A far cry from the diamonds of old, these beautiful facilities are surrounded by chain link fence. Upscale Suburban Community Transforms with Realistic Woodgrain Texture Vinyl Privacy Fence
Philadelphia homeowners association selects Bufftech® vinyl privacy fence for durability and expansive color options
The 138 Montrose condominiums located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, recently underwent a dramatic exterior update with the help of Everlasting Fence Company of Glenside, Pennsylvania, and CertainTeed Bufftech® vinyl privacy fence. The quiet, wooded 64-unit community – laid out in three circles across eight acres – was built in 1986 and is maintained by the Montrose Homeowners Association (HOA), whose property manager helped facilitate the group’s decision to replace the complex’s wooden fences and gates. Bufftech was selected because of its high-quality material and wide variety of style and color options to maximize curb appeal and seamlessly complement each home’s exterior, while also blending in with the lush, natural landscape.
“We wanted a fence that would match the aesthetic the complex already had, and we were impressed by CertainTeed’s broad list of colors to choose from,” says Pat McPherson, president of the Montrose HOA. “We had already replaced our wood fences twice, so this time we decided
to consider options besides wood. After looking around, we knew vinyl was the way to go.”
With extensive research for long-lasting fence products that would highlight the area’s natural beauty and require little upkeep, the property manager, HOA and homeowners ultimately chose Bufftech Imperial with CertaGrain® Texture and Bufftech Chesterfield with CertaGrain® Texture in Weathered Blend. CertainTeed recommended the renovation be handled by Everlasting Fence Company, a credentialed, CertainTeed 5-Star Fence Contractor. After a thorough bidding and vetting process that included multiple contractors, the HOA selected Everlasting Fence Company for its experience, price and quality.
“The HOA board was very engaged and wanted to ensure they chose not only the right materials, but the perfect company to install it. CertainTeed representatives joined us at multiple meetings with the board and with community members to answer questions about the product and about our company,” says Erik Egelkamp, general manager of Everlasting Fence Company. “The
board and community members are devoted to their homes and were seeking the best value for their dollar. Each person I met was really engaged and committed, which gave us the chance to explain our training processes and how talented and hardworking our installation teams are. It was also a great opportunity to showcase our commitment to each customer and the steps we take to choose products that benefit the unique needs of each property.”
In total, Everlasting Fence Company renovated the front entries of all 64 units, the back patios of 50 units and the community’s shared pool area in two phases lasting a total of five months. The three-person installation team – with up to six people on site when necessary – used 3,000 feet of five-foot Imperial with CertaGrain® Texture fence with 83 gates and 208 feet of six-foot Chesterfield with CertaGrain Texture fence.
Both phases began with the removal of the existing wooden fences, which had begun rotting, and all the gates, which were either sagging or torn off due to age. Once the team had set up Continued

string lines to visualize the fence line layout, they marked post locations and dug 36-inch holes for the posts. Finally, they set the posts in their concrete footers and assembled the panels before finishing with hanging gates and installing post caps.
It was especially important to the team not to disturb residents or interfere with their daily lives, so everyone from the fence company took special care to work quickly, cleanly and quietly – especially during the layout phase when they were setting string lines and digging holes to set the posts, both of which can be a tripping hazard if not handled correctly.
“Bufftech is a brand we install frequently,” says Egelkamp. “CertainTeed is known for its quality and holds itself to a standard higher than other manufacturers in the market. It doesn’t skimp on thickness or quality of raw materials, which is why it has guarantees that no other company can touch. CertainTeed also guarantees
its dark colors, which is unheard of in this industry, due to the high fade potential that is inherent with other dark PVC fences. It even covers labor on product warranties for the first five years. This is the most superior PVC fence product on the market, across the globe.”
Imperial with CertaGrain Texture Fence is molded from real wood, giving an authentic woodgrain texture, and provides homeowners with a satisfying balance between privacy and airflow. Chesterfield with CertaGrain Texture is a full privacy fence, also with a realistic woodgrain finish and tongue-and-groove picket design. Both are available in four realistic wood blend colors.
Imperial and Chesterfield’s complementary vinyl composition ensure many years of low-maintenance beauty, eliminating the need for staining or painting. As with all Bufftech fences, both are backed by ColorLast® dark color fade protection and a lifetime limited warranty with SureStart™ parts and labor protection. As noted earlier, it was these rare product guarantees that solidified the board’s final decision.
“I think the product was paramount to this project,” says Egelkamp. “The HOA’s goal was multi-faceted: They wanted to have a fence that blended into the landscape and feel of the property, that would hold up for decades to come and that would keep a clean look. Entering the community now, to see the new fence, landscape and retaining walls, gives off a very welcoming and warm feel.”
The addition of Chesterfield solid privacy panels and gates – also in the Weathered Blend color –seamlessly complemented the Imperial slatted fence to give the community a cohesive look, and it offered homeowners the extra seclusion and security they desired in necessary areas.
“The finished project looks terrific,” says McPherson. “The difference between the new, woodgraintextured vinyl material and the old rotting wood fence is like night and day, and the homeowners are very pleased because the job was done professionally and with care. We highly recommend working with CertainTeed for the quality of their materials and exceptional customer service. And we can’t say enough about the Everlasting Fence Company crew, who paid such close attention to the details of our project. We are so pleased!”

by Lifestory Research. This is the third consecutive year Trex® has earned the #1 ranking in the organization’s annual brand trust study.
“We are thrilled to have been recognized once again as the most trusted decking brand,” says Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing and ESG development for Trex Company. “Brand trust is among the most important factors people consider when shopping for outdoor products for their homes and is something we work every day to earn and retain.”
The America’s Most Trusted® Study is a large-scale survey of consumers across the United States that seeks to identify the brands people trust most within a variety of industries and categories. The annual study examines more than 50 classes of home products and is considered a leading source of brand insights for builders, product manufacturers and service providers seeking to better understand consumer perceptions and preferences.
The results of the 2023 America’s Most Trusted Outdoor Decking ranking are based on the opinions of more than 7,800 Americans surveyed between January and December 2022. With a Net Trust Quotient Score of 113.0, Trex
earned the highest trust rating among nine decking brands included in the survey, solidifying its position as America’s Most Trusted Decking brand for the third consecutive year. Trex received the best reviews and satisfaction scores among survey respondents and was the only decking brand to earn the maximum five-star rating.
“The Lifestory Research study is especially meaningful because it focuses exclusively on trust and reflects the opinions and values of real consumers, most importantly consumers who are actively in the market for decking and outdoor living products,” notes Adkins. “For more than 30 years, Trex has worked hard to build a legacy of trust with our customers by consistently delivering on our brand promise of premium aesthetics and durability, continuous innovation and an unwavering commitment to sustainability. Recognition like this confirms that these efforts are resonating.”

Lumberock Decking Goes Beyond Composite for Sustainability
Post-Covid America has seen an explosion of activity in our outdoor living spaces. Exercising, socializing, gardening, relaxing, and even cooking has moved from the indoor out, which has led to explosive growth in outdoor improvement projects. Since 2020, 90% of individuals have stated that their outdoor living space is more important than ever, with over 78% making updates to their outdoor living space during the pandemic, according to the IFCA Trend Report. This uptick has paralleled the trend for finding more sustainable, eco-friendly materials to integrate into our living spaces. Lumberock’s ‘Beyond Composite’ decking marries the demand for integrating modern, stylish design elements with sustainable materials that are guaranteed for life.
Lumberock Premium Decking® uses innovative extrusion technology to combine a mineral-fill compound with high-density polyethylene plastic. This formula allows for a manufactured solid, nonporous dimensional profile that is exceptionally durable and will not rot, crack, splinter, or peel. Manufactured from recycled plastic material, their ‘Beyond Composite’ boards are protected by a guarantee that protects against rotting, cracking, splintering, or peeling. Unlike traditional wood
decking, composite decking maintains the same quality and structural integrity for life. That means- no additional plastic waste and less tree harvesting to replace rotting or cracking wood planks.
Experts agree that composite decking is the number one choice for environmentally conscious consumers because of the eco-friendly manufacturing process, low maintenance, and long lifespan. “People don’t always think about the complexity of traditional decking. Not only is it part of deforestation, but it also requires harmful chemical usage for staining, sealing, waterproofing, and treating the lumber,” explains Chris Sanders, Director of Sales for Lumberock and its sister brand BearBoard Commercial Plastic Lumber. “Not only is Lumberock removing plastic waste from the environment, but we are repurposing it for a product that doesn’t require further modification. It is truly a beautifully designed, sustainable product.”
Experts widely consider composite decking made from recycled materials the most environmentally friendly option for upgrading your outdoor space with minimal environmental impact. Decking comprised of recycled materials keeps hard-to-decompose products such as plastic grocery bags and single-use plastics out of our landfills. Because of its durability, composite decking removes the need for regular maintenance and should infrequently require board replacement or reconstruction. That means that because an average wood decking will
typically need to be replaced within ten years, installing composite decking saves you money and many lifespans of wood plant replacements.
Once a deck project is built with one or more of Lumberock’s 12 distinct Premium Decking colors, consider integrating additional eco-friendly elements into the outdoor living space for your client. Lighten up the entertainment area with solar-powered lighting and furnish the outdoor area with recycled or composite wood chairs. Fill the space with natural décor by integrating living plants into the structure, including fruit and vegetable plants.
Regardless of a project’s design challenges, premium composite decking, such as Lumberock, can help meet a homeowner’s desires for a versatile, stylish outdoor living space with minimal environmental impact.

The Evolution of Composite Decking
Where It All Began
In 1988, a chemist who possessed an innate curiosity about ways to recycle used materials into new products, was the first to combine sawdust with plastic bags to create a material that looked like wood but lasted much longer. This led the earliest innovators of wood plastic composite decking — Trex® and AERT, Inc. (now MoistureShield®) — to manufacture the first composite decking products, giving rise to a new decking option that touted lower maintenance and increased durability over traditional pressuretreated wood.
Not to be confused with PVC or vinyl decking, which is made from 100% plastic, composite decking is a blend of recycled wood and plastic that is combined and blended into a compound and then further compressed and compacted before being extruded into solid boards. A sustainable and eco-friendly product from its inception, composite decking is made from a high percentage of materials that would otherwise end up in landfills.
While early composite decking products stirred interest among homeowners, the initial excitement quickly waned as the new material presented several challenges including a tendency to stain, fade, warp and crack. And limited colors and nonexistent grain patterns only accentuated the fake plastic aesthetic of the boards. This caused many homeowners to feel the new decking option was not worth its expensive price tag.
Composite Decking Today
After a challenging start, manufacturers invested substantial time, research and testing to bring composite decking to where it is today — with capped composite boards now the industry standard. The plastic cap that covers composite boards helps to keep it from breaking down over time — maintaining the integrity of the board to prevent warping, cracking, staining and helping to seal out moisture to prevent rot and decay.
Some manufacturers even figured out a way to take capped composite decking to a whole other level — creating a product that can be used underwater as well as above ground. MoistureShield® composite deck boards feature a proprietary Solid Core — an impermeable barrier doesn’t just provide an outer cap; it encapsulates each wood fiber to deliver protection from the inside out on all four sides. Meaning MoistureShield products can be installed on the ground, in the ground or underwater without any structural performance issues.
“Because of our Solid Core, our composite boards absorb virtually no moisture and can be used in places that were once challenging to maintain for extended periods, like docks that sit on the water or lead directly into the water, or decks that sit directly on the ground,” says Matthew Bruce, vice president of sales at MoistureShield. “We are proud of our innovation which has resulted in our products standing up to the elements for more than 30 years with no
structural field failures.”
In addition, composite decking now features a wide range of enhanced ingenuities that allow for greater pricing flexibility along with varying degrees of stain- and scratch-resistance, heat absorption, slip-resistance and general aesthetic distinctions. Available in a myriad of natural wood tone colors with a wide selection of texturization and grain variegations, today’s composite decking is nearly indistinguishable from real wood.
Outdoor Living Trends Lead to Increased Decking Demand
With the trend over the past few years to create larger, non-traditional outdoor spaces — like outdoor offices, kitchens and grander entertaining areas — the demand for decking products has skyrocketed.
With the increased demand for low maintenance and durable composite decking, contractors are noticing that homeowners are more willing to invest in higher quality products when it comes to their outdoor living spaces.
“We’ve been seeing a ‘do it once and do it right mentality’ emerging,” says John Lea, owner and founder of Decksouth in Atlanta, Georgia. “People are taking the time and making the investment to build something that will last for years to come.”
20 APRIL 2023 | FENCE NEWS USA
Composite decking has made great advances since first being introduced to the market more than three decades ago. Learn where it all began and just how far it has come.
Now limited only by one’s imagination, composite decking and deck designs have come a long way since debuting more than 30 years ago. A sprawling, multi-level waterfront composite deck using MoistureShield® Vision® in Cathedral Stone shows one striking possibility.
The capping on composite deck boards helps to seal out moisture, preventing rot and decay. MoistureShield® VantageTM composite decking — shown here in Bridle — features a cap that offers protection on all four sides of its boards.
This has pushed manufacturers to not only develop technologies that take composite decking to a higher performance level, but also to expand color and wood grain variegation options that more accurately represent true wood tones. This aligns with a rise in biophilic design — a trend being seen in both the building industry and exterior/landscape design that works to incorporate more natural elements to increase a person’s connection to their natural surroundings.
With the multitude of products available on the market today, homeowners can get more creative with their decking projects — in some cases, turning deck projects into an art form. “We’ve noticed an increase in the number of requests for two-tone deck designs that create a distinctive, strong visual interest,” says Lea. Two-tone designs often use darker accent boards to picture frame the perimeter of a lighter-colored deck, as breaker boards to divide sections of a large deck or to frame out stair treads on a grand staircase.
New Installation Alternatives
While typical deck construction uses in-ground support posts and elevated joists, new ways to build a deck are starting to appear on the market. For example, the InstaDeck® Outdoor Flooring System by DuraLife® Decking features a locking tile foundation and an integrated Step-Clip® fastening system. This system allows for a freestanding, ground-level composite deck to be assembled on any flat surface in minimal time with few tools. InstaDeck is one solution that is good for both a DIYer and for a contractor who may want to easily add a lower-level deck onto a larger project.
The demand for larger, grander outdoor living spaces has increased substantially resulting in decks being used to create distinct outdoor areas for entertaining, cooking, relaxing and even working. A multi-use deck using DuraLife® Decking Hardwoods CollectionTM is shown here in Golden Teak.

Three Steps for Creating an Outdoor Living Space with LMT Mercer Groups Low Voltage Lighting and Solar Lighting
More and more homeowners request an outdoor living space they can enjoy all year round. A key element of successfully creating this type of space is lighting. Roby Grenier, with LMT Mercer Group, says adding low voltage lighting and solar lighting to this space is a great way to create ambiance and light up the space without using a lot of electricity. Solar lighting is also a great option because it is environmentally friendly and can save homeowners money on their electric bill.
Grenier highlights the steps to take to enhance an outdoor living space and put the finishing touches on a landscape, deck or fence installation with LMT’s low voltage lighting and solar lighting.
1: Planning
When planning an outdoor living space, the first step should be to decide what kind of atmosphere and design is desired. Consider the existing landscaping, deck space and furniture, as well as any features the client would like to add, such as a bar, fence, deck, railing, fire pit, hot tub, outdoor kitchen or patio area. In addition to planning the design of the space, it’s important to consider the type of lighting you want to use. Low voltage lighting will give the space a more subtle, warm glow and allow the homeowner to control the amount of light in their space using LMT’s Direct Current Low Voltage Power Supply. Solar lighting is a great choice for illuminating large fence projects and accents for mailbox posts, gate latches or areas that don’t have electricity available. Both options are excellent for creating atmosphere and adding security to any outdoor living space. LMT offers a variety of styles, color options and sizes of post caps, accessory lights and bistro lights in low voltage as well as option on Warm (3000 Kelvin) or Bright White (5000 Kelvin) and solar options in multiple styles colors and sizes in 5000 Kelvin. Both are available for PVC, aluminum, and composite projects.
2: Installing Low Voltage Lighting
The first step is to purchase the power supply, low voltage post cap lights and accessories needed. It is important to check local electric codes to ensure that low voltage lighting is approved in your area. The LMT DC power supply, which is used to convert regular household electrical current, alternating current (AC), into the low voltage direct current (DC) power for the lights. LMT’s Low Voltage is a plug-and-play system that is ETL certified and simple to install. Once the power supply is installed, connect the harnesses and splitters together and install the low voltage post cap and accessory lights. It is best to map out your project space and decide on the best places to install the lights, such as along deck, railing, stairs, or fencing. Remember to include an appropriate number of lengths of LMT’s plug-and-play harnesses and splitters for the size of the project.
3:
Adding solar lighting to your outdoor living space
Solar lighting is an excellent way to illuminate property lines and landscape features, as well as fencing and gates. It can conserve energy and provide an option in spaces where electricity is not available. Solar lighting is also very attractive, and easy to install and maintain. There are a variety of styles and designs to choose from. Place these lights in areas that will get plenty of sunlight and make sure the solar panels have direct access to the sun. The solar lights will store the energy from the sun during the day and come on automatically when it gets dark.
“Creating an outdoor living space with low voltage and solar lighting is a relatively simple way for a contractor to score a big win with their clients, as well as showcase their work on fencing, decking and railing installations,” says Grenier. “With a little bit of planning and imagination, you can create an outdoor living space that will be enjoyed for years to come.”

Pergolas and Arbors: Outdoor Beauty Standards that Withstood the Test of Time
Outdoor trends often come and go. Pergola and arbors, however, have been around for centuries, dating back to 1400 B.C. Unsurprisingly, they are still popular to this day.
When Shoreline Vinyl Systems (SVS) in Denton, Maryland opened in 2003, they sought out to bring pergola’s worldwide popularity to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Now, 20 years later, you can find their pergola and arbors up and down the East Coast.
The style and material may have changed over the course of a few millennia, but the purpose of them stays the same.
A pergola’s main objective is to provide shade to the user. They protect homes from 24-hour direct sun while still allowing some light into the space. This helps prevent homes and furniture from fading quickly, which is a major plus for most homeowners. Every customer is different and has their own preference on lighting. Luckily, desired sunlight can be manipulated by adding more or less balusters

The DTNA MS600 Swing Style Picket Pointer is a simple machine to set up and operate for cutting pickets. It is a similar design as the obsolete MAR-SAL picket pointer. Boards and cants up to a total of 6” width can be pointed. Various point styles can be achieved with the MS600 such as french gothic, gothic, stockade and round dog ear. Two air clamps hold the boards securely in place during the cutting process.

and stringers to the top of the Pergola system. The grid-like top also provides the perfect habitat for vines or other foliage, not only adding beauty but also additional shade. Another unique quality is that SVS pergolas can be built as free-standing or attached to a structure like a deck or railing system.
Arbors turn an entryway into a grand entrance. They can be used attached to a fence gate for a walkthrough or on their own as decor. Similarly, to pergolas, they provide shade and make great homes for healthy vines and flowers.
They both bring added monetary value to a property, and they add a unique definition and character into the yard without jeopardizing precious square footage.
“Pergolas and arbors are a perfect addition to an outdoor living and coordinate well with Shoreline’s fencing and railing product to provide a cohesive aesthetic,” says Anthony Casey, SVS Account Manager.
SVS offers low maintenance and easy-to-construct PVC pergola and arbors that provide the everlasting qualities homeowners desire. All SVS pergolas are entirely customizable and made for each customer’s distinctive application. SVS arbors come in kits that make their construction a breeze.

That’s why more and more contractors and consumers now recognize the beautiful potential of an aluminum railing system with clean, crisp lines to accentuate a deck or patio.”
Swedgelock offers a complete line of residential and commercial railings in a multitude of styles including vertical picket, cable, horizontal picket, mesh, and glass. The Key to the Perfect Deck: A Quick Guide to Deck Footings
Nothing says summer like a backyard barbeque on a new deck. When built correctly, a deck can be a hot spot for backyard escapes and a refuge for enjoying perfect summer evenings, but according to Joe Haynes, Little Beaver president, it can all come crashing down if the deck doesn’t have proper footings.
“Footings support the deck’s weight at different points in the ground, creating a crucial support network that prevents sagging and wood rot,” says Haynes. “Those problems not only make the deck unattractive, but unsafe as well. Without proper footings, the deck will sink into the ground, taking with it any future summer get-togethers.”
Haynes offers some guidelines to ensure this doesn’t happen with your deck project:
Laying the Groundwork
When starting a new deck project, choosing the correct footings boils down to two things: loads and codes. The first step is to determine the deck’s size, location and layout. After getting a general idea of what the deck will look like, think about how it will be used. Will it be the next venue for the neighborhood block party? Or will it be for intimate gatherings of family and friends? Based on the answer, the deck will have different footing requirements to support the weight.
Local building codes also determine the footing style and measurements. Building codes can vary from state to state, so it’s crucial to contact local government experts. They can provide information regarding the minimum number of footings needed, spacing requirements and even how deep to dig. For instance, holes need to be dug below the frost line, which can range anywhere between 12-60 inches, depending on where the project is located.
The Digging Commences
After securing the necessary building permits from city hall and locating underground utility lines, it’s time to dig. When it comes to bringing heavy duty equipment through a yard, some machines can leave ruts in soft, green grass, and fences and narrow side yards limit what type of equipment can even reach the worksite — commonly forcing contractors to seek out hand augers and mechanical drills.
Mechanical earth drills are highly maneuverable and can get to the worksite and also save time when digging deck footings. These earth augers can cut through different soil types, dig clean, consistent holes and quickly set up the beginnings for the perfect deck. Earth drills are compact

digging deck footings.
and offer multiple types of digging teeth depending on the soil type.
Additionally, mechanical drills are more portable than heavy machinery. For instance, some drills feature pneumatic wheels so a single person can pull the drill and carriage to the footing location without forming lawn ruts or dismantling fences. Some manufacturers build models with torque tubes that transfer digging torque to the engine carriage, which allows one person to safely operate the drill. Once in place, the user can drill to the required depth and quickly move to the next footing location.
After the footings are placed and the concrete has set, the footings are ready for deck construction. The crew can continue building the frame for the deck that will be the hot spot next summer and for many more to come.
Little Beaver has been proudly manufacturing quality, safe and productive drilling equipment for three generations, offering a full line of easy-to-operate equipment and accessories. Learn more at www.littlebeaver. com.

CAMO® Introduces New Code-Compliant Structural Screws for Decks
Known for delivering innovative tools and fasteners for deck builders, National Nail’s CAMO® brand takes its product innovation to a new level with a new line of high-performance structural screws. Certified IRC/IBC code compliant and rigorously third-party tested and certified by DrJ Engineering, CAMO Structural Screw applications include the deck substructure, internal framing, ledger and general construction.
“The CAMO team is excited to unveil CAMO Structural Screws, the next generation of structural fasteners to help builders with the deck structure and beyond,” says Doug Hutchings, Vice President of Product Development, National Nail. “The new screws offer builders excellent holding power and stronger connections.”
Engineered to start fast without pre-drilling, drive smooth, and hold strong, CAMO’s screw designs create the best structural fastener available. All structural screws feature CAMO’s proprietary PROTECH™ ULTRA 4 coating, a fourlayer system for industry-leading corrosion resistance and tested 2 times longer than industry standards. The Ledger, Multi-ply and Truss screws also do double-duty, requiring fewer fasteners per job and less SKUs for dealers. Unlike most structural screws, all CAMO structural screws can be used for interior and exterior projects.
The CAMO Structural Screw product line includes:
CAMO Truss Screws. CAMO’s new six-inch Truss Screws helps contractors make connections easier, faster, and better. They replace hurricane ties for general interior construction and exterior decking applications. The handsfree Truss Guide included in every pail helps contractors fasten at the right angle every time. Above and beyond most structural screws, the CAMO Truss screw can be used in interior wall and exterior beam-to-joist connections.
CAMO Multi-Ply Screws. CAMO Multi-Ply Screws are available in specific lengths for both sawn and structural composite lumber beams, replacing through-bolts and nails for faster, stronger, more secure connections. Three screws do double-duty as Ledger Screws.
CAMO Ledger Screws. Offered in a variety of lengths, new CAMO Ledger Screws are a faster, less-expensive way to install ledger boards. The screw’s flat head finishes flush with the material, so it doesn’t get in the way of joist hangers or other materials. These screws can also be used in multi-ply applications.
Framing Screws. Framing Screws (2 ½ and 3-inch) are designed with superior holding power for wood-to-wood framing connections, deck blocking and interior/exterior general construction projects.
CAMO’s Multi-Purpose Screws. CAMO MultiPurpose Screws are available in Flat and Hex head and replace lag bolts and through-bolts for framing. In addition to CAMO’s PROTECH ULTRA 4 Coating, they are available in hot-dip galvanized options for coastal applications.

RDI Elevation Rail was selected as the sole recipient in its category from more than 400 entries that were reviewed by a panel of 26 judges ranging from industry experts to media representatives. Exhibitors with products that show the best combination of design, functionality, innovation, and usefulness to consumers and/or home builders are considered across nine categories.
“As a judge, it could not be more exciting to see the new and innovative products brought forth at this year’s show,” said Dan Mitchell, President of Eagle CDI, Inc. and Best of IBS Awards judge.
“This system saves contractors considerable time on installation and makes traditionally challenging DIY projects much easier for homeowners,” said Patrick Ianni, Director of Product Management at Barrette Outdoor Living. “With RDI Elevation Rail we really pushed the envelope to ensure a unique offering in the marketplace.”
With its patent-pending OneTenTM built-in centralized tensioning system, RDI Elevation Rail can install 38% faster than leading competition.*
The built-in centralized tensioning system — a unique mechanism in the industry – eliminates the tedious task of tensioning each cable individually and decreases the number of seasonal adjustments. Its modern, industrial design offers a continuous top rail for both stair and level applications while its adjustable panels enable installation indoors or outdoors without obstructing views. RDI Elevation Rail is available as pre-assembled kits with pre-installed brackets and pre-strung, stainless-steel cables.

seamless design aesthetic between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Fe²⁶ Axis horizontal steel railing is a panelized system that residential building professionals can install quickly. Posts with pre-attached brackets further support a straightforward installation process while guaranteeing consistency and quality along the perimeter of a deck. A durable, low-maintenance building material, steel won’t rot, warp or deteriorate over time. This means that Fe²⁶ Axis can resist the damaging effects of weathering in nearly any type of environment. Further preserving the system’s overall appearance, FortressShield technology provides enhanced corrosion resistance and UV protection. Like Fe²⁶ Traditional steel railing, Fe²⁶ Axis horizontal steel railing is backed by a 15-year limited warranty.
“Given the continued emphasis on creating personalized outdoor living areas, customers are also more carefully considering the finishing touches that make a space feel complete. In the same way that interior trim typically complements hardwood flooring and windows, many are looking for high-design railings that accentuate their home’s exterior,” said Don Douglas, Senior Product Manager – Railing, Fortress Building Products. “A customizable steel railing like Fe²⁶ Axis delivers proven performance to support deck functions, while giving play to today’s in-demand modern aesthetic.”
For design inspiration, customers can scan the QR code at the bottom of the Fe²⁶ Axis horizontal steel railing product page with their mobile device. This will open up Fortress’ augmented reality (AR) visualizer tool, which makes it possible to preview how Fe²⁶ Axis will look on any deck, front porch, patio or balcony. The cutting-edge tool is one of the many ways that Fortress® provides a best-in-class customer service experience.

Global Wooden Decking Market Report Finds Intensification of Remodeling Activities Spurring Growth
ReasearchAndMarkets.com has released the “Global Wooden Decking Market 2022-2028” report.
The report states that the global wooden decking market will advance with a CAGR of 4.82% in the forecasted period from 2022 to 2028.
Factors such as elevated housing and infrastructure demand in advanced economies, along with a rise in affordable housing projects are primarily contributing to the market growth. In addition, intensified remodeling activities have also enhanced the demand for wooden decking.
On the other hand, the growing preference for and usage of alternative wooden decking materials is affecting growth. However, there is an increase in green building construction, which has raised the demand for wooden decks. This is expected to generate growth opportunities for the market.
The global market for wooden decking spans across Europe, Asia-Pacific, North America, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to observe the fastest growth over the forecasted period. Several governments in the region provide tax benefits to encourage investment in wood decking, which is likely to support the market’s growth.
North America is the leading market globally, accounting for the largest share in 2021. Its growth
can be largely accredited to the presence of a large number of market players. In addition, the United States and Canada are witnessing notable growth in construction activities, which is expected to elevate the demand for wood decking in the region.

Simplify Deck Post Installation
Perma-Column® precast deck posts offer a convenient way to simplify the installation process. When used in combination with a foot pad, the precast concrete deck posts eliminate the need for mixing concrete on site.
This allows deck installation to be completed more efficiently and, in less time, increasing the number of decks that can be installed. Installers don’t need to wait for the weather to cooperate or for the concrete to dry.
When used in combination with FootingPad® by AG-CO, it results in a permanent foundation that can bear loads immediately.
They are engineered for speed and performance, with features that include:
• 10,000 PSI precast concrete column
• Three times stronger than standard concrete
• Powder-coated steel bracket welded to rebar
• ICC-ES-certified code-compliance
The deck posts can be shipped directly to the jobsite. For details, visit www.permacolumn.com/build-decks-faster.
Patented Product Offers New Solution for Supply Chain Disruption for Gates
Installers, retailers and wholesalers of aluminum fencing products have likely experienced significant difficulties in obtaining product. During peak season, it can take eight to 10 weeks, in some cases, just to receive an order.
“Supply chain issues can be a recipe for disaster for contractors, suppliers, and ultimately the consumer,” explains Justin Ash with Alumigen. “Contractors and suppliers walk a tightrope, hoping the product arrives in a timely manner because they don’t want to be saddled with product from a customer cancellation that is nonreturnable under the suppliers’ policies. It can get tangled quickly when the supply chain is disrupted.”
The problem often boils down to gates. “Every supplier welds their gates together and then powder coats them after welding. This is a cost prohibitive procedure for the small to medium sized companies,” he says.
His company, Alumigen, has patented a new process using custom profiles and a specifically formulated glue that allows contractors to glue their aluminum gates together with up to 30,000 PSI of strength. “The process involves gluing fully rackable, screwless-looking gates together
from scrap sections of fence for as little as $20 with no truss required,” Ash explains. “Pickets are snapped into the rail using our patented gate clips. The gate clips are frozen to the rail with our specially formulated glue and the entire panel becomes the truss.”
“We’re excited to offer an affordable, innovative solution that will eliminate long lead-times,” he says.

Codelocks Provides All-Weather Locking Solution for the Fence and Gate Market
Purchasing a fence for a property can be a substantial investment. Whether that be to dictate a property line, keep children safe and away from pools, or deter theft of valuable assets that are kept outdoors, it is imperative to choose the best option to suit your customer’s needs.
However, one often overlooked component of a fence installation is the use of a secure gate lock. By installing a lock on the outdoor gate, you can provide an extra layer of security for any commercial or residential project. According to Matt Welty, vice president, Americas with Codelocks, there are a variety of locks available in the market today, and not all of them provide the same benefits.
Codelocks is a leading access control company that designs and distributes innovative, keyless locks and access solutions, offering light-, medium- and heavy-duty locking solutions for the gate and fence market. Gate Solutions by Codelocks is a comprehensive kit that includes all components needed for a gate and fence installation: lock, latch, accompanying lock box and hardware
“First and foremost, when it comes to choosing a lock, it is important to understand what type of lock you are
looking for,” says Welty. “Each lock has different benefits, including options such as the ability for codes to be changed without removal from the door or disassembly, remote code changes, key override, fullsize lever handles and access management that allows multiple codes to be set. Our stainless-steel buttons eliminate problems from button wear associated with user code deciphering.”
The second, and often overlooked element, explains Welty is to have a locking solution that is meant for the outdoors and can withstand harsh environments. “Many locks in the industry may appear to be heavy-duty enough, or they may be marketed as suitable for outdoor applications, but very often, these locks do not go through the necessary testing to ensure durability.”
According to Welty, Marine by Codelocks, a durable black finish that helps prevent damage caused by corrosion, has gone through rigorous moisture and salt spray in a testing chamber for up to 1,000 hours without flaking or button peeling. “This type of coating keeps locks safe in environments that may endure wind, rain and other unfavorable conditions.”
Four ranges of Codelocks locks are available with the marine finish, including the CL200, CL400, CL500 and CL600. These locks range from light- to heavy-duty depending on the needs of the user and whether it is a residential or commercial installation. Each lock is reliable and flexible, with simple-coded external access, these locks are ideal for outbuildings, construction sites, pools, boat marinas and homes by the water.
In addition to the testing Marine by Codelocks has completed, these mechanical locks benefit from a lifetime warranty and renowned technical support available via phone, email or support site. Codelocks recently announced a strategic alliance with D&D Technologies, the recognized leader in safety and high-performance gate hardware. This alliance positions Codelocks to expand its Gate Solutions by Codelocks and Marine by Codelocks to the fence industry.

Simon Lee
Northstar Controls, headquartered in Sarasota, Florida, provides a full line of inductive loop vehicle detectors along with other vehicle detection categories. Working in a global market, President Simon Lee aims to stay a step ahead by focusing on market share growth and increasing volume with an eye on cost containment, while ensuring all products are manufactured in the United States.
WHAT LED TO YOU ESTABLISHING NORTHSTAR CONTROLS IN 2002?
I have worked for several companies in the vehicle detector industry since the late 1970s and having brought vehicle detectors to Eberle Design and established their vehicle detector and manufacturing divisions, it seemed a natural step to start my own company.
Your degree is in electrical and electronic engineering, and you were previously the CEO at Electronic Devices prior to Northstar, so there is a clear love of electronics. What do you enjoy about that field?
Although my degree is in engineering and I am still actively engaged in design and engineering, my interest has always been manufacturing, the logistics and processes involved in making things, maintaining consistent quality and constantly upgrading methods. This is a major reason that Northstar manufacturers all products in-house.
WERE YOU HESITANT TO JUMP INTO THE ENTREPRENEURIAL REALM OR DID IT STARTING NORTHSTAR FEEL LIKE THE NATURAL NEXT STEP?
I think there is always a hesitancy to go out on one’s own but with the experience gained in product design and manufacturing processes, it was the next logical step, and I believe the success of the company confirms this.
WHAT WERE THE FIRST FEW YEARS OF NORTHSTAR LIKE?
We started with key contacts at some distributors which enabled us to make initial sales and that really got the company off the ground.
Manufacturing grew from being essentially based in my house in Phoenix, Arizona to a small facility in nearby Tempe. The increased sales volume that we experienced in the first few years led us to find a larger facility in Sarasota, Florida, a move we completed in 2007.
DESCRIBE THE BUSINESS CLIMATE PERTAINING TO NORTHSTAR. The vehicle detector market is a global one, as a new company starting up in Phoenix, Arizona, Northstar needed to compete for customers across the entire US.
HOW HAS THE COMPANY GROWN OVER THE YEARS?
From humble beginnings, we have always tried to keep the company focused on containing costs. We have grown exponentially in terms of both volume and market share but we remain a small company in terms of number of employees.
Our emphasis on automation allows us to improve our productivity with the employees that we have. We continue to expand our workforce in a measured way which allows us to maintain our quality while giving us the capacity to meet the needs of our expanding market share.

2023 Fence Training School RECAP
For the tenth time, the North American Fence Contractor Association (NAFCA) held its annual Fence Training School in Sebring, Florida February 5 – 8. Students from four different states attended this year. Prior to the school kick-off, NAFCA held its spring board meeting to plan and map out the path for 2023 and the association’s future.
Members present were Ray Statz, Harriet Statz (Qual Line Fence), Dustin Weimann (DW Fence), Mart Prost (Prost Inc), Clint Iams, Bill Iams, Judy Iams, (Log Cabin Fence), Chris Ward-Horner (Hampden Fence), Deb Roche, Don Roche (D Roche Fencing), Shelby Kelland (LiftMaster), Shawn King (Mr Fence Tools), Glenn Butterfield (CertainTeed), Sammy Franklin (Retired), Al Martins, Luis Ruivo (Fence Armor).
A reception kicked off the event at the Inn on the Lakes, adjacent to the Sebring Municipal Golf Course where the classes take place. For the next three days, students and instructors worked at the golf course at the various stations.
One of the benefits of the NAFCA fence training school is all projects are real-world applications of the various fence projects. The students, alongside seasoned veteran installers, install fences that will be used. There are no half measures or temporary fences; all are permanent installs. This provides the best possible learning experience for students.
In addition to the hands-on experiences, various safety discussions were held at mealtime and in the evenings.
Each year, there have been approximately $25,000 worth of material donated and installed by the classes. This results in approximately $250,000 in materials donated to the City of Sebring over the ten years. NAFCA runs the school at cost to keep the registration fee as low as possible. The instructors volunteer their time and services for the betterment of the fence industry. The instructors have a collective cumulative experience in the fence industry of over 450 years and over 220 years of teaching experience.
The 2024 Fence Training School is expected to again be held in Sebring. Watch for details by visiting www.4nafca.com.

Everything is an Opportunity Creating a Culture of Optimism
For several years, the NBC Program “Saturday Night Live” had a recurring character named Debbie Downer who appeared in its comedy skits. The name Debbie Downer eventually became an established slang phrase referring to a pessimistic person who frequently adds bad news and negative feelings to a gathering, thus bringing down the mood of everyone around them.
Is there anyone like that in your company?
Even more to the point – are you that person in your company?
In the fence industry, it is often easy to get caught up in negative thoughts because, after all, this isn’t an easy business. Challenges face every company in our industry every day. No company is immune - not manufacturers, not distributors, not suppliers, and certainly not installers.
If it’s not the little things (like a worker showing late for work, a truck broken down, an appointment canceled, etc.), it’s the big things (material shortages due to delivery problems, cyber-attack on your billing system, jobsite shut down by a labor dispute, etc.).
The easiest thing to do in these situations is find some person or company to blame for what’s going wrong. Or, you can just throw up your hands and claim that the problem is out of your control and there is nothing you can do about it; everyone will have to wait until someone else solves the problem.
The way we handle these little problems sets the tone for how we are going to handle the bigger problems.
We can make 2023 the year that negative situations are turned into opportunities. Here are a few suggestions on ways to keep everyone on your team engaged, optimistic, and productive:
1. Reduce the negative impact of the Debbie Downers in your company.
As we said, it seems as though every company has at least one person who seems to look at every situation as a problem. Sure, the easiest way to deal with that person is to put them on
notice – change your attitude or you are gone. But what if they are a good worker despite of the poor attitude? What if they have been with your company for a long time and people just “tolerate” the behavior (“Oh, you know Debbie. That’s just the way she is.”)?
Rather than letting things go on, or taking a confrontational approach, try making “Debbie” part of the solution. Approach her about specific actions or conversations she could use with others, so her negativity doesn’t spread. Offer her incentives for specific behaviors or actions. Give her some appropriate form of recognition for the things she does well, to get her focused on positive things.
2. Be careful about the messages that are sent to your workforce.
If you want to give your company a culture of optimism, you need to be sure your key leadership team uses effective communications. You’re not going to get every job you bid. In addition to telling your staff that you need to see what went wrong, you could also add that at least you now have some available time to provide extra training sessions, or to make calls on current or potential customers. Look for the positive and communicate that with your staff.
3. Be sure to reward effort as well as output. While most companies are pretty good about recognizing and rewarding employees for meeting goals, try not to wait until a task or a job is completed before giving recognitions. Maybe you can break down some of those tasks into smaller parts, so that recognition is given more frequently. This recognition can be something as simple as giving an employee a long lunch hour or a gift card.
4. Acknowledge the concerns then turn them into opportunities.
Everyone in your firm knows when business is down. They know when inflation is making
everything more expensive. They know when the boss is having a bad day. But they will respond to leaders who are able to communicate empathy for their situation. Saying “I feel your pain” is an expression of empathy, but it only has impact if they believe you feel their pain. One of the ways to get them to believe you is to get them involved in looking at ways to make things better.
There are still a lot of experts (economists, financial institutions, commentators) telling us that a recession, or at least a semi-recession, is still a possibility. There is concern over the downturn in the housing market; the continuing rise in interest rates; the ongoing manpower shortage in many industries, especially construction. The flattening of the fence market in the past couple of quarters may be a sign.
There is no need to panic. We go through these roller-coaster economic times regularly in the fence industry. If 2023 is going to be a good year, we’ll all have to keep our attention and energy focused on the opportunities which are out there. Our job is to look at everything as an opportunity.

Diamond Mowers Showcases Latest Innovations
Diamond Mowers, a leading manufacturer of land clearing and vegetation management attachments, recently showcased their latest additions at the CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 trade show held in Las Vegas during March.
“We are committed to putting our customers first and being the best partner in the industry by engineering the toughest and most reliable solutions for their needs,” says Dan Stachel, executive vice president of Diamond Mowers. “We loved having dealers and contractors interact with our latest innovations at CONEXPO. Engineered for heavy-duty mulching and mowing applications, these game-changing products promise to optimize productivity, diversify work opportunities, and create new revenue streams.”
The new, patent-pending Belt Drive Disc Mulcher made its industry debut. It’s engineered for world-class productivity and suited for contractors and mulching professionals who specialize in land clearing, vegetation and forestry management, and pasture reclamation.
It features increased torque to clear anything in its path without slowing down, recovers twice as fast as other mulchers, and has an efficient design that promotes lower hydraulic temperatures for maximum uptime and carrier life.
It has a 60” cutting width and slices through trees and brush up to 14” in diameter, shreds material up to 6” in diameter and attaches to most skid-steer and compact track loaders. While FourPoint Hardened Steel Teeth come standard, users can swap them for Twin Maul® Carbide Teeth to absorb impact and ensure the right bite for every application.
“Reinforcing our reputation for building firstrate mulchers, this unrivaled attachment is an
eating machine that outclasses anything on the market,” says Stachel. “Because time is money and productivity drives profitability, this machine is designed to work just as hard as its operators.”
Diamond Mowers also spotlighted several new additions to their lineup, including:
Drum Mulcher DC Pro X: designed for largescale mulching and clearing applications. It has a depth control attachment for trees and brush up to 9” in diameter and produces a fine mulch.
land clearing, fire fuel reduction and right-of-way maintenance. It is offered in 30” and 50” cutting widths to accommodate excavator carriers from 4.5 to 10 metric tons.
Brush Cutter Pro X: it excels at thoroughly processing small material, such as thick grass, brush, branches, and trees up to 10” in diameter. Ideal for heavy-duty rural environments, farms, ranches and recreational properties. Available in 60”, 72” and 84” cutting widths it is intended for heavy use and is compatible with standard and high-flow skid-steers.
Drum Mulcher OD Pro X: offers a hybrid design that fuses the best performance features of depth control and open drum mulchers into one attachment. Ideal for contractors requiring power and flexibility for harsh mulching needs, this attachment is made for a wide range of heavy-duty applications from land clearing and vegetation management to utility and roadside maintenance. It is designed to process material up to 9” in diameter.
Excavator Drum Mulcher Pro X: increases the versatility of any midi-excavator while delivering more productivity per pass. Designed to tackle mulching or brush clearing with power and precision, it effectively cuts back and processes unwanted vegetation, making it a great choice for
“These latest innovations are proven to outpace, outpower, and outperform other attachments on the market to make it easier for contractors to deliver increased quality and satisfaction to their clients,” notes Stachel.
Diamond Mowers has been innovating in the land clearing and vegetation management space for over 20 years. The company manufacturers all its products on-site at its facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, enabling it to control every step of the process.

Louisiana Fire Marshals Participate in AFA Gate Systems Inspection Training
The office personnel of the Louisiana State Fire Marshals recently sat in on a presentation of the main aspects of automated vehicular gate systems inspection. Since Louisiana is one of the few states that requires licensing of all automated vehicular gate system installers and code compliance of all automated vehicular gate system installs, the Fire Marshal’s office requested guidance from the AFA on what is included with the code requirements.
Nick Rike, the director of professional development and education for the AFA, went to Baton Rouge and presented the basic requirements of UL325 and ASTM F2200. Rike also pointed out how simple it was to do an inspection. The fire marshals had plenty of questions regarding some of the UL 325 requirements for compliance.
Afterwards, the group was taken outside to view the Training Trailer that was built and donated by the Gulf South Chapter for this type of training. This trailer is set up with several gates that show the dangers of gates and the proper ways to alleviate most of those dangers through screening, picket spacing on ornamental metal gates, covers for wheels and safety devices that are needed to provide for safe automated gates.
The leaders of the Fire Marshal personnel commented on how impressed they were with the presentation and the knowledge that was gained. There are plans for the AFA to make this presentation to all the inspectors throughout Louisiana and the hope is that the gate installs of the future will be even more safe.

This guide has become the fence industry’s most relied-upon tool to assure that chain link fences are constructed and installed to meet all industry standards. It is intended to provide background information in the forms of charts and tables to assist fence designers and installers in the appropriate selection of fencing line posts for chain link fencing. The guide includes 12 tables for the spacing values of line posts exposed to wind speeds of 105 MPH up to and including 210 MPH. These tables are based on the applicable ASCE 7-22 wind load standards.

Gulf South Chapter Completes Project
The Gulf South Chapter of the American Fence Association completed a chapter project at St. Michael the Archangel school. The project was installed around the entrance to the school’s baseball field to help guide spectators to the proper sitting area and to help keep small children from exiting the area and getting into the street near the field.
The chapter wants to thank the crew of guys from HighSteele Fence of Houma, Louisiana who helped with the installation, Garrett St. Germaine of Power Access from Sulphur, Louisiana and Micah Lambert and John DeLatin from Stephens Pipe and Steel. The chapter especially thanks Chis Steele from HighSteele Fence in Pace, Florida for providing the truck and driver who brought the material from Florida on the morning of the installation.
“Everyone hit the ground running. The job was pretty much laid out and ready when the material arrived,” says Mike Gulledge, project coordinator and retiree from P&M Consultants. “Several of us had to leave early for a chapter meeting but the guys from Houma kept at it until dark caught up to them,” Gulledge says. “I have spoken to several people from the school and they are thrilled to finally get this fence installed. Thank you to all who participated.”

APRIL IS STRESS AWARENESS MONTH
It would be difficult to find anyone who didn’t feel the past few years have been uniquely stressful. Stress is part of life and there are no magic buttons to eliminate it, but there are things you can do to stay motivated during stressful times. Taking control of your reaction to stress is the first step toward managing it.
Experts offer the following suggestions to better manage high stress situations:
IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF STRESS. Categorizing the kind of stress you’re experiencing can help you lessen your chance of becoming overwhelmed. The different types of stress are:
Time Stress - when you worry about time or a lack of time. For example, a project deadline is near and you know you can’t complete it in time.
Anticipatory Stress – when you’re stressed about something that’s coming up. For example, watching the weather channel predictions before a major weather event strikes your community.
Situational Stress – when you feel as though you are not in control. For example, having a loved one go through something traumatic.
Encounter Stress – when you have uncomfortable interactions. For example, encountering a reckless driver which causes road rage.
USE YOUR SUPPORT CIRCLE. Whenever you find yourself in very stressful situations, reaching out for any kind of help is beneficial. We’ve all seen how communities come together after a disaster like a tornado, wildfire or hurricane. That kind of support helps to alleviate stress. It’s helpful to reach out to those you trust to help you with whatever it is you may be facing. You never know who might have the answer you’ve been looking for.
TRACK YOUR PROGRESS. It’s common to become focused only on the end goal or outcome when facing major stress. Falling into this type of “all or nothing” thinking can be dangerous because you don’t give yourself any credit for the progress and success you’ve made along the way. This can quickly lead to burnout. By tracking your progress, you can set intermittent goals and celebrate completing each one. You’ll feel the stress leaving your body as you are meet each goal.
SAY NO. This is easier said than done, but it’s important to be honest with yourself. When something else is asked of you, take a moment before responding. If helping is just not feasible, then it’s okay to tell someone no, you can’t help them out at this time. Saying no isn’t selfish, it means you’re honoring yourself and your commitments.
PRACTICE THE BIG THREE. There’s a reason eating healthy, exercising and getting enough sleep always appear on prevention lists. These three habits are the cornerstone to a happy, healthy life and their impact on stress is no different.

UNDERSTANDING HOW BUSINESS CREDIT OPERATES
Most people understand how personal credit works and have a general idea of what their credit score means, but when it comes to launching a small business, entrepreneurs often have limited understanding about how business credit operates. If the business is owned by more than one person, whose credit determines what kind of loans the business will get? What if it’s a sole proprietorship? Does business credit affect personal credit and if so, how? These are common questions that many entrepreneurs have when they’re trying to figure out how to build their business. Ideally the small-business owner would understand how it all works before starting up, but for many, the questions don’t arise until they’re already going down the business-building path. One benefit of understanding the basics of business credit before implementing your business plan is that you can have more realistic expectations of what kind of credit you will receive. It’s also smart to get personal credit in order before launching your business.
Business credit is typically separate from personal credit; there are separate credit cards, checking accounts, and savings accounts. But that doesn’t mean you can neglect or underestimate the importance of your personal credit history when it comes to your business. Personal credit history plays a role in determining what kind of credit lenders will provide, whether you’re a sole proprietor or going into business with partners. In case of the latter, lenders will often want to know the financial history of all co-owners to determine the risk level of lending the business money.
How financial history is calculated depends on how the business is organized. If you structure your business as a sole proprietorship or partnership, your personal credit information is tied in more closely with business credit. Often your personal assets can be used as collateral in case of unpaid business debt. If you structure yourself as an LLC or corporation, you have the benefit of liability protection and you can typically obtain credit under the business’s name, which means lenders don’t necessarily have to check your personal credit history. However, it’s not unusual for lenders to check personal histories of all the owners in the business to provide for initial start-up funds. It’s also wise to keep personal credit intact in case you need to rely on it later to obtain funds to grow or improve your business.
Once your business is registered with business credit bureaus, your business profile will take on its own history much like your personal credit. As with any debt, entrepreneurs should be sure to pay on time and operate their business within reasonable financial means.
