The night sky in Spring This Spring isn't the time of year that you will find many of the more familiar things to observe in the night sky. The planets, Jupiter Saturn and Mars don't rise until the early hours of the morning, so most people will miss them. In April even the Moon is hiding itself away. However it is a great time to see some of the lesser known beauties of the night sky, especially for anyone with a pair of binoculars or a small telescope. I'll start with one of the best known constellations, The Plough, also known as the dipper, and Ursa Major. For anyone new to this, you'll find it in the north, looking like a string of stars leading to a squarish shape of 4 stars. Our target to look at is the third star in the handle (from the bowl). This is actually a double star, a brighter one .... Mizar and a dimmer one ... Alcor. One old name was the horse and rider. People with very good eyesight can make them out with the naked eye. Have another look at Mizar with your binoculars and you will see that this is a double as well. This double, double star group is a lovely way to get to know some of the more unusual sights in the sky. Our next target is an open cluster. A what? A massive grouping of stars, concentrated in one area. We are looking for M35 in the constellation Gemini. To find Gemini look in the west around 10 at night, about halfway up from the horizon you'll see 2 brightish stars, Castor and Pollux. To find M35, imagine the stars as two heads, looking at the one on our right, Castor, look down to where his foot might be, and you will see a ghostly patch of stars. With binoculars, or about 50x magnification in a telescope you'll see a marvellous cluster of stars and it's really big, about the area taken up by a full moon. Out last target this month is a true wonder of astronomy, the globular star cluster M13 in Hercules. Why is it a wonder? Well, our universe is about 14.5 billion years old, and this cluster is nearly as old at 14 billion years. The gravity that pulls the stars together, and the radiation pressure that pushes them apart has been in balance all that time. It ought to be next to impossible yet there it is in our sky. You'll need your binoculars or telescope again, find Hercules in the north east after midnight, and M13 is right at the top. A simple star chart or internet download will help a lot. Keep your eyes open, in 1974 a special radio signal was directed there, a sort of “Hi guys, we're humans.� message. I'm not expecting visitors, but you never know.

A few weeks back I attended the Expo Torrevieja at the International Auditorium. The Auditorium is a fantastic venue and hopefully we will see many more events being held in this spectacular building. There were many companies in attendance offering lots of advice and products for living here on the Costa Blanca and I'm sure the October Expo will be just as successful. Even though I have lived here for many years, it was the 1st time that I have attended the St Patrick's Day parade at Cabo Roig and it certainly won't be the last, however next year I will be leaving my car at home and joining in the celebrations on a much more social level! There was a fantastic atmosphere with thousands in attendance adorning hats, face paints and generally anything that represents Ireland. It was great to receive such positive comments about the QF Focus this last month, from both existing coverage areas and the new areas. I hope you continue to enjoy the magazine and pick it up on a regular monthly basis, which will now be the first Tuesday of every month. On a much sadder note, I was deeply upset to the hear the passing of Martyn from Restaurant Catorce. Our thoughts are with his family and friends, he will be greatly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. Congratulations to Lucy McNamara from La Marina who won last month's 50â‚Ź competition after spotting the logo on page 37. Spanish Insurance are helping keep Kotukala School Smile ..... with the official charity "Smiles for Kotukala School!" August 2017 saw the ladies at Spanish Insurance embark on the Christmas cheer for Kotukala School in The Gambia. After a heart melting trip over the Christmas holidays they decided that they could not leave it at the building of the toilet block and a Christmas party so this year they are going for bigger, better and more! August 2018 will see them return to The Gambia for the second trip and week of fixing and painting! Last year they were throwing themselves off a bridge .... this year they will be throwing themselves out of a plane at 4000 metres! The jump is set for mid May and there is still time to join in and tick something off your bucket list whilst raising money for a great cause. If you don't fancy the jump itself you can always sponsor by clicking on the Facebook fundraiser: Raising money for Kotukala School Gambia. Along with many other fund raising events, Spanish Insurance will also be asking parents and children here in Spain to hold on to any old English exercise books at the end of this term so they can take them with them. The Christmas trip was a trip into the unknown. This year they know exactly where they are going and exactly what they want to achieve to make a difference for the children and teachers at the school. Everyone is extra excited to be travelling this time with Construcciones David from Quesada, who have very generously offered to go along and help them repair the holes in the roof, paint the class rooms and get the school ready for the new year. Of course the trip will end with a treat for the children and a prize giving graduation ceremony and party. They couldn’t go all that way without doing something special for the children and teachers alike, and give them all an extra reason to smile! Pensions - how long can they realistically keep paying out? The reports say that Carillion's employees are protected by the Pension's Lifeboat - The Pension Protection Fund (PPF). Interestingly, as at March 2017 the PPF had £89.8 billion in assets and has a funding ratio, meaning assets versus liabilities of 121%. This means it can cover its debts and still have 21% spare .....for now. The point is that it is not a perennial pot and does not agree to cover 100% but UP TO 90% of any individual's pension retirement package. With the prospect of more pension funds running into deficit (for that read "trouble"), the Pension Protection Fund could easily be exhausted. In the last two months, I have come across two defined benefit pension schemes belonging to my clients that have been reduced in value - one by 21%. Our advice was taken to move it to a QROPS (Qualified Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme) as: 1) Despite whatever guarantees the pension scheme gave, there isn't enough in the pot to pay for its promises. 2) That scheme predicts it would be fully funded again and able to pay its promises by 2048. Both my client and I agreed it was unlikely he would be alive by then. I also have other pension transfers to QROPS pending but my most pressing problem is, I have a client who will be 75 years old in May. I need his pension transferred to a QROPS before his birthday or else his family will have to pay a “death tax” if they inherit his pension and take it as a lump sum at 45% tax. In this case that tax will amount to £42,000. So if you want to leave your pension entirely to your spouse and kids, as opposed to just half your pension to your wife if you die first, and nothing for your kids, then give me a call. Changes at Help Vega Baja … but exciting times ahead! At the HELP Vega Baja AGM earlier this year, it was announced that following a review, the decision had been taken by the Elective Committee to close the charity’s office in Torrevieja with effect from the 1 April 2018. The meeting was informed that despite the best efforts of everyone, including a complete restructure of the office in 2017, the number of people seeking help through the office had dropped dramatically, in contrast to other offices in the charity which had been extremely busy. Michele Masson who was re-elected as President for the charity at the AGM, said “We strongly believe that if we allowed this situation to continue we would be failing in our duty and that our time, efforts and of course finances can help people if directed in other ways. It is particularly sad that this decision has had to be taken because as many people will be aware, HELP Vega Baja originated in the town over 35 years ago. HELP Vega Baja is a forward-thinking charity and we understand that times are changing and that people now expect to receive advice at the touch of a button. We are working to ensure that our Facebook page and website are current and contain information sheets on popular topics. We are also improving the process of applying for membership online which we are working with our IT support to achieve. We also acknowledge that not everyone feels comfortable using the internet. For these people we aim to make ourselves available at various venues in the town as often as possible. Our Welfare Officer and myself undertake many talks to groups etc. throughout the Vega Baja area and we have asked our Torrevieja volunteers to join us for their expertise on many subjects. The committee was delighted to be able to report at the AGM that the charity had gone from strength to strength in the previous 12 months and that through the support received at fundraising events, charity shop, Campoamor market etc. we were able to donate in excess of 30,500€ to individuals and good causes in 2017. Our aim is to surpass this in 2018. Over 2,500 people received advice and information from our San Miguel Centre in the past year and there was a 44% increase in net profit. Like all charities, we know there will be challenges in the year ahead, however, we are confident that with the team we have on board we will face any challenges and continue to be a well-respected charity that the community can continue to depend upon. I have written to the town hall in Torrevieja and other organisations to reassure them that we are still very much committed to the town and we will always do what we can to support people and likeminded charities in the future. Have you lost or had your Passport stolen abroad? Here’s what to do. Having your passport stolen or losing it whilst on holiday, or even if you live here can be a nightmare, but it’s not as difficult to replace as you might think. The process can seem daunting at first but given direction you can have a replacement within 6 weeks. To start, you’ll need to report it stolen to your local police station in your area and get a document to declare it lost or stolen. After that you need to fill in your application form online. In Spain you have to apply online, you cannot use paper forms any more or apply in person. Before you apply you’re asked to supply your passport issue date, this is not essential to your application but will speed up the process considerably. All supporting documents that are not in English, like the police report for example, are requested to be translated fully into English before sending along with your application. The Card & Gift shop offer a translation service here in the shop for a small fee. All translations are official. The LS01 is also an essential supporting document to send alongside the online application, you can print these off online or have them supplied to you by us. All this seem like too much hassle? The Card & Gift Shop in Quesada offers a fully comprehensive renewal or replacement passport service for only 29€ per person, or 50€ per couple. The service includes: Full completion of the online forms and any other supporting documents needed, certified and approved passport photos taken and printed here in the shop and an insured and secured courier service to the U.K. We can also receive the new passport back at the shop for you and we will contact you as soon as it arrives free of charge. It’s best not to delay reporting it lost or stolen to the police and getting a replacement as in Spain it’s a legal requirement to have photo ID on you at all times. The total cost for a replacement passport is the same as a renewal, 102.86 Pounds Sterling. You pay £83.00 for the passport, and then Her Majesty’s Passport Office adds an additional £19.86 for the overseas return courier.

Hospitals Quirónsalud Murcia and Torrevieja apply hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) Implementing this complex technique which requires highly skilled centres, increases the survival of patients with ovarian and colon cancer. Having a personalised and multidisciplinary medical approach to cancer, and therapies such as hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) - also referred to as the Sugarbaker technique - increases the survival chances of patients with widely spread neoplasms in the abdominal cavity. According to Doctor Pedro Bretcha, president of the Spanish Surgical Oncology Society (SEOQ) and surgical oncology specialist at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, "The use of technology is important, but the primary requirement is to have a multidisciplinary vision of cancer, dealt with by a specialised team, because treatment should not be given exclusively by a surgeon, an oncologist, or a gynaecologist, but should be controlled in a consensual manner and adapted to each patient". This treatment is currently applied in Hospitals Quirónsalud Murcia and Quirónsalud Torrevieja, on patients who are diagnosed with peritoneal carcinomatosis, a pathology which consists in the spread of a primary tumour (digestive or gynaecological) in the abdominal cavity, and affects other organs within the abdomen. Doctor Pedro Cascales, coordinator of the Spanish Surgical Peritoneal Oncology Group (GECOP), and specialist at Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia claims, "Around 70% of patients, with ovarian cancer for example, are diagnosed in advanced stages, when the carcinomatosis is already present. It is these patients who, with the correct approach, can achieve unimaginable results that depend largely on the surgical team they are treated by".
In fact, using HIPEC can increase the chances of survival in patients with early stage epithelial ovarian cancer. What’s more, its use does not add any complications to the surgical procedure, according to a clinical study published last month in the prestigious scientific magazine The New England Journal of Medicine. The ‘Sugarbaker’ technique doubles the survival rate for colon cancer. This technique was developed by Doctor Paul H. Sugarbaker in 1982. It consists of the removal of the visible tumour, and later the infusion of HIPEC (at 43ºC) in the abdominal cavity to eradicate all invisible malignant cells, as the heat enhances the effects of chemotherapy. This technique has achieved survival rates that have not been registered in any other established treatment, with a colon cancer survival rate of 50% to 5 years. HIPEC treatment enables the combination of high doses of chemotherapy drugs which focus on the affected area, and less systemic toxicity due to the limitation in the spread of the drug from the peritoneal cavity to the blood stream thanks to the features of the drug’s own peritoneal membrane. Its use requires highly skilled centres with multidisciplinary and specialised teams in Surgical Oncology, as it is a very complex technique. The Surgical Oncology team at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja run by Doctor Farré and Doctor Bretcha, was one of the first, in 2001, to introduce this technique in Spain to treat peritoneal carcinomatosis. Age Concern celebratory Gala Ball “Live long and prosper” so the saying goes and that is what Age Concern Costa Blanca does, care and support the over 50s. Formed in March 1998 and registered as a charity from day one, Age Concern is a household name both in Spain and the UK and goes from strength to strength. From humble beginnings in a tiny house in Los Balcones, then onto an even smaller house in the Torretas, and onto our centre in La Siesta, which started life as a derelict warehouse offered by the Town Hall. After much fundraising our building was totally refurbished, decorated and fitted out and has become a social, administration and storage centre for all the mobility aids so often desperately needed for people who, either short or long term, want help. We have to thank former Presidents Angela Keay MBE, Judy Ferris MBE, Ralph Chambers and our current President, Maureen Payne for their tenacity and vision to overcome so many obstacles to make Age Concern, and their good work, available to so many. We actively encourage integration between British, Spanish and other nationalities. We work with several caring associations and charities to benefit the not so young, frail or infirm to enhance their well being, environment and enjoyment of life here in Spain. It goes without saying that the backbone of Age Concern rests safely in the arms of the 100 plus volunteers whether they be the drivers who daily transport beneficiaries to and from our centre, the volunteers in our two charity shops in Torrevieja and Los Montesinos, our friendly centre volunteer team who man the centre every week Monday to Friday from 10am – 1.30pm and a host of volunteers, never seen, but who work tirelessly in the background keeping everything ticking over.
Gala Ball - Saturday 19 May
Our 20 years of service, in Spain, to the community and over 50s culminates in a celebratory Gala Ball being held on Saturday 19 May at the Masa Hotel in Torrevieja. It promises to be a spectacular milestone event and tickets are now available, for just 25€ per person, from either our charity shops or our centre in La Siesta. A sumptuous 3 course meal, Cava reception and entertainment by the extremely popular Bella Luna means this will be an event not to be missed. What an eye-opener! By Sam Kelly, Managing Partner, Chorus Financial. It's been a month since Chorus Financial announced that, due to high demand, we are now offering our UK style financial planning and investment management services to those of you in the Costa Blanca South. My articles have been read on a weekly basis by 10,000s of British expats in Costa Blanca North over the last few years, and we have had a huge effect on how financial advice is given in those areas, forcing IFAs to put the needs of their clients first. I have to say that the last few weeks working from our associated office in Quesada have been a real eye-opener! Our offering was a simple one: I would review existing investments for free and without obligation. If I could find areas where Chorus's approach to honest, transparent investment advice would improve the member's position, I would demonstrate it clearly. The most common policies that I have seen have been investments with SEB, OMI and QROPS plans. So far 100% of the policies I have analysed have contained hidden fees. These aren't fees related to the bonds or the QROPS themselves, they are in the underlying funds, and often all the damage is done after you signed up to a long-term policy. The most common cases were when the clients thought they were paying around 2% in charges each year, but due to deeply hidden fees (and not on any of the paperwork) their annual charges were as high as 6-7%. How on Earth a portfolio should be expected to grow each year with charges this high is beyond me! The sad reality is, until the European regulators put a total ban on fund-based commissions, Brits living here in Spain will fall victim to these practices. We're not talking about a small number of advisors either – these practices are utilised by the vast majority of companies, both small and large, in Spain. Any kind of investment carries a degree of risk. I would never sit and promise my clients a particular annual return, or that the markets will never have a bad run. Successful portfolios will always have ups and downs along the way. What I will promise my clients is that they will be fully aware of the total cost of their investments each year. Even more importantly, I will promise that when it comes to choosing the underlying funds that make up my client's portfolios, they will be chosen 100% with my client's best interests in mind. I cannot begin to emphasise how important this is for your long-term financial well-being. Funds will be chosen from the open market, so never ‘in-house’ or ‘special’, they will be UK FCA regulated, unless specifically requested otherwise, they will have proven track records, from well-known and trusted fund-houses, and they will never contain hidden fees or pay commissions. All these elements are the best way to ensure successful medium to long-term investing. Book Review by Ivor Kindle
Book Title: Toys Author: James Patterson Publisher: Arrow I was in between reading a couple of fairly complicated books when I decided that I needed to read a somewhat lighter book ...just to break up the effort of concentrating on the detail. I chanced upon "Toys" and thought ...James Patterson ...easy read ...small chapters etc, it’s just what I need. What a shock this book turned out to be‌ James Patterson has attempted to write an Earth based type of science fiction story that has left me totally undecided as to its readability. The world is divided between Elites and Humans (skunks) ...the Elites are in charge and the Humans are despised and left to rot in a post apocalyptic hell. The Elites plan to wipe out all Human life in order to sanitise the planet ...that is until a Human with Elite powers decides that the Elites are going too far and uses his powers to aid the Humans. I really do not know what else to say about this book other than try it yourself ...if you like Patterson then you may enjoy this book, on the other hand.

A View From The Top
Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up.

More Money than Sense. Reading through the news I noticed a piece about Barbra Streisand and the fact that she had paid in excess of 38,000 pounds to have her now departed much loved dog cloned. This story struck me as being somewhat strange...Why I asked myself would someone clone a pet once it had died? I am aware of the obvious answer being...well she can afford to do it can she not ...therefore she has done it. On reflection however, just because you can afford to do it is not a rational reason for having it done. At a guess I would estimate that millions of cats and dogs are in need of a home and surely the animals that are currently alive are the ones that need our care and love. If you have read my column before you will know that I am an animal person ...my passion being Border Collies. Now, as a family we have seen a few Border Collie pets come and go ...yes we miss them ...yes we wish they could still be with us ...but yes we understand that animals, like people, are meant to
QF Focus Magazine die! The business of cloning ...for that is exactly what cloning is a business, has in recent years started to get out of control. We all remember Dolly the sheep do we not, however how many of you are aware that camels, cats, cattle, and a coyote have been cloned to say nothing of the cloned frog ...yes a frog named Damian and the cloned brown rat named Ralph. Humans thus far are banned from being cloned but for how long? Ethical questions arise from all forms of cloning including those of animal welfare. Is cloning natural with birth defects, illness and premature deaths continuing to be the norm within the closed world of animal cloning. The benefits to the world and to the human race of animal cloning are miles away from being answered. My view is that cloning is "just not natural" and after animals where next - humans. As a footnote I must say that I accept the need for some limited animal use in the medical sphere of science ... not Frankenstein science with mad experiments, but limited medicine development on a compassionate scale. Even having just written the last paragraph I am still in a tizz about the ambitions that human beings have in the field of cloning ...watch this space I will keep an eye on the cloning industry. Sunday Closing. The Valencian authorities in their infinite wisdom have seen fit to re-draw the Sunday trading rules in respect of Sunday store opening. As of now (late February 2018) Sunday opening will only be allowed on 40 days during the year. These 40 days also include Festivals and other days deemed to be local holidays. In essence the stores will shift the 40 days around to match consumer demand ...Easter and Christmas, along with high tourist times in the Summer months. For us in the South of Alicante province it means "Zenia Boulevard" will be off the Sunday shopping rota, as will Carrefour shops, along with other local well named stores. The markets will surely take up the slack in the need to satiate our desire to shop until we drop.
QF Focus Magazine In reality the Spanish (Valencian) year has about 60 holiday/ Sundays that fall into this closure category meaning the shopper will lose about 20 shopping days per year. On a personal note many years ago I fought against the relaxing of Sunday trading Laws in Britain. I was a trade union official and my concern was about people being required to work unsocial hours with a follow on detrimental affect on family life. Over the years I have come to accept Sunday opening although I still feel some of my original concerns over the treatment of employees ...hours ...terms and conditions etc need to be addressed. I suppose the thing to do is to wait and see if the new hours of opening will just become the new norm or will we find our desire to shop forcing us Southern Alicante locals to nip over the Murcian border so to speak and visit Dos Mares. The Brexit Shambles. I sat with a nice cup of tea and an air of trepidation to watch Prime Minister May make her latest speech on the mess that has become the talks (or lack of) in respect of Britain's exit from the European Union. The whole thing has become an exercise in say one thing and mean another ...a total lack of any forward planning and an apparent strategic plan that centres on something called "meaningful divergence". As I waited I thought this speech must, at this stage of affairs, have some concrete basis ...some depth in its forward thinking with a thought process that one must expect of a British government ...a government that elected to send the fateful letter that kicked started the Article 50 procedure. I watched with an acute sense of disbelief as a Prime Minister so out of her depth, failed once again to proffer any sense of Diplomatic skill. How can one so feeble and lacking in intellect become Prime Minister of Great Britain. Imagine starting her speech by saying "I want the country to come together over this issue." My tea almost ended in my lap ... a Prime Minister who has a Cabinet who on a day to day basis can be seen squabbling like "rats in a sack", and it's the people who have to come together. Let me offer you some advice Prime Minister...It's Called Leadership ...you either have it or you don't, and in your case you most certainly do not have it.

A new beginning for the Royal British Legion Concert Band Spain One of the Costa Blanca’s favourite bands has decided to change its name and reform as the Royal British Legion Concert Band Spain. The original band was formed in 1993 when seven musicians from various musical backgrounds came together and formed The Oompah band. With no other bands in the region they were in great demand so the Oompah Band formed two additional bands, The Vega Baja Big Band and the Phoenix Concert Band. Since those days, the band has played at hundreds of events around the Costa Blanca. It has also seen the arrival of their new Musical Director, David Last. David has vast experience of the music world, including service with the Queens Own Buffs and at the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall. He was also the principle at the Lyceum School of Music in Manchester, he had his own youth band and for a time he was also a woodwind player with the Territorial Army Band of the Royal Artillery. Following the arrival of the new MD, many of the band members felt that a new stimulus was needed for the band, so after consultation with senior members of the Royal British Legion, the decision was taken by the band to reform under their new name. However the transition is not quite complete as the MD is determined to provide the band with a completely new image as they join the long list of bands that are currently affiliated to the Military Charity. He is now in the process of having formal jackets tailored for every member of the new band, together, of course, with new banners for their music stands. It is hoped that the costs of the new clothing and equipment will be covered by sponsorship and donations from local businesses. Already, two pledges of 500€ each have been made by 'IBEX Insurance' and by the UK company 'Surface Protection'. More funds are still needed though to cover the remaining costs, so the RBL are now seeking any company or business that might like to help with those costs. Spring Cleaning, Crypto-Currencies, and Opening the Vault! The month of April is the start of Spring, the time to clean the house and gardens. It’s also the best month to spring clean your finances. Here are my ‘top tips’.

1. If you’re not fully retired, then ask yourself “do I have any frozen company or personal pensions left in the UK?”. If the answer is ‘yes’ then my first tip is to ask you to question just how safe they are and what options exist to maximise their value. 2. Check what savings interest rate you are getting and in particular is it above inflation (current 2-3%). And whilst you’re at it, is it more than 50,000€ and will it impact your legal requirement to report it in Spain (Modelo 720)? 3. Ask yourself if it might be wise to get a 2nd opinion on your investments so you are maximising growth and saving on Spanish tax. 4. With less than 1 year to go, ask yourself if Brexit is going to affect your finances and especially any inheritance issues. 5. Keep up to date with ‘what’s new’. So, what is new in the world of finances? On Saturday 12 May the 5km walk will start at Gogartys at La Zenia at 5.15am. The walk will break at 4km at La Zenia beach to watch the sun rise and for silent reflection by the participants. We were very proud to have been able to participate in the St Patrick's Day parade at Cabo Roig on 17 March where great interest was shown in the event with many people wanting to participate in the charity walk.

MoBo’s Enjoy Menu del Dia One of groups in the Sailing Association Mar Menor doesn't really sail - as they share the cost of running a 7 metre Spanish Artaban motorboat with an inboard Nissan marine diesel engine. It's insured and registered for six people and is moored in the Club de Regatas Mar Menor marina in Los Urrutias. When we're not on the water or working on the boat we get together for a chat, a beer and a menu del dia. The Club de Regatas Restaurant recently had a change of chef and management so we decided to put them to the test. It was all arranged with Monique, who speaks excellent English and Spanish, and was a very happy experience despite the dull weather. The food was good Spanish home cooking and the service friendly and attentive. We will be returning! On the Mar Menor we can use our boat all year and have the bonus of witnessing the Spanish Air Force Patrulla Aguila practise for their air shows, as well as seeing flocks of cormorants and flamingos. Nutty Chilli Chocolate Brownies Who doesn’t love a brownie or two? Chocolate, chillies and nuts are a great combination of textures and taste. Having run a coffee shop we discovered there are two camps on the brownie front; chewy and gooey or cakey and crumbly! Whichever type you favour these brownies are supposed to be slightly gooey inside, with a nutty bite. Once out of the oven they continue to cook - try to take them out just before you think they are ready! The key to great chocolate brownies is to use good quality dark chocolate, this gives a luscious smooth, deep rich flavour to the brownie. Ingredients 100g butter salted, cubed 200g dark chocolate, chopped 4 medium eggs 250g sugar 100g plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder 30g cocoa 1 level tbsp crushed/dried chillies 100g nuts, roasted and chopped (optional) Cocoa to dust (optional)
TIME: Prep; 25 minutes. Bake; 25-35 minutes.
Recipe Heat the oven to 180ºC/ fan 160ºC/ gas 4. Line a 22cm square cake tin with baking paper. Place butter and chocolate in a bowl and melt in a microwave. Set aside to cool. In another bowl; whisk the eggs and sugar together until the mixture becomes light and fluffy. Gently fold the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture and sift in the flour, baking powder and cocoa. At this stage add the nuts and chillies; mix well. Pour the batter into the tin and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is cracked but the middle just set. Lift out of the tin. My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases and I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask! I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED, OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. I always like to meet my clients and it is surprising how often, when you start talking about a person's work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. A RELATIVE HAS DIED FROM AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION BEFORE MAKING A CLAIM. It is not widely known that claims can be made even though the person affected has died (provided the claim is made within 3 years of death). The claim is made on behalf of the person's estate. DIAGNOSING AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION. There are a number of conditions that can be caused by exposure to asbestos, including lung cancer. The main issue is whether the breathing difficulties can be attributed to asbestos. This is the point we have to prove in all respiratory disease cases, not just asbestos related but also, for example, silicosis – medical evidence is required to prove a link. Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. Recipes by Pushpa from the Spice Hut CHICKEN SAAG Ingredients 4 tbsp of oil 200 gram of diced chicken 1 large onion, finely chopped 2 tspn of garlic paste 2 tspn of ginger paste 350 grams frozen spinach, chopped 1 tspn turmeric powder 1 tspn of garam masala 2 chillies, finely chopped Salt as required 1 tspn of coriander powder Fresh coriander Water as required One fresh tomato, chopped Method Heat the oil and fry the onions until golden brown, add the diced chicken, ginger, garlic and salt and cook until ready on a low heat. Add the spinach, turmeric, chilli, coriander powder, garam masala, tomatoes and water. Cook on a medium heat until nice and thick. Check the flavour and adjust seasoning to taste. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot with rice.

Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad. Life just needs little things to go wrong when, even as a fairly seasoned traveller, it suddenly feels like you’ve joined the cast of Hollywood comedy blockbuster Planes, Trains and Automobiles - rolling your eyes like Steve Martin and hoping John Candy has remembered a stash of miniatures from the hotel minibar. We have all had to come to accept cheap travel sometimes means being treated like sheep and at the mercy of companies who no longer think the customer is always right; actually sometimes leaving a traveller at the mercy of bullies who clearly don’t give a damn and can be quite rude in informing clients of the facts. Recent travel, including a cross-border trip, sadly in steerage, has woken this particular ovine to the fact not everything in life is a cruise; some things are just meant to ensure you do not have a nice day. It is a tale involving all three modes of transport that made the Martin-Candy story such fun and - for balance - a story that even prepared to hang out flags for Spain’s highspeed train service, the AVE. Catch a flight back to Manchester. Car hire is already on track and prepaid. The (Ford) Fiesta five-door requested has been upgraded to a year-old A Class Merc. Methinks a result – driven one before, although then a manual, this one is a keyless automatic with a stick change (ask the Americans). No problemo ...possibly. Dear readers, always think about excess insurance. Oh, and check the petrol. A week of happy, careful but not excess covered driving follows. Car great but arrive back to drop off the wheels and there’s a hitch – actually a tiny scratch under a rear door found by a Sherlock Holmes type. It was not me peeps, but, given that apparently everyone says that and the man looks pained and explains the damage was possibly a stone on the M56 road works, we have to move on. I like understanding; it makes the United Nations go round. Said scratch is £375 to fix and so we use a different card to the one holding the deposit. Mafia allows us to leave. Weeks later and there’s no refund on the £400 deposit on the other card. Go to Spanish bank. Bank advises go to Guardia Civil. Send a string of emails to car hire company. Deposit money leaves bank account – send more (strongly-worded) emails and finally get refund less handling charge. Ouch, no, double ouch! Things are further going downhill with a long wait on the tarmac back at Manchester Airport at an (early, early morning) hour when your correspondent is usually still dreaming. Worse still, the sky is full of sleet. However, the sun is shining in Alicante; possibly. Passport control in Alicante is officially undergoing an upgrade, apparently for those electronic passports designed to ease people through the borderline. There is a scrimmage of around 400 people – those with European identity cards and children pass through a physically manned gate. This is the low season and 30 minutes or even 40 minutes later there has been a slight reduction in people, who, sloth-like, are trying to use one of the hi-tech travel document machines in a very cramped hallway with low ceilings. There is no air, or airport managers; it gets hot and annoying as stag /hen parties fail in an attempt to entertain. Complaints have apparently been received and understood – border security is after all very important – and the six scanners will be joined by many more ...hopefully with ones that swiftly work ahead of the summer migration. However, and moving on in a positive way, discovering the AVE (the Alta Velocidad Española) can be a train service to simply dream about. It links up Spanish cities, it is comfortable, clean, and whisks everyone from A to B while charging up their phone, allowing passengers to work on a laptop (or even watch inflightish entertainment) with the thrill of a speedometer in the carriage (scary!). Slight glitch, given the slow release of tickets, it can be a little difficult to sometimes reserve a seat without an insider knowledge – but, hey, let the train take the strain.

Do we really know ourselves? Well if we don’t, who does? We are the only ones who control our thinking, our actions and the results we get .... no other human being is aware of what goes on in our minds, so we are in control as a result of that. Even attitude is important when we don’t want others to try to take control ....think about it. As children we can be guided, controlled and looked after. When we become adults we can choose the kind of person we want to be .... and we can be the best, believe me! When things go wrong, nine times out of ten people blame others. Think about this ....we are all where we are today because of choices we have made. Why allow things in your life that you do not like, or want to get involved in. If we are in a situation we cannot get out of, then ACCEPT that and change your attitude. People in prison who cannot get out can make a difference to their personality by changing the way they behave and liking themselves more. Believe me it works to see things and handle things differently. Our lives can be different as each new day starts, if we handle things in a way that won’t cause offence or bad feelings...we may be out of our comfort zone to handle things differently, but it is definitely worth it to see different results. Don’t allow others to offend you, and if they continue to do so, realise that we have certain people in our lives that maybe were a wrong choice in the first place ....take control and change things. Unless you do, you will not experience the fact that you like yourself and the person you have managed to become. Life can be amazing if we handle things well. Start each day with the hope of improving the way we handle things. Start off with appreciating a new day ....some people don’t have that any more! Until the next time!

SAMM racing season starts The first race day of the SAMM 2018 Spring Series was held on 18 March. The day dawned cloudy and colder than of late with 10 to 12 knot winds gusting to 15/16 on occasions and this probably affected the turnout which was disappointing at only 6 competitors crewing 3 boats, two Gambas, Shoestring Uno and Cuatro and the Balaton Sailfish 18 Mistral. In the first race, the Gambas, being faster, slowly pulled away from the Sailfish as they strongly contested the lead over the four laps. As very evenly matched boats and crews, the correct tactics on the upwind beat leg was the deciding factor on who was ahead throughout the race. Cuatro was ahead on lap 1 by 17 secs, but by lap 2 Uno was in front by 29 secs and increased this to a 2 minute 44 seconds lead at the finish. In the second 3 lap race these two boats again fought hard for the lead with Uno slightly ahead at the completion of laps 1 and 2. But they made the wrong tactical decision on the final upwind leg of lap 3 that allowed Cuatro to win the race by 1 minute 36 seconds. The race days this month are 8, 15, 22, 29 April. This is what happened when Anita van den Berg moved to Spain just over 3 years ago without a plan. In the Netherlands she was an Events Organiser, for many years the event producer at The Casino Company. “Organising luxury casino events on location was great to do,” she says, “we did so many beautiful projects for prestigious companies”. In addition, she also started her own model agency GoldModels which became an instant success. “When I worked together with other agencies there was always something that I was not satisfied with, I thought – I can do that better myself”, she stated. After all that she felt it was time to take things a bit slower and so she headed for Spain. Soon her old passion for music came back. As a teenager she was on stage and made her first single at the age of 14. She even walked from door to door to sell her own singles, that’s how it was at that time. “It was so much easier now to pick up my singing career again, my voice was much more matured and so perfect for the Jazz genre. I am now Lady Jazz, a busy singer on the Spanish Costa Blanca. Especially in the tourist season with many people on holiday it can be very busy. Hi All! Spring is here! It’s normally this time of year when the visitors start to arrive and many of the venues begin getting busier.
This very charming couple originally hail from Montevideo in Uraguay, South America. They came to live here on the South Costa Blanca in 2007, after having previously lived and worked in Barcelona, Madrid and Ibiza.
A few weeks ago I decided to visit my local Chinese Wok and treat myself to a well earned meal. On arrival I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was entertainment being provided that evening. That was when I had the opportunity to meet the musical duo, Gretel and Juan.
Gretel and Juan are an act that offer an extensive range of styles of music, covering many decades from many different types of artistes. They have a vast experience of performing, not only Cabaret shows, but also played strictly for dancing, covering Ballet, Contemporary, Tango, Ritmos, in reality, all genres of Latino music. Depending on the occasion, Gretel and Juan are able to provide any style of music for dancing. They even demonstrate the choreography that’s required for certain dance moves. This versatile couple can also offer Karaoke, if needed. From their arrival here back in 2007, Gretel and Juan have performed at many events and musical shows at the Masa Hotel International. They have held a residency at this hotel for 11 years now, performing every Friday and Saturday night, throughout the year. The evening that I heard them perform I was very impressed with their repertoire. Gretel sang the vast majority of the songs in English, with her very pleasant dulcet tones. Great numbers from the 1960s to present day, covering so many classic songs - too many to list here. Her rendition of The Carpenter’s songs, was more than impressive. Their balance of sound was perfect. I was able to converse, without shouting over the music. Apart from their performing schedule, this affable couple run the J.C. Entertainment Agency - promoting both themselves, and other artists. If you haven’t had the pleasure of hearing Gretel and Juan, as previously mentioned, they can be found at the Masa Hotel International, every Friday and Saturday night and Casa de Xu Restaurant, La Siesta, every Sunday evening.

The Stage Diary, now in its 11th year of publication, is not only an important guide to what’s on in all regions, but is also an online web introduction to potential expat’s researching community life in Spain. The diary also acts as a planning guide to assist groups avoid unnecessary clashes of production dates. Actors Community Theatre Company: Next production, ‘Calendar Girls’. There will be two readings of the play, 16 and 23 April, in Benijófar Cultural Centre from 6pm. Then they will be having open auditions on Monday 30 April, 6pm at the same venue. Quesada Bowls Club Report We are now at the final stages of our winter programme and it is pleasing to report that in the South Alicante league, the Diamonds and Rubies squads have achieved second place and promotion. In the Southern League the Swallows are on target to win the Division A with one match to go. The Swifts are also in a position to take a second place and a promotion position, but is dependent on the last game. Our new Swans team have done remarkably well and are in with a chance of promotion with a home game to finish the season. The Diamonds have already celebrated their promotion at restaurant La Pura Vida, where they enjoyed a sumptuous meal. (See team photo). Our club championships are still progressing and these will go on through the winter, with the finals still in progress. The Singles championship will be contested between Jacqui Johnston & Mel Highland in the Ladies and Colin Highland & Jason Prokopowycz in the Mens. Our Saturday morning ‘Chicken Drive’ is open to visitors. Players wishing to take part should report at 9.45am for a 10am start. Stevie Spit mattress appeal Stevie’s latest appeal, which he is running with Eileen Gleave, is hoping to raise enough to donate a single mattress to each of the children in the San Jose Obrero Children’s Orphanage and Elche Children’s Home, in total 100 of them. Stevie said “The two orphanages have some of the most vulnerable children that we care for - those who are abandoned, unwanted, and who have suffered rejection, so the very least we can do for them is to show them that we care.” If we (Stevie and Eileen) are to fund a new single mattress for every child, the project will cost somewhere in the region of 7,000€.” Stevie said “I appreciate that such a large amount will take us some time to realise but with 2,800€ already in the kitty we have got off to a very good start. This has allowed us to make an initial purchase of 24 mattresses which need to be provided in advance of the rest.” However, if you would like to help with the Mattress Appeal you can do so at any of his events where donation tins will be readily available. Cycling the Sierra Espuña The Sierra Espuña regional park is by far the area in Murcia of the most outstanding natural beauty and is the first protected natural area in the Murcia region. We travel here three to four times per year to cycle the great roads and tracks that it has to offer. The Sierra Espuña has been part of the Tour of Valencia and the Tour of Spain on a number of occasions and is a fantastic hill climb. We normally travel by vehicle with bikes loaded on the back and park outside a lovely little Spanish Tapas bar called Restaurant Ora on the outskirts of Alhama de Murcia. Here we have our customary coffee and tostada before unloading the bikes and setting off up this great monster of a climb. We start off at a leisurely pace with everyone talking for approximately 1km, however we soon start climbing, gradually at first but it soon gets steeper and steeper and the speaking fritters out. On the way up we pass many parking / BBQ areas and many trails suitable for walking and cycling, and there are families everywhere cycling, running, walking, BBQing and basically just enjoying this vast national park. We carry on regardless and after approximately 45 minutes we pass the central point with the restaurant and large parking area where we usually stop and regroup. Just past here we are still climbing and reach the start of the 26 switch backs which are fantastic as you can look down and see how far ahead you are from the rest of the group or you can look up to see how far everyone is in front of you - the average gradient here is 8% - 10%. Up and up we go until eventually it levels off to about 4% and we eventually arrive at the view point. At the view point there are usually loads of people stopping taking pictures including us, the views are incredible and you can see for miles. After a quick 5 minute stop we are off again still climbing, this time the grades reach 15%-18% for another 5kms up to the Military Observation Station which is a controlled zone and is fenced off. We cycle right up to the gate and take more pictures, this time you really feel on top of the world and sometimes we are even higher than the clouds. On the way back down we travel at a considerable pace usually passing the cars, as they try and negotiate the tight switchbacks, everyone normally works at their own pace and it usually only takes about 30mins to get right back down to the Restaurant Ora and the cars where we get a large table in the sun and order beer and tapas before heading back home. This is a brilliant but tough ride which you can add on many more miles if you want to by coming down a different route, or like some of the guys, come down and cycle the back roads home all the way to Quesada, passing through Mula, Pliego, Archena, Fortuna, La Murada, Orihuela and Hurchillo before hitting the home straight. Forthcoming Events By Keith Nicol Easter is done and dusted, the Cadbury creme eggs are all eaten and Spring is in the air. Last month thousands of people headed to Cabo Roig to enjoy the largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade on mainland Europe, and keeping the Irish theme going, the first Irish Pub Route, a sort of Irish Tapas route, or better still, a Pub and Grub Crawl takes place over the weekend of 14 and 15 April. The first ever Irish Pub Route in Spain features 31 participating Irish pubs in Orihuela Costa for this weekend event. The town hall is providing two coaches for this “Irish Pub Crawl”, so everybody can travel around the route safely. Between midday and midnight, a coach will pass each of these 31 pubs every 35 minutes. Each bar will offer a drink and a ‘tapa’ (finger food) for 2.50€. In addition they have many special offers and entertainment. Fun-loving participants will be able to vote by a special ‘app’ or at ballot boxes for ‘the best drink and tapa’, ‘the best pub atmosphere’ and ‘the best decorated pub’. Join the ‘crawl’ for the ‘Craic’. This could be the first of many. If you are seeking a little easy diversion in Torrevieja, why not participate in one of their free guided visits of their museums. These take place every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and are in both Spanish and English. There is a maximum group size of 15 and places must be reserved in advance at the Tourist Office on the Vista Alegre. Included in the tour are visits to the Museo del Mar y de la Sal, the Eras de la Sal, the Casino, and for a payment of 2€, an opportunity to visit Spain’s only decommissioned Submarine, which is open to the public, the S-61 Delfin and the Albatros, a former Customs Patrol Boat. Tours take place in the Winter on Wednesdays and Fridays 10am-12pm and Saturdays 10.30am-12.30pm. For the young and young at heart, the 8th Salon Of The Manga And Japanese Culture Of Alicante takes place at the IFA Fair Ground, beside the Airport, 7 and 8 April. The Manga and Japanese Culture Fair in Alicante is an event developed at the Alicante Trade Fair Institution that began in 2011. Since then, they have always strived to offer attendees a piece of Japan, giving special importance to their traditional culture but without forgetting Manga and Anime.

For fans of classic, American and exotic cars, don’t miss the Ace Cafe gathering outside La Torre Hotel in Los Montesinos. There is also a new gathering of classic cars taking place on the last Sunday of each month in Pilar de la Horadada, along with a small market on Sunday morning. During the winter the The Rojales Craft Market at the Cuevas del Rodeo is open on the 1st Sunday of each month in the morning from 11am to 2pm. It’s is a fun place to visit if you are looking for a small gift, piece of art or decoration. Local artists put their work on display along with other craft works to browse and enjoy. For a little bit of fun for all ages there is also the Torrellano Miniature Steam Train. It is run by the Friends of the Railways Association and so is normally only open on Saturdays between 4pm and 8pm with Miniature Train Rides from November to April on the 2nd Sunday of every month from 10.30am to 1.30pm and May to October the 2nd Saturday of every month between 4.30pm and 7.30pm. Their Train Museum is open every Saturday from 4pm to 8pm. Donations of 1.50€ are the norm to enjoy the experience.
