Real-World Project Showcases Camaraderie in Fence Industry

Recap of NAFCA’s Aluminum Install Clinic

Last year, the North American Fence Contractors Association (NAFCA) added a capstone project to their annual Fence Training School. It was to be a real-world application of a fencer’s skill set.

“As the event drew near, we realized Fence Training School was not possible this year, so we shifted gears into the capstone project being a free aluminum installation clinic,” explains Clint Iams, NAFCA executive director. “Fence Training School director, Mart Prost found the perfect project NAFCA with the Florida Medal of Honor.”

Long-time NAFCA member and supporter Barrette Outdoor Living had already donated the material for the project: 650 feet of 4-foot commercial-grade ornamental aluminum. “Sean Russell and Taylor Coley of Barrette were incredibly helpful in working with the site engineer to ensure all materials and gates perfectly fit within the various concrete pillars,” Iams says.

With the help of NAFCA member company, Mr. Fence Academy, and other industry leaders, such as A to Z Fence and Modern Fence Technologies, NAFCA was able to provide installation training on two distinctly different methods of aluminum installation. Both installation methods are no dig. One utilizes the i-post system (courtesy of iFenceLLC) while the other utilizes a donut system (provided by Modern Fence Technologiest) over a driven round galvanized post.

A demonstration of expanding foam to set a few posts was also done; this material was donated by NAFCA member company Royal Adhesives and Sealants, an H.B. Fuller company.

“This site was in no way hospitable,” says Iams. “It was a minefield of buried utilities. And, the 650 feet of fence was broken up into 24-foot sections with concrete pillars to be utilized throughout the site. Each termination required wall mount brackets and concrete tapcons.”

“Despite all this, everywhere you looked, people were working together, sharing tips and tricks, and helping each other learn today’s best industry practices,” he says. “We especially appreciate member companies who support our events and make projects like this possible.”

Member companies are:

• AFSCO Fence

• Barrette Outdoor Living

" The day after the project was completed, another potential donor, Duke Energy, visited the site. They were so impressed by the site project and our provided fence that they provided an additional grant of $20,000." ~ Clint Iams

Decks, Railing and FencingLandscape

Interest in outdoor living is higher than ever, and the fence and decking industry is ready. We’re showcasing new products and projects along with events to keep you in the know.

The Art of Collaboration for Growing Deck and Railing Services

Decking and railing services are a promising frontier for business expansion in the fence industry. It’s a good complement to an existing fence company with new, in-demand services.

“We work with many fence companies who are looking to expand their services,” explains Jessica L. Burton, president of Poly Vinyl Creations, a Floridabased company specializing in the specialty outdoor products market, including fence, deck and railing products.. By selling through distributors, Poly Vinyl Creations maintains dedication to customization with fast turn-around time and delivery. “Partnering with specialists in decking and railing can not only enhance your portfolio but also open doors to new client relationships.”

Deck resurfacing is a lucrative way for fence contractors to expand their offerings. Replacing old deck surfaces with materials like vinyl, composite, or wood – each with unique advantages of maintenance and durability – is a great fit for many contractors’ skills. Basic carpentry knowledge enables easy integration of deck resurfacing to boost revenue.

Maintaining the deck, including staining for wood surfaces and pressure washing for any surface, is vital. They not only preserve and enhance a deck’s look and lifespan but also position contractors as full-service outdoor specialists. Service income can be generated by offering these easy services to homeowners and businesses.

“For those hesitant to delve into deck remodeling or who need assistance with full deck building, partnering with deck professionals offers a solution,” Burton says. “This helps expand your service range without in-house skill development, ideal for comprehensive projects needing both fencing and decking.”

Fence contractors have a wealth of opportunities to provide a turnkey solution for clients by branching into landscaping and hardscaping services. “By integrating offerings like custom pavers, arbors, trellises, and other outdoor structures, they can create cohesive and aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces that complement their fencing projects,” Burton explains.

Teaming up with landscape professionals opens doors to comprehensive project handling, where the fencing part of the project seamlessly transitions into broader landscape design. This not only broadens the scope of their business but also caters to the growing demand for comprehensive outdoor living solutions.

Poly Vinyl Creations welcomes collaboration and partnerships with other companies within the fence industry. “My business journey is a testament to the success of diversifying and innovating.”

MoistureShield® Announces Launch of Innovative Composite

Enhanced PVC Decking Product

MoistureShield, a signature brand of Oldcastle® APG, has announced the launch of its StratosTM line of composite enhanced PVC decking — a breakthrough innovation in outdoor flooring.

Featuring the best of both wood composites and PVC decking, Stratos’ groundbreaking Next CoreTM is meticulously designed to be stronger and longer-spanning than any other PVC decking on the market. Stratos features a proprietary acrylic cap that defends against damage from stains, scratches and impact while also resisting fading.

Available in three exclusive colors that are inspired by the Mediterranean landscape, Stratos features a TruTextureTM Surface that provides an authentic wood grain finish and enriched color variegation along with MoistureShield’s CoolDeck® Technology that reduces heat up to 35%.*

Engineered with a 50% greater span, Stratos provides rigidity and more solid feel underfoot compared to conventional PVC and composite decking when installed 24” on center. “Stratos enables installers to set themselves apart by offering a new level of design, installation detail and speed on their jobs,” says Matthew Bruce, vice president of sales, with MoistureShield. “With lower expansion at higher temperatures than standard PVC decking, installers can finish with tighter details across wider spans than ever before possible.”

MoistureShield began offering Stratos in New England and Michigan in mid-March before rolling the product out to a national audience in the summer.

“We couldn’t be prouder to launch this revolutionary decking product,” says Ken O’Neill, president, Barrette Outdoor Living. “MoistureShield has long been committed to staying ahead of new trends and Stratos is yet another example of our ability to manufacture a product that is poised to change the industry.”

* Compared to standard capped PVC composites in similar color. Learn more at MoistureShield.com.

MoistureShield® Launches InstaDeckTM and New Railing Offerings

MoistureShield, a signature brand of Oldcastle® APG, has introduced InstaDeck, an outdoor flooring system comprised of heavy-duty plastic tiles that easily snap together to create a foundation for a freestanding, ground-level deck.

InstaDeck tiles can be assembled using minimal tools on any level flat surface, including grass, concrete, existing patio surfaces and gravel. The product utilizes an integrated fastening system that allows compatible MoistureShield composite decking to be secured into place without the use of screws.

“InstaDeck is an innovative platform that can be used on its own, in unique low to the ground scenarios and even in tandem with Belgard® pavers for a mixed material application,” says Patrick Ianni, vice president of customer operations and product management, with Barrette Outdoor Living. “It’s a game changer for those looking for an easy and cost-effective way to better define their outdoor living space.”

Two new railing offerings have also been introduced into MoistureShield’s product portfolio for 2024. FathomTM Steel Railing is available with vertical square balusters or horizontal rods in two colors. Featuring a premium powder coat, Fathom panels come factory welded and fully assembled with posts that feature pre-attached brackets for ease of installation.

MoistureShield also added a satin black color option to its premium NavigatorTM line of Solid Core composite railing to align with recent black exterior design trends being seen in new home construction and home remodeling. With a robust material composition offering the look of painted wood, Navigator fights damage from moisture, rot, insects and other harmful elements and is finished with an acrylic cap to defend against scratching and impact.

“The expansion of our railing systems has enabled us to offer contractors and homeowners a complete pairing of products that makes the decision process easier, purchasing more streamlined and support more consistent,” says Matthew Bruce, vice president of sales, MoistureShield.

9 Questions

to Help Your Customers Choose the Best Deck Railing

The right railing helps complete the look of a deck while also influencing views and functionality. And with so many options for style, color, infills, and more, Chase Moritz, director of marketing and communication with Envision Outdoor Living Products, says there’s no shortage of opportunity to create a truly unique look for each outdoor space. Envision Outdoor Living Products manufactures a wide range of high-quality, beautiful decking, railing, and accessories for pros and consumers. To help your customers narrow down the choices, Moritz recommends this series of simple questions covering functionality, style tastes, codes, and other factors:

PROJECT PARAMETERS

First, factor in the basics:

1. What is the required height in your area? The code will call for 36-inch or 42-inch.

2. Does the deck have a lot of angles? If there are level runs with angles, certain styles of railing will be more user-friendly. Aluminum railings, for example, are the easiest to install on level angles. Composite or cellular PVC railings also can be used but may require a larger post sleeve at the angle. The degree of angles is much more limited with vinyl railings.

3. What are the surroundings? Is there a view they want to maintain? This will eliminate certain bulkier rail styles and can indicate a sleeker infill style.

4. What is the budget? From a materials standpoint, in general, vinyl railings tend to be the most affordable, then steel, then composite and cellular PVC, and then aluminum.

In terms of infill styles, square balusters tend to be more budget-friendly and then round balusters; glass panels and cable railing are more premium. But you also can mix and match to meet both budget and style needs.

5. What is the location? Coastal areas need railing materials that can withstand the salty, moist air, so vinyl, composite, and aluminum are a better option than steel.

AESTHETICS

Next, weigh aesthetic preferences:

6. Will the deck have lighting? A two-piece top rail will provide the most labor-friendly application of LED wiring. A two-piece design also makes it easier to access the lighting in the future should it need to be repaired.

7. Will the deck be used for frequent entertaining? If so, a drink rail may be a great fit, as it provides a flat surface for placing drinks and small plates.

8. What is the home’s style? Though there are no official rules, certain types of railings pair better with particular home styles. For example, an ultra-modern house will likely look best with sleeker, slimmer top rails and balusters or with cable rail infill.

9. Is the desired look bold or blended? The choice to match railing to decking or to use railing as a pop of detail comes down to personal preference. One way to help customers decide is to use an online deck visualizer tool, where they can experiment with decking and railing colors and styles to see what appeals and looks best. If your customers are still having trouble choosing a railing, Moritz suggests having them look at examples. Most manufacturers have idea guides and project galleries from which to get inspired.

Barrette Outdoor Living® Launches EncloSureTM and Announces New Updates for Select RDI® Railings

Barrette Outdoor Living®, a division of Oldcastle® APG, launched EncloSure, a DIY-friendly aluminum screen enclosure solution that enables homeowners to enjoy being outdoors while offering protection against insects and the elements.

Featuring a premium powder coat, EncloSure utilizes high-quality screening with flat spline technology that ensures screens stay in place even in the windiest conditions. The system can install into an existing covered patio, deck or upper balcony and offers an optional railing infill kit, screen door and in-swing kit.

“With so many homeowners continuing to redefine their outdoor living space, EncloSure is another option in our product portfolio that can create an extra place for entertaining while also providing increased privacy,” says Patrick Ianni, vice president of customer operations and product management, with Barrette Outdoor Living.

The company also made two notable updates in its RDI Railing line — including a 42-inch high panel for its award-winning ElevationTM Rail and the addition of a Satin Black color option to its premium Transform® Composite Railing.

“The availability of a 42-inch height makes this innovative cable railing viable for use in commercial and multi-family applications,” says Ianni. Elevation Rail features the patent-pending OneTenTM built-in centralized tension system — a mechanism that eliminates tensioning each cable individually and decreases the number of seasonal adjustments.

The introduction of Satin Black to Transform Composite Railing was a decision that allows this product to align with recent design trends being seen in new home construction and home remodeling, such as windows with black grids and trim.

With a robust material composition offering the look of painted wood, Transform fights damage from moisture, rot, insects and other harmful elements and is finished with an acrylic cap to defend against scratching and impact.

RDI® Railing Launches New Website, Furthering Commitment to Brand

RDI® Railing has launched a new website — rdirail.com — along with updates to all of its social media feeds. The refreshed branding and online presence are further commitments to this premium railing brand.

For more than 30 years, RDI Railing has been a leading innovator in outdoor and indoor railing products, offering a wide range of materials, designs and profiles that feature more than 20 patents. The brand offers composite, vinyl, aluminum and steel railing along with outdoor decorative accents that include pergolas, decorative screen panels, lattice and screen enclosure systems.

“RDI Railing has long delivered the perfect balance of beauty and function,” says Matthew Bruce, vice president of sales, Oldcastle APG.

NADRA Offers Deck Evaluation and Inspection Certification

“It’s exciting to see the brand continue to stand behind its guiding principle of delivering tangible benefits to homeowners and pros alike while continuing to push the envelope in developing award-winning, innovative products.”

The new website inspires homeowners, designers and builders while simplifying the process for selecting and buying materials. Moreover, the site helps advance projects with ease by providing access to experienced contractors though the company’s trusted network. “The new site also offers an enhanced level of lead generation which will greatly benefit our customers,” says Bruce.

For architects, contractors and property managers, the website includes all the necessary resources needed to provide superior service,

including marketing materials; installation instructions and videos; CAD files; BIM models and product spec information.

“Streamlined navigation was top of mind when we were designing the new structure and flow of the site,” says Mark Brown, senior marketing manager, Oldcastle APG. “We wanted homeowners and pros to easily find the extensive resources we have available.”

NADRA, the North American Deck and Railing Association, is now approved for InterNACHI 4 CEU’s, ICC for .40 credits and ASHI 4 CEU’s. This program will allow the industry professional the ability to safely evaluate a deck. A new app/mobile form is being developed specifically for industry professionals as a comprehensive tool to be used to properly assess the safety issues of a deck. A beta (testing) version of this app will be available to NADRA members who have gone through this certification program.

After the deck evaluation class, the individual will understand how to analyze the following deck components, issues, and more:

• Stairs

• Footings and posts

• Joists

• Joist connections

• Girders

• Ledger connections

• Deck boards

• Handrail assemblies and guards

• Recognize proper and improper fasteners

• Assess hardware or material corrosion

• Review of the safety standards of all decks, stairs and guards structures

Sanctuary, Self-Care and Sustainability Drive Exterior Design in 2024

Over the past several years, backyards have become much more than spaces for weekend barbecues. They’re sanctuaries where people can decompress from their increasingly hectic lives and gather safely with family and friends to celebrate life’s special moments. As we move into warmer weather, the allure of the great outdoors continues to captivate homeowners, inspiring many to reimagine their own outdoor spaces with a focus on connecting the restorative benefits of nature with cutting-edge innovation and sustainability.

“Countless studies have shown that exposure to nature can decrease stress, anxiety and fatigue, increase length of sleep, and improve mood,” says Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing and ESG development for Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of composite decking and railing and a leading brand of high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products. “As more homeowners recognize the positive impact of the great outdoors on their overall health, wellness and enjoyment, the value of outdoor living spaces will continue to rise.”

With self-care an increasing priority, it’s no surprise that creating a sense of sanctuary tops the list of trends expected to influence exterior design in 2024. According to the experts at Trex, following are five trends poised to shape the way we live, unwind, and entertain in the great outdoors in the year ahead:

1. Restorative Retreats

Creating a restorative backyard retreat can be as simple as turning a cozy corner into a reading nook by adding plush cushions and pillows. Or, with a little more budget, you can transform a deck into a tranquil space for yoga or meditation outfitted with comfortable seating, string lights, speakers for playing soothing sounds, and lots of lush plants and greenery. Products like fencing, privacy screens and lattice can also enhance a sense of sanctuary.

And don’t forget the space beneath the deck, especially if it’s elevated. With the addition of an under-deck drainage system to keep the area below the deck dry, this can be the perfect place for a hot tub, cold tub, sauna or outdoor dressing room. Using an integrated network of troughs and downspouts, the Trex® RainEscape® system uniquely installs above the joists of a deck’s foundation, allowing for the safe and seamless addition of electrical and gas lines to power ceiling fans and lighting, as well as outdoor kitchen and entertainment components so homeowners can create an outdoor oasis with the same function and finishes as a room inside the home.

2. Natural and Neutral

From Benjamin Moore® to Valspar®, the color experts have made their predictions for the year, with nature-inspired hues set to dominate home décor both inside and out. Demand for light, neutral decking is up as evidenced in the adoption of the recently introduced Trex Transcend® Lineage™ and Trex Signature® decking lines. Featuring hues inspired by some of the country’s most picturesque natural settings, from Biscayne and Carmel to Rainier and Whidbey, along with the most authentic wood aesthetics to date, these high-performance, lowmaintenance composite decking options provide the perfect backdrop for a neutral outdoor palette.

“Homeowners are embracing the elegance of a more minimalist palette, opting for cleaner lines and materials that create a harmonious and modern outdoor ambiance,”

32 APRIL 2024 | FENCE NEWS USA

explains Adkins. “Using complementary flooring materials from indoors to outside creates a sense of seamless continuity. For homes with premium hardwood floors inside, composite decking in light natural tones, such as those in our new Signature and Lineage lines, offer perfect pairings for achieving this unified look.”

A shift from high contrast to homeowners using cohesive colors on exterior accents like cladding, trim and windows is also anticipated. This approach creates a timeless foundation that affords homeowners the freedom and flexibility to customize and personalize the look of their outdoor spaces from season to season or year to year with fresh furnishings and accessories.

3. Sustainable Selections

As sustainability remains a major focus, demand for eco-friendly materials will continue to rise. Made from up to 95% recycled plastic film and reclaimed industrial wood scrap, Trex composite decking leads the category in sustainability. Trex also offers composite deck railings along with sleek, stylish aluminum railings made with 40% recycled material. Trex® Outdoor Furniture is made from recycled milk jugs, material that becomes infinitely reusable in the manufacturing process. The brand also recently introduced a line of solar-powered railing post caps that harness the energy of the sun to deliver as much as 19 hours of illumination without any electricity or wiring.

“People are more conscious than ever of their environmental impact and are looking to create outdoor spaces that last without leaving a lasting impact on the environment,” notes Adkins.

4. Destination Spaces

Inspired by their own travels as well as the luxurious lifestyles featured on TV and in magazines, today’s homeowners have become increasingly fluent in creating destinationstyle outdoor spaces that are calibrated and customized to their own homes, budgets and lifestyles.

A great place to start is with a foundation that looks luxurious while also being durable and easy to maintain. Composite decking delivers on all counts. Warrantied to last up to 50 years, high-performance offerings won’t fade, stain, warp or crack and never need to be sanded, stained or refinished, making composite decking an ideal choice for homeowners seeking the rich look of wood without all the labor- and time-intensive upkeep.

Once you’ve built the base for an outdoor space, furnish it with resort-inspired décor, then bring the look home with a stylish pergola for shade, a fire pit table for warmth and ambiance,

and lots of plants to create the look and feel of a glamorous getaway.

5. DIY: Design It Yourself

Having been raised on home makeover TV shows and inspirational social channels like Pinterest and Instagram, today’s newest homeowners are entering the design process with more knowledge than any previous generation. They also have access to a virtually endless array of digital tools and information, making it easier than ever to bring their deck visions to life.

“DIY doesn’t mean doing it alone,” Adkins adds. “From TV and social media to online videos and websites, there are countless resources available to help with the process of designing and building an outdoor space. Our Trex Academy site, for instance, offers a comprehensive library of step-by-step how-to guides and videos. We also offer a robust mix of tools, including an AR Deck Visualizer, a decking color selector, a materials cost calculator, and a user-friendly deck designer tool, that make designing a deck easy and fun – for professional contractors and homeowners.”

The Finishing Touch: Nantucket Post Caps

For contractors seeking to add a touch of elegance and durability to their outdoor construction projects, Nantucket Cedar Post Caps offer a premium solution that combines aesthetics with functionality.

Nantucket Post Cap was founded in 1992 on Nantucket Island in a garage by a world-renowned furniture maker. As business grew well beyond sales on Nantucket Island, the logistics of shipping raw material to the island and finished product back off, proved too costly. In 2000, the business was sold and moved to Vermont, where operations continue today.

One of the standout features of Nantucket Post Caps is their timeless, natural beauty and classic appeal, that exude warmth and traditional charm, enhancing the overall aesthetics of fences, decks, pergolas, and other outdoor structures. In addition, the types of wood used by Nantucket are naturally resistant to rot, decay and insect damage, providing a durable, long-lasting installation.

“Quality furniture construction is in our blood, and that passion goes into every cap,” says Michael Hale, with Nantucket Post Cap. “All of our post caps are made with the highest quality material and crafted by our experienced woodworkers. We use only the finest Clear-All-Heart California redwood, Clear Western Red Cedar, and African Mahogany. Every post cap is sanded to a furniture grade finish and carefully inspected before shipping out to any of our nationwide dealers. You’ll find Nantucket Post Cap products on many of the highest quality fences and decks across the country.”

Nantucket Post Caps are designed with contractors in mind, offering ease of installation and customization options to suit a variety of project requirements. A wide variety of styles is available, and Hale says Nantucket is the only manufacturer who can build a post cap for any size post from 3½ inches up to 24-inch square. They can match custom profiles and odd sizes such as 3 ½-inch x 8-inch square.

In addition to expertly crafted wood post caps, Nantucket also offers metal post caps, finials, decorative accessories, arbors, pergolas and gates. “All of our products receive the same Nantucket attention to quality craftsmanship we are known for,” adds Hale.

ASK FOR NANTUCKET SECONDS

Nantucket’s meticulous attention to detail and quality means occasionally caps are made that do not fit the Nantucket standard for quality and appearance. These are caps that have a small chunk of wood come out, which we fill in and sand smooth, or a small pin knot. These caps are still great quality, and absolutely perfect for painting or staining. When stained, the knots or wood filler can show through the stain, but the product is otherwise perfect. They call these “seconds” caps and sell them at a steep discount. These are not always available in every style, but contractors can inquire anytime to see what second caps are available in the needed post size.

Millboard Decking Achieves WUI Certification

Millboard’s Enhanced Grain and Weathered Oak decking products have achieved certification for use in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas across the country.

With the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires, having WUI-certified decking products is necessary for homeowners looking to build in regions prone to fire. The WUI refers to areas where human development meets natural landscapes, creating a significant risk for wildfires.

Millboard’s composite decking materials have undergone rigorous testing to meet the stringent requirements for the certification. The decking materials are made from polyurethane resin with mineral stone flour commonly referred to as resin mineral composite (RMC). It is unlike wood plastic composites (WPC) which can absorb water and swell, causing algae to grow on the boards, and attract pests. Millboard decking contains no wood or plastic.

“We want to help you provide those moments with your friends and family that enrich living life outside, with beauty and quality,” says Martin Stevenson, marketing director of Millboard. “Our team remains committed to delivering innovative products that exceed customer expectations.”

Key features of Millboard’s WUIcertified decking materials include:

Fire-resistant properties: Millboard’s composite decking materials are engineered with fireresistant technology, providing a crucial barrier to slow the spread of flames.

Durability: Designed to withstand the challenges of wildland environments, Millboard decking materials offer exceptional durability, ensuring long-lasting performance in the face of changing weather conditions.

Low maintenance: Millboard decking requires minimal maintenance.

Esthetic appeal: In addition to their protective qualities, Millboard’s decking materials boast a wide range of styles and finishes, allowing homeowners to enhance

the beauty of their outdoor spaces.

Millboard continues to contribute to the safety and resilience of communities facing the threat of wildfires. This WUI certification underscores the company’s dedication to providing innovative solutions that address the evolving challenges associated with urban-wildland interfaces.

Save America’s Trees and Project Time and Money with Natures Composites’ Ready-to-Install Fencing Collections

Natures Composites has introduced a new, patented collection of sustainable and ready-to-install composite fencing products that will help fencing professionals transform any outdoor space.

Natures Composites (NC) was founded in Wyoming nearly two decades ago with a vision to develop sustainable products that look better, last longer, and cost less than traditional outdoor materials. “With an unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility, we embarked on a mission to develop a proprietary sustainable composite formula utilizing wheat straw, a by-product derived from wheat grain harvesting,” explains Brent Weybright, national sales manager with Natures Composites. “Our primary goal is to harness the abundant annually renewable materials found throughout the United States, offering an eco-friendly alternative to wood in conventional composite materials. These products look better, last longer, and cost less than traditional outdoor materials.”

NC’s collection delivers a wood-like feel and look without the maintenance required by wood, including seasonal painting, staining, or sealing. Weybright says these composite products will not splinter, rot, or crack over time due to sun exposure, weather changes or insects. Designed to save you time and money, the carpentry-free installation process of these pre-drilled systems is easy to follow no matter your skill level, ensuring faster builds and easier training for your team.

Weybright highlighted the NC Collections:

NATURES COMPOSITES MODERN FENCING COLLECTION

traditional or shadowbox fence systems, which are engineered as ready-toinstall and user-friendly. Since all necessary hardware is included in these systems, once posts are buried in the ground, only a screwdriver is required to complete installation.

NATURES COMPOSITES COMMERCIAL GRADE COLLECTION

Ready-to-install and designed to look the same on both sides to be neighbor-friendly, it presents a variety of contemporary fences that fuse style and functionality. Offered in four wood-inspired colors, the collection includes composite fullprivacy and semi-privacy fences, as well as a diverse selection of mixed material options. These fencing options integrate a variety of materials, including steel cable, nautical marine rope, artificial green ivy, welded wire, and even printed screens, making it easier than ever to build a customer’s dream fence.

The design of the composite boards features air pocket cavities which enables best-in-industry noise reduction (STC rated at 24 by Intertek USA suggests a reduction of over 75% of perceived loudness). Zach Romero

VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND MARKETINGBLACKLINE HHP with

A layoff became the turning point for Zach Romero’s career. After his job ended in the aerospace industry, his career with Blackline HHP began. As vice president of sales and marketing, Zach uses his strength of attention to detail to strategically position the company. Their proprietary formula for black vinyl fencing allows it to maintain color and durability through the years.

YOUR CAREER PATH SEEMS TO HAVE POSITIONED YOU WELL FOR A CAREER WITH BLACKLINE HHP.

I was an inspector with several companies years ago, and then I worked in the aerospace industry. I was laid off from there in 2009. I think my attention to detail is a great advantage today, whether it be the actual product quality or the little things when it comes to communicating and creating relationships with customers.

Blackline HHP specializes in black vinyl fences. The HHP in our name stands for high heat performance. Our proprietary formula allows it to stay true to color and durable. Our customers are looking for a particular outcome and maintaining our focus on details allows us to maintain our high standard of quality.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT YOUR JOB?

The owners of Blackline HHP have made all the difference in my career. They are the main reason I stuck around for a while and then I grew to love the industry. I saw there was a career in the fencing industry and with BlacklineHHP. I also like that we are a very niche product. I enjoy being the go-to guy for our specific products.

WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS OF THE FENCE INDUSTRY, IN YOUR OPINION?

The public’s need for security and aesthetic upgrades to their properties makes this industry stable. I also like how those in the industry work well together; it seems to have gone to a higher level in the last few years.

SINCE YOU’VE BEEN IN SALES FOR 15 YEARS, WHAT WOULD YOU DESCRIBE AS KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL SALES CAREER?

Being able to listen to your customer first and foremost; and then realizing that, at times, you might not be the best fit for them. You must have a network in place so that you can direct customers to where they should go if it’s not you.

WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS OF BLACKLINE HHP?

Our unique formula has proven performance. We have created a reputation in our industry that has allowed our customers to become great ambassadors for us.

WHO HAS HELPED PROVIDE YOU WITH MOTIVATION OR MENTORSHIP?

The pastor of my church and my grandfather have helped me. They have similar work ethics and outlooks for careers. My grandfather lived halfway across the country and would help me out over the phone, but my pastor became the present father figure in my life who pushed me and taught me a good work ethic. He often said, “Success cometh to those who worketh their guts out.”

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY WHEN YOU’RE NOT ON THE JOB?

I love spending time with my family and enjoying my first grandson. I have a second grandson on the way. My wife and I also enjoy going on cruises and now that our kids are older, we are starting to do that more often.

DoorBird and Homematic IP: Making Access Control More Convenient than Ever Before

eQ-3 AG and Bird Home Automation GmbH have announces a strategic partnership Beginning in the fourth quarter of 2024, extensive cloud-to-cloud integration will make it possible to easily connect DoorBird video door stations to a Homematic IP smart home system.

Thanks to DoorBird’s direct integration into the Homematic IP ecosystem, it will be even easier and more convenient for users to be able to control access to their home. The Homematic IP App sends out push notifications to smartphones at all times and to all locations, letting users know when someone is ringing at the door. Audio and video signals are transmitted from the DoorBird door station to the Homematic IP App in real time so users can communicate directly with visitors. If required, the door can be opened with just one tap.

Security is the top priority for both partners. All communication in both systems is only transmitted in encrypted form in accordance with the latest standards. The Homematic IP Cloud is hosted exclusively on servers in Germany and is thus subject to the highest security standards. Compliance to such standards is checked on a continual basis. The VDE (Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies) has certified the smart home system seven times in a row in the areas of protocol, IT, and data security, to ensure fulfillment of the highest security standards.

In order to give users even more options to easily and conveniently design their smart home to their liking, eQ-3 continues to expand its Whole Home System range, which already consists of more than 150

products. The company’s proprietary product portfolio is rounded off by select partnerships.

Aside from DoorBird, compatible systems include Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Philips Hue, EZVIZ, VEKA Texino, and Ease®.Cloud-to-cloud integration of DoorBird and Homematic IP will be available starting in Q4 2024.

EMBRACING CHANGE:

STRATEGIES FOR A RESILIENT TEAM

Change is inevitable, especially in today’s dynamic, competitive work environment. As a leader, your role extends beyond merely implementing change; you also have a responsibility to guide your teams through transitions with empathy and effectiveness. Here are practical strategies you can use to help your team cope with change in a positive way:

1. Prepare Employees for Change.

Clearly communicate the vision and reasons for the change. Use plain language to inspire your team and help them see the bigger picture. When employees understand that change is inevitable, they become more receptive to it. Equip your team with any new, necessary skills by providing targeted training sessions and encouraging cross-team mentorship. A well-prepared and informed team is more likely to embrace change confidently.

2. Remind Employees Their Input is Valued.

Fear of losing control often accompanies change. Remind your team they are part of the change process by encouraging open dialogue where team members can voice concerns and actively participate in implementing the planned changes. When employees feel heard and valued, they become active agents of change.

3. Recognize Employee Resilience.

Your team has weathered changes before. Acknowledge your team’s resilience by highlighting periods of change – both internal and external – where they successfully adapted. This will reinforce their ability to navigate future changes. Provide positive feedback and celebrate small wins during the transition to help your team feel motivated.

4. Provide Proper Training.

Change often requires new skills, whether it’s a new piece of equipment or a new technique or process being implemented. Invest in ongoing training programs to ensure your team has the tools they need to succeed. Be sure to tailor training to team member’s unique needs. Personalized support will build confidence and minimize resistance.

5. Designate Leaders to Ease the Transition.

Appoint a change champion or leader(s) within your team. These individuals can serve as a bridge between leadership and employees. Their role includes addressing concerns, providing updates, and reinforcing the change narrative. Keeping everyone informed about progress as well as any setbacks will create transparency, which builds trust and reduces uncertainty.

Remember, change does not have to be a disruption. If you plan ahead and prepare your team, change can be an opportunity for growth.

84 Lumber Celebrates New, Bigger Sarasota, Florida, Location

84 Lumber, the nation's largest privately held building materials supplier, recently celebrated the opening of its new location at 1315 17th Street East, Palmetto, Florida.

Formerly a Ringling Bros. property, the location is comprised of three buildings on 10 acres, with each building at approximately more than 20,000 square feet. The entire location employs over 60 associates. 84 Lumber had been operating in Bradenton, Florida, since 2006 before the relocation.

"Our Florida presence has had a great impact on our business for many years," says 84 Lumber owner and CEO Maggie Hardy. "Outgrowing our Bradenton location is proof that we are not only determined to bring in more business but that we are dedicated to doing everything we can to make our customers successful and satisfied. This new store location will allow us to continue to give this market exactly what it needs."

"We are very excited," says Buzz Bowman, the store's general manager. "This larger footprint will provide us with the tools to continue growing in the market and we look forward to a bright future ahead."

During the ceremony, 84 Lumber donated $100,000 to the Fisher House Foundation's Bay Pines Fisher House. Fisher Houses have provided free, temporary housing to more than 450,000 military and veterans' families since the program's inception in 1990. There are currently 96 Fisher House homes across the U.S. and Europe, with dozens more planned or under construction.

The organization is currently working on opening a second Fisher House home, allowing military families and veterans staying at the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center a place to stay while loved ones are receiving care. The second house will allow Bay Pines to provide more than 9,000 nights of lodging for families each year, saving more than a million dollars annually in lodging and transportation costs. This donation is 84 Lumber's continued symbol of support and dedication in giving back to our veterans and military service members.

Grow Your Business with Financing Plug & Play Customer Financing Methods

Last year, I bought my children coloring books online. At checkout, I was asked whether I wanted to pay $42 at that time or make installment payments over the next six months.

That’s a true story. And it is evidence that consumers want the ability to pay for things over time.

Here are a few facts about financing:

• Salespeople who offer financing have a 20 – 30% higher close rate

• Homeowners who finance spend up to 30% more on the project

• Almost 80% of homeowners want to finance a portion of their project

• Are you offering financing. If not, why?

THE FINANCING PUNCH LIST

Whether you offer financing now or are considering it, you need to know how to implement it into your sales process. Don’t just sign up for something and hope it works. My goal is not to convince you to have financing available, but to make money and grow your business by using it.

Here are actionable steps to take today to start selling more tomorrow:

• Add financing to your website. Put this on the front page of your website. People spend a few seconds on a website and you need to catch their attention quickly.

• Tell every customer about all your payment options. You’re not selling financing, you’re selling a fence. But, you want your company to be the easiest one to buy from. Let your customer know early in the sales process about every way they can pay you.

• Add financing options to every estimate. What is easier to digest: $10,000 or $250 a month? American households operate on a monthly budget. Most don’t have thousands of dollars to spare, but they still want a fence. If it fits within their monthly budget, they’re more likely to get the work done. Don’t assume that because they live in a big house they have money stuffed in their couch. Or, if they drive an older car, that they can’t afford you. They’ve done their homework already.

• Accept credit cards. Find a credit processor and accept credit cards. It’s how Americans buy just about everything.

• Run rehash campaigns. Don’t waste your leads. You’ve already spent hundreds of dollars getting them and spent hours working on their estimate. They probably didn’t buy from you because of the price. Follow up each month with people you already gave estimates to and remind them you offer affordable monthly payments, or tell them about a holiday special, or a new discount; anything that re-engages them.

Mention financing in your marketing. Include it in your advertising, flyers, Google business page, etc. Modernize reported in their “Homeowner Insights 2023” that almost 80% of homeowners wish to finance a portion of their project. If you’re not marketing that you offer financing, you’re likely missing out on a lot of qualified leads and losing business to your

This punch list features easy ways for you to grow your business, save time and money, and close more sales. Fencing companies are selling hundreds of thousands more each year just by offering financing to their customers the

What could an increase like that mean to your business. What would it mean to your sales team and their commission checks?

If you’re offering financing now, what can you do to improve it? Take time to investigate this and see if there is a potential for improving your financing options to better serve your customers.

Veterans in Fence Creates Challenge Coin Tradition

At FENCETECH ’24, a new tradition was born. The American Fence Association presented many veterans in the fence industry with a special gift: an AFA challenge coin.

In the military, challenge coins are small emblems used to convey unit pride and camaraderie and they serve as a powerful tool to recognize mission success and leadership. They have a similar purpose in AFA: to welcome and connect industry veterans.

While the origin of challenge coins is a mystery, they’ve evolved into tokens of recognition, unit pride and esprit de corps. At AFA events, veterans can be presented with a coin bearing the AFA logo on one side and a solution service member on the reverse. It’s a recognition of service and a tangible reminder that they’re not just industry colleagues, but part of a broader industry fraternity forged in service.

AFA president Brad Howard (Army) presented Veterans in Fence chair Brian Boutte (Navy) with a challenge coin in recognition of his service both the country and the association. “Brian represents the very best of veterans helping veterans, and it is an honor to give him an AFA challenge coin for his efforts to support workforce development and mental health initiatives in the industry,” says Howard.

The Veterans in Fence Special Interest Group is free with an AFA membership and fosters a path to connect with other veterans in the fence industry and stay up to date on event information posted in the community.

AI (artificial intelligence) has been around for longer than most people realize. The concept and the term go back to the 1950’s, when scientists proposed the idea of creating machines that could perform tasks that would typically require human intelligence.

We’ve been seeing small examples of what it can do in places like action movies, video games, and new-age robots that can not only perform certain tasks but can also learn as they go; think The Terminator. While many of us have seen these early AI examples and been impressed, we all thought it would be a long time before AI was going to be a factor in our daily lives.

How wrong we were.

AI is, and has been, used for years, but the public is just now seeing what it can do. For example, the use of artificial intelligence in the US military has been evolving over several decades. AI technologies have been incorporated into various military systems and applications, including autonomous vehicles, surveillance, logistics, decision support systems, and more.

Just a few years ago, we watched movie stars going to jail because they had paid people to take tests and write papers for their children, making sure their grades were good enough to get into the most prestigious schools. In today’s world, maybe some of the papers would have been AI created, and harder to trace.

And, here is the thing that the fence industry needs to realize: AI is already being used in our industry, and it has a chance to be a real gamechanger in the very near future.

Here are a few examples of AI at work right now.

Understand It or Not, AI is Already Changing Everything, Even the Fence Business

Manufacturing

• AI robots are doing such things as assembly, welding, and material handling with increased precision and cost-savings.

• Companies are also using AI to analyze equipment data and precisely determine when machines are going to fail, allowing for preventive maintenance, less downtime, and higher productivity.

• AI systems in manufacturing plants can better monitor energy consumption and determine ways to reduce both cost and the company’s carbon footprint.

Distribution and Supply

• AI is powering driverless vehicles for delivery.

• AI is enhancing on-time delivery of products by optimizing inventory management.

• AI is reducing supply chain risk by using demand forecasting and logistics planning.

Construction and Fencing

• AI is upgrading security through sensors integrated into fences, increasing detection, analyzing time, and triggering alerts to the appropriate security personnel and systems.

• AI algorithms can improve the operation of smart fences which have energy-saving features like LED lights or solar-powered components, leading to reduced energy consumption and lower costs.

• AI applications can let customers visualize different fence styles and materials for their projects, enhancing customer decision-making and satisfaction, leading to repeat business and referrals.

• AI-powered sensors on fences can monitor weather conditions, including humidity, pressure, temperature, and other factors, providing early warning information.

In the past, the fence industry has been slow to adopt, or adapt to, new technologies that have come along. Some of the reluctance to make use of these technologies comes from the fact that a major part of the industry – the actual installation of the fences – remains a hands-on, manpowerintensive operation. That’s understandable. But the fence industry is moving through another generation of owners, managers, and craftspeople, almost all of whom have grown up using technology in every part of their lives. They are not afraid to try new technologies that will help them be more successful in the plant, in the warehouse, or in the field.

And, think about this: what if there was a technology that could make those installers safer? Or more productive? Or able to deliver more projects on-time?

AI is one of those technologies that can do all those things. Don’t wait to find out how it can help your company. Start looking into AI now and be ahead of the learning curve on this one. You may not know much about it now, but you will in the near future.

Safety Gate

Fence News is committed to raising awareness of gate safety. It will take a combined effort on the part of all fence professionals to address potential safety hazards.
Working with communities, schools, and businesses, we can improve gate safety around the world.

Alex’s Law Aims to Enhance Gate Safety in California

After many months of collaborative work by the American Fence Association and raising awareness around gate safety with The Hummingbird Alliance, Alex’s Law was introduced recently by California State Assembly Member, Damon Connolly.

Alex’s Law (also known as Bill 2149) was written in response to the tragic death of Alex Quanbeck and will work to make gates safer in the state of California. The bill will improve the safety regulations for any automatic vehicular gate, manual vehicular gate, or any gate that is greater than 48” wide or 84” tall.

Eric Quanbeck, Alex’s father, says, “In honor of Alex, we started The Hummingbird Alliance, a not-forprofit organization dedicated to improving school safety through education and advocacy. Tragically, we’ve discovered numerous child fatalities from gate failures that could have been prevented with safety devices.”

“No family should have to endure the pain of an utterly preventable death,” says Dayna Quanbeck, Alex’s mother. “We are proud that Alex’s Law will not only implement common-sense gate safety regulations, it will also save lives. Beyond our home state of California, the work will continue to improve gate safety throughout the US.”

Alex’s Law requires any automatic vehicular gate, manual vehicular gate, or gate larger than 48” wide and 84” high to meet specified industry standards and requires that the owner of a regulated gate have it inspected on or before July 1, 2025, and re-

inspected at least once every five years with written certification by a professional. To meet specified standards:

• The gate must not fall more than 45 degrees from a vertical plane when detached.

• The gate must not move under its own weight.

• Any rolling wheels must be covered.

• The gate must have a positive stop, which is an immovable component that impedes motion of the gate.

If a gate is determined to be an immediate threat to safety, any use of the gate must immediately stop until necessary repairs are made by a licensed contractor within a prescribed period.

“The AFA is proud to support Alex’s Law to help improve gate safety,” says Michael Reed, executive director of the AFA. “Our organization has worked closely with the Quanbeck family on industry initiatives that increase awareness, educate communities, and raise standards to eliminate gaterelated injuries and deaths. By working together, community leaders, code enforcement officials, and industry professionals can improve gate design, installation, and maintenance of gates so that no more parents must suffer the death of a child. We applaud the work by Assemblymember Connolly and strongly urge passage of this important legislation.”

Updates will be provided on this legislation as they become available.

Surveys Reveal top design flaws Negating Safety of Swing Gate

Gate Safe, a leading non-profit organization in the UK focused on raising awareness for improved standards in automated gate safety, reports recent research findings that highlight the most found errors responsible for creating an intrinsically unsafe swing gate.

Of the 49 swing gates that were reviewed:

• 92% of them had reduced or unprotected gaps at the gate supports

• Almost 80% failed to display the adequate number of hinges

• 75% had photocells that had been incorrectly programmed, which inhibited the initial opening of the gate

• 57% had photocells applied to one side of the gate or photocells fitted incorrectly in terms of not being close enough to the gate or the area requiring protection

• 55% did not have horizontal edges on the outside of the gate

• 51% had incorrectly programmed edges

“What is particularly alarming about these findings is they represent a small sample of the gate landscape in the UK,” says Richard Jackson, founder of Gate Safe. “If these trends are replicated across the country, most gates that are in use are unsafe as a result of poor design. Given that these surveys are undertaken on gates where the owners are predisposed to adopting best practices and have actively sought out a professional, independent, and unbiased assessment of the gate, the reality of what other less scrupulous property and business owners are accepting as ‘good enough’ is extremely concerning. Sadly, it is more than likely that another serious accident is just waiting to happen.”

A to Z Quality Fencing Joins gate safety initiative

As schools and municipalities strive to create safer environments for their students, employees, and communities, addressing all potential safety hazards is imperative. While many focus on securing doors and adding surveillance cameras, one area often overlooked is the safety of large fence gates.

A to Z Quality Fencing has committed to providing gate safety information to their communities in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and they invite other fence companies around the country to join them.

“We attended the Gate Safety Summit held recently by the Tony Thornton Fence Business Conference in Oklahoma,” explains Aaron Smith, owner, A to Z Quality Fencing. “The summit highlighted numerous hazards posed by large gates, which have resulted in severe injuries and even fatalities among children. Our plan involves comprehensive education for the communities we serve, our consumers, and our installers, emphasizing the importance of safety standards.”

Gates serve as a barrier between public areas and school or municipal property, but without proper precautions in place, they can pose serious risks. Gate safety is crucial in maintaining a secure environment, from accidental death to unauthorized entry.

A to Z Quality Fencing offers free consultations to schools, churches, and other institutions with large gates as part of the initiative. A thorough

inspection for potential hazards will be conducted and they’ll provide recommendations to mitigate or eliminate risks.

A free gate safety evaluation from a professional fence company, gate manufacturer or supplier, has numerous benefits, including:

• It ensures that your gates are up to code and functioning safely.

• It demonstrates a proactive approach towards preventing accidents and liability issues by identifying potential issues before they become major problems.

• Professional companies have in-depth knowledge of regulations and industry standards, allowing them to identify potential hazards and take necessary measures to mitigate them.

• You can trust any necessary repairs or replacements can be promptly addressed to avoid any lapse in safety measures, giving peace of mind and avoiding potential legal repercussions.

“Regardless of the type of gate, we recommend inspection by a professional fence company with expertise in gate safety,” says Smith. “By regularly inspecting and addressing any necessary repairs, we can prevent any potential hazards from arising.”

Miller Edge Launches Improved diy gate Edge sensor

Miller Edge recently launched a new end plug assembly for their CPT210 field assembled edge sensor. This improvement features rugged gold-plated pins that enhance performance by ensuring a secure electrical connection with the conductive sensor. Additionally, an end cap secures the connection, guarding against water or debris infiltration, and it attaches with a screw, eliminating the need for adhesives.

Miller Edge introduced conductive polymer technology nearly 25 years ago. “This end cap improvement simplifies assembly for those DIY contractors who choose to build their own gate edge sensors,” explains Kevin Ward, senior technical product manager at Miller Edge.

Designed with a sleek and narrow profile, CPT210 applications include automated gate pinch point protection at the slide gate draw in post, barrier gate arms and swing gates. Versatile end plug electrical configurations allow for non-monitored or a various monitored option including 8.2k, 10k and diode capacitor. Monitored options are dependent upon gate operator brand and required safety input values.

The CPT210 product continues to be available in 50 ft. bulk extrusion rolls and 5 ft. individual edge assembly kits. Both conductive polymer extrusion options are now shipping with the new end plug design.

Miller Edge has locations in Pennsylvania and Arizona and is a proud American manufacturer.

CONTINUING THE LEGACY OF GOOD BUSINESS VALUES IS KEY TO SUCCESS

The family environment at Lumberman’s Wholesale, Inc. (LWI) permeates the business from co-workers to clients. Developing relationships with clients to best serve them is a key to their success. Founder and past president Ron Esposito embodied this way of doing business and it’s carried through under his son, Jeff’s, current leadership.

Ron founded LWI in 1980 as a two-step distributor of building materials and paint supplies to lumber dealers in Chicago and the surrounding counties. “I was asked by a distributor that I was calling on about opening another branch in the Chicago area,” he says. “After working for the company for six years and having a different way to do business in my mind, I decided it was time to go out on my own.”

The two-step distribution business was quite different back in the early 80’s. “We were route salespeople, calling on most of our customers every two weeks. Most of the products that we sold then were commodity products that you just do not find in an independent dealer today. Today, we probably have two or three of the lines that we sold in the 1980’s,” Ron says. “We prided ourselves on service and helping our customers service their customers even better. I remember one of our dealers telling me that we might not always have the lowest price, but he could depend on us and that was more important to him when he was serving his customers.”

Ron learned about the value of business relationships prior to LWI, when he worked for Reserve Supply in the Chicago area. “Meeting many factory reps, I had an opportunity to work with seasoned veterans. Not having any of the tools that we have today, these men sold from a sample and literature,” Ron explains. “It was from these salesmen that I learned so much. They taught me the importance of knowing all the

people in a lumberyard, not just the manager or purchasing agent. I could walk through any of the lumberyards I called on and even if they bought a little or a lot from me, they knew who I was as I had always spoken to all of them. The computer is a great tool today, but it lacks so many people skills. These are important for success in business.”

Ron’s son, Jeff, began working in the warehouse packing drywall screws at about 10 years of age, and eventually, doing everything in the business. Jeff says, “I always had a love for construction. As a boy, my dad would give me rides on the forklift. It was exciting for me to be in the warehouse and see all the products. So many of the people my dad dealt with were just great people: the employees, vendors, and customers. This industry is built on great people.”

Jeff and his brother were expected to work fulltime schedules as soon as they were out of class for Christmas break, spring break and summer break. “Working legitimate 40-hour weeks from before I could even drive a car formed my work ethic, something I benefit from more than 25 years later,” Jeff says. “Over time, I worked in every part of the business.”

Ron saw that Jeff had the passion to run the business and continue improving it. After Jeff graduated from Purdue University with a small business management degree in 2002, he joined his dad in business. In 2011, he was named president. In time, product focus shifted to specialty building products. Rebranding as LWI Supply, Jeff continues to grow the company on the values on which Ron built the company: relationships, quality, knowledge, and integrity.

“My vision is to continue our core values that my dad established,” Jeff says. “We truly embody them as an organization, and as the industry continues to consolidate, there are things larger organizations just don’t prioritize. Those are what

we believe will drive our company for years to come. As we continue to add more locations, we talk regularly about our core values. You can be the largest company in the world, have billions in backing, technology, etc., but all that means nothing without a great team who wants to have a positive impact to our customers and suppliers. Not only do we believe these core values are our competitive edge, but it also makes work fun!”

In 2023, LWI opened a second location in the St. Louis metro area, and extended their primary trade territory into Southern Illinois, Northwest Kentucky, and Eastern Missouri. This, coupled with distribution to dealers in 20 states outside of Illinois, expanded their footprint even more.

Ron says watching Jeff grow in the job was meaningful. “It was a good ride for me, knowing I had a son who not only wanted the business but has taken it to the next level. Watching him grow in the job has given me and his mother much pride,” Ron explains. “Today, I enjoy talking about business as a father-and-son relationship. When he took over, I told him I would never micromanage him and the decisions he makes. It’s nice to have him call and ask me questions about the business.”

Jeff says his dad’s approach to business was the best foundation. “He led by example, and I continue his approach today. Do the right thing, always, because often it’s easy not to; always be honest, with customers, vendors, and the bank! Take care of people and care about your character and what you do. When you care about your character, your people, your business associates and business interactions, success finds a way to happen,” explains Jeff. “I was blessed and fortunate to have the opportunity to carry on the family business, and there’s nothing that makes me feel more successful than seeing our team embody the legacy my dad started in 1980.”

Standard Practice for Construction of Chain Link Tennis Court Fence per ASTM F969-11

Tennis is a sport beloved by millions worldwide, known for its grace, precision, and intense athleticism. Whether it's a casual game between friends or a professional tournament, the quality of the court and its surrounding infrastructure plays a crucial role in ensuring a fair and safe playing environment. One essential element of a tennis court's infrastructure is the fencing surrounding it, which provides boundaries, security, and spectator safety. To ensure the highest standards of construction and performance, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has developed guidelines for the construction of tennis court fences, outlined in ASTM F969-11.

ASTM F969-11 provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for the construction of chain link tennis court fences, covering various aspects such as materials, dimensions, installation methods, classifications, and testing procedures. By adhering to these standards, construction professionals and tennis court operators can ensure the durability, safety, and overall quality of the fence.

One of the critical aspects of constructing a chain link tennis court fence is the selection of materials. ASTM F969-11 specifies the types of materials that should be used, ensuring they meet certain criteria for strength, corrosion resistance, and longevity. This includes the mesh fabric, framework, fittings, and accessories such as gates and tensioning devices.

The standard also provides guidelines for the dimensions and installation of the fence. This includes specifications for the height and width of the fence, as well as the spacing of posts and support structures. Proper installation techniques are essential to ensure the fence remains stable and secure over time, providing reliable protection for players and spectators alike.

Tennis court classifications are important to understand as well- There are 4 different types and each is used in unique and special needs

applications. Type I- Aluminum-coated steel chain link; Type II- Zinc-coated steel chain link; Type IIIZinc-5% Aluminum-mischmetal alloy-coated steel chain link and Type IV- Polymer-coated steel chain link. Depending on the need and specifications, fence company estimators should understand these.

In addition to outlining construction and classification guidelines, ASTM F969-11 includes testing procedures to assess the performance of the fence. These tests may include measurements of tensile strength, coating thickness, and corrosion resistance, among others. By subjecting the fence to rigorous testing, construction professionals can verify that it meets the necessary standards for quality and safety.

Adhering to ASTM F969-11 offers numerous benefits for tennis court operators, construction professionals, and players alike. By following standardized construction practices, operators can ensure that their courts are safe, durable, and compliant with industry regulations. Additionally, complying with these standards can enhance the overall playing experience, providing players with confidence in the quality of the facilities.

As fence professionals we should understand, ASTM F969-11 plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality and safety of chain link tennis court fences. By providing guidelines for materials, dimensions, installation, classifications and testing procedures, the standard helps construction professionals and operators uphold the highest standards of excellence. By adhering to these guidelines, tennis court operators can create a safe and enjoyable environment for players and spectators alike, enhancing the overall experience of the game.
