Formulated Materials’ new Integrated™ Railing System is an aluminum railing solution designed to address the coordination failures that have long plagued balcony construction. The system works across both dripthrough and waterproof balcony types and treats the railing as a fully integrated component of the balcony assembly, not a separate scope handed off to another trade.
Balcony problems rarely start in the open field of a deck. They typically show up where assemblies connect, at edges, terminations, and penetrations. Railing attachment is one of the most common failure points, yet it is routinely left to a separate installer with no coordination to the waterproofing scope. The result is punctured membranes, field-applied sealant patches, and callbacks.
The Integrated™ Railing System eliminates these failures by engineering railing attachment as a coordinated waterproofing detail. The system includes a Stanchion Mount configuration designed specifically to preserve waterproofing integrity at concrete-topped balconies. The stanchion is embedded in sealant during waterproofing, so the railing crew never touches the waterproofing scope.
Formulated Materials has developed a suite of components that work alongside the railing system to control water at every common risk area. The T-Bar Termination Pocket is a formed channel that captures and routes water away from the structure. Embed Pans are pre-formed waterproofing receptacles installed before the concrete topping is placed, sealing around railing fastener locations and reducing reliance on field-applied sealants. The Double Drip T-Bar features a dual profile that interrupts water flow before it reaches the visible face of the edge, helping reduce staining over time. Beneath the topping slab, a drainage mat creates a continuous drainage plane that directs water toward the open drip edge rather than allowing it to pool under the concrete.
The Integrated™ Railing System is also fully compatible with Formulated Materials' Elevation Waterproofing System for projects that call for a coordinated waterproofing and railing assembly.
"We're committed to engineering the parts of the balcony assembly that too often get treated as afterthoughts," says Michael Martin, president of Formulated Materials. "The Integrated™ Railing System completes that approach. By making the railing part of the system instead of a separate scope, we've eliminated a category of failures that has plagued multifamily construction for decades."
"A core tenet of our mission at Formulated Materials is simple: balconies that do not leak," says Micah North, vice president of sales at Formulated Materials. "This product is a direct response to consistent feedback from our customers and their customers about the coordination challenges that occur between multiple manufacturers, suppliers, and installers at this critical point in construction. We are a solution-oriented company, and this evolution of our portfolio enables our partners to deliver a more fully integrated system while streamlining a common scope on multifamily projects."

STRENGTH. STYLE.
SOPHISTICATION. Ornamental fencing continues to be one of the industry's rapidly expanding categories, offering the perfect combination of curb appeal, security and lasting performance. As customer expectations evolve, manufacturers continue to introduce products that blend timeless elegance with modern engineering. In this section, we take a closer look at some new products and projects in ornamental fencing.

Property owners weighing fencing options increasingly land on the same answer: ornamental aluminum. Once a niche alternative, it's now mainstream across residential, commercial, and new-construction markets, driven by durability, low upkeep, and long-term value that older materials struggle to match.
Ornamental aluminum fencing is made from extruded metal rails and pickets finished with a powder coating. The result mimics classic wrought iron — clean lines, upright pickets, decorative tops — without the weight or worries about rust. Panels come in modular sections, speeding up installation compared to fence types requiring piece-by-piece assembly on site.
Doug Rende, CEO/president of SHAPES Unlimited Inc., a full-service wholesale distributor of aluminum building products, says the biggest selling point of ornamental aluminum is corrosion resistance. Because aluminum is rust resistant, it holds up well in coastal areas, around pools, and in humid climates where other metals degrade quickly. Maintenance is minimal, with no annual painting, staining, or sealing. It just needs an occasional wash-down. The material is also strong relative to its weight, reducing installation labor while still holding up structurally.
“Aluminum readily meets safety codes, including tight picket spacing required around pools,” explains Rende. "It comes in enough finishes and styles for a modern or traditional look, all while keeping sight lines open, something privacy-focused materials can't offer.”

Shapes Unlimited provides an overview comparison of ornamental aluminum with other fencing materials:
VS. VINYL: Vinyl prioritizes privacy but can crack or warp and expands/ contracts with temperature swings. Aluminum holds its shape and resists wind damage better.
VS. CHAIN LINK: Chain link is the budget option but looks industrial and can rust. Aluminum raises curb appeal and tends to increase property value.
VS. WOOD: Wood looks appealing at first but needs ongoing staining and sealing, is vulnerable to rot and insects, and has a shorter lifespan. Aluminum costs more upfront but wins decisively over a 10-to-20-year horizon.
For contractors and developers, aluminum's appeal goes beyond looks. Panelized systems install faster, quality is consistent batch to batch, and code compliance is straightforward without customization — reducing callbacks and warranty claims. “That consistency matters when fencing dozens of homes in one development rather than a single backyard,” says Rende.
Across residential yards, pool enclosures, multi-family developments, and commercial properties, aluminum fencing is increasingly seen not as a premium alternative but as the logical upgrade. “It costs more than chain link or wood upfront, but lower maintenance, longer lifespan, and stronger resale value tend to make it the cheaper option long-term — a shift reshaping how homeowners and builders approach fencing decisions,” says Rende.
SHAPES Unlimited Inc. offers a full range of ornamental aluminum fence, rail, and gate solutions backed by in-stock inventory programs and consistent powder-coated finishes. With reliable lead times and support spanning dealer, builder, and builder channels, SHAPES Unlimited is equipped to handle projects of any scale.
"As we celebrate our 30-year anniversary, SHAPES Unlimited remains committed to our mission to consistently challenge the status quo in developing value-added products and business solutions to meet our customers' evolving needs,” says Rende. “This is made possible by our internal team's collaboration, our global supplier network, and the expertise of our valued customers.”

When Global Power & Construction (GPC), an Illinois general contracting firm, was contracted to build dozens of Montessori schools in the Midwest, they knew exactly who they could trust with the safety of thousands of children. “We’ve worked with Complete Fence on many projects over the years,” says Dylan Fuller, with GPC, “and we’ve seen first-hand their commitment to quality and strong partnerships. Their sales representative, Matt Breen was especially great to deal with.”
Complete Fence is a multi-generation, veteran-owned company based in Batavia, Illinois. Thanks to the efforts of a strong team and the leadership of its chairman, Kevin Hohe, it’s grown into one of the largest single-location fence companies in the United States. “Running a fence business certainly has its challenges, but after years of trial & error, I believe we found the formula to build the type of team and culture that opens the door to projects like this and that’s led to our success,” says Hohe. “I’m glad to see that those efforts are recognized by our clients.”
The school projects typically consisted of approximately 700feet of ornamental aluminum in two heights: 4-foot was used for internal playgrounds, and 6-foot on the perimeter. Gates included panic bars and, as with most facilities that serve children, the code called for narrower 3-inch picket spacing. The product of choice for the fence was a commercial grade with ¾-inch pickets produced by Elite Fence Products. “As the 2nd generation owner of a family business myself, I take the responsibility of continuing a family legacy very seriously and I’m honored that Kevin and his team chose us as a supplier,” says Karl Stinson, owner of Elite Fence.
Because the projects were spread over 10 states, logistics would be one of the first challenges to address, and fortunately for Complete, they had two veterans of the industry in Jeremy Schultz and John Landgren who coordinated efforts, both internally and in the field. “Scheduling deliveries with vendors while working around other trades at a jobsite that’s hundreds of miles away are just some of the challenges we face with these types of projects,” says Schultz. “Fortunately, I’ve been doing this a long time and we have a great team, so we avoided any big surprises.”

An example of having to work with and around other contractors was the need to communicate with landscapers installing stone and geogrid for a retaining wall where the fence would act as fall protection. With over 40 years of experience, Landgren has seen it all – or so he thought. “One of the things you quickly discover as you branch out into other parts of the country is how different working conditions can be compared to your home region. Circumstances like major temperature variances or digging in sand in one state, while another crew is dealing with bedrock or swamps in another state, definitely impacts a lot of decisions and forces you to think on your feet. Fortunately, our team is always up to the challenge.”
Hohe adds, “Complete Fence is a business whose core principles drive every action we take and my time as a Marine taught me the importance of a strong team to consistently uphold those principles. I’m proud of my employees for always striving for excellence and having a partner like Elite that aligns with our principles, which helped this project – and many others – go smoothly.”

The ornamental fence market continues to evolve as architects, engineers, owners and contractors seek solutions that deliver more than curb appeal. While ornamental fencing has traditionally been selected for its architectural appearance, today's commercial and industrial projects increasingly demand products that also provide enhanced security, long-term durability and specification flexibility.
This shift is especially evident in mission-critical markets such as data centers, airports, utility substations, correctional facilities and government campuses. As these projects become more sophisticated, perimeter security is no longer an afterthought — it's an integral part of the facility's design. Owners want fencing systems that create a professional appearance while helping deter unauthorized access and meeting increasingly stringent security requirements.
According to D.J Pfaadt, chief operating officer (COO), with FSG/Merchants Metals, one product that has stood the test of time in this evolving market is Guardsman® by FSG/Merchants Metals. “As one of the original high-security ornamental fence systems in the industry, Guardsman Curve Top was engineered to provide an anti-scale solution while maintaining the refined appearance expected of ornamental steel fencing. Today, the Guardsman family continues to offer a complete line of commercial and industrial ornamental fence systems that combine strength, durability and architectural appeal.”
The systems feature riveted galvanized steel construction, heavy-duty rails, patented high-security brackets and a durable powder-coated finish designed for long-term performance in demanding environments.
As the need for secure infrastructure grows, Pfaadt says Guardsman has become a trusted solution for projects where both appearance and performance matter. It has been specified on a wide range of high-profile applications, including data centers, airports, correctional facilities and government installations. One particularly notable project is Arlington National Cemetery, where the product's combination of architectural elegance and security made it an ideal choice.
Looking ahead, the ornamental fence market is well positioned for continued growth, driven by investment in critical infrastructure, transportation, utilities and hyperscale data centers. These facilities require perimeter solutions that not only enhance security but also complement the overall architecture of the site.

“At Fencing Supply Group, we're making a significant commitment to expanding our Guardsman offering as part of our broader strategy to provide contractors, architects and owners with proven perimeter security solutions,” adds Nick Polizzi, vice president – national strategy with FSG. “Whether the application requires a traditional ornamental appearance or an anti-scale design for mission-critical infrastructure, Guardsman continues to demonstrate that security and aesthetics don't have to be mutually exclusive.”

When the city of Lake Worth Beach, Florida, set out to protect two historic cemeteries that suffered years of neglect and vandalism, officials sought a solution that balanced security, durability and aesthetics.
Municipal leaders entrusted Bulldog Fence Company of South Florida with the project, which scoped the use of Catalyst® Fence Solutions. Bulldog Fence installed Catalyst’s industrial-grade aluminum Orleans fence with quad finials and circle accents, complemented by custom gates, creating a perimeter solution to withstand Florida’s harsh coastal environment while honoring the significance of the site. The result is a lasting and meaningful investment for the city that enhances security, preserves community assets and creates a welcoming environment for visitors.
This project was never just about installing a fence. The Pinecrest and I.A. Banks cemeteries serve as important cultural and historical landmarks within the community. Over time, deteriorating conditions left portions of the property vulnerable and diminished the overall appearance of spaces intended for remembrance and reflection. In addition, without a proper perimeter, the historic sites were subject to improper foot traffic and vandalism.
The community recognized the need to invest in these cemeteries and staged a human chain protest in 2023, which played a pivotal role in persuading the city commission to act. City leaders heard their concerns and issued a call for bids to install a fence around the perimeter. They then contracted Bulldog Fence to install Catalyst Fence Solutions to secure the site.
The challenge for commercial fence projects is that they typically force a choice between security and appearance. Chain-link and industrial fencing may provide protection, but often create an appearance that feels out of place around certain properties, such as memorial spaces.
Fortunately, Bulldog Fence Company won the bid with the city of Lake Worth Beach by including Catalyst’s Orleans fence system, a product that balances aesthetics with functionality and durability. The team was able to deliver a strong perimeter protection, long-term durability, open sightlines, architectural character and an overall welcoming appearance for visitors with Catalyst’s fencing.
The Pinecrest and I.A. Banks cemeteries are located less than a mile from the Atlantic Ocean, which meant that material durability was a priority. Salt air, humidity and constant exposure to the elements can rapidly deteriorate traditional fence systems.
Catalyst’s powder-coated aluminum fencing undergoes 10,000-hour salt spray testing – more than three times the industry-standard 3,000-hour benchmark – which helps ensure long-term performance in harsh coastal environments.

The selected aluminum fencing offers corrosion and fade resistance, lowmaintenance requirements, a long lifespan and overall reduced replacement costs. The investment protects both the site and the public resources by minimizing ongoing maintenance demands or near-term replacement costs.
In addition, Catalyst’s ornamental fencing is an elevated material selection for a historical site. It delivers the needed safety and security without visual heaviness. The local community appreciated the elevated curb appeal, with one resident telling the local news, “The whole corner looks different. It looks so upgraded here; it gives them the respect they deserve.”
This project was also a success due to the trusted relationship between Catalyst Fence Solutions and Bulldog Fence Company. The more than 15 year working relationship between the companies means Bulldog trusted Catalyst’s product performance, reliable product inventory and ability to meet the project’s timelines.
A unique component of this project is the large, ornamental entry gates. These gates serve as both a functional and symbolic entrance to the cemetery grounds. This project leveraged large-format swing gates with decorative arch
details and Catalyst’s patented T-slot post system. This simplified an installation of this size and nature, while also delivering an elevated aesthetic for the community.
Today, the completed project provides more than perimeter security; it creates a more welcoming visitor experience, greater protection for cemetery grounds, enhanced visual character and long-term preservation of important community landmarks. This project demonstrates how thoughtful infrastructure investments can strengthen neighborhoods while honoring local history.
The Pinecrest and I.A. Banks Cemetery projects demonstrate that municipal improvements can do more than solve functional challenges. When thoughtfully designed and executed, they can help preserve local history, strengthen community pride and ensure important spaces remain protected for generations to come.

More fence contractors are seeing railing work bundled into their bids, particularly on multifamily housing, sports venues and large commercial projects. One site may require ornamental perimeter fencing, decorative pedestrian barriers and elevated deck or balcony railing, all as part of the same package.
That trend rewards contractors who understand both product categories. It also highlights one of the industry's biggest challenges: custom fabrication.
Fence and railing rarely fit standard dimensions. Every deck, stair run, entrance and sloped landscape presents unique conditions. Contractors either need a supplier capable of fabricating to exact specifications or must spend valuable labor hours modifying panels in the field.
Though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, fence and railing serve very different purposes.
A railing is primarily a fall-protection barrier. It always includes a top and bottom rail, with the infill terminating between the horizontal rails. Infill may consist of pickets, cable, glass or mesh. Building codes typically require railing to be 42 inches high, or 36 inches in certain residential applications. While railing is commonly used on elevated surfaces, it can also provide an attractive decorative boundary at ground level.
"From an architectural standpoint, railing and ornamental fencing often complement one another, but they serve different functions and are designed to meet different code requirements," says Ryan Nichols, vice president of sales at Superior Aluminum. "Understanding those differences is important when you're planning a project that includes both."
By comparison, the primary purpose of ornamental fencing is to secure property, define boundaries and control access.
Fence is generally taller than railing, typically ranging from 60 to 72 inches, and often features pickets that extend beyond the top and bottom rails. Decorative spear tops, finials and other ornamental details help create an attractive appearance while maintaining security.
Because railing is intended to prevent falls, it is subject to stricter building code requirements governing height, load capacity and infill spacing. Fence generally does not carry the same structural requirements, but it still demands precision to achieve a clean, consistent appearance across changing grades and elevations.
Those differences make custom fabrication especially valuable. A supplier must ensure railing components meet code requirements while fabricating ornamental fence sections that align properly and maintain consistent aesthetics across the project.
"Contractors don't want to spend time cutting and reworking panels in the field if they don't have to," Nichols says. "When fence and railing arrive fabricated to the project's exact dimensions, installation goes faster and the finished product looks the way it was intended."
Superior Aluminum, an aluminum railing, ornamental fence and column manufacturer based in Russia, Ohio, fabricates both product lines to project-specific dimensions and assembles sections before shipment. The company says this approach helps contractors reduce field labor, improve installation efficiency and simplify projects that include both ornamental fencing and railing systems.
"Contractors appreciate being able to source both ornamental fence and railing from the same manufacturer," Nichols says. "It streamlines the project, helps ensure a consistent architectural look and makes the entire installation process more efficient."

Ornamental fencing has evolved far beyond decorative property boundaries. Today, architects, landscape architects, parks and recreation departments, and designers are increasingly specifying ornamental rope and net fencing as an attractive alternative to conventional fencing systems. These solutions provide safety and security while enhancing visitor experiences and complementing the surrounding environment.
Unlike metal or vinyl fencing, ornamental rope and net barriers define spaces while creating a more open and welcoming environment for visitors. Their open design encourages natural movement and helps create inviting spaces in parks, playgrounds, attractions, and other public environments.
The primary purpose of any fencing system is to protect people and property. Ornamental fencing accomplishes this while blending into the overall site design.
“Rope and net barriers help establish safe boundaries, direct pedestrian traffic, separate activity zones, and restrict access to hazardous areas without creating a harsh visual barrier,” says Tammy Raymond, with InCord. “This balance between function and aesthetics is especially valuable in spaces designed for interaction and engagement, where visitors can explore, connect, and enjoy their surroundings in a safe environment.”
InCord specializes in custom rope, netting, and barrier systems designed for recreational and public environments, helping designers achieve both performance requirements and aesthetic goals.
One of the greatest advantages of ornamental rope and net fencing is its versatility. Designers can incorporate these systems into projects ranging from community parks and playgrounds to zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, resorts, miniature golf courses, and theme parks.
Suspended walkways are another growing application. Rope railings and netted side panels provide reliable fall protection while allowing visitors to experience elevated views of the surrounding landscape. Because these structures require minimal ground disturbance, they can also help preserve natural habitats and existing vegetation.
“Rather than serving as simple safety features, rope bridges and netted walkways often become memorable design elements that encourage play, exploration, and interaction,” adds Raymond.
She says material selection plays an important role in the long-term performance of ornamental fencing systems. High-tenacity polypropylene and polyester are commonly specified fibers because they offer excellent strength, weather resistance, UV stability, and low maintenance requirements.
Depending on the application, designers may select different rope diameters, net mesh sizes, colors, and hardware finishes to complement the project’s architectural style while meeting performance and safety requirements. Custom fabrication allows fencing systems to adapt to challenging layouts, elevation changes, and unique site conditions that standard fencing products may not accommodate.

Beyond safety, ornamental fencing contributes to how visitors interact with a space. Well-designed barriers naturally guide pedestrian circulation, protect landscaping, reduce congestion, and create clearly defined gathering and activity areas. They help organize spaces in an intuitive way while improving the overall visitor experience.
“As communities continue investing in thoughtfully designed public spaces, ornamental fencing has evolved into more than a safety feature,” says Raymond. “These systems integrate seamlessly into recreational environments while combining durability, functionality, and visual appeal. When thoughtfully designed and properly specified, this does more than create a boundary—it enhances the character, usability, and overall experience of the spaces people enjoy every day.”

Playgrounds are designed to spark imagination, encourage activity and bring communities together, but safety is what makes it all possible. From regulatory codes and protective fencing to secure gate hardware and innovative play equipment, we’re highlighting some of the latest solutions helping contractors, schools and parks build safer, smarter and more engaging places where parents can let their children explore with confidence.

As schools prepare for a new academic year, contractors and facility managers are taking a fresh look at one of the campus's most important safety features: playground fencing and gate hardware.
While perimeter fencing helps define play areas and deter unauthorized access, the effectiveness of any playground enclosure ultimately depends on selecting the right fence and hardware for the application.
"Every playground presents different security challenges, so there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution," says Jennifer Klassen, owner of DAC Industries, a leading manufacturer and supplier of high quality gate hardware. "The key is matching the fence style and gate hardware to the level of security, accessibility and code compliance the facility requires."
Material selection plays an important role in overall performance. Chain link fencing remains a popular choice for athletic fields and areas where visibility is important, while wood fencing provides additional privacy for playgrounds and childcare facilities. Ornamental steel fencing offers durability and enhanced security, particularly for playgrounds located near busy streets or high-traffic areas.
Gate hardware is equally critical. Klassen says self-latching hardware helps reduce the likelihood of young children leaving a playground unsupervised while still allowing convenient access for staff and authorized adults. "Our Auto-Latch is designed to be intuitive for adults while remaining difficult for small children to operate. And when additional security is needed, facilities can easily add a padlock without sacrificing ease of use."

For emergency egress, panic hardware provides safe exit while meeting applicable life safety requirements. In areas requiring additional security, alarmed panic devices can alert staff if someone exits the playground unexpectedly.
"Schools and childcare facilities have different operational and code requirements, so it's important to understand the needs of each project before selecting hardware," Klassen adds. "Working with experienced fence professionals helps ensure the finished system provides the right balance of safety, security and accessibility."
As school districts continue investing in campus safety, properly specified fencing and gate hardware remain essential components in creating secure outdoor environments where students can learn and play with confidence. Learn more at dacindustries.com

NetPlay, a division of InCord, has expanded its early childhood playground offerings with the introduction of the Mushroom Spinner and Mushroom Swing, two motion-based play features designed specifically for children ages 2 to 5.
Featuring a whimsical mushroom-inspired design, both products encourage movement, social interaction and sensory development while adding a distinctive visual element to playgrounds, parks, schools and childcare facilities.
"The early years are critical for developing balance, coordination and confidence," says Tammy Raymond with InCord. "The Mushroom Spinner and Mushroom Swing were designed to give young children safe, engaging opportunities to explore movement while encouraging imaginative and social play."
The Mushroom Spinner allows children to sit, lean and spin together, promoting balance, strength and cooperative play through smooth, controlled motion. The Mushroom Swing offers a gentle swaying experience that supports sensory development while providing a comfortable space for independent or side-byside play.

Both products feature an elevated center design that encourages multiple styles of play and allows children to interact at their own comfort level.
"We wanted to create products that are as inviting visually as they are developmentally beneficial," says Raymond. "Whether installed as standalone features or incorporated into a larger playground, these products help create spaces where children can build confidence while simply enjoying the experience of play."
Designed for commercial playground applications, the Mushroom Spinner and Mushroom Swing are manufactured with durable, weather-resistant materials and meet applicable industry safety standards. Both are available in multiple color options and can be incorporated into custom playground designs.
As part of InCord's NetPlay product line, the new Mushroom play features reflect the company's continued focus on combining innovative design, durability and child-centered play experiences for parks, schools, childcare centers and other recreational facilities.

A fence around a playground can appear to be the simplest job on a contractor's schedule. Set the posts, hang the panels, latch the gate. But in the eyes of regulators, insurers and increasingly the courts, that fence is not a boundary marker. It is life-safety infrastructure, and it is held to a standard few other fence installations must meet.
The stakes explain the scrutiny. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, playgrounds send an estimated 190,000-plus children to emergency rooms every year. While falls from equipment remain the leading cause of injury, the perimeter plays its own quiet role in the safety equation: keeping children away from traffic, water, and other nearby hazards, and keeping unwelcome visitors out. When a fence fails at that job, the consequences are measured in more than liability.
Unlike a backyard privacy fence, playground fencing answers to three levels of oversight. At the federal level, the CPSC's Public Playground Safety Handbook, which was updated in 2025, sets the baseline guidance. The International Building Code adds height and material standards for school occupancies, and most states adopt it with their own amendments. Then state licensing agencies and local ordinances layer on requirements that frequently exceed the code minimums, particularly for childcare facilities.
The thread running through all of it is ASTM F2049, the safety performance specification for fences and barriers at public, commercial, and multi-family play areas. The CPSC handbook points installers to F2049 whenever a playground sits near hazards such as lakes, ponds, streams, or busy roadways. Several jurisdictions have adopted the standard outright, and even where it is voluntary, it functions as the recognized standard of care; the benchmark a courtroom will reach for when something goes wrong.
The requirements are more exacting than many installers expect, and they reshape familiar product choices.
Climbability is the first test. A compliant playground fence cannot offer footholds or handholds, a provision that disqualifies standard chain-link mesh
unless a smaller weave is used. Openings must be tight enough that a child cannot pass through, and the CPSC specifically flags gaps between 3.5 and 9 inches as a documented strangulation hazard. Decorative cutouts are limited to openings no larger than 1¾ inches.
Protrusions come next. Bolts, latch hardware, and other projections are prohibited below 54 inches above grade, the zone where a child's clothing or body could catch. Gates carry their own burden: self-closing, self-latching hardware mounted high enough to be out of reach of children under five, with maintenance gates kept locked whenever the playground is open.
Impact resistance is another feature that can be key where a play area sits near vehicle traffic. In these cases, certain runs of fence may need to withstand vehicular impact, a structural requirement that moves the project well beyond ornamental territory.
Visibility rounds out the design brief, and it cuts against instinct. The safest playground fence is one adults can see through. Supervision from outside the enclosure is part of the safety system, which is why solid privacy-style panels are generally the wrong answer even when a client asks for them.
For contractors, the takeaway is twofold. First, playground work rewards expertise. Schools, municipalities, daycare operators, and park departments are navigating a rulebook they often don't fully understand, and the installer who can speak fluently about F2049, gate hardware heights, and entrapment ranges becomes a consultant rather than a bidder. Second, the category is growing. Municipal capital budgets, federal recovery dollars, and a rising emphasis on inclusive play — including secure enclosures designed for children with special needs — have made playground fencing a steady line item in public projects across the country.
The humble playground fence has outgrown its reputation. It is engineered containment, supervision infrastructure, and legal protection wrapped into one installation, and the professionals who treat it that way will own the category.

The American Fence Association (AFA) and Ready, Set, Safe! are applauding the International Code Council's (ICC) approval of four significant gate safety proposals in June that will strengthen gate safety standards and maintenance requirements across residential, commercial and public settings.
The milestone follows more than 18 months of collaboration among AFA, Ready, Set, Safe!, the Door and Access Systems Manufacturers Association (DASMA), ICC representatives and other industry stakeholders committed to improving gate safety nationwide.
The approved proposals update the 2027 International Codes (I-Codes) to incorporate nationally recognized ASTM safety standards for manual horizontal slide gates (ASTM F1184) and manual swing gates (ASTM F900), while strengthening maintenance requirements for existing gate systems. The changes affect the International Building Code® (IBC), International Residential Code® (IRC), International Existing Building Code® (IEBC) and International Property Maintenance Code® (IPMC).
Among the approved changes are:
• Expanding IBC Section 3110 to include ASTM F1184 and ASTM F900 for manual gates alongside existing requirements for automatic gates.
• Requiring existing gates to comply with updated IBC requirements when altered, repaired or replaced.
• Updating the IRC Appendix to incorporate ASTM F1184 and ASTM F900.
• Adding gate definitions and safety requirements to the IPMC to strengthen maintenance expectations for existing gates.
"This is a major milestone for the industry's ongoing efforts to improve gate safety," says Michael Reed, executive director of the American Fence Association. "AFA is proud to have worked alongside Ready, Set, Safe!, DASMA and other industry leaders to advance stronger, more consistent standards. These code updates will help promote proper installation and maintenance practices while reducing injuries associated with gate systems."
For Ready, Set, Safe! co-founder Eric Quanbeck, the approval represents the culmination of a deeply personal mission. Quanbeck began advocating for stronger gate safety standards after his seven-year-old son, Alex, was killed when a 400-pound gate fell on him during recess at his elementary school.
"After losing our son Alex, we committed ourselves to making sure stronger safeguards exist for other families," Quanbeck says. "These approvals represent an important step forward in helping prevent serious injuries and fatalities caused by unsafe gates. We're grateful to the ICC, AFA and the many industry professionals who made these improvements possible."

The International Codes are adopted throughout the United States and in approximately 100 countries. As jurisdictions adopt the 2027 editions, the approved changes have the potential to improve safety in schools, parks, apartment communities, commercial properties and other public spaces around the world.
"The ICC code development process is transparent, consensus-based and inclusive," says Kevin McOsker, vice president of technical resources for the International Code Council. "These approved proposals to the 2027 I-Codes will enhance gate safety provisions across multiple model codes and help protect the lives of more than two billion people globally."
AFA and Ready, Set, Safe! will continue working with industry partners to promote education, training and awareness surrounding gate safety and proper installation, inspection and maintenance practices.

Merlo America is proud to welcome Piranha Rentals to its U.S. dealer network, bringing Merlo’s advanced telehandlers, attachments, parts and service support to customers across South Louisiana.
Headquartered in Houma, with rental facilities serving Venice, Fourchon and Plaquemine, the family-owned equipment rental company supports offshore oil and gas, petrochemical, construction, pipeline, homebuilding and industrial markets. Founded in 2008 by CEO Jimmy Lirette, it has since built its reputation on dependable equipment, fast response and 24/7 support.
“Our mission has always been to power the oilfield with dependable equipment and no-excuse service,” says Lirette. “When equipment is down, customers need support immediately. That’s why our committed team is available 24/7, with the people and capability in place to respond.”
Its location network reflects the region it serves. Fourchon places the company close to one of the Gulf Coast’s most active offshore energy hubs, while Plaquemine connects Piranha Rentals to petrochemical and plant-building customers near Baton Rouge. As an authorized Merlo America dealer, Piranha Rentals will offer sales, rentals, parts and service support across its Louisiana locations. Across the region, Piranha Rentals supports customers with rental equipment and hands-on technical expertise, helping keep work moving across demanding jobsites. Its understanding of offshore and industrial environments has also shaped a focus on equipment that arrives in the right condition from the start.

“Every machine has to earn our customers’ trust before it leaves the yard,” adds Lirette. “It needs to be clean, tested and ready to work, because that is the standard our customers expect from us. Merlo supports that same standard, giving us a premium product line we can stand behind with confidence.”
Piranha Rentals first added Merlo telehandlers to its fleet as demand grew for higher-quality lifting and material handling equipment. Today, the company operates 36 Merlo telehandlers across oilfield, construction, industrial and pipeline applications. For the dealership, Merlo’s appeal lies in how far the machines can go beyond traditional lift-and-place work. Built as multi-application platforms, Merlo telehandlers help customers handle a wider range of tasks with one machine, reducing reliance on multiple pieces of equipment.
Designed around operator confidence and productivity, the range combines enclosed cabs, strong visibility, advanced stability systems and intuitive controls. Its portfolio of purpose-built attachments also allows operators to move between tasks with greater efficiency.
That flexibility is already being put to work across the dealership’s customer base. In oilfield, industrial and pipeline applications, customers are using Merlo telehandlers with attachments such as winches and grapple buckets, giving them a practical way to consolidate equipment on site. Smaller models are also creating opportunities with construction and homebuilding customers, where compact size and easy transport are important advantages.
“Customers are realizing these machines can
do far more than traditional telehandler work,” says Lirette. “With the right attachments, a Merlo telehandler becomes a multi-purpose platform that can help them take on more work with one unit, instead of bringing in additional equipment for every task.”
For Merlo America, the partnership expands local access to equipment and service support in a region where reliability is critical.
“Piranha Rentals brings exactly the kind of market knowledge and service commitment we look for in a dealer partner,” says Cole Renken, general manager at Merlo America. “Their team understands the realities of working in South Louisiana, where uptime, safety and responsive support are essential. With deep customer relationships and a strong presence across key industrial markets, they are well positioned to help Merlo customers get more from every machine.”
The appointment also enables Piranha Rentals to support Merlo customers beyond the rental fleet, adding dedicated sales, parts and service capability backed by Merlo America’s dealer expertise. “Merlo America has made it easy for us to take that next step,” says Lirette. “Their team has gone above and beyond with training, product knowledge and practical support, helping us build the dealership the right way.”

CEO, I-TECH SUPPORT with

Over the past several decades, fence companies have been adopting new technologies to facilitate efficiency and profitability in their business models. Armando Huerta is CEO of i-Tech Support, whose work has helped fence companies simplify operations, strengthen their technology and stay focused on what they do best. i-Tech provides a broad range of technology services, including Acumatica Cloud ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), a software program designed to assist small and mid-size businesses manage their business operations. Fence News recently caught up with Huerta to learn more about his career and his insight into the industry.
HOW DOES I-TECH SUPPORT HELP FENCE COMPANIES IMPROVE OPERATIONS?
Our primary focus within the fencing industry is to help companies improve operational performance through Acumatica Cloud ERP. Many fence companies have grown successfully over the years using a combination of spreadsheets, disconnected software applications, and tribal knowledge. That approach can work for a while, but as organizations grow, it often becomes harder to maintain visibility and control across the business. We help fence manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, and contractors bring their operations together on a single platform. Acumatica connects financials, inventory, purchasing, project management, production, sales, and reporting into one system, providing leadership teams with real-time information and greater confidence in their decision making. The result is better operational visibility, improved inventory control, stronger financial reporting, more efficient processes, and ultimately a more scalable business. Instead of spending time chasing information, leaders can focus on serving customers, improving profitability, and growing the company.
IN WHAT WAYS HAVE YOU CONTRIBUTED TO THE SUCCESS OF I-TECH?
One of my primary contributions has been helping establish a clear growth strategy
while staying focused on what matters most: client success. Over the last few years, we have expanded our ERP practice, invested in our people, strengthened our leadership team, and continued to evolve our service offerings to meet the changing needs of our clients. I am particularly proud of the culture we have built. We have a team that genuinely cares about helping clients succeed, and I believe that commitment is one of the biggest reasons for our continued growth.
AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AT I-TECH, TELL US HOW YOU GOT YOUR START. I was born in Mexico City and moved to the United States as a teenager, growing up in Houston, Texas. From an early age, I was surrounded by examples of hard work and perseverance. My mother was widowed when I was three months old and worked multiple jobs to make sure I had everything I needed. She made countless sacrifices for our family, and her determination had a profound impact on me. Because of her support system, I was also fortunate to spend a lot of time with my grandparents. My grandfather owned a successful small business, and some of my earliest memories are of being at his shop, helping with orders, or at least thinking I was helping. Looking back, those experiences gave me my first exposure to entrepreneurship. I watched how he treated customers, employees,
and vendors with respect and dignity. I learned that business is ultimately about people, relationships, and trust. Those lessons have stayed with me throughout my career and continue to shape my leadership style today. Ironically, as a child I wanted to become a doctor. I was drawn to the challenge of the profession and admired the opportunity to help people improve their lives. At the same time, I was always fascinated by technology. I built my first computer when I was 12 years old and was constantly interested in the latest gadgets and emerging technologies. Looking back, it's interesting to see how those interests eventually came together. While I didn't become a physician, I still get a tremendous amount of satisfaction from helping organizations solve problems, improve performance, and achieve their goals through technology.
DESCRIBE THE CAREER PATH THAT LED YOU TO BECOME CEO AT I-TECH.
My career has always been centered around a passion of wanting to leave something better than it was before I got involved. I spent nearly a decade in the oil and gas industry, solving high-stakes complex technical and supply chain problems. I gained firsthand experience with operational excellence, process improvement, and large-scale business systems, including how technology can help businesses stay ahead. Throughout my career, I have worked

with organizations across a variety of industries, helping them modernize operations, implement technology, and navigate change. Those experiences reinforced my belief that technology should never be implemented for technology's sake. It should be a strategic tool that helps businesses become more efficient, more profitable, and more competitive. Over time, my responsibilities expanded beyond technology into leadership, business strategy, and organizational development. Those experiences ultimately led me to i-Tech Support and eventually to the opportunity to serve as CEO.
HOW HAS CHANGING TECHNOLOGY AFFECTED THE FENCING INDUSTRY?
Technology is changing every industry, including the fencing industry, at a faster pace than ever before. While there is a lot of excitement around artificial intelligence, many business leaders are discovering that AI is only as valuable as the data behind it. That's one of the reasons I believe ERP systems have become so important. ERP is no longer just an accounting system. It is the
operational backbone of the business and the single source of truth for critical information. Companies that have accurate, integrated, and accessible data are in a much better position to take advantage of emerging technologies like AI. In many ways, ERP is becoming the foundation that enables AI. If your data lives in spreadsheets, disconnected systems, or individual employees' heads, AI has very little to work with. But when your business runs on a modern ERP platform, you create the data structure and visibility needed to unlock the full potential of AI, automation, and advanced analytics.
WHAT DO YOU WANT THE FENCING INDUSTRY TO KNOW ABOUT I-TECH?
At i-Tech Support we are proud of serving the fencing industry. We look forward to helping the industry thrive through human driven technologies for many years to come.

One of the most important financial measurements in any fence company is Cost of Goods Sold (COGS). While many contractors know what they charge for a project, far fewer know exactly what it costs to build it. Without understanding those costs, it's impossible to accurately measure profitability or make sound business decisions.
COGS represents the direct costs required to produce and install a fence. These are expenses that occur only because a project was sold. Typical examples include materials, direct installation labor, payroll taxes, production employee benefits, concrete, hardware, fasteners, freight, rental equipment, subcontractors and other job-specific consumables. It boils down to labor, materials, incidentals and, when you really dial it in, cover your overhead
A simple way to determine whether an expense belongs in COGS is to ask one question: If this project had never been sold, would this expense still exist? If the answer is no, it is generally a direct job cost. If the expense would exist whether a project was sold or not, it is typically considered overhead.
Unfortunately, many contractors fail to capture every direct cost. They underestimate labor hours, overlook payroll taxes, ignore material waste, forget freight charges or fail to account for consumable supplies. Individually these costs may seem insignificant, but together they can erode thousands of dollars in annual profit.
Understanding COGS is also essential because it determines your Gross Profit, the amount remaining after direct job costs have been deducted from revenue. Gross Profit is not the same as Net Profit. Gross Profit must first pay for every overhead expense, including office salaries, rent, insurance, vehicles, marketing, software, utilities and administrative costs.
Only after overhead has been covered does the company begin generating true profit.
This is where many business owners misunderstand their financial performance. A project may appear profitable because money remains after paying for materials and labor, but if that Gross Profit is insufficient to recover overhead, the company is actually losing money. Being busy does not guarantee profitability. In fact, many contractors become busier while losing more money because they consistently underprice their work.
Every owner should know three critical financial numbers:
• Their average Cost of Goods Sold percentage
• Their Gross Profit Margin
• The Gross Profit Margin required to fully recover overhead and achieve the desired Net Profit
Without knowing these numbers, pricing becomes guesswork rather than a calculated business decision.
Improving COGS management begins with several disciplined practices. Capture every direct job cost. Track labor hours accurately and understand production rates. Monitor waste, purchasing errors, and material overruns. Most importantly, compare estimated costs to actual costs after every completed project. Each completed job becomes valuable data that improves future estimating accuracy.
Cost of Goods Sold is much more than an accounting term. It is one of the most valuable management tools available to a contractor. Accurate job costing improves estimating, purchasing, scheduling, inventory control, production efficiency and crew accountability. It also allows owners to identify trends before they become financial problems.
Successful fence companies understand that profitability is never accidental. It is the result of knowing exactly what every project costs to build, pricing work to recover both direct costs and overhead and earning an appropriate return for the risk of operating the business.
One principle every contractor should remember is this: Revenue does not create profit. Accurate pricing does. Accurate pricing begins with understanding your Cost of Goods Sold. When you know your true job costs, you can establish pricing that consistently produces the Gross Profit necessary to recover overhead and generate a healthy Net Profit. That financial discipline transforms estimating from guesswork into a reliable system for long-term success.
At the end of the day, materials alone do not determine profitability. Labor alone does not determine profitability. Profitability comes from understanding every cost, measuring every project and making informed decisions based on accurate financial data.
Companies that master Cost of Goods Sold don't just build quality fences—they build financially strong businesses. When do you get started?

by Jason Liu, Founder & CEO of

For many years, success in the fence industry was largely driven by pricing, local inventory, regional coverage, and sales relationships. In a relatively stable global trade environment, companies that managed inventory well and maintained strong customer networks were often able to grow steadily and predictably.
But over the past several years, the industry has quietly entered a very different era. Ocean freight volatility, global tariffs, port congestion, geopolitical instability, raw material inflation, container shortages, rail delays, and increasing customs scrutiny have fundamentally changed the way fencing materials move across the world. What was once considered a relatively straightforward supply process has become significantly more complex and unpredictable.
Today, one of the biggest challenges facing fence companies is no longer simply selling products — it is securing stable supply.
And that shift may permanently reshape the future of the fence industry. The Industry Is Moving from Inventory Competition to Supply Chain Competition
Traditionally, many companies in the fencing industry competed through warehouse capacity and regional inventory positioning. The model was simple: maintain stock, replenish inventory, and distribute materials quickly to local markets.
That system worked well during periods of relative stability. However, the events of the past several years have exposed the limitations of relying solely on inventory as a competitive advantage.
When global shipping disruptions occur, inventory can disappear quickly. When vessels roll shipments for multiple weeks, when ports become congested, or when raw material costs suddenly rise, the ability to simply “buy more inventory” becomes increasingly difficult.
As a result, the industry is beginning to shift toward a new reality: The companies best positioned for long-term success may not necessarily be the ones with the largest warehouses, but the ones with the strongest and most resilient supply chains.
That means:
• Stronger factory relationships
• Better production visibility
• Long-term manufacturing partnerships
• Multi-country sourcing capabilities
• Freight flexibility
• Risk management strategies
• Greater control over raw materials and production planning
In many ways, the fence industry is no longer competing only through inventory; it is increasingly competing through supply chain resilience.
Many in the industry initially viewed recent disruptions as temporary problems that would eventually normalize. But as time has passed, it has become increasingly clear that global supply chains may never fully return to the predictability that existed a decade ago.
The industry has now experienced repeated waves of disruption:
• Section 301 tariffs
• Rapid ocean freight increases
• Red Sea shipping instability
• Port congestion across major gateways
• Rail bottlenecks
• Extended customs examinations
• Inflationary pressure on aluminum and steel
• Geopolitical uncertainty affecting trade routes
• Rising insurance and transportation costs
These challenges have forced companies throughout the fencing sector to rethink how they source materials and manage long-term supply stability.
The old assumption that products could always move freely, cheaply, and predictably across global markets no longer holds true in the same way. Instead, the industry is operating in what can best be described as a “highvolatility supply environment.” In this environment, flexibility and preparation become essential.
One of the most important changes emerging from this new environment is the increasing importance of long-term supplier relationships.
Historically, purchasing decisions in many sectors of the fencing industry were often heavily price driven. Buyers frequently moved between suppliers based primarily on short-term pricing advantages. But global instability has changed the conversation.
Today, more companies are beginning to prioritize questions such as:
• Can this supplier consistently deliver during difficult market conditions?
• Do they have direct factory relationships?
• Can they secure production capacity during peak demand?
• Do they understand international logistics and customs challenges?
• Are they financially stable enough to absorb temporary market disruptions?
• Can they adapt when trade conditions suddenly change?
These considerations are becoming increasingly important because unstable supply can create far greater costs than modest price differences.

Every course is designed by contractors and industry experts who understand what it takes to succeed in today's fence industry. Gain proven strategies to improve operations, develop your team, increase profitability, and build a stronger business.
Invest in your people. Strengthen your company. Build your future.

"The fence industry has always been built on hard work, trust, relationships, and long-term commitment. Those fundamentals are unlikely to change."

For contractors, distributors, and building supply companies, delayed materials can impact labor scheduling, customer relationships, installation timelines, and overall project profitability.
As a result, reliability is becoming more valuable. And in many cases, longterm strategic partnerships are beginning to replace purely transactional purchasing models.
Another major trend likely to accelerate over the next decade is supply diversification.
Many companies are no longer comfortable relying on a single-country sourcing model. Instead, businesses are increasingly exploring multi-country manufacturing strategies to reduce exposure to tariffs, shipping disruptions, and geopolitical risk.
This shift is already influencing sourcing decisions across wood, steel, aluminum, and related building material sectors.
While China remains one of the world’s most important manufacturing centers, more companies are simultaneously exploring production and processing opportunities in countries such as Cambodia, Vietnam, Mexico, and others.
Late shipments, unstable supply, unexpected tariffs, customs delays, freight spikes, and inconsistent production quality can ultimately create significant downstream losses for distributors, contractors, and end users alike.
Because of this, many companies are beginning to rethink how they define value.
Increasingly, value may be measured not only by price, but also by:
• Supply consistency
• Delivery reliability
• Production transparency
• Communication quality
• Long-term planning capability
• Risk management capacity
In the years ahead, the companies that succeed may not necessarily be the ones offering the lowest prices, but the ones capable of delivering stability in an increasingly unstable world.
The fence industry has always been built on hard work, trust, relationships, and long-term commitment. Those fundamentals are unlikely to change.

The goal is not necessarily to replace one country with another, but rather to create greater flexibility and supply continuity. For the fence industry, this diversification trend may become one of the defining structural changes of the next decade.

What is changing is the environment surrounding the industry. Global supply chains are becoming more complex. International trade conditions are evolving rapidly. Customers increasingly expect both competitive pricing and dependable delivery at the same time.

Meeting those expectations will require a different level of operational discipline and long-term strategic thinking than ever before.
For many years, the industry has, understandably, focused heavily on competitive pricing.

Price will always remain important, however, the events of recent years have demonstrated that the lowest initial cost does not always produce the lowest long-term cost.

The next generation of industry leaders may ultimately be defined not only by the products they sell, but by how effectively they can navigate uncertainty while continuing to support their customers consistently and reliably.
And in that environment, supply chain stability may become one of the most valuable assets any company can possess.

We had a very interesting (and entertaining!) closing speaker at the CLFMI Summer Meeting in Vail, Colorado, at the end of June. Her name is Sheri Jacobs, and she has an impressive background in working with companies and associations who are trying to increase the productivity of their workforce. Her focus at our meeting was on the skills needed by managers to work with younger employees, as well as new employees who are just starting with their company.
Ironically, as she was speaking to our members, her new book, The Unexpected Power of Boundaries, was climbing the best-seller list in Amazon’s business category. I say it is ironic because she uses fences as a basis for much of her discussion related to using boundaries as a way to help manage and motivate your workforce.
Without turning this article into a book report, I just wanted to comment on how I thought she was really on to something that applies across the board for employers and managers. She said that telling employees to “think outside the box” is often a self-defeating attempt at increasing employee creativity and buy-in. That’s because most times owners/managers don’t really mean “anything goes” when they say that. There are limitations on what the company (or the job site manager) can actually do in many situations.

Donald Edward
“Don” Miller
July 28, 1946 –June 1, 2026
I liked the concepts she outlined, and some of the real-life situations our members discussed during the session. These discussions took me back to my very first job as a manager.
I only had three people working for me, and being a boss was a new experience. I thought I was pretty smart, and I knew I was a nice person, but I kept getting frustrated by two things:
1) I kept trying to give my employees room to be creative and to do things however they wanted (to “think out of the box”), but I never really got the kind of input from them I expected, nor the self-reliance I wanted them to have
2) My employees kept quitting on me!
I couldn’t figure it out. I had really tried to create a sense of teamwork, and I knew what motivated me as an employee. So why didn’t the people who worked for me respond the way I did to the opportunities presented to them?
Our company HR person, who did their exit interviews, was told by my ex-employees that I was a very nice guy but a terrible boss. They were never sure what I wanted them to do.
Listening to the CLFMI members at our Summer Meeting tell similar stories made Sheri Jacobs’ points more striking. And more practical.
If you want employees to begin to think about a
Donald Edward “Don” Miller, a pioneer of the fencing industry, passed away on June 1 at the age of 79. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy built on hard work, integrity, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to both his family and the fencing profession.
Don’s journey into the fencing industry began humbly –repairing a neighbor’s fence. Word quickly spread about the quality of his work, and before long, more neighbors were calling. What began as a simple act of kindness helping others evolved into a lifelong career spanning more than 50 years.
As the founder of Patriot Fence in the 1980s and later East Coast Fence and Guardrail of Brevard, Inc. in 1999, Don became a respected leader in the fencing industry. Under his guidance, both companies completed countless projects throughout Florida and beyond, including projects for NASA, Blue Origin, and SpaceX; Patrick Space Force Base, large-scale government and commercial properties, and professional athletic complexes. In 2002, World Fence News published an article celebrating a 14,000 linear-foot job Don completed through a
next-level solution to a problem, tell them what the limitations are up front. Give them some time frames, or some budget limitations, or some staffing restrictions, and then say you are open to any suggestions within these boundaries. That is way different than saying, “think outside the box.” Sheri said the boundaries you identify are like fences, but instead of saying, “Keep out,” they are saying, “Stretch your thinking all the way out to the fences; anything inside of them is safe.”
Once again, I learned there are many ways to think about fences, and how to use them to be successful in our industry.
As executive vice president of the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute for 38+ years, Mark Levin is also an author and avid promoter of the fence industry. He believes in the successful leadership qualities he promotes, including listening, delegating, consensus building, communications and effective decision-making.

swamp in St. Augustine. In true Don fashion, he told reporters it was one of his “easier” stretches. In 2016, World Fence News once again recognized Don highlighting his visionary use of bamboo as an eco-friendly fence solution for a 2000 linear foot project in Sarasota, Florida. His commitment to quality workmanship earned him widespread respect and recognition throughout the industry.
Yet Don’s greatest accomplishment was never measured by the number of projects completed or contracts awarded. It was measured by the people whose lives he touched. His influence extends far beyond the fences he built. It lives on through his family, the employees he mentored, the businesses he inspired, and the countless relationships he formed over a lifetime.
He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly; his children, Heather, Jared, and Stefani; his brother, Eddie, and sister, Gina; his cherished granddaughter, Emily; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn.

Have you ever stopped to think about the early experiences that shaped the way you lead today?
We often remember the challenges, the championships, the successful projects, or the day we started a business. What we remember less clearly are the day-to-day lived experiences that changed us over time. Looking back, however, we realize life was preparing us for something much bigger.
When I think about my own leadership journey, I find myself returning to three life experiences. Playing football taught me discipline and perseverance. Starting a fraternity chapter in college challenged me to earn the trust of peers, who had no reason to follow me, to create something new. And joining the Army taught me that leadership is measured less by authority and much more by responsibility.
At first glance, those experiences seem unrelated. Yet they all shared one important characteristic. Each demanded something from me before it ever gave me anything in return.
That simple lesson helped me start two companies, and it has stayed with me throughout my career. It has become even clearer since leading the American Fence Association.
There is a price to leadership.
We celebrate promotions, recognize achievements, and admire successful people who have overcome adversity. We see their influence and the impact they create. What we often overlook is everything they surrendered along the way. Leadership is not simply a position someone earns. It is a series of investments in life.
Whether you own a fence company, lead a manufacturing operation, manage a distribution branch, or supervise a sales team, leadership makes the same demand: You must give before you ask others to follow.
Many people aspire to leadership because they want greater responsibility, influence, and the opportunity to shape their organization's future. Those are worthy aspirations. What often comes as a surprise is that leadership never asks for a onetime payment. The price comes due every day.
I was reminded of that this week during a conversation with a contractor expanding from residential work into the commercial market. Larger projects and new opportunities were exciting, but he quickly discovered that commercial work demanded a different kind of leadership. Estimating became more complex. Cash flow mattered more. Project management, documentation and communication suddenly carried much greater weight. As we talked, he smiled and said, "I'm learning a lot." What struck me was that he wasn't just learning commercial construction. He was becoming the leader his growing business required.
A few days later, I spoke with the general manager of a manufacturing company that had just opened a new facility. The project was well planned, but reality had other ideas. Equipment delays, staffing challenges and unexpected legal setbacks threatened the timeline. The building will eventually be remembered as a successful expansion. What will stay with that leader are the countless decisions required to keep people focused, solve problems and maintain confidence when the outcome was still uncertain.
That is how leadership works.
Sometimes the price is patience. It is taking time to coach a new employee when it would be faster to do the work yourself. Sometimes the price is humility, admitting someone else has a better idea, or acknowledging your own mistakes. Sometimes it is courage, having the difficult conversation that everyone else hopes will simply go away. And sometimes it is the commitment to lifelong learning, recognizing that experience only creates wisdom when we continue to grow.
Everyone knows the difference between expenses and investments.
An expense is something you hope to recover. An investment is something you expect to grow.
The price of leadership is never an expense. Every difficult conversation handled with respect strengthens trust. Every coaching moment develops another leader. Every lesson learned from failure creates wisdom that cannot be purchased any other way. Over time, those investments compound, strengthening
our teams, our organizations, and ultimately ourselves.
Recently, I had the privilege of teaching another class of emerging leaders in AFA's Leadership Academy. Throughout the program, we discussed leadership theories, communication, trust, culture and influence. Yet the most meaningful lesson came from the participants themselves.
They realized leadership is less about having all the answers and more about making the daily investments that help others succeed. In many ways, they had rediscovered the same lesson that football, college and the Army taught me years ago.
The price of leadership is real. So is the reward. If you're ready to invest in your own leadership journey, I hope you'll consider joining us for AFA's
Leadership Academy this November. I think you'll leave with more than new leadership skills. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of the leader you are destined to become.

In the fencing industry, relationships matter. While quality workmanship and customer service are essential, many of the opportunities that help a business grow come through the people you know and the connections you maintain.
Networking isn't just about collecting business cards at trade shows or connecting on LinkedIn. It's about building genuine relationships with people who can help you solve problems, share ideas and open doors to new opportunities.
The good news is that most fence professionals are already networking, whether they realize it or not. Every supplier, contractor, manufacturer, distributor, customer and industry association contact is part of a network. The challenge is learning how to make that network work for you.
One of the best networking habits is staying visible. Attend industry events such as FENCETECH, regional association meetings and local business gatherings. Don't just show up. Actively engage in conversations, ask questions and share your experiences. People are more likely to remember someone who takes an interest in them than someone who simply hands out a business card.

The 2026 U.S. Houzz Outdoor Trends Study, covering over 1,100 U.S. homeowners, reveals that outdoor renovations are increasingly focused on everyday comfort rather than home resale value. Key trends include creating "indoor-quality" living spaces with lounge furniture, fire features, and lower-maintenance landscaping.
KEY FINDINGS:
• Everyday Living Over Resale: The motivation to renovate for resale value dropped to 15%. Instead, 83% of homeowners are motivated by a desire to extend their indoor living areas to the outside.
• Prioritizing Seating and Dining: Lounge or seating areas are the most popular outdoor additions (83%), followed by dining spaces (55%), quiet retreats (53%), gardening spots (49%), and cooking areas (48%).
• Outdoor Kitchen Upgrades: Cooking spaces feature high-tech additions, with 85% of outdoor kitchens featuring grills, alongside beverage refrigerators (62%), sinks (59%), pizza ovens (29%), and smokers (24%).
• Climate and Maintenance: Homeowners are focusing on sustainable, low-maintenance yards with native plants and drought-resistant landscaping.

Another key is to focus on giving before receiving. Introduce people to one another. Share resources. Offer advice when appropriate. Help others solve problems. The strongest networks are built on trust and mutual value, not transactions.
It's also important to stay in touch. Too often, people connect at an event and then disappear until they need something. A quick phone call, email or social media message can help maintain relationships long after the event ends. The best time to strengthen a connection is before you need it.
Networking can also be an invaluable source of knowledge. Whether you're looking for advice on a new product, guidance on a challenging project or insight into industry trends, chances are someone in your network has faced a similar situation before.
At its core, networking is about relationships. The more people you know, the more perspectives, resources and opportunities become available to you. In an industry built on trust, those relationships can be just as valuable as any tool in your truck.
Invest time in your network. Nurture and contribute to it. When done right, it becomes one of the most powerful assets your business has.

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.
Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.

Back in 2009, Vinny and Umesh Kotecha found themselves in hard times and decided to start delivering temporary fencing panels for suppliers. Vinny said he would listen to feedback from customers who were unhappy with the availability of the product and the service they were being given. Vinny saw an opportunity and decided to buy damaged panels, repair them, and then sell them to the customers. He continued listening to customer feedback about new products they wanted, the lead times they were being promised and how suppliers weren’t delivering on these promises. To solve this, Vinny and Umesh decided to keep the products fully stocked on the ground and make them standard stock; and in 2010, First Fence was born.
First Fence became the first fencing company in the UK to launch a website offering complete transparency on both pricing and on-the-ground stock. They had listened and delivered what customers wanted. In 2011, responding to feedback about missing items, they invested in a POD system, followed by an automated phone system in 2012. They consistently invested in technology that put transparency at the forefront for their customers. As the business grew, they continued to invest in stock, standards, and most importantly, people. They built a reputation as being true to their word and following through on what they promised to deliver.
“When I joined First Fence in 2012, it was a small team, only 10 of us,” says Stacey Grice, First Fence director. “We worked from a small, rented warehouse on a farm with a bit of land, delivering fencing across the UK. It was very much a one-stop shop. We may have been a small family-run firm, but ‘we,’ as a family, were big and bold, and so were our ideas. When I speak with Vinny and Umesh today, their message hasn’t changed since the early days. They still say that listening to our customers and being transparent across the board is one of the most important things we can do. Our hard work, forward thinking and our team press us forward. There are exciting times ahead.”
Vinny agrees that First Fence is not just a fencing company. “We are a service provider. Every decision we make is about improving the experience for our customers. We keep pushing the boundaries and exceeding customer expectations. We’re a technology and data-driven company with a strong focus on research and development, LPS 1175, high-security, and HVM. Our commitment to innovation has helped us achieve 20% year-over-year organic growth. Continued growth means continuing to invest in our people, our systems, and our assets.”
Ultimately, the company’s success comes down to a few core principles: honesty, integrity, customer loyalty and trust.
“We don’t always get it right, but we genuinely always try,” says Umesh. “When you’re starting out, you’ll make mistakes, and that’s part of the process. What matters is how quickly you learn from them and keep pushing forward.”
Today, that journey has reached an exciting new chapter as First Fence opens its first U.S. branch in Kennedale, Texas.
“It’s a huge step and there is a lot to learn, but Texas seemed like the right choice for us,” says Vinny. “It’s a market that values quality, reliability, and great customer service, values that have always been at the heart of First Fence. We want to offer a more consultative approach. Our goal has always been to solve problems for our customers. We believe in taking the time to understand what a customer needs, offering honest advice, and consistently delivering highquality service."
Rather than just choosing from a catalogue, customers can visit a large new showroom In Kennedale to compare styles and materials, ask questions, grab a coffee and a donut with one of the First Fence team members, and leave knowing they’ve made the right decision for their project.
“We want to be more than just a place that sells fencing. We want to build lasting relationships with our customers, so they feel like part of the First Fence family,” says Umesh.

First Fence is led by its customers and market demands. By listening closely to feedback, the team continues to do whatever it takes to serve their customers, because that’s how it all started and that’s exactly how they will continue. We listen. We care. We deliver.
