest quality material, is easy to install, and delivers long-lasting results. The FAIL NOT patent pending hardware system is the strongest insert on the market, exceeding Building Code requirements by over 11 times. It is made using carbon fiber and designed to withstand temperatures beyond 120 °F. Like all Fence Quarter products, the FAIL NOT hardware system is designed to be highly functional and aesthetically pleasing. In fact, after installation the only component of the FAIL NOT system that can be seen are the stainless-steel security screws. Unlike other support systems, the FAIL NOT is uniquely designed so that homeowners can readily remove their deck railing inserts for regular maintenance or for changing to another one of Fence Quarter’s unique designs.  In short, the carbon fiber support system only needs to be installed once, which saves time and reduces costs, while delivering a lower environmental footprint because the carbon fiber is made in the USA from 100 percent recycled materials. The FAIL NOT, as well as the entire debut line of Fence Quarter products, is now available for purchase. To learn more, contact Fence Quarter by calling 800-205-0128, emailing sales@fencequarter.com, or visiting www.FenceQuarter.com. Based in Lynnwood, Washington, Fence Quarter LLC designs and manufactures innovative tools as well as deck and porch railing inserts. THE AZEK COMPANY ANNOUNCES INNOVATIVE NEW BUILDING PRODUCTS FROM TIMBERTECH® Landmark American Walnut Landmark Castle Gate

The AZEK Company announces innovative new products from its TimberTech brand, a leader in premium decking and railing. Available this spring, the products include the TimberTech® AZEK® Landmark Collection™ and new railing options. The all-new Landmark Collection is the latest extension of the premium TimberTech AZEK capped polymer decking line and uses advanced technology to create the most natural wood look yet, bringing on-trend interior flooring design to outdoor decking. Inspired by the in-demand look of rustic, reclaimed wood, the Landmark Collection features a natural woodgrain surface texture, complemented by unique crosscuts. Available in two colors, Castle Gate™ and American Walnut™, the collection marks the first time TimberTech has applied its proprietary color-cascading technology to capped polymer boards, which blends several colors to produce sophisticated highlights and lowlights, resulting in the same board-to-board variation found in nature. “Our relentless dedication to superior technology enables homeowners to go against the grain when it comes to creating their outdoor living spaces,”

says Jesse Singh, CEO of The AZEK Company. “The new TimberTech AZEK Landmark Collection is the latest example of how we’re challenging the status quo. The combination of a unique design and cascading colors creates a stunning, nature-inspired visual that’s never been seen in the industry.” Engineered with the same materials science as all TimberTech AZAK boards, the Landmark Collection is made from 100 percent synthetic material unlike traditional composite decking, which uses wood particles. The result is low-maintenance decking that stays cooler and offers unrivaled resistance to moisture, fading, scratching and staining. All TimberTech AZEK products are backed by an industry-leading limited lifetime warranty and a 50-year limited fade and stain warranty. Consistent with the AZEK’s commitment to revolutionize outdoor living by building a more sustainable future, the capped polymer deck boards are made from approximately 50 percent recycled materials. The AZEK Company is an industry-leading manufacturer of lowmaintenance and sustainable residential and commercial building products. DURALIFE BY BARRETTE OUTDOOR LIVING INVESTS SIGNIFICANTLY TO DOUBLE DECKING CAPACITY DuraLife by Barrette Outdoor Living recently announced a multi-million dollar investment in upgrades at its Biddeford, Maine, facility to double the production of composite decking materials in 2021. This significant investment in equipment and manpower will provide a premium service to its customers by ensuring all needs will be met within a two-week distribution lead-time. As part of these upgrades, new state-of-the-art automated equipment and multiple extrusion lines have been added in the plant to optimize efficiencies in the production process, allowing for faster production of deck boards. This new equipment will also offer operators the ability to more efficiently monitor and track line performance ensuring there is no compromise to quality. In addition to its investment in machinery, DuraLife has also added 65,000 square feet to its supply yard to provide storage for the additional volume of decking being produced. Operations at the plant have also moved to 24/7 — increasing shifts from two to three, seven days a week. This extra manpower has not only contributed to increased production, it has also created more than 30 new jobs in Biddeford and the surrounding area. “The investment in our DuraLife facility is significant and enables us to achieve faster speed without compromising the quality of our decking products and the addition of manpower to our workforce is a winwin for our company and for the local community,” said Sylvain Bellemare, vice president of engineering and process improvement at Barrette Outdoor Living.   Barrette Outdoor Living is the leading North American supplier of exterior home products to the residential market. Barrette Outdoor Living produces vinyl, aluminum and steel fence and railing; composite decking; and other outdoor products sold through specialty retailers, home centers and lumberyards. Bidding and Estimating in the Fence Industry We all look for the best price in whatever we buy; it is human nature to want to get the best deal. The fence industry, in particular, is often ultra-competitive. Residential jobs are often priced with little profit while commercial bids can sometimes have a 20, 30, or even 40% spread on the same job. One of the most difficult and misunderstood aspects of the fencing industry is the relationship between pricing and profitability. As a fence company owner, operations manager, sales manager or salesperson, how do you know the correct price to charge for a residential or commercial fence job, other than the usual cost plus 30%? Before I address this specious formula primarily used for residential bids, first I want to recognize that residential and commercial fence jobs are vastly different animals and for the sake of time, I would like to address pricing and estimating for only residential fencing in this article. One reason that bidding and estimating are all over the board is that, in my opinion, fencers notoriously don’t know their true costs, including overhead and planned profit margins and many, many times bid too low. Also, they have a tendency to “race to the bottom” to try to secure every bid instead of setting a price and sticking to it. The formula that I referenced earlier that is widely used across the US can be summarized something like adding all direct materials and labor costs plus sales commissions and then adding an additional 30% for incidentals and profit. That is usually woefully inaccurate and can lead to financial disaster in short order.

46

APRIL 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

First off, let’s review the components of a fair bid. When bidding, first ask this question, “Are your customers comparing apples to apples? Are you on a level playing field with your competitors? Are your competitors using the same quality materials and reliable installation crews and techniques?” Comparing a Volkswagen to a Rolls Royce is simply not comparing the price of a car, don’t you agree? Also, do they have the same costs of doing business as you do? To do all this you need to know your competition! How large are they, volume wise; what is their respective overhead factor and how does your company stack up against them? Then, you need to ask what are your true costs and how do you calculate them? There are actually four components to your true costs of doing business. · Direct or Variable Costs · Indirect or Fixed Costs · Semi-Variable Costs · Profit Let’s look at them individually. DIRECT COSTS These include any cost directly attributable to the cost of the job. Materials, labor, rental equipment, travel time, change orders and anything else that directly influences the cost. Other costs could be fuel, concrete, sand, clearing and trash removal, etc. FIXED COSTS These are indirect labor costs such as management salaries, sales, office staff, rent or mortgage payments, advertising and marketing expenses, insurance, commissions;

Tom Luby, Business Consultant and Fence Industry Spokesperson

all of the expenses that are rolled up into doing business on a day-to-day basis. SEMI-VARIABLE COSTS These are a mix of direct costs and variable costs; they are costs that are reduced when sales fall but do not go away entirely. Examples include phone lines, travel and entertainment, licenses, permits, etc. PROFIT The amount of profit to plan for is a decision for upper management, but it is usually inversely proportionate to sales volume. The larger the volume, the lower the profit margin needs to be in order to reach success. Historically, profit in this industry can range from a low of 3 – 5% to 10 – 15%. The lower is usually for very large companies that deal with tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales volume. The higher is usually for mid-sized fence contractors. A profit of 20% or more might be for very small one to two crew operations. You must expense all money earned as costs to some job(s) to know your true costs of doing business. Someone must pay for every company expense. Do you know what your break even point is? This is when you have reached a point (in time or dollars) where all of your overhead is paid, either measured by job or for the entire company for the year. Calculating break even points by jobs can be problematic and for smaller jobs is not practical; even larger jobs can be misleading. Usually, break even points are measured in either time or volume of sales. Timewise, most break even points for the fence industry occur

in mid or late fall. October is a fairly common time frame. This can also be calculated by dollars, how much money you need to earn to cover all your indirect or overhead costs for the year. This dollar figure is usually reached in mid or late fall, as well. After you reach your break even point, what then? What is your company’s mission statement? Are you in business to grow without profit and to dominate your market area, or to make money? Once you have reached your break even point, you can choose to do either. Imagine a fence job where your net (direct plus indirect overhead) job cost is $800 total and your bid goal is $1,000. You want to make a net profit of $200. Further, imagine your sales staff discounting 10% to the customer; this cuts your profit in half! Selling the job for $1,000 would result in $200 gross profit, selling the job for a 10% discount, or for a $100 discount of $900, would leave only a $100 Profit, half of the original amount. On the other hand, an industrious and clever sales staff increases your bid by 20%, from a goal of $1,000 to $1,200 by value selling the fence job because you are a superior company with superior products and installers, in effect that salesperson has doubled your profits. The moral of the story is it is very important to know your true costs and bid accordingly. Profit is not a dirty word.

™ Prevent. Protect. The best defence forProlong. your fence.

Yet another important factor in bidding is knowing and understanding your competition. Are your competitors playing fair? Overhead factors can vary greatly in the fence (or any) industry, depending on several factors like size of the company, number of employees, number of locations, true compliance with the rules and laws, especially insurance and tax laws and lastly but most importantly, controlling overhead. These are among the most important tasks for the owner or general manager to handle in order to be successful. Beware of discounting and death by a thousand cuts. Undercutting a competitor is tantamount to war in your market area, so be careful. This is where your best sales people must learn to value sell all of your fence companies products and services to make a fair profit or walk away from the job, period. To know your true overhead factor and include that number in every bid is essential for success of your fence company. Cost plus 30% is often used in the fence industry but that is not accurate for all companies; you need to find your own number and stick to it if you want to make money. Also, remember the three things every customer wants: quality, service, and lowest price. In most cases, you can’t give your customer all three, you must choose two.

At Profit Builders International, Tom Luby has been successful in helping hundreds of fence installers and fabricators, manufacturers, general construction, sales and distribution organizations and many other type companies accomplish a higher level of success and profitability. He has developed a program called the “Roadmap to Success” that can help you do the same for your company at a fraction of the cost of hiring a business consultant to do this for you.

APRIL 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

Costos directos o variables Costos indirectos o fijos Costos semivariables Ganancia

™ Prevent. Protect. The best defence forProlong. your fence.

FENCES FOR FURRY FRIENDS:

The Benefits and How to Help Your Customers Choose One According to the American Pet Products Association’s 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, over 63 million U.S. households own dogs, and these owners are shelling out big money for their four-legged family members. It’s estimated that in 2019, pet owners spent over $75 billion in the pet industry. There are two things we can take away from this: 1) obviously, lots of people have dogs and 2) they’re willing to spend money to take good care of them. This presents an opportunity for the fence industry. In this day and age, people value their pets more than ever as actual members of the family, so we should tap into that idea when considering the residential fence market. We need to understand the importance of dog owners having a fence for their yard and then help them choose the right fence based on the kind of dog (or dogs) they have. Not only can it help hit an area of the market you may be missing, but you’ll also end up with happier customers if their fence functions better in their lives based on what their dog needs. Many shelters, rescue organizations, and responsible breeders require that potential dog owners have a fenced yard to adopt or purchase a dog, and there is a reason for that. It’s one of the most responsible things a person can do as a pet owner to protect not only their pet, but neighbors and their pets, and passersby, too.

THEFT

ANIMAL CONTROL/ WILDLIFE

HEALTH

A fence will allow dogs to go out on their own without the risk of running off, getting close to the road, and possibly hit by a car. This devastating possibility is not only tragic to the family and the dog, but it also presents a danger for motorists. If a driver swerves to miss a dog on the loose, they could easily lose control of their vehicle and cause an accident. If this happens, the owner of the dog will likely be held legally liable. Just as we lock our car doors, equip our homes with alarms, and create passwords to shield our personal information, dog owners should take measures to protect their valuable canine friends. According to the American Kennel Club, about 2 million dogs are stolen each year, and over half of these thefts happen when the dog is in its own yard. A fence is recommended as one way to help prevent this, and the correct kind of fence will keep their pet in and thieves out. Animal authorities will detain a dog if it doesn’t have any identification or if it’s harassing people or other animals like wildlife or livestock. And speaking of wildlife, many wild animals are a risk to dogs in the way of diseases or getting attacked. A fence allows for dogs to run, play, lay in the sun, and you know… dog things. Depending on the breed, dogs need anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours of exercise a day. A fence allows for a secure place for the dog to get some of that on their own – making him or her healthier in the long run.

Fences aren’t one-size-fits-all from any way you look at it, and this goes for helping a dog owner choose a fence, as well. Firstly, a fence that will be containing a dog should absolutely be six feet or higher. Many athletic dogs – even medium sized or smaller – can clear a fence that’s lower than six feet. Dogs can also dig their way out of a fence, so it’s smart to consider lowering the fence into the ground some or including something such as chicken wire beneath the fence. Chain link fence, while an affordable option, runs the risk of enabling a dog to climb out. Depending on the dog, this is something to encourage your customer consider. You’ll also want to help the customer choose a fence with appropriately sized openings, so a dog can’t fit through. Just be sure there’s no way a dog can get over, under, or through a fence, as they will often find a way, if they’re determined enough. When it comes to layout of the fence, be sure to consider blind spots from inside the home. If the owner wants to be able to look out and easily see their pet, make sure to bring that up to them, and test what areas of their yard they can see when looking out from inside. Also point out that fencing in the utilities is a good way to shield them from view but will put the security of their dog at risk if and when a repairman has to come work on them. Encourage them to fence the majority of their yard, but their knowing that you’re taking small things like blind spots into consideration will let the customer you care about their long-term happiness with the investment they’re about to make. The cost of a fence is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that comes with knowing a pet is safe from the many dangers outside the boundaries of its owners’ property. Adding a fence to a property has a wide variety of benefits, as we all know, but closing the sale with dog owners should be an easy one. Help dog owners invest in one of the best things they can do for their beloved furry friends.

by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP Executive Vice President, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute

Never Forget

If you have been around the fence industry for any extended length of time, you probably remember that at the height of the Iraq War there was a wave of patriotism washing over the United States (there were also, of course, many who opposed to that conflict). A large number of people and organizations were committed to making sure that the brave men and women serving in the military at that time would not be treated with the same indifference (and worse) that the returning Vietnam veterans had been a generation ago. The Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute (CLFMI) was among the fence industry organizations that established a program to promote the hiring of veterans. Ours was called the “Hire a Hero Veterans Employment Program.” Unfortunately, the craziness of the past several years, topped off by the global health crisis, has shifted attention away from these efforts to many other things (including the survival of thousands of businesses in the industry!). However, when fence industry companies are asked what their biggest concern about the post-COVID fence marketplace will be, one of the first things they mention is “workforce development and skilled worker shortages.” Maybe we need to take another look at where companies can go to find potential employees. Veterans still present a huge pool of men and women seeking to re-enter the workforce, willing to get retrained to do whatever meets the needs of employers. Take another look at what’s in it for your company to hire veterans. By virtue of their military training, veterans bring an accelerated learning curve to the job, shortening training times and lowering training costs.

Veterans have been exposed to a multi-cultural team, allowing them to assimilate more easily into a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Having been exposed to leadership development in the service, veterans have the capability of moving into supervisory roles more quickly in the workplace. Veterans understand the value of teamwork, making them more dedicated to working effectively with others in their work environment.

Military veterans have performed under intense pressure, giving them the experience and confidence to work within tight time constraints and budgets.

Note: There are hundreds of programs out there trying to match veterans with private-sector jobs. Some are sponsored by the U.S. government, some are private companies, such as recruitmilitary.com.

Veterans have an ingrained respect for procedures, making them easily adaptable to regimented tasks and meticulous adherence to directions.

Veterans have worked with state-of-the-art materials and machinery, making it easy for them to accept and adjust to automation and new technologies. Veterans are conscious of, and have respect for, health and safety standards, a must in the fence industry. Many veterans, especially those wounded in action, have experience in overcoming adversity and are less likely to be discouraged by normal setbacks in the workplace.

Some sectors and companies in the fence industry are still reeling from the effects of the COVID-19 shutdowns and reductions. Others in the industry actually had a good year in 2020 but are still worried about workforce issues. Where will they find installers and other field employees? Who will fill the needed roles as machine operators and heavy equipment drivers? Young people coming out of school have doing virtual learning for more than a year. How many of them were even exposed to opportunities in the fence industry? Veterans can bring a little more maturity, a little more life experience, and a little discipline to whatever position they might have in the workplace. Those qualities offer the chance to reduce employee turnover, one of the biggest cost factors in workforce development. There are a lot of reasons why it is good business to consider hiring veterans. In addition to the tangible benefits, it is also a way to brand your company as a truly equal opportunity employer, willing to reach out and create a win-win situation for these veterans who have shown a willingness to serve their country. But there is more to it than just the bottom line. Hiring veterans is a way to get back some of the “normalcy” we all have been craving this past year. It is a way to give a chance for thousands of hardworking men and women to show what they can do in the private workforce by taking advantage of their military training. The sense of accomplishment they can gain in this industry is a terrific way to say, “Thank You for Your Service.”

Spotting Substance Abuse in the Workplace

Do you have employees who have substance abuse problems? If you do, how would you know? According to the National Safety Council, about 16% of employees live with a substance use disorder. Substance abuse in the workplace occurs across all industry types, with each sector having its own rates of addition and types of substance abused. A report from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) found that workers in the construction industry see the highest rates of heavy alcohol use and alcohol consumption on the job. U. S. Department of Labor (DOL) research has reported on the tremendous negative impact of substance about in the workplace, finding that substance abusers are more like to: • Be absent and/or show up late. • Make mistakes. • Take risks. • Be involved in workplace accidents. • File workers’ compensation claims. Getting a handle on this dangerous and costly problem begins with recognizing the symptoms and identifying possible abusers. How can you tell if an employee is abusing drugs or alcohol? The following performance and behavior problems are common to many workers who abuse alcohol and/or other drugs.

Performance problems include: • Inconsistent work quality • Poor concentration • Reduced productivity • Increased absenteeism and lateness • Unexplained disappearances from the jobsite

Behavior problems include: • Frequent financial problems • Avoidance of friends and colleagues • Overreacting to criticism • Blaming others for own problems and shortcomings

54

APRIL 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

An employee who displays any of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily have a substance abuse problem. There could be other reasons, but it is important to consider this cause. In addition to looking at an employee’s performance and behavior, you should also look at what’s going on around that employee. For example, when there’s a substance abuse problem, there might also be an increase in: •C omplaints from other workers (about mistakes, the employee not doing his/her share of the work, coming in late and leaving early, risk-taking behavior, etc.) •N ear misses and accidents either involving the worker or taking place around the worker •D isputes with or aggressive behavior toward workers and supervisors • Theft from the company and co-workers

The DOL recommends employers establish comprehensive programs to prevent workplace substance abuse. An effective workplace drug program usually establishes a list of procedures to follow concerning illegal drug use, such as: • Testing • Prevention training • Implementing infraction policies • Setting rules and expectations Many addiction experts agree with this structure for employers, however, as more studies uncover the correlation between mental health and addiction, the more evident it becomes that other steps should be taken to fight addiction through training and compassionate understanding. These can include: •T raining employees about the realities and signs of addiction •M otivating employees to support a drug-free workplace  •P romote health and wellness •P rovide options to individuals and families to seek help through different resources and other channels •D iscuss how management referrals and self-referral for assistance are handled •M aintain a safe, healthy, and productive environment for all • Give positive feedback

Management Corner

Spring your Business Forward Many people take advantage of the warmer weather and longer days that spring brings to air out their homes and tackle decluttering and cleaning after a long winter. You can apply the same “spring cleaning” principles to refresh and recharge your business practices. Hopefully you set some goals for your business at the beginning of the year. Spring is the perfect time to hit “pause” to see if you are on track to accomplishing those goals and redirect your efforts if needed. If you didn’t set any 2021 business goals, you can do so now. Here’s a few suggestions to help you get started: REVIEW THE BOOKS As you and your accountant or accounting staff are working on tax preparation, it’s a good time to take a closer look at and reorganize – if needed – your finances to help you make better decisions for the rest of this year: •W hat expenses from last year were possibly unnecessary? Which were profitable and why? •W hat were your sources of revenue and what can you do to improve those? • Are there any assets you are maintaining that you should let go? •A re there any new equipment or inventory you should purchase for improved profitability? REVIEW YOUR CUSTOMERS Analyze your customer list with a focus on growing your base of strong customers and improving overall customer relations: • I dentify your best customers – sometimes this is surprising when you take an objective look. Make sure you don’t take them for granted and ensure you are working to keep and grow that relationship. • E liminate customers on your working list who are no longer a customer or potential customer. Some may have closed, move, consolidated or have a strong loyalty to another provider. Don’t waste energy and resources on continuing to reach out to these. •W hat current customers offer the potential for expanded business from your company? Create a plan to make that happen. • I dentify customers who would be most likely to send referrals or write a positive online review, then develop steps to facilitate this. • D o you have customers on your list who you know are less than 100% satisfied? How can you address this to make them happier? 56

APRIL 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

REVIEW YOUR TEAM This process is similar to your customer review but focuses on your employees and any changes and improvements you need to make to help your team perform better, together. • D o you have any “problem” employees – those who you know have a bad attitude and/or who can’t do the job they were hired to do and show no interest in learning how? They should be part of your spring decluttering. • Identify people who may not be where they need to be in performance level, but who have the right attitude and potential. Put a plan in place to develop them as stronger team members through training, coaching and/or incentives. • Who are your top performers? Have you let them know they are valued? Do you have a structure in place to ensure you are doing everything you can to keep them? If not, this should be a top priority. • Evaluate communication within your organization – does it flow openly from management to the team, and vice versa? All of these are tasks that should be part of your management plan, but spring is a great time to get back on a regular schedule if you have been neglecting them. Think about any other aspects of your business that could benefit from some spring cleaning and add it to the list to make the rest of 2021 more successful.

It is with the greatest sadness that I must communicate that we have lost our first team member within Eagle Fence Distributing to the COVID-19 Virus. On Friday March 5, Michelle Nicholson, who was one of our founding team members at the Alabama Eagle Fence Distributing location, passed away from complications from the COVID-19 virus. Michelle came to work for Eagle Fence Distributing in November 2008 with an already impressive resume in the Fence Industry. As a team member at the Alabama location, Michelle has been instrumental in the growth of this branch and in fact in providing support for the growth story throughout the Eagle Fence Distributing team. Wood Preservation Information for Builders Source: American Wood Protection Association, (www.awpa.com)

Builders and contractors have some pretty big shoes to fill.  They are the critical link between the designers, the local code official, and the owners or residents of the building.  A builder’s reputation is usually based on the quality of the finished product, so the best builders rely on American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) to write the standards for the treated wood products they use in their structures. Here are the answers to some builder-related questions: WHY SHOULD I REQUIRE WOOD TREATED TO AWPA STANDARDS? Besides the fact that most architects and engineers specify AWPA Standards for treated wood, AWPA Standards are the only wood treatment standards listed directly in the IBC and IRC.  AWPA has over 110 years of history in developing treated wood standards.  Our standards are developed in an open, consensus-based, ANSI accredited process to ensure stringent review of performance data while providing due process for all participants.  Most of the world’s experts in wood protection actively serve on our Technical Committees - a level of expertise unmatched elsewhere.

THE BUILDING INSPECTOR SAYS I NEED TO USE A PRESERVATIVE TO COAT THE CUT ENDS OF TREATED WOOD.  WHAT SHOULD I USE? The inspector is probably referring to AWPA Standard M4, which requires the use of borates for interior uses, and copper naphthenate or oxine copper for primarily exterior uses.  For borates, commercial products such as “Bora-Care” may be used, but saturated solutions of borax and/ or boric acid in hot water may also be used.  The only commercially available oxine copper product we’re aware of is called “Outlast Q8 Log Oil”, and it is normally found at log home supply companies.  And finally, copper naphthenate is sometimes found at paint, hardware, and building supply stores, but it can be difficult to locate. A 2% copper solution may be purchased online from Poles, Inc., under the trade name “Tenino.”  It is always a good idea to coat cut or drilled areas of pressure treated wood with a topical preservative to re-establish an envelope of preservative protection.

CAN I USE A BRUSH-APPLIED OR SPRAYED PRESERVATIVE INSTEAD OF PRESSURE TREATED WOOD? A brush-on or spray-on preservative is just a surface treatment. When wood is put into service it is immediately exposed to the rigors of water, decay fungi colonization, termites and UV and visible violet light degradation. The wood will, at first. check (cracks along the grain) at a microscopic level, and later into increasingly wider checks. Although the first openings are microscopic, they are more than adequate to allow these wood destroying fungi past the paint -surface protection to the unprotected wood just below the surface where, once established, will ultimately make the wood unfit for the purpose it was installed. If such a “surface” treatment existed it would be marketed as well as acknowledged by the Forest Products Laboratory or AWPA. Only pressure treated wood penetrates below the surface for more thorough protection of the wood. IS “MOLD RESISTANT” TREATED WOOD THE SAME AS PRESSURE TREATED WOOD? Mold resistant wood is specifically designed to do what it says: resist mold growth. It is not a replacement for pressure treated wood. Mold, although unsightly and a potential source of airborne toxins, is not in itself a very great threat to wood structure and the soundness of wood members. Mold resistant wood should not be used outdoors or in areas expected to be in contact with soil or masonry such as sill plate.  Pressure treated wood has various “Use Categories” that identify the proper use of matching an application with the right level of preservative protection.  CAN WOOD BE PRESERVATIVE TREATED AND FIRE RETARDANT TREATED AT THE SAME TIME? Under AWPA Standards, preservative treatment and fire retardant treatment are two different technologies. Preservatives are expected to protect the wood from decay fungi and termites every day over a long period of time. Fire retardants are expected to remain in the wood and protect it from a one-time event. Some preservatives do impart a degree of fire retardancy, and some fire retardants can act as preservatives to some extent. At this time, there is only one AWPA standardized product which may be used both as a fire retardant and wood preservative, and it is only listed for interior uses. Apart from this, fire retardant treated wood should not be used where preservative treatment is required, nor should preservative treated wood be used when fire retardant treated wood is required. WHAT KIND OF FASTENERS AND CONNECTORS SHOULD I USE IN PRESSURE TREATED WOOD? AWPA’s test methodologies are used to determine relative corrosion rates and cannot be used to estimate corrosion of fasteners and connectors in the field.  For this reason, we suggest using fasteners that meet the requirements of the major model building codes, which specifies hot dip galvanized steel, stainless steel, silicon bronze, or copper fasteners. The model codes also allow for the use of mild steel fasteners for wood treated with inorganic boron (SBX) in dry environments. There are literally hundreds of fastener coatings available, so it is important to follow the fastener manufacturers’ recommendations regarding compatibility of their fasteners with pressure treated wood. The American Wood Protection Association is an international, nonprofit, technical society founded in 1904 to provide a common forum for the exchange of technical information between industry, research and users of treated wood. AWPA is the principal standards-writing body for methods, preservatives, and other technologies which protect wood and wood-based products. Learn more at www.awpa.com.
