A Random Conversation with Owner, Kaye Jackson Of The Random Whine Written By: Shea McGee The Random Whine owner, Kaye Jackson, is not only a consummate business woman, but a breast cancer survivor who triumphed over the disease. While undergoing treatment, she would ask for wine instead of flowers not only to enjoy the wine, but to study it. Her passion grew into a deep desire to understand wine and all of the varieties of flavors that there were. From there, she traveled to Lodi to begin the journey that would lead her to creating The Random Whine.

FM: Wine is such an interesting but amazing choice for creating a business around. What was the experience in deciding to create a quality wine? Jackson: While going through my cancer journey, I longed for something to give me a sense of normalcy. I have always been intrigued by the wine process and immersed myself in studying the wine regions, etc. One thing I love about wine is how it brings people together. When you think of fun, random moments, there's always a glass of wine to accommodate a good time, and that's what The Random Whine is all about. FM: With so many varietals (flavors) out there in regards to wine, how did you go about choosing the ones that you currently have? Jackson: There's so many different ways to approach this, but I selected my favorites based out of the region of the winery that I am partnered with. I wanted to pick easy varieties that people knew about and could understand and relate to. Why make it complicated? FEMI MAGAZINE | 9

Continued… FM: You are a cancer survivor, and that alone is a blessing and highly commendable. While you were going through your ordeal, you wanted wine instead of flowers. What role did wine play in getting you through your treatments? Jackson: When you go through something like this it seems like everyone always thinks a card and flowers are the best sentiment, but flowers die and I didn't like the way that made me feel. Wine made me feel like another regular girl. Just holding a glass and pretending I could drink made me feel normal or didn't always remind me of the obvious that I was dealing with. I remember when I was going through treatment and a friend brought me a bottle of wine, but it needed to be aged 10 years before I could open it. This was ironic because at that moment dealing with this diagnosis, I honestly didn't know if I would be lucky enough to see tomorrow - let alone another 10 years. Thats why The Random Whine is so special - you open it now and enjoy it now. We enjoy our wine today, because tomorrow isn’t promised to us.

FM: The Random Whine is such a catchy name, what inspired the name? Jackson: The Random Whine is a polite encouragement for people to enjoy the fun, random moments of life. I love random conversations. I love meeting new people. I took my 'whines' and turned them into wine and that's always a great conversation starter over a glass of The Random Whine. FM: When you were purchasing wines, you would get one that was at a higher price point and one that was more affordable. Do you think that wines with a higher price point have any bearing on the taste of the wine being better? Jackson: There are many wines to choose from that are delicious and can appeal to anyone's pocket and taste buds. I know so many good wines that aren't $100 a bottle, and people will always go for what they like - similar to the foods you eat.

FM: For The Random Whine, in what ways do you take part in the wine-making process? Jackson: I love to be as hands-on as possible with every inch of my business. I provide feedback to the winery that includes my comments on taste, residual sugars, etc. I work closely with the winery to be sure that the flavor profile is something that I would like to taste and ultimately something that others would enjoy also. FM: It’s truly admirable that you’re giving proceeds to cancer survivors from the sales for The Random Whine. Will this be ongoing for all sales in the future as well? Jackson: Absolutely! The Random Whine is about giving back. This mission is obviously so close to me and it wouldn't be right for me to not share this journey with those who need support and love during their journey. I'm happy to be one of the few companies in my industry that is giving back in this way. Each year we partner with a local cancer organization in every state and give back. I hope this mission inspires other entrepreneurs in diverse industries to support their own philanthropic missions and change someone's life! FM: Between your Red Blend and Pinot Grigio, which is your go-to and why? Jackson: That's a hard one! I like both and now that we are expanding our line to seven varieties, they all have a special place in my heart. The great thing about such an expansive line is there is something for every occasion. I enjoy my reds in the cooler weather and my whites in the warmer weather, and when it's time to celebrate we pop a little bit of bubbly.

Kaye Jackson has more varieties joining The Random Whine family—Sweet Red, Moscato, Pinot Noir, Brut, and Brut Rosé. With such selections, The Random Whine will be enjoyed over many more tables, in laugh-filled and joyous rooms for any occasion. Kaye Jackson’s Random Whines will be a part of memories for many, and that is priceless. To get your hands on a bottle (or two, maybe more), visit The Random Whine at TheRandomWhine.com.

Can you tell us more about your song “Freedom”? What was the inspiration behind it?

Mental Health Advocate, Singer and Songwriter Written By: Nadia Worsley Keri Nicole, a native Washingtonian, is an international recording artist and songwriter with Midtown Road Music. Her talents and advocacy don’t stop there. Keri Nicole is also a model, actress, domestic violence advocate, and motivational speaker. Keri uses her gifted talent to motivate, uplift, and educate others. Given her passion for human rights and mental health, Keri writes and performs music with a mission.

With the holidays approaching, what are some of your favorite songs to listen to? How have those songs played a part in your life as an artist? A few of my favorite songs to listen to during the winter holidays include “O Holy Night,” “Carol of the Bells,” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” I connect with these classics, because they represent faith, hope, unity, love, and salvation. These principles are recurring themes in my music that I refer to as music with a mission to uplift and inspire. You have become an advocate for mental health and self-care. What was that process like for you? We often hear that helping others starts with helping yourself and that as you help others you help yourself. My mental health and self-care advocacy began with those two premises. Several years ago, I was in an abusive relationship in which I suffered both physical and emotional abuse. Reaching out for help, joining domestic violence support groups, and receiving counseling set me on a path of healing, emotional freedom, and self-love that I was determined to empower others with who are similarly situated as I was. For me, it’s a matter of paying it forward and potentially saving lives—as I felt my life was saved by others who supported me during the darker days of my life. I strive, through mentoring, public speaking, and my music, to be a beacon of light for others.

I view “Freedom” as part of my human rights mission. Just before Juneteenth 2022, I was recording music with my producer Art The Great (ATG)—working on a fun, upbeat Pop song—and suddenly I turned to ATG and said, “I want to record a more inspirational song that serves as a call to action for freedom.” When ATG sent me the track he wrote a short time later, the words and melodies to “Freedom” flowed through me so freely. It was truly a labor of love. Then when my team—ATG and my manager—suggested that hip hop artist and humanitarian DELLASIE (who’s in Ghana, West Africa) do the second verse of the song, and she stated that the track and my message inspired her to effortlessly write her lyrics, I knew this song was bigger than any one of us individually. I felt we, as creatives, had been called to create what many have dubbed a human rights anthem for freedom. I hope this song will help people from all over the globe understand that freedom is a basic human right and one of the most important that we can’t take for granted. We must work together to protect freedom for all–whether it’s free speech, freedom of religion, the right to vote, or even the freedom to love.

Your song “Freedom” was chosen for the Morehouse College Human Rights Film Festival. What was that experience like? Having “Freedom” selected as the official theme song for the 4th Annual Morehouse College Human Rights Film Festival stands as one of the greatest honors and highlights of my career—as it aligns my music with so much that I’m passionate about: human rights, higher education, HBCUs, creativity, the arts, justice, as well as personal and community empowerment. The outpouring of support— from the festival organizers, presenters, attendees, my background vocalists from the Youth Ensemble of Atlanta, those who heard about “Freedom” from festival marketing, and members of the Morehouse College community— has been deeply moving to me and something that I’ll greatly appreciate for a lifetime. We know healing is a deep process. What’s your outlet for dealing with anything that affects you emotionally? Over time, I’ve developed an emotional health toolkit that includes my go-to tools for achieving emotional balance and well-being. My toolkit includes prayer, meditation, daily expressions of gratitude, getting proper sleep, exercising regularly, surrounding myself and staying connected with positive people, talking to trusted counselors, and doing things I enjoy like creating and listening to good, life-giving music. How do you find balance between motherhood and your music career? Motherhood and my music career represent two tremendous loves in my life that I balance through my devout faith in a Higher Power; effective time management; reliance upon my village that includes family, close friends, and my supportive artist management team (ASP Management); and grace that I extend to myself and others. Sometimes, it can be a delicate balancing act, but I found that it works well for me. What upcoming projects do you have? Right now, I’m working with my producer Art The Great and label Midtown Road Music on my EP— titled “The Real Keri Nicole”—that will be released in early 2023. “Freedom” is the first single that will appear on the EP. My current single, “It’s a New Me,” is the second song on this collection. Overall, the EP will send messages to listeners about human rights, self-love, self-empowerment, and selfactualization. Putting in the work to become the best version of yourself and live your best life is good for you, your immediate community, and our global community. As the holiday season approaches, what fun activities or family traditions do you have?

The winter holiday season is one the favorite times of year for me and my family. It’s the season of gratitude and giving; so, we approach it with appreciation, love, and cheer and do things such as donating clothes and toys, participating in family game night, listening to holiday music, and preparing and enjoying holiday meals Her debut album, "The Real Keri Nicole," genuinely represents healing, with family. self-understanding, and living intentionally is set to launch December

2022.

JANELLE JONES Money Management Talk with Brand Consultant Janelle Jones Written By: Shea McGee

Janelle Jones is a brand consultant and marketing expert with the added title of author as well. She is incredibly talented in the realm of marketing and knowing what works for brands and their voice, making sure that they are building an audience that sticks with them. As a best-selling author, digital expert, and major brand maven, it’s no wonder that she loves to travel and does so with her children in tow who learn while abroad. Not only does Jones give tips to companies regarding their marketing, she also knows how to make your money work for you and keep to your budget this holiday season.

FEMI Magazine: What interests you about branding and consulting others with their brands and businesses? Jones: I started noticing other brands and was not too fond of their branding and marketing. I wanted to know why everything was not cohesive. I believe in a holistic style of marketing and branding, where everything matches. People can tell what your brand is, what your brand colors are, what type of feeling they're supposed to feel from your brand, and when they experience your marketing, they share the same level. They have the same level of experience on your YouTube that they do on your Instagram account on LinkedIn and Facebook. All high levels of luxurious marketing and branding. FM: With the holidays coming up very soon here, we all know how much money can go to ensure all loved ones get what they want or need. How can consumers be savvy about their finances while ensuring everyone gets something? Jones: Consumers can be savvy about their finances if they start with a budget. So this means that you don't use money that you don't already have. You know what you bring into your household every month. You know what you spend every month. So make a budget around your excess money after you've saved some money. After you come up with your budget, make a list of desired purchases. A list will ensure that you stay on budget. Saying on budget ensures you're not putting any of these purchases on a credit card. You will take that money and bargain shop. My second tip is that I love to buy things for my family. I can shop, so most of my holiday shopping is done on Black Friday. So I purchase most of my Christmas presents and winter wardrobe during Black Friday because that's when the sales are the best. Another tip is to keep everything as minimalist as possible. And make sure that you don't buy anything you don't need. Of course, treat yourself to an item or two, but nothing in excess. FEMI MAGAZINE | 15

FM: Is there a surefire way someone can cut costs on holiday items or decorations? Especially if they're DIY'ers? Jones: I love to check the clearance racks. Target, Walmart, Michaels, and all major box retailers have clearance sections. Check the clearance sections and put together items. Check Facebook Marketplace for things people don't want anymore. Black Friday will be the way to go for holiday supplies. Then I like to do it the day after Christmas when everybody returns their items. I buy Christmas decorations anywhere from one to three days after Christmas. You will be able to get the cheapest items for the holidays. You'll get the most supplies within those three days because, after three days, most people have bought everything. FM: As a mother, how have you navigated traveling and having your kids learn while abroad? Jones: As a mother, traveling abroad is tricky and fun at the same time. So my first thing when taking a trip is to be mindful of my mindset. So I don't give myself false expectations. I don't put terrible expectations on my children. And I allow myself to have grace and a lot of wiggle room regarding emotions and time. That means I don't get upset if my child throws a fit in the middle of the airport. I smile and apologize to everyone around us. My child has been traveling all day. They're tired, and taking a trip is outside their regular schedule, so I give my child and myself grace. So when I'm traveling, I don't schedule things close together. If I'm flying out that day, I don't have any appointments booked for two or three days after I get to my destination. That gives me time to unwind, to unpack, and get my children settled. I find childcare and do the things I need to do to ensure we're in a flow before I have to take any calls. I typically don't take any calls until I know they're going to be asleep, or if I know that I'm going to be at the same time zone that they're taking a nap. If I'm flying to a different time zone, I don't risk it. When traveling, I give myself and the kids at least a two or three-day window, and then I set the expectations with the kids. I sit down and talk to them. I say something like we're going to be traveling next week. I expect you to be on your best behavior. Mommy understands that things are difficult. Please speak to me if you need any help with anything. If you're feeling upset if you're feeling anxious, let me know so we can handle it before it gets too bad. That way, they know that I'm there for them. I support them. And they know this will be an experience we're going through together. FM: How do you typically celebrate the holidays as a brand consultant always on the move, and do you try to save or have a splurge here and there? Jones: The holidays are a time when I'm with my children. So that means that I'm not really with people that are not outside family members—those who aren’t outside of my immediate family. I do have friends that I visit during the holidays, but for the most part, I'm with my children and we like to go to holiday destinations. So we are always trying to find somewhere new that we want to go. We pick the place in advance, and then we expect to either have the presents delivered and wrap them there or we will get them when we get back. A few times we’ve traveled right outside of the holiday, so either right before or right after Thanksgiving or Christmas. I have a splurge here or there that I don't typically buy for myself. It's terrible. I should do more of that. But I usually splurge on the kids, so they'll get a great gift. If the children want an oversized ticket item, they're typically going to get that, but I try to get myself some new clothes and things for the holidays. FM: What is one valuable tip or trick a company can use that will undoubtedly help their marketing if they're on a budget? Jones: My biggest tip when using social media is to batch-create posts with templates. So you get on sites like Creative Market and Etsy to buy a social media template. It comes with a bunch of different graphics and stuff, and you can customize it on sites like Canva and create those graphics and post and schedule them for the month. That will be the most prominent way to take something off your plate and do some marketing without spending much money. The templates can range anywhere from $10 and up. They are inexpensive. The sky’s the limit, and you can find something that matches your brand. FM: As a best-selling author, what is your favorite resource for businesses and entrepreneurs if they want to spend their money effectively on building their audience naturally? Jones: So I would say that your voice is your brand. If you want to build your audience, naturally start speaking. Start speaking on the podcasts, going live on your Facebook profile, going live on Instagram, and speaking everywhere you possibly can. All of these things are going to be ways that are going to be accessible for you to get some visibility and build your audience. If you have the money to spend, I highly suggest hiring somebody to take care of all of this. Hiring somebody to manage your PR is going to be lifechanging. So if you find the right person for you, hire somebody to get you on the podcast and get you in the magazine. The magazine articles hire somebody to reach out to these Facebook groups where they allow somebody to go live. I would hire somebody to do all those things for you. FM: What is your favorite country you've traveled to, and would you ever settle there? Jones: My favorite country is tough for me to pick. But if I had to pick one, I think I would choose Thailand, which I've been to so far. I love Southeast Asia because I feel at home since everyone is so welcoming, and it has a low cost of living. Mainly Thailand is a breath of fresh air. It's one of my goals to move out of the country so that I could settle down there. Thailand is on my short list of places I want to move to. I like to go to the parts that aren't well-known. Even though I loved Bangkok, I probably would not settle down in the city region of Bangkok. I would live somewhere where there are not a whole bunch of tourists. To live around expats would be nice, but not necessarily tourists. It would be great for me to move to Thailand.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS FOR 2023

RESOLUTIONS: THE STATE OR QUALITY OF BEING RESOLUTE; FIRM DETERMINATION. A FIRM DECISION TO DO SOMETHING. A COURSE OF ACTION DETERMINED OR DECIDED ON.

Written By: Keziah Preston

THE ROOT WORD OF RESOLUTION IS TO RESOLVE SO THIS YEAR WE WILL TAKE A NEW APPROACH TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE AND CONQUER !! THIS TIME WE WILL RESOLVE THE THINGS THAT MAKE US FEEL INCOMPLETE OR DISSATISFIED. STARTING OFF WITH A JOURNAL ENTRY, PERHAPS SOME OF YOU SHOULD ADD JOURNALING INTO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE IN ORDER TO RESOLVE YOUR ISSUES. UNLEARN WHAT YOU WERE TAUGHT ABOUT JOURNALING AND RELEARN THAT WRITING THINGS DOWN ARE VERY POWERFUL. WORDS CAST SPELLS THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED SPELLING, SO BE MINDFUL OF WHAT YOU WRITE AND HOW YOU WRITE IT !! IF YOU NORMALLY SAY SOMETHING LIKE ‘’MY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS IS TO LOSE WEIGHT” REWORD IT WITH THE RESOLUTION, EXAMPLE: “I LOVE AND EMBRACE MY BODY BUT THERE'S ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENTS SO IM DEDICATED TO EATING MORE BALANCED AND DOING THE EXERCISES/WORKOUTS THAT WORK BEST FOR ME” IF YOUR RESOLUTION IS TO EAT OUT LESS AND YOU SAY “THIS YEAR I WILL EAT OUT LESS” REWORD IT TO “I AM OPEN TO LEARNING TO NEW RECIPES AND COOKING HACKS SO I CAN EAT AND ENJOY MORE HOME COOKED MEALS.” MOST IMPORTANTLY, WHATEVER IT IS THAT YOU WANT IN LIFE KNOW THAT YOU HAVE TO GIVE WHAT YOU’RE INTERESTED IN GETTING. WRITING YOUR RESOLUTIONS AS THE RESOLUTION AND NOT THE PROBLEM INCREASES YOUR CHANCES OF SUCCEEDING. SOME OF YOU NEED TO SPEND SOME ALONE TIME WITH YOURSELF AND REEVALUATE YOUR GOALS AND PLANS. ASK YOURSELF WHAT SMALL STEP CAN YOU TAKE RIGHT NOW TO RESOLVE AN ISSUE. I WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO ACCEPT THE RESOLUTION CHALLENGE WITH A NEW UNDERSTANDING THAT WE ARE ALL CONNECTED AND RESOLVING ISSUES FOR OTHERS IS RESOLVING ISSUES FOR US ALL. WHEN YOU’RE MINDFUL AND EVERYTHING YOU DO IS WITH SET INTENTIONS IMAGE THE CHANGES YOU CAN BRING. EVERYTIME YOU OPEN A DAY AFFIRM “DOORS ARE OPENING FOR MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS THAT NEED A WAY OUT”. WHEN YOU COOK/PREPARE YOUR FOOD SET INTENTIONS AS YOU SEASON FOOD, SPRINKLE SHELTER FOR THE HOMELESS, SPRINKLE PROTECTION FOR THE NON PROTECTED, SPRINKLE HEALTH FOR THE ILL, SPRINKLE WEALTH FOR THE POOR, SPRINKLE KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM FOR THE LOST. BACK TO YOU NOW, BECAUSE ITS OKAY TO BE SELFISH SOMETIMES, YOU HAVE TO BE A YOUR OWN BIGGEST FAN AND SUPPORTER. HERE WE’LL TALK ABOUT WHAT RESOLUTION IS BEST FOR YOU BASED ON YOUR ZODIAC:

LIBRA: RECLAMATION OF YOUR PERSONAL POWER AND REDEFINING YOUR OWN DREAMS. NURTURING YOUR ROOT CHAKRA AND EMBRACING THE SECURITY AND STABILITY IT STANDS FOR. SCORPIO: ACTIVATING YOUR THROAT CHAKA TO SAY THE THINGS LEFT UNSAID. YES SOMETIMES IT’S BETTER TO JUST BE QUIET HOWEVER HOLDING IN YOUR TRUTHS IS TOXIC, EVEN IF PEOPLE DON’T LIKE WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY THEY PROBABLY NEED TO HEAR IT ANYWAYS SAGITTARIUS: TAKING ACTION !! YOU ARE SO MUCH MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE AND ALLOWING AND EMBRACING YOUR SOLAR PLEXUS ENERGY WILL HELP STOP THE PROCRASTINATION. CAPRICORN: GIVE UP SOMETHING YOU ARE NOT, RELEASE THE THOUGHTS AND BELIEFS THAT WERE TOLD TO YOU ABOUT WHO AND WHAT YOU ARE AQUARIUS: CREATE, TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF ALL YOUR CREATIVE ENERGY. LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR CROWN CHAKRA AND HOW IT CAN BENEFIT YOU AND YOUR LIFE PISCES: EMBRACE JOY, RELEASE THE BELIEF YOU HAVE TO BE BUSY AND OR WORKING ALL THE TIME TO GET THE THINGS YOU WANT, LESS WORKING AND MORE ALIGNING.

ARIES: GOING WHERE YOU ARE LEAD AND BEING MORE ADAPTABLE. THIS MAY ALSO BE A TIME FOR YOU TO SURRENDER OLD BELIEFS PERTAINING TO YOUR SACRAL CHAKRA. TAURUS: TRUST YOUR INSTINCT, STOP THE SELF DOUBT AND SELF SABOTAGE AND LET GO OF THINGS AND PEOPLE THAT YOU KNOW AREN’T GOOD FOR YOU. GET A NEW UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR CROWN CHAKRA AND HOW IT ADDS OR TAKES AWAY FROM YOUR LIFE GEMINI: RELEASE CONTROL AND GO WITH THE FLOW. ASK, BELIEVE AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE. FOCUS MORE ON YOUR SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA CANCER: RELEASE GUILT, STOP DOING FOR OTHERS WHAT THEY CAN DO FOR THEMSELVES. IF YOUR ENERGY IS CURRENCY, ARE YOU SPENDING IT WISELY LEO: REMAIN UNATTACHED FROM OUTCOMES, IT WILL HAPPEN HOWEVER ITS SUPPOSE TO AND DON'T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF. FOCUS MORE ON THE HEALTH OF YOUR ROOT CHAKRA VIRGO: ISOLATION WILL HELP YOU FOCUS, YOU CAN BETTER COMPLETE THE JOB OR ASSIGNMENT IF YOU ARE ALONE AND DISTRACTION FREE.

Rob Fortune: “Financially Fearless”

R

Written by Tyrane Hughes

ob Fortune is the man with a plan, a financial plan to be exact. A lot came to mind after conducting the interview with Mr. Fortune. Actually the first thing that I noticed was his name, Fortune. The word fortune is partly defined as- (1) a: a very large sum of money, b: RICHES, WEALTH, c: a store of material possessions…you’re probably seeing where this is headed by now.

Which is why I chose to start off this article the way I did. Speaking of chose, was it predestined that Mr. Fortune was chosen to do what he does? Which is also another part of the definition of the word fortune, i.e. the word destiny. Now, I am not knocking anyone who does, but I don’t believe in luck. I believe in a Higher power. I promise you I am not rambling, these are just the thoughts that come to mind. Stay with me, and you’ll see the method to what seems to be my madness. You’ll also see that Mr. Fortune has been in finance a long time, he has gained an ample amount of experience to back up what he has to say. He is financially fearless, and tackles the financial dealings and issues of our communities the Fortune way, all while leading the way to fortune.

He truly wants to help empower our people, especially our youth. And why not, they are our future leaders, builders, and so forth. Mr. Fortune appears to be walking in his purpose. You can see for yourself why I was so impressed in such a short period of time.

FEMI STAFF (Tyrane Hughes): “Please, tell us about yourself.” Rob Fortune: “My name is Robert Fortune. I am the son of 2 Haitian immigrant parents… Grew up and have lived in Brooklyn my entire life. I run an investment advisory firm, ‘Fortune Advisory’, that I started in 2017 after 12 years of working for some of the top investment banks. My primary focus is on building a financial literacy platform for our community. Unfortunately, we have lacked access to information and capital for centuries.” FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “What sparked your interest in Finance?” Rob Fortune: “In 2006 when I took my first finance position at JP Morgan Chase, I was introduced to how money actually works and moves in our economy. It was a Sales position, but with every client I helped, I learned more about how I could help create opportunities for financial freedom. If they really wanted it, it was available. That snowballed into me learning about insurance, investments, home ownership, and other financial products. After getting an insider's perspective into how your money can work for you, I knew I wanted to do this long-term.”

FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “You have a variety of services that match your financial expertise. You have strategic goal setting, debt reduction and budget creation/planning, wealth building with a longterm approach, and the list goes on and on. Can you elaborate on your services for our readers?” Rob Fortune: “Every service I offer is part of creating a financial plan within what we call your "personal economy." At every stage of your life, there is a focus you should be paying attention to. When you work with me, I become part of your family. We create a plan for you based on what your dream of financial freedom looks like. We help you achieve those goals not only on paper, but we apply your plan to your real life. Money is not one size fits all, but we can make what you have work for you. We start creating a true budget so we can know how your money moves around you. Once we have an idea of that, we can see what changes need to be made. One of the major first steps is analyzing your income and how you utilize the dollars you traded your time for. Then we begin to invest for growth, get insurance protection, and pay off debts to maintain creditworthiness. You can start anywhere you feel is most important, but everything ties into each other, and no steps should be ignored.”

FEMI MAGAZINE | 22

FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “Things have been getting better in our communities when it comes to financial education and resources, thanks to people such as yourself. However, we all know the disadvantages that our people have when it comes to those very subjects (not all, but far too many). The lack of awareness for many reasons, and so on. A very broad subject, as you know…Can you share your insight on the importance of financial literacy in our communities?” Rob Fortune: “Regarding money, we have a distinct issue of fear in our community. Fear of taking risks or doing something too outside of the box. A lot of that fear comes from a lack of knowledge and not wanting to lose what we are finally able to gain. When we continuously expose ourselves to different financial experiences and gain more access, I think that fear will decline. My job is to help guide you through those experiences and piece together something that is sustainable but progressive for you and your family.”

FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “You have been in the field of Finance for almost two decades. Your clients range from the ages of 8 and 81. What is your favorite moment or two from helping so many people accomplish financial freedom?” Rob Fortune: “I have a client that I considered great with money before working with them. They were doing great in setting their children up for success in the future, but they had zero dollars for college savings. Through my advice and structure, we quickly created a college fund for his children that didn't disrupt the flow of money utilized for other things in his household. We teach you how to save and plan without being restricted. Another aspect of finance that I love is the life insurance space. In our community, life insurance is just to cover things when a person passes, it's so much more than that. There is so much miseducation in how much life insurance can be an asset and tool to us while we live. I have been able to set up several clients with plans that essentially create their own banking system with dollars they can loan themselves while still earning interest in those dollars. It’s empowering because they do not need to rely on others for funding for whatever they want to accomplish”.

FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “The holidays are approaching. What advice do you have for those who may struggle with budgeting around the holidays?” Rob Fortune: “Stay true to your goals. Don’t fall for trying to impress others. Create a budget for what you need to get and stick to it. Many times we spend for the act, not for the need. Ask yourself if it is necessary. How far back will it set me from that goal? That dream? Be accountable. Speak to your loved ones about what you’re trying to accomplish, and they should support you.” FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “What would you like to see come to fruition from all of your hard work and dedication in your field?” Rob Fortune: “I always say if I can change the community's financial literacy by 5%, I will feel accomplished in my endeavor. But more so, I’m trying to create a platform where I can empower young people of color to feel they can run a finance company without having to go to other firms first. I want our people to understand that we can build and have our own banks. Understand we can leave our families' assets that put them in a better position while leveraging those same assets to truly enjoy our lives while living. It will take time, but anything worth having is worth working for.” I don’t know about you, but Robert (Rob) Fortune has my vote of confidence. However Mr. Fortune’s name came to be, from that time on, he began to move towards the greatness that could be in his life, and it became an even bigger purpose when he chose to share the wealth. He’s sowing seeds of financial empowerment. I’m excited to see what he does next. Connect with Rob Fortune: Instagram: @Fortune_Advisory

ABA ARTHUR: “PLAYING IN HER DREAMS!” Written By: Tyrane Hughes Aba is a Ghanaian American actor, who has appeared in several notable plays, including ‘For Colored Girls,’ as well as her original one woman show, ‘Landing in Love.’ Currently, you can find her on the popular ABC series, ‘Queen.’ We will also have the joy of seeing her appear in the upcoming Black Panther II movie, and take part as cast for Oprah Winfrey’s ‘The Color Purple’ (due to release in 2023). Growing up, most of us have used our imagination to bring different versions of our world to life. Role playing as characters, heroes, and other people and things that we wanted to be growing up. Some of us did it for fun, to step into these roles that made us feel happy, brave, and/or beautiful. But there are those of us who would play these roles with a different feeling inside of us. A passion, before ever knowing what being passionate about something even was to begin with. Aba Arthur is a member of that tribe. She has always wanted to be the creative artist that she is now. Telling stories, teaching, and entertaining, has always been Aba's dream. She put it beautifully, by saying,“I get to play in my dreams for a living!” That touched me. I have always wanted to be a writer, growing up watching ‘Superman’, my focus was mostly on Lois. I was amazed by his power and heroics, but to work for a newspaper…wow. So it makes me happy to see a sister not only following her dreams, but playing in them. That puts a deeper meaning to it. Can you envision that little girl watching television, watching movies, and daydreaming herself into character? I can. It was a pleasure to get inside the mind of Aba, or shall I say the dreams of Aba…and see a quick glimpse of what the world looks like to her.

FEMI STAFF (Tyrane Hughes): “Please, tell our readers about yourself.” Aba Arthur: “ Yes! I am an Aries. I love blueberry donuts, and I am an actress, which means I get to play in my dreams for a living! I am a lover of all creative arts. So in my spare time, I am either writing, listening to new music, or watching something beautiful someone else has created.” FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “When did you know that you wanted to be an actress?” Aba Arthur: “I have really always known…I just did not know what it was called for a while. Being able to create, and tell stories that teach and entertain has always been my dream.” FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “I started following you on Instagram, and the first thing that I noticed aside from all of the flawless pictures, was how family oriented you are. How exciting has it been for you and your family with all of your success?” Aba Arthur: “Oh that is so kind! Thank you. Yes, they are just beside themselves. I am so grateful for the support.”

FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “You’re welcome!...Speaking of family, the holidays are right around the corner. What are you looking forward to most this season?” Aba Arthur: “GOING TO GHANAAAAAA!!! I will spend the holidays in Ghana to return with a brighter smile, and more glowing skin. You should come!” FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “That is awesome!!! I have always wanted to go to Africa!...You recently had a cameo on the new ABC series ‘Queens’. How was that experience?” Aba Arthur: “It was truly a dream. The crew was professional and kind. The Director was clear and attentive. As a lifelong fan of both Brandy and Remy Ma, I was very nervous to meet them! They were both so lovely! It was really an incredible experience, and I am so grateful to them for it.” FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “You are also set to appear in the Marvel film ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, as well as Oprah Winfrey’s ‘The Color Purple’. That’s a big deal. Tell us about that. How has it been preparing mentally for these roles?” Aba Arthur: “Wow…indeed! I take a lot of deep breaths throughout the day! I wake up with yoga, so I can stay centered. I stay grateful…Being around the greats like, Oprah Winfrey, Ryan Coogler, Blitz Bazawule - all you can do is watch, and learn.” FEMI STAFF (Ty Hughes): “You have been making your rounds, and have been doing some really exciting things on your journey of pursuing your dreams. What’s next for Aba Arthur?” Aba Arthur: “Yes! Coming up soon, I will recur on a TV Series titled, ‘Bad Monkey’ starring Vince Vaughn. I also have a film titled, ‘Freedom Hair’ that just wrapped. I am always reading scripts to see what fits, and creating. All in all…I am just getting started.” Just getting started is correct. I saw Aba had started yet another role, before this article could be released. She may be playing the part, but she definitely isn’t playing any games. She is after everything that she has ever dreamed of, and it’s beautiful and awesome to see. So many can learn from her, how she put a lasso around her dreams, and brought them straight to her reality. I am looking forward to seeing what she conquers next. The Holidays are approaching and many will possibly go into large debt for gifting. What advice do you have for those who plan to spend big? If you want to spend big for the holidays, then save for it in advance. Do not go into credit card debt for the holidays! Make a list of what you want to buy and stick to it. Determine the amount of money that you want to spend and do not go over that amount. Try to pay in cash if you can, when the cash is gone, you are done spending. What made you follow the career path of financing and how has it helped you in your everyday life? When the housing market crashed in 2008 and there were so many that were losing their homes to foreclosure and struggling with credit card debt, I was asked to write articles on homebuying and paying off credit card debt, I then started writing as a contributor for Black Enterprise, went on to CNBC and then Forbes and now I’m at Business Insider. I have learned so much about money and investing and credit being a financial journalist and I really do apply it to my everyday life. It also helps me understand why people, especially Black people, have trouble with money. There are a number of money lessons that we just were not taught. Having good credit is a goal for so many, in what ways can one boost their credit score and what is a good debt ratio for credit cards? Having good credit is really important, especially now. The best way to improve your credit is to pay your bills on time, every month without fail. Just one missed payment can drop your credit score as much as 100 points. So paying your bills on time is key. Also, with credit card balances, if you are going to carry a balance, aim for 30% credit utilization or less and then work over time to get the utilization down to 10% which is best for raising your score. How do you break the habit of spending your last when some feel they are just barely breaking even with bills and household expenses? The best way to break the habit of spending your last is to build a habit of saving. Whenever you receive money/income, save whatever you can. Even if it’s $5.00. Once you get in the habit of saving, then you won’t be in the position of spending your last because you will have money saved. Even if you think you are barely breaking even with bills and household expenses, save $5.00 each payday, look into getting a side hustle. Once you get in the habit of saving and see the money start growing, you will want to do it all the time. Many are renting homes more now than considering buying a home. Do you feel the market for buyers is in a good place right now? Buyers in today’s housing market will have to make sure that they are in an optimal financial position to buy right now, and credit will play a big part in that situation. Potential buyers with the best credit scores will get the lowest interest rates. What resources do you offer for those looking to work with you and meet their financial goals?

EBONEE CLARK AND JAMEELAH WATKINS DESIGNING THE FUTURE WITH LAUREN WESLEY DESIGNS Written By: Yakira Muhammad

Ebonee Clark and Jameelah Watkins co-founders of Lauren Wesley Designs, an Atlanta, GA-based interior design and event planning company committed to curating atmospheres and experiences for every area of life. Additionally, Ebonee and Jameelah were featured in HGTV’s “Married to Real Estate”, as the official design team. Lauren Wesley Designs puts a huge emphasis on how the environment affects mental health and well-being. They take time to create environments that are tailored specifically to each client, taking into consideration the mood and vibe that colors, shapes, and textures can evoke. Let’s start with how you both got into interior designing and event planning. In early 2017, Jameelah’s cousin’s wedding planner bailed on her weeks before her big day. Jameelah quickly stepped into the planning role and I was asked to assist with tale arrangements. Long story short, the wedding turned out beautiful and the three of us, Jameelah, Rachel (Jameelah’s Cousin), and myself came up with an idea to launch an event design and planning company. Due to conflicting schedules and a big move, Rel relocated with her new husband while Jameelah and I moved forward as J. Divine Events. After a successful run on the Atlanta event circuit, we began throwing around the idea of doing interior design. Jameelah had recently purchased and designed a condo and I had just helped my in-laws rebuild their Mississippi home after an unfortunate house fire. Working with the contractors and picking paint colors was truly invigorating. Ironically enough we landed our first interior design project towards the end of 2019. After the success of the project, we were hooked. Once COVID hit in 2020 and no events were on the horizon, we naturally pivoted into interior design, and we haven’t looked back since. Why did you decide to create your own company Lauren Wesley Designs? After we added interiors to our repertoire, we decided it was time for a name change. J divine Event became Lauren Wesley Events, a name birthed from our children. My daughter’s middle name is Lauren and Jameelah’s son’s middle name is Wesley. Together with the new company Lauren Wesley Interiors, Lauren Wesley Design emerged. How did it feel being featured in HGTV’s “Married to Real Estate” as the official design team?

What is your personal mission/goal you both live by? Always follow and trust your gut. God has given us the power of discernment and we believe that every time we trust our instinct, we can never go wrong. What tips would you give aspiring interior designers who don’t know how to enter the industry? Don't be afraid to invest in yourself. Going into this business, we didn't shy away from educating ourselves, hiring mentors, and paying for the proper resources and tools. Also, know that things may not happen overnight so trust yourself and the process. What are some great budget-friendly decorating tips for the Holidays? You can never go wrong with seasonal pillow covers. Instead of buying a traditional pillow, try buying pillow inserts and pillow covers that are sold separately. The overs can easily be changed from season to season. Also, try a beautiful wreath on the front door or a holiday-inspired tablescape for the dining room table. That can always be a very elegant vignette. How do you plan to spend the Holidays this year? We’ll split our time between Atlanta and Mississippi celebrating with family. I, (Ebonee) am originally from Mississippi and Jameelah will be hosting her family in the city. What are your plans for the upcoming New Year? We’ll be completing filming season 2 of Married to Real Estate and working on launching new digital and physical products. As our brand grows, we decided to launch a new YouTube series to introduce individuals to the behind-the-scenes process of what we do. Launching a YouTube series will show viewers a true look and behind-the-scenes into who Lauren Wesley Designs is.

It has definitely been a wonderful experience and has challenged us to execute much swifter. We typically take a few months to a year to complete a renovation. For these families, it’s a few weeks to a few months! I read that your company puts a huge emphasis on how environment can affect well-being and mental health. How does your company address that? We are big on not only creating beautiful spaces but empowering our clients to live well and prioritize what makes them feel alive. Our faith ground our daily lives so when we step into the homes of our clients, we make it our mission to create spaces that lift their spirits so they can celebrate memorably, relax stylishly and live abundantly.

HOROSCOPE OCTOBER 25 - NOVEMBER 7 WRITTEN BY: KEZIAH PRESTON Our New Moon in Scorpio October 25 2022 brings us all a rebirth, think of this phase or cycle being called “THE PHOENIX.” This new moon energy is all about the Birth, Death, and Rebirth, so no matter what you're going through right now, a new start is coming. This transformation is a deep one, it may lead you to crying, kicking and screaming, door slamming, and maybe even knocking some things over. However just like the cocoon may not be a beauty to watch but the butterfly that emerges definitely is. So Expect all real and raw energy and realities, nothing Superficial about this cycle !! Don’t Panic though, if it’s storming right now know that better and brighter days are coming, as these cycles and phases change so do our circumstances. I recommend you use some of this time to journal for shadow work shedding light on your dark side. These transformations may be dramatic and karmik, but it’s all a learning experience. You can repeat this cycle again or you can dig deep to reveal to heal so you can let go and grow !! This is your leaves turning from green to brown and some of them falling from the branches. Let them fall, they can’t go into the next season with you. Here are some journal prompts to help you conquer your shadow side: What makes you jealous, what is your first memory of being jealous, how did you handle it and how does it still bother you? What makes you obsessive, what do you obsess over and why, what was it that first made you possessive and how can you release that? Now we’ll get into each zodiac and how this moon phase may affect your sign.

Scorpio: For some of you, nothing is yet set in stone, this is mutable energy so expect changes. If there's a situation that you're unsure about you can make changes to it to change the outcome. Some of You may feel parts of you are under construction or perhaps some part of you should be under construction. You have the power in your hands and as the water your sign is, imagine you holding water in your hands, is it staying stuck or is it flowing through ? Visualize yourself getting everything you want, incorporating the universal laws into our daily routines. Now is also a good time for some of you to write a list of your wants, needs and disease and or create a vision board. Be more active and less lazy, be more adaptable and flexible, don't chase money, follow your dreams and the money will come. Aquarius: This is your Public Service Announcement to always speak your truth but speak it calmly. Remember how important it is to communicate and be accepting that some people can only meet you as far as they have met themselves. Florence Scovel Shinn once said “your word is your wand” so be mindful of the words you speak because they are powerful. For some of you a certain situation that has or about to come to fruition, just laughing it off would be the best way to handle it. For some of you, your lack of attention has you missing out on things, but its up to you to continue to ignore them or not, this may be the same person that's always at your favorite coffee shop flirting but you're not paying enough attention to notice. However if you’re taking this time to regroup and evaluate what you have learned then you should also think about sharing your experiences because someone needs to hear what you have to say. Gemini: You’ve experienced many things you didn't like so now you're making it your business to learn and experience things you do like and you definitely deserve it !! Its okay to have more fun, don’t feel guilty about it. Someone is watching you, this could be for a raise or promotion, a collaboration, partnership, friendship or relationship. If you have been working towards a new life for your children then this is your confirmation the work is paying off. For some of you doors that you thought were closed to you in the past will open back to you. Get and Stay on track, release control, let all things unfold, know that what is yours will not pass you by. Incorporating some meditation and yoga to your daily or weekly routines will definitely contribute to your relaxation and peace. Some of you need to forgive yourself and others to release that burden that you are carrying around with you.

FEMI MAGAZINE | 34

Libra: Some of you really need to stop second-guessing yourself, this is your reminder that your mind believes what you tell it so tell it how great and amazing you are !! Your thoughts affect your reality so if you're worrying then you will only attract more things to worry about. Some of you this is your time to find your balance, you're too often too much of one emotion not enough of the others, too much in your head or sacred parts and not enough in your heart, to much in your flesh and not enough in your soul. Pay attention to details, what adds to and or takes away from your balance and stability, what really triggers your imbalances and what are ways you think you can heal from them and let them go. Some of you need to practice saying yes to yourself so you can get use to hearing it, YES YES YES !!! Some of you need to stop being so stubborn, it's make or break time and it's time to forgive someone. Some of you need to prepare for wish fulfillment, you asked for something and you are definitely about to get exactly what you asked for !!!

Sagittarius: It is okay to be sensitive towards other people's emotions, it's okay to remain on their team and not jump to the defensive side when a play doesn't go your way. Take this time to explore your divine feminine energy, what makes your divine feminie feel at her best and what makes her feel at her worst ? This cycle is definitely your friendly reminder to be prepared for an explosion of feelings and emotions. How will you control them, how will you conquer them, or will you let them win and repeat this cycle again ? For some of you a review of your dreams, goals and intentions to reach them needs to be done. Stay focused, don’t let anyone or anything distract you. Practice more good health habits consistently and beware that one fast move will blow a fuse so be mindful of your actions and reactions. Leo: Now is the time for some of you to ask yourself, have you been too selfish lately? Have you been going back and forth with your wants and and their wants not wanting to settle or compromise, don’t force it !! Ask yourself are you handling this situation with the needed sensitivity, if you created this situation you can create your way out of it. Don't be a baby about it, just meditate your way through it and be more open to having more fun. Pisces: If you have been looking for a positive sign, this is probably it !! If you havent been looking for a sign then just ignore this. However this is your friendly reminder that you can create your own reality. Energies and Emotions are Rising Up and it's up to you how to use or transmute these. Will you use them for your highest and greatest good or will you allow it to be used for low vibrations? You are on the right track though, if you were unsure about it you are headed in the right direction. Make sure you are staying in alignment, if anyone or anything makes you feel like it's getting you off track then release it and let them go. Keep pushing forward because this situation is full of potential

Virgo: This is your once in a Blue Moon opportunity, your rare chance is here or approaching, know trust and believe luck is on your side. If you're feeling unlucky then manifest, meditate and affirm yourself out of that energy. This is your reminder to keep the faith and don't give up on your dreams, believe they will come true and they will. Some of you need to accept and respect that your words are powerful and come to a new understanding that many of your situations were and are because you spoke of them. Be mindful of the way you speak over you, your family and your life. Speak more of the things you want and less of the things you don’t want, altering your reality with the power of your words. Cancer: Many of you are making progress even if it doesn’t feel like it, you’re not feeling or seeing the progression but those around you notice. Now is definitely not the time to give up on any of your endeavors, if you’re tired you can rest but don’t quit. Some of you could be more independent at this time, some things would be better done solo. Some of you have some things from the past you need to let go, there really isn't room here for it and where you’re going is even less room for the past. Don’t let this be a missed opportunity for a better future due to attachments to the past. This could be a great time for you to focus more on detachment which is a solar plexus preventing you from letting go of something or someone. Attachment is a low vibrational coping mechanism that can be healed from. Time for you to Think outside the box. Capricorn: This is a time for many of you to Reevaluate where you are right now and where you’re going. Are you saying and doing all the things that’s getting you closer or moving you away from your goals. Focus more on clean eating, some of you may be suffering from some cold symptoms due to lack of immune system care. It’s also recommedned for some of you to add alternative therapies to your daily and nightly routines. Some of you just need to recommit to your healthy habits you were already doing. If you have been wondering if a person is reliable or not, they are so don’t be overly critical. Pay more attention to yourself and shift your mind when you find yourself over analyzing. Aries: This just might be your sign to release and cleanse from some karmic debt. If you have been thinking about your past lives or hearing, reading or dreaming about past lives it isn’t a coincidence. Some of you may be in a karmic relationship that you have been in through many past lives, repeating the lesson until you pass and elevate from it. If this situation has become toxic and you know it but still can’t find your way to detach from it then you’ll have to dip deep within. The challenge for you may be because in past lives something shut down your solar plexus chakra causing you to carry it over and over again. However, say your way to elevate this is by pouring all your extra time and energy into your solar plexus chakra. How would you feel if instead of pouring from your cup into others you poured back into you consistently. Taurus: Some of you like a lot of people are being called to face their shadow self of attachment and detachment. The blockage in your solar plexus could very well have started from a childhood trauma. If at times while growing up your family or kids at school made you feel unworthy, undeserving, or less confident then now is the time to heal from those things. It's recommended you communicate with your inner child, reminding and assuring younger you that you are safe, worthy, deserving and have good reasons to be confident. If someone has been making you feel like they are keeping you at arms length then this is a person you need to detach from. This is your friendly reminder you are unique and special as an earth sign you are naturally grounded and people are often bothered by your sense of security. Your “I’m always good, even when I'm not good I'm still good” mentality intimidates some people. However don't get too caught in what others think or even what you think and forget to appreciate the beauty of life.

Coping WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE DURING THE Holidays The Holidays are always a tough time of the year for so many. If you have experienced the loss of a loved one it’s kind of hard to find that Holiday cheer that we all long for. You miss their favorite recipes whether it was grandma’s sweet potato pies, or grandpa’s fried Turkey, it just changes how that day is celebrated. We want to let you know that it’s absolutely no deadline on grieving and it’s okay to be sad. It’s okay to miss your loved ones and it’s okay to wish they were here to celebrate with you. One of the most comforting things you can do is prepare a dish that reminds you of them. You can also visit the cemetery with other family members and give homage to them and just talk to them and express how you feel. That helps aid in healing and giving you some form of peace. Never be afraid to talk to someone about how you are feeling even if it’s sharing about it on social media. Remember there is no wrong or right way to tell people how you are feeling. You will find that often on social media that someone else is feeling the same and may be able to offer comforting words. Take advantage of groups that are dedicated to those who have loss a loved one. Healing is always better with friends who understand. Depression is very real and do not hesitate to seek help if what you are feeling is too much to handle alone. 1 PETER 5:7 AMP “Casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].” Remember to seek God in prayer and know that he is a very present help in times of what feels like a storm in your life. You may feel alone but know that your ancestors are around you in spirit. Knowing this helps us to hold our head up and smile because that is what they would want you to do. They would not want you to be sad and not enjoy the Holidays. Make this season a memorable one that is filled with all the great things your loved one enjoyed around this time of the year.

What is the Employee Retention Credit (ERC)? ERC is a stimulus program designed to help those businesses that were able to retain their employees during the Covid-19 pandemic. Established by the CARES Act, it is a refundable tax credit – a grant, not a loan – that you can claim for your business. The ERC is available to both small and mid-sized businesses. It is based on qualified wages and healthcare paid to employees. • Up to $26,000 per employee •Available for 2020 and the first 3 quarters of 2021 •Qualify with decreased revenue or COVID event •No limit on funding ERC is a refundable tax credit! How much money can you get back? You can claim up to $5,000 per employee for 2020. For 2021, the credit can be up to $7,000 per employee per quarter! How do you know if your business is eligible? To qualify, your business must have been negatively impacted in either of the following ways: A government authority required partial or full shutdown of your business during 2020 or 2021. This includes your operations being limited by commerce, inability to travel or restrictions of group meetings. Gross receipt reduction criteria is different for 2020 and 2021, but is measured against the current quarter as compared to 2019 pre-COVID amounts. A business can be eligible for one quarter and not another. Initially, under the CARES Act of 2020, businesses were not able to qualify for the ERC if they had already received a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan. With new legislation in 2021, employers are now eligible for both programs. The ERC, though, cannot apply to the same wages as the ones for PPP.

DAWN MICHELLE HARDY FOUNDER OF THE LITERARY LOBBYIST BOOK PUBLICITY AND PUBLISHING CONSULTING AGENCY.

Written By: Keziah Preston

What an honor it is for us here at FEMI Magazine which consists of many writers, to have the opportunity to interview such a significant woman in our writers community. She advocates for storytellers, and others into writing, who want to express themselves to the world through their book. Along with her team together you will work to accomplish your goals as a writer and author. She knows that each writer is different so she takes the time to create a plan best for each individual. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Dawn Michelle Hardy and asking her a few questions. Take a look at what she shared with us. You are currently celebrating your 20th year in book publishing. What has this journey been like for you, and what has kept you going? Time flies when you are making an impact. Twenty years ago, I started as an assistant to a self-published author, and since then, I have impacted the writing careers of thousands of authors in their journey to releasing their first book independently, with a hybrid publisher, or the traditional route. It's been a roller coaster experience and I just keep getting back in line for another ride. What keeps me going is that I can choose my own path. I can be as creative as I want to be and I'm always meeting new writers who are teaching me on a variety of subjects and trusting me to champion their books. What would you say has been the hardships of starting your own book publicity and publishing consulting agency? How did you overcome those moments if any? The hardships I've experienced are some that many entrepreneurs experience, the learning curve of building and running your own business. The responsibility of bringing in new business, servicing those clients, hiring, and managing cash flow while still learning "on the job" have all been challenging. I didn't plan to start my business in 2004. It was my reaction to finding myself unexpectedly unemployed. The good thing for me is that I was very good at the last job I had so I used those skills to open the door and advocate for more writers of color to get their books to market.

The Holidays are just around the corner, any book recommendations from your company? Yes!! If you are looking for a children's book I would recommend Sunday Dinner by Angela Shante Johnson, The Genius of Egypt and Makeda: The Queen of Sheeba both by Marlon McKinney. For those who love dope novels by women of color consider the historical novel, The Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson and the romance novel Vanessa Jared's Got a Man by LaQuette. If you are looking for a nice gift book for your natural hair sister friend consider My Beautiful Black Hair: 101 Natural Hair Stories from the Sisterhood by St. Clair Detrick-Jules. I also suggest gifting someone The Lineage of Love by Shyah Dickerson, it's an ode to the ancestors, and giving this book to someone is a loving act in itself. And, if the man in your life loves sports as much as I do, check out these sports memoirs KG: A to Z: An Uncensored Encyclopedia of Life, Basketball, and Everything in Between by Kevin Garnett and Carmelo Anthony's memoir, Where Tomorrows Aren't Promised both of those are on my holiday break reading list. What's next for you in business? I'm preparing for launch campaigns for New Growth: The Art and Texture of Black Hair by Jasmine Cobb which publishes in December 2022, Dancing in the Darkness: Spiritual Lessons for Thriving in Turbulent Times by Otis Moss III coming out in January 2023 and Racial Justice at Work: Practical Solutions for Systematic Change by Mary-Frances Winters and The Winters Group Team on sale February 14, 2023. The first quarter is ripe with opportunities for black authors to promote their books during MLK weekend and through Black History month and Women's History month.

God's grace is how I have overcome the tough seasons. My heart is big and my ambitions are plenty. I lean on God because I know I don't have all the answers.

FEMI MAGAZINE | 39

What are your plans for the Holidays and the upcoming New Year? My holiday plans will be low-key but the perfect blend of the things I love. I'll do lots of yoga and spa treatments, and indulge in decadent food and cocktails with loved ones. The holiday is also when I get to read for leisure and begin planning my 2023 vacations. Bali, Mexico and Greece are up next. In 2023 I am continuing with the beta program for my speakers' bureau service. Many of my clients want paid speaking engagements after their book publicity campaign is complete. I started making connections specifically with HBCUs to bring them some of my most notable black authors. I'm working to get some of my first bookings for the first quarter of the new year. This is something that I am extremely passionate about and God is helping me find the '25th hour" in the day to get this service up and running at a level where it produces for my authors and my bottom line. Upon reflecting back on when you first entered the media industry, what would you do differently now? Truthfully I would have sought a mentor earlier on. At the time I started I didn't know how long I would want to work as a publicist. It was a trial. I am self-taught. I should've sought a mentor to help me navigate through the process of entrepreneurship as well as a mentor to help with learning and understanding strategic media relations. Organically I am very creative and a talker. I was a raw talent who thrived in producing grassroots campaigns. Professionally, I would've benefited from a mentor to help guide my ambitions. Is your company accepting any new submissions? I am always accepting new clients for publicity since books come out every week of the year. Publicity clients will automatically be considered for my beta speakers program. What advice do you have for new authors looking to secure a publishing deal? If you looking to secure a traditional publishing deal you must invest in a strong development editor to ensure that your idea is clear and the narrative is strong. Strong writing is the #1 way to win a literary agent over. The second way is having a strong platform. Whatever your book's subject matter is, begin discussing and writing about the topic in public forums, and digital and broadcast platforms early. You can do this even if you are writing a novel or memoir. Proving that you have established credibility and audience engagement will help make a case for why your book should be published traditionally.

COVER STORY

JADAKISS SPEAKS ON FAMILY LAUNCH OF COFFEE LINE, KISS CAFE Written By: Tanisha D. Davis

Jason Phillips, best known by his stage name Jadakiss, is a legendary rapper from New York. We all know him from the start of his career in the 1990s as a member of the rap trio The Lox. Outside of music, he and his family have teamed up to launch a coffee line which is said to have been 40 years in the making. Together with his father Bob Phillips and son Jaewon Phillips, they have launched Kiss Cafe. Kiss Café is a true labor of java love. More than a brand or a company, it represents three generations of heritage and history. We had a chance to catch up with Jadakiss and get the inside scoop about the business and products that coffee lovers around the world can get a taste of!

FEMI MAGAZINE [Tanisha Davis]: The Holidays are just around the corner, and family plays a great part in the season. How important has it been for you to create a legacy for your family? JADAKISS: Coming from where I come from, not a lot of us are given this type of opportunity – to build something with your father and your son. Growing up, my dad worked hard to take care of us. He’s done some incredible things in coffee. He’s achieved a lot with major brands, founded his own company. I’m proud of him for that. But, I think Kiss Cafe – a true family business – has always been a goal for him. He’s taught me a lot about the business. We shared a lot of stories and made a lot of memories through our love for coffee. He shared that with me and then we shared that with my son Jaewon. Here we are, ready to build a legacy. The idea to start your own coffee company has been 40 years in the making, what was the process like with getting this off the ground and running? We’re family. But, this is a business. And, we’re doing this the right way. Working together can be challenging. The highs and the lows are bound to happen. There are some days when we get after each other. Maybe we need to grab a camera and capture some of those crazy moments. It could make for good TV! Still, my father’s experience is unmatched. He’s established the network and the resources we need to be successful. And, Jaewon has worked closely with him the last few years – developing his own expertise in the space. We’ve got a great team behind-the-scenes in The Compound, with Lisa Goncalves and Set Free Richardson supporting our design and marketing. You combine this knowledge with our diversity across age and experience and education. We can’t lose!

You are a legend in the music industry, what made you venture off into the coffee industry? How was the idea first received by friends and family? I feel like my father has always wanted to create something with his family. But, this all came together after my first Verzuz battle. I had a lot to drink and a lot of people reached out to dad letting him know I needed some water. Maybe y’all can start a water line! He pushed back and said, “Why not coffee?” Then somebody made some knock-off t-shirts with my silhouette on them. We tried to take back the moment and actually created some coffee bag mock-ups. Then we decided to slow down. Make this count. Make this more than a quick brand. Make this a legacy. I love the name Kiss Cafe, and the fact that it is black owned by 3 generations of men in your family. What flavors of coffee can we expect to experience from your line?

Beijo’ (kiss in Portuguese), the company’s medium-dark roast Arabica blend sourced from Central America, is available now ($14.99 USD) in whole bean and ground options. Coffee casuals and connoisseurs can find the carefully curated product at brand’s website (KissCafeCoffee.com).

We launched with Beijo, which means kiss in Portuguese. It’s a its medium-dark roast Arabica blend sourced from Central America. But, that’s just the beginning. We plan to release more flavors from other regions around the world. They’ll all be called kiss, but in other languages. Coffee is such a universal delicacy, yet not everyday do we find a black owned coffee business. What sets your brand apart from the larger competitors? Coffee is a personal thing. Everyone drinks it differently. Two sugars. None. In the morning. At lunch. So, we’re all about being an enjoyable and accessible brand. We want Kiss Cafe to be like me, a coffee for everyone. What else can we expect from you in the upcoming months and into the New Year? We’re working on identifying the right retail and experiential partners. So, you’ll start to see us show up in new and interesting places. We’re looking at merch and accessories, like mugs. We may come out with some holiday gift boxes. And, we’ve got several other flavors and blends in the works too. Lots more to come.

LET‘S GET AWAY FOR A WINTER VACAY Written By: JaBraun McKenzie

It is the most wonderful time of the year when everyone is getting excited for the holiday season that has quickly crept upon us. After a long year of working hard & balancing family amidst career obligations we start to look forward to a much deserved, relaxing Winter break. Especially with us seemingly finally coming out of the woods of a long-fought pandemic.

Travel to New York City to Experience Radio City City Music Hall’s, Christmas Spectacular!

It's time to get back outside a bit while enjoying & exploring all that is out there to see on this wonderful planet that we get the privilege to live on called earth. After asking a few family & friends as well as using my own ideas of what the perfect winter family vacation would look like, I have compiled a list of a few of the dream destinations that are sure to be a hit and get you booking your flights, and making those hotel & resort reservations as soon as you get done reading. From those seeking the classically traditional winter wonderland to those wishing to escape the chilly temperatures for something warmer and exotic this list has something for everyone!

If you are anything like me, you grew up watching the television & seeing the Radio City Rockettes in New York City, the famous dance troupe that was founded in St. Louis has performed in New York since 1932 at the famed Radio City Music Hall. You might also love the tree lighting ceremony that takes place each year at Rockefeller Center.

Perhaps the big apple is surely the place you want to be during this winter traveling season. There is so much to see & do in this city such as take in a concert or event in Madison Square Garden, see a Broadway show which thankfully is open & back better than ever with such shows as MJ: the Musical & Holiday Spectaculars such as the Famed Nutcracker Ballet (beginning Nov. 25th) & A Christmas Carol (Nov.8th) (winner of 5 Tony Awards) to name a few. You may also want to visit an Ice-skating rink such as the one also located in Rockefeller center at 600 fifth avenue. Add some tasty food and a sweet treat to cap off your evening by dashing over to Serendipity 3 to cap off your evening located at 225 E 60th St. New York, NY. It is there that you can enjoy such signature desserts as their signature Frrrozen Hot Chocolate & the S’mores Frrrozen Hot Chocolate amongst a host of other great menu items. For a great & affordable hotel accommodation, I suggest the Hard Rock Hotel New York which is rated as five stars with rooms starting at $350 a night on the website which I think is reasonable considering some other high-end options this city offers.

FEMI MAGAZINE | 47

Another great winter paradise option would be Denver, Colorado. Many websites boast this city as a world class destination for things to do involving snow and ice. It offers seasonably appropriate activities such as Snowboarding, and of course Skiing, Ice Skating and Hot Springs. You are also sure to have an amazing adventure in the Rocky Mountains, located in Colorado Springs, CO. It is one of many Great Wolf Lodge resorts. This popular franchise also has several locations all over the country including Atlanta/ LaGrange, GA., Charlotte/ Concord NC., & Dallas, Texas to name a few. Some of the popular attractions listed on the website are the Indoor Water Park, Ten Paw Alley Bowling, Howl in one Mini Golf & the Howlers Peak Ropes Course which is billed as an invigorating aerial adventure that will have you balancing on ropes, crossing bridges, & climbing through obstacles all from the safety of a climbing harness. There is a save 30% off promo right now deal with twonight stays from dates 10-15-22 / 1-13-23 ($314.99 average nightly.)

Growing up predominantly as a Florida boy, I did not feel this list would be complete without including the happiest place on earth which is Disney World of course. I have had the pleasure of going to Mickey Mouse's house a few times in my lifetime, and once during Christmas, but not as much as I would have liked to. I had a blast being a part of the Christmas Candlelight Parade when I was 17 years old and seeing the fireworks/ light display. This year marks the magical place's 50th anniversary, so what better time to celebrate than this holiday season. Tickets will soon be available for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party on select nights from $149 for each person ten & up & $139 for anyone age 3-9. An obvious hotel option if it is within your budget is a Disney resort. A money saving tip for this trip is that Disney plus subscribers save 20% on rooms. Some of the newest attractions include Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind roller coaster at Epcot debuts, and there is also now a Star Wars Themed hotel officially known as Star Wars: Galactic Star Cruiser.

Pigeon Forge Tennessee is also the home of another great family theme park Dollywood, which of course was created by Country Music Legend & Entrepreneur Dolly Parton. I have never personally been, but it came highly recommended by a close friend of mine. She said that she absolutely loves Tennessee & this is one of her favorite Theme Parks. For easy hotel accommodations I again recommend staying directly on the premises at either the Dollywood Dreammore Resort (rooms begin at $342) or one of the cabins such as Bear Cove Cabins (the preferred cabin company of Dollywood Parks & Resorts) among amenities are the Theme Park, Water Park, & Dinner Shows to name a few. The website also says there is a Christmas memories cabin package for Travel Dates: Nov 5, 2022 - Jan 1, 2023. Get a two-day Theme Park ticket pass for $109 which is only $20 more than a 1-day pass. Park hours from 10am-9pm.

Lastly, but certainly not least on my list of incredible family vacations, is the most tropical & warmest locale of them all. I am supposed to be taking a mission’s trip to Brazil next year with my church, so I was inspired to include it as a fun in the sun escape from the frosty temperatures here for those who may be looking for a sharp departure from some of the previously mentioned places on this list. Ambergris Caye, Belize Brazil has white sandy beaches & it is the largest island in Belize. With direct flights from several U.S. cities including Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, & Miami. Some hotels with great ratings include the MataChica Resort & Spa starting at $210 a night with 4.7 stars review. Also try, Cocoa Beach Resort 4.6 stars $223 a night & Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club 4.3 $133 a night. Hotels listed are billed as allinclusive.

Image Credit: Areed145 at English Wikiped

Popular Tourist Activities include, Snorkel the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, which is a portion of the Belize Barrier Reef known for “excellent snorkeling & diving,” Chartering A Private Catamaran, & Diving the Great Blue Hole also located in the Belize Barrier Reef this is one of the largest underwater sinkholes in the world and one of the very popular dive sites. I do not know about you all, but in just merely researching these family & fun filled Theme Parks, Lodges, Home of Broadway New York, NY, & the Island Oasis, my bags are already packed & I am on the phone with my nearest travel agent! As the saying goes YOLO (You Only Live Once) so please make your best attempt at living it to the fullest & exploring as much as you can. I am certainly planning to take my own advice & do the same. I had so much fun simply writing this. Imagine how much fun it will be creating memories in these hot spots & many more after all Tis the Season to be Jolly, so let us hit the road & be Thankful for our Good Health, Families, & Loved Ones!
