Louisiana Fire Marshals Participate in AFA Gate Systems Inspection Training

The office personnel of the Louisiana State Fire Marshals recently sat in on a presentation of the main aspects of automated vehicular gate systems inspection. Since Louisiana is one of the few states that requires licensing of all automated vehicular gate system installers and code compliance of all automated vehicular gate system installs, the Fire Marshal’s office requested guidance from the AFA on what is included with the code requirements.

Nick Rike, the director of professional development and education for the AFA, went to Baton Rouge and presented the basic requirements of UL325 and ASTM F2200. Rike also pointed out how simple it was to do an inspection. The fire marshals had plenty of questions regarding some of the UL 325 requirements for compliance.

Afterwards, the group was taken outside to view the Training Trailer that was built and donated by the Gulf South Chapter for this type of training. This trailer is set up with several gates that show the dangers of gates and the proper ways to alleviate most of those dangers through screening, picket spacing on ornamental metal gates, covers for wheels and safety devices that are needed to provide for safe automated gates.

The leaders of the Fire Marshal personnel commented on how impressed they were with the presentation and the knowledge that was gained. There are plans for the AFA to make this presentation to all the inspectors throughout Louisiana and the hope is that the gate installs of the future will be even more safe.
