www.femalefocusonline.com This year is going to be a very different kind of year for me as we have sold the house and are moving into an apartment in town. I can't wait, but it will mean changes to our routine. Not having a garden will mean lots more 'walkies' with the dog. On this note I think I can safely say that a New Year's resolution of more exercise will be one I do not fail at for once!
Down-sizing has been interesting at times, as what I see as important, is not necessarily seen in the same way by the other half. Also apparently, buying a wooden table and chairs for the terrace, a large plant for the new terrace and stocking up on 10 large boxes of tea bags when they were on offer, may not have been the best idea as we now have to pay for them to be moved... I hope that 2024 is a good year for us all, and wish you and yours health, happiness, and prosperity. Until next time, take care and be kind.

WHERE THE MOON CAME FROM?
When I was young many people joked that the Moon was made of cheese. A really weird idea but it did make a great Wallace and Grommet cartoon. Ideas about how the Moon was formed have changed a lot over the years, but nowadays we’re pretty certain about its origin. Decades ago the two most popular ideas about the Moon’s origin were that it formed at the same time as the Earth from all the rocks surrounding the Sun in the early solar system, or that it was a minor planet captured by our gravity. These ideas were always a bit dodgy. If the Moon had formed at the same time as the Earth, it should have an iron core like the Earth... it hasn’t. If it was a captured planet, it should have different rock types to the Earth, it hasn’t. There are a lot more observations like this, suffice to say that we learnt a lot from the rocks brought home by the Apollo astronauts. Those same rocks, along with decades of research into the way the solar system has changed over billions of years, means we’re now pretty certain what happened.
The giant impact theory.
I like to call this cosmic snooker, with the planets as the balls. Around 4.5 billion years ago the solar system was a busy and chaotic place, stuff everywhere and nothing like the ordered and mostly empty place it is now. Earth was still molten rock and a horrible place to be. It was minding its own business when another planet about the size Mars collided in a glancing blow with Earth. We even have a name for this planet, Theia, and Theia had been around for a while, orbiting near the Earth until gravity pulled them together. The results vaporised the upper layers of Earth’s mantle, ejected large amounts of debris into Earth orbit and totally wrecked Theia. The next stage took millions of years, but gravity never gets tired and slowly but surely it pulled all the bits together, some returning to Earth but much forming into a separate body we now call the Moon. This glancing but destructive blow is why we still have our iron core but the Moon has none. A quick look at the Moon’s surface still shows the scars of all the remaining rocks that continued to pummel the surface, scars that have long been hidden and lost on Earth. Incidentally, all this is slightly connected with the reason the Moon’s other side is rather different from the one we see, but that’s a subject for another time. Sounds fanciful and fantastic doesn't it? Like a scenario from a Dr Who story, but it really happened, there is now so much evidence for this that you can feel quite safe in accepting it. Financial Advice from our family to yours Key Dates for Financial Calendar We trust you all had a lovely festive period and are looking forward to the New Year ahead. Let’s hope 2024 is full of nothing but happiness and prosperity. Given that we are at the very start of the year, we thought it was a timely opportunity to remind Spanish tax residents of their fiscal obligations throughout the year. Below are some key dates to look out for in the calendar. Remember, the Spanish tax year runs in line with the normal calendar year, from 1st January to 31st December. This could be different to other countries systems; for example, the UK’s, which runs from 6th April to the following 5th April. S Modelo 720 Declaration: This is a non-taxable, worldwide asset declaration that needs to be completed by the 31st March 2024. Spanish tax residents should declare all overseas assets (outside of Spain) which have a value of 50,000€ or more, assuming no previous declarations have been made. The value taken for each asset is calculated as per its value of 31st December the previous year and includes bank deposits, investments, and property. S “La Renta” Income Tax Return: This is the generic income tax return which most people will have experienced in the past. The income tax return has to be completed by the 30th June 2024 but is often done as early as May, allowing accountants to get ahead of the game. Spanish tax residents have an obligation to declare and pay tax on any worldwide income which is outside of any exemptions/ allowances. Each person has a personal allowance to offset against income, which rises depending on age and other factors. S Wealth Tax “Impuesto de Patrimonio”/ Solidarity Tax “Impuesto de solidaridad a las grandes fortunas”: These taxes apply to both residents and non-residents alike but only affect individuals with significant estates. Any tax liability starts after the personal allowance has been deducted; set at between 500.000€ and 700.000€ per person, depending on which autonomous region you live in within Spain. There are also additional allowances for main residences. The declaration for the Wealth tax has to be done at the same time as La Renta, i.e. by the 30th June 2024. It may be that some (or all) of the above declarations are not applicable to you given your circumstances but if you have even the slightest doubt, we would strongly recommend that you check your position. Magnum Concert Productions are starting 2024 with a fabulous tribute to two of the most iconic and best loved performers in our generation, Neil Diamond and The King of Rock and Roll - Elvis Presley. These tribute acts are simply superb and are not to be missed. We will also have a special guest appearance by a local Country Rock duo Lucia Bluez who are fabulous. The show will be held in the superb Teatre Auditorio in Beniarbeig, with a full sound and light system and stage production by Magnum Concert Productions. Jalon Valley Help Thank You Events
Jalon Valley Help concluded their ever popular Thank You: Carols in the Square event on Thursday 14 December, in the Church Square in Alcalali, with the Entertainers once more providing the songs and fun and JVH members distributing soft drinks and chocolates to the children and wine/beer and mince pies to the adults. There is always something magical about this venue, with the Christmas lights along the streets and the church lit up with dancing lights and The Entertainers providing wonderful songs and dances. This event was no exception with the estimated mixed nationality audience of more than 200 people soon enchanted from the very first song, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, they then had many of the audience joining in to Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and the Spanish songs Resistere and Feliz Navidad. Moving onto some of their popular more modern songs, it is surprising how many of us still remember the words to songs from the 60/70s, the audience were thoroughly enjoying the evening. However, the most memorable moment occurred at the Carols in the Square in Jalon on Tuesday, 12th December, where a full house had gathered in the square by the Polivalent and the beautiful Christmas tree. At this event there were noticeably more children, very wellbehaved children. It was obvious, after only a few songs, a group of young girls were attracted to the dancing moves of the Dollies. As the evening progressed the group got closer and their dance moves started to be more active. Then, towards the end of the show, they were invited to join the Dollies in their dancing. Gee moved to the front of the small group to lead them through the moves and fun was had by all, with everything videoed by proud parents to show to Grandmas and Aunties and, probably to be brought out again when the girls get older. It was wonderful to behold the joy on the children’s faces. The Entertainers had included a particularly poignant rendition of the Pogues’ Fairytale Of New York, as a commemoration to the life of Shane MacGowan, and The Prayer before closing another fun evening with a beautiful medley of Beatles songs, with everyone joining in and going home humming along to their favourite songs. Richard Green, Jalon Valley Help President, closed the evening in Alcalai by thanking everyone for the support they receive from the residents of the Jalon & Orba valleys, which enabled them to buy new equipment and to support anyone who is in need of medical support in the community. The audience were treated to a Nativity play, although there was not a child wearing a tea towel in sight! The cast spoke "in character" as Joseph, Mary, a Shepherd, a King and Angels, of their Holy experiences on the night that Jesus was born. White River Freemasons Lodge Nº 153 Donate to Amigos de la Calle
Last month, White River Lodge Nº 153, represented by Senior Warden, Bob Harris, presented a cheque for 1500€ to Javier González, the founder of the charity "Amigos de la Calle". Amigos de la Calle plays a pivotal role in addressing the pressing needs of over 800 homeless individuals in Valencia. As part of their expansion efforts, the organization aims to establish a cutting-edge industrial kitchen and create spaces for professionals to provide essential mental health services in their new headquarters. Additionally, their initiatives extend to supporting the rehousing of select families, facilitating their journey towards self-sufficiency which is very much in keeping with the ethos of the Provincial Grand Master in aiding those less privileged in our community. Javier González conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to the brethren of White River Lodge stating ¨this collaboration underscores a shared commitment to making a meaningful and positive impact on the lives of those facing adversity within our community¨. CHICAS CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS
Moraira Chicas Amigas held their Christmas celebration at The Olive Tree restaurant. Sparkly was the dress code, and the Chicas certainly did, the display was dazzling! From the first welcome glass of cava and the greeting of friends, the conversation flowed non-stop, only pausing for the distribution of Secret Santa gifts by Santa's Elves. Members of U3A Moraira Teulada enjoyed a fabulous night at their Christmas Dinner Dance, held at El Canor in Teulada on 8th December. The splendid decorations in the entrance and ballroom looked very festive. An excellent meal was served, and guests were entertained by the ever popular (and very energetic!) Bella Luna. The dancing continued until just before midnight. A raffle draw was held which raised 700€ for the Make a Smile children’s charity. U3A Moraira-Teulada Christmas General Meeting
Over 100 members came to U3A’s Moraira-Teulada Christmas meeting in the Salon GL, Teulada in December. Lots of members including Committee members looked very festive in Christmas jumpers and hats. Members were greeted with a free coffee and mince pies on arriving. Throughout the year, U3A members have been raising funds for its 2023 charity, the Alzheimer’s Day Care Centre in Teulada. Fund-raising activities include quizzes organised by David and Eileen Haxon, sales of items produced by the Knit and Natter group, together with donations from other sources. A big thank you to everyone. Sylvia Tatnell from the charity came to the Christmas meeting and was presented with the total raised which came to an impressive €4,234! Sylvia thanked the members for their generosity. Our members also showed their generosity by bringing gifts for the Make a Smile Christmas collection. Make A Smile looks after the wellbeing of 130 children in care who’ve had difficult times in their family homes. This charity has been chosen as our charity of the year in 2024. Members were then entertained by the Denia Rock choir who put on an excellent performance with a wide range of popular and Christmas songs, which was much appreciated. Following this, two lucky members won the raffle prizes. MOFTAG CLUB OF CALPE DONATES CHRISTMAS GIFTS TO RED CROSS
On Friday 15th December, Jenny Godfrey president of Moftag and committee member Anita Becker, presented Christmas items for the Red Cross parcels which went out to 125 families over Christmas. Moftag donated 3 items for each parcel including chocolates, turron, marzipan and chocolate Father Christmases. Hopefully this brought a little Christmas cheer to those families less fortunate than ourselves. This donation was possible due to the success of Moftag's Christmas Fayre in November where they raised 2374€ all of which goes to local charity organisations in Calpe. By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com If life feels a little bit flat after all the celebrations surrounding Christmas and New Years Day, don’t be downcast because there are a host of local fiestas jostling for a place in the diary. In Spain, Reconquest Day, celebrated on the 2nd January, commemorates the recapture of Spanish and Portuguese territories by Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand V from the Muslim Moors, who had occupied most of those territories since the 8th century. Known as ‘Reconquista,’ the celebrations mark a series of military campaigns, which took place between 718 and 1492. The five Spanish states reclaimed included Aragon, Castile, Catalonia, León and Navarre, while Portugal became an independent state from the 1140s. A decisive victory, which dealt a major blow to the Moors, occurred at Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, when a coalition of three Spanish kings won the battle. Following this initial victory, more territories were captured, including Cordoba, Valencia and Seville. The final victory of the Christian forces was the capture of the last stronghold of the Moors, Granada, by the forces of Ferdinand and Isabella I in 1492. Following this triumph, the Moors were forced to convert to Christianity but were later expelled from the Iberian Peninsula. Epiphany, celebrated on the 6th January, is said to be the day when the Three Kings or Wise Men arrived in Bethlehem to give their gifts to baby Jesus. This day is known as Kings' Day or the Día de Los Reyes, and is celebrated just like a second Christmas, with feasting, the giving of presents and a special crown shaped cake. These days, the Three Wise Men arrive in Xàbia by boat. Once on land, they begin their parade accompanied by their considerable pageantry, including the quintos (the festeros of the festivities of Fogueres). Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar are enthusiastically received by the children of the town, after which an impressive cavalcade then goes through the old town of Xàbia, accompanied by a band of local musicians. Around the middle of January, expect to celebrate the anniversary of San Antonio Abad. Born in Egypt in 251 AD, San Antonio gained a reputation for helping animals. His miracles included curing the blindness of baby piglets, frequently leading to depictions of him with pigs at his feet. Animals are said to have been instinctively drawn to Saint Anthony throughout his life. In modern day Valencia, owners bring their animals, from dogs and horses to more exotic creatures like ferrets, turtles and parrots, to be blessed by three priests bearing an olive branch, in the Saint’s honour. The festival kicks off with a fair, featuring a giant bonfire in honour of San Antonio. In Xàbia, San Antonio Abad is celebrated with the Burning of the Pine and the Blessing of the Animals on January 15th. (date to be confirmed). Local pet owners and animal lovers take part in this local tradition. In Xàbia, the festivities in honour of St. Sebastian, the Patron Saint of Xàbia, will be held just a few days later on 20th January. The origin of this festival is immersed in legend. Some people believe that centuries ago, he liberated Xàbia’s citizens from the scourge of the Black Plague epidemic. Others claim St. Sebastian is the Patron Saint of the Stonecutters and given the town's artisan tradition of stone masonry work, it seems logical that they would grant him this title. Saint Sebastian (died c. 288) was a martyr and Christian saint, who is said to have been killed during the Roman emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. Until several years ago, the festivities were limited to the celebration of a Mass and a string of fireworks or ‘tracas’. Today, celebrations include an events programne which features the running of the bulls, street parades, children’s performances and sports activities. Throughout the year, there are many more fiestas, local traditions and bank holiday to look out for so, although Christmas may be behind us, don’t think of putting away your dancing shoes just yet.

It's the start of a new year. So, let's go back to the start. To the basics. Why did I take up walking? It's a long and mixed-up story but, in short, its main benefit is to my emotional health. And that is why I continue to talk, sing, shout and write about walking. Let's break it down so we can fully understand why walking is the route to walk your way to emotional wellness. 1. Stress reduction: Walking helps to reduce stress levels and release tension from the body. It promotes the production of endorphins, which are natural mood-enhancers and help to relax the mind. It's the "happy exercise". 2. Mood enhancement: Regular walking can improve mood and decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety. It increases the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood, sleep, and appetite. Science backs up my banter! 3. Improved self-esteem: Engaging in regular physical activity like walking can boost self-esteem and confidence. Achieving small goals, such as increasing walking distance or stamina, can provide a sense of accomplishment and improve overall self-worth. Maybe 2024 can be a goal setting year for you? 4. Enhanced cognitive function: Walking positively affects cognitive function and can improve memory, attention, and overall brain health. It stimulates blood flow to the brain, which increases oxygen and nutrient supply, leading to better mental clarity and focus. And by golly do I need lots of this. 5. Increased creativity: Walking in nature can spark creativity and enhance problem-solving skills. It provides a break from daily routines, allows for reflection, and exposes individuals to new stimuli that can inspire fresh ideas. All my best ideas bounce into my brain on my walks. 6. Social connection: Walking can be a social activity, whether done alone or with others. It provides an opportunity to connect with friends, family, or meet new people. Social interactions can foster a sense of belonging and support, reducing feelings of loneliness and boosting overall emotional well-being. I love walking with my WYWW walking group. Join us! 7. Better sleep: Engaging in regular physical activity like walking can improve sleep quality. It helps regulate sleep patterns and reduces insomnia symptoms. Time really is moving on. I’m planning on keeping this article short as I felt I ranted a bit last month, although with good reason, but I don’t want the editor getting mad with me. It’s winter and it’s cold outside. If you have a natural lawn, I bet things are looking a bit sad right now. On Friday 15 December Calpe U3A held a coffee morning at the LAFMA premises underneath Ed. Santa Marta. 85 people attended and were entertained by the U3A Choir conducted by Mary Anderton. We enjoyed the Christmas favourites and of course we joined in as song sheets were provided, a Christmas mood was in the air. Mary noted that some in the audience were excellent singers and could be recruited! Our President Dorothy Warner thanked Mary and the Choir for the Christmas songs and thanked the members and friends for the great attendance, as well as the helpers who ensured the coffee morning was a success with JO behind the bar serving the mulled wine and mince pies. A collection was made for the Cancer organization M.A.B.S. The next meeting of Calpe U3A will take place at LAFMA on FRIDAY 19th of JANUARY 2024, 11am finish at 1pm. Calpe's U3A JUGS (Just Us Gals) group proved this saying once again, while dining at El Patio de la Fuente on December 14th for a festive holiday lunch. 32 women attended and were delighted by the decor, the food, the service, and of course the company. U3A MARINA BAIXA ´TWAS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY… and members of U3A Marina Baixa did just that. On 9 December the Strollers enjoyed a morning walk to the lighthouse in Albir, which dates back to 1863, including a visit to the museum situated in the lighthouse. The photographic display provides an interesting look back in time and the exhibition has recently been extended to include the small inner courtyard. The lighthouse was inhabited by two lighthouse keepers until the 1960s. After the walk of around 5 kms the members enjoyed a picnic of Christmas fayre. Thanks to Kaithe Green for organising this. On Monday 11 December the Picnic Group met in beautiful weather behind the Villa Gadea Hotel in Altea for another festive themed event. Garry Bell, President, and his wife Susan hosted the picnic and provided a quiz based on Christmas songs and Carols to accompany a variety of festive foods.
Film fans can enjoy an unforgettable night of classic soundtracks at the Valencia Congress Palace on Saturday 27 January. From 5pm, the Royal Film Concert Orchestra will pay tribute to the incredible composer Ennio Morricone. Widely considered one of the greatest film composers ever, he composed more than 400 scores for the cinema and television as well as more than 100 classical pieces. The programme at the Valencia Congress Palace includes the soundtrack to many film classics such as Ben Hur; Dr. Zhivago; Lawrence of Arabia; Titanic; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; and Star Wars: The Imperial March. From 8pm, the same venue hosts a tribute concert to Hans Zimmer and the best Action Cinema. The Royal Film Concert Orchestra will be performing the soundtracks of top films such as The Lion King; Gladiator; Pirates of the Caribbean; The Godfather; Sherlock Holmes; Ben Hur; and Ghostbusters. Wednesday 13 December saw 52 members enjoying a Wine and Dine Evening at the Albir Kaktus Hotel. Hazel and Tony Layt had organised the event and the free raffle provided a gift for everyone attending. A mammoth task buying and wrapping the prizes but members assisted in their efficient distribution. A lovely evening providing an opportunity for members to get together before Christmas with many of them enjoying dancing to conclude the event. Finally, on Thursday 14, the Craft Group held their last meeting of the year again celebrating with festive nibbles and looking forward to continuing with their craft skills in the New Year. If you are thinking about making new year resolutions which involve shedding those excess pounds, more exercise, getting to know the local area or just being more sociable, why not join the U3A Marina Baixa. There are a number of groups catering for a wide range of interests so if you would like to become a member why not go along to their AGM on Monday 22 January at 11am at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi. Lee Harker - on the move again! Walking 500km from Barcelona to Moraira for Akira’s dogs
Remember Lee Harker? Earlier this year he raised an amazing 10,000€ for Akira by walking 240km from Moraira to Valencia and back in six days. Now Lee has even bigger dreams. He hopes to raise 20,000€ by walking from Barcelona to Moraira - not far short of 500km and probably longer as, being a pedestrian, he will need to take quieter routes to keep safe. Lee is setting off from Barcelona on 29th January and plans to take 12 days on the walk, arriving in Moraira on Saturday 10th February. Walking 500km is no mean feat and Lee has been building up his endurance over the past few months. Akira will share Lee’s progress with daily updates via our social media and YouTube channels. Every Euro counts! Every euro donated gives Lee that extra determination and motivation he needs to complete this huge challenge. So far, supporters have donated over 6,700€ towards Lee’s target but there is a long way to go! ALL donations received go toward Akira and the dogs to improve their lives. We are now looking to complete the final part of our plans by fencing off a nature area and completing an agility area complete with equipment. The money donated will help buy equipment and toys which will be used to stimulate the mind and promote problem-solving. Problem-solving can help build confidence and the ability to make good choices. As this area of the brain expands, it helps reduce anxiety as the dog is more confident in their own decisions. Improving the mood of the dogs can make a huge difference in dogs who struggle with issues, allowing them to change how they feel and prepare them for home life.
